“what does being a working student mean to me”: a reflection on my experiences.

By: Sara Sanabria

My name is Sara Sanabria and for the past two years I have been a research assistant for the Hard-Working Student study. As mentioned in the ‘About’ page, the study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the experiences of working students. As we ask students tough questions regarding balancing work and studies, I too have had an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a working student. And while being a working student means very different things to different people, I decided to end my time with the study by sharing some insights on what being a working student means to me.

One of the things I realized is that working while studying means having a place to escape from school and life’s stresses. By having a time and a place to sit down and focus on something completely unrelated to my classes, I can take a mental and emotional break from constantly thinking about assignments and papers. In the long run it helps me to avoid burn out and to stay passionate about what I am studying.

Another thing I have come to realize about being a working student, is that many working students see their work as temporary. This was definitely the case for me when I worked in the retail and service industry. I saw my job as something I did on the side for money, and I always went into a job knowing that I would eventually leave it. Consequently, I usually took on a ‘put your head down and work hard’ mentality and accepted mistreatment or poor working conditions because I figured, “what’s the point in demanding better from my employer if I’ll be gone in a few months?” So, I accepted conditions that led to mild skin burns, long hours with no breaks, having my hours cut with little notice, and more. During my time with the HWS study, we organized a ‘Rights at Work’ event, and to my surprise, I discovered that there are support systems for working students such as worker’s unions and legal protections. However, I also learned that working students typically do not participate in unions because again, a lot of us see our term-time work as temporary. In the future I hope to be more assertive and to stand up for safe and fair working conditions for myself and my co-workers.

Lastly, as I head into law school and start a new job search in a new city, I reflect on how working while studying means having a sense of financial stability and how important it is for me to have a source of income while I study. I am privileged to have some support from my parents and the school, but even so, I know that without working it will be difficult to make ends meet. I know this is a reality for many students and so I share a sense of solidarity with others who are working hard to make a brighter future themselves. I am thankful to have been part of this study as I am certain it will go on to inform future policy and hopefully make a positive impact for other hard-working students.

"Ten to fifteen hours per week, on campus.”

This is the typical response from faculty members and administrators who are asked how much undergraduate students should work at paying jobs while attending college. Available research supports this recommendation. Quantitative studies consistently show that retention rates are higher for students who work a modest number of hours per week (ten to fifteen) than they are for students who do not work at all or those who work more than fifteen hours per week. Research also shows increased academic success for students working on rather than off campus.

Unfortunately, this simple recommendation is no longer feasible or realistic for the typical undergraduate. Most college students are now not only employed but also working a substantial number of hours, a fact not widely understood or discussed by faculty members and policy makers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2007 nearly half (45 percent) of “traditional” undergraduates—that is, students between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four attending college full time—worked while enrolled. About 80 percent of traditional-age undergraduates attending college part time worked while enrolled. (See figures 1 and 2 .) The share of full-time, traditional-age undergraduates working fewer than twenty hours per week has declined during the past decade (to about 15 percent in 2007), while the number working between twenty and thirty-four hours per week has increased (to about 21 percent in 2007). Today nearly one in ten (8 percent) full-time, traditional-age undergraduates is employed at least thirty-five hours per week. Contrary to the common belief that community college students are more likely to be employed than students at four-year institutions, the distribution of undergraduates by the number of hours worked is similar at public two-year, public four-year, and private four-year institutions, after controlling for differences in attendance status.

Working is now a fundamental responsibility for many undergraduates. But understanding how employment affects students’ educational experiences is complicated by why students work. Many students must work to pay the costs of attending college. As College Board policy analyst Sandy Baum argues in a 2010 collection of essays I edited, Understanding the Working College Student: New Research and Its Implications for Policy and Practice , while some of these students are awarded “work” as part of their financial aid package, other students either do not receive work-study funding or find such awards insufficient to cover the costs of attendance. Some traditional-age students may use employment as a way to explore career options or earn spending money. For other students, particularly adult students, work is a part of their identity, as Carol Kasworm, a professor of adult education at North Carolina State University, and other contributors to Understanding the Working College Student point out. Regardless of the reason for working, trying to meet the multiple and sometimes conflicting simultaneous demands of the roles of student, employee, parent, and so on often creates high levels of stress and anxiety, making it less likely that students will complete their degrees.

Reconceptualizing Work

Although students who work have an obligation to fulfill their academic responsibilities, colleges and universities also have a responsibility to ensure that all students—including those who work—can be successful.

One obvious approach is for colleges and universities to reduce students’ financial need to work by reducing the rate of tuition growth and increasing need-based grants. Colleges and universities can also reduce the prevalence and intensity of employment through financial aid counseling that informs students of both the consequences of working and alternative mechanisms of paying for college. Nonetheless, given the recent economic recession (and its implications for tuition, financial aid, and students’ financial resources) as well as the centrality of jobs to students’ identities, many will likely continue to work substantial numbers of hours.

