Bans may help protect classroom focus, but districts need to stay mindful of students’ sense of connection, experts say

Students around the world are being separated from their phones.

In 2020, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that 77 percent of U.S. schools had moved to prohibit cellphones for nonacademic purposes. In September 2018, French lawmakers outlawed cellphone use for schoolchildren under the age of 15. In China, phones were banned country-wide for schoolchildren last year.

Supporters of these initiatives have cited links between smartphone use and bullying and social isolation and the need to keep students focused on schoolwork.

But some Harvard experts say instructors and administrators should consider learning how to teach with tech instead of against it, in part because so many students are still coping with academic and social disruptions caused by the pandemic. At home, many young people were free to choose how and when to use their phones during learning hours. Now, they face a school environment seeking to take away their main source of connection.

“Returning back to in-person, I think it was hard to break the habit,” said Victor Pereira, a lecturer on education and co-chair of the Teaching and Teaching Leadership Program at the Graduate School of Education.

Through their students, he and others with experience both in the classroom and in clinical settings have seen interactions with technology blossom into important social connections that defy a one-size-fits-all mindset. “Schools have been coming back, trying to figure out, how do we readjust our expectations?” Pereira added.

It’s a hard question, especially in the face of research suggesting that the mere presence of a smartphone can undercut learning .

Michael Rich , an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and an associate professor of social and behavioral sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says that phones and school don’t mix: Students can’t meaningfully absorb information while also texting, scrolling, or watching YouTube videos.

“The human brain is incapable of thinking more than one thing at a time,” he said. “And so what we think of as multitasking is actually rapid-switch-tasking. And the problem with that is that switch-tasking may cover a lot of ground in terms of different subjects, but it doesn’t go deeply into any of them.”

Pereira’s approach is to step back — and to ask whether a student who can’t resist the phone is a signal that the teacher needs to work harder on making a connection. “Two things I try to share with my new teachers are, one, why is that student on the phone? What’s triggering getting on your cell phone versus jumping into our class discussion, or whatever it may be? And then that leads to the second part, which is essentially classroom management.

“Design better learning activities, design learning activities where you consider how all of your students might want to engage and what their interests are,” he said. He added that allowing phones to be accessible can enrich lessons and provide opportunities to use technology for school-related purposes.

Mesfin Awoke Bekalu, a research scientist in the Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness at the Chan School, argues that more flexible classroom policies can create opportunities for teaching tech-literacy and self-regulation.

“There is a huge, growing body of literature showing that social media platforms are particularly helpful for people who need resources or who need support of some kind, beyond their proximate environment,” he said. A study he co-authored by Rachel McCloud and Vish Viswanath for the Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness shows that this is especially true for marginalized groups such as students of color and LGBTQ students. But the findings do not support a free-rein policy, Bekalu stressed.

In the end, Rich, who noted the particular challenges faced by his patients with attention-deficit disorders and other neurological conditions, favors a classroom-by-classroom strategy. “It can be managed in a very local way,” he said, adding: “It’s important for parents, teachers, and the kids to remember what they are doing at any point in time and focus on that. It’s really only in mono-tasking that we do very well at things.”

Research indicated that in 2020 Apple sold 15 million iPhones to consumers in the United States. Nowadays almost everyone has a cell phone with them at all times. Therefore, more and more adolescents and children are bringing their phones to school. Allowing cell phones in school has both its pros and cons. 

Cellphones at schools can have many benefits to a student’s education and safety. According to “Debating the Use of Digital Devices in the Classroom'' The Editorial Team reports '' If a teacher uses a term they don’t understand, they can find the answer discretely, and without interrupting the class,” Through phones, children and adolescents have access to the internet. This can be a helpful tool as it provides more information about what they are learning. As a result, a man is able to broaden his horizons. Phones also have apps that serve as notepads or as an alarm for study reminders. This can help improve a students’ test scores and grades. Furthermore, in the article “How to Deal with Cell Phones in School” Nancy Barile wrote, “Most schools allow students to have cell phones for safety, which seems unlikely to change as long as school shootings remain a common occurrence.” During a school lockdown, many rumors spread across social media making parents worried over their child’s life. With cell phones, students are able to contact their parents and reassure them that they are safe. Students are also able to give emergency responders directions and reports on what is going on through their cell phones. The pros of cell phones can heavily impact a scholars’ life.

