Muslims throughout the world have extremely high standards of personal hygiene, because Islam places great emphasis on both physical and spiritual, cleanliness and purification.  While humankind in general usually considers cleanliness to be a pleasing attribute, Islam insists on it.  Muslims are required to take care of their personal hygiene by assuring that they are well groomed, and that their bodies, clothing, and surroundings are clean.  Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, informed his companions and thus all of us, about the importance of cleanliness when he said, “cleanliness is half of faith.” [1]  The Quran is more specific and says,

“Truly, God loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves.” (Quran 2:222)

Personal hygiene is desirable at all times but certain aspects of personal hygiene are not only important but also compulsory. According to scholars, cleanliness is of three kinds, purification, or ritual washing in order to perform prayer; keeping the body, clothing, and environment clean; and specifically removing the dirt or grime that collects in the various parts of the body, such as teeth, nostrils, under the nails, in the armpits and around the pubic area.

Ritual Washing

The Arabic word for purity is tahara and it means to be free from filth, both spiritual and physical.  Purity is the key to prayer. Spiritual taharah means being free from sin and idolatry and denotes believing in the Oneness of God.  It is as important as physical cleanliness.  Before a person stands before God in the special connection that is prayer, he must ensure that his heart is free from sin, arrogance, and hypocrisy.  Once this is accomplished, or at least greatly desired, he is able to cleanse himself from physical impurities.  This is usually achieved by using water.

“O you who believe!  When you intend to offer the prayer, wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and (wash) your feet up to the ankles.  If you are in a state of Janaba (i.e. had a sexual discharge) purify yourself.”  (Quran 5:6)

Prior to obligatory or voluntary prayer a person must assure that he is in a state of cleanliness, he does this by performing either wudu (often translated as ablution) or ghusl (a full bath).  Wudu rids the body of minor impurities, and ghusl cleanses the body of major impurities.  Ghusl must be performed after sexual intercourse or any sexual activity that releases bodily fluids.  Ghusl is also performed at the completion of a woman’s menstrual period or post partum bleeding.

Ritually cleansing the body by performing wudu includes washing the hands, rinsing the mouth and nose, washing the face, washing the arms up to the elbows, wiping the head (and beard), washing the ears, including behind the ears and washing the feet up to and including the ankle.  A person does not have to repeat this ablution for every prayer unless he has broken his wudu by one of the following methods; urinating or defecating, breaking wind, eating camel meat, falling asleep while lying down, losing consciousness, directly touching the genital area or becoming sexually excited sufficiently to emit a discharge.

In the traditions of Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, we are told that on the Day of Judgement those who complete a perfect wudu will be identifiable by the light shinning from the areas washed in wudu. [2]  Prophet Muhammad also taught the believers to perform wudu in an environmentally friendly manner.  Water was often scarce and he recommended using as little water as necessary to complete the wudu correctly.  However, on certain occasions it was obligatory to take a full bath (ghusl), at which time water touches all parts of the body.

Under certain conditions, ritual purification can be achieved without water.  This is called tayammum , or dry ablution.  If water is not available in sufficient quantities, or if it would be dangerous to use water, for instance if a person was wounded or very ill, clean earth may be used instead. Tayammum is performed by striking the hands lightly over clean earth and then passing the palm of each hand on the back of the other, the dust is then blown off and the hands are passed across the face.  These actions are performed instead of wudu or ghusl.

“...But if you are ill or on a journey or any of you comes from answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (i.e. sexual intercourse) and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands.  God does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour on you that you may be thankful.” (Quran 5:6)

Although God expects those who worship Him to be ritually clean, He is Merciful and allows certain concessions.  He (God) says in the Quran (2:286) that He does not burden a person beyond what he can bear.  Thus, tayammum is one of the concessions as is wiping over the socks, headscarves, and turbans.

Islam is a holistic religion that takes into account humankind’s need for a balance between physical, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being.  Personal hygiene and cleanliness, both physical and spiritual, keeps both the body and mind free from disease. Cleanliness is an important part of the high standards and values that are inherent in Islam.

Cleanliness is half of faith

Published on 1 September 2020

Please provide an explanation for the portion of the Hadith: “Taharah is half of faith”.

Perhaps you are referring to the Hadith Imam Muslim and others have recorded on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 224; Also see: Jami’ul ‘Ulumi wal Hikam, Hadith: 23)

‘Allamah Ibn Rajab Al-Hambali (rahimahullah) has mentioned that the correct opinion, which majority of the ‘Ulama have held, is that the word طهور (Tuhur), in this Hadith, refers to the usage of water to purify one’s self. This could also be referred to as wudu. Based on this, various explanations have been given as to the correlation between wudu and Iman.