Even on campuses where relatively few students work and those who do work relatively few hours and primarily on rather than off campus, the applicable research suggests that reconceptualizing “work” and its role in students’ learning and engagement could be beneficial. Often professors and administrators believe that employment pulls students’ attention away from their academic studies; they define any time spent in paid employment as necessarily reducing the amount of time available for learning. Qualitative data indicate that this time trade-off is real for many working students. But what if working were considered not as detracting from education but as promoting student learning? From a human-capital perspective, both employment (especially when defined as on-the-job training) and formal education build students’ human capital. Given this theoretical perspective as well as the reality of student employment, colleges and universities should consider ways to transform employment into an experience that can enhance students’ intellectual development.

Understanding the Working College Student offers several strategies for transforming the role of employment in students’ educational experiences. One potential strategy is to develop connections between employment and learning by incorporating into coursework the knowledge gained through work-based experiences. Another strategy is to recognize formally the contribution of workplace experiences to student learning by awarding course credit for relevant employment experiences. Several organizations offer mechanisms for assessing and awarding course credit for work and other prior experiences—for example, the College Board’s College-Level Examination Program and the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service.

Supporting Working Students

Colleges and universities can also create a supportive campus culture for working students. To do so, faculty members and administrators must understand the learning and support needs of working students. While the national data paint a picture of student employment “on average,” individual colleges and universities must also understand the patterns of employment—and the implications of these patterns—on their own campuses. Colleges and universities must educate both professors and administrators about the prevalence of student employment and how to connect students’ workplace and academic experiences and then change institutional policies, practices, and structures to promote such connections. In particular, higher education institutions, especially those with large proportions of students working large numbers of hours, should consider whether their structures are oriented toward meeting only the needs of “traditional” students—that is, students enrolled full time and working ten to fifteen hours per week in on-campus positions.

Creating an institutional culture that promotes the success of working students will require a campuswide effort that involves the faculty and administration. Colleges and universities should encourage, reward, and support faculty members who adapt their instructional practices to promote the educational success of working students. In Understanding the Working College Student, Paul Umbach, associate professor of higher education at North Carolina State University, and his co-authors demonstrate the educational benefits to working students when their instructors encourage cooperative learning, set high expectations for student achievement, and create assignments that require students to demonstrate deep learning. A campus teaching center may also support faculty efforts to help working students.

Giving students the opportunity for meaningful one-on-one interactions with their professors is also critical to fostering a supportive campus culture, and such interactions may be particularly beneficial to working students. For example, Marvin Titus, assistant professor of higher education at the University of Maryland College Park, uses quantitative analyses of data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students survey to show that the likelihood of completing a bachelor’s degree within six years increases with the frequency of student-faculty discussions in the first year of college, even after taking into account other variables. Mary Ziskin, Vasti Torres, Don Hossler, and Jacob Gross, researchers with the Project on Academic Success at Indiana University, use qualitative analyses to identify examples where instructors do not offer necessary assistance, either because they do not realize the challenges facing working students or because they do not believe they are obligated to offer any additional assistance.

Ziskin and colleagues also conclude that the academic success of many adult students may be jeopardized by their belief that their jobs, family commitments, and age make them “out of place” on campus. This problem can be remedied. Through one-on-one interactions, professors and administrators can promote adult working students’ sense of belonging and validate their presence on campus, thus encouraging their academic success.

Colleges and universities should also consider other ways to adapt the delivery of instruction as well as academic and social support services to the needs of working students. John Levin, professor of education at the University of California, Riverside, and his colleagues suggest that by adapting these structures, institutions not only allow working students to become actively engaged on campus but also promote students’ self-confidence and motivation to succeed in college.

Fostering Student Success

The research collected in Understanding the Working College Student provides numerous suggestions for how to help working students succeed in college. These include offering courses in the evenings, on weekends, and in distance education formats; establishing course schedules in advance; offering students access to academic advising and other support services at night and on weekends; offering online course registration and academic advising; providing child-care options; and providing space for students to study between work and school. Colleges and universities can also help working students connect their employment and educational experiences through career counseling and occupational placement.

Many undergraduate students struggle to meet the multiple demands of work, family, and school roles. Colleges and universities have an obligation to ensure that all students—including working students—can succeed on their campuses. Reframing work as potentially enhancing student learning and ensuring that prevailing institutional policies, practices, and structures recognize that most undergraduates will have jobs while enrolled are important steps in the right direction.

7 Powerful Lessons I’ve Learned as a Working Student

Being a working student is hard. On top of your working week you have to make time to sit at your desk and study, even when you want to relax or spend time with friends and family. In this blog post I’m going to share with you seven lessons I’ve learned as a working student, and tips for how you can embody these lessons and make your life A LOT easier.

Start Your Essay

1. You have more time than you think. This IS possible

Before I started studying, when my life consisted of working full time and seeing friends and family, I thought I was busy. It wasn’t until I hit that enrol button and took a giant leap into working student life that I realised how much time spare time I DID have. Now I’m not advocating for anyone to work and study every waking hour. But I was surprised to learn that by tweaking my schedule and setting studying as a priority, I COULD fit university into my life.

I used to spend a lot more time watching TV. I would go to the cinema twice a week, go out with friends and family multiple times, and spend a lot of time faffing about at home rather than cook/clean/do laundry…etc.

Now I’ve pulled back on that stuff. I still see friends and family, but I don’t socialise every day. I still watch TV, but normally it’s one episode of a Netflix show I’m currently into. (And I have a lovely, untidy house and a dwindling knicker supply most weeks!)

