There is nothing by which the society or the nation could ever repay the services of a teacher. S/he is the very foundation of a society.

It feels great to welcome you all to this auspicious occasion; since we have gathered here to celebrate one of the most admirable occasions i.e. Teacher’s Day, it’s an opportunity for me to share few words about teachers, their role in schools and colleges and their influence on the students.

Teachers are the backbone of our society because they majorly contribute in shaping the future of a nation, i.e. students and guide them in becoming an ideal citizen of the country. Teacher’s job is full of responsibility and challenges because not every student is same and thus the teacher has to be dynamic and adopt different teaching patterns for different students. Teaching is a social practice and more than knowledge, a teacher must be a good human being who can very well shoulder the responsibility of his/her job and understand the sensitivity of the situation where students from different backgrounds have come together for learning and thus apply skills and knowledge to the best of his/her capacity while teaching.

Some of the qualities which every teacher must possess in order to become most acceptable are:

Enthusiasm – It is a known fact that teachers who show enthusiasm while teaching create a positive atmosphere and learning environment which help students in gaining knowledge fast and with fun. These teachers don’t follow the uniform pattern instead, they innovate teaching methods to keep the students engaged and enthusiastic.

The most important role a teacher plays is in motivating the students; some of the students find their teacher to be a role model and try to imitate them. Thus it is very important that the teacher leaves a positive impression on each student.

Interaction with learners – It is very important for the teacher to indulge into transparent and open discussion with the students in order to understand the capability of the learner. Some students are shy, while other may be afraid of failure. A teacher is highly trusted to build up the student emotionally and practically.

Conventionally, teaching is considered equivalent to praying. In olden days, parents used to leave their children in gurukul (a kind of residential school where students live with the teacher for studies). This tradition was greatly supported by the trust and bond between the parents and teachers. Even today, trust is one of the most important factors which motivate parents to get their children admitted in a particular school. A teacher is considered to be the alternate parents; this makes teaching all the more challenging and full of accountability.

In recent days, we get to hear a lot about corporal punishment. Some of the teachers get barbaric and beat students so badly that some of them don’t even survive. This is highly restricted in all over India. Though it is important for the teachers to be strict sometimes but there can be alternate methods to punish the students than harming them physically.

Well, I would like to end this note with a huge thanks to our teachers who are so caring and compassionate. We are highly honoured to be a part of this School.

They have helped us seek the truth and live by it at all times. They have given their time most generously, and offered advice most willingly. Isn’t it?

And naturally our teachers have been our role models. We have always looked up to our teachers with respect, awe and love. And we have always wondered if we could ever match up to them. Right?

Really speaking, it may never be possible for us to say all that our teachers have done for us and made possible for us so that we may work hard, excel and have a bright and happy future.

As we come together to thank our teachers, we find words are insufficient to do that. Words seem to pale before our teachers’ selfless service and devotion to the cause of educating, enlightening and moulding our minds, hearts and lives in totality. Words can never equal what our teachers have done for us with no expectation whatsoever.

Nevertheless, we have to resort to saying verbally a thank you to our teachers which is, of course, backed by our most sincere gratitude and deep love and appreciation.

And we were only overwhelmed with gratitude.

These memories flood our minds and hearts as we remember our dear teachers. Yes, indeed!

Years may roll on and time flies, yet our teachers have a very special place in our hearts. That it seems is the power of sharing. When teachers teach us it is really that they share so much of their time, learning and life skills with us. Teachers are indeed so generous, and that is what transforms the lives of students year after year.

When we come together on occasions such as today to celebrate the lives and work of teachers, let us determine to share, in our own way, something that we may be endowed with, with those who may lack it. When we can do something akin to what our teachers did for us, it would only make our teachers happy and proud of us. It may be one way of saying a big thank you to our teachers.

Greetings everyone! I am ABC and today I have the pleasure of hosting this program and delivering the thank you speech to teachers who have made us what we are today. This is a very emotional time for all of us because, on one hand, we are moving towards a new life. On the other hand, we are leaving our favorite place, our school, where we spent the most formative years of our lives.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of our teachers for preparing us to compete in the global marketplace. Our teachers are a symbol of our strength and will always be a wonderful source of support for us all. They are tough in the form of fathers and loving in the form of mothers, caring for us as if we were friends, strict disciplinarians but always looking out for us. Our teachers are great individuals who have shaped us after our parents and made us wise to deal with the world. We've accepted everything and worked hard to overcome our flaws as a team.

