This list of movie apps will put thousands of free streaming movies at your fingertips. I've used all these apps myself, but there are a few I prefer over the rest (keep reading to see why). You'll be able to watch comedies, family films, action movies, documentaries, and tons of others. There really is something for everyone!

YouTube has an awesome collection of totally free movies. The company actually puts together its own list, so you don't have to go searching through random people's profiles to find full-length films that are legal to watch.

It's super easy to find the better free movies on YouTube by simply opening the Movies & TV page . All the regular genres are included, so you can browse films marked as action, horror, science fiction, drama, comedy, etc. There's also an Independent section.

As you'd expect, you can stream YouTube movies on all the best smartphones and devices, such as iOS and Android mobile devices, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku.

There are also some channels dedicated to no-cost films, like Maverick Movies and Timeless Classic Movies .

This app looks almost identical to Tubi's website , but it's optimized so well for mobile that it's super easy to use. All the same genres and the search tool are available through the app, and every movie cover is large enough to see without having to tap on them. There are tens of thousands of movies and shows to pick from here.

Choosing a movie will take you to its description page where it shows the release date, duration, genre, and similar titles you might like. "Like" or "dislike" a movie to teach the app what it should recommend to you in the future.

One reason I've ranked Tubi as one of the best apps for free movies is because of its awesome curated collections, such as Cult Classics , Only Free on Tubi, and Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes . An added bonus is that you can start watching immediately without needing a user account.

Tubi works from not only phones and tablets, but also streaming devices and smart TVs.

Prime Video (Freevee)

Properly separates movies from TV shows.

Every category list can be filtered for relevant browsing.

Includes trailers.

App-wide search includes free filter toggle.

Must have an Amazon account.

It might not seem like Amazon Prime Video belongs in this list, but there's actually an entire section of the app that lists only the movies and shows Amazon lets you watch absolutely free. This service is called Freevee .

Something I especially like is how these films are organized. There are the typical categories for helping you find popular and recently added movies, plus genre-specific lists for comedies, dramas, etc. But within each list, you can further refine the results by subtitle language and genre.

I've also seen useful collections like Movies of the month and Freevee Originals .

Like most movie apps, Freevee is also available in a web browser and as a TV app.

The links below are for the Prime Video app, but there's also a dedicated Freevee app . I prefer Prime Video because it has better sorting options, but the Freevee app is good if you don't want to see rent/buy options.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Clearly differentiates free from paid.

Adds new titles often.

Organize favorites in custom lists.

Parental control options.

Free movies are often removed.

Must log in.

This one is well known for movies you can buy, but if you're fine with the occasional ad, you can stream thousands of free movies at Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu), too, including their trailers.

Viewing only the free options is easy; just open the  Free  page from the menu or browse for films that have the  FREE WITH ADS   label. From there, you can look through all the films by the ones that are new this week, are the most popular, or are in specific genres.

Something else you can do is see all of Fandango at Home's free movies on their website and then search for a specific film on the app to watch it from your mobile device.

Other helpful ways I like to find something to stream is through curated lists like Top 200 , Hidden Gems, All-Time Movie Favorites, Captivating Dramas, LOL Comedies , Blast From the Past, Disaster Strikes , and Aliens and Outer Space.

I've watched Fandango at Home films through the Android, iPhone, and iPad apps, as well as through Roku and Chromecast. It also runs on Apple TV.

Saves progress so you can resume later.

Add titles to a watchlist.

Browse by actor, and other ways to locate movies.

Includes trailers and live TV.

Rentals are mixed in.

Doesn't separate movies from shows.

Plex is a unique app. It offers free movie and TV streaming like these other apps, but it can also connect to your computer to access your own media files from anywhere .

All the typical genres are included, including one for just description audio titles. Plex also puts movies into unique categories like Based on a True Story and Women Making History. I also like the Leaving Soon section which lets me catch movies before they start to cost elsewhere.

You can also get alerts when watchlisted items are available to stream, see similar movies to the one you're interested in, watch movies with friends remotely, scroll through titles coming soon, and view movies that are available in your other streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.).

This app feels a bit cluttered because of all the stuff you can do in it. But after even a few minutes, you'll quickly find your way around. The free movies are easy to find if that's all you're interested in.

Watch movies while they're playing live on TV.