Maybe you’re reading this and you’re about to become a working student, or maybe you haven’t made that leap yet.

Yes, being a working student is difficult. But it IS possible.

Every week I have moments where I feel overwhelmed. But every week (mostly) I still get my work done, and I still have a life.

2. Lean on your support network

As a working student, life can get pretty crazy. Especially around due dates and even more so when this coincides with a busy work and personal schedule. I spent a lot of time at the beginning of my degree feeling like I had to be Wonder Woman. That because I had chosen to do this I had to do it all by myself and not moan at all.

Well I’m glad I’ve learned this is a load of codswallop. Now I lean on everyone, I’m barely ever completely vertical anymore *laughs at own joke* .

How can you lean on your support network as a working student?

  • Share your wins with them
  • Tell them your goals for the day/week and ask them to check up on you *hello accountability*
  • Ask if you can rant to them about your crazy schedule, difficult essay question…etc. It really helps to get it all out
  • See if anyone you live with can pick up the slack and help you with cooking, cleaning, childcare…etc. when things get busy.

Remember, it's not a bad thing to ask for help. It's a sign of courage and healthy, strong relationships when we support each other.

3. There will be people who don’t get it

There will be people in your social circle who are proud of you and think you are incredible for being a working student, even if they’re not sure they could do it. These are great people.

But you may also come across those who don’t agree with what you’re doing, who think you’re mad to study while working. I’ve had a work colleague tell me that I should just learn to be content with where I am in life, like ambition is a dirty word. I have also experienced people dismissing studying while working by saying ‘Oh, I wish I had the money/time/luxury to do what you’re doing but I am too busy/have a family…etc.’ I’ve even had a family friend ask me how my boyfriend feels about being abandoned while I study!

Most working students I know have come across these types of people and comments. If you have or do, ignore them.

Working while studying is hard at times, and it is a massive investment in time, energy and money. But we’re doing it for a reason. To better ourselves. To educate ourselves at the same time as working so we can earn and learn simultaneously. Comments like this used to rattle me, but now I’ve learned to ignore them and stay in my own lane. I now understand that I’m happy with my decision and I'm in no need of external validation…and that’s enough for me.

4. You can everything you want in life, but just not all at once

I am a firm believer that we can all have everything we want in life, if we choose it and work for it. But it took me years of being a working student to realise that I couldn’t have it all at once. I beat myself up over and over that I couldn’t excel in my work and studies, get ripped in the gym, cook delicious meals every night, see my friends and family a lot, spend quality time with my boyfriend, have a beautiful home, cultivate a vegetable garden and learn how to embroider…ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

I wish someone had told me this before I started studying so I could stop the voice in my head telling me that I’m not enough. It’s hard to feel like you’re failing in any area of your life, but being a working student is tough, and it takes up a lot of your time and brain space.

I think our priorities cycle. So some months our studying is a little easier and we can make more time for other things. But when studying ramps up again it’s OK to pull time and energy from these areas.

I still have times where I feel crappy that I can’t achieve everything right now, but then I remember that life isn’t a race. I will get to things when I get to them. And I’m OK with that.

5. Appreciate how far you’ve come

As a working student, time often feels like it’s slipping away, like you’re chasing after deadlines like a boulder down a hill. This pace means you often hit submit on an essay and then jump straight into the reading for the next one. Often, this IS necessary. But I’ve learned that it is so important to take a minute and reflect on your progress and achievements.

At the end of a study session high-five yourself for what you got done. At the end of each week clap yourself on the back for everything you’ve ticked off. At the end of each module or year look back and congratulate yourself on how far you’ve come – how much you’ve learned, the skills you’ve developed, where your grades have increased.

Regularly looking back will help you move forward with more confidence and motivation.

6. You can’t bury your head in the sand

As a working student, life is busy, and there’s a lot less slack in your schedule. I’ve experienced the pain of burying my head in the sand and not studying for a week, only to then be faced with having to find a spare 15 hours the next week, on top of my normal studying, so I could catch up. You need to be clear what’s coming up so you can prepare for it and make sure you don’t fall behind.

At the beginning of each module I print out the syllabus. The Open University gives you a week-by-week view of everything you need to complete. If your university doesn’t do this then spend some time creating this list yourself, using your tutorial and assessment dates to guide you. This way you can very quickly see whether you’re on track and take action to remedy it if you’re not.

7. Sometimes you’ve gotta rain check the fun

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a working student is that you have to change your perspective on fun and instant gratification. Before studying, as long as I had the money, I could agree to any invitation for dinner, drinks, or a trip away. If I wanted to come home from work and go straight to bed OR binge-watch Friends I could with little negative effect for ‘ future Chloe’ . But once I became a working student, ‘future Chloe’ got pretty peeved when I sacked off studying for fun instead. Because that meant ‘future Chloe’ had to pull late nights to catch up.

*Ok I’ll stop referring to myself in the third person now*

About a year into my degree I came across the idea that ‘present frustration is worth it for future attainment’ . This means that making myself study in the present, even if I would rather go to a BBQ, is worth it now for the degree and opportunities I’ll gain in the future.

