Definition of English Articles in Grammar for Class 4 

As we know, there are three articles in English , an and the . A and an are indefinite articles while the is a definite article.

The: English Articles in Grammar for Class 4

We use the before both singular and plural nouns to talk about something definite.

1. when we talk about something, in particular,

a. the bag that I like

b. the shop at the corner

c. the rivers in the country

2. when a noun is mentioned a second time

●I met a girl yesterday. The girl studies in your college.

●Roshan has borrowed my car. The car is with him.

3. when we state facts that are universal truths

●The sun rises in the east.

We use ‘ a’ or ‘an’ before singular countable nouns that refer to something in general.

We use ‘a’ before nouns beginning with consonant sounds.

●Hema is flying a k ite. (consonant sound k)

●Ruhi is standing next to a b icycle. (consonant sound b)

●There is a z oo near my house. (consonant sound z)

We use ‘an’ before nouns beginning with vowel sounds.

●Mala has an o ven at her house. (vowel sound o)

●I eat an e gg for breakfast. (vowel sound e)

●I forgot to buy an i tem. (vowel sound i)

Sometimes, even though a noun may begin with a vowel letter, it has a consonant sound. In such cases, we use the article a and not an.

(vowel letter, but sounds like the consonant ‘y’)

●My friend Erica is a E uropean.

Similarly, some nouns begin with a consonant but have a vowel sound. In such cases, we use the article ‘an’, not ‘a’.
