Chitralahari Review: Almost a feel-good film

Vijay (Sai Dharam Tej) struggles for success. Not only in his career but also in simple daily events. He is a talented engineer who has a proposal for a project which he believes will save many lives. Despite his best efforts, he gets nowhere. Amidst his rejections and the taunting neighbours, he finds solace in the form of his father’s encouragement, and his girlfriend Lahari’s (Kalyani Priyadarshan) love. However, he does lie to Lahari about his drinking habit which she absolutely despises.

Swecha, Lahari’s cynical friend advises her to rethink her relationship if it was based on lies. Swecha also happens to be a part of the corporation to which Vijay pitches his project to, and the one who likes his concept. The story, which starts with Vijay being questioned in court, unravels to reveal how he ended up there, whether he finds success and if he reunites with his lover.

Chitralahari has many interesting points to put forth. It is an honest story with no frills. And that’s what wins. However, it falls a little short on harvesting the emotions and drama in the lives of these characters. The makers put more effort to write one-liners about life, love, and gender, which to be honest is rather unnecessary. What was impressive to me was that, despite the misleading trailer, the film isn’t a triangular love story. The writer doesn’t go down the easy route of adding a romantic angle with Nivetha, just because she’s the other female lead. The relationship between Swecha and Vijay is strictly professional, platonic, and significant to the plot.  Kalyani plays to her strengths as the indecisive, mild-mannered Lahari. Same goes for Nivetha who convinces the audience that she is the boss you would be afraid of. Sai Dharam Tej is impressive in a role that isn’t exactly his comfort zone. It really looks like he's channeled something of his own into Vijay. It would be delightful to see him improve further, for which there is clearly still scope. The music, besides the introduction song (particularly the whistle tune), really doesn’t stay with you nor does it do much for the film.  All in all, Chitralahari falls just a tad bit short of being a feel-good movie. Whether it is the fact that the emotions aren’t coming through or if it's because there is too much going on in the two-hour runtime, is for you to decide. However, this isn’t a bad watch. If you have the time, go for it.

What's it about!

Vijay Krishna (Sai Dharam Tej) is a youngster. He has not tasted much success in life though he does it have in his name. Such unlucky person's life gets change when two women enter in his life. The first girl who brought brightness to his otherwise dull life is Lahari (Kalyani Priyadarshan), a Hyderabadi student and the girl who instilled confidence in him is Swechcha (Nivetha Pethuraj), a corporate executive. How these two women have impact in his life and how he finds success is the film all about.

Director Kishore Tirumala of 'Nenu Sailaja' and 'Vunnadi Okate Zindagi' has written a story about a "rejected piece" (loser) finding his mojo in unexpected manner. In other words, it is a film about an unsuccessful youth's success story.

He sets the story by narrating how his innovations (he's engineer who likes to invent something new) gets rejected by investors and how he finds solace in alcohol. He brings conflict point with the introduction of Lahari, who brings veluturu (light) to his cheekati (dark) life. But she doesn't like persons who drink alcohol. He lies about his drinking habit and this becomes conflict point is narrated well.

It begins on a slow note but the film gets in groove in the middle point despite occasional slips and meandering. The director brings in another girl into his life in the second half and also comes to the core point of the plot thus making the movie “heavy” and “preachy” and also to the triangle tangle.

Kishore Tirumala has right material that would easily connect to the young audiences but where he has erred is in screenplay. Moreover, the situations that he has written like the character of Brahmaji, a corporate guy, plotting against him is quite predictable and mediocre. And the final sequence lacks desired impact due to its sanctimonious tone.

What works in the film are the light sequences and the middle portions. There is also one good sequence involving Sai Dharam Tej and his father's character (played by Posani) that stresses about the fact that youngsters know very well about themselves how to overcome the failures and break-ups.

'Chitralahari' doesn't completely engage us but again it is a lot better film among Sai Dharam's recent movies.

Sai Dharam Tej has put on weight, has developed thick bearded to look different from his usual style. He is neat in this character and has played it well. Of the two heroines, it is Nivetha Pethuraj who steals the show. Kalyani is just okay. Posani's role is interesting. Brahmaji's role is not convincing. Vennela Kishore and Sunil have done their part well.

Though tunes sound like some of his old tunes, yet Devi Sri Prasad manages to hold us with them. Two songs - "Prema Vennela" and "Parugu Parugu" are catchy, while "Prayathname" is situational. Cinematography is bright. Karthik Ghattamaneni captured visuals of Hyderabad metro rail commuting and IT corridor well. The break-up sequence before interval is shot quite brilliantly. Production values are rich.

