The DV410 dissertation is a major component of the MSc programme and an important part of the learning and development process involved in postgraduate education. The objective of DV410  is to provide students with an overview of the resources available to them to research and write a 10,000 dissertation that is topical, original, scholarly, and substantial. DV410 will provide curated dissertation pathways through LSE LIFE and Methods courses, information sessions, ID-specific disciplinary teaching, topical seminars and dissertation worksops in ST. With this in mind, students will be able to design their own training pathway and set their own learning objectives in relation to their specific needs for their dissertation. From the Autumn Term (AT) through to Summer Term (ST), students will discuss and develop their ideas in consultation with their mentor or other members of the ID department staff and have access to a range of learning resources (via DV410 Moodle page) to support and develop their individual projects from within the department and across the LSE.

Political & International Dimensions of Development

Development, as managed change, is an inherently political process. The exercise of power and resistance to it are at the heart of that process. Research on development, therefore, requires a critical approach to the state and dominant institutions – local, national and international – and an analysis of how power is created and contested at multiple levels.

Human Development, Poverty and Youth

Poverty and human development have long been core areas of research for the department. Going beyond a narrow conception of per capita income, our approach incorporates health, education, living standards and quality of work – all of which enable productive, creative and autonomous lives.

Migration & Refugees in a Global Context

Migration in its various forms has become a central feature of international development in its economic, political, legal, social and cultural dimensions. Oxford now leads the world in research on this vital subject.

Thinking on development—and its application in practice—can be properly understood only within its particular historical, political, and institutional contexts. This volume traces the history of thinking in various segments of development, maps the range of approaches to each, and set out options and possibilities for the future. A central premise is that an objective and universally‐accepted measure of “success” in development and paths to it does not exist. If the countries of the world are varied in every way from their initial conditions to the degree of their openness to outside money and influence, and success is not centered in any one group, it stands to reason that there cannot be a single recipe for development. Each chapter presents an analytical survey of thinking about development, highlighting debates and taking into account critical perspectives. The first half of the volume traces the concepts and theories currently used to explain development, where they came from, and where they may be going. The latter half captures how the real‐life experiences of different countries and organizations have been inspired by, and contributed to, thinking on development. The volume concludes by looking ahead and to discern the likely course of development and of development thinking in the next fifty years. This is a key reference on the range of concepts used to think about development—their origins, evolution, and trajectories—and is intended as a valued resource for an audience of scholars, graduate students, and practitioners.

Key information

Module overview.

The students enrolled in this module will have completed core and option modules within the MSc Research for International Development by the time they complete their dissertation. By conducting a project on a topic of their choice (approved by the convener and supervisor) and writing a dissertation on it, the students will demonstrate their knowledge and intellectual capacity that they have acquired in the programme.

The dissertation will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of topics and themes in international development; critically appraise theoretical and empirical literature in this area; and to apply a variety of research methods appropriate for use in the analysis of international development issues.

The 10,000 word dissertation must be submitted by September in the final year of study. Examples of dissertation topics include:

Realist randomised controlled trials of development interventions in practice – concrete design suggestions to address the problem of external validity.

How have global processes of labour informalisation impacted so-called ‘formal’ employment conditions in Vietnam, and how is this related to labour militancy? A literature review and proposed conceptual framework.

M&E (&L?): The incorporation of organisational learning in humanitarian monitoring and evaluation

A political economy of the use of statistics in West African labour market policy: What do we really know about the potential of the informal economy to deliver ‘decent work’ for young people?
