500+ Words Essay on My Pet Dog

Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Essay on My Pet Dog

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

Furthermore, my siblings and I took on the responsibility of keeping Sasha clean. Every week, we took turns to bathe him and brush him nicely. I remember I even got a bow for him from my pocket money. Sasha loved it and wagged his tail in excitement. Sasha has been with us through thick and thin and we will forever be indebted to him for his loyalty.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

First, share the dog’s history, characteristics, and unique behaviors. Then, search for common dog myths and correct them.

If this sounds like a lot of work, do a 5 paragraph essay instead.

It has been proven that dogs are excellent for human well-being. They make people happy and comfort their owners whenever they’re sad. However, dog ownership is not just rainbows and sunshine.

For this prompt, consider the benefits and drawbacks of adopting a dog. In the conclusion, give your own opinion on whether people should have dogs or not. Add your reasons; this could be the cost, aggressive dog breeds, or allergies.

Christmas Vacation

There are many dog breeds today. Pick the most popular ones and include why they are the ones usually seen, bought, or adopted. Write their characteristics and behaviors to help your readers learn about the similarities and differences between each dog. Use pet articles, scientific research, or other reliable sources to make your essay more credible.

You can also tackle the issue of dog crossbreeding , which can lead to genetic mutations.

Dogs need a place to sleep, training, grooming essentials, and other supplies besides the basics, such as food and water. These additional and continuous expenses hinder others from adopting dogs. Use this prompt to share factors that will help you decide whether to pursue adoption. Then, identify dog essentials and items and offer cheaper alternatives to save money.

The average lifespan of a dog is 10 to 13 years , which is much shorter than humans. This means humans usually outlive their canine companions. In this prompt, you can teach the readers how to calculate the lifespan of their dogs based on size and type. Then, advise the dog owners how they can make their dog’s stay on Earth worth it. For an interesting piece of writing, look for a story of a dog outliving its owner and how it reacted or lived out its remaining days, and include this in your essay.

Many households believe dogs symbolize protection and love. Society also adjusted to accommodate dogs with animal laws and dog parks. Further explain how interwoven dogs and the community are, that they’re now a necessary part of some people’s lives. For example, having a dog can make someone more sociable by setting a play date with other dogs and interacting with the other fur parents.

Use this prompt to share your first dog ownership experience with your readers. First, introduce your dog and how you got it. Next, describe your first dog’s unique qualities and add your unforgettable memories together.  End your essay with the greatest life lesson your dog taught you that you still practice today.

An expository essay is a type of academic writing that is used to explain something or describe it in detail. It's often written in a more academic tone and style.

So how would you write an expository essay about our good companions?

The purpose of an expository essay about dogs is to provide facts and information about the topic. It should be well-researched with reliable sources and organized in a logical way.

For example, when writing about a specific dog breed, you mention information about their behavior, history, and characteristics.

Now that you have some ideas for what to write about, let’s move on to the writing steps.

Steps For Writing an Expository Essay About Dogs

Writing an essay about dogs can be a fun experience – but only if you have clear and structured steps.

Here is a step-by-step guide for writing a good essay about dogs

Step 1 – Choose a Topic

Choosing the right topic for your essay is an important first step. You know your topic should be related to dogs, but that’s not enough to choose a good topic. Here are some tips to help you out:

  • It’s best to pick a topic that isn’t too broad or narrow. For example, you could write about a specific breed of dog, dog training techniques, the history of dogs in art, or the role of dogs in therapy.
  • Moreover, choose a topic that is interesting and unique. This can make your essay stand out and pique the reader's interest.
  • Make sure you have enough information and research material available on the subject. Having access to credible sources and reference materials is essential for supporting your arguments and claims.

Step 2 – Do Research

Researching your topic is an essential step toward making your essay credible. You can use books, online resources, articles, and other materials for reference. Gather facts, statistics, and opinions from reliable sources to back up your essay’s claims.

Moreover, make sure to cite all the sources accurately in your essay.

Step 3 – Write an Outline

Once you are done with research, the next step is to write an expository essay outline . An essay outline helps you organize your thoughts and makes writing easier. It also helps you stay on track and makes sure all the information is in a logical order.

