How To Become An Auxiliary Nurse In Nigeria

How To Become An Auxiliary Nurse In Nigeria

Nigeria with a population of over 200 million people is one of the countries with highest number of human resources for health in Africa, out of 49 low income countries identified by world bank parameters as having markedly low numbers of nurses and doctors, Nigeria is sixth in position and falls well below the critical threshold of 23 nurses per 10,000 population. Despite the progress made by the Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery Council , there is still shortage of nurses in Nigeria.

Before becoming an auxiliary nurse, it’s important to understand the different terminology that can be used to describe this position. Auxiliary nurses are often referred to as healthcare assistants or nursing assistants. But no matter what your job title is, you will have the same responsibilities.

What Does An Auxiliary Nurses Do?

The role of an auxiliary nurse is to assist qualified nursing practitioners in administering care to patients. Auxiliary nurses are often referred to as health assistants. Auxiliary nurses require no academic qualifications, and the role can serve as a pathway into a career as a registered nurse . The main responsibility of an auxiliary nurse is to ensure patients are kept as comfortable as possible. An auxiliary nurse washes and dresses incapacitated patients, feeds patients at meal times and helps those who have difficulty walking to get around. Auxiliary nurses also help the elderly and disabled with toileting. An auxiliary nurse is also assigned to assess patients’ health condition by taking temperatures, measuring weight and assessing respiration levels. An auxiliary nurse also performs minor medical procedures and assesses blood pressure levels. She or he will also make patient’s beds, change their sheets when required and assist with the general upkeep of the ward.

Auxiliary nurses also work alongside health care scientists, assisting them in the identification and treatment of a range of diseases. Some work with audiologists, for instance, and help qualified scientists to research hearing disorders and develop effective coping strategies for patients. Auxiliary nurses also help health care scientists with the analysis of blood and urine samples and patient histories.

Clinical Support

Auxiliary nurses also perform clinical support roles under the supervision of health care professionals including physiotherapists, nutritionists, pediatricians and speech and language therapists. Duties vary widely depending on the form of therapy administered. Nurses may have to help patients mentally prepare for therapy sessions or set up equipment required for a session. They may also play a more proactive role and assist the therapist in actual treatment. Auxiliary nurses in this role play a key administrative duty, taking notes and keeping accurate records of patients’ medical histories. When performing these duties, auxiliary nurses are sometimes referred to as assistant therapists or therapist helpers.

Due to scarcity of qualified nurses in Nigeria, Auxiliary nurses are in high demand especially in large cities like Abuja, Lagos port Harcourt and other major cities. To become an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria, NO fixed training or syllabus or a minimum level of education is required. They trained on the job to follow orders from a Registered /Qualified Nurse or a Doctor. They are not trained to make a medical diagnosis or commence treatment.

However, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria , any hospital operating or replacing nurses with auxiliary nurses, is operating with quack nurses, because they are not competent to deliver nursing care and members of the public that access services from such hospitals are doing so at their own risk. Hospitals are supposed to ensure that nurses are qualified, registered and licensed to practice as nurses. According to an official of the council, if you want to set up a hospital, you send the list of nurses to our organization, we then send our officers to verify, because we have verification offices which verify whether a person is qualified to practice or not. Also trained nurses are issued practicing licenses. A practicing licensed lasts for a period of three years, and before the expiration, the nurse is expected to undergo a mandatory development program which is attached with a two credit unit.

Difference Between Qualified Nurse and an Auxiliary Nurse

In certain countries, the training of auxiliary nurses  is at such a level that the dividing line between their duties and those of fully qualified nurses has become difficult to draw ; provision is even made, in certain countries, for the nursing auxiliary to acquire the title of qualified nurse. In other countries, on the other hand, the training prescribed is not sufficient to make it possible for greater responsibilities to be given to nursing auxiliaries.