I recall being a timid and introverted student when I first enrolled in this class. I've struggled with public speaking, and today I'm giving a gratitude speech for teachers who helped me overcome my shyness. This is due to the effort and care they showered on me. They didn't leave any stone unturned in their efforts to alter my personality and attitude.

I don't think I need to say that they've done a pretty good job of preparing me for the outside world. The teacher resembles a mentor and serves as an excellent role model for students. Every word spoken by the teacher is embraced by the students. Teachers are excellent and selfless people who accept each student without prejudice.

In comparison to other students, I found it more difficult to complete my projects and assignments. You took extra time to prepare me for the real world' and paid close attention to me. I recall a time in class 11 when I had given up all hope. You all encouraged me in your own unique way and shared stories of great people who rose to fame after adversity.

You instilled in me the importance of working hard and not compromising on small matters. All of these things I've learned from you. I am confident that all of my friends would like to express their gratitude to our dear teachers, as we are always grateful to all of you.

On behalf of myself and my classmates, I would like to express my gratitude to all of the Teachers who helped us in our journey.

When I first met you, I despised you. You made me stand up straight, which I despised. I despised the way you forced me to wear my uniform correctly. I despised the way you forced me to speak properly. Most of all, I despised the way you insisted on only accepting my work if it was the best I could do. At first, we had a lot of disagreements. I recall being kept in a lot during lunch. And, despite my screaming and threats – and even a few tears – I recall you never lose your cool. You've always been very patient with me. You were always willing to listen to me whenever I needed to be heard.

I consider that period to be pivotal in my growth into the person I am today. You instilled discipline in me. You instilled in me the value of respect. You taught me much more than English, which was what you were supposed to be teaching me. You taught me that I was capable of much more than I or others believed. Instead of being a clown, I could be a success.

A motivator. An inspiration. An Enthusiast. These three qualities are just a few of the many you show every day with all of your students, including me.

Too often, we rush through the ‘ropes of life,' oblivious to the importance of taking the time to express our gratitude and genuine appreciation for the support you so generously provide for our development as not only students but also as global citizens.

Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for seeing me as a learning and sharing partner. Thank you for allowing yourself to be who you are. Thank you for being one of the few outstanding educators in the world. May you be an inspiration to others to achieve greatness as you have.

Meet the Teacher: He uses humor, compassion to teach his Jackson students to love English

JACKSON, MI - It was the positive relationships with his own teachers that made Aaron Hunt pursue a career in education. Now, he hopes to be the same type of role model for his own students.

Hunt, 44, has taught English language arts for 19 years - all of them at Jackson High School.

“I always performed better in English classes, and I enjoyed them more,” Hunt said. “I think it had a lot to do with the teachers as well. I received better grades in those classes, and I enjoyed the writing and the literature - that’s probably why I chose this direction.”

In his almost two-decade stint at Jackson High, Hunt has taught English at all grade levels. He currently teaches freshmen in addition to teaching a number of English elective classes and serving as the adviser for The Reflector News - Jackson High’s student newspaper.

Born and raised in Indiana, Hunt met his wife - a Jackson-native - while they attended Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. Hunt moved to Jackson after graduating with a degree in English education in 2002.

Hunt sat down with MLive/Jackson Citizen Patriot to talk about the love of language and literature that led him to the classroom, and the bonds formed with his students that have kept him in the classroom.

Jackson Citizen Patriot: Was there a specific moment or experience that inspired you to get into the field of education?

Aaron Hunt : I had some amazing teachers in high school. My English and history teachers were especially memorable. Any teachers that made me laugh through class were my favorite, and I never dreaded going to those classes. Those teachers were part of the reason I chose to go into education and one of the reasons I teach the way I do, using humor as much as I can in the classroom. Also, while in college I worked with middle and high school students at youth camps during the summers, and I realized that I enjoyed working with that age group and that was something I could see myself doing in my career.

JCP: Why was teaching in the field you’re currently in such a calling for you?

Hunt : After I chose to obtain a degree in education - I didn’t actually choose until my junior year in college - I took an English grammar class that I loved. I know that’s usually not why teachers choose and love language arts, but the grammar is one of my favorite parts of teaching English. Parts of speech, parts of the sentence, clauses - knowing how they all fit and work together, that’s what I love. Since the beginning of my career, I’ve also fallen in love with the literature, and I still discover new things every time I teach the same pieces.

