Book Review – Blink by K.L. Slater

blink book review kl slater

Tanya: Blink is fantastic I recommend it… Jean: I also loved Blink by K.L. Slater…..could not put it down! Had to remind myself to “blink” in the last 30% because I couldn’t take my eyes off the page! Lol

It certainly lead me on quite a tangled journey, from present to past, to present again, the whole way through. There are quite a few key characters that appear consistently from beginning to end (but it’s not hard to keep track of who they are, as they all have very specific personalities), and almost every single one was a suspect (in my mind, anyway). That said, their personalities were mostly acerbic, and suspicious, so it was easy for me to second guess the intentions of every single one of ’em.

So what’s it about?

Toni, grieving over her military husband’s recent death, overwrought with his medical bills, is forced to sell her home, and move near her mother’s home, into a low income housing area with her young 8 year old daughter, leaving their previously happy lives behind.

At thirty-five years old I needed to be able support myself and my daughter. I needed to find the person I used to be, the woman who had plans and goals, and who had built a successful career, juggling all the usual responsibilities – a husband, a home and a child. It wasn’t such a big ask, was it?

Despite that, her daughter is quite well adjusted, but Toni’s recent pill-addiction is beginning to cause turmoil in their new lives together.

I was determined to manage without that little brown bottle full of calm, which I knew was a sure-fire road to ruin. I had to make a stand against popping the pills right now. Otherwise, where would it stop?

Couple that with both having to adjust to a new job, and a new school, and a new community, and we’ve got a very mentally unstable foundation.

Her usually happy daughter is becoming more and more withdrawn and temperamental, and when strange things happen in their home, Toni wonders if her mind is playing tricks on her… or if someone else is. And in the process of their new lives together, her daughter goes missing.

They say, ‘Whatever happens, you must never lose hope.’ But it is too late for such cautionary words because hope has already gone . It has completely gone. This truly feels like the worst time. But it soon becomes apparent that you are so, so wrong. For one day very soon, you will wake up to the realisation that the horror has only just begun.

And anyone and everyone is a suspect. Why? ‘Cause so many of them were creepy, or volatile, or manipulative. Rude, or weird. Mostly all of it.

I was baffled by how the main character of this story (the mother who’s young daughter disappeared without a trace) continued to meet such confrontational and/or mentally unstable people. From her various neighbors,

‘My fault, sorry.’ The head and shoulders of a tall, skinny young man appeared over the hedge. He grinned, revealing blackened teeth. ‘She wanted to see the new puppy.’ The oldest trick in the book, which every parent in the country warned their kids against.

…to her coworkers,

‘I’ll get you back for this,’ she muttered, too low for anyone else to hear. ‘I’ll f**king teach you not to mess with me.’ And then she was gone, leaving the glass door shuddering behind her.

to her daughter’s new teacher, everyone seemed incredibly shady. And that happens, I suppose. You have all kinds of people in the world. But for a seemingly friendly woman that tries not to step on any toes, still grieving the death of her military husband, raising a sweet daughter, I couldn’t understand how she was consistently treated with so much animosity (subtle and not-so-subtle threats) from complete strangers.

That said, a part of her journey was her struggle with prescription pills (so perhaps, through her altered mind state, her actions caused such reactions?)

So while this story is well written, I just found it a little too convenient in regards to the characters truly being so out of the ordinary. Perhaps a “tactic” by the author, to create so much havoc and strangeness amongst her characters, shining the light on them all, as “cagey”.

No matter. ‘Cause it DID keep me guessing, and at one point, I guessed right, but there was more to that reveal.

And there were TWO twists. BIG. HUGE. TWISTS. One was the obvious “ this is the bad guy!! ” twist that you knew was coming (but had no idea who it would be – or maybe you had an idea, like I did. And I was right!! But there was SO MUCH MORE to it than that, so in essence, I had no idea what was going on. LOL!!

But the “killer twist” (at least in my opinion) was a very clever character reveal that had me completely floored. I was so sure I knew what was going on, and wasn’t even looking for much more on “that” (I was assuming… stuff ). The author played the whole “look over here” magic trick on me (that blurb certainly helped steer my “ assumptions “), and BAM! WHAT?!!! NO. WAY. YAY!!! I love when that happens!

Overall, I enjoyed it. And while I did find some things that gave the story momentum… a little over-the-top, I went with it all, for the most part.