On the other hand, phones can negatively impact a students’ ability to learn and their interaction with peers. In the text “How Phones Ruin Concentration” Rachel Ehmke states, “How bad could it really be? Pretty bad, according to a recent study that found the mere presence of a smartphone reduces a person’s ability to focus. In the study, undergraduates asked to leave their phones in another room did better on cognitive tests than those who were asked to silence their phones and leave them face down on their desk or in a bag.” When students have their phones with them in class, they tend to have the urge to scroll through social media, their messages, and the internet. They focus more on what is on their cell phone than on paying attention to what the teacher is saying. Consequently, students receive lower grades. Not only does a cell phone affect a student’s report card, but it also causes an increase in cyberbullying. According to the article “Cyberbullying”, Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph wrote, “Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. Online threats and mean, aggressive, or rude texts, tweets, posts, or messages all count. So does posting personal information, pictures, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass someone else.” Students who are able to take their phones to class have the opportunity to take pictures and videos of their peers and post it on the internet with a mean comment underneath. It is harder to attack someone in-person than through social media. People don’t feel as guilty and can block others when hearing negative feedback from them after making an attack towards someone or something. The impact of the cons of phones in the classroom can hurt not only the person that possesses the phone, but also the people around them. 

In conclusion, cell phones in school can negatively and positively impact a student’s life when pursuing an education. People must consider both the pros and cons when deciding if we should ban phones in school. Ray Kurzweil once said, “Mobile phones are misnamed. They should be called gateways to human knowledge.”

Should children bring their cell phones to school?

The debate about the positives and negatives of cell phones in the classroom is a fierce one. 

Like it or not, cell phones are a fundamental part of modern teen life. Research estimates that up to 95% of U.S teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are ‘almost constantly’ on the internet.

With shock statistics like that, it’s no wonder that so many educators, parents – and children themselves, are worried about the consequences of bringing phones to school. In an environment that should be all about learning, there’s fierce debate about the pros and cons of cellphones at school.

Like all issues regarding kids and our ever expanding digital world, it’s often about weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of bringing a cell phone to school, and making an individual decision about what’s best for your family. Let’s explore more.

Facts about cell phones at school

The fact of the matter is, a lot of teens are bringing their cell phones to school whether it’s against the rules or not. In fact, it’s thought that up to 95% of U.S teens take their cell phone to school. Shockingly, 92% admitted that they’d used their cell to text in class, and 10% even admitted to having texted during an exam. (Tindell and Bohlander, 2012).

The power that cell phones hold to distract teens isn’t limited to High School kids either, studies on the impact of cell phone use on U.S college students found that the more time a student spent online, the more sedentary they were. Perhaps even more tellingly, researchers Jacobsen and Forste (2011) reported a lower GPA (grade point average) in those students who spent a lot of time online.

What are the pros to cell phone use in school?

Some of the facts about cell phone use in class might be enough to get you to confiscate your teen’s device when they’re learning but what, if any, are the positives to having a cell phone at school?

Whether you agree with it or not, there are a number of pros to children taking their cell phones to school. Let’s take a look at some of the positives for bringing a phone into the classroom.

1. Personal safety and helping them to stay in touch

Being able to get in contact with your child easily and quickly is undoubtedly one of the biggest positives to having a cell phone at school. If you haven’t heard from them, or you need to update your plans for pick-up, the wonder of modern technology allows you to send a simple text or call.

If your child is a little older and has some independence, having their phone to contact friends about after school plans, letting them know of any last minute changes, delays, or exact meeting points are all major benefits to having a cell at school.

2. In case of emergencies

If there’s an emergency, or your child is in danger, being able to make a call because they have  a cell on them to call for help can be a lifeline. Likewise if something happens in your family and you need to get in touch, having a cell phone at school just adds that extra layer of personal protection to keep them safe.

