When starting from scratch, you'll go section by section, entering your education, employment history, hobbies and interests, professional skills, languages and references. Resume.com provides question prompts and tips for guidance, as well as career-specific examples you can add if you're struggling to find the right words. You can also choose to forgo any of these sections, rearrange sections and add custom ones depending on what you need. As you update and save each section, you can see how it will appear on the page on your resume preview to the right. The website Resume Genius says you can "make a professional resume in 12 minutes." We tested it out and indeed had a solid first draft of an easy resume completed in about 10 minutes. Resume Genius takes you step-by-step through the process, prompting you with questions about your education and work experience to help you fill out the applicable sections. Resume Genius is particularly helpful because you can search for a job and see prewritten text for the description that you can add or edit. When finished, you can easily toggle between different templates to see what looks best for the final product. You also have the option to directly share your resume with Indeed or Resume Library. 

The site can also help you build cover letters and curriculum vitae. After you input all your information, you can choose different layout styles and colors. It's easy to move through, but you have to do it in order and fill in all the information before continuing. Resume Genius also offers examples of resumes, CVs and cover letters for specific jobs, as well as recommended jobs near you. You can download the resume you create for $3 (which starts a 14-day trial for Resume Genius Pro), or $8 (which kicks off a monthly subscription plan). However, if you fail to cancel your trial before the 14 days are up, you'll be billed $25 every four weeks ($95 annually), according to the site. 

On Trustpilot at the time of this publication, the site has 4.8 out of 5 stars based on more than 38,000 reviews. Note that if you register on the site, Resume Genius does collect personally identifiable information and may share it with third parties for advertising and other purposes, according to its privacy policy. The account deletion process is buried in the Terms of Service . According to Resume Genius, complete data erasure can take up to 30 days, but they may retain "certain information in accordance with privacy laws."

Resume Star 2 isn't the most visually stunning resume design app for iOS, but it gets the job done. To use, tap each section of the resume, fill in your information and it will fill in a traditional template (you only get one layout). The app offers some example resumes you can start with and edit as needed, including job-specific ones for a: cashier, dental hygienist, receptionist, waitress, mechanic and senior manager.

You can add or delete any sections you like without needing to hit save every time you add in information, and you can see your resume update as you go. The autosave feature makes it easy to toggle quickly between the different sections as well. At the end, you'll have a basic resume ready to go. The app's interface doesn't offer as much guidance about how to write your resume or what types of information to include. If you need extra help, tap the information icon in the bottom left and choose the Resume Writing Guide. This will open up a crash course on resume writing in your mobile browser. It also includes a job search feature. 

The app collects payment via donations after you use the service -- you don’t have to pay if you don’t want to. The app connects to iCloud, and you can export your resume as a PDF to any location on your device(s). If you are happy with the service, you can choose the $6 "helped a bit" tier, a standard donation of $10, or the "really helped me" tier for $25. 

Resume Star 2 has a 4.8 out of 5 rating, and more than 1,800 ratings in the App Store . A letter of recommendation is a formal document confirming and recommending a person’s work, skills, or academic performance and potential. 

Typically, a recommendation letter is required for: 

  • University admissions
  • Fellowships or internship positions
  • Job applications
  • Volunteering opportunities

You should ideally write a recommendation for someone whose abilities and work ethic you are familiar with - for example, a colleague, student you taught, your employee, or someone you supervised at work.

Similarly, if you’re the one asking for a recommendation letter, you should ask someone who can attest to your professional or academic abilities. 

The types of recommendation letters are:

  • Academic recommendation letters.
  • Employment recommendation letters.
  • Character recommendation letters.

Here’s what each type of recommendation letter is about:

#1. Academic Recommendation Letters

Academic recommendation letters are typically required to be submitted by students during the admission processes of graduate and undergraduate schools. 

Generally, each prospective student is requested to submit up to three references, which can be written by any education professional familiar with the candidate’s academic background. 

Academic reference letters include:

  • Recommendation letter for undergraduate/graduate school
  • Recommendation letter for a scholarship
  • Recommendation letter for a fellowship program

#2. Employment recommendation letters 

This type makes up the most popular type of recommendation letter.

