Caleb Williams' Heisman moment

Thanksgiving weekend vs. Notre Dame

Caleb Williams’ most electric moment of the season came Thanksgiving weekend against Notre Dame. Williams had the spotlight and took advantage with a dazzling 19-yard run where he spun out of a sack, found a running lane and broke a tackle as he weaved his way through a stout Irish defense.

It was one of the few times Williams played in front of a national, primetime audience this season and that performance certainly left an impact on voters.

C.J. Stroud's Heisman moment

C.J. Stroud's Heisman moment

Fourth quarter vs. Penn State

C.J. Stroud’s Heisman moment is difficult because Ohio State either blew everybody out or lost big to Michigan. Still, his performance against Penn State, on the road stands out. In the fourth quarter, Ohio State trailed 21-16 and hadn’t scored a touchdown since the first quarter.

Stroud led Ohio State on two 75-yard touchdown drives and threw a 24-yard touchdown on another 1-play drive after a turnover. The game showed off the fourth-quarter excellence Stroud has had much of the season.

Max Duggan's Heisman moment(s)

Max Duggan's Heisman moment(s)

Two Heisman moments

Max Duggan had two Heisman moments in the stretch run. The first came in November against Baylor. TCU trailed the Bears by eight with less than seven minutes remaining and were without starting receivers Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis and starting running back Kendre Miller, all of whom had been injured. Duggan carried the Frogs, leading a 90-yard touchdown drive, then, after a failed two-point conversion, followed it with a game-winning scoring drive in the final 1:34 that resulted in TCU’s fire drill field goal by Griffin Kell as time expired.

In the Big 12 Championship Game, Duggan showed his toughness in leading the Horned Frogs back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit. The quarterback accounted for 75 of the 80 yards TCU covered in its late fourth-quarter touchdown drive and completed a game-tying two-point conversion pass despite evident pain, blood and exhaustion.

Stetson Bennett's Heisman moment

Stetson Bennett's Heisman moment

First quarter vs. Tennessee

Georgia faced third down from the Tennessee 13-yard line. Bennett dropped back and was pressured, scrambled right and then headed for the pylon, which he reached out for and hit for a touchdown.

Bennett reacted by putting his hands to his head in a phone gesture, taunting all the Tennessee fans who had called him after his number leaked. Georgia went on to win the battle of top-ranked unbeaten.

The case for C.J. Stroud

The case for C.J. Stroud

This is Stroud’s second straight year as a Heisman finalist, something only two other Ohio State players have done, Archie Griffin and Howard Cassady. Stroud’s case comes down to his numbers and he spent the season being the most efficient quarterback in the country.

He leads the country with a quarterback rating of 176.25 and is tied with USC’s Williams for a nation-leading 37 touchdowns. He’s completed 66 percent of his passes while also averaging 9.4 yards per attempt, a mark that is third nationally. Stroud has also led Ohio State back to the College Football Playoff and an 11-1 season.

The case for Max Duggan

The case for Max Duggan

TCU is not in the College Football Playoff without Duggan. He ranked in the top 10 nationally in passer rating and yards per attempt and had 30 touchdown passes with just four interceptions. When the Horned Frogs trailed in games against Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Baylor, Duggan’s poise and production rallied them back for victories.

His toughness proved crucial: he rarely missed a snap despite hits piling up late in the season. In TCU’s lone loss, in the Big 12 championship to Kansas State, Duggan’s gutsy fourth-quarter performance helped erase an 11-point second-half deficit and force overtime.

The case for Stetson Bennett

The case for Stetson Bennett

Is Bennett getting rewarded for being the face of Georgia’s team, and also his remarkable story? Certainly. But is he a deserving candidate on his own merits? There should be no doubt.

Bennett has been the steadying force for an offense that has been great when it needed to be this year. In five games against ranked teams, Georgia has averaged 44 points, with Bennett accounting for 17 touchdowns in those five games. Bennett’s overall numbers are also tamped down by Georgia being so dominant: He has 3,104 passing yards in the first three quarters of games this year, and only 321 combined in all fourth quarters. His overall touchdown numbers (20 passing, 7 running) could also be better except for an unusual amount of passes stopped inside the 5-yard line: Seven of his completions saw the receiver tackled at the 1- or 2-yard line. His scrambling ability has also been key to the Georgia offense, which ranks seventh nationally in yards-per-play.

Detractors will claim it’s the Georgia defense that’s the real reason the team has been so good. Those who have watched this team all season know better that it is truly good on both sides of the ball, and Bennett is the face of the team because he deserves to be.

The 6 plays that defined Caleb Williams' season

USC quarterback Caleb Williams will enter Saturday night’s Heisman Trophy ceremony as the odds-on favorite to win the award.

For good reason.

Williams accounted for 4,447 yards of total offense (4,075 passing, 372 rushing) and 47 touchdowns (37 passing, 10 rushing) and spearheaded one of the best offenses in the country. He was the driving force behind the Trojans’ transformation from a four-win team in 2021 to one that flirted with a College Football Playoff appearance in 2022.

Williams simply elevated everyone around him and made good on all of the hype that surrounded both his arrival to USC and during his recruiting process as a five-star prospect.

Caleb Williams lived up to the hype, outpoints Duggan and Hooker

Caleb Williams lived up to the hype, outpoints Duggan and Hooker

USC quarterback Caleb Williams was the biggest transfer of the offseason, a five-star free agent who landed near Hollywood, raked in splashy NIL deals and symbolized this ever-changing era of college football.

It turns out he was worth all of the hype and then some.

Williams is the 2022 winner of The Athletic’s Heisman straw poll after using a late-season surge to pull away from the field and establish himself as the favorite to take home the most famous individual award in American sports.

TCU quarterback Max Duggan, who didn’t even start the season opener, finished his improbable Heisman campaign at No. 2, with injured Tennessee signal caller Hendon Hooker coming in at No. 3.

The Athletic uses the same voting protocol as that of the actual Heisman: three points for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vote, one point for a third-place vote.

Another winner for Lincoln Riley?

Lincoln Riley can become the sixth head coach of three-plus Heisman winners. Nick Saban and Frank Leahy have coached four, and Pete Carroll (Reggie Bush included), Woody Hayes and Red Blaik have coached three.

Caleb Williams would join Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield in just six years as a head coach for Riley.

Riley can become the second coach to coach a Heisman winner at multiple schools. Tommy Prothro did it at Oregon State (Terry Baker) and UCLA (Gary Beban).

The following is a transcript of the speech USC quarterback Caleb Williams delivered after winning the Heisman Trophy.

