To be a teacher of those who are pursuing higher education, you will need a Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D., or a Doctor of Arts, or D.A. degree. There is a slight difference between a D.A. and Ph.D. While both degrees are designed to prepare graduate students for parallel careers in academia, each takes a different path to achieving the distinction.

The difference between a Doctor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy is slight. A Doctor of Arts delves deep into a specific subject, while a Doctor of Philosophy is more research based.

Difference Between D.A. and Ph.D.

Although the results may be similar upon graduation, the method of obtaining a degree in the field is rather different. Simply put, one is more research based and the other is more about skills. A Doctor of Philosophy student will spend much of his graduate career researching. A student in pursuit of a Doctor of Arts degree will spend more time on perfecting high-level teaching skills to benefit students.

Requirements for a Ph.D.

A Doctor of Philosophy can be labeled as Ph.D. or DPhil., depending on the culture, country or society that is labeling it. A Ph.D. is the highest academic degree that is awarded by a college or university in most countries around the world. It is an earned research degree where students are required to demonstrate subject-matter expertise and mastery by examination as well as to produce a new scholarly contribution to their area of expertise by means of the research they have conducted on their own during their college career. On average, a Ph.D. takes up to eight years to complete. A doctorate degree can typically take four years to finish and up to six years to complete depending on internships and other requirements of the institution. D.A. Degree in Detail

Fairly new in terms of distinction, the Doctor of Arts is a discipline-based doctoral degree. The D.A. distinction shows that the professional has gained an academic degree of the highest level. It is also known or abbreviated as an Art.D., which is derived from atrium doctor in Latin, or D.Arts. A D.A. was originally designed to be an alternative to the Doctor of Philosophy, which is the traditional research-based Ph.D., and the Doctor of Education, or Ed.D., which is education based.

A D.A. degree includes a Doctor of Art History and Doctor of Fine Arts. The Doctor of Fine Arts abbreviation is D.F.A. The Doctor of Arts degree was first brought up as an alternative to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1932. The idea was originally presented to the Association of American Universities. Its purpose was to offer a shift away from an emphasis on research and more on the advanced study of a specific area of expertise, design of curriculum or discipline or theories applied in education. Those who pursue a Doctor of Arts degree are studying a subject deeply in order to become teachers and scholars in their field. It’s a fairly wide-reaching pursuit. A D.A. degree can range from acting to mathematics. A Doctor of Arts is typically a four-year degree.

Dissertation Requirements for Both Degrees

This can be tricky. Not every institution or degree requires a dissertation. The institution should make it clear before you begin whether a dissertation is needed to graduate. The long essay or paper on a specific subject is more than likely required for all Doctor of Philosophy degrees. However, there are some Ph.D. programs, specifically online, that offer a degree without a dissertation. It is more rare for a Doctor of Arts program to require a dissertation in order to graduate.

As a PhD student in the Harvard philosophy program, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your ideas, knowledge, and abilities. You'll work with other doctoral students, our faculty, and visiting scholars, all in a stimulating and supportive environment. The program has strengths across a broad range of topics and areas, so you'll be able to pursue your interests wherever they may lead, especially in moral and political philosophy, aesthetics, epistemology, philosophy of logic, philosophy of language, the history of analytic philosophy, ancient philosophy, Immanuel Kant, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. In addition, students can pursue joint degrees with classics, Harvard Law School, and in Indian philosophy.

Incoming cohorts consist of five to eight students per year. You will have substantial access to our renowned faculty and all the resources that Harvard makes available. This relatively small size also gives students a sense of intellectual community.

The curriculum is structured to help you make your way towards a dissertation: graduate-level coursework, a second-year research paper, a prospectus to help you identify a dissertation topic, and then the dissertation itself. Past dissertations in the department have addressed a broad range of topics: Aristotle, Kant, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau; contemporary moral and political philosophy; metaphysics; epistemology; and logic.

In addition to your research, you will also have the opportunity to develop your teaching skills in many different settings across the University.

You can find graduates of the PhD program in many universities. Some of our students have gone on to faculty positions at Yale University, Princeton University, Brown University, and Stanford University. Other graduates have gone on to diverse careers in, among others, the arts, the law, secondary education, and technology.

