Application requirements for all doctoral programs (phd).

All of our doctoral programs are designed to develop outstanding educational researchers who have a deep understanding of the scientific, practical and policy issues they study. All require full-time study, and we promise five years of full-time financial support for every student we admit. Our doctoral programs are small, typically ranging from about 25 to 35 new students a year. The small size of our doctoral cohorts creates big educational advantages for students: the classes are almost always small, students receive individualized attention from their advisors, and they have many opportunities to develop close collegial relationships with fellow students.

It is extremely important to demonstrate in your statement of purpose that your interests converge closely with the current research of faculty who work in the program to which you are applying. Other doctoral applicants will certainly do this, and if you don't, you will forfeit an important competitive advantage to them.

Application Fee

The application fee is $125 , is non-refundable, and must be received by the application deadline.

Application Fee Waivers

Stanford offers three types of application fee waivers for which GSE applicants may apply and be considered:

• GRE Fee Reduction Certificate-Based Waiver
• Diversity Program Participation-Based Waiver
• School-Based Waiver

Statement of Purpose

A Statement of Purpose is required. Your statement should be typed, single-spaced and should be between one to two pages . Describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program, your preparation for this field of study, and why our program is a good fit for you, your future career plans, and other aspects of your background as well as interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. You may indicate potential faculty mentors as part of your study and research interests. Be sure to keep a copy for your records. What's a Good Statement of Purpose?

A resume or CV  is required of all applicants, depending on which document is most appropriate for your background. There is no page limit for resumes or CVs, though we typically see resumes of one page in length. Please upload your resume or CV in the online application.

Three (3) Letters of Recommendation

Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation . In the online application, you will be asked to identify your recommenders and their email addresses. Please notify your recommenders that they will receive an email prompt to submit their recommendation online. You can submit your request for letters of recommendation through the system without submitting the entire online application.  Stanford GSE only accepts online recommendations through the application system ; Stanford GSE cannot accept mailed, emailed or faxed recommendations.

Recommendations should be written by people who have supervised you in an academic, employment, or community service setting. We very strongly recommend that at least one of these letters be from a university professor familiar with your academic work. Your recommendations should directly address your suitability for admission to a graduate program at Stanford GSE.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all three letters of recommendation are submitted through the system by the application deadline , so please work closely with your recommenders to remind them of the deadline.

College and University Transcripts

Transcripts are required from every college and university you have attended for at least one academic year as a full-time student. When submitting your online application, transcripts should be uploaded to the application as a scanned copy or PDF ; this is sufficient for the application review process. Please refrain from sending a secured PDF/transcript with a digital signature as our system cannot upload these properly. The best way to ensure we receive an upload-able document is for you to print out the secured transcript, scan it, and upload the scanned copy (not to exceed 10MB) as a PDF. 

If you earned a degree at the institution from which you are submitting a transcript, please ensure that the degree conferral date and the degree conferred is clearly visible on the document. If you are currently enrolled in a degree program and will not have earned the respective degree by the time of submitting your GSE application, you should submit your most recent in-progress transcript from your institution.

Only if admitted will we contact you with instructions on sending two copies of your official transcripts to our office. We cannot accept mailed, emailed or faxed copies of your transcripts during the application process. Please note: the instructions for sending transcripts on the online application and on the general Stanford Graduate Admissions Office website differ from this Stanford GSE requirement.

Concerning course work completed in a study abroad program

If the coursework and grades are reflected on the transcript of your home institution, you do not need to submit original transcripts from the study abroad institution.

Concerning foreign institutions

If your institution provides a transcript in a language other than English, we require that you submit a translation of the transcript that is either provided by the institution or a certified translator. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records.

If your transcript does not include your degree conferral date and the degree conferred , please submit a scanned copy of your diploma, a conferral statement, or a conferral document in addition to your transcript . If you are currently enrolled in a degree program and will not have earned the respective degree by the time of submitting your GSE application, you should submit your most recent in-progress transcript from your institution.