Here is how to make an outline:

Step 4 – Start Writing Your First Draft

Now comes the fun part – writing!

Start with an attention-grabbing essay introduction and provide a brief overview of the topic. For example, you could start by talking about how dogs are one of the most popular pets in the world.

Then go on to explain your points and back them up with evidence from reliable sources. Each paragraph should be focused on only one main point.

In addition, make sure each body paragraph links to the next one through transition words and that they all support your main argument.

Finally, end your essay with a conclusion that neatly wraps up the points you made in the body of your essay.

Step 5 – Proofread and Edit

Proofreading and editing are essential parts of the essay-writing process. Take your time to go over your essay and make sure it’s free from any mistakes. Check the grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.

Also, look for any factual inaccuracies or areas that can be improved upon. Revise and rewrite until you are happy with the final product.

These are the steps for writing a good essay about dogs. With these guidelines in mind, you can write an impressive essay that will get you high grades.

The dog is a mammal, that is, it gives birth to its young ones who are called puppies and breastfeeds them. The scientific name of the dog is Canis Familiaris and it belongs to the family Canidae. Dogs and the modern wolves share a common wolf ancestor and are closely related to each other.

Dogs come in different shapes and sizes and there are many types and breeds of dogs that exist today like German Shepherd, Pomeranian, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Pug, Poodle, Siberian Husky, Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier and Chow Chow. Some dogs are tiny and can fit in the palm of one’s hand while others are huge. Some of them have thick, long fur while others have shiny, short hair. Some have long, floppy ears while others have short, stubby ones. Some dogs are gentle and friendly while some others can be fierce and dangerous.

Dogs have sharp eyes and a heightened sense of smell and hearing. They can hear sounds of extremely high frequencies which are beyond the range of human hearing. Dogs are omnivorous and can eat rice, meat, eggs and some vegetables. In the beginning, dogs were domesticated to serve the hunting-gathering people as hunting dogs and guard dogs. With time, people started to breed dogs for a variety of purposes. Today, dogs serve us as shepherd dogs, guard dogs, police dogs, detection dogs, service dogs and even emotional support dogs.

Many people keep dogs as pets and even love and treat them as family members. Dogs like the company of humans and wag their tails when they are happy. They bark when they sense danger and can bite intruders and attackers to protect themselves and their owners. Because of their loyalty, dogs are also known as “man’s best friend”.

However, there are many people who abuse dogs and abandon them. Many dogs end up in dog shelters, injured, starved and homeless. There are also millions of stray dogs on the streets around the world who lead miserable lives. We need to be kind towards them and all other animals. We should take care of them and stop others from hurting them as well.

Some dog breeders also breed dogs for aesthetics without caring about the animal’s health and well-being. This results in many dogs developing breathing issues, spine issues and many other health problems. One should stop such acts and only breed dogs ethically. Dogs are faithful animals. They love us selflessly and we should love them as well.

I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “ Friends ” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Chandler knows everybody in our family and whenever he sees a new person, he barks at them, but he is sweet and does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent as well and gives us handshakes with his paws. He understands whatever we tell, and on command, he sits and rolls over too. He is an essential part of our family and we all love him very much.

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us.

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

Both cats and dogs make wonderful pets, each offering unique qualities that appeal to different people. Cats are generally more independent animals. Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship. They usually need more attention, exercise, and social interaction.

Dogs are known as the best friends of humans because they bring loyalty, joyous moments, unconditional love and life-teaching lessons. Some of the best dog breeds for domestication are German Shepherd, Siberian Huskey, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Beagle and Boxer.

My Pet Dog Essay

Pets are the closest thing to humans. Humans can choose their pets based on their environment, their level of affection, and their busy life schedule. Pets that are commonly kept include dogs, cats, and birds. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘My Pet Dog’.

  • 100 Words Essay On My Pet Dog

Dogs are the best choice as a pet because they understand their owners very well and support them in whatever condition they are in. I decided to get a dog as a pet after realising my affection for both street dogs and other people's pet dogs. Dogs are regarded as a person's best friend. I was not sure which dog breed to choose, but in the end, I decided on the Pomeranian breed. I went to a pet store to check out the different coloured Pomeranian dogs. I was highly confused but at the end chose an adorable brown coloured Pomeranian. I named him 'Benji', he was only a month old when I took him home.