In addition to the standard PhD in philosophy, the department offers a PhD in classical philosophy in collaboration with the Department of the Classics and a coordinated JD/PhD program in conjunction with Harvard Law School.

A writing sample is required as part of the application and should be between 12 to 30 pages long. The sample must address a substantial philosophical problem, whether it is an evaluation or presentation of an argument, or a serious attempt to interpret a difficult text. The upload of the writing sample should be formatted for 8.5-inch x 11-inch paper, 1-inch margins, with double-spaced text in a common 12-point font, such as Times New Roman.

The consideration between earning a master’s vs PhD is not always an easy choice. While many careers and personal aspirations may be complete with just an undergraduate degree (Associate’s or Bachelor’s), a lot of people continue their higher education to obtain graduate degrees. These include a master’s and/or a PhD.

Neither a master’s degree nor a PhD is considered to be a walk in the park. Therefore, it’s useful to understand why you would earn either and then decide how far to go.

Earning a master’s degree through a taught program will result in the completion of a Master of Art (MA), Master of Science (MS), or Master of Philosophy (MPhil). There are also degree-specific master’s programs like Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Education (M.Ed).

After earning a master’s degree, the next step is a PhD, which entails both working and performing research at an institution. A PhD is an abbreviation for “Doctor of Philosophy.” It is the highest academic degree one can achieve. As such, it is a time-consuming pursuit that requires a lot of studying and research.

You may be wondering, “Do you need a master’s to get a PhD?”

Technically, the answer is not always. Some students skip a master’s and go straight for their PhD, but they may lack research experience. While it could save money, the transition between a bachelor’s and a PhD is incredibly sharp. It may be harder to complete a PhD without the experience from a master’s.

Yet, some institutions may allow for the possibility to earn both your master’s and PhD in conjunction with one another. This will alleviate the transition between skipping a master’s and going straight to earning a PhD.

Should You Get a Master’s or PhD?

There are many considerations to factor when deciding between a master’s of PhD. Another useful thing to note is that a master’s degree can be used for a shift in careers. For example, if you attended college and earned a bachelor’s degree in humanities, but now you want to pursue science, you can still earn your master’s degree in a scientific discipline. Length of Time

A typical master’s degree program takes about two years full-time. However, there are accelerated programs that can be completed in just a year or so.

A PhD, in general, requires five to six years of studying, teaching, and research. However, it may even take some students up to eight or nine years to graduate. With this significant investment in time, it’s necessary to know if a PhD is right for you before starting.

The cost of both programs varies by institution and enrollment status of part-time versus full-time. However, since a PhD takes longer to complete, it will end up costing more. With that said, if you look into your return on investment, a PhD could end up yielding a higher salary, and therefore end up “costing less.”

Additionally, there is also the possibility of being paid to complete your PhD. Some students may receive an academic stipend, a university fellowship or apprenticeship or a reduced fee to earn their PhD while completing research (or teaching) at an institution. It’s also possible to get financial aid through a scholarship or grant.

As tuition rates continue to rise, it’s useful to look into alternative institutions for affordable education. For example, the University of the People offers a tuition-free master’s program in Business Administration and Education. This means you can study 100% online and graduate for less than the cost of most programs.

Doctor of Arts (DA) vs PhD vs EdD

Like the PhD and EdD, the DA is a research-led terminal degree recognized by accrediting agencies and governmental bodies such as the National Science Foundation; however, the DA, while grounded in content, is more pedagogically focused than the PhD and more disciplinarily centered than the EdD.

Online Doctorate in English

Four specializations..

A broad range of electives allows for both exploration and specialization. Students may specialize in Language, Literacy, Literature or Writing. Of course, we encourage students to explore outside of a single specialization.

Two routes.

Traditional DA: 48-hour route for students who already hold a master's degree. Accelerated MA to DA: 72-hour route for students who hold a bachelor's degree but want to complete both the MA in English and the DA in English Pedagogy with a Literature specialization more quickly than by completing each degree separately.

Study where you are.