A certified or registered Nurse will need to attend a national regulations’ specified period of Training in a recognized School of Nursing school or University, and then pass a standardized exam by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria before he/she can practice. Moreover, a Nurse is expected to make some diagnosis and commence treatment before the arrival of a doctor.

Experience by an auxiliary does not equate to a Certified Nurse despite the fact that they put on similar uniform and work for the same health care providers.

Salary of Auxiliary Nurse In Nigeria

How much an auxiliary nurse earns in Nigeria depends on a number of factors, which include location of hospital and years of experience. The average salary of an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria ranges between =N= 25,000 – =N= 70,000 monthly. Those employed by state and local government health authorities earn higher than those in the employ of private hospitals . READ : 7 Things a Public Health Nurse Should Not Do

How to Become an Auxiliary Nurse in Nigeria

Ayomide

Quick Facts About Auxiliary Nurse

The deficient number of healthcare professionals in Nigeria is one of the reasons for the high demand of auxiliary nurses in Nigeria. While they may not be trained to administer medications and are not registered as certified nurses, their contribution to the effective delivery of healthcare services to the populace cannot be underestimated. They are the assistants to the certified nurses we exalt, the ones that help to make the services of the nurses in a hospital go smoothly.

Due to their high demand, you might have been on the lookout for how to become an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria. You may just be on the right path as this career path can serve as a spring board to help you become a certified and registered nurse. It will also give you the needed experience and an edge over your peers if and when you become a registered nurse.

In this article, you will have all the information you need concerning how to become an auxiliary nurse in Nigeria. We will also give you the differences that exist between an auxiliary nurse and a registered nurse, while helping you become familiar with the roles of an auxiliary nurse in a hospital.

Who is an Auxiliary Nurse?

In many countries, there is hardly any distinction between the types of nurses that are in a hospital. When a patient sees any other staff of the hospital in white gown, they assume they are nurses. Although they may be right to refer to them as nurses, they are all not the same types of nurses.

In Nigeria, many people know that there is a majority of auxiliary nurses in the hospitals but they have no idea what the responsibilities of the auxiliary nurses are. Most of the registered nurses are easily confused with the auxiliary nurses because their roles are not well defined.

Auxiliary nurses are healthcare professionals that aid registered nurses in providing comfort and attendance to patients’ needs . They are usually referred to as nurse or nursing assistants, that is, they assist professional nurses in administering care to the patients. Auxiliary nurses are the nurses you can find in some Nigerian hospitals, wearing blue gowns, as opposed to the white gown and ribbon the registered nurses wear.

As an auxiliary nurse, you do not need to undergo any form of formal training or scholarly education to administer the type of care they do to patients. In most cases in Nigeria, informal training under a registered nurse, who is in active service or retired, is the norm. However, there are better avenues to acquire training to stand out from the rest and aid in helping you step up later in your nursing career.

What Does an Auxiliary Nurse Do?

Auxiliary nurses are not professionally trained or registered nurses, therefore, they are not ethically or legally allowed to administer medication or injections to patients. Their major responsibility is to help patients remain comfortable in their beds and help them in their recovery process. They do these by feeding patients that are unable to do so themselves, help the patients that are unable to stand do so, especially if they have to use the convenience.

Auxiliary nurses are also responsible for aiding other health professionals such as physiologists, in getting their patients up and about when they need to. They are important in helping patients who are relearning to use certain parts of their body get their training sessions done.

However, they do more than these in many Nigerian hospitals, especially private hospitals. They administer drugs and give injections in the absence of a registered nurse. Although this is contrary to their legal role, the registered nurses train them to do these things to lessen the workload on themselves, and cut cost for the hospital.

Differences Between Registered Nurses and Auxiliary Nurses

The conclusion of your application letter should be strong and clear , and that is because it is the last impression you are leaving with the reader. It is important to reiterate your enthusiasm and interest in the role and give thanks for their advance consideration.