200 Words Essay On My Pet Dog

500 words essay on my pet dog.

My Pet Dog Essay

Dogs are the only animals who love their owners without any reason. They start trusting their owners completely. On the day when my mother and I were going to purchase my pet dog, I was overcome with excitement. We both have the same love of animals, so I was sure she would be confused once she entered the pet store. She questioned me after entering the store as to why I wanted a dog only as a pet rather than a cat or bird, and I told her that I have a special affection for dogs.

Benefits | Dogs can help their owners with their mental health issues, can teach us new skills, can act as living examples of what their owners have taught them, and, most importantly, need regular exercise, which also helps us to maintain good cardiovascular health.

We discussed which dog to buy for the complete two hours before deciding on a white Persian dog with large black eyes and a short tail. I was staring at my new pet the entire time I was returning home and I named him Pluto. Finally, we ended up happily having a handsome dog that improved our health and mood and we love him dearly.

New Member Of Our Family

I decided, along with my mother, to purchase a puppy from a pet store on December 10, 2022. We went in the evening to finalise the puppy after she gave her permission. At the pet store's corner, I noticed a stunning white pomeranian sitting quietly and observing us. He was sitting with his gorgeous fluffy tail moving from left to right. We looked at many dogs, but this one grabbed my attention. I asked the shop owner if I could hold him in my hands, and he agreed. The dog was so kind that he began to play with me and lick me. After choosing to take him home with me, we proceed to buy his food, treats, leashes, toys, and shampoo.

My dog, Shero, accompanied me around the entire store. He seemed genuinely happy to be with me, which thrilled me. I had some concerns about whether he would be comfortable in the car and whether he would become anxious while driving, but nothing of the sort occurred. Instead, he reacted exactly the opposite of what I imagined. He sat next to me in the car the entire time we were travelling home and was enjoying the scenery. I got the feeling that he perhaps thought that he could now enjoy his life in the outside world.

First Experience At Home

After returning home, he initially felt some fear of unfamiliar objects, smells, and environment, but with time he got attached to everything. He was jumping on the bed, the couch, and playing with the toys we had bought for him. After some time, he began to bark, and as it was my first day with him, I was unaware that he did this when he was hungry. After finishing his meal, he slept for two to three hours. My family and I talked about his trainer while he was asleep so that he might learn new tasks that would make him stronger and more active, both of which are excellent for his health. Your dog can understand what you say better than you think, new study shows

Our dogs understand us better than they’ve been given credit for — and scientists say they have the brain wave evidence to prove it.

By placing electrodes on the heads of 18 pet dogs, researchers found striking evidence that the animals did not merely recognize the patterns of sound that come out of their owners’ mouths , they actually realized that certain words refer to specific objects.

The findings were reported Friday in the journal Current Biology.

“For decades there has been a debate about whether animals are capable of such a level of abstraction,” said study leader Marianna Boros , a neuroscientist and ethologist at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. The experiments with dogs knock down the uniqueness of humans “a little bit.”

A few exceptional dogs have been trained to learn the names of hundreds of objects. Among the most esteemed was Chaser , a border collie from South Carolina who could remember the names of more than 1,000 toys.

Boros wondered whether more dogs understood that words had meanings but just didn’t have a way to show it. Even when dogs succeed in behavioral studies, she said, “you never know exactly what happens in the brain.”

So she took inspiration from researchers who study language processing in humans and got her hands on an electroencephalogram machine. The EEG measures brain waves and can gauge the difference between the neural responses to a word that’s expected and a word that seems to come out of left field.

Arbó, a sighthound outfitted with EEG electrodes, rests with its owner before taking a vocabulary test.

With a little cleanser, some conductive cream and gauze, the researchers connected the EEG electrodes to the heads of 27 dogs. Then the dogs listened to recordings of their owners using the familiar words in simple sentences like, “Luna, here’s the ball.”

After a short pause, the owner appeared behind a window with an object in his or her hand. Sometimes it was the object mentioned in the sentence; sometimes it wasn’t. Either way, the electrodes recorded small voltages from the dogs’ brains as they contemplated what they had heard and seen.

The tests went on for as long as a dog was willing to stay on its mat and participate, Boros said.