I think every working student needs to understand and embody this concept if they want to succeed with the least pain possible. Once I accepted that I couldn’t have fun ALL the time it became easier to make studying a priority. I still make time for fun, yes. But I also respect the decision I made to study which means sometimes studying often has to come first. This idea changed everything for my studying and is the key reason behind my achievements.

Working While Studying: Pros and Cons Essay

Modern students seek financial independence and opportunities to receive practical skills from an early age. Nowadays more than 57% of students worldwide work part-time to cover their living and tuition costs as well as to satisfy some higher personal demands (Richmond par.1).

Working while studying helps students to realize their potential and develop crucial professional skills. Only in the working environment, it is possible to gain invaluable practical experience and knowledge. Apart from financial rewards, students receive necessary team-working, organizational, planning, time-management, leadership, and decision-making skills. They learn how to deal with real situations, take full responsibility for their actions, and efficiently interact with their colleagues.

A person who is engaged in a busy working environment also develops interpersonal, communicational, and conflict handling skills (Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills 79). Moreover, employers are more favorable to those who already have working experience after graduation, especially if to speak about relatively prestigious positions (Wignall 21).

At the same time, working while studying entails many challenges. A student will face pressure and need to achieve the balance between work and studying process. The quality of his or her studies might deteriorate significantly, as well as social life. A working person faces the risk of nervousness and tiredness, which may affect his or her ability to retain and process information at the University. In some cases, over-exhaustion may even lead to health problems (Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills 78).

Thus, it is up to the student to decide whether he or she can combine studies with working. Working while studying might be exhausting and stressful, but it brings significant benefits to young people and facilitates their finding in the modern economically unstable world.

The Untold Stories of Working Students: Failures, Successes, and Prospects

Glenda C. Magno, Eugenio S. Magno Faculty of Bataan Peninsula State University, San Ramon, Dinalupihan, Bataan, Philippines

IJRISS Call for paper

Abstract: Quality education is the prime dream of every student. However, for the poor and underprivileged students, the burden of acquiring a college degree required a lot of perseverance and hardship. Therefore, this study revealed the experiences of working students’ failures, successes, and prospects. It applied a phenomenological qualitative research design where the twenty (20) identified working students, their select classmates, and teachers served as the population of the study. The data gathered through an in-depth- one-on-one interview with the participants and analyzed with the use of the MAXQDA software. The study revealed the situation of working students is really tough and very stressful. They have difficulty complying with school requirements. The advantages of being a working student help them learn how to prioritize and manage their time and boost their self-confidence. The disadvantages include incurring school tardiness leading to poor academic performance. The strength of working students includes being optimistic and managing setting priorities in life. On the other hand, the weaknesses of having difficulty fixing conflicting schedules and mental exhaustion.

I. INTRODUCTION

Quality education is the prime dream of every Filipino student. This access to education is possible because of the implementation of free tuition and miscellaneous fees in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs). (Montemayor 2018). However, despite of free tuition fee, according to Curambao (2015), not all parents have enough income to send and support their children in school especially in college. As a result, because of poverty, some students need to support themselves by becoming working students. Being a working student may be a responsibility of the many less fortunate but willing young adults and adult individuals. Besides, for the poor and underprivileged students, the burden of acquiring a college degree required a lot of perseverance and hardship. Everyday expenses not covered by the free tuition and miscellaneous fees remain their big problem. To cover their other needs including their responsibilities to their family, students look for part-time or full-time jobs. It is a reality that over the years, working students experience a struggle to balance work and study. The financial crisis is still the primary reason why students take

Essay on Hard Work

500 words essay on  hard work.

Hard work is an essential thing we all need in life. It is impossible to achieve greatness without working hard. In other words, an idle person cannot gain anything if they wish to sit and wait for something else. On the other hand, one who keeps working hard constantly will definitely gain success in life and this is exactly what essay on hard work will elaborate upon.

essay on hard work

Importance of Hard Work

Hard work is important and history has proved it time and again. The great Edison used to work for many hours a day and he dozed off on his laboratory table only with his books as his pillow.

Similarly, the prime minister of India, late Pt. Nehru used to work for 17 hours a day and seven days a week. He did not enjoy any holidays. Our great leader, Mahatma Gandhi worked round the clock to win freedom for our country.

Thus, we see that hard work paid off for all these people. One must be constantly vigil to work hard as it can help you achieve your dreams. As we say, man is born to work. Just like steel, he shines in use and rusts in rest.

When we work hard in life, we can achieve anything and overcome any obstacle. Moreover, we can also lead a better life knowing that we have put in our all and given our best to whatever work we are doing.

Key to Success

Hard work is definitely the key to success. What we earn by sweating our brow gives us greater happiness than something we get by a stroke of luck. As humans, we wish to achieve many things in life.

These things need hard work to be able to come true. Poverty is not the curse but idealness is. When we waste our time, time will also waste us. Hard work can help anyone achieve success. Great people were born in cottages but died in palaces.

Understanding the Concept of Hard Work

Hard work serves as the foundation upon which great achievements are built. Whether it is about academics, career or achieving personal goals, hard work is an essential part of every process. Putting consistent effort into a task or goal until it is completed is truly hard work. It evolves giving one´s complete energy, focus, and perseverance to overcome any obstacles or difficulties that may arise in the path of an individual.