Sometimes, employers can ask you to submit up to 3 recommendation letters as part of your job application.

More often, though, a recruiter might ask you for recommendation letters if they already like your resume and want to learn more about you. 

Employment recommendation letters are written by former - or current - coworkers, employers, or supervisors.

If you can choose, pick someone with more years of experience than you. After all, the more senior they are, the more weight their recommendation carries.

Employment recommendations include: 

  • Recommendation letter for a coworker
  • Recommendation letter for a (former) employee

#3. Character recommendation letters

Character recommendation letters, also known as personal references, are used to describe an individual’s personality by someone who knows them well, including close friends, coworkers, or employers. 

Personal references serve many purposes, the primary ones being court cases dealing with criminal issues such as drunk driving offenses, or legal situations such as child adoption procedures. 

It is not uncommon, however, to have a potential landlord or even immigration officials ask for a personal reference. 

Personal references include: 

  • Recommendation letter for a friend
  • Recommendation letter for a tenant
  • Recommendation letter for a patient

Recommendation letters follow a particular format and layout that make writing them significantly easier. 

In this section, we’ll cover how to do each the right way, starting with:

Letter of Recommendation Format

A letter of recommendation includes the following sections: 

  • The salutation ; if you are addressing someone whose name you know or writing a personal recommendation letter, the salutation can be addressed to “Dear Mr./Mrs./Dr. Smith.” Otherwise, you may use the generic “to whom it may concern.”
  • The introduction , which first and foremost includes your statement of recommendation (i.e. “ it is my pleasure to recommend… ”). It is common to also briefly state who you are and what your expertise is.
  • The overview, or a description of the applicant’s top skills, attributes, and strengths.
  • A personal story describing more of the applicant’s skills and qualifications.
  • The closing statement , or the final call for action, is where you encourage the recruiter to contact you if additional information is needed.
  • The signature , where you repeat your name and include your full contact information.

Letter of Recommendation Layout 

When it comes to the layout of the recommendation letter, all you need to do is follow some basic formatting rules. Here are the most important ones: 

#1. One page length. This rule applies to resumes too, but it’s even more essential for the recommendation letter. Recruiters go through hundreds of them, so chances are they appreciate concise, to-the-point letters that don’t waste their time. And besides, a good recommendation letter doesn’t have to be an essay to get the recruiter ‘hooked’ - especially if you follow the above format. 

#2. Single-spaced lining, with space between paragraphs . This also keeps your reference letter within the limit by shortening the text. 

#3. Traditional font. Don’t go for something too creative - pick a classic that works. We recommend Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial, Ubuntu, Roboto or Overpass.

#4. 1” margins on all sides . This creates enough white space around the margins and makes the letter easy to read. Additionally, the text should be aligned to the left - although this is a standard alignment for most documents.    

#5. 10-12pt font size . This is the font size range that makes the document easy to read. Adjusting the font size is another good way to keep your recommendation letter within the length limit.

How to Ask for a Recommendation Letter 

Need to ask someone for a recommendation letter? Here’s what you need to know.

The go-to person for your recommendation letter will depend on the type of reference you’ll need. 

For example, if you need an employment recommendation letter , your top choices should involve people who are familiar with your work ethic and professional abilities, but with whom you’ve also had a positive professional relationship. For example:

  • Your team lead
  • Department head
  • CEO of the company
  • Direct manager
  • A coworker you’ve worked with together on a project

If you are a recent graduate with little work experience, you can ask a mentor or college professor to write you a professional reference. 

In case you need an academic recommendation letter , consider asking a professor with whom you’ve worked closely and can positively attest to your academic potential and achievements.

Your thesis advisor, for example, would make a good choice to ask for an academic reference. If you never wrote a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, any professor who knows you as more than just a face in a sea of students should do the trick. 