“The EEG studies with dogs are quite easy to run,” she said. “They don’t need to do anything. They just lay down.”

The 18 dogs that were able to sit through at least 10 trials were included in the analysis. With all but four of those animals, the EEGs revealed a distinct pattern: The wave signals dipped significantly lower when there was a match between the word and the object than when there wasn’t.

A dog participating in an experiment looks at its owner through a window.

It was reminiscent of the difference seen in EEGs when humans are confronted with a word that seems out of place, such as a request to wash your hands with soap and coffee. Neuroscientists interpret this as a sign that the brain was expecting another word — “water” instead of “coffee” — and had to do some extra work to understand the sentence.

Boros and her colleagues posit that the same thing happens in the brains of dogs: After hearing their owner use the word for an object, they called it up in their mind in anticipation of seeing it. Then, when an object appeared, it was either the thing they expected or something that threw them for a loop. The reason the dogs could tell something was amiss was that they understood the spoken word.

Everybody loves Tripod the three-legged coyote, but High Desert locals say that visitors are spoiling the beast with handouts and causing a dangerous situation.

The gap between hearing the word and seeing the object is key, said Lilla Magyari , a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Stavanger in Norway, who worked on the study.

If a dog heard the word “ball” while looking at a ball in its owner’s hands, it might guess that the two go together because they were present at the same time, she said. But the experiment’s design prevented that from happening. Instead, the dog must have created an accurate mental representation of the spoken word.

The dog was thinking, “I heard the word, now the object needs to come,” Magyari said.

“Ball” was the most common vocabulary word among the dogs in the study. Several had words for “leash,” “phone” and “wallet.” Most had at least one name for a favorite toy, including one pet that understood four distinct words for different toys in the experiment.

Joey sits on a mat before a participating in a word knowledge experiment.

It’s not clear from the study results whether all dogs have the capacity to learn words. The ones that participated in the experiment were volunteered by their owners, who vouched that their pets knew at least five words for objects. (One dog was said to have a vocabulary of 230 nouns.)

Marie Nitzschner spent a decade studying the cognitive abilities and communication skills of dogs at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany. She said she had ever met only one dog that seemed to know words for specific objects. Even so, she said the study makes a strong case that the phenomenon is real.

“It appears to me to be conclusive,” said Nitzschner, who was not involved in the work.

She added that dogs who lack this ability have nothing to worry about “because we still have good communication options . However, if I noticed that my dog had a talent in this direction, I would probably try to encourage this talent.”

Dog lovers are sure to be intrigued by the linguistic capabilities of their best friends. But the researchers see the study as a way to investigate why humans excel at language when other animals don’t.

“It’s kind of a mystery,” Magyari said. “We don’t know why all of a sudden humans were able to use such a complex system.”

By breaking it down into its component parts and studying whether any of them are shared with animals, “we can construct a theory about how language evolved in humans,” she said.

Of all species on Earth, dogs are singular study subjects because they live their entire lives immersed in a world rich with human speech. And unlike with cats, the ancestors of dogs were selected for domestication based on their ability to communicate with humans.

“It’s super-relevant for them,” Boros said.

Dog holding a slipper in mouth

Dogs can understand the meaning of nouns, new research finds

Study confirms our canine companions can grasp more than simple commands – or at least for items they care about

Dogs understand what certain words stand for, according to researchers who monitored the brain activity of willing pooches while they were shown balls, slippers, leashes and other highlights of the domestic canine world.

The finding suggests that the dog brain can reach beyond commands such as “sit” and “fetch”, and the frenzy-inducing “walkies”, to grasp the essence of nouns, or at least those that refer to items the animals care about.

“I think the capacity is there in all dogs,” said Marianna Boros, who helped arrange the experiments at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary. “This changes our understanding of language evolution and our sense of what is uniquely human.”

Scientists have long been fascinated by whether dogs can truly learn the meanings of words and have built up some evidence to back the suspicion. A survey in 2022 found that dog owners believed their furry companions responded to between 15 and 215 words.

More direct evidence for canine cognitive prowess came in 2011 when psychologists in South Carolina reported that after three years of intensive training, a border collie called Chaser had learned the names of more than 1,000 objects , including 800 cloth toys, 116 balls and 26 Frisbees.