Has on-demand movies that you can watch over and over.

Works on lots of devices.

Has non-movie channels; can be overwhelming if you only want movies.

Can't re-watch a film unless it's on demand.

Only a handful of movie channels.

I like to open Pluto TV for free movies when I don't know what to watch. Because it works like cable TV, with a guide and something always playing live, it relieves some of the decision anxiety that comes with these other apps.

There are two ways to watch stuff here. The cable TV-like service plays something all day long. There are even specific movie channels that just cycle through films 24/7.

For an idea of the kind of movies you can find here, some titles I've seen come across my guide include Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Little Monsters, Orange County , Equilibrium , 12 Angry Men , and Labor Day .

The other method is as an on-demand movie streaming service. The app makes a clear distinction, so it's easy to switch between the two. This is where you want to be if you want more freedom when choosing your next film. It's easy to see popular, trending, and newly added movies, plus films listed in particular genres.

There are several ways to stream Pluto TV. The mobile app runs on Android and iOS, and while this is how I stream from here sometimes, I much prefer the TV app because it fits a larger screen better.

Filmzie is built for independent filmmakers and small studios. It's my go-to when I'm looking for something totally new.

Your typical genre categories are available, like most apps, but I love the unique ways Filmzie organizes its films. Some examples include Directed by Women, Top Rated on IMDb, Cuddle-Up Comedies, and Undiscovered Gems.

The app is simple to use, it has a really smooth interface, and you don't even need to make a user account to start streaming. It runs on Android and iOS.

You can watch free on-demand movies available from Redbox through their mobile app. Just pick WATCH FREE from the menu to find all the ad-supported movies you can stream online.

One way I think this is one of the better free movie apps is how the titles are organized. It's easy to see which ones are leaving the free section soon, which movies just recently got added to the collection, and the popular free movies. They're also organized by genre.

The app runs on Android, iPhone, and iPad. You can also stream these free movies on your Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.

More free movies and shows can be streamed from the Filmrise app. They add new content every day in genres like horror, crime, action, drama, and documentaries. Some other categories include Animals, Biopics, Coming of Age, Animated Films, Cops & Robbers , and Action Comedies.

You don't need a user account to stream movies from this app, nor do you need to sign up to create your own watchlist to keep track of what you want to stream later. You'll see related videos on each movie page to help you find something else you might like.

Filmrise movies can be streamed from most devices, like Android and iOS, as well as Xbox and Roku.

Lots of movies.

All films have captions.

You don't have to log in.

Too simple of a search tool.

Can't sort by popularity.

Few unique categories to pick from.

Crackle supports just about every device imaginable, including all popular mobile devices, most smart TVs, streaming players, and gaming consoles, in addition to a regular web browser.

The interface is easy to work with, and the videos stream smoothly. You don't have to log in to watch movies and TV shows, but the option is there if you need it.

One thing you won't find in lots of movie apps is the option to sort and filter the results. Although I think there could be more done here to make it even better, it's nice that Crackle lets you filter by genre and sort by title and the date that the movies were added to the app.

This app works with several devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Popcornflix

Ads are usually fairly short.

Includes popular movies.

TV shows stay in a separate area than the movies.

Subtitle and language options.

Can't sort genre lists by popularity.

Popcornflix is another free movie app that lets you watch free movies away from your computer. I used to rank this one higher, but the UI changes made a few years ago makes it a little harder to use.

Unlike some apps, this one makes a clear distinction between TV series and movies. Once you land on the movies, pick a genre to narrow down the collection until you find what you want to watch. There are crime, sports, action, drama, horror, documentaries, thriller, and sci-fi movies, and interesting sections like Dark Forces Unleashed, Based on True Stories, Fight Night , and Mobster Movies.

Movie streaming from Popcornflix is supported on iPhone, iPad, Android, and other devices like Roku and Apple TV.

The Roku Channel

Recommends similar movies you might like.

Highlights movies leaving soon.

Also has live TV and on-demand TV shows.

Requires a user account.

Not as user-friendly as other apps (e.g., horizontally scrolling).

Doesn't isolate free films from ones that cost.

Can't sort within a category.

Movies are mixed in with TV shows.

The Roku Channel is another source I use for free movies. The app isn't all that interesting since it closely resembles Roku's website (which is pretty bland), but there are several genres to pick from, and it's easy to watch the movies on your phone or TV.