First, I’d like to say thank you. Thank you. This is really awesome. This is really awesome to be up here. So first off, I’d like to thank all the Heisman Trust, all the voters, the finalists that sit right here in front of me — C.J. [Stroud], Max [Duggan], Stets [Stetson Bennett]. You guys are unbelievable competitors. And I am so happy to be up here with you all. Knowing Stets from when I went to Georgia on my visits and him being my host, which is kind of funny that I’m up here with him now.

But we’ve all been through this journey these past couple of days together. And I may be standing up here today, but you all get to go to College Football Playoffs.

Guess you can’t win them all.

Caleb Williams wins the Heisman Trophy, cementing his place in USC football lore

After a stellar 2022 campaign, USC quarterback Caleb Williams wins the Heisman Trophy, beating out runner-up Max Duggan, C.J. Stroud and Stetson Bennett.

Dec. 10, 2022

To the men standing behind me. Thank you for your passion for the game. Because kids like me that have dreams and goals of being up here and of being the best started from watching you all, so thank you.

Next, special shout out to my fellow Trojan Matt [Leinart], Cars [Carson Palmer], Mike [Garrett] for always supporting me since I’ve made this journey across the country to USC. But to now be a part of this historic fraternity is truly an honor. It’s something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. While this may be an individual award, I certainly understand that nothing — and absolutely nothing — in this sport, nor life, is done alone.

I would like to thank our athletic director Mike Bohn and his wife, Kim, for being here today. Mike, I appreciate you for always and always making us the best student-athletes possible. My teammates and I greatly appreciate you and all you’ve done for USC.

Big dog, Coach [Lincoln] Riley. We committed to each other on two separate occasions, but with the same dream. As we say, and you’ve heard me say in the locker room, there can never be a great book or a great story without some adversity in it. So since our OU days, we’ve been through a lot. And even the sudden change in field from Norman, Oklahoma, to the University of Southern California, our dreams have not changed. They say you either change your dreams or change your habits, and I damn sure wasn’t going to change my dreams. I’m glad you didn’t change yours either. But we both know the job’s not done.

Mama Riley [Caitlin Riley, Lincoln’s wife], [Riley’s daughters] Sloan, Stella, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your family. And not only that, allowing him to coach me way more than he — he should probably be at home.

when is the heisman presentation 2022

I’d like to thank all my USC brothers. I know we didn’t finish the way we wanted to, but the culture bond that we formed will last forever. As I said, we do still have some unfinished business. A special shout out to this group. To the group that’s here today, the offensive linemen. Stand up big guys, wherever you are. We’re all here to celebrate our accomplishment. This doesn’t happen without each one of you — Bobby [Haskins], Courtland [Ford], [Andrew] Vorhees, Gino [Quinones], Brett [Neilon], Dedi [Justin Dedich], Jonah [Monheim], Mason [Murphy]. Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you to my brotherhood at Gonzaga College High School. Coach Randy Trivers, where you at, big dog? Stand up. Hey, hey.

You had the courage to start a ninth grader in the toughest high school conference in the country. The Gonzaga experience both on and off the field helped to prepare me in more ways than you can imagine. Coach, you may not know this. But the Gonzaga motto that you drilled into us. “men for others,” has helped inspire me to create the Caleb Cares Foundation, which is all about giving back. So thank you, coach. Thank you, Gonzaga.

It is important to surround yourself with good people and a team that you can trust. Special thanks to Mama Judy, Cody and Phil. Now to my mentors, Coach Mar, Coach Russ [Thomas] and Coach Basha. I appreciate you for always holding me accountable as the man and as a football player and always speaking the truth to me, even when I don’t want to hear. You taught me how to be a QB and not play the position of QB. You taught me how to look at myself in the mirror and like the man that’s looking back.

Where does Caleb Williams rank among USC’s eight Heisman Trophy winners?

An attempt at ranking all eight USC Heisman Trophy winners. Where do Caleb Williams, Reggie Bush and O.J. Simpson rank?

And now, to the most important woman in my life. Thank you for always being my mom first. The woman behind the scenes who has a smile on her face and is willing to help others. You’re an inspiration to me in many ways. To the old man over there, my dad, he always walks to the beat of his own drum. Thank you for showing me the way. You instilled a work ethic in me at a young age that I can’t thank you enough for. From the training sessions and the late-night practices, even opening Athletic Republic so my guys and I could go train. You’re always there for me making sacrifices in your life so I can achieve my dreams, which eventually became our dreams. It may seem to go unnoticed and unappreciated, but you mean the world to me. We’re in this together and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

That’s where my journey started. And it’s not the 4-year old kid that loved just going out there and running and tackling somebody and scoring touchdowns. The journey really started when I was 10. And the season ended and I had to turn my equipment in. And there’s one thing that I vividly remember, is telling my dad in the car ride home that this is what I wanted to do for my career. I wanted to be a football player. I wanted to be a quarterback. I loved it. I loved everything about it. Fast forward a couple years later, I’m crying in a hotel room. And many of you have probably seen me cry after a loss. My team and I just lost the national championship and I didn’t get the chance to play. My coach told me I was too small.

That night, a fire ignited in me. That night I decided to play quarterback. And not only be playing quarterback, but to be the best quarterback. I wanted to impact the game. I wanted to share the ball with all my teammates. And if you know me and my dad, very plan-based, we stayed up all night putting together a plan. And a journey slash plan went like this: 5:30 a.m., breakfast club workouts. We also have 6:30 in the p.m. lift, running conditioning, getting bigger, stronger and faster. We had nutritionists, sleep patterns, sports psychologists, coaching experts and learning and playing the game. The more I learned, the more I wanted.

But the path hasn’t always been easy. And this is me speaking to the 11-year-old out there who’s watching right now, who was told you’re too small, like they told me. Go out there, show them how big your heart is. To the seventh grader who was passed over on the team like I was, use that adversity to ignite your passion like I did. To the ninth grader out there who no one believes can make varsity, you can if you believe. To the 10th grader losing in the championship game but had belief that we were gonna come back and win down 20 in the first half. Always believe that there’s one more Hail Mary up your sleeve. And to the college freshman who was fighting for a chance to contribute and get on the field with your brothers, your time is coming, keep going. And if you lose your bid to get to the College Playoffs, know that you will get through it like I did. And like I just learned. Back to work. The job isn’t done.

The early setbacks that I encountered lit a fire, they started my journey. Your journey will be your own. Just keep believing and keep pursuing your goals. If you’re willing to put in the work and surround yourself with positive people, you can achieve anything. I used to write down my goals in a journal and what used to just be words on a piece of paper has me standing here today. So everyone dreams really do come true.

Thank you. Fight On.