However, studies have said little about what is happening in the canine brain when it processes words. To delve into the mystery, Boros and her colleagues invited 18 dog owners to bring their pets to the laboratory along with five objects the animals knew well. These included balls, slippers, Frisbees, rubber toys, leads and other items.

At the lab, the owners were instructed to say words for objects before showing their dog either the correct item or a different one. For example, an owner might say “Look, here’s the ball”, but hold up a Frisbee instead. The experiments were repeated multiple times with matching and non-matching objects.

During the tests, researchers monitored the dogs’ brain activity through non-invasive electroencephalography, or EEG. The traces revealed different patterns of activity when the objects matched or clashed with the words their owner said. The difference in the traces was more pronounced for words that owners believed their dogs knew best.

Similar blips in EEG recordings were seen when humans performed the tests and were interpreted as people understanding a word well enough to form a mental representation that was either confirmed or confounded by the object they were subsequently shown.

Writing in Current Biology , the scientists say the results “provide the first neural evidence for object word knowledge in a non-human animal”.

Boros emphasised she was not claiming dogs understood words as well as humans. It will take further work to understand, for example, whether dogs can generalise in the way humans learn to as infants, and grasp that the word “ball” need not refer to one specific, heavily chewed spongy sphere.

The study raises the question of why, if dogs understand certain nouns, more of them don’t show it. One possibility is that a dog knows what a word refers to but is not bothered about acting on it. “My dog only cares about his ball,” said Boros. “If I bring him another toy, he doesn’t care about it at all.”

Dr Holly Root-Gutteridge, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lincoln who was not involved in the study, called the work “fascinating”.

“It’s particularly interesting because I think it’s unlikely this started during domestication, so it may be widespread throughout mammals,” she said. “That’s highly exciting in itself as it shines new light on language evolution.

“It might be that the dogs don’t really care enough about the game of ‘fetch this particular thing’ to play along with the way we’ve been training and testing them so far. Your dog may understand what you’re saying but choose not to act.”

The Missouri dog that helped popularize the saying ‘man’s best friend’

J OHNSON COUNTY, Mo. – A great many songs , poems , books , and essays have been written about the virtue and simple nobility of the dog. Mark Twain once opined, “The dog is a gentleman,” and wrote that if admission to Heaven were based on merit, “you would stay out and your dog would go in.” But chief among the accolades bestowed upon our furry friends is the distinction of “man’s best friend.” A 19th-century Missouri court case about a dog is credited with further popularizing that nickname for our beloved canine companions.

The story begins in the fall of 1869 in Johnson County , Missouri, with a frustrated sheep farmer named Leonidas Hornsby.

Hornsby had lost over a hundred sheep to wild dogs and wolves. His anger finally spilled over and he told anyone who’d listen that he’d shoot the next dog or wolf that wandered onto his property.

On the evening of October 28, Hornsby observed a hound dog in his yard. Hornsby’s nephew, Samuel “Dick” Ferguson, believed they should shoot the dog. According to Hornsby, he told Ferguson to only scare the animal by loading a rifle with corn and shooting it. Ferguson did as he was told and shot the dog. Hornsby later claimed the dog jumped in pain, then jumped over a small fence and ran away.

Hornsby’s brother-in-law, Charles Burden, lived on a neighboring farm and heard the shot. Burden, who owned many dogs, called after his animals. All but one dog returned home: a black and tan hound dog named Old Drum.

When the dog failed to return home by the following morning, Burden went to his neighbors and eventually his brother-in-law, asking if they knew what may have happened. Hornsby acknowledged that his nephew shot at a dog but denied seeing Old Drum specifically.

Burden later found Old Drum along the muddy bank of the Big Creek, approximately six miles southwest of Kingsville, face down in the water. Burden saw evidence that led him to believe his beloved hunting dog didn’t walk the creek but had been carried and left there. He suspected his brother-in-law to be the culprit.

According to the Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Society , Burden threatened to kill Hornsby but opted for legal justice instead. He sued Hornsby for $100 in damages (approximately $2,281.81 in 2024 dollars). The amount was later amended to $50, but jurors could not agree if Hornsby had ordered his nephew to shoot Old Drum. The case was retried in January 1870, with Burden being awarded $25 and court costs.