Finally, keep the following in mind when the time comes to ask for a recommendation letter: 

  • Whoever you end up asking, talk to them about it in advance . Then, follow up with a formal email that should contain all reference-related information, such as the submission details and deadline. The email can also include a description of what you’re currently doing (professionally, academically, or independently), what qualifies you for the position, and some relevant skills, achievements, or noteworthy facts.
  • If you’re asking for a professional recommendation letter, make sure to also include your resume and the job description in the follow-up email. This way, the person writing the letter will know more about you and your new position and will be able to write a more relevant recommendation by tailoring your skills to the job, or by mentioning some of your (relevant) achievements.
  • Notify the contacts you’ll be asking - considering that in most cases recruiters ask for up to three recommendation letters - at least two weeks in advance. This will give them enough time to prepare and write a good recommendation letter. This is especially important for academic references because professors are usually writing several recommendation letters simultaneously.
  • Consider attaching a recommendation letter template such as the one provided in this article to your email. The template will considerably ease or guide them through the process of writing the letter.
  • Follow up by sending thank you notes to everyone who writes you a recommendation letter. Sending a letter of appreciation is a courtesy act that will let them know you are grateful for the time and effort they took to recommend you positively.

5 Tips on How to Write a Letter of Recommendation

There’s more to writing a recommendation letter than just following the layout instructions or sticking to the format.

We’re referring to content quality, which happens to be the trickiest part of the process. 

In this section, we’ll teach you how to write a recommendation letter that will impress the recruiter and help your referee!

Tip #1. Write an Attention-Grabbing Introduction  

First things first - the introduction.

This is where you need to grab the reader’s attention and get them interested in reading the recommendation letter. 

How to go about it? Before formally (and briefly) introducing yourself, aim to write an attention-grabbing recommendation statement, instead of a generic one the recruiter probably knows by heart already. 

Let’s explain this more practically: 

Dear Mr. Smith, 

I am pleased to recommend Sarah McKay for the Communications Assistant position.

Nothing wrong with this introduction at first glance, right? It’s a standard way of opening a recommendation letter after all. 

Well that’s exactly what’s wrong with it - it’s way too common. No, this probably won’t get your application disqualified, but it won’t impress the recruiter either.

Want yours to strike the right note? Try something like this instead:

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am sincerely glad to be the one recommending Sarah McKay for the Communications Assistant position.

This recommendation statement is not significantly different from the previous one, except for one thing: it gives the reference letter a head start by implying that recommending Sarah is an honor. And that’s more likely to get the recruiter’s attention - or, at least, curiosity. 

In case you’re struggling to come up with an attention-grabbing introduction, simply mention one of the following points, and you’re good to go: 

  • A little-known fact about the candidate. 
  • Your general consideration of the candidate’s qualities.
  • A remarkable achievement or award the candidate might have won.  

Tip #2. Establish a Meaningful Relationship With the Candidate 

All recommendation letters explain what the relationship with the referee is before listing their skills and qualifications. 

To make the recommendation more meaningful, you should show the recruiter you are just the right person to attest to the candidate’s abilities. And that’s not something you can convey by simply stating how you know them. Take the following example:   

I have taught Jake Political Science for four years. 

Does this example tell the recruiter how you know the applicant? Sure, it does. 

But it does so in a boring way and without establishing a convincing relationship with them. For all the recruiter knows, Jake is just one out of a thousand students you’ve taught over the years.

It has been a pleasure for me to teach Jake for four years and guide him through his remarkable Bachelor’s thesis in Conflict Resolution.

Notice the difference? This example specifies the writer is Jake’s thesis advisor, which makes the recommendation all the more meaningful. 

Tip #3. Tailor Your Recommendation to the Application 

Want to put in the extra effort and make sure your referee truly stands out?

Tailor the recommendation letter to the job / university program they’re applying for.

Tailoring your letter to the candidate’s application is easiest when you’re recommending someone for employment (you can just check the job requirements), but it works for any type of recommendation (incl. academic). This practice has become less common over the years, with most career experts now recommending not to include references on a CV , and simply state, ‘References available on request’ .

Your references are people, called referees, who know you well, have worked with you before and can vouch for you to the prospective employer. They can testify about your character, personal qualities , skills and abilities to prospective employers.

You could consider your referees as your personal advocates or ambassadors.

As part of the recruitment process, it is standard practice for the employer to contact your referees, either by phone or in writing, to get more information about you before they make you a formal job offer.

Employers don’t just take your word for it, they want someone independent to provide an unbiased opinion on your work, skills, attitude, commitment and disposition.