Heisman Trophy finalists 2022: C.J. Stroud, Caleb Williams, Stetson Bennett, Max Duggan heading to New York

The 2022 heisman finalists have been announced with four quarterbacks making the cut.

NCAA Football: PAC-12 Football Championship-Southern California at Utah

The finalists for the 2022 Heisman Trophy were revealed on Monday night, and four quarterbacks will head to New York this weekend with the hopes of taking home college football's most prestigious individual award.  Ohio State  quarterback  CJ Stroud ,  USC  quarterback  Caleb Williams , TCU quarterback Max Duggan and Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett are this year's finalists after tremendous efforts.

The Heisman race thinned out over the last month of the season as Williams led the Trojans to the brink of the College Football Playoff prior to their loss to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Part of the reason Williams rose to the top of the pack was the torn ACL that Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker suffered in mid-November, ending the season (and Heisman hopes, apparently) for the dual-threat star.

Let's take a closer look at their respective rÊsumÊs.

Caleb Williams, QB, USC

The Oklahoma transfer has been a superstar in his first season with the Trojans. His 37 touchdown passes are tied for first nationally, along with Ohio State's C.J. Stroud and Houston 's Clayton Tune . He also ranks sixth at 313.5 yards passing per game and added 10 touchdowns on the ground. He was the catalyst for a USC offense that thrived under first-year coach Lincoln Riley, playing particularly well down the stretch. More impressively, Williams had to have that kind of season just to keep the Trojans in national title contention. Without Williams, USC, which won 11 games, wouldn't have been anywhere close to a Pac-12 title, much less a playoff spot. As far as value to his team goes, Williams has a strong case.

C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State

Stroud was a Heisman finalist last year after a fantastic debut, and he followed that up with another Heisman-caliber year. Though he shares the lead for most touchdown passes, and his yards per game numbers aren't as good as Williams', he edges the USC signal-caller with an impressive 9.4 yards per attempt. In some ways, it feels as though Stroud's high-level production gets taken for granted because it's so workmanlike (and because of the absurd skill around him). And in a wide-open race, there are simply other players who finished stronger. Still, it's hard to imagine a gathering of college football's finest players and Stroud not being in attendance.

Max Duggan , QB, TCU

Duggan didn't even open the season as TCU's starter, but he stepped in for Chandler Morris in Week 1 and led the Horned Frogs to an undefeated regular season and a No. 3 seed in the CFP. He threw for 3,321 yards and scored 36 touchdowns on the season. Some voters place value as the most important attribute when casting their ballots, and Duggan's value to the Horned Frogs can't be denied. If his offense needs a play, Duggan finds a way.

Stetson Bennett , QB, Georgia

Bennett was given the keys to Georgia's offense from the moment the season began. He drove that bus all the way to the College Football Playoff as the No. 1 seed with a de facto home semifinal game in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. He threw for 3,425 yards and 20 touchdowns and added 184 yards and seven touchdowns. Bennett doesn't have the stats as the other finalists, but what he brings to the reigning national champions is invaluable.

The 2022 Heisman Trophy ceremony is set for Saturday, Dec. 10. The presentation will be live streamed on fuboTV (free trial) .

At a time when Heisman Trophy winners are usually on their way to being first-round picks in the NFL draft, Stetson Bennett is a contender from another era of college football.

The Georgia quarterback already has a national championship ring and this season he has stepped up his own play in an offense that has entrusted him with more responsibility.

At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Bennett is no lock to be drafted at all even though he is a bona fide college football star.

Southern California’s Caleb Williams is the favorite to win the award Saturday night.

Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud is a finalist for the second straight year for the playoff-bound and fourth-ranked Buckeyes, who face Bennett and the top-ranked Bulldogs on Dec. 31 in the Peach Bowl.

TCU’s Max Duggan had a breakout senior season, leading the surprising, third-ranked Horned Frogs to the College Football Playoff against No. 2 Michigan.

Williams and Stroud fit the modern mold of Heisman contenders.

Thirteen of the last 14 Heisman winners to enter the NFL have been selected in the first round, including all 11 quarterbacks. That does not include last year’s winner, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who is expected to be a first-rounder if he enters the next draft.

Williams has one more year left of college football before becoming draft eligible and is already drawing comparisons to Chiefs’ star Patrick Mahomes.

Stroud is considered a likely first-round pick in April’s draft. Maybe the first quarterback taken. Maybe No. 1 overall, though he hasn’t said for sure this will be his final season at Ohio State.

Duggan is a former four-star recruit with the size (6-foot-2, 210-pounds) and athleticism to be an NFL prospect, too. He also has not decided if he will return for another season of college football.

Bennett conjures up memories of Heisman winners such as Oklahoma’s Jason White in 2003 or Florida’s Danny Wuerffel in 1996: Highly productive college passers on national title contending teams, but not big-time pro prospects.

When is the Heisman Trophy ceremony?

The Heisman Trophy ceremony is set for 7 p.m. (8 p.m. ET) on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Will it be live streamed?

The game will be live streamed on fuboTV, which offers a free trial. The most basic of plans is the “fubo standard” package, which comprises 121-plus channels for $69.99 per month. Like all cord-cutting alternatives, there are plenty of options, especially for sports. It comes with more than 1,000 hours of cloud-based DVR, and up to 10 screens at once.

What TV channel will broadcast the show?

The ceremony will be broadcast on ESPN.

Where is Caleb Williams from?

The 20-year-old Williams was born and raised in the nation’s capital.

Williams attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. from 2017 to 2021, earning a number of awards and accolades for the Eagles. He was a five-star recruit and the top quarterback prospect in his graduating class.

When did caleb williams transfer to usc.

Before moving to Southern California, Williams spent his freshman season at the University of Oklahoma.

He began the 2021 season as Spencer Rattler’s backup, but was elevated to the starting role midway through the Sooners’ sixth game.

Williams finished his freshman season with seven starts in 11 appearances, going 5-2 with 1,912 passing yards, 27 total touchdowns (21 passing, six rushing) and four interceptions.

When former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley accepted the same job with the Trojans, Williams followed the man who recruited him. He officially committed to USC on Feb. 1, 2022 after entering the transfer portal on Jan. 3, 2022.

What are Caleb Williams’ stats this season?

After being named the starter in August, Williams has put together a dominant season.

Through 12 starts before Friday, he has 3,712 passing yards, 44 total touchdowns (34 passing, 10 rushing) and just three interceptions.

USC is 11-1 in his starts, with the only loss coming to Utah on Oct. 15 despite Williams’ five touchdown passes and zero interceptions.

Will Caleb Williams win the Heisman Trophy?

Entering championship weekend, Williams is expected to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy. He would be the first Trojan since Reggie Bush in 2005 to win it, though Bush was forced to vacate the award because of NCAA violations. Before that, Matt Leinart won the Heisman in 2004 for USC.