JCP: The field of education has evolved in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In what ways, if any, have you changed and evolved in your role in the past couple of years?

Hunt : I do more with technology, of course, because we had to learn that a lot better when all of that was going on. I’ve also become much more forgiving in how I teach; I used to be very strict with late work and students making excuses, things like that. During the pandemic, we had to be much more open-minded, compassionate and understanding, and that has carried over since then. I give more allowance for late work, and I’m just not as strict now with some of the policies that would have made me stop and disrupt my class in the past - I just kind of let it go. I think the way we treated students during the pandemic has carried over.

JCP: Is there a specific moment from your career so far that you would consider to be the most rewarding?

Hunt : Any time I get a note from a student telling me that they enjoy my class, or a Facebook message from a former student saying they were happy they had me as a teacher for some reason or another - those things are the most rewarding for me. I don’t need accolades from my administration or from my district. Grade evaluations are nice, but knowing that students had a memorable experience in my class means much more.

JCP: What is your favorite aspect of your job?

Hunt : My favorite part is just seeing students enjoy my class. When I see them laughing and having a good time while still learning, that is what makes me happy, and makes what I do worthwhile.

What All Teachers Should Know About WIDA’s Test for English Learners

Schools are required to test the progress of their English learners each year to determine whether they still need language instruction services or can exit out of such programs. In close to 40 states, that test is known as the WIDA ACCESS test .

What is the WIDA ACCESS test used for?

Offered both online and in a paper format, ACCESS tests students’ proficiency in four domains: speaking, reading, listening, and writing in English. The questions are modeled along academic content they would see in regular classes. For instance, reading questions might be about a science topic. The test is checking for language use in academic contexts, not content knowledge nor social language.

Teachers who specialize in English-language instruction say their general education peers play a key role in prepping students to succeed on the ACCESS test. And researchers who study English-language acquisition agree.

This collaboration between general and specialized teachers is even more critical now, researchers say, because new analyses of national ACCESS scores show that average scores continue to trend down since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For general education teachers to better support language acquisition for the English learners in their classrooms, it starts with familiarizing themselves with the test itself and what scores can tell them about their students’ language needs.

“There is a gap between what general education teachers likely know about the WIDA test because they are unable to see it administered,” said Missy Testerman, the 2024 National Teacher of the Year and a K-8 English-as-a-second-language teacher in Rogersville, Tenn. “I feel like it’s a lot more rigorous than most people are aware of in terms of what our English-language learners are asked to do.”

The WIDA ACCESS test covers language use in an academic context

The ACCESS test takes up to four hours to complete, though timing can vary, and is typically split across multiple days in one week.

The 36 states (as well as additional territories and federal agencies) that use the test are part of what’s known as the WIDA consortium—which provides common standards as the measure of English language proficiency. The test builds from those standards in terms of levels of difficulty by grade level. It’s also an adaptive test—in particular, the online test increases or decreases levels of difficulty (known as tiers) as the student progresses, said Mark Chapman, senior innovation researcher at WIDA. For the paper test, administrators set the difficulty level for each student.

States then individually set the scores students need to get across the four domains to demonstrate proficiency in English. Their scores determine if they remain in an English-learner program or if they can exit.

ACCESS is not a test students can study for. However, students who consistently use and are exposed to language in an academic context throughout the school day are better prepared for the test.

“It’s really important to disentangle that everyday social language, that we know many students who were born in the United States and grew up in the United States … tend to be highly proficient in,” Chapman said. (Many English learners were born or grew up in the United States.)

“But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can understand the language needed to describe a science experiment, or you have the language to talk through the solution to a math problem. Those are different types of language development, which we’re trying to assess.”

What is taking WIDA ACCESS like for students?

Both online and paper versions of the test incorporate several visuals that help keep students engaged throughout and serve as additional support for younger English learners and newcomer students still very new to the English language, said Fabiana MacMillan, WIDA’s director of test development.

Students select answers from multiple-choice options, write or type out sentences and paragraphs, click and drag images, and even record themselves responding to prompts.

To loop general education colleagues into her work with English learners, Testerman in past years has taken sample questions and practice tests that are freely available on the WIDA website to general classrooms and led activities with the whole class.