For example, you may have said on your CV that you have ‘excellent communication skills’ or ‘willing to take responsibility’ , so the employer would like to check the credibility of these claims by getting your referees’ perspectives on these matters.

Standard questions that employers may ask your referees are:

  • How long have you known ‘x’ and in what capacity?
  • How well did he/she do his/her work/job/assignment?
  • Is this person organised, punctual and able to meet deadlines?
  • What were their major contributions to the organisation/department?
  • Can this person get along with people?
  • Can they work unsupervised?
  • Is this person employable?
  • Will they be a good fit for this job role and our organisation?
  • Should we consider hiring them?
  • Anything we need to know before we consider offering this person the job?

Now that you know the type of questions your referees will likely get asked, you can address some of these things in your conversations with your references to refresh their memory and recall your good points and strengths. For example, you could say “You remember when I did ‘x’ and you said it was good because…” etc.

Normally an employer will only approach your referees after the job interview when they are about the offer you the job, not before it. Employers receive hundreds of applications per vacancy and shortlist around a dozen or more for job interviews; so it doesn’t make sense for them to take up references of candidates who are not going to get a job offer anyway.

You are required to provide two references; one being your current or former employer (if you have one) and the other someone who knows you well such as your former teacher. The number of references may vary, however, depending on the circumstances of the applicant. For example, it’s fine for school leavers to only include one reference, and for college students without work experience to include two academic staff (teacher, tutor or lecturer) instead of one academic and one professional reference.

No, you are not required to write your references on your CV. In most cases, it is a waste of valuable space as employers typically don’t require your references until the later stages of the requirement process, i.e. after the job interview. You can simply write “References are available on request” at the end of your CV.

Furthermore, research conducted by John Lees, one of the UK’s best-known career coaches and authors, showed that less than a third of employers prefer to see references on a CV. The remaining 70% of recruiters either didn’t mind the inclusion of it or didn’t want candidates to waste valuable space of their CVs with this information. ( Why You? In some cases, it could be required or beneficial to add references on your CV; for example, when specifically requested by the employer, to impress the recruiter with the fame/status of your referees, to speed things up with your application, to give your CV a bit more credibility and to fill up blank space at the end of the CV.

Some employers may request that you provide your references, supporting documents and/or recommendation letters as part of the first stages of the job application process (i.e. before being invited for a job interview). They usually do this to ensure that only the most suitable candidates are shortlisted for an interview.

If this is the case, you must provide your references to the employer, either through their job application form or by including them on your CV. Most employers, however, will not ask for this information until the later stages of the selection process. Check the job advertisement for any instructions. If references are not requested, it is commonly accepted practice to note on your CV, ‘References are available on request.’

Your referee may be a respectable or well-known person or dignitary whose fame and status in society may impress the employer; for example, a local MP, dean of a university, director of a famous company, police commissioner, councillor or someone who has received an honorary award (e.g. MBE).

Note: This strategy may not always work. Impressive referees usually don’t know the candidate too well so their responses are usually very brief and vague – not helping the cause of the candidate!

Including references on your CV could speed up your application and also make life easier for employers who may want to speak to your references before the interview stage or just after the interview.

By providing this information beforehand, they can instantly ‘check you out’ at any stage of the selection process without any delays. Remember, recruiters are under no obligation only to contact your referees after the job interview stage.

Psychologically speaking, adding references gives your CV a little more ‘weight’ and credibility because it demonstrates that you are confident of your own track record and that you have people who will vouch for your suitability for the job whenever required.

Not all applicants can provide credible references.

It also gives the impression that you have nothing to hide; for example, a bad track record, having no referees at all or having been fired from your previous job.

If you are a student or lack relevant work experience, employers usually would like to see the name and contact details of a lecturer/tutor/teacher on your CV – it could give your CV that little bit more credibility.

After including all the essential information on your CV, you may end up with some blank space at the end of it, especially if you are a school leaver, college student, recent graduate or someone without any work experience.

A CV should be presented in full pages , with no space left at the end of the page.

Given the aforementioned benefits of adding references on your CV, and to improve the overall presentation of your CV, you could include references on your CV to fill up the blank space and make your CV look “complete.”

The general rule is not to include references on a CV, especially for candidates with a lot of relevant work experience and such as senior officers, managers and executives.