All season long it was a debate between Williams, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker . But the narrative shifted after Hooker suffered a torn ACL on Nov. 19 and Stroud’s Buckeyes were blown out by Michigan, paving the way for Williams.

Other contenders include Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett and TCU quarterback Max Duggan.

The 2022 Heisman Trophy presentation is set for Saturday, Dec. 10.

Is Caleb Williams draft eligible?

No, not yet.

According to NFL rules, players are not draft eligible until they are three years removed from high school graduation. Williams graduated from high school in the spring of 2021, making him a true sophomore this season.

When can Caleb Williams go to the NFL?

Williams will be eligible to go pro after the 2023 season, making him eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft. If he keeps up this level of play, teams across the NFL will be lining up for his services that spring.

Heisman Watch 2022: Leading contenders, current odds

A new name has snuck into the 2022 Heisman Trophy race.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett debuts as the No. 5 candidate after his Week 11 performance. Bennett threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns, helping Georgia secure the 45-19 win over Mississippi State and a spot in the SEC Championship .

With C.J. Stroud ( Ohio State ), Hendon Hooker ( Tennessee ), Drake Maye ( North Carolina ) and Caleb Williams ( USC ) all having impressive showings over the weekend, the top four rankings stayed the same.

Let's get to this week's Heisman standings, top Heisman moments of the week and what to watch for in this weekend's action.

Voting methodology: Twelve voters ranked their top five candidates, with five points for a first-place vote down to one point for a fifth-place vote.

Top five candidates

1. c.j. stroud, qb, ohio state.

Total points: 54 (first-place votes: 8)

Week 11 notables: Stroud's lead in this year's Heisman race took a hit with his performance in Week 10 against Northwestern , in which he threw for just 76 yards in a blustery wind. On Saturday against the Indiana , he proved he was back to his dominant play. He threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns to lift the Buckeyes to a 56-14 victory. Thanks to his hefty touchdown performance, Stroud is back tied with Maye for most in the FBS (34) after losing the lead last week.

Heisman odds: +120

2. Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee

Total points: 49 (first-place votes: 4)

Week 11 notables: Following the loss to Georgia, Hooker slipped from the No. 1 spot to No. 2. His 195-yard game with zero touchdowns and one interception caused worry. This week, he bounced back against Missouri to solidify his standing in second place and lead the Volunteers to a 66-24 Senior Day win. He threw for 355 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. With South Carolina and Vanderbilt , respectively, left in the regular season, Hooker can continue to make his case over the next two weeks. He has thrown for 2,888 yards and rushed for 405 yards this season.

Heisman odds: +375

3. Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Total points: 29 (first-place votes: 0)

Week 11 notables: Maye can't be stopped. And Saturday's performance proved that. Against Wake Forest, he threw for an eye-popping 448 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed on the ground, running for 71 yards and a touchdown. His 3,412 passing yards put him third in the nation, and his 34 touchdowns tie him with Stroud for the most. In just his redshirt freshman season, Maye has stepped up as an offensive leader for UNC in a big way. Maye will look to expand on UNC's six-game win streak against Georgia Tech this weekend.

Heisman odds: +600

4. Caleb Williams, QB, USC

Total points: 24 (first-place votes: 0)

Week 11 notables: Since losing to Utah, Williams and the Trojans keep rolling. Against Colorado, Williams threw for 268 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also tacked on two rushing touchdowns. After throwing an interception at the end of the second quarter, he now stands tied for fourth in the nation with two on the season, and his 31 passing touchdowns put him in third. This weekend, Williams will look to prove why this is a Heisman-worthy campaign when the Trojans and UCLA Bruins meet for the rivalry's 92nd time.

Heisman odds: +1000

5. Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia

Total points: 11 (first-place votes: 0)

Week 11 notables: His 2,895 yards on the season stand 13th in the FBS, and his 84.9 QBR puts him at seventh in FBS. He might not have head-turning numbers, but Bennett earned his spot because of his toughness in big games. He had standout performances against Georgia's two ranked opponents this season in then-No. 11 Oregon and then-No. 1 Tennessee. Against the Ducks, he threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns with a 97.4 QBR. Against the Volunteers, Bennett threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns with a 97.9 QBR.

Heisman odds: +1200

Others receiving votes (total points in parentheses): Blake Corum , Michigan (9), Michael Penix Jr. , Washington (2), Max Duggan , TCU (1), Bryce Young , Alabama (1)

Flashback to ...

C.J. Stroud can be the first Buckeye to win the Heisman since 2006. Caleb Williams can be the first Trojan since 2004. Stetson Bennett can be the first Bulldog since 1982. No one from Tennessee or UNC has won the Heisman, but Hendon Hooker and Drake Maye's fathers (Alan Hooker and Mark Maye) were big-time quarterbacks in the '80s.

We'll take you back to those times and see which player has a case to make history.

The last time a Buckeye won the Heisman:

The last time a player from Ohio State won a Heisman Trophy (Troy Smith, 2006), we were in the early stages of social media becoming mainstream. MySpace was just a few years old, and Facebook began picking up steam in its second year. Look at us now.

Stroud is the leader of the second-highest-scoring offense in all of FBS, carrying Ohio State's offense with his 2,750 passing yards, 34 touchdowns (tied for most in FBS) and just four interceptions. His 188.2 passer efficiency rating is also the highest in college football. If he can lead the Buckeyes to wins over Michigan, essentially a play-in game for the Big Ten championship, and then the Big Ten championship, he'll have the rĂŠsumĂŠ to win it. -- Harry Lyles Jr.

The last time a Trojan won the Heisman:

The last time USC had a Heisman winner was in 2005, when Reggie Bush kept us stunned weekly with his talent. You can now go back and watch those highlights, thanks to the YouTube domain being registered in February 2005 and the first video, "Me at the zoo," uploaded two months later on April 23.

Reggie Bush was one of the best to ever do it at USC ⚡️ pic.twitter.com/5UCpil5pCF — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) March 29, 2020

Williams' Heisman credentials are clear. He's the focal point of USC's offense, which is third highest in scoring in FBS. He currently sits at 10th in the nation in passing yards with 3,010, along with 31 touchdowns and just two interceptions, leading the resurgence of a USC program that hasn't seemed like itself since Bush won his Heisman. -- Lyles

The last time a Bulldog won the Heisman:

Every stroll around Athens has always been a constant reminder of the last time a Dawg brought the Heisman Trophy back to UGA, thanks to Herschel Walker statues, paintings, a Walker-themed bulldog sculpture and, this fall, election signs. It was 1982, and the fight for king of the megaplex (wait, did megaplexes even exist yet?) was between "E.T: the Extra-Terrestrial," "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Rocky III."