It's easy to find recent releases, featured and recommended films, and relevant categories at certain times of the year, like Holiday Comedies and Cozy Autumn Movies .

There's also a live TV area that has channels that play movies. Of course, your options are more limited than they are with the on-demand films, but it's a great place to visit if you're not sure what you're in the mood for.

This app mainly serves as a remote for the Roku, so it's particularly useful if you have a Roku. But you don't need one to watch movies here. It runs on iPhone and Android.

Not everything you see is free.

Sometimes incorrectly identifies films as free.

Yidio is more of a streaming guide than an app that lets you watch free movies. This means you can't watch anything directly from this app. Instead, it's useful for telling you exactly where you need to go to find free movies around the web.

To reiterate, this is more of a search engine for free movies. You can filter the list in numerous ways, such as by premiere date, MPAA rating, IMDb rating, and genre, and even hide the titles you've already seen. Once you land on something to watch, you'll be told where the movie is available for free online.

On that note, since the movies here aren't actually hosted on Yidio's website, you'll be told to install other apps like Crackle or Vudu. However, a beneficial feature is the ability to filter by installed app. This lets you find movies available in the apps you already have on your device.

Supported devices include iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Kanopy's free movies are only available if you have a library card at a supported library. Once you get logged in, you can stream tens of thousands of free movies directly from your device with zero ads.

Movies can be browsed by genre to find adventure movies, films about animals, quick flicks, and more. Every film has a rating, a full synopsis, and cast details. There are also related videos below every movie to help you find other films you might like.

Kanopy Kids is a special area of the app that you can access from the menu. Only kid-friendly movies are visible there, and you can set parental controls if you need to.

While this app is free and has the awesome benefit of zero ads, I rank it last in this free movie apps list because it's not available to just anyone like these other choices are.

The app works with iPhone, iPad, Android, and other devices.

On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

Let’s be honest, it’s a weird time out there in the world of streaming movies. As the major streamers continue to mess around with their apps and libraries, adding ad-tiers or changing their names to nonsense words that have nothing to do with the brand, they’re also charging more for less. As Netflix, Max, and Amazon Prime decrease in value, free streaming services become a better deal.

But just because you’re not shelling out any cash doesn’t mean that you want a terrible experience. If you know where to look, you can find hundreds of movies available online, completely for free. And no, I’m not referring to those sketchy sites you used to visit in college. I’m talking about services that let you watch full-length movies completely for free. Sure, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get the movies, but that’s a small price to pay for a world of entertainment brought directly to your computer, tv, or phone. 

So here are the ten best free movie apps, whether you’re watching on iOS, Android, or your desktop.

One of the oldest free streaming services on the internet, Crackle was launched as Grouper in 2004, a year before even YouTube hit cyberspace. Even after Crackle’s association with Sony has ended, the service still boasts a robust library from a wide range of genres. On Crackle, you can watch the Tobe Hooper animal attack movie Crocodile and the slasher classic Black Christmas , Boon Joon-Ho’s excellent crime drama Mother , and the inexplicable Sam Raimi /Coen Brothers collaboration Crimewave . Fans of tv will find equally varied fare, ranging from cult classics like Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and NewsRadio to originals such as Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story and wrestling show Heroes Of Lucha Libre . And all that it costs you is time to watch a few ads.

Libraries! They aren’t just for nerds anymore! Actually, public libraries have long been one of the bastions of making cinema available to everyone, regardless of income. And with streaming moving into the mainstream, libraries have followed suit, thanks to programs such as Kanopy. With just a library card from either your local public library or your university, you can get access to some of the finest cinema of all time, including Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love , as well as modern classics Moonlight and The Florida Project . Yes, Peacock is the Office streamer of the NBC network, designed to charge users $20 a year to rewatch The Office . But the service also includes a surprisingly full movie library from Universal Pictures, available for free with ads. As you’d expect, this library includes some of Universal’s greatest entries, including Jurassic Park and Casino . But Peacock also includes new movies, available only on Peacock. Mere months after its theatrical release, the Nic Cage Dracula comedy Renfield has been added to the service, as is M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin , and the animated hit Puss-in-Boots: The Last Wish . The one catch? Even free users must sign up for an account to access the movies. But that’s not nearly as difficult as navigating the modern cineplex.