Rachel Bishop-Firth, an experienced recruiter and personnel manager, writes in The Ultimate CV (pg.97): “Don’t use up valuable space on your CV with details of your references, as the employer doesn’t need this information until the final stages of the selection process. Simply state, ‘References available on request’ .”

  • References are not required at the early stages of the recruitment process. Most employers will only take up your references after the job interview and before the formal job offer. Before that stage, this information is not required and shouldn’t be included in a CV.
  • It takes up valuable space. Including references on a CV takes up valuable space (almost half a dozen lines!) which can be better utilised for more important information such as your work experience, skills and achievements. Some applicants even exceed the 2-page length limit of their CVs by including references, which is obviously a very bad idea!
  • It could raise red flags. Adding references to your CV and not listing your current or previous employer could raise serious suspicions in the mind of the recruiter, something which will negatively impact the credibility of your CV. An employer will wonder, ‘Did they get fired?’ or ‘Was there a conflict?’
  • It could expose your next career steps. Recruiters expect you to include your current employer/manager as one of your referees. It may be the case that you do not want your current employer to know that you’re looking to leave, so it makes sense to retain control of your references until you have passed the interview stage and are about to be offered the job.
  • You can better brief your referees. The advantage of giving your references after the interview is that it gives you a great deal of intelligence about the job. Armed with these insights, you can then decide on which referees would be the most suitable to speak about these matters and brief them on all the details you have about the job and the ideal candidate. You can remind them of how you would be a suitable candidate for the role by mentioning your relevant work experience and transferable skills . This fine-tuning can be highly effective.
  • References can be provided on request. As mentioned previously, most employers do not need your references until the very end of the recruitment process. If employers require this information before that, they can request it from you, hence, it is sufficient to write, “Available upon request.”
  • It could annoy your referees. Some employers may contact your referees before the job interview or formal job offer, bombarding them with many reference requests that could take up a lot of their time and not even result in a job interview or formal job offer!

It is recommended to provide two references on your CV; one professional and one personal. The professional reference should come from your current or former employer, while the personal reference could come from any person who knows you well and can vouch for you, such as your personal tutor, teacher or supervisor.

  • Current or former employer, line manager or supervisor
  • School or college teacher, personal tutor or mentor
  • University lecturer or project supervisor
  • Sports coach or personal trainer
  • Co-worker/colleague
  • Long-standing customer
  • Supplier or contractor
  • Faith leader (church, mosque, etc.)
  • Member of trade associations

You have to be very careful with who you put down as your references because not everyone who knows you well or who would like to vouch for you may be able to do so effectively and professionally.

Your referees should be:

  • Clear and well-spoken;
  • Friendly and engaging;
  • Authoritative and professional.

Only select referees who will aid and not hamper your chances of securing a job.

Employers want to get an independent opinion on your character, abilities and experience from your reference, something which can only be provided by someone who knows you well. Ideally, your referees should know you for at least a year before you list them on your CV – the longer the more credible.

The answer is: no, you can’t use a friend or family member as a reference. The purpose of providing references is for the employer to get a professional and unbiased opinion about you and your abilities. Having friends or family members as your references creates a “conflict of interest” (bias) and defeat the whole purpose of trying to get an honest and unbiased view from an independent source.

Warning: Employers always try to establish first who the referee is before they take up a reference. Don’t be tempted to ask a friend to take on a fictitious role and speak highly of you to the employer; you will get caught!

  • Family members
  • Neighbours (even if they have known you for twenty years!)
  • People you don’t know
  • People who don’t know you well

Exception: This rule does not apply if you’re working in a family-owned business and your boss just happens to be a family member, in which case it’s fine to list them as a reference.

Employers expect your professional reference to be your current or former manager/employer. If this is not possible, for whatever reason, you may use another person in the same organisation with a similar level of seniority such as a co-worker, colleague or even a longstanding client who knows you well.

The way you approach a potential referee depends on the relationship that you have with them and whether they are aware that you are applying for a job or not.

If your line manager sits next to you and you chat regularly together, an informal verbal request will be fine. If the common communication method between you is via email, however, you should send an email instead with a copy of your CV attached.