A year ago, the cries from the UGA faithful were that Bennett's ascension to starting QB was a great story but wasn't good enough to lead the Dawgs to the promised land as Walker did in 1980. Then he did, outdueling 2021 Heisman winner Bryce Young. This year his team is once again No. 1, and the kid with the country club name has quietly thrown for more yards than Young, Hooker and Stroud. The best offensive player on the best team is always worth many Heisman bonus points. -- Ryan McGee

The last time a Volunteer won the Heisman:

The last time a Tennessee player won the Heisman was, well, never, though it has had four runner-up finishers. Instead, let's throw it back to when Hooker's father, Alan, was at North Carolina A&T on his way to becoming a bona fide HBCU legend. It was 1986, and the Aggies won their first outright MEAC title while Whitney Houston's debut album topped the charts, Van Halen became Van Hagar and the planet's No. 1 movie was the original "Top Gun."

Hooker had his Heisman moment -- actually a whole night of them -- as he led Tennessee to its first win over Bama since he was in elementary school. Thanks to the Big Orange's hyper-speed offense, he has posted prolific passing numbers against every team not named Georgia. Seeing as how UGA has also stonewalled Bo Nix , Anthony Richardson and Will Rogers , there's no shame in that. -- McGee

The last time a Tar Heel won the Heisman:

UNC also has never had a Heisman winner nor a legitimate candidate since Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice finished second in 1948 and '49. So, we rewind to 1987, when Maye's dad, Mark, slung it for the Tar Heels. He was a two-year starter, throwing for 3,000 yards (no easy task in those run-first days) and co-captain in '87. One month after he threw and ran for TDs in the Aloha Bowl, Genesis christened the just-opened Dean Dome with a stop during their hot-ticket Invisible Touch Tour.

Maye's Heisman push began in shadows but has now moved into November overdrive, posting big stats even as the Heels have had to claw for wins seemingly every weekend. He is tied for first in the nation in TD passes (34) and points responsible for (236). He's third in passing efficiency and passing yards, fifth in completion percentage and sixth in yards per pass attempt. He's the only QB in the top 10 on all those lists. -- McGee

Top Heisman moments this past week

1. With just over two minutes left in the first half, Caleb Williams helps USC score its third touchdown of the half with this 32-yard dart leading Brenden Rice to the end zone.

2. Not only did Stetson Bennett decide to take it to the end zone by himself, but he also managed to juke a defender along the way for Georgia's second touchdown.

3. Instead of waiting to throw it, Hendon Hooker shows off his rushing ability to take it 14 yards for the touchdown.

Heisman game of the week

No. 7 USC at No. 16 UCLA (Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, Fox)

The Battle of Los Angeles has been restored. For the first time since 2014, the Bruins and the Trojans will meet as top-25-ranked opponents. If Williams wants to make a legitimate case for why he should be this year's Heisman Trophy winner, this matchup will be the one to do it. So far this season, Williams is tied for third in the FBS in touchdowns (31), fourth in interceptions (two) and sixth in QBR (84.9). Williams and the Trojans' only loss came to their only ranked opponent in then-No. 20 Utah . Against the Utes, Williams had a Heisman-worthy performance throwing for 381 yards and five touchdowns. How will Williams fare in this battle, and can he finally lead his team to its first top-25 win?

Final 2022 Heisman Trophy voting, points results

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett finished fourth in the 2022 Heisman Trophy voting. Bennett, a former walk-on, helped Georgia win a national championship last season and is a big reason why Georgia won the 2022 SEC championship.

Bennett did not have the most impressive stats of the Heisman finalists, but he is the only finalist with a team that remains undefeated. Bennett will face Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, who finished third in the voting, in a few weeks in the College Football Playoff.

Here’s the final voting tally, which includes the total points each player received, for the Heisman Trophy:

College football QB stock watch: Heisman favorites, first-year starters, competitions

Michael Cohen

It's undeniably the most important position on the football field. All eyes center around the quarterback position in college football, as it's no surprise that seven of the last eight Heisman Trophy winners have played QB.

With the departure of Caleb Williams , Jayden Daniels , Drake Maye , Michael Penix Jr. , J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix and more to the NFL, there will be a new crop of signal-callers who will be looked upon as the next stars in college football. Who is in that next group of stars? Will they live up to their preseason billing? And finally, who are the first-year starters under center who could make an impact this season?

FOX Sports college football experts Michael Cohen and RJ Young take a look at the quarterback position heading into the 2024 college football season and examine the next group of standout QBs, as well as some intriguing QB battles that could continue into the summer and fall.

Carson Beck , Quinn Ewers and Dillon Gabriel have the best Heisman odds heading into the 2024 season. Who is one player outside that trio that you could see taking home college football's most pretentious individual award this season?

Michael Cohen: Given that he was briefly benched early in the season, it's easy to forget that Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe finished sixth in last year's Heisman Trophy voting behind Daniels ( LSU ), Penix Jr. (Washington), Nix (Oregon), Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State) and Jordan Travis (Florida State). He was 12 votes from catching Travis for fifth place and more than 40 votes ahead of Ollie Gordon (Oklahoma State) in seventh place. None of the players ahead of Milroe will be playing college football this fall.

As a first-year starter, Milroe completed 187 of 284 passes (65.8%) for 2,834 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran the ball 161 times for 531 yards and a team-high 12 rushing scores to entrench himself as the sport's second-best dual-threat quarterback behind Daniels. His average of 6.2 yards per carry on designed rushing attempts ranked tied for fourth nationally among quarterbacks from the Power 5 conferences. Milroe guided the Crimson Tide to an upset of Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and pushed eventual national champion Michigan to overtime in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

The biggest question surrounding Milroe's potential Heisman Trophy candidacy is how well he meshes with the new offensive system installed by head coach Kalen DeBoer, who came from Washington to replace the legendary Nick Saban in January. DeBoer's longtime offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, bolted for a chance to run the Seattle Seahawks ' offense rather than remain in the same role at Alabama. Former Washington tight ends coach Nick Sheridan, who previously worked with DeBoer at Indiana, has been elevated to offensive coordinator and will work closely with Milroe.

RJ Young: Travis Hunter feels like a great candidate for the Heisman, especially if Colorado plays well this season. He enters this season as one of three players — along with Ewers — who are featured on the cover of EA Sports' "College Football 25." He is one of the most popular players in the sport and could be the first player selected in the NFL Draft next year.

