5 Critical Elements of a Christmas Service Presentation

With all the preparation you’re putting into your Christmas services , don’t forget one of the most important elements: presentation slides.

What should you keep in mind as you build your service slides for Christmas and Christmas Eve?

Here are five tips we recommend for a cohesive, memorable service. These are all simple to do in our church presentation software, Proclaim .

1. Pick a Christmas presentation theme

Choosing a theme for your Christmas services serves your congregation by giving them one truth to focus on, and it makes your planning easier.

You could make your theme something more abstract like light, hope, or love, or you could be more concrete, perhaps focusing on a character in the Luke birth narrative or on a particular Bible text.

Whatever your theme, you can then build your song and slide choices around it. Searching for your theme in the Proclaim Media Browser is a great place to start.

For example, I searched “Light” and immediately saw several design themes I can use across my whole service.

2. Fit songs to your theme

You can use Faithlife Music to search worship songs by theme, which could help you narrow down your Christmas song choices .

When you’ve selected your songs, you can instantly add your lyric slides in Proclaim simply by typing the song title. (This is true for everyone through the Faithlife Music database, but it works with even more songs if you link your CCLI account to Proclaim.)

3. Use Christmas Bible verse art

Another element of Proclaim ideal for Christmas services is Bible Art.

There are several Christmas-related passages with Bible Art that you could add to your presentation, either in the pre-service loop or in the service itself.

4. Include church announcements in your pre-service roll

Anytime your church gathers, it’s good to reinforce important information and ways to get involved.

Additionally, with many visitors potentially in your midst, displaying 4–5 announcements is a good way to help them see what the Church (and your church) is all about—whether they are Christians without a home church or do not yet believe in Jesus.

If they see mention of Bible studies , service projects in your community, youth group events, etc., they’ll see that church isn’t just about coming and learning. They’ll learn that your church is a vibrant community full of love, living out its faith—a compelling sight for non-believers and visitors alike.

So to not include announcements at some point in the service is a missed opportunity, both for regular attenders and first-time visitors.

5. Record your sermon

I’ve written about why it’s important to record your sermon during the Christmas season , but I’ll reiterate it again here.

Simply put, it’s a service to those who are out of town and miss your sermon, as well as to anyone who heard the sermon but wants to listen to it again.

You never know who may be in the service and how the sermon may touch them. Giving them an opportunity to continue engaging with the Word is important, and in Proclaim it’s as simple as a click.

Christmas Presentation Tips

Towards the end of each year, you may be asked to give a presentation, such as an end of year review, targets for the next year etc., to your team, senior management or perhaps a client.  Or, perhaps during Christmas you might be called upon to give a speech at a family celebration.

This year may be slightly different, in that you may have to do this virtually, via a webcam, instead of in a room full of people!  Rather than panic about this, draw on your presentation skills previously learned and adapt them to fit the virtual world.

Here are some light-hearted quirky Christmas Presentation tips (using the acronym Christmas) to help!

C is for CEO

Have you ever noticed that most CEOs tend to stand tall and command a room?  They exude confidence and have a presence about them.  Even if they are sitting, they tend to sit up, rather than slouch.

There is no reason why you can’t do that too! You don’t have to be a CEO to look and sound more confident .

You may think it’s impossible because you are presenting virtually, but you can still have that CEO aura around you – even when presenting sitting down.  However, some people feel they have more of a presence when standing.  If this applies to you, why not consider standing up when speaking to your webcam?  This can bring an energy to your stance, and you could well find yourself using natural gestures more often.

Regardless of whether you stand or sit.  Stretch your spine, be as tall as you can, take a deep breath and pause.  It will help make you look and feel more confident.

H is for Happy!

Look happy to be with your audience – and not just because it’s the season to be jolly!

You are more likely to build a rapport with the audience if they can see that you  want to be there presenting to them.

I think we all agree that is is more difficult to connect with your audience when presenting virtually.  Therefore, it is even more important to engage with them in an upbeat manner.  Remember that congruency is key to maintaining that connection.  Your facial expression must match your content.  For example, if you delivering good news, then look happy!  If, on the other hand, your message is more serious in nature, then it is probably best to tone down the ‘happy vibes’ and also vary your vocal pitch accordingly.

R is for Reduce

Reduce your content to increase your impact.

Most people have too much content in their presentations.

If you reduce your content it is a win-win situation.  You win, because you have less to remember, your audience wins because they have less content to try to absorb.  Save your additional material for the questions and answers.

This point is even more important when presenting virtually.  Not only is the attention span of your audience around 10 minutes, but you also will be competing with other distractions e.g. emails, phone, online games, online shopping and possibly even the odd pet or child rambling in for a cuddle!

Keep your content to a minimum, reduce the amount of text-based slides, ditch the bullet points, and your audience will thank you for it!

I is for Include

Include your audience as much as you can.