Pluto TV bills itself as a throwback to the heyday of cable television, when we would press the “channel up” button for hours, jumping in and out of shows and movies already in progress. The service features over 100 channels, devoted to particular genres or even tv shows. If you want an impromptu marathon of random movies from the 2000s? Tune into 00s Replay and relive flicks like Uptown Girls and Imagine That . But the service doesn’t cheat you out of great on-demand offerings, including Titanic and the Indiana Jones franchise (take that, Disney!). But the best thing on Pluto TV? The Mystery Science Theatre 3000 channel, to turn your home into a Satellite of Love.

Look, there’s no way to get around this. Free movie streaming services need to have cheap content to license, which means that those looking for blockbuster studio movies will likely be disappointed. But if you love low-budget, b-movie trash, then you’ll be happy as a pig in the mud on services such as Popcornflix. The service has a huge library, mostly consisting of wonderfully weird genre fare, including the mind-bending Scott Adkins vehicle Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning , killer unicorn horror movie CarousHell , and so many Steven Seagal flicks. Sure, you’ll sometimes get a classier entry, like Leigh Janiak’s thoughtful horror movie Honeymoon , but Popcornflix is really the place to get all the goofy genre goodness you could want.

“Meet your TV concierge” declares Plex’s homepage. Sure, sites love making grandiose claims like that, but with Plex, they might be right. Plex started as a way to stream media saved on your computer, and while that’s still a big part of the service, it’s expanded into a quality free movie service. Unlike most of the free services, Plex makes its Hollywood movies easy to find, giving you direct access to Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct , Kathryn Bigelow’s war drama The Hurt Locker , and Bill Murray’s spy comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little . Plex doesn’t scrimp on the foreign and indie movies either, with access to the excellent A24 drama The Farewell and great Korean horror movie The Wailing . All this comes commercial-free, making Plex one of the best options on this list.

If you want to watch the absurd biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story , you can only go to one place: the Roku Channel. Yes, you read that right — Roku isn’t just a device you plug into your tv to access streaming services. It’s a quality service in its own right. At first glance, the Roku Channel emphasizes tv shows, offering full series of the original Quantum Leap and Babylon 5 . But if you look a little closer, you’ll find a robust library of free to watch movies, including the aforementioned Weird Al biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe. Offerings include 1979’s The Amityville Horror , the 2007 teen comedy Superbad , and Spike Lee’s classic Do the Right Thing . The Roku Channel takes a bit more dexterity to navigate, but it’s definitely worth it to watch these great movies for free.

Most of us know Vudu as one of the primary video-on-demand services, the site to rent or purchase new movies such as Fast X or The Super Mario Bros. Movie . The name says it all. Movies Found Online doesn’t host its content, but instead, the website embeds free movies and videos from other sites into one location. Nearly everything on this website is independently made, and the selection includes narrative features, documentaries, and even short films. The website has a somewhat limited library compared to other sites on this list, but if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you might find something on Movies Found Online.

Popcornflix is a straightforward video streaming service to watch free movies online. It hosts tons of films, TV shows, and documentaries. The service has been around for nearly a decade now, but the library seems to have made a recent move towards B-movies. The best streaming services have more than proved their usefulness in entertaining everybody at home. But signing up for all of them is just not financially feasible for most people. That’s where the best free streaming services come in. They can provide hours of free TV and movies at no cost. You will have to watch ads, but that’s no different than what you get through an expensive cable package. Again: They’re free!

And since they cost $0, you can sign up for all of the best free streaming services on our list. We've ranked them anyway, since nobody has an endless amount of time.

Amazon Freevee , a rebrand of the service formerly known as IMDb TV, features an impressive library of free on-demand content. The TV selection consists of the typical free shows like Hell's Kitchen but also past hits like Lost, Desperate Housewives and Mad Men. Plus, Freevee also makes originals, like the revivals Bosch: Legacy and Leverage: Redemption and courtroom reality sensation Jury Duty.

The movie lineup is better than competitors, with recent titles including Deadpool, The King of Staten Island, Spy, Emma and The Invisible Man.