Like he had proved in his previous movies, director Kishore Tirumala has once again shines in writing department, especially penning some relatable dialogues. But his screenplay and direction is largely predictable and is filled with thrones.

Bottom-line: 'Chitralahari' is passable drama that works in parts but leaves unsatisfying in the end with its preachy and dragged sequences. But turns out to be better film among Sai Dharam's recent movies.

Chitralahari Review:   After a series of six shocks (Thikka, Winner, Nakshatram, Jawaan, Inttelligent, Tej I Love You), Sai Dharam Tej is making his comeback with Chitralahari, which has hit the theaters today in a very grand manner. Chitralahari is helmed by Kishore Tirumala of Vunnadi Okate Zindagi fame, and the movie has two actresses  Kalyani Priyadarshan and Nivetha Pethuraj. Kishore Tirumala is best known for making emotional romantic movies and   Chitralahari is presenting Sai Dharam Tej in a new avatar. Let’s see the story of Chitralahari.

Story:   Vijay (Sai Dharam Tej) is a mechanical engineer who is looking for a  big break in life.  After getting rejections from various companies, Vijay starts working in  TV shop and falls for Lahari (Kalyani Priyadarshan).  After the entry of Shanthi ( Nivetha Pethuraj ) , vijay starts losing everything- her love and hopes in his life.  Will he catch a break?

Performance:  Sai Dharam Tej has given his top notch performance in the role of  Vijay. He delivered his best. He has done full justice to his role. His scenes with Sunil are truly some of the best in Chitralahari. Sunil gets good role and delivers his best especially in the first half of the movie. He tries the best to get into the skin of his character. Kalyani Priyadarshan, Nivetha Pethuraj looks good.  Nivetha Pethuraj carries  out her role with ease. Posani Krishna Murali is good  in the role of Sai Dharam Tej’s father.  Vennela Kishore is hilarious and he is honest in his performance. Others performed accordingly.

Technical:    Karthik Ghattamaneni’s camera work is outstanding. The artwork is also superb. Devi Sri Prasad’ music is good but the background score is superb. Editing is fine. The story of Chitralahari is simple but interesting.  The dialogues are meaningful. Coming on the work of Kishore Tirumala, he narrates Chitralahari in a slow manner and presents Sai Dharam Tej in a neat manner.

Analysis:  Sai Dharam Tej has earned a name for himself for attempting different concepts or scripts. He is introduced in simple manner but the later he stuns. Sai Dharam Tej’ excellent performance and screen presence glues the audiences to the screens. Plus points of Chitralahari are the presence of Sai Dharam Tej, Posani Murali Krishna and Vennela Kisrore, Kishore Tirumala ’s direction and DSP’s music.

Chitralahari is a film which needs to click at any cost as Sai Dharam Tej is going through a rough patch in his career. Directed by Kishore Thirumala, this film has hit the screens today. Let’s see whether Tej gets his much needed hit or not.

Vijay(Sai Dharam Tej) is an engineering graduate who develops an app and keeps approaching various companies. But to his bad luck, he gets rejected most of the time. Left with no choice, he starts working at a TV shop and falls in love with Lahari(Kalyani Priyadarshan). But things change with the entry of Shanti(Nivetha Pehturaj) as Vijay loses his love and hope in life. Rest of the story is as to how Vijay gets back on his feet and proves that he is not a loser and becomes successful in life.

Plus Points:

Sai Dharam suits the loser’s role in a superb manner. He has caught the emotions of the character perfectly and drives the film through his expressions. His performance in all the scenes with his father Posani is very good and Tej showcases moving emotions during this time.

Kalyani Priyadarshan is just about okay as the confused lover. But Nivetha Pehturaj gets a meaty role and is superb in her serious character. Right from her expressions to her body language, she suited the role of a corporate head perfectly.

Posani is amazing as Tej’s dad and his character are relatable to every middle-class parent in the society. Like always, Vennela Kishore was hilarious in his role as an English speaking Tamil guy. Wish he had more screen presence.

Sunil gets a good role and was okay in the first half. There are many situations in the film where the youth who are struggling in life will connect to. Brahmaji was efficient as the crooked boss. Dialogues need a special mention as they run the show most of the time.

Minus Points:

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the pace. Things take forever to come to the actual point. Also, the proceedings have a dejavu kind of a feel as such emotions and break up in love stories have been showcased in many films previously.