Consider an example of a girl named Priya who dreams of becoming a doctor. She decided to work extremely hard right from an early age. Taking care of her daily routine, keeping attentive in her academics, and spending several more hours revising the concepts and doing practice questions kept her spirits high.

If in any case, she does not score well on tests, instead of getting demotivated, she analyzes where she went wrong and works even harder to improve next time. Her passion and perseverance helped her to gain admission into her dream medical college.

Benefits of Hard Work in Academics

The common sentiment about the value of hard work says that hard work is the foundation of success, whether in real life or in academics. It is the continuous dedication of one to continue the path of improvement, development, excellence, and achievement

Hard work is important not just for academics, but for all aspects of life. When you work hard in your household or your hobbies, you develop a sense of responsibility and discipline, which is going to help you in every part of your life. The sense of responsibility teaches you well how to prioritize your tasks and efficiently manage your time.

Furthermore, hard work helps not only in overcoming obstacles but also in building up a problem-solver and enhances self-confidence. This confidence further initiates other areas of life and boosts up to take on new challenges and responsibilities with determination.

How to Develop a Growth Mindset through Hard Work?

After learning the benefits of hard work, it is important to understand how we can develop a mindset through our hard work. In reality, a growth mindset is the belief in immense effort and practice, and of course, taking pain for your task is the only key to success.

For example, if a student finds a subject difficult at the beginning, keeping a pace of working hard continuously helps in understanding it better. The idea that your capabilities can expand through hard work helps you develop a growth mindset.

Accept the challenges and see every failure as an opportunity. We all make mistakes and they play an important role in learning. The thing is, one should not get discouraged and keep on striving for the best with hard work.

Role of Parents and Schools in Encouraging Hard Work

School plays an important role in encouraging a strong work ethic in students. Teachers can create an environment that encourages as well as rewards students for their hard work. They can design a challenging curriculum that pushes the students to work hard and think critically. At the same time, parents can also build a home environment where the child gets inspired by them.

When the raisers model themselves either through professions or household responsibilities, the children learn the importance of sweat and tears.

Hard work is the key to success in academics, in a career, and in life itself. It helps you to learn better, and achieve your goals and mindset. When individuals put in the effort and see the fruits of their labor, they gain a sense of accomplishment, pride, and self-worth. This positive boost motivates them to continue striving for excellence taking on new challenges and developing important qualities like discipline, determination, and a growth mindset.

When you work hard, you keep on trying despite facing any obstacles or setbacks. Making sacrifices, pushing yourself through challenges, and not giving up easily are the keys to hard work.

Now here comes a question, why is hard work important? Learn that hard work helps you learn things better. If you work hard at your studies, you will understand concepts more deeply. This further leads to better grades and good academic performance.

Moreover, developing the habit of pursuing hard work prepares you for the future. The practice

The practice of toiling hard makes one able to work hard in a job as well as in a professional life. It is appreciated at the workplace and the individual is always promoted and rewarded for their utmost efforts.

Further, hard work helps in building up valuable qualities like discipline, persistence, and determination. These important qualities help in overcoming difficulties in life and boost the confidence to fight back.

The process of professional paper writing includes planning, writing, and revision steps. At first, they assess an assignment and a topic, search information for it, analyze given data and then create a plan to write down their analysis and arguments. This step ensures that the essay is structured and has information on the subject matter and a developed thesis statement.

The art of writing requires students to articulate their thesis statement in the introduction part, and support it with evidence in the body while concluding by summarizing it up. In this stage, one has to present evidence or proof that supports their thesis through checked data, logical reasoning, or persuasive language.

To avoid delays, give the writer all the information and materials needed for the essay promptly after placing an order with such a limited deadline.

How much will my essay cost?

There are many factors that affect the price for each order. These include:

Academic Level: Higher levels like master’s or doctorate programs require more research, time, and effort as compared to undergraduate papers.

Deadline: Short deadlines mean higher prices. Since it is urgent work, writers need to postpone other orders and have more experience and knowledge to create papers quicker.

Length: The number of words in an essay also affects its price. Also, keep in mind that complex papers like dissertations need more time to be finished. If you need a dissertation in 3 hours, the service will have to refuse.

So, you need to be attentive when you ask someone to write an essay. Ordering your essay ahead is the best approach to securing its price and quality. As a result, you will have higher grades and concentrate on doing vital tasks rather than wasting precious time writing papers on your own.

About 1 in 5 U.S. teens who’ve heard of ChatGPT have used it for schoolwork

(Maskot/Getty Images)

Roughly one-in-five teenagers who have heard of ChatGPT say they have used it to help them do their schoolwork, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. With a majority of teens having heard of ChatGPT, that amounts to 13% of all U.S. teens who have used the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their schoolwork.

A bar chart showing that, among teens who know of ChatGPT, 19% say they’ve used it for schoolwork.

Teens in higher grade levels are particularly likely to have used the chatbot to help them with schoolwork. About one-quarter of 11th and 12th graders who have heard of ChatGPT say they have done this. This share drops to 17% among 9th and 10th graders and 12% among 7th and 8th graders.

There is no significant difference between teen boys and girls who have used ChatGPT in this way.

The introduction of ChatGPT last year has led to much discussion about its role in schools , especially whether schools should integrate the new technology into the classroom or ban it .