3. Location, location, location

Tracking your child’s location and being able to pinpoint their exact whereabouts is another major positive for having a cell phone at school. If your child wanders from where they’re supposed to be, or you haven’t heard from them for a while, being able to spot check their location to ensure they’re safe is a definite pro to having a cell phone at school. 4. Managing anxieties and children with additional needs

Not all children are confident and outgoing at school. Some may have anxieties about being away from their parents, or might feel uncomfortable and distracted if they don’t know the plans ahead of them. Having a cell phone at school to provide reassurance for more nervous children, or ones who have special educational needs, is a great way to have a line to them to manage anxieties and give them that added confidence boost that will enable them to focus better on their school work.

5. Opportunities for learning

Cell phones are about so much more than simple communication. With a smartphone, your child has a world of answers at their fingertips. This ever-expanding encyclopedia is excellent news for the ever-curious, vociferous learners who want to learn more. Cell phones can be brilliant learning tools within the classroom, helping students research and delve deeper into a topic. If your child wants to learn more about what they’re working on, or has unanswered questions about a class, having their cell phone handy to Google information is a definite positive to phones at school.

This is also a positive benefit for children who perhaps aren’t as confident to speak out in class, or aren’t as comfortable with learning. Having their cell phone at hand at school in order to check things before they speak, or share, can give them the added confidence boost they need to keep grades up.

6. Social learning and friendship benefits

No one wants their child to spend all day on social media apps, but there are certain platforms that can be used for education as well as fun. Connecting with classmates in forums and chat groups about study and homework is a great pro to having a cell phone at school. Perhaps there are study groups that share answers, research and ideas through messaging apps, or private social groups on Facebook or similar for certain subjects. That’s all a plus to having a phone at school.

7. Record now and revise again later!

Note taking has had a 21st Century makeover in the form of voice notes and video recording through cell phones. It might not always be appropriate, or within school guidelines, but If it’s allowed by the teacher, what better advantage to having a cell phone in the classroom, can there be than the ability to capture their lessons to learn more later? Children are able to record and rewatch their lessons at a later date – perfect for revision time when exam season rolls around.

8. Learning balance and life skills

Let’s face it, the popularity of cell phones and social media platforms isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. One day, the children and teens in the classroom right now will be the ones filling our offices and crucial services. And, when it comes to the world of work, teens will need to find the self-discipline to balance checking their cell against getting their job done!

Having cell phones in the classroom gives children a positive opportunity to learn and develop life skills that will enable them to manage their screen time and how to balance and manage the time they spend online.

There are lots of advantages to children taking their cell phone to school. With careful management, and clear guidelines, it can be something that promotes learning, personal safety and socializing.

But there are cons.

What are the disadvantages of children taking cell phones to school?

Nothing is completely positive, and cell phones at school are no exception. With every opportunity to learn comes an opportunity to be distracted. Here are some of the most common reasons why cell phones aren’t a good idea in the classroom.

1. They’re a huge distraction

From gaming to sexting, cell phones come hand-in-hand with lots of distractions that just aren’t appropriate for the learning environment and school. Texting people in class, sharing memes, gaming, listening to music and even sneaking a peek at YouTube,  there are endless opportunities for children to be distracted with their cell phone at hand in the classroom. Undoubtedly, this is one of the major worries and biggest cons of having a cell phone at school. Many educators ask for, and ban, the phone within the classroom and ask that they are turned off and indeed in(!) at the start of class.

2. Cell phones can be a channel for bullying

Unfortunately, there’s a nefarious type of bullying that comes along with the rising popularity of the smartphone – cyberbullying.

What once might have been a pulled ponytail or nasty note shared in class has evolved into a much more insidious pattern of behavior that’s being witnessed in schools around the world. In fact, the European Commission’s Joint Research Center found that 50% of 10-18 year olds had experienced cyberbullying at least once.

Cyberbullying is a major concern for parents and educators. Teachers report that cyberbullying is the number one safety concern in their classrooms according to a Google survey (January 2019).

The reality of having cell phones in the classroom means that embarrassing pictures, nasty messages and name-calling can happen where the teachers can’t see, and it’s one of the biggest reasons why many parents want cell phones to stay out of the classroom.