The climax of the film is not that gripping and could have been better as things have been wrapped up in a hasty manner. Kalyani and her role are not convincing as her character lacks clarity in many areas.

There is not much of comedy and entertainment in the film as it runs on a serious note. Though the emotions work well, somehow the spark in the proceedings are missing.

Technical Aspects:

Production values of the film are decent as the film has been wrapped up on a simple and neat note. Music by DSP is disappointing as some good songs would have made a world of difference to this film. Editing is crisp and so were the dialogues which had a lot of depth. Kalyani Priyadarshan has been dressed in a bad manner as she looks old school in most of the screens.

Coming to the director Kishore Thirumala, he has done just an okay job with the film. His strength is dialogues and emotions and he has executed them well here. But you always get a feeling that the film misses that spark either in the narration or screenplay which could have lifted the proceedings to another level. He narrates the film in a slow manner and does not showcase anything new but presents Sai Dharam Tej in a neatly.

On the whole, Chitralahari is the emotional story of an underdog with some decent moments in both the halves. But the slow pace and serious tone of the film may not be liked by a section of the audience who come expecting entertainment. Because of this, the box office prospects of the film will also be tested. Having said that, the film is way better than Tej’s previous duds and has some feel-good moments which are quite relatable to the youth. Finally, the film can easily be given a shot once but just keep your expectations in check.

After a series of flops Mega hero Sai Dharam Tej has come up with an interesting story with the title ‘Chitralahari’. Ever since the makers unveiled the first look and teaser of Chitralahari, it caught up with a good buzz around. After the release of Chitralahari’s theatrical teaser, the pre-release buzz nearly doubled. As this movie hit the screens today, here is the full review.

Chitralahari story-line:

As expected Chitralahari is the story of a youngster who is seen struggling with his failures. Longing for the success in his life the youngster faces many barriers. This is shown in a relatable manner in this movie.

Sai Dharam Tej plays Vijay, who is longing for success in his life. Vijay happens to be an underdog who invents a device which could help save people’s lives. But, as success doesn’t creep in easily he is not taken seriously. Vijay has his father’s unconditional love and support.

Vijay falls for a girl named Lahari(role played by Kalyani Priyadarshi). Lahari gets swayed by the words of others and keep targeting Vijay for his failures. Sweccha (Nivetha Pethuraj) is Lahari’s childhood friend, who is too judgemental.

What happens to Vijay’s life and how Sweccha becomes one of the problems to Vijay, how Vijay succeeds in his life is the rest of the story.

Roles and Performances:

Sai Dharam Tej, like in the movie finally hits the nail on the head with Chitralahari. His role as Vijay is not only relatable, but also impressive. Sai Dharam Tej and his new looks are apt for the role. He has delivered a commendable job as a youngster who carries that zest to win as an individual.

Sunil’s role is complementary and his role brings out some of the best scenes in the movie.

Heroines Kalyani Priyadarshi and Nivetha Pethuraj were good. The actresses had perfection in playing their respective roles. A total justification for their roles.

Other actors Posani Krishna Murali, Nassar and the rest of them justified their roles perfectly.

Technical Aspects:

The camera work was good in Chitralahari. Though the cinematography is good, it doesn’t give a fresh feel in the movie. The frames and lighting seem to be routine. Editing would have been better too. There was a drag in the narration here and there.

Director Kishore Tirumala has given a good movie with all the elements to serve to all sectional audience. The roles were well-written. But, some characters appeared half-baked.

Final Verdict:

Chitalahari is the story of an underdog named Vijay. His role is quite relatable with some really entertaining scenes. This story is everyone’s story. Sai Dharam Tej has succeeded in hitting back strongly. Do watch it in the nearest theaters.

Kishore Tirumala is the writer and director of the 2019 Telugu-language comedy drama film Chitralahari, which is produced by Mythri Movie Makers.In addition to Sai Dharam Tej, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Nivetha Pethuraj, supporting actors in the movie include Brahmaji, Posani Krishna Murali, Vennela Kishore, and Sunil. Devi Sri Prasad composed the music, while A. Sreekar Prasad handled the editing and Karthik Ghattamaneni handled the cinematography. The movie opened on April 12, 2019, to a mixed bag of reviews before going on to become a commercial success.

