‘Nizhal’ movie review: A unique mystery thriller

Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara starrer ‘Nizhal’ is making headlines as an edge of the seat thriller. As the trailer hints, the movie is a complete mystery thriller which excites the audience.

‘Nizhal’ marks the directorial debut of Appu N Bhattathiri who worked as an editor for many movies. Realizing Malayalis' interest in thriller movies, the director has made an attempt to give a new experience to the audience.

‘Nizhal’ which is described as a psychological thriller narrates the story by making the audience keep guessing without any boredom.

Appu Bhattathiri has proven that he can handle the director’s job very well. He was successful in keeping the intensity of the mystery throughout the movie.

The story is narrated with Kunchako Boban’s character John Baby. The story takes a twist when John meets a child named Nithin and the boy narrates stories of serial killings to him. John carries out investigations to unlock the mystery behind Nithin’s stories.

The story keeps the audience guessing about the next scene, At some point, viewers get confused about truth and fiction.

The movie also discussed that some matters in an individual’s subconscious mind may turn into facts.

The story is portayed making it more credible to the audience. Every situation and character is described apt to the story. The director was keen to give importance to each character. It must be noted that no character was added without any purpose.

Nayanthara’s character Sharmila also has much importance like Chackochan’s role. Her character plays a crucial role at a crucial phase of the story.

Saiju Kurup, Rony David, Divya Prabha and Lal are also seen in major roles.

Sanjeev S has penned the story. His efforts to make a perfect combo of a thriller movie deserves a great round of applause. Sooraj S Kurup has composed the background score and music.

The outstanding background score elevates the intensity of anxiety and fear as the story starts to unlock the mystery.

Editing by Appu Bhattathiri and Arun Lal also deserves special appreciation.

In short, ‘Nizhal’ is the best thriller you can’t miss this year. Apart from a thriller, the movie will give a fresh experience to the audience as a complete entertainer.

NIZHAL MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Nizhal is a mystery thriller, directed by Appu N. Bhattathiri and starring Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara in the lead roles.

Nizhal is the story of John Baby (Kunchacko Boban) and Nitin (Izin Hash), whose lives get intervened after the former faces a traumatic accident. Intrigued by the murder stories written by Nitin, John decides to unfold the instinct behind Nitin to orate such stories, and does he realize that the stories are actually based on true incidents. The what's and hows behind these incidents and their connection with Nitin forms the rest of the story.

The storyline of Nizhal is quite interesting, with a really great opportunity to spin out a terrific mystery thriller. The film progresses well in the beginning, but slowly, feels aimless at times, going off track, trying to just bulk up mystical elements to engage the audience. However, the movie has great visuals and a background score, with some fine performances.

Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara in the lead have perfectly got into the shoes of their respective characters. Though there was not a great scope for performance in the script, both being best at what they do, deliver good stuff to justify the characters.

The film kicks off well, giving high hopes, but as the story unfolds, it starts to feel tedious and lingering. Albeit, the movie is able to pull off the mood with its colour grading and appealing visuals.

The film is a nice attempt, with a plot that is compelling and thrilling enough. The movie could have kept the audience on pins and needles, but less engagement vis-a-vis writing makes it an average affair. The slow pace and the loopholes in the writing make it a dull watch as things progress.

S. Sanjeev’s screenplay gives the audience collywobbles, wondering where the story is going and what is going to happen next initially, but the build-up doesn’t hold a candle to the expectations it gave to its viewers. He pens the moments neat, each scene is defined well but is unable to knit all of them together in an enthralling way.

Deepak D. Menon’s cinematography is among the major highlights of the film. His visuals have contributed to the ambience of the film, disseminating the emotions and the mood in the right amount, evoking a sense of consternation in the audience. The colour tones used and the sound design of the film have lifted the flick’s emotional part successfully.

Directed by Appu N. Bhattathiri, Nizhal had good chances to be one of the best mystery-thrillers in Malayalam, if only the film had a much-seizing plot. The environment it was set up in was also fulfilling but missed out on the proper conveyance of the film.

Nizhal  boasts a knockout concept, and is intensely atmospheric throughout. I found certain moments genuinely chilling and incredibly creepy. Kunchacko Boban reprises his  Anjaam Pathiraa  act. Nayanthara’s character has only a very limited scope in the story for the most part. The kid, Izin Hash, who plays the central character, deserves special mention. The supporting cast too did fine.

The problem is with the lacklustre execution though, which packs no punch whatsoever. The lazy yet ambitious writing, which shows scattered glimpses of brilliance here and there, saves the narrative to some extent. But the storytelling ultimately gets bogged down in a sluggish pacing, coupled with some totally unnecessary and utterly disastrous attempts at humor, that too in…

The movie boasted a concept that had great scope if executed correctly. But that is where the movie failed miserably. It picked up things too many things that were intresting only to drop it without conclusion (like the PTSD angle where they spend too much time building up the first act while completely ignoring it in the third act).They should've created a tight woven script instead of spending time on these things.

I have to mention the last scene which I felt was completely unnecessary and I think that only helped to create confusion and made the ending somewhat inconclusive.

Nizhal is a thriller but not the kind that may come into your mind instantly when you hear the word ‘thriller’. It has a mix of investigation, creepy moments, mystery, suspense and twists — all that are needed to term a film as a thriller but the treatment is different from the usual. 