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand American teens’ use and understanding of ChatGPT in the school setting.

The Center conducted an online survey of 1,453 U.S. teens from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, via Ipsos. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its KnowledgePanel . The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.

This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.

Here are the  questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and its  methodology .

Teens’ awareness of ChatGPT

Overall, two-thirds of U.S. teens say they have heard of ChatGPT, including 23% who have heard a lot about it. But awareness varies by race and ethnicity, as well as by household income:

  • 72% of White teens say they’ve heard at least a little about ChatGPT, compared with 63% of Hispanic teens and 56% of Black teens.
  • 75% of teens living in households that make $75,000 or more annually have heard of ChatGPT. Much smaller shares in households with incomes between $30,000 and $74,999 (58%) and less than $30,000 (41%) say the same.

Teens who are more aware of ChatGPT are more likely to use it for schoolwork. Roughly a third of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT (36%) have used it for schoolwork, far higher than the 10% among those who have heard a little about it.

When do teens think it’s OK for students to use ChatGPT?

For teens, whether it is – or is not – acceptable for students to use ChatGPT depends on what it is being used for.

There is a fair amount of support for using the chatbot to explore a topic. Roughly seven-in-ten teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use when they are researching something new, while 13% say it is not acceptable.

A diverging bar chart showing that many teens say it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT for research; few say it’s OK to use it for writing essays.

However, there is much less support for using ChatGPT to do the work itself. Just one-in-five teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to write essays, while 57% say it is not acceptable. And 39% say it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT to solve math problems, while a similar share of teens (36%) say it’s not acceptable.

Some teens are uncertain about whether it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT for these tasks. Between 18% and 24% say they aren’t sure whether these are acceptable use cases for ChatGPT.

Those who have heard a lot about ChatGPT are more likely than those who have only heard a little about it to say it’s acceptable to use the chatbot to research topics, solve math problems and write essays. For instance, 54% of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to solve math problems, compared with 32% among those who have heard a little about it.

Honors Contract

Complete an honors contract, general information.

When you enter into an Honors Contract with a faculty member, you are agreeing to engage in work clearly beyond what is required for a regular undergraduate course. Simply increasing the quantity of coursework does not constitute an Honors Contract project. Projects can include—but are not limited to—the following examples:

  • Completing an independent project that employs research methods taught in the course
  • Writing a research paper that expands upon a topic covered in the course
  • Producing teaching materials, such as creating a test, new handouts, or PowerPoint presentation for a course
  • Researching a topic and teaching a class session to share your findings
  • Designing and completing a special project, performance, or product

Students who entered the Honors College during or after fall 2022 should plan to add their honors project and reflection to their ePortfolio. More information about the ePortfolio requirement will be shared in HON-H 200.

Information for students

Please complete the following items prior to submitting the application form:

  • See examples of Honors Contracts on the Honors College Canvas.
  • Project title, project description, and details (page or presentation length, for example), and weekly timeline to completion. You will need to submit these pieces of information on the contract proposal form.
  • How your project might fulfill the expectations of an engaging experience such as research, service learning, international study, or other opportunities to apply classroom learning.
  • How your project might contribute to the IUPUI and Honors College learning goals such as developing your skills as a problem solver, communicator, innovator, or community contributor.
  • After you click to submit your Honors contract proposal, your professor will receive a request to approve your project to indicate they agree to work with you. Both of these steps must be completed by the deadline.

Toward the end of the semester, you will submit your completed project to your instructor for evaluation. Projects are not submitted to the Honors College.

To receive Honors credit, you must receive a grade of B or better in the class. While the course may count toward your degree if you receive a grade lower than B, it will not count toward the Honors notation.

Information for faculty

The Honors Contract is not a substitute for regular work. To receive Honors credit, the student must complete all regular coursework as well as the Honors contract and receive at least a B (not a B-) overall in the class.

Honors contracts must be completed via the online form, submitted, and approved by faculty members.  You should receive an email directing you to approve the student's Honors Contract proposal.

Honors College staff will review all contracts and notify each student of approval or the need for revision. You are responsible for determining the criteria for evaluating the student's honors contract work.

You will assign   one   grade at the end of the semester which will serve as both the Honors project grade and the grade for the course. You will determine the weight of the Honors project in calculating the final grade.

No instructor or department is required to accept Honors Contracts. Departments may choose to set up specific guidelines for all students with Honors Contracts within the department. If such policies are established, please inform the Honors College Office.

For more information, please contact Lisa Ruch .

Example: Proposal and timeline

For my Honors contract in P105: Giving and Volunteering in America, I will conduct a philanthropic service-learning project. For this project, I will gather, inform, and lead a group of IUPUI student volunteers in the upcoming Walk to Defeat ALS. This event is run by The ALS Association to help raise funds to allow local chapters to sustain care services and support research. In conjunction with organizing the volunteers, I will organize a walk team. Goals for this project include: acquiring at least 20 volunteers, a 10 person walk team, and raising at least $500 to be donated to the ALS Association. To ensure this is a successful event and service opportunity, I will have an open dialogue with the Indiana ALS chapter. This includes making several trips to their office for sit down meetings and phone calls to ensure I am following their guidelines as I am the face of their organization at IUPUI. I will also be keeping a detailed journal of my daily activities as they relate to the process of setting up and running the philanthropic service-learning project and will write a final reflection of four pages drawing on concepts and material from the course.