2. Roku Channel

The Roku Channel app comes automatically with any Roku TV or device, but it’s also available for download on mobile phones and tablets. You can also access it on the web. The Roku Channel doesn’t force you to register for an account (you can watch as a guest) but signing up allows you to continue watching content on another device.

Like the other services, it offers on-demand movies and TV shows. The Roku Channel also rolled out a Roku Live TV Guide , so viewers can channel surf. The best part of Roku Channel is that it often streams the first episodes of premium cable shows, like Game of Thrones, Billions, Outlander and Watchmen. But when it comes to having whole shows, you don't have series of that caliber, but stuff like This Old House instead. Some of our staff lit up at that news, while others, well, we kept clicking around in Roku looking for something else. And remembering that Peacock is better for more-recent content.

The Roku Channel has risen in our free streaming service rankings after adding all the originals from the now-defunct Quibi. That includes some really good series, like Free Rayshawn and Reno 911. Roku is also the place for original movies like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Plus, they get our thanks for saving the NBC-canceled series Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist with a Christmas special.

3. Pluto TV

The Viacom-owned Pluto TV has a decent selection of on-demand movies and shows but where it really shines is in live TV streaming. Viewers can browse live channels in a grid, similar to the cable TV guide experience. The lineup draws heavily from Viacom’s other properties, so you can tune into TV Land Drama, BET Her, MTV's Jersey Shore and VH1's I Love Reality. They also offer other recognizable brands, like CNN and Fox Sports — though those run curated clips, not the actual live broadcast you’d see if you watched them on cable.

We're still waiting for Pluto to add dedicated channels for shows that we really care about — recent editions include Baywatch, Stargate and Degrassi — but we do know people who love those shows, and keep going back to Pluto to binge-watch. For more modern content, check our Peacock.

As we poked around Pluto, we noted its interface is clean and simple, making it easy to toggle between live and on-demand. Both are organized into categories, making it easy to find the kind of content you want to watch. Yes, there are ads, but no more than what you’d get watching cable. And Pluto TV doesn’t even require registration, though users can special features if they do sign up for an account, such as the ability to designate favorite channels and resume watching a program on a different device. As for the latest, a recent update to Pluto TV added a ton of free TV , including two huge channels: Rocky and Sailor Moon.

Think of Tubi as a free version of Netflix, with an on-demand library of over 20,000 movies and TV shows. Of course, Tubi doesn’t have the newer, high-profile titles that a subscription platform boasts, nor originals. But their catalog is still impressive for a free streaming service. 

Tubi (now owned by Fox Corporation) was able to build it by partnering with over 250 providers, including Hollywood heavyweights Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM. Recent available titles include The Terminator, Foxcatcher, Kill Bill, The Craft and Fruitvale Station. Personally, our streaming media editor Henry T. Casey loves Tubi for one show and one show only: Lucha Underground, a stylized wrestling show on El Vez. Recently, Tubi added the former HBO series The Nevers.

Tubi has a clean, streamlined experience. When we tested Tubi, we saw that its home page is organized into sections like Recently Added, Family Movies, Action and Black Cinema. Clicking the menu for even more genres and curated collections, we saw the clever and cheeky Not on Netflix area. While you don’t have to sign up to use Tubi, registering for an account gives you access to parental controls, a queue and viewing history.

Crackle is a pioneer in the free streaming space, launching in 2004 — back when Netflix was still shipping DVDs. Owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Crackle houses free movies and TV shows and even original programming, which sets it apart from many of the other free streaming services on this list. Crackle doesn’t require registration, though an account lets you add favorites and save progress while watching a movie.

The movies library is much bigger than the TV one and much more interesting. Crackle is one of the best free streaming services because it goes further than most, with originals featuring top actors including Martin Freeman, Bryan Cranston and Rupert Grint. It's just that these are their lesser-known titles, and while we're open to discover new projects, we're also wary that there may be a bad reason why we don't known about these shows.

Unlike Peacock, Crackle doesn't require signing up for a service to watch content. You can just open their page, click on a show or movie, watch and ad and then see the thing you want.

6. Sling Freestream

Sling is one of the best cable TV alternatives in the market at $40 per month for 50-plus channels. Recently, they relaunched a no-cost service with the name Freestream that boasts live and on-demand content. We love Sling, as multiple TG staffers have used it to cut the cord, and a free version may be the ticket to getting more users to try the platform. 