3. Digital addictions and mental health concerns

Since smartphones burst into our lives on a grand scale over a decade ago, incidences of teen depression have risen 50%. Many parents and teachers believe that the classroom should be a place of regular and routine break from the relentless digital lifestyles many children and teens are forced to live.

Banning phones in the classroom gives a really great opportunity for children to reset and take a well-needed break from their device. Many educators advocate that cell phones stay in the locker for the day and only be used at breaks, recess and when parents and caregivers need to be contacted.

4. Cheating in exams and learning the wrong way

It’s hardly surprising that some teens can’t resist the lure of Google – especially if too much screen time has been slowly eating into the time they should have spent on studying and they’re falling behind. And, for some, the ability to just look online for answers instead of spending time researching and learning things the hard way, can stop them from deep learning on a subject.

The ability to have a cheat sheet in your pocket is not only risky (the consequences of cheating in tests are never good), but it’s not fair. Cheating is not an accurate representation of a child’s academic ability, it’s also unfair for the students who have studied and followed the rules.

So, what’s the answer to the cell phones in school debate?

Most of us can agree that the addictive nature of cell phones, and the instant access to games, videos and social apps that they give, provides a lot of distractions for children in the classroom. Fears over cyber bullying, and the relative ease of cheating in exams, are all major cons to bringing cellphones to school.

However, modern life often requires us to have cell phones. From banking to checking when the next bus will arrive, smartphones are our link to the world around us. And, when it comes to our children, ensuring that they have a way to feel safe, can call for help, update on their movements, and to be able to check where they are, are all major benefits to having cell phones at school.

For many, these convenience and safety positives outweigh the potential downsides. With careful management of the device, ensuring children follow school policies, and educating children about the importance of being responsible and mature with their cell phone is fundamental to not letting the disadvantages outweigh the positives of bringing cell phones to school.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Allowing Cell Phones in School

As cell phones become increasingly prevalent among both adults and youth, many schools face an important question of policy -- whether or not to ban the phones on school grounds. Arguments both for and against allowing cell phones at schools tend to boil down to appropriate use and the effects of the phone's presence. Educators looking to make a decision for or against phones in the classroom generally need to look at both the positives and the negatives about allowing such devices.

Pro: Emergencies

Having a cell phone on hand enables a student to quickly summon assistance in the middle of an emergency. Incidences of violent attacks at a school, fires, kidnappings, medical emergencies and other emergencies can be reported quickly so that the appropriate authorities dispatched. Without the cell phones available on the scene, valuable time can be lost finding a nearby phone, dialing out of the school's phone network, and finally contacting the authorities.

Con: Student Distraction

Cell phones, and especially smartphones, can present considerable distraction to their owners and nearby classmates. Distractions come in the form of text messages, phone calls, unrestricted Internet access and any number of entertaining applications. When set to run silently, these phones can also distract both when students are in class and during free periods that ordinarily could be dedicated to studying.

Pro: Parental Contact

Allowing students to carry cell phones gives parents the ability to contact their children whenever necessary. This can include during family emergencies or when a student may need to arrange a different method of getting home. Likewise, students can contact their parents to arrange a ride home when ill, or they can request a forgotten book or project be brought to the school.

Con: Class Disruption

A cell phone going off can be extremely disruptive in the middle of class, interrupting a lecture or breaking student concentration during a test. Cell phones don't always simply make noise to inform of an incoming call; incoming text messages, low battery alerts and alerts from applications can all make disruptive noise or produce disruptive light.

Pro: Difficult Enforcement

Enforcing a cell phone ban can be be difficult and decidedly time-consuming. Most students are likely to carry the phone anyway in case of an emergency, and taking time to note every offense against the ban wastes the time that an educator could be using to teach students. Confiscating phones can lead to confrontations with parents, adding further administrative gridlock that can otherwise be avoided. As a result, acceptance can be a less time-consuming option than a ban.

Allowing cell phones in schools invites the risk of theft. Many cell phones, and especially smartphones, can be particularly appealing targets to criminals who can remove or extract user data and then resell the phones. Keeping students' phones out of the school eliminates the risk of theft, and prevents the need for costly replacement of the phones.