You should also include a call to action, such as asking the employer to contact you for an interview. Mention how much you look forward to hearing from them and what makes you an ideal candidate.

Use a formal sign-off to leave a good impression. Here are some key points to take note of.

  • Nigeria's standard sign-off for an application letter is "Yours faithfully."
  • That should be followed by your signature and then your full name, written in capital letters.
  • If you know the recipient's name, you can use a more personalized sign-off such as "Yours sincerely."
  • Sign-offs should always be written in full, without any abbreviations. That is necessary to show respect and professionalism to the recipient.
  • Always double-check your sign-off before sending your application letter, as any spelling mistakes could damage your chances of receiving a response.

How to write an Application Letter for a job in Nigeria

auxiliary nurse application letter in nigeria without experience

If you are not sure how to write an application letter for a job in Nigeria, you came to the right place. Read our best tips and look through some useful samples.

First, let’s clarify the terms. Application documents differ from country to country. Whereas in Europe and North America a cover letter typically accompanies a resume, an application letter stands on its own and therefore, is more in-depth. Nigerian employers use an application letter and a cover letter interchangeably. In this article, we’ll take a brief look at how to write an effective application letter and provide you with a sample for guidance. Check out some amazing and detailed writing guides and samples of a job application letter in Nigeria to explore the topic more deeply.

So if you are applying to a company, and in the job description they request either an application letter or a cover letter, you should prepare a resume/CV accompanied by a piece of writing that succinctly summarizes your best selling points and professional accomplishments.

Thus, an application letter follows the rules of formal writing. But if you use our recommendations, you will grab the hiring manager’s attention and stand out from a barrage of clichéd and half-hearted pieces.

How to Write an Application Letter in Nigeria

Before you start writing, first read these important tips.

  • Always write an outline, as it will inform your letter of the structure.
  • Write a draft and carefully polish it.
  • Pay special attention to the first and last sentences as they can leave a lasting impression or prompt a hiring manager to toss your letter in the trash.
  • Tailor your application letter to the vacancy requirements or at least to the company’s policy and vision.
  • Use a friendly tone and avoid complaining or being chummy.
  • Make it concise.

If you are about to write your first application letter, it will take you some time to find all the information you need, write a draft, and finally polish it by proofreading and using our tips. But in the long run it will pay off.

Now let’s look in greater detail at the stages of writing an application letter or cover letter for a job in Nigeria.

Outline. At this stage just jot down the titles of the paragraphs and what comes to mind on the spur of the moment. For example, your outline can use the following application letter format in Nigeria:

  • Company’s address
  • Opening sentence ( strong leadership, customer service, optimizing expenditures )
  • Reasons for writing ( my experience fit their job description )
  • Your qualifications and what you have to offer the company
  • Summarize and thank

Draft. To avoid being bogged down by little things like googling the company’s address and the names of the hiring manager and recruiter, write the bulk of the letter first. You can hone your whole draft during the final stages.

Forbes career counselor Robin Ryan advises against writing a generic letter. The fact that you should not copy and paste a random example of a job application letter in Nigeria goes without saying.

In the first paragraph, talk about your best qualities and most amazing results. Treat it as a 30-second elevator speech. Be concise and use only meaningful phrases without cliches and banalities.

In the second paragraph, elaborate on your professional experience, keeping in mind the employer’s needs. List your most impressive projects and jobs. If you are entry-level, you can mention your education, including SATs score, certificates and diplomas, awards, publications, etc.

In the third paragraph, express your admiration of the company and emphasize your fit with the company’s values, mission, and job requirements.

Polish your draft. After you compose your rough draft, read and reread it several times, weeding out all platitudes, empty phrases, and clichés. Daniel Victor from the New York Times advises against stating the obvious. For example, there is no point in saying that you are a “hard-worker” or have a “creative mind.” First of all, such statements are overused. Second, your ability to work hard will be obvious from the work you do.