An engineer named Vijay Krishna is regarded as a loser due to his lack of social skills and unfortunate circumstances. Everyone misunderstands and rejects him, with the exception of his father Narayana, who always has his back. Despite this, he is a bright recent graduate who is seeking investors for his app idea, which would assist victims of traffic accidents. Although he is in a relationship with Lahari, he tells her falsehoods about his drinking habits. Whenever he visits a pub, he frequently shares a drink with his writer friend Mike. They address one another as “Glassmates”. Additionally, he only ever states that he is working on a project and never brings up the fact that he works part-time at a TV repair shop. When Vijay pitches his idea, Janardhan, an executive at a company, insults him and says he is unfit to finish the project because people don’t follow the rules. Arrogantly and confidently, Vijay challenges Janardhan in front of his staff. Lahari breaks up with Vijay after learning the truth with the assistance of her friend Swecha, who is extremely antagonistic towards men and who also hears Vijay’s pitch.But Vijay is given a chance by Swecha, who takes him to Mumbai, where he finishes the project. They stay in one of the employees’ homes in Mumbai, where they meet Kishore, who refers to Swecha as “sister” since he believes she has a bad attitude towards men. after they had finished creating and carrying out the project plan. The plan fails again due to Janardhan. Vijay feels unfit for anything and becomes enraged over this. He informs Lahari that it was not her choice to end their relationship before leaving Mumbai after learning that Swecha and Lahari are friends. To finish the project, Vijay arranges and carries out an accident to demonstrate the functionality of his device. He is taken to court following the accident and charged with being careless and irresponsible in order to draw attention to the app. The public prosecutor attacks him with a flurry of accusations. Lahari tells him how much she loves him without conditions during the break. The judge grants him permission to follow his dream when the session reopens.

కథ (Chitram Choodara Movie Story): బాలా (వరుణ్ సందేశ్)ది కొత్తపట్నం. రుక్మిణీ డ్రామా కంపెనీలో ఆర్టిస్ట్. లొకేషన్స్ చూడటానికి ఆ ఊరు వెళ్లిన ఓ మూవీ ప్రొడక్షన్ హౌస్ మేనేజర్ మల్లేశం (శివాజీ రాజా) కంట్లో పడతాడు. తమ కొత్త సినిమాలో హీరో స్నేహితుడి వేషం ఉందని హైదరాబాద్ రమ్మని చెబుతాడు. తన డ్రామా కంపెనీ బ్యాచ్ రంగారావు (కాశీ విశ్వనాథ్), మొద్దు (ధనరాజ్)తో కలిసి వస్తాడు. అయితే... ఆ ముగ్గుర్నీ ప్రొడక్షన్ హౌస్ ఆఫీసులో 90 లక్షల రూపాయలు కొట్టేసిన కేసులో సీఐ సారంగపాణి (రవిబాబు) అరెస్ట్ చేస్తారు.

విశ్లేషణ (Chitram Choodara Review): క్రైమ్... కమర్షియల్ / కంటెంట్ బేస్డ్ కథలకు మాంచి ముడిసరుకు. ప్రతి రోజూ వందల సంఖ్యలో నేరాలు వెలుగులోకి రావడం ప్రజలు చూస్తున్నారు. అటువంటి క్రైమ్ తీసుకుని మూవీ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్ యాడ్ చేస్తే కథలో కామెడీతో పాటు ప్రేక్షకుల్లో కథపై క్యూరియాసిటీ పెరుగుతుంది. అందుకని, రియల్ క్రైమ్స్ బేస్ చేసుకుని సినిమాలు తీసే దర్శకుల సంఖ్య క్రమంగా పెరుగుతోంది. 

మూవీ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌ & డ్రగ్స్ బేస్డ్ కథతో 'భరతనాట్యం' వచ్చింది. థియేటర్లలోకి ఆ సినిమా ఎప్పుడొచ్చింది? ఎప్పుడు వెళ్లింది? అనేది చాలా మందికి తెలియదు. ఈ మధ్య మూవీ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌ & రాబరీ కథతో 'పారిజాత పర్వం' వచ్చింది. సునీల్, శ్రద్ధా దాస్, చైతన్య రావు, హర్ష వల్ల సినిమా గురించి కొందరికి తెలిసింది. కానీ, ఆడలేదు. కనీసం ఆ రెండు సినిమాలతో కూడా 'చిత్రం చూడర'ను కంపేర్ చేయలేం. మరీ నాసిరకం సన్నివేశాలు, ఏమాత్రం పసలేని డైలాగులతో సినిమాను చుట్టేశారు. ఆ రెండు సినిమాల్లో కామెడీ కొంతైనా ఉంటుంది. ఇందులో అదీ లేదు.