Pro: Child Location

Most modern phones include a GPS transmitter that details the phone's location. While these transmitters are generally included for use in applications or monitoring the phone's location for roaming assessment, they also can be used to locate the owner in cases where they've gone missing. This can be vital in locating delinquent students or those who've gone missing during school hours.

Con: Cheating

With most smartphones featuring a fully featured Web browser, the potential for cheating has grown exponentially. Clever students can subtly look up the answers to test questions using search engines such as Google or online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia. While careful monitoring often eliminates this issue, the potential for mischief is still considerable.

Victorian education minister James Merlino’s announcement mobile phones will be banned for all students at state primary and secondary schools is certainly a bold move.

The policy has been justified as a direct response to mounting levels of cyberbullying, concerns over distractions and schools struggling with discipline relating to students’ misuse of phones.

Students will have to switch off their phones and store them in lockers from the start of the school day until the final bell. In case of an emergency, parents or guardians can reach their child by calling the school.

The minister said in a statement :

The only exceptions to the ban will be where students use phones to monitor health conditions, or where teachers instruct students to bring their phone for a particular classroom activity.

Whether to allow student use of mobile phones in school is certainly a hot topic in education. The Victorian announcement follows a French government ban on mobiles in school in 2018. Debates on the issue are also taking place in Denmark , Sweden and the United Kingdom .

There is considerable public support for banning mobiles. In our recently conducted survey of more than 2,000 Australian adults, nearly 80% supported a ban on mobile phones in classrooms. Just under one-third supported an outright ban from schools altogether.

Support for a classroom ban was remarkably consistent across different demographics, including political affiliation and age group.

But while banning phones from classrooms, and from school altogether, might seem sensible, there are number of reasons to be cautious. It’s clear we need to carefully consider how we want to make use of digital devices being brought into schools. But previous experience, such as in New York, suggests a blanket ban might introduce even more problems.

And the little research evidence that addresses the issue is mixed.

What’s the evidence?

Reports of cyberbullying have clearly gone up among school-aged children and young people over the past ten years, but the nature and precedents of cyberbullying are complex.

Research suggests there is a large overlap between cyberbullying and traditional forms of bullying, which wouldn’t then follow that digital devices are somehow causing these behaviours.

Cyberbullying also often takes place outside school hours and premises. There is a danger banning phones from classrooms might distract education staff from having to continue with efforts to address the more immediate causes of cyberbullying.

There is also a growing literature exploring the links between digital devices and classroom distractions. The presence of phones in the classroom is certainly found to be a source of multi-tasking among students of all ages – some of which can be educationally relevant and much of which might not.

But the impact of these off-task behaviours on student learning outcomes is difficult to determine. A review of 132 academic studies concluded, it is

difficult to determine directions and mechanisms of the causal relations between mobile phone multitasking and academic performance.

There is also a strong sense from classroom research that issues of distraction apply equally to laptops , iPads and other digital devices.

All told, the sense from academic literature is that the realities of smartphone use in classrooms are complex and decidedly messy. Our own research into how smartphones are being used in Victorian classrooms highlighted the difficulties teachers face in policing student use (what some teachers described as requiring “five minutes of firefighting” at the beginning of every lesson).

Despite this, we also found instances of students using smartphones for a range of beneficial purposes – from impromptu information seeking to live-streaming lessons for sick classmates.

These benefits are also reflected in classroom studies elsewhere in the world. Research from Stanford University has demonstrated , for instance, that with proper support and preparation, teachers in even the most challenging schools can “build on the ways students already use technology outside of school to help them learn in the classroom”.

There is now a whole academic field known as “ m-Learning ” where researchers have explored the pedagogical and learning advantages of using mobile devices (including phones) in lessons.

But what about a blanket ban from school altogether? Experience from elsewhere suggests enforcing a mobile ban in schools may not be as easy as it sounds.

What we can learn from others

The New South Wales government announced a review into the benefits and risks of mobile phone use in schools in June 2018, led by child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg. At the review’s completion, the government said it would only ban mobile phones from the state’s primary schools, leaving secondary schools free to make their own choice.