Sling Freestream launched with 210 channels and 41,000 on-demand titles across genres including news, sports, game shows, crime dramas, nature, home improvement and cooking. Some of the channels are familiar names like ABC News Live, ESPN On Demand, Family Feud, Forensic Files, Hell's Kitchen, Rick Steves Europe, VH1 I Love Reality and The Walking Dead Universe. Plus, users can add on premium streaming services like AMC Plus and Showtime. 

Expect more channels and on-demand titles as Sling Freestream continues to build out its offering.

The Walmart-owned Vudu is a digital marketplace where you can purchase the latest movies and TV shows but also stream free content. To use Vudu, you will have to sign up for an account (or use your Walmart account). Once you do that, you can access over 10,000 free movies and TV episodes. None of them are new blockbusters but the selection is superior among free streaming services. The movies area is better than TV, with recent titles including Troy, The Prestige, All Is Lost, Hoosiers, Four Weddings and a Funeral. And unlike other free services, Vudu is planning to produce original shows, like the sci-fi series Albedo with Evangeline Lilly.

Testing Vudu out, we found that its interface is easy to use. Free content is clearly marked and you can filter for just free titles. The ads are about as frequent as other free services, but they tend to be more repetitive (and sometimes annoyingly interactive, requiring you to choose an option). Poking around Vudu's free section, though, we couldn't help but notice multiple titles that seemed a bit risque for the top of the stack — titles that we'd have a hard time explaining to kids. That's not a problem on most of the above services, as Peacock, Pluto, Roku Channel and other services don't promote that content as highly.

Xumo is another free streaming service with live and on-demand content. The app comes on several major smart TV brands and can also be downloaded on Roku , iOS and Android. No registration is required. Xumo offers more than 190 channels, including top brands like NBC News, Fox Sports, Funny or Die and TMZ.

Xumo’s main experience is a grid-type guide, just like you’d get with cable TV — and Pluto and Peacock. You can watch live as you channel surf. The on-demand area lists all the channels, broken down by genre. The interface doesn’t make it that easy to see what TV shows are available, though. It looks like Xumo has the usual free fare: 21 Jump Street, Forensic Files, Family Feud and Unsolved Mysteries. The mobile app at least has a movies tab that you can browse.

NBC's Peacock TV is a behemoth, with over 13,000 hours of content available in its Peacock Free tier. That content is top-notch, too. You'll find titles like The Office, 30 Rock, Battlestar Galactica, Cheers, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood and Parks and Recreation. And there are a lots of older movies to watch, from Harry Potter to Jurassic Park.

When we used Peacock, to see what it's like, we found that the free tier is definitely a sort of gateway drug. It's nice that the first episodes of big-name original shows such as Girls5Eva are available for free, but we get that NBCUniversal doesn't want to give whole shows away — that's what the $4.99 Peacock plan is for (although it might come in a little less with the right Peacock TV promo code ). Peacock Free didn't require us to to enter our credit card info, but you must create an account to watch — something that Pluto, Xumo and others don't enforce. 

There are also "live" channels, based on brands like Saturday Night Live and the Today Show. If you don't know what to watch , channel surf and check out what's playing at the moment. How we test the best free streaming services

Shows and movies on free streaming services come and go with the frequency of Spinal Tap drummers, red-shirts on Star Trek and roses on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

So, first and foremost, we check these services frequently to make sure they're still providing some good content (specific shows and movies are subject to the whims and contracts we're not privy to).

On top of that, we also look at these services on the best streaming devices to make sure that everyone gets a quality experience. This is how we know that Freevee is more prominent on Fire TV hardware than elsewhere.

Lastly, we do the hard work and actually watch the shows and movies, to make sure these apps actually work well. We don't expect them all to function as well as paid services, but we love it when they have the same high-quality apps.

How to choose the best free streaming service for you 

Luckily, since they are all free, you don’t need to choose just one of the best free streaming services. However, you may find it difficult to balance a bunch of different apps and want to focus on just one or two. 

The first consideration should be whether you want to be able to watch live channels. If that’s the case, you may want to use Pluto TV, Sling Free, Xumo, Peacock or the Roku Channel. If you only care about finding movies and TV shows on-demand, then try Freevee, Peacock, Crackle, Tubi or Vudu. 