'చిత్రం చూడర' మొదలైన అరగంట వరకు సినిమా ఎటు వెళుతుందో అర్థం కాదు. వరుసపెట్టి ఒక్కో పాత్రను పరిచయం చేసుకుంటూ వెళ్లారు దర్శకుడు ఆర్ఎన్ హర్షవర్ధన్. షార్ట్ ఫిలిమ్స్ చేస్తూ షోరీల్స్ పట్టుకుని సినిమా ఆఫీసుల చుట్టూ తిరిగే యువతీ యువకులకు అవకాశాలు రావడం కష్టమైన ఈ రోజుల్లో... నాటకం చూసి హీరో స్నేహితుడి వేషం ఓ మేనేజర్ ఆఫర్ చేశాడనే సీన్ రాసుకున్న దగ్గర మనకు దర్శకుడి ప్రతిభ అర్థమైపోవాలి. నాటకాలు వేసుకునే కుర్రాడిని హైదరాబాద్ పిలిపించి రెంటుకు పెంట్ హౌస్ తీసి ఇచ్చిన సన్నివేశంలో సినిమా అంతా ఎలా ఉంటుందో క్లారిటీకి వచ్చేయాలి. లేదూ ఆ రెండు సన్నివేశాలు కొత్తగా ఉన్నాయని ఫీలైన ప్రేక్షకులు సినిమా చూడటం కంటిన్యూ చేయవచ్చు.

ఆర్ఎన్ హర్షవర్ధన్ రాసిన కథ, స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, మాటల్లో ఆకట్టుకునే అంశం ఒక్కటి లేదు. నాటకం చూసి హీరోతో వేశ్య ప్రేమలో పడటం, బెడ్ మీద ఆ పనిలో ఉన్న సమయంలో పెళ్లి చేసుకోమని అడగటం కొత్తగా ఉంటుందని ఫీలైనట్టు ఉన్నారు. కానీ, ఆ సీన్లు తీసిన తీరు బాలేదు. దర్శకత్వంలో సీరియస్‌నెస్ అసలు కనిపించలేదు. స్టార్టింగ్ టు ఎండింగ్... చప్పగా సాగుతుంది. ప్రతి సీన్, డైలాగ్, ట్విస్టులో సినిమాటిక్ లిబర్టీ తీసుకున్నట్టు కనిపిస్తుంది. హీరో నటుడు కావాలని అనుకోవడం వెనుక కారణం ఏమిటి? నాటకాల్లోకి ఎందుకు వచ్చాడు? హీరోయిన్ వేశ్య వృత్తిలోకి ఎందుకు వచ్చింది? వంటి అంశాలను పైపైన టచ్ చేశారు తప్ప ప్రేక్షకులకు టచ్ అయ్యేలా తీయలేదు.

వరుణ్ సందేశ్ నటనలో కొత్తదనం లేదు. ఆయనకు యాక్టింగ్ చేసేంత స్కోప్ కూడా ఆ క్యారెక్టర్ ఇవ్వలేదు. హీరోయిన్ శీతల్ భట్ నటన గురించి ఎంత తక్కువ మాట్లాడుకుంటే అంత మంచిది. నటనలో ఆమెకు ఏబీసీడీలు కూడా రావు. రవిబాబు, తనికెళ్ల భరణి, రాజా రవీంద్ర, కాశీ విశ్వనాథ్ వంటి సీనియర్ యాక్టర్లను దర్శకుడు సరిగా వాడుకోలేదు. ధనరాజ్, రచ్చ రవితో కామెడీ చేయించడంలోనూ ఫెయిల్ అయ్యారు.

పాత కథతోనూ హిట్టు తీయవచ్చని చెప్పడానికి ఉదాహరణలు ఉన్నాయి. ప్రతి సీన్ ఎంగేజ్ చేసేలా ఉంటే ప్రేక్షకులు చూస్తారు. రొటీన్ స్టోరీ, స్క్రీన్ ప్లేకు తోడు మరీ నాసిరకం టేకింగ్, డైరెక్షన్ తోడైతే టార్చరే. అది ఈ సినిమా ఇస్తుంది. మూవీ టీమ్ ఒక్క విషయంలో ప్రేక్షకులకు మేలు చేసింది... ఓటీటీలో విడుదల చేయడంతో థియేటర్లకు వెళ్లి టికెట్ కొనే ఖర్చు మిగిలింది. 'చిత్రం చూడర' అన్నారు. అయితే, ఈ సినిమా చూడటం చాలా కష్టం.