Hornsby’s appeal was heard in March 1870. According to court testimony, Hornsby and Ferguson went to Big Creek, found Old Drum’s remains, and removed the lead bullets from the dog’s body. But because Burden’s attorneys could not prove Hornsby directly caused Old Drum’s death, the court reversed the previous decision and awarded Hornsby court costs.

Burden filed for a new trial, citing new evidence on the matter. Both sides hired prominent Missouri lawyers to litigate the matter this time around. Francis M. Cockrell and Thomas T. Crittenden argued on behalf of Hornsby, while John F. Philips and George Graham West joined Burden’s existing legal team. West

In this fourth trial, held at the Old Johnson County Courthouse in Warrensburg , Hornsby testified that he told his nephew to shoot a dog but claimed it wasn’t Old Drum. Burden’s attorneys pointed out that no other dog was shot dead in the area.

On September 23, West delivered closing remarks to the jury and chose a peculiar tactic. He made no specific mention of Old Drum nor did he speak of the case or evidence. Instead, West appealed to jurors with a eulogy for all dogs and their unconditional love.

Gentlemen of the jury: the best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. Gentleman of the jury: a man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and the sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert he remains. When riches take wings and reputation fall to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death. George Graham Vest, “ Eulogy of the Dog “

Vest’s words won the day, and the jury awarded Burden a $50 judgment. Hornsby appealed again, this time to the Missouri Supreme Court. In July 1872, the Missouri Supreme Court upheld the ruling in favor of Burden.

Monuments were later built in memory of Old Drum and Vest’s dramatic courtroom speech. In December 1947, Fred Ford placed a stone monument along Big Creek near the location where Old Drum was found. In September 1958, Italian-born sculptor Reno J. Gastaldi fashioned a bronze statue of Old Drum. The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, along with donations from all over the country, paid for the statue. The monument is adorned with a plaque containing the words of Vest’s eulogy.

More recently, a bust of Old Drum can be found in the Missouri Supreme Court Building. And in the summer of 2017, the Missouri Legislature approved a measure designating Old Drum as the state’s official historical dog.

According to the City of Warrensburg website , Burden and Hornsby made amends in the years after the case. Both men are buried close to each other in the Hornsby Cemetery, located near Kingsville.

And what of the phrase “man’s best friend”? It’s become state legend that the nickname was derived from this court case. Unfortunately, that’s a canard—an old wives’ tale. Now, it is true that Vest’s closing arguments contributed to the growing popularity of “man’s best friend,” but the phrase draws its origins across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe.

King Frederick II of Prussia is widely-credited with having the first recorded use of the term “man’s best friend” while speaking of one of his Italian greyhounds. The French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire used the phrase in his “Dictionnaire philosophique” in 1764.

As for the United States, a C.S. Winkle poem published in 1821 refers to the faithful dog as “man’s best friend.” It didn’t become a widespread term until 1941, when American poet Ogden Nash published “An Introduction to Dogs.”

Firefighters in New Jersey come to the rescue of a yellow Labrador stuck in a spare tire

FRANKLINVILLE, N.J. (AP) — Firefighters in southern New Jersey came to the rescue of a dog who got stuck in a spare tire.

The Franklinville Volunteer Fire Company crew found Daisy, an 11-month-old yellow Labrador, when they responded to a Franklin Township home last Thursday. Her neck was deep in the middle of the tire rim, and the firefighters worked quickly to devise a rescue plan while attempting to keep Daisy calm.

In this photo provided by the Franklinville Volunteer Fire Company, firefighters attempt to...

Lt. Brandon Volpe told  The Philadelphia Inquirer  that the crew first used dish soap and water but couldn’t free the dog, who was “pretty stuck in there.” They then tried vegetable oil and when that didn’t work they put plastic wrap around her neck, hoping the oil and soap would make it slippery enough for her to slide down.

When that also failed, Volpe remembered he had plasma cutters — used for cutting steel and metal — at his home, so the crew put Daisy on a red wagon and headed to Volpe’s garage.

Volpe recalls the dog “panicked a little bit,” but a fire blanket was put around her head and neck for protection. Within five minutes, Daisy was free.