The program may be completed entirely online through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous courses. No residency is required. Please be aware that as a result of changes wrought by the pandemic, our on-campus courses will be extremely limited for the foreseeable future. We cannot guarantee that on-campus courses will be available. 

Cohort model.

Join a mutually supportive cohort of students from various states and countries whose camaraderie transcends thousands of miles and many diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our students include consultants, writers, journalists, materials developers and teachers from middle school to university; some just love the field of English.

Rolling admissions.

Applications are accepted year-round. Students may begin elective coursework during the next term following admission and may begin the pedagogical core sequence with a cohort during the next available Fall semester. Students admitted after cohort capacity has been reached may nevertheless begin elective coursework.  

Graduate Programs Cost of Attendance

Cost competitive.

Tuition rates for 2022-23 are $607 per credit hour for Kentucky residents on-campus and $559.50 per credit hour for online students worldwide. All online courses will have an additional $50 per credit hour online course fee.

Requirements for Admission

Applicants must comply with the Murray State University graduate admission requirements .

For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL score of 20 for each section of the iBT, an IELTS score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6.0 is required; however if non-native English speakers submit English proficiency test scores below the minimum, English proficiency will be interpreted in light of other evidence of English proficiency, such as prior degrees from higher education institutions at which English is the language of instruction, publications in English, interviews, and/or on-site evaluation.

Additional requirements for unconditional and conditional admission are: 

• Master’s degree in English, English Education, TESOL or closely related discipline (including Education with significant coursework in English language arts such as reading, writing and literacy), with 30 graduate credit-hours and a graduate GPA of 3.2 or higher;
• Completion of a graduate-level research skills course in English, English Education, TESOL or closely related discipline with a grade of 3.0 or higher;
• Sample of writing in the field judged to be indicative of likely success in an English doctoral program;
• Portfolio of teaching or other professional materials of the applicant’s own design indicative of professional ability; 
• Three satisfactory letters of reference, at least two of which address the applicant’s academic ability and at least one of which addresses the applicant’s professional ability;
• Satisfactory interview with graduate faculty.
• Master’s degree in English, English Education, TESOL or closely related discipline (including Education with significant coursework in English language arts such as reading, writing and literacy), with 30 graduate credit-hours and a graduate GPA of 3.0;
• Three satisfactory letters of reference, at least two of which address the applicant’s academic ability and at least one of which addresses the applicant’s professional ability;
• Satisfactory interview with graduate faculty;
• Other evidence such as teaching experience, professional achievement, GRE General Test scores indicative of likely success in an English doctoral program;
• and/or a planned program of prerequisite courses.

Please note: Meeting the above criteria does not guarantee admission to a cohort. The program may also defer admission to a later date.

• A baccalaureate degree (BA or MA) or its equivalent from an accredited institution of higher education, normally in an arts and humanities field.  
• Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must submit 3 letters of recommendation from faculty, or other individuals, able to judge the candidate’s potential for success in the program.  
• Admissions Essay: Applicants must submit a 650-word narrative essay, which should be reflective rather than factual. The essay should address the applicant’s academic interests and goals and indicate how the program would enable such pursuits.  
• A writing sample: Submit an academic writing sample (e.g., a seminar paper or a critical essay). 
• International applicants must submit a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the internet-based test.  Scores must be less than two years old. See the  Graduate Catalog  for additional information regarding English proficiency requirements for international applicants.  
• Each application is considered holistically on its individual merits. You must submit all supporting documents before the Graduate Admissions Committee can review your application.

It is a four-year program but allows enough flexibility for some students to complete their studies in as little as two to three years but said time-to-completion is predicated on full-time study and determination. Most students complete the degree requirements in four years – and even then, the time-to-completion may be extended for other reasons. 

There are eight outstanding Doctor of Arts fellowship opportunities at Idaho State, and the entire program is funded by support from the first D.A. degree established at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1967. These fellowships are competitive and can be renewed based on satisfactory progress on an annual basis for four years. Fellows receive $12,164 every year and don’t have teaching requirements. 

Applicants must have completed a master’s degree that included an independent thesis project in biological research. Other requirements are a minimum of 3.0 GPA for the last two years of undergraduate work and GRE scores in the 35th percentile (minimum) on the quantitative and verbal sections.