To ask a co-worker, say something like:

“John, I’m currently looking for a job. Do you feel you know me well enough to be my reference to comment on my skills and abilities?”

Most people will be happy to help you.

Yes, you should always ask permission before using someone as your reference and never assume that they can/will provide you with a reference. The last thing you would want to have is a referee who is unhappy with you for not asking their permission before sharing their personal details with random employers!

Imagine what would happen to your chances of a job offer if an employer phones them up and they give any of the following responses…

  • “He gave MY name as a reference?”
  • “I haven’t spoken to him for years…”
  • “(long pause followed by) Oh yes, I do remember her.”

That’s why it’s essential that you ask permission before putting people down as your references and also brief them on your current career ambitions so that they are aware and can give appropriate – and positive – responses about you.

Note: You can use various headings to label this section; ‘References’, ‘Referees’, ‘Supporting references’ or ‘Professional references’ are all acceptable.

Guidelines for listing references on a CV:

  • Identify two people who know you well and can vouch for you to the employer. One of them has to be your current or former employer. If you’re applying for your first job, you can list your tutor from school, college or university.
  • Ask your referees’ permission before sharing their personal details; it’s courteous and will also make them aware that they might receive a phone call about you.
  • Start by writing the referee’s prefix (Mr, Ms, Dr, etc.)
  • Write their name (first name and surname are sufficient, no middle names).
  • Mention their official job title or position, such as “Managing Director”.
  • State the company or organisation they work for.
  • Write their full address including postcode.
  • List their contact telephone number. Do not disclose their personal telephone number; mention their work telephone number instead.
  • Include their email address (double-check it’s valid and up-to-date).
  • State your relationship to them (optional).

Strictly speaking, even this is not necessary because it is implied that you have references available when you apply for a job. Sinead English, a career consultant and author, writes in CV & Interview 101: How to apply and interview for jobs (pg.43) : “There is no need to put “referees available on request” on the CV. It is a waste of space – employers know they can get them from you if they want them.”

However, it is usually preferred to include this phrase as it only takes up one line, is common practice and rounds off your CV nicely.

Just remember to never take out or remove something important or fundamental for the inclusion of adding “references are available upon request” to your CV!

Never attach written testimonials or reference letters – ‘To whom it may concern’ – to your CV. Employers often view them to be either fake, composed by the candidates themselves or close friends or consist of disingenuous praise by the referee. A referee is not likely to give the candidate a critical testimonial letter to pass on to employers!

It will also make you seem desperate (which is never a good thing in recruitment).

What makes this example bad?

  • The applicant hasn’t included all the required details of the referee so it’s not clear exactly who the referee is or what they do!
  • They haven’t stated the referee’s full name or job title .
  • The address is long-winded and badly presented .
  • This section contains the details of just one reference instead of two.
  • Stay in touch – Keep your references up to date with your career progress, achievements, aspirations and plans. Many applicants have reportedly lost out on job offers because their referees were unaware of the applicant’s complete employment history. Don’t lose the chance of getting a job on lack of communication with your referees! A word of warning: Don’t become a pest and constantly bother your referee, occasional conversations are fine when absolutely necessary. Occasionally send them an up-to-date copy of your CV.
  • Always be prepared to give references – Have the details of your references ready at all times. You may not want to include them on your CV but you must ensure that you have the details of your two referees that you can call at short notice to provide references for you. Employers will not wait for you to find two suitable people who can vouch for you. You need to have their up-to-date details ready at all times once you have started applying for jobs.
  • Double-check your referees’ details – Make sure your referees’ details are correct and up to date, especially their telephone numbers and email addresses. Employers will choose one or both of these methods to contact your referees. Most references are taken up over the phone and given off the record.
  • Manage your references – Create a second document alongside your CV with the names and contact details of all your potential references. Make sure they are up to date and only use relevant contacts to be your reference depending on the type of job you’re applying for, etc.
  • Thank your referees – When your job hunt is finished, it is courteous to contact your referees and thank them for your helping you. Furthermore, you never know when you may need them again!

References are people who know you well and who can talk about your work experience, skills, work habits and characteristics to prospective employers when applying for a job. Employers use this information to determine your overall employability prospects and suitability for the job.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