His production last season was great — 57 catches for 721 yards along with three picks — but his stamina was incredible. Hunter played more than 100 snaps in most games last year for the Buffs. Toward the end of the season, that mileage began to show, especially against Stanford when he and the secondary allowed Elic Ayomanor to catch 13 passes for 294 yards in an overtime loss.

I realize Shedeur Sanders is likely to get as much, if not more, praise for his play if he plays to his potential in 2024, but I'm interested to find out if Heisman voters still respect a legitimate two-player the way they did Charles Woodson in the 20th century.

Expectations for Ohio State & Colorado this upcoming 2024 season

Expectations for Ohio State & Colorado this upcoming 2024 season

Conversely, who is one quarterback listed among the Heisman favorites that could struggle to live up to the preseason hype in 2024?

RJ: Gabriel feels like the player most likely to get off to a rough start of the three favorites. He is the only one of the three who doesn't return to a team, a staff and an offense he already knows and understands him as their leader. He will also lead Oregon into its first season of Big Ten competition with the expectation in Eugene that the Ducks will not only make the College Football Playoff, but be featured in the Big Ten title game.

I think offensive coordinator Will Stein will get Gabriel sorted with a talented tailback in Noah Whittington and a talented wide out in Evan Stewart. But it wouldn't shock me to see Gabriel spending September learning what he can and cannot do at Oregon this season.

Michael: It seems unlikely that any of the aforementioned candidates — Beck from Georgia, Ewers from Texas and Gabriel from Oregon — will endure significant struggles this season given their respective experience and the caliber of talent around them. All of them can, and probably should, be in contention for the Heisman Trophy as the calendar turns from October to November this fall.

But if there's one player who might endure some growing pains before settling into a high-level groove, Ewers is probably that guy. The easiest place to start is by looking at the sheer volume of production the Longhorns lost at the skill positions from a team that reached the College Football Playoff last season. Ewers' top five receivers are all gone to the NFL: WR Xavier Worthy (1,014 yards, 5 TDs); WR Adonai Mitchell (845 yards, 11 TDs); TE Ja'Tavion Sanders (682 yards and 2 TDs); WR Jordan Whittington (505 yards and 1 TD) and RB Jonathon Brooks (286 yards and 1 TD), who was also the team's leading rusher with 1,139 yards and 10 scores. Head coach Steve Sarkisian filled some of those holes with highly talented players — namely former Alabama wideout Isaiah Bond and former Kentucky wideout Matthew Golden — but it could take time for Ewers and his new receiving corps to find a rhythm.

Which brings us to the next factor that could influence Ewers' start to the season: the difficulty of Texas' schedule. Not only do the Longhorns have an early non-conference trip to Michigan, which should lay claim to one of the best defenses in the country, but they also face Oklahoma and Georgia within the first seven weeks as new members of the SEC. That's a lot for a retooled offense to handle.

There are several high-profile QBs from the 2023 class who are expected to be first-year starters this season. Which of those prospects do you expect to shine the brightest in 2024??

Michael: The two players who jump out as potential stars are Oklahoma's Jackson Arnold (No. 8 overall, No. 4 QB in 2023) and Kansas State 's Avery Johnson (No. 99 overall, No. 9 QB in 2023) given their respective pedigrees and the flashes they showed in smaller roles last season.

Arnold committed to Oklahoma on Jan. 24, 2022, roughly seven weeks after new head coach Brent Venables arrived from Clemson , where he served as associate head coach and defensive coordinator. It was a major recruiting win for Venables, who plucked Arnold from a Dallas suburb and identified him as the heir to Gabriel's starting spot. Arnold completed 44 of 69 passes (63.8%) for 563 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions behind Gabriel last season, but most of his production boils down to two games: He was 11 of 11 for 114 yards and one touchdown in the season opener against Arkansas State to wow an already expectant fan base, and then he threw for 362 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions while starting for Gabriel in OU's bowl game.

Johnson, meanwhile, is an in-state product from Maize High School in Maize, Kansas, and gave head coach Chris Klieman one of the biggest recruiting wins in program history when he committed on July 5, 2022. He's the 10th-best prospect the Wildcats have signed in the recruiting rankings era, according to 247Sports, trailing only Josh Freeman (2006) at the quarterback position. Klieman worked Johnson into eight games as a true freshman with two starts against TCU and N.C. State. Johnson is a bonafide dual-threat quarterback who threw for 479 yards and five touchdowns while also running for 296 yards and seven touchdowns. He has the potential to be a must-watch player in 2024.

RJ: I think Michael is onto something here with both Johnson and Arnold. Each has the tools to not just make a splash as a starter, but to lead their respective programs to conference titles. What each lacks in experience, they've made up for with maturity and athleticism. Johnson is one of the most talented runners the sport boasts this season with two tailbacks in Dylan Edwards and DJ Giddens who will force teams to choose Johnson to beat them through the air – and he can.

Arnold has one of the sport's most talented arms and he's no slowpoke in a scramble drill either. Between those two, the future of the sport — let alone among new starters at QB — is exciting.

Ohio State, Michigan and USC all have ongoing QB battles heading into the summer. Which one of those QB battles are you most intrigued by?

RJ: Ohio State's QB derby is interesting to me because Ryan Day is going to let someone make that call for the first time as a head coach. So the starter won't be a reflection of Day so much as it will be offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Whether that's Will Howard , Devin Brown , Julian Sayin or Air Noland, will speak first to what Kelly values and then what we can expect the Ohio State offense to value. Two of those players — Howard and Brown — are particularly good on the ground, while the other two, both underclassmen, earned acclaim with accuracy and arm strength as their calling cards. This is the most pivotal year of Day's career at Ohio State, and this is the most pivotal position on the field.

Is 2024 Ohio State's year to win the National Championship?

Is 2024 Ohio State's year to win the National Championship?

Michael: The quarterback competition at Michigan is particularly intriguing given the differences in skill set among the candidates most likely to win the job — junior Alex Orji (6-3, 236 pounds); graduate student Jack Tuttle (6-4, 210 pounds) and senior Davis Warren (6-2, 195 pounds) — and what those differences might mean for an offensive overseen by head coach Sherrone Moore and first-year offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell as they navigate life without Jim Harbaugh.

Orji is a bruising, dual-threat quarterback who is viewed as the best athlete on the team based on the Key Performance Indicators designed by former director of strength and conditioning Ben Herbert, who followed Harbaugh to the NFL. He ran for nearly 1,200 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns during his senior season at Sachse High School in Sachse, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, and has seen the field in run-first packages since arriving at Michigan. An offense built around Orji would likely include an array of quarterback runs and a passing attack focused on short and intermediate routes.