But, it’s the final main reveal that was so over-the-top crazy for me that it almost became… lackluster. Isn’t that weird when that happens? When it’s so outrageous, that you’re all… so….  WHAT ???? No. COME ON. No. REALLY? NO. And it’s the ending that kind of broke the whole reveal-thrill, for me. Some might love it though.

That said, I will admit, I didn’t see it coming at all. TWO BIG twists (along with a few mini twists all the way through, that had interesting reveals too), but the two big ones? I certainly didn’t see them coming.

3.5 stars <— 4 easy stars the whole way through for the most part (it’s an easy “guilty-pleasure” read, that’s right up my alley), but that ending just didn’t do it for me.

blink book review kl slater

Sorry you didn’t like it more Maryse! I get where you’re coming from with the ending though. Just having all those suspects made it good for me, but yeah, why was she surrounded by all those creepers?

Pat

I figured it was **** and that *spoiler*. The *spoiler* *spoiler*? Really?! It seemed like a convoluted ending to me.

Bekki Johnson

I have never done this before, and I have read ALOT of books. I loved this book. Especially the ending. I did NOT see that coming! I will definitely be reading more of K.L. Slater’s books!! I love that the book I just finished, Blink, has Safe With Me in the same book. On to next book. Thank you!!

Maryse

YAY Bekki!!!! 😀 I’m thrilled you LOVED it (and that you came back to let us know)!!! I haven’t read Safe With Me yet so let us know what you think of it.

Kelly Barber

Best book I’ve read in a long time! I COULD NOT stop reading it! Loved the twists and turns! I will definitely read more of this author’s books!

#BlogTour – Review: ‘Blink’ by K.L. Slater (@KLSlater; @Bookouture) #Nottingham #144Books

blink book review kl slater

It’s my absolute pleasure to be one of the next blog tour stops for the superb new book by K.L.Slater, Blink.

33232027

Needing to earn money to pave their way, Toni takes on a part time job at an Estate Agents, a job she is far too qualified for but after a long gap in her work history she is still nervous about starting again. And with Evie struggling to adjust to her new surroundings and refusing to go to school, Toni is pushed to the edge, forcing her to turn to the wrong source for relief from her pain.

Harriet Watson is a Teaching Assistant at Evie’s school. She can see the impact that Toni’s grief is having upon the child and she is determined to step in and help. She has a plan. One which will help both Evie and Toni, if only she can get Toni to listen.

And then the unthinkable happens.

Evie has gone missing.

With no CCTV, no witnesses and no evidence at the scene it seems almost impossible that Toni will see her daughter again. But three years on, wracked with guilt over the part she played in her daughter’s disappearance, Toni still believes that Evie is alive. But she is trapped in her own world, and there is nobody around who can hear her cries, so just how can she save her daughter?

Wow. What a book. You could tell with ‘ Safe With Me ‘ that KL Slater is very accomplished at creating tension and writing a brilliant psychological thriller. She has a knack of creating characters who elicit both sympathy and concern, who are teetering on the brink of being completely unbalanced and yet still managing to function in society as seemingly normal people. Up to a point. And there is no finer example of it than here in this book. If you loved ‘ Safe with Me ‘, you are going to adore ‘ Blink ‘.

There is absolutely no doubt about it, from the moment I saw the first reviews come in, I was excited to start reading this one and once I started I couldn’t stop. I devoured it. Chomped away chapter by chapter until I had hoofed the whole damned lot and you know what? It left me hungry for more. If this was pudding (can you tell I’m on a diet – all the food analogies) this would be my favourite. Tiramisu. Rich in plot devices, decadent styling, later upon layer of deliciousness and 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

There are several points of view used throughout the book to great effect. The majority of the story is told by Toni, set three years ago in the weeks leading up to Evie’s disappearance. We also hear from Harriet Watson whose interest in the mother and daughter seems far from wholesome. There are a few other minor characters who take centre stage at varying points and the action moves between them seamlessly. And there is one very clever device used which gives clarity to the books title and is a really interesting and little used concept, but here serves to keep tension and interest high.

But oh my word, the plot. I just can’t even begin to tell you how well this story worked. I mean I really can’t because if I do I know I will end up giving up spoilers and this is a story which deserves to be read completely blind. I could wax lyrical all day about it but… Oh just do yourself a favour and read it. You won’t regret it.