We recognise that technology plays an important and increasing role as students progress through their education […] We want to give secondary schools the flexibility to balance the benefits and risks of technology in the way that best supports their students.

Perhaps the most pertinent example is the ban enforced in New York City from 2006, that was eventually lifted in 2015.

The reasons given for this reversal highlighted several of the concerns the new ban in Victoria will likely face. They include practical difficulties of enforcing a ban in the classroom being exacerbated by banning of phone use during break times and lunchtimes.

First, it was clear the New York ban was being inconsistently enforced by schools – with better resourced schools in more affluent areas more likely to bend the rules and permit student use. In contrast, schools in lower-income areas with metal detectors were more likely to be rigidly enforcing the ban.

Other motivations for lifting the ban were concerns over student safety such as the need for students to contact family members during break times and lunchtimes. Families were also incurring costs to store phones securely outside of the school. There was also a recognition teachers should be trusted to exercise their professional judgement as to how they could be making good educational use of devices in their lessons.

At the same time, it was reckoned government resources were better directed toward supporting students to learn how to use technology responsibly through cyber-safety lessons.

All these reasons are as relevant now to Victorian schools as they were to New York City schools in 2015. The use (and non-use) of mobile phones in schools is certainly an issue we need to have a proper conversation about. But it might not be as clear-cut as the recent policy announcements suggest.

Mobile phones are something you will see everywhere today, among children, senior citizens, laborers, workers of every kind. Mobile phones went viral faster than any other plague in the history of this world. However mobile phones have made their transformations from one form to another over the past couple of months.

When the first of the mobile phones came out, there was a sense of shock among people. People were shocked to see a handy gadget that went on further to replace landline phones. But you can say that their shock was expected. Anything that’s big in size suddenly is handed over to you, telling you that it does the same work as that big landline but when you look it, you see a small device with some numbers printed on it.

Mobile phone revolutionized the face of communications among people. You couldn’t carry your landline anywhere but you sure can carry your mobile phone anywhere you desire. You are literally carrying a mean of communication in your pocket. All you have to do is take your mobile phone out, call the number you desire, have your conversation, and it isn’t even that expensive.

Mobile phones changed their forms from a simple flip phone all the way to the smartphones we use today. Smartphones took over the flip phones as they were very easily replaceable. The question arises? Are smartphones replaceable, and the answer is NO! , no for now, we don’t know what might happen in future but for now smartphones is the easiest way of communication.

We are in the age of technology where everything around you is made up of some technological agenda, or is using some technology in its use / making. Smartphones were the main reason why we call the modern age, the age of technology. We now know that mobile phones have made our lives easier, but anything that advantages also comes with some disadvantages.

Mobile phone itself has no disadvantages but when you look beyond the vision inside of your everyday mobile usage, you will notice a few flaws in the use. Misusage of mobile phones is quite common these days; the biggest suspect behind this misuse is the social media. We are social media slaves, everything we do, we see, or wherever we go has to be updated on the social media for the whole world to see. Misusage of mobile phones also comprises of blasphemy content that offends anyone. Social media today is full of blasphemy content, and all the started when mobile phones became more common than ever.

Misusage of mobile phones among children is quite typical now in today’s age. Even the 12 year olds today carry mobile phones with them everywhere they go, yes it’s a fact that mobile phones today have become a need for communication but don’t you think it’s actually diverting growing minds from the real worlds, and dragging them further into the virtual worlds.

People today have not only become just a visual representation of themselves but their reality is slowing fading away in the winds of what we call technology. Mobile phones today carry every kind of facility, when you ask yourself for something you can’t do with your mobile phone i can bet that there is absolutely nothing you can come up with.

Misusage of mobile phones is also declining the ethical values we had amongst ourselves. Socializing with real people is not quite common now, and even private conversations happen on mobile phones, and not in real. This is not only an arising problem today but this is a problem that is ruining the thought of the young ones that are attracted, and use mobile phones on a daily basis.

I am not against the use of mobile phones, or the existence of mobile phones but I am solely against the misuse of mobile phones, which is slowly indirectly affecting our health, and our well-being.