“It’s really very interesting because sometimes the general education teachers are shocked at how many of their [non-English-learner] students in the general education classroom have trouble with those tasks, particularly around the writing piece,” Testerman said.

“I feel like in some cases, it’s given my [English-learner] students more respect, because their teachers and their classmates see the types of things that they’re having to do on the WIDA test,” she added.

What can the results on WIDA ACCESS tests tell teachers about students?

At Volusia County public schools in Florida, Betsy Sotomayor, an English-for-speakers-of-other-languages resource teacher for the district, regularly meets with general education teachers to review ACCESS sample questions and students’ scores and what they mean for their general classroom work.

For instance, a student may score low in the speaking portion of ACCESS but high in reading. The teacher can ask: Is that student getting enough time to practice speaking in academic contexts in the classroom?

Teachers then have a better sense of what language practice is needed in general classrooms, Sotomayor said.

“It’s just the fear of the unknown. But then once [teachers] understand how valuable this assessment is, they’re all in, they’re really all in, and they really appreciate it,” she said.

General education teachers can improve academic language use for all students

For all educators to better support English learners’ language development, they first need the right mindset.

Just because an English learner’s vocabulary may not be as expansive as others, or they write in phrases rather than sentences, doesn’t mean they’re not connecting with academic content, said Leslie Grimm, assistant director of educator learning, research, and practice at WIDA. They may just not be able to express their content knowledge in full in English yet.

“If you go into these contexts thinking 100 percent that you recognize, you affirm, and you respect where they are in their learning trajectory, and what they know and what they can do, I think that you’ll set up a more rigorous classroom environment,” Grimm said. “Because the reality is classroom environments have to be rigorous to meet any standards, whether it’s English-language development standards or content standards.”

Whether it’s preparing English learners for state standardized tests or the ACCESS test, Grimm has one big piece of advice for all teachers: maximize the opportunities for students to engage across language modalities. (Speaking, writing, etc.)

English learners need opportunities to practice talking and writing in class. Grimm suggests setting up group activities that involve turn and talk where, given a topic, a student may say something and then another says something different, but they’re building on that previous idea and expanding on it.

Students should also be given clear directions on what they are doing across modalities. For instance, if a student is asked to describe something that they’re noticing in a science experiment and must write that down, what kind of language would they use? They may name what they are studying but then may use a pronoun to describe it later, rather than restate the name.

If at the end of a social studies unit students must engage in classroom debate, there are specific language features used when speaking in a debate that students should practice using throughout the unit.

Testerman said that promoting formal, language use in general classrooms is something that benefits all students, especially since language learning never stops as language itself evolves. For instance, the word zoom used to mean moving at a fast pace but is now more often used to refer to the virtual meeting platform and the verb of using said platform, she said.

But Testerman also recognizes how busy teachers are. It’s why she advocates for district leaders to facilitate time for general classroom teachers to plan with English-as-a-second-language teachers so they can review language objectives and learning standards together and come up with a plan on how to best promote language development across the school day.

Earlier this month, NYU Langone Health bestowed an award on a labor and delivery nurse for providing compassionate care to mothers who had lost babies. But shortly after, the nurse said, the hospital fired her over the speech she gave when she accepted the award.

In it, she spoke of the suffering of Palestinian women amid the Israel-Hamas war, which she called a “genocide.” The nurse, Hesen Jabr, is not the first medical worker to be fired at NYU Langone, a major New York hospital system, over commentary about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The hospital is currently embroiled in a lawsuit by a prominent cancer researcher, who was fired from his job as the director of its cancer center after he posted a variety of anti-Hamas political cartoons. Some included offensive caricatures of Arab people.

A young doctor-trainee was also “removed from service” at an NYU Langone hospital on Long Island, according to the hospital, after being accused of posting a message on Instagram defending the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel — though he was later quietly reinstated.

In her speech, according to a video she posted on social media , Ms. Jabr drew a connection between her work with grieving mothers in New York and the war in Gaza.

“It pains me to see the women from my country going through unimaginable losses themselves during the current genocide in Gaza,” said Ms. Jabr, who is Palestinian-American. “This award is deeply personal to me for those reasons.”

She added , “Even though I can’t hold their hands and comfort them as they grieve their unborn children and the children they have lost during this genocide, I hope to keep making them proud as I keep representing them here at NYU.”