Tuttle is a seventh-year senior who was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. He transferred from Indiana to Michigan ahead of the 2023 campaign and has fluctuated between No. 2 and No. 4 on the depth chart ever since. The combination of age and legitimate starting experience with the Hoosiers , for whom he threw five touchdowns and six interceptions from 2019-22, makes Tuttle the most accomplished option Moore and Campbell have at their disposal. He missed significant portions of the spring while recovering from a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Warren is a cancer survivor and former walk-on who was placed on scholarship following the 2022 season. He starred in Michigan's spring game by completing 6 of 9 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, drawing lofty praise from Campbell in a post-game interview. Warren played sparingly as a reserve in 2023 but failed to complete a pass on five attempts.

Bryce mckinnis | jun 6, 2024.

Via Dereon Coleman (@DereonColemanQB/X)

NORMAN — National top-25 quarterback prospect Dereon Coleman named Oklahoma to his final eight on Thursday.

Where’s home??? @Hayesfawcett3 @JonesHSFootball pic.twitter.com/5R47Cb5MKe — Dereon Coleman (@DereonColemanQB) June 6, 2024

The high school junior-to-be (Class of 2026) from Jones High School in Orlando, FL, announced his top eight schools in a Thursday morning tweet.

Coleman is in Norman this week attending the Brent Venables Elite Camp as a QB prospect. He posted a photo of himself posing with one of the program's Heisman Trophies.

I am excited be back on campus at @OU_Football tomorrow through June 7th and will be camping June 6th‼️ #OUDNA #BOOMER @SethLittrell @TyHatcher18 @CoachVenables @baylintrujillo @Brodie07Perry #BTruQBTraining @JonesHSFootball pic.twitter.com/VJMIgTLCUX — Dereon Coleman (@DereonColemanQB) June 5, 2024

The list included Oklahoma, UCF, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Illinois, Nebraska, TCU and Arkansas. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Coleman is a composite 4-star prospect and the 21st-ranked quarterback overall. He reportedly took an unofficial visit to Norman on April 11.

Coleman led Jones to a 10-4 record and state semifinal appearance while passing for 2,236 yards and 16 touchdowns and six interceptions as a sophomore. He also rushed for 247 yards and four touchdowns. As a freshman at Plant City, FL, he saw limited action.

247Sports’ Andrew Ivens described Coleman as a “quick-twitch passer with a live arm.”

Per 247, Oklahoma does not have a quarterback commit in the 2026 class but has expressed interest in Coleman and Jonas Williams (6-3, 185).

OU has a verbal pledge from 2025 quarterback Kevin Sperry , who transferred from Rock Wall, TX, to Midwest City Carl Albert (OK) to Denton (TX) Guyer.

OU's 2025 class is currently ranked No. 4 nationally, according to Rivals and 247 Sports.

What is cloud computing?

Group of white spheres on light blue background

With cloud computing, organizations essentially buy a range of services offered by cloud service providers (CSPs). The CSP’s servers host all the client’s applications. Organizations can enhance their computing power more quickly and cheaply via the cloud than by purchasing, installing, and maintaining their own servers.

The cloud-computing model is helping organizations to scale new digital solutions with greater speed and agility—and to create value more quickly. Developers use cloud services to build and run custom applications and to maintain infrastructure and networks for companies of virtually all sizes—especially large global ones. CSPs offer services, such as analytics, to handle and manipulate vast amounts of data. Time to market accelerates, speeding innovation to deliver better products and services across the world.

What are examples of cloud computing’s uses?

Get to know and directly engage with senior mckinsey experts on cloud computing.

Brant Carson is a senior partner in McKinsey’s Vancouver office; Chandra Gnanasambandam and Anand Swaminathan are senior partners in the Bay Area office; William Forrest is a senior partner in the Chicago office; Leandro Santos is a senior partner in the Atlanta office; Kate Smaje is a senior partner in the London office.

Cloud computing came on the scene well before the global pandemic hit, in 2020, but the ensuing digital dash  helped demonstrate its power and utility. Here are some examples of how businesses and other organizations employ the cloud:

  • A fast-casual restaurant chain’s online orders multiplied exponentially during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, climbing to 400,000 a day, from 50,000. One pleasant surprise? The company’s online-ordering system could handle the volume—because it had already migrated to the cloud . Thanks to this success, the organization’s leadership decided to accelerate its five-year migration plan to less than one year.
  • A biotech company harnessed cloud computing to deliver the first clinical batch of a COVID-19 vaccine candidate for Phase I trials in just 42 days—thanks in part to breakthrough innovations using scalable cloud data storage and computing  to facilitate processes ensuring the drug’s safety and efficacy.
  • Banks use the cloud for several aspects of customer-service management. They automate transaction calls using voice recognition algorithms and cognitive agents (AI-based online self-service assistants directing customers to helpful information or to a human representative when necessary). In fraud and debt analytics, cloud solutions enhance the predictive power of traditional early-warning systems. To reduce churn, they encourage customer loyalty through holistic retention programs managed entirely in the cloud.
  • Automakers are also along for the cloud ride . One company uses a common cloud platform that serves 124 plants, 500 warehouses, and 1,500 suppliers to consolidate real-time data from machines and systems and to track logistics and offer insights on shop floor processes. Use of the cloud could shave 30 percent off factory costs by 2025—and spark innovation at the same time.

That’s not to mention experiences we all take for granted: using apps on a smartphone, streaming shows and movies, participating in videoconferences. All of these things can happen in the cloud.

How has cloud computing evolved?

Going back a few years, legacy infrastructure dominated IT-hosting budgets. Enterprises planned to move a mere 45 percent of their IT-hosting expenditures to the cloud by 2021. Enter COVID-19, and 65 percent of the decision makers surveyed by McKinsey increased their cloud budgets . An additional 55 percent ended up moving more workloads than initially planned. Having witnessed the cloud’s benefits firsthand, 40 percent of companies expect to pick up the pace of implementation.

The cloud revolution has actually been going on for years—more than 20, if you think the takeoff point was the founding of Salesforce, widely seen as the first software as a service (SaaS) company. Today, the next generation of cloud, including capabilities such as serverless computing, makes it easier for software developers to tweak software functions independently, accelerating the pace of release, and to do so more efficiently. Businesses can therefore serve customers and launch products in a more agile fashion. And the cloud continues to evolve.

Introducing McKinsey Explainers : Direct answers to complex questions

Cost savings are commonly seen as the primary reason for moving to the cloud but managing those costs requires a different and more dynamic approach focused on OpEx rather than CapEx. Financial-operations (or FinOps) capabilities  can indeed enable the continuous management and optimization of cloud costs . But CSPs have developed their offerings so that the cloud’s greatest value opportunity is primarily through business innovation and optimization. In 2020, the top-three CSPs reached $100 billion  in combined revenues—a minor share of the global $2.4 trillion market for enterprise IT services—leaving huge value to be captured. To go beyond merely realizing cost savings, companies must activate three symbiotic rings of cloud value creation : strategy and management, business domain adoption, and foundational capabilities.