Content selection is the other major thing that distinguishes the free streaming services from each other. Aside from Peacock, with its library of name-brand content, almost all of them have the same core of free TV shows, like Hell’s Kitchen and Roseanne. But some, like Freevee and Crackle, have more robust movie libraries. Others provide access to top past shows, like Peacock and the Roku Channel. So, peruse the available titles and see if the streamer has options that appeal to you. After all, even if these services are free, doesn’t mean they have stuff you want to watch.

• Sid23 Buy a Roku. I just bought a Roku streaming stick 4K and am using it on my old Samsung (2013) non smart tv. As long as it has an HDMI port and is within distance of good WIFI signal you can get all those apps on the Roku. I got the streaming stick because it is supposed have long range WIFI reach. It is usually $49.99 and now is on sale online only for $29.99 (Walmart) I still have cable and am using the Rokus to get rid of cable boxes. Working my way slowly to cutting the cable. Reply

If you want to use a PC then Kodi is what you want to use. It's free although some "channels" require you to have a Real Debrib or Premiumize. The site also does a great job of sorting the movies into categories like Mythical Creatures, New Releases, and Thrilling Suspense, for easy browsing.

Crackle has been around a long time — it got its start in 2004. And unlike some other streaming channels, Crackle is 100% free, offering all its content at no cost (with ads), so anything you see on the site you can watch without paying. 

You can browse movies and TV shows by genre, alphabetically, or search for a specific title.

Popcornflix is another completely free video streaming site, offering about 2,000 movies with ads in a variety of categories. It's available as an app for a variety of devices, and you can also watch in a web browser. There's no account required; just open the website, select a movie and start viewing. 

Many of the entries at Popcornflix fall into the category of guilty pleasures (like "2-Headed Shark Attack") and cheap knock-offs of mainstream properties (like "Atlantic Rim" and "Almighty Thor") but there's something charming here about the movies you can binge for free with limited ads.

Pluto TV is a little different than most streaming video services. In addition to being able to watch movies and TV shows on demand, it also streams live programming that you access in a program guide as if you were watching cable or satellite TV. 

You can jump into programs in progress after browsing the dozens of categories arranged like channels, or switch to the On Demand tab, and start any of the thousands options that are, arranged into easily browsable categories. No catch here! It's all free, supported by ads.

Freevee is an ad-supported video streaming service owned by Amazon. You can stream Freevee content through a number of devices via the Amazon Freevee app, Prime Video app, or by using your web browser.

And if you try to connect from an EU country, you’ll get this message: “I’ll be back. – Terminator. Tubi is the largest free movie and TV streaming service in the US. We are not available in Europe due to changes in EU laws. The GDPR went into effect on May 2018; Tubi is working on compliance and planning to re-launch in European countries soon”.

There may be hope in the future that Tubi will bring its services overseas. For now, a VPN works well to bypass its existing content blocks.

Tubi is available through multiple apps for devices that work with a VPN, including Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV.

Although it primarily operates as a service for buying and renting digital TV shows and movies, Vudu also carries many free titles that are supported by advertisements.

The service is only available in the US, however. It doesn’t even both to provide an IP block message. If you try to access the site from outside of the US, you’ll just see an HTTP ERROR 400 page.

23. Watch4 and W4Free

Although most of the best free streaming sites for TV and movies are locked to the US, there still many options available elsewhere. We’ve found VPNs work to bypass Xumo’s geographic content blocking, but the service uses fairly effective anti-VPN countermeasures. You may need to contact your VPN provider’s customer support to determine which VPN servers effectively bypass its content blocking.

25. YouTube

Although it’s available almost everywhere, YouTube’s content is not universally available. Many content uploaders place geographic content restrictions when they upload the content. YouTube then employs its own software to enforce those restrictions by detecting each users’ IP address to determine location.

YouTube’s content licensing arm offers 270+ titles on-demand, alongside the millions from its userbase.

To download a movie or show you want to watch , you’ll need to be using the Disney+ app on an iOS or Android device. Once you’ve found the title you want to download, tap Download on the Details page to start the download. One thing we love about offline downloads for Disney+ is you can store an unlimited amount of downloaded content, on up to 10 different devices. Just be sure to log in once or twice per month, as downloads will automatically be removed from inactive Disney+ accounts after 30 days.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.