September 2:  Formalize honors contract September 6:  Communicate with ALS Association September 9:  Design marketing materials including flyers, email communication, social media, and a marketing plan September 12:  Hold an informational meeting September 13-19:  Conduct additional recruitment September 13-26:  Fundraise with the walk team September 27:  Day of event September 29:  Thank and recognize volunteers October 20:  Submit final reflection paper. The entire Honors Project will be worth 150 points of 18% of the final course grade.

How to Do Hanging Indent in Word for Your Essay? [For Students]

Referencing can be a really dreadful task, especially when you're required to follow specific formatting styles like APA, MLA, or Chicago. These styles often demand hanging indents for organizing the bibliography page, and getting them right can be a challenge. In this article, we'll show you how to add hanging indents in Microsoft Word, making it easier for students to format their references correctly.

Hanging Indents in APA, MLA and Chicago Style

When crafting essays in some of the most widely used academic styles, like APA, MLA, and Chicago, proper formatting is key. One essential element for a well-organized bibliography in all three of these academic styles is the hanging indent .

A hanging indent is a specific text formatting technique where the first line of a paragraph remains flush with the left margin, while all subsequent lines are indented a designated amount. In the context of bibliographies, this creates a visually distinct presentation for each source.

The first line of each citation (typically the author's name) starts at the left margin, while subsequent lines (publication details, title, etc.) are indented by half an inch.

Similar to APA, the first line (usually the title of the work) stands out at the left margin, and subsequent lines containing author information and publication details are indented by half an inch.

The first line of each reference (often the author's name) remains flush with the left margin, while the following lines with publication details are indented slightly (specific indentation amount may vary depending on the reference type).

To ensure accessibility across various devices, including mobile, Windows, and Mac, I'll be using WPS Office for this demonstration. I've found WPS Office to be an incredibly user-friendly office suite, and the fact that it's available for free makes it even more appealing, especially for students. By following along with the steps using WPS Office, you can avoid any potential confusion and seamlessly navigate through the demo.

WPS Office is also compatible with all Word document versions and offers the convenience of converting your papers to PDF without losing formatting, making it a versatile and reliable choice for academic and professional tasks alike.

How to Do Hanging Indent Quickly in Word for Your Essay

Working on essays and formatting them according to the required academic style is crucial because grades depend on it. Moreover, many academic styles require hanging indents in references, so learning how to create hanging indents in Word can be very useful and rewarding!

Since hanging indent is a feature that is not readily visible in the interface, it can be a bit challenging to find while formatting citations in Word. Let's dive right in and explore two different methods to add hanging indents in Word using WPS Office, which can be extremely helpful for students in the long run.

Using Paragraph Option

Let's see how we can add a hanging indent in Word using the paragraph options.

Step 1 : Let's open the document in WPS Office where we need to do the formatting.

Step 2 : Select the text using your mouse on which you want to apply hanging indent formatting.

Step 3 : Right-click to open the context menu, and then click on "Paragraph" to access the paragraph options.

Step 4 : Now, in the Indentation section, navigate to the "Special" field and select "Hanging" from the options.

Step 5 : Ensure that the indent is set to "0.5" in the "By" field. Pay attention to the unit of measurement next to the "By" field and make sure it is set to "inch".

Step 6 : Once the indentation settings have been adjusted, click on OK.

Using the Ruler

Another method that involves using the ruler to add a hanging indent is a rather interactive approach. Let's explore the steps to add a hanging indent using the ruler.

Step 1 : Select the text on WPS Office that you want to format.

Step 2 : After selecting the text, go to the "View" tab in the ribbon menu and ensure that the "Ruler" option is checked to display the ruler.

Step 3 : Now, on the ruler, drag the bottom triangle to add the hanging indent. Ensure that you move the ruler by just 0.5 inches to apply the formatting according to the academic style.

FAQs About Hanging Indents in Word

Q1. where is hanging indent in word on mac.

Hanging indent is present in the paragraph options on Mac. Simply click on the "Format" menu, then choose "Paragraph," and you'll find it there.

Q2. Why is my hanging indent not working?

Possible Reasons for Hanging Indent Issue:

Hard or soft returns after each line : This disrupts the natural flow of the text, causing the hanging indent to apply to the entire text instead of just the selected part. Remove any hard or soft returns after each line to overcome this issue. Lines should wrap naturally without any inserted returns to ensure the hanging indent works properly.

Incorrect application of the hanging indent : Incorrectly following the steps to apply the hanging indent can lead to the entire text being indented instead of just the desired portion. Follow these steps carefully to ensure that you add the indent correctly:

Step 1 : Navigate to the Format menu.

Step 2 : Choose "Align & Indent" followed by "Indent options".

Step 3 : Within the Indent options, select "Special".

Step 4 : Click on the arrows in the Special menu and choose "Hanging".

Step 5 : Finally, press the "Apply" button.

Q3. Do you need a hanging indent?