What’s the main reason to move to the cloud?

The pandemic demonstrated that the digital transformation can no longer be delayed—and can happen much more quickly than previously imagined. Nothing is more critical to a corporate digital transformation than becoming a cloud-first business. The benefits are faster time to market, simplified innovation and scalability, and reduced risk when effectively managed. The cloud lets companies provide customers with novel digital experiences—in days, not months—and delivers analytics absent on legacy platforms. But to transition to a cloud-first operating model, organizations must make a collective effort that starts at the top. Here are three actions CEOs can take to increase the value their companies get from cloud computing :

  • Establish a sustainable funding model.
  • Develop a new business technology operating model.
  • Set up policies to attract and retain the right engineering talent.

How much value will the cloud create?

Fortune 500 companies adopting the cloud could realize more than $1 trillion in value  by 2030, and not from IT cost reductions alone, according to McKinsey’s analysis of 700 use cases.

For example, the cloud speeds up design, build, and ramp-up, shortening time to market when companies have strong DevOps (the combination of development and operations) processes in place; groups of software developers customize and deploy software for operations that support the business. The cloud’s global infrastructure lets companies scale products almost instantly to reach new customers, geographies, and channels. Finally, digital-first companies use the cloud to adopt emerging technologies and innovate aggressively, using digital capabilities as a competitive differentiator to launch and build businesses .

If companies pursue the cloud’s vast potential in the right ways, they will realize huge value. Companies across diverse industries have implemented the public cloud and seen promising results. The successful ones defined a value-oriented strategy across IT and the business, acquired hands-on experience operating in the cloud, adopted a technology-first approach, and developed a cloud-literate workforce.

What is the cloud cost/procurement model?

Some cloud services, such as server space, are leased. Leasing requires much less capital up front than buying, offers greater flexibility to switch and expand the use of services, cuts the basic cost of buying hardware and software upfront, and reduces the difficulties of upkeep and ownership. Organizations pay only for the infrastructure and computing services that meet their evolving needs. But an outsourcing model  is more apt than other analogies: the computing business issues of cloud customers are addressed by third-party providers that deliver innovative computing services on demand to a wide variety of customers, adapt those services to fit specific needs, and work to constantly improve the offering.

What are cloud risks?

The cloud offers huge cost savings and potential for innovation. However, when companies migrate to the cloud, the simple lift-and-shift approach doesn’t reduce costs, so companies must remediate their existing applications to take advantage of cloud services.

For instance, a major financial-services organization  wanted to move more than 50 percent of its applications to the public cloud within five years. Its goals were to improve resiliency, time to market, and productivity. But not all its business units needed to transition at the same pace. The IT leadership therefore defined varying adoption archetypes to meet each unit’s technical, risk, and operating-model needs.

Legacy cybersecurity architectures and operating models can also pose problems when companies shift to the cloud. The resulting problems, however, involve misconfigurations rather than inherent cloud security vulnerabilities. One powerful solution? Securing cloud workloads for speed and agility : automated security architectures and processes enable workloads to be processed at a much faster tempo.

What kind of cloud talent is needed?

The talent demands of the cloud differ from those of legacy IT. While cloud computing can improve the productivity of your technology, it requires specialized and sometimes hard-to-find talent—including full-stack developers, data engineers, cloud-security engineers, identity- and access-management specialists, and cloud engineers. The cloud talent model  should thus be revisited as you move forward.

Six practical actions can help your organization build the cloud talent you need :

  • Find engineering talent with broad experience and skills.
  • Balance talent maturity levels and the composition of teams.
  • Build an extensive and mandatory upskilling program focused on need.
  • Build an engineering culture that optimizes the developer experience.
  • Consider using partners to accelerate development and assign your best cloud leaders as owners.
  • Retain top talent by focusing on what motivates them.

How do different industries use the cloud?

Different industries are expected to see dramatically different benefits from the cloud. High-tech, retail, and healthcare organizations occupy the top end of the value capture continuum. Electronics and semiconductors, consumer-packaged-goods, and media companies make up the middle. Materials, chemicals, and infrastructure organizations cluster at the lower end.

Nevertheless, myriad use cases provide opportunities to unlock value across industries , as the following examples show:

  • a retailer enhancing omnichannel  fulfillment, using AI to optimize inventory across channels and to provide a seamless customer experience
  • a healthcare organization implementing remote heath monitoring to conduct virtual trials and improve adherence
  • a high-tech company using chatbots to provide premier-level support combining phone, email, and chat
  • an oil and gas company employing automated forecasting to automate supply-and-demand modeling and reduce the need for manual analysis
  • a financial-services organization implementing customer call optimization using real-time voice recognition algorithms to direct customers in distress to experienced representatives for retention offers
  • a financial-services provider moving applications in customer-facing business domains to the public cloud to penetrate promising markets more quickly and at minimal cost
  • a health insurance carrier accelerating the capture of billions of dollars in new revenues by moving systems to the cloud to interact with providers through easier onboarding

The cloud is evolving  to meet the industry-specific needs of companies. From 2021 to 2024, public-cloud spending on vertical applications (such as warehouse management in retailing and enterprise risk management in banking) is expected to grow by more than 40 percent annually. Spending on horizontal workloads (such as customer relationship management) is expected to grow by 25 percent. Healthcare and manufacturing organizations, for instance, plan to spend around twice as much on vertical applications as on horizontal ones.

What are the biggest cloud myths?

Views on cloud computing can be clouded by misconceptions. Here are seven common myths about the cloud —all of which can be debunked:

  • The cloud’s value lies primarily in reducing costs.
  • Cloud computing costs more than in-house computing.
  • On-premises data centers are more secure than the cloud.
  • Applications run more slowly in the cloud.
  • The cloud eliminates the need for infrastructure.
  • The best way to move to the cloud is to focus on applications or data centers.
  • You must lift and shift applications as-is or totally refactor them.

How large must my organization be to benefit from the cloud?

Here’s one more huge misconception: the cloud is just for big multinational companies. In fact, cloud can help make small local companies become multinational. A company’s benefits from implementing the cloud are not constrained by its size. In fact, the cloud shifts barrier to entry skill rather than scale, making it possible for a company of any size to compete if it has people with the right skills. With cloud, highly skilled small companies can take on established competitors. To realize the cloud’s immense potential value fully, organizations must take a thoughtful approach, with IT and the businesses working together.