Work on the first and last sentences. You should put more thought and consideration into wording it than an average candidate cares to do. For example, Ryan recommends not to open up your letter with overused phrases like “I’m applying for a vacancy advertised on the company’s LinkedIn page.” An application letter is short, so don’t waste space on vapid, generic sentences that say virtually nothing about you.

It will take you some time and research to craft an attention-grabbing opener that will immediately tap into the employer’s need and demonstrate your qualities. Even if you are not responding to a specific job description and are writing a cold letter, try to analyze the job you are applying for. As soon as you grasp what the employer wants to see in an employee in this position, you will know how to address it.

If your aim is to demonstrate your skills and work results, you should write something similar to this opener: “Twice an award holder for my superb selling skills at the Finn Group, I can bring my proven expertise in sales and product knowledge to increase revenue for the Diana & Co. sales team.”

When finishing the letter, focus on what you bring to the company rather than what you can take from them. That is why ‘looking forward to seeing you in person’ is just a waste. Conclude your letter with a promise:

‘I welcome the chance to discuss your current varnish and paint sales objectives and show you how my innovations and solutions at the Finn Group can translate into growth for Diana & Co.”

“Could we meet next week to discuss how my skills in software sales, leadership, and database management can help grow your revenue by 15% per year?”

“I would welcome the chance to discuss the increased sales and reduced costs I would bring to your company.”

Tailor your application letter to the vacancy requirements. After the bulk of your application letter is written, keep polishing it. Check out whether your descriptions and mentioned skills fit the job descriptions that you can find on the company’s website or LinkedIn page. You need to show that you understand the company’s needs and job duties and are ready to deliver.

Proofread your letter. When you re-read your letter several times, make sure you conform to a Nigerian application letter format. At this stage, you should know the name of the hiring manager to go beyond a generic ‘Dear Sirs’ or ‘To whom it may.’ Shorten overly-wordy sentences and check each sentence for clarity. Zap out any slang or colloquial words. Your tone should be friendly and light yet formal.

Alicia Benton General Manager Bonbon Group 907 Better Street Los Angeles, CA 90003

Dear Ms. Benton,

After 5 years in leadership positions in two respectable and award-winning Canadian restaurants, I can offer my new employer improved customer service, efficient stock control, and innovative twists on classics.

I am aware that right now you have no vacancy for a sous-chef. But having looked through your previous job ads, I decided to let you know that I can be a perfect fit if your restaurant network is looking to branch out. I have the potential for quick growth, as I rose from line chef to sous chef within a few months and from sous chef to head chef within a year. With a focus on constant upskilling of team members and a rigorous hygiene routine, I also contributed to increased sales by 30% by finding two large clients for catering at large-scale events.

Obtaining the chef position at the Bonbon Group restaurant would be a challenge and a dream come true at the same time. The Bonbon Group is industry-famous for its performance, career opportunities, and utmost care for clients. I share these qualities and would love an opportunity to work for your success. Could we set up a meeting next week to discuss how my skills in kitchen management and leadership can help make your restaurant even more famous than it is now?

Best regards,

Alex Wind +1 510-401-1892 [email protected]

Wrapping up

As you can see, a clear-cut structure makes writing an application letter less difficult than one might fear. Yet, you will definitely need some preliminary research. If you feel paralized by the fear of a blank page, just start jotting down whatever comes to your mind. You can reword and polish it later. Or use the Internet, where you can find many online application letter builders that can provide you with an excellent template that you can edit and make more personalized.

Your application can be rather simple and concise and still land you a job interview if you aim to make it unique and avoid clichés. Do not go over one page. Proofread it many times. And treat it as an important piece of writing that has a pinch of your personality.

  • Show interest in the institution. Emphasize that you’re not just looking for any job, but that you’re interested in the position and the institution because you consider them perfect for your skills, interests, and career in word goals.
  • Address what the employer is looking for. Connect your skills and qualifications with the ones stated on the job listing.