Try asking questions to get them involved, use analogies that resonate with them and if at all possible have them contribute.  If it’s a virtual presentation, make use of the features found in the software to help make it a bit more interactive – polls, chat, whiteboards, breakout rooms, are a few examples – if nothing else, it keeps them awake!

S is for Squeeze

Squeeze your buttocks – if you are feeling nervous it is a great way to do something useful with the adrenalin.

The 3 main benefits of doing this are 1) it can bring a smile to your face because it is a bit wacky!  2) it is great for your glutes, aka gluteus maximus 3) most importantly, it takes your mind off the nerves.  And a bonus is that it doesn’t matter if you are presenting in-person to a room full of people, or if you are in front of your webcam presenting to a faceless audience.  Try it – it definitely works!

T is for Talk

Talk nicely to yourself before your presentation.  Clients participating in our company presentations training courses, often tell us how they feel about their presentation skills.  “I’m just no good at presenting … I always forget something … I feel I am not coming across as myself”.

Stop talking to yourself in a negative way – talk nicely to yourself – you will be amazed at the difference a change of mindset can make!

M is for Mantra

Following from our previous point – find a positive mantra to get yourself in the right frame of mind.  Use positive language.  It might be something as simple as “I am ready for this and it is going to go really well”.  Or you could use the Muhammad Ali one … “I AM the greatest”.  Or a mantra that puts things in context … “it’s only a presentation, not brain surgery”.

It really doesn’t matter what you say so long as it works for YOU.

A is for Audience

They are the most important people in the room, or on-screen.

You are speaking to get an action or reaction from them.  Keep this in mind at every step as you prepare and deliver your presentation.  Make sure you research who your audience is before you create your presentation.  Your message should be clear and concise, and your presentation should address the needs of the audience.

S is for Smile – wherever appropriate

Apart from the fact that it is the cheapest way to improve your looks, smiling has numerous benefits.

These include, lowering your heart rate, releasing endorphins, creating a connection with your audience and last, but not least, it makes you look more confident regardless of how you feel inside.

A word of warning though – don’t keep a smile plastered on your face all the way through your presentation as it can look fake.

Smile at the start of your presentation to help them warm to you, smile at the end and anywhere else where appropriate.  As Mark Twain said  “Never regret anything that made you smile”.  Keep smiling, chances are, you won’t regret it!

So, whether you have to present to your team, your clients or give a family speech this Christmas time – remember this acronym and it might just help you to give your best (virtual) presentation ever!

Recognise and reward: How to perfect your Christmas party presentation

Black Friday

The end of year Christmas party is the perfect concoction of punch and presentations. Trouble is, most of us get stuck into the sangria to try and drown out the nerves that usually come along with having to do a big speech in front of everyone.

Thankfully, with a little preparation (and restraint) you can give the perfect presentation that everyone will remember — in a good way, not a bad one.

Recognise and reward

Any time you’ve got all your people together is a great opportunity for you to celebrate achievements and boost comradery.

Research shows   88% of employees agree it’s important employers reward them for great work. While other studies show employees who receive strong recognition are 33% more likely to be proactive and innovative. That is reason enough to say thanks!

It’s crucial to recognise and reward everyone (not just the chosen few) at the end of the year. Whatever goes down now, will set you up for the months that follow. If you want to make next year the best and most creative yet (which you do), then think about getting people excited about that now.

Don’t wait until the end of the year to critique or play the blame game. It’s really easy to get sucked into what didn’t work, what accounts you lost, or pitches were not won, but now is not the time to bring that up.

Focus on what went right, what clients you did win, and, most importantly, how you worked together as a team.

Realign the vision

Your culture really dictates how everyone behaves in your business. It’s made up of the shared values and beliefs that you set and say are essential.  

So the end of the year is a great time to remind everyone in the team, the direction that the business is heading in. It’s when people feel like they are part of something bigger they start to achieve more together.

It’s still important to be transparent, however. Don’t lie and say it was the best year yet if it wasn’t. Be open and honest when things haven’t gone to plan, or tracked well. There’s nothing worse than working for a company and feeling like you’re just being lied to — transparency is the key to trust and a thriving culture.

But do remember to talk about what you might do differently next year to combat that. That does not mean company restructures and job losses! Reiterate how important it is you all work together, how much you trust everyone and value their opinions and ideas.

It’s vital to strengthen your message — your vision, values and culture — so that they are clear and translated to everyone, ready to ring in the next year.

Above all else, remember you are all human. And as individuals, we all long to belong and to feel valued.

Share your aspirations, as well as your own challenges — don’t be afraid to show a little vulnerability. Your team will appreciate you for that. What did you find hard? What are you looking forward to trying next year?

Of course, it’s easy to forget this when you’ve got your head down, day in, day out, churning through work, but when you remind everyone that you’re all on the journey together then you reduce fear and instil confidence in every individual involved.