One of the explanations that have been given is that “Iman” refers to the characteristics or qualities of Iman. Since every characteristic or quality of Iman ultimately leads to the purification of one’s body or soul, they can be divided into two groups; one resulting in outer purification (i.e purification of one’s body, appearance, etiquette, etc.), and the other in inner purification (i.e purification of the soul from spiritual maladies such as jealousy, pride, etc.).

Wudu physically cleanses the body and purifies it. Hence, it resembles that “half of Iman” which pertains to the outer purification.

Another explanation which the Muhaddithun have given, is that Iman refers to Salah. [like is the caes in Surah Baqarah, verse: 143]

Since Wudu is a condition for the validity of Salah, it has been referred to as half of it.

(Jami’ul ‘Ulumi wal Hikam, Hadith: 23; Also see: Al-Minhaj, Hadith: 533, Mirqat, Hadith: 281, and Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 5343)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.

Importance of Cleanliness in Islam| Quranic verses and Ahadith on Purity

Islam has given so much importance to cleanliness as it is considered to be a part of faith. Cleanliness and purification are one of the great exemptions of Islam. Islam places great stress on cleanliness, whether it’s in physical or spiritual terms. The attention to hygiene is the condition which was unfamiliar with any other religion before Islam. While people generally consider cleanliness or purification a desirable aspect, but Islam insists on it, making hygiene an essential part of faith. Cleanliness is an essential part of Islamic life. We can say the meaning and spirit behind the concept of cleanliness is above the slight concept of the traditional cleanliness. In Holy Quran Allah Almighty says: “Allah does not intend to inconvenience you, but He intends to purify you and perfect His favor to you, so that you may give thanks”. (Quran, 5:6)

Cleanliness and purification are of two types in which we have inner purification and outer purification.

Inner Purification: Inner purification c an be achieved by encouraging the five pillars of Islam. Having clean and pure thinking, avoiding sins, making a lot of dhikrs and most importantly making sure the heart is pure of spiritual affliction such as anger, hatred, relying on other people than Allah, pride, arrogance, etc.

Outer Purification: Outer purification can be obtained by proper bodily purification e.g. making ablution, taking bath, cleaning teeth, using fragrance, keeping house and clothes clean etc.

Our beloved Prophet (SAW) said about purity in one of His hadith in a way: “Cleanliness is half the faith (Emaan).”  (Sahih Muslim). So we can conclude that Cleanliness and purity are part of our faith which we have to take seriously in our lives. The   Holy Prophet (SAW) practiced cleanliness himself and ordered his companions to follow too. He kept his body and clothes clean, took bath on regular basis, liked the use of fragrance, liked to do Miswaak, He (PBUH) disliked the use of smelly things like garlic etc .and appreciated neat and attractive appearance.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The key to the prayer is cleanliness, its beginning is takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) and its ending is Salam (salutation).” (Abu Dawud). Islam has always encouraged the believer to be in a state of cleanliness both physically and spiritually. As mentioned above, one of the most important aspects of prayers is that a person should be clean before performing them five times a day.

There are many instructions in connection with health, hygiene and nutrition and about the cleanliness of air and environment in Islam. Some of them are listed below:

  • Wash your mouth and hands before and after a meal.
  • Keep food and water covered.
  • Offer Salah with clean body and clothes.
  • Use fragrance or perfume.
  • Comb your hair and use oil on the hair.
  • Take bath and perform ablution for offering prayers.
  • Go to bed early and rise early in the morning.
  • Go for a walk in the morning.
  • Keep your house and streets clean or we can say keep your environment clean.
  • Keep your clothes and body clean.
  • Do Miswak regularly.

Cleanliness is the pathway to health and strength. Islam wants a healthy and strong Muslim society which is capable of understanding and applying Allah’s message and carrying it away to the whole world. The Holy Quran says: “You are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah.” (Quran, 3:110)

In short, Cleanliness is a part of faith or we can say it is half the faith. We often clean our homes, brush our teeth daily, take bath, wash our clothes, wash dishes, use perfume. Do we realize that we are getting rewarded by Allah (SWT) for it? No, because generally we never think of doing these acts for an account of reward from Allah Almighty, we don’t do them for the pleasure of Allah as we are obeying his commands. May Allah give us the strength to obey His commands and get rewards and blessings from Him! Ameen