Hanging indents make it easier to spot the gaps between different citations and find authors' names in a bibliography. It's important to format your works cited or bibliography correctly. This format enhances readability by visually separating each entry, making it quicker to find author names. It also ensures a neat and organized look, which is essential for maintaining a professional appearance. While hanging indents are standard for styles like Chicago, APA, or MLA, it's always a good idea to check your assignment guidelines to see if this formatting is required before you begin writing.

Spring break.

For many college students it means a trip to the coast, hanging out on a beach. Or to the mountains, enjoying the ski slopes. Or to any other vacation spot, getting away from the school projects, research papers, and prepping for exams.

For some it means work – hard work – but work that’s fun and makes a difference.

Three people ride in the back of a boat

Cadets from The Citadel, a military institution in Charleson, South Carolina, chose to spend their time with the staff at Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge away from classes, campus, and other collegiate commitments.

Working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service team at Waccamaw, nine cadets helped preserve and conserve the landscape both for the wildlife on the refuge and those who visit.

“I like to do volunteer work, but this is my first time working in nature,” said Josiah Conard, a freshman cadet.  “I am grateful for the opportunity to preserve [the refuge].”

Service projects on the refuge included infrastructure improvements, beautification of historical landmarks at Waccamaw and in the community, and natural habitat enhancements.

The students spent a couple of days at Sandy Island Preserve, which is part of the largest protected freshwater island on the East Coast.  Co-managed by the Service and The Nature Conservancy, the preserve is home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and longleaf pine forests, among other rare plants and animals.

Sandy Island is also steeped in cultural and historical significance.  The remote island is the ancestral home for generations of descendants of emancipated people who created a thriving community there during the Reconstruction Period by growing and exporting rice.  The island’s forests were also used for shipbuilding and the turpentine industry.

Service personnel, cadets, volunteers and members of the Sandy Island community family partnered to trim trees, clear brush, spruce up two historical cemeteries, a playground, and the grounds of the original school built on the island --- now used as a library.  In addition, Service volunteers helped erect a weather shelter in one cemetery in the heart of the community where families and friends can pay their respects in the shade, rather than in the South Carolina sun.

“I can’t express how grateful I am,” said Deborah Greggs, a former resident of Sandy Island who remains an active member of the community there.  “They don’t know how much I appreciate them.”

One remote cemetery is a popular pilgrimage for residents and hundreds of family members who travel via boat from the mainland to gather on the island for reunions every other year.  Several of Sandy Islands’ founding fathers are buried there.

“I like helping different communities.  The cemetery is historical grounds.  There are so many unmarked graves of former slaves here,” said Zoey Ellison, a freshman at The Citadel.  “Helping people and taking care of the environment is important to me.”

The Service team guided the students through several wildlife habitat improvement projects as well.  Some cadets helped build a fence around a youth hunting facility, which also doubles as a barrier and protection for food plots for turkeys and deer against wild hogs.  Others helped give wood ducks a boost, complementing their nests with wood chips and installing boxes along the Great Pee Dee River where cavity-nesting migratory birds can safely create nests, protected against predators.

“This refuge is more than 36,000 acres, and much of it is open to public use.  Our small team can’t do what we need to do to manage for the diverse wildlife and all the visitors we get without volunteers.  The Citadel has been extremely helpful to us.  I am impressed with the enthusiasm of the cadets and their work ethic, and I hope they will share these experiences with others, instilling the importance of taking care of our natural resources and helping save it for generations of people and wildlife,” said Craig Sasser, manager of Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge.

Cadets also conducted educational, leadership, and team-building activities while on the refuge.

This marks the third time the Service and The Citadel have partnered to offer students an alternative to traditional spring break activities.  Several of the cadets who spent this school vacation at Waccamaw volunteered on previous trips to the refuge, which celebrates its 25th year in 2023.

The refuge was established on December 1, 1997 to protect and manage diverse habitat within coastal river ecosystems and to provide wildlife-dependent recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography and environmental education. The wetland diversity on the refuge provides important habitat for migratory birds, fish and other wildlife.

Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge consists of wetland habitats ranging from historic, broken and actively managed tidal rice fields, to blackwater and alluvial flood plain forested wetlands of the Waccamaw and Great Pee Dee Rivers. These tidal freshwater wetland ecosystems are some of the most diverse freshwater wetland systems in North America. They not only provide important habitat corridors for wildlife, but they also play a critical role in the filtration and storm water retention for the primary drinking water resource of the greater Grand Strand region.

The Citadel, with its iconic campus located in  Charleston, South Carolina , offers a classic military college education for young men ad women focused on leadership excellence and academic distinction. The approximately 2,300 members of the  South Carolina Corps of Cadets  are not required to serve in the military, but about one-third of each class earn commissions to become officers in every branch of U.S. military service. Citadel alumni have served the nation, their states and their communities as principled leaders since 1842.  The Citadel Graduate College , founded more than 50 years ago, offers dozens of graduate degree, graduate certificate and evening undergraduate programs in the evening or online. Consecutively named Best Public College in the South by U.S. News & World Report for 12 years and No. 1 Best Public College for Veterans in the South for five years.

Editor’s note:  During National Volunteer Week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Southeast Region celebrates the efforts of generous volunteers who contribute to the agency’s mission of working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.  For more information on volunteer opportunities, go to https://www.fws.gov/volunteer-opportunity .