That’s when everyone will connect to a future they want to be a part of and will remember your presentation long after the sangria has gone down.

Search unbc, three minute thesis (3mt ® ), judging criteria, rules & eligibility, judging criteria, communication.

  • Did the presenter use non-verbal communication (i.e. eye contact, voice modulation, body language) effectively?
  • Did the presenter use language and terminology that was clear, jargon-free, and understandable to a general audience?
  • Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation? Did they elaborate for too long on one aspect, or did the presentation feel rushed?
  • Did the presentation follow a logical sequence?
  • Was the talk engaging?
  • Did the presenter capture and maintain the audience's attention?
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their work?
  • Was the presenter careful not to trivialise or generalise their research?
  • Did the Powerpoint slide enhance the presentation - was it clear, legible, and concise?

Comprehension

  • Did the talk help you to understand the scholarly research being undertaken?
  • Did the presenter clearly outline the nature and purpose of their research?
  • Did the presenter clearly indicate the fascinating or compelling aspects of their research?
  • Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes? 
  • A single static Powerpoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration).
  • Powerpoint slide should be created using an aspect ratio of 16:9.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be delivered in regular prose (e.g. no poems, slam poetry, raps, or spoken word presentations).
  • Presentations are to commence from and remain on the stage.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter initiates through movement or speech.
  • The decision of the judging panel is final.

Eligibility

Reference:  CAGS (Canadian Association for Graduate Studies)

  • To participate in 3MT ®  you must currently be registered in either a Master's or Ph.D. graduate program at UNBC.
  • Students who have defended but have not yet graduated are eligible. Students must not have graduated prior to March 2024.
  • Students who competed in previous 3MT® editions at UNBC may participate, but their presentation must be new for 2024.
  • Presentations must be based on research that is directly related to the student’s graduate program thesis. Research performed for employment should not be presented.
  • Presenters must be available to present on the day of the competition. To advance in the competition, winners must also be available to present  at the Western Regional Finals (date and location TBD). They must also agree to be photographed and video-taped, and allow any recordings to be made public.

In the not-so-distant past, people would express their Christmas spirit by lighting candles on trees. “Generally, the tree was set up in the parlor and when all the family would come down to see the tree, dad or grandpa would light up all the candles,” says John Hanssen, a member of the Golden Glow of Christmas Past , an international organization for Christmas history. “You’d look at it for a few seconds and blow them out.”

Of course, not all of them would be properly extinguished, resulting in numerous fires. This led to the introduction of Christmas lights. The first set of Christmas lights were displayed in 1882 by Edward Johnson, a friend and partner of light-bulb inventor Thomas Edison.

Creating Your Christmas Light Contest (Rules, Categories, etc.)

Many Christmas light contests are just for fun or bragging rights, while others can have significant prizes. To truly understand how competitive people can become over their holiday displays, one need not look any further than the television reality series The Great Christmas Light Fight . It’s been on the air since 2013!

Voting on holiday decorating can get heated! To make sure the Christmas light competition is fair, you’ll want to be sure the judging criteria is clear to participants. For example, the contest is large, you might want to consider different categories, such as:

  • Most creative and imaginative 
  • Most traditional
  • Best use of lights
  • Best use of music and technology
  • Best use of toys and/or inflatables

You might also create categories for each type of dwelling, such as home, apartment, duplex, and so on. Choose a date by which houses must be decorated, and specify the day and time for judging and the announcement of the winners. 

Finally, identify how judging will be done. Sometimes, it’s elected officials or local celebrities serving as judges; other times, it’s everyone in the neighborhood. Remember to specify if there will be prizes. If prizes are substantial, you’re likely to get a lot more entrants. So, you might want to consider an entry fee for participating.

How to Create Your Holiday Decorating Contest Survey with SurveyLegend

  • Login to your account
  • Add a new survey, and navigate to the CREATE step.

  • If you like, change the layout and size of holiday display photos using the settings on the left-hand side. You can also choose whichever voting type you prefer. People usually use the “Ranking” voting type and let people vote for their top 3 favorites. 
  • Go to the DESIGN step to change the look and feel of your survey (for example, you can choose a dark theme or upload your own background).
  • Go to the CONFIGURE step and give your holiday light contest a good name so that you remember it. Also make sure you have this setting ON: “Limit number of participations” which will make sure people cannot vote multiple times to influence results.
  • Finally, continue to the SHARE step, copy your competition link, and send it to your audience using SMS, Email, Facebook, Slack or whatever platform you like.
  • When the distribution of your best holiday light display is done, go to Live Analytics and watch as the results come in.

If you’re holding a holiday party, you can also use video projection to broadcast the live analytics page to all attendees. They can watch, in real-time, as the votes roll in. This makes your holiday light competition a lot more fun!