KL Slater has woven a story which is so simple and yet so complex, so obvious and yet so completely surprising  that you’ll be left questioning whether you are certain the sky is really blue. She uses a kind of literary sleight of hand which is worthy of the greatest magician. Even Derren Brown would be impressed. Just brilliant.

An absolutely stonking 5 stars from me.

“What if the person you love most in the world was in terrible danger … because of you? Three years ago,  Toni’s  five-year-old daughter  Evie  disappeared after leaving school. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace.  But Toni believes her daughter is alive. And as she begins to silently piece together her memories, the full story of the past begins to reveal itself, and a devastating truth. Toni’s mind is trapped in a world of silence, her only chance to save herself is to manage the impossible. She must find a way to make herself heard. She must find her daughter.  A compelling, gripping thriller with a breathtaking twist that will keep you awake until the early hours. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Behind Closed Doors and The Sister.  “

I am absolutely delighted to welcome you to my stop on the  Blink blog tour.   Blink is the second psychological thriller from author K.L. Slater and was published on 16th February by Bookouture.  K.L. Slater is a new author to me so I was full of excitement and apprehension when I first started to read  Blink .  To say I was blown away is a bit of an understatement really…

Recently widowed Toni and her young daughter, Evie are leaving their old life behind and moving to Nottingham.  Toni’s mum lives locally and feels her daughter and granddaughter both need a fresh start.  They have a house, Evie is offered a place at St Saviour’s primary school and Toni manages to find a small part time job in a local estate agents doing what she loves.  But Toni has a secret.  A secret which she believes only she knows about.  But others are watching and they’re watching closely enough to work it out for themselves.  Evie is in danger.  Toni’s secret has made her daughter the centre of someone else’s attention and it’s all Toni’s fault…

Outstandingly good!  This is the first book I’ve read in a while that I’ve really immersed myself in.  I went through so many emotions whilst reading which always makes a book a favourite read for me.  There were times I felt genuine sadness and empathy for Toni, and other times I despised her and wanted to give her a good shake!  The chapters are either set in the present day or three years ago and told from several different perspectives.  The chapters narrated by Evie broke my heart, pure and simple.  K.L. Slater manages to write the 5 year old voice so incredibly well that I was near to tears at times.  I should add that I have a 6 year daughter myself so I could easily picture her speaking in a similar way to Evie and having similar thoughts.

The tagline of this book is no understatement; a gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist you’ll never forget.  It sounds like marketing mumbo jumbo and something you should take with a pinch of salt.  Let me tell you though, the tagline, it’s true.  There is a brilliantly crafted twist which makes this book go from a great read to a ‘fantastic, remember it for some time to come read’.  I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading and had to go back and re-read the section again.  It happens so subtly, so beautifully that you almost miss it…only to realise shortly afterwards what is going on.  Superb writing!

Would I recommend this book?  Of course I would.  It’s a completely mesmerising tale which I devoured from it’s shocking buzzing start to it’s explosive end.  I can’t wait to read more from K.L. Slater.  She’s definitely on my ‘authors to watch’ list now.  The characters make this story; from the repulsive TA, Miss Watson to Bryony, the overbearing, hateful boss to Toni, the barely coping, newly single mother.  All brilliant, all wonderfully written.   Blink gave me goosebumps.

Five out of five stars.

I chose to read and review an eARC of  Blink .  My thanks to Bookouture and K.L. Slater for providing me with a copy.  The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion.

The overall consensus seems to be 5/5 stars. I am obviously behind on my game for not having heard of this title until recently. It will have to make its way into my massive pile at some point. Lovely review ❤

It was just unputdownable!! Such tension, so many emotions, a wonderful writing and the narrative was superb! Just like your review 🙂 xx

I thought this one was phenomenal, I could’ve read it again instantly after I finished it! I am reading After Me by Deborah Coonts right now, I think it’s very good. Another that I cannot put down. I think there are too many good reads, I will never get any housework done! Not a bad thing though.

This sounds fantastic! Great review thanks. Off to download 😀

Tanya: Blink is fantastic I recommend it… Jean: I also loved Blink by K.L. Slater…..could not put it down! Had to remind myself to "blink" in the last 30% because I couldn't take my eyes off the page! Lol. Toni is widowed and decides to move nearer her mother so ...

  9. The K.L. Slater Collection: Blink, The Visitor, Closer