Ms. Jabr said that these remarks led to her firing on May 22 after she returned to work following the ceremony. “As soon as I walked into the unit, I was dragged into an impromptu meeting with the President and Vice President of Nursing at NYU Langone to discuss how I ‘put others at risk’ and ‘ruined the ceremony’ and ‘offended people’ because a small part of my speech was a tribute towards the grieving mothers in my country,” she wrote in a post on Instagram. She said that she then worked most of her shift before being summoned to an office where she was fired and escorted off the premises.

Israel has categorically denied the accusation that it is carrying out a genocide in Gaza .

A spokesman for NYU Langone, Steve Ritea, confirmed that Ms. Jabr was fired following her speech, saying that there had been “a previous incident as well.”

“Hesen Jabr was warned in December, following a previous incident, not to bring her views on this divisive and charged issue into the workplace,” Mr. Ritea said in a statement. “She instead chose not to heed that at a recent employee recognition event that was widely attended by her colleagues, some of whom were upset after her comments."

“As a result, Jabr is no longer an NYU Langone employee,” he added.

Mr. Ritea did not say what the “previous incident” was. On Facebook, Ms. Jabr suggested there had long been workplace tensions. Her postings described heated political arguments on the labor and delivery floor. “The pure psychological warfare NYU has waged on me as a nurse, Muslim, Palestinian, and woman, has only left me resolute,” read one message she posted on Facebook.

Ms. Jabr’s activism dates back to her childhood: When she was in fifth grade in Louisiana, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on her behalf after she was forced to accept a Bible from her school principal. “This is not my first rodeo,” she said in an interview Tuesday evening.

Ms. Jabr, who had worked at NYU Langone since 2015, said that in recent months she had been questioned repeatedly by hospital administrators about her social media postings about Israel and the war in Gaza. She described her speech at the awards ceremony as “the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Other employees around the country have been fired , suspended or investigated for their comments about the Israel-Hamas war. While some states, such as Connecticut, have restricted the ability of employers to fire workers for their opinions or speech, New York’s protections for workers are more limited .

In Ms. Jabr’s case, she had been invited to the lectern and delivered a brief speech at the awards ceremony, where, according to the hospital , she had received an award given to “a nurse who exemplifies what it means to provide compassionate care to patients and their families during perinatal bereavement.”

Before turning to the war in Gaza, Ms. Jabr expressed gratitude to her co-workers, saying the award belonged to them: “Truthfully, it does belong to all the nurses on labor who have held the hands of a grieving mother.”

In the interview, Ms. Jabr defended her speech and said talking about the war “was so relevant” given the nature of the award she had won.

“It was an award for bereavement; it was for grieving mothers,” she noted.

Gateway speech instructor's final promotes gratitude

Phil Randolph has been a full-time Gateway High School teacher for 18 years.

“I first student taught here right out of college in 2005, and they’ve kept me around ever since,” said Randolph, who teaches English.

In addition to serving as the boys’ volleyball team head coach, junior class council advisor and the SAT test center coordinator, he began teaching speech class a decade ago.

He has instituted an unusual event for the elective course final.

“I wanted to come up with an exercise that was meaningful and that, hopefully, would stand out as one of those things that one would distinctly remember about his or her time in high school,” Randolph said.

The in-class speeches, debates and assignments – all part of the coursework — are not without merit.

“The final, however,” he said, “is a bit of a different animal altogether.”

For the assignment, students were tasked with composing and delivering a celebratory toast to someone who has played a positive and vital role in their lives.

Invitations are sent out to the honorees, asking for their attendance to the after-school event in the library, so the students can properly show their appreciation.

One stipulation is that the students have to choose someone who is not in high school. Most students opt for a parent or guardian. Others typically select older siblings, grandparents, teachers, coaches and church members.

Prior to the final, Randolph gives each student a questionnaire about their peers, and students are selected to receive one of four awards at the final.

Junior Auroya Brown was voted “MVP” by her peers. She toasted her grandmother, Shirley Kendeall.

Junior Elaiyah Daniels, who honored her grandmother, Linda Coley, was given the “Swag Swag” award for giving the most dynamic speeches this semester.

Junior Amirah Young toasted her mother Ariane Andrews and was given the “Sweetheart” award.

Sophomore Aiden Hagerty, who honored his mother Laurell Hahn, was voted “Most Improved.”