Nizhal gets one thing 100% right and that is setting up the mood . The visuals and background score play an incredible role in setting up the mysterious, moody and unpredictable tone from start to end. Modern-day Malayalam films need to be celebrated for their diversity. Most films have characters from different cultural, religious and ideological backgrounds. And this is beautifully presented by the names of the characters which are anything but conventional. For instance, the name of the protagonist in Nizhal is John Baby (Kunchacko Boban), and he supported in his day to day life by Ajith Kumar , Shalini, Dr Basheer, driver Kaif, constable Sainudheen and his colleague Vijayan. There is also a cook named Bahauddin. How often you come across characters in a mainstream film with such unique names. It feels like a conscious effort of filmmakers to avoid monotone in the narration and subtly remind us how we all are dependent on each other. And such vivid names makes a story feel more cosmopolitan, progressive and inclusive. A noble practice that filmmakers in other parts of the country could embrace.

However, just picking colourful names for characters cannot entirely salvage a film. For a film to work, you also need substance and style. Debutant director Appu N. Bhattathiri chooses a narrative style that is low on impact. He aims to pull the rug from under our feet, but barely moves us. The rug stays firmly in its place as he gives us a film that is high on promise and low on delivery.

The film opens with a road accident. We find out that the car that crashed into the bikers had John Baby behind the wheels. What starts as road rage ends in the tragic mishap. What’s more, the ill-tempered John Baby is a judge at a court and is often distracted by his emotions while doing his job. It is anyone’s guess how balanced and fair he would be in delivering judgement in the cases.

For some reason, his friend Dr. Shalini (Divya Prabha), a child psychologist, finds it necessary to discuss the case of a school kid who explained a murder in great detail in class, frightening everyone. The motive of Shalini seeking help from Baby, who is suffering from post-traumatic disorder since the accident, remains unclear. Baby also comes up with a lame excuse to justify why he’s taking such a special interest in helping the child, Nitin (Izin Hash). He might have simply said that he was attracted to Nitin’s mother Sharmela ( Nayanthara ). It would have been more plausible than the reason he gives for digging up the past.

The mystery at the centre of the story is Nitin. The eight-year-old boy knows about a series of murders that happened close to 30 years ago. How? Does he have some sort of gift where he could see ghosts? Or is he possessed by a ghost?

There are a few glaring logical holes in the narration that cannot be discussed without spoiling the suspense. The tone of the movie dull as the story fails to live up to the suspense created by the visuals. The script is so weak that it doesn’t demand a lot from the actors. While cinematographer Deepak D. Menon’s frames move around, the characters remain mostly stationary. For some time it adds to the suspense but as the movie progresses, it sort of becomes repetitive. Especially, Nayanthara remains a pretty face on the screen; an expensive cosmetic addition to the cast. She hardly tries to mimic the nightmarish feeling of a single mother, whose boy is trapped in some kind of a mysterious tangle.

Nizhal Malayalam Movie Review: Mystery Or Psychological thriller

Nizhal, a Malayalam mystery thriller film starring Nayanthara and Kunchacko Boban, is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The movie has received a wide range of reponse for its story and the lead roles' acting.

It s sure that the movie will be liked by the fans of mystery thrillers and psychological thrillers. The film has a significant impact on science fiction and thriller at the same time.

Nizhal (2021) takes the viewers along with the story with complete suspense and curiosity to know what will happen next. This movie has many positives with a minimal note of negatives. The first half of the film is comparatively better than the second part of the film.

The lead roles in the film are handled by Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara and  Izin Hash, Rony David, Lal, Saiju Kurup, and Divya Prabha in supporting roles. Every actor has done justice to their role by outstanding acting.

The story begins with a bike crash incident where the hero John Baby is met with an accident. He is psychologically affected, and he has an illusion of rain in his mind. He feels as it is raining but wonders why isn't he getting wet.

John is a chief judiciary Magistrate who gives proper justice in the cases. He often gets disturbed by his illusion, so he spends time with his friend Dr. Shalini, a psychologist. 

One day, Shalini discusses about a kid who narrates the stories about crime thrillers that happened 30 years. This triggered the curiosity of the hero, and he wished to meet the school kid. 

Hero somehow meets this kid's mother, Sharmila (Nayanthara), a working woman and a single parent of the kid. Nayanthara, in a situation, comes forward to know what is happening in the life of her son.

The movie travels by investigating deep into the story narrated by the kid.  John goes to the place where the boy mentions the story and searches for any shreds of evidence in the pond. When John tries to get in-depth in the story, he finds out the stories that the eight-year-old kid told were real.

For his shock, they found a skull inside the pond that shook the hero and made them proceed further. The story of the little kid deepens, and the discussions shift to the kid's father, who is no more. After this incident, much suspense will be revealed, which will be a turning point in the film

Following this, the movie will spotlight heroin, and the film travels to Lal, who made his role in a brilliant way. The connection between Sharmila and Vishwanathan is the pointed part of the story.

When it comes to the positives of the film, characters must be said along with cinematography and music. The film has no adult content, so it can be enjoyed watching with family. 

The negatives are witnessed only in the second phase of the film because the flashbacks will be narrated in dialogue s without visuals. There were minute trembles in the narration part conflicting between mystery or psychological thriller.

The film is a debut directorial of Appu. N. Bhattathiri and edited by Arunlal S. P. Deepak D. Menon handled the cinematography where Sooraj S. Kurup composed the original songs and background score.  Anto Joseph Film Company and Melange Film House, in association with Tentpole Movies, produced the film.