Stanford University requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) from all applicants whose native language is not English. The GSE requires a minimum TOEFL score of 250 for the computer-based test, 600 for the paper-based test or 100 for the internet-based test in order to be considered for admission. The Test of Written English (TWE) portion of the TOEFL is not required. Applicants who have completed a four-year bachelor's degree or a two-year master's program (or its equivalent) in the U.S. or at an institution where English is the main language of instruction are not required to take the TOEFL. For more information on TOEFL requirements, please refer to the Required Exams  page on the main Stanford Graduate Admissions website. You may register for the TOEFL test directly at the ETS website .

TOEFL Dates and Deadlines

PhD applicants who are required to take the TOEFL should plan to take the internet-based TOEFL test and have official TOEFL scores sent electronically to Stanford at institution code 4704 (department code does not matter) no later than November 1 . This will give your official TOEFL scores time to be sent from ETS and be received by our system in time for the December 1 deadline. PhD applicants to Knight-Hennessy Scholars should plan to take the internet-based TOEFL test no later than October 16 so your scores can be received by our system in time for the November 16 KHS GSE deadline. Please note that the TOEFL may be taken no earlier than 18 months prior to the application deadline.

Does Stanford accept tests other than TOEFL?

No. We accept only TOEFL scores; we do not accept IELTS or other test scores.

Marie Curie Fellowship Activities & Training Program

The fellowship makes sure that its activities aren’t limited to monetary exchange. Instead, it takes a holistic and result-driven approach to research. Therefore, even though researchers in different fields set out on different tangents, they all go through a series of general activities which includes the following:

Career Development Plan

Every individual researcher works in tandem with the supervisor to sketch out a career development plan that defines their research objectives.

It also plans out their training program in a way that aligns with their career needs. Besides these core objectives, a career development plan schedules the production of research publications and conference participation.

Along with attending conferences, researchers get multiple networking opportunities to grow their network such as,

• Engaging in workshops.
• Being a part of network meetings.
• Collaborating with other individual researchers.
• Meeting with participating organisations and beneficiaries to understand their objectives.

At the end of the training period, every researcher must organise a networking event where they share their research outcomes and forge strong partnerships with fellow researchers.

Public Engagement

Marie Curie Fellowship Eligibility

The Marie Curie Fellowship accepts PhD applications across all disciplines, irrespective of nationalities. The beneficiaries and partner organisations assign projects for every training network beforehand. Prospective students need to look out for a project that interests them and submit an application.

The eligibility criteria for most projects are as follows,

• Relevant Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification that demonstrates your suitability to undertake a doctoral degree.
• Transcript of grades.
• CV showcasing previous work experience and publications.
• Cover letter explaining why your candidature is the best fit for that project.
• Letter of recommendation or two contact references.
• Certificate of language proficiency, if required by the particular discipline.

Marie Curie Fellowship Funding

Most of your expenses are financed throughout the duration of your project. The funding covers the full cost of accommodation and travel. Besides that, you are also given a monthly living allowance.

Depending on your financial conditions, you may also apply for ‘Family Allowance’ and ‘Mobility Allowance’.

Monthly Living Allowance

Beneficiaries pay you living allowance every month in instalments. The allowance depends upon the country you will study and work in. However, for fellowships starting in 2020, this can be up to €4,880 per month.

Mobility Allowance

The costs that include your travel and other related expenses fall under mobility allowance. For fellowships starting in 2020, this can be up to €600 per month.

Family Allowance

Applicants are eligible for a €500 per month family allowance if they have a family, regardless of whether the family moves with them.

Having a family is proven by one of the following,

• Marriage certificate.
• A formal relationship status which stands equal to that of marriage in another region or country.
• Dependent children.

Marie Curie Fellowship Successful Application – Getting Started

The race to getting a PhD grant is highly competitive. Submitting a well-written proposal is not enough to make the cut. What you need to understand is the priorities of the European Commission and the thinking philosophy of the evaluators.

Structure of Application

The proposal comprises two parts – Administrative form (Part A) & Research proposal (Part B)

I) General information

Write the title of the proposal and define a project acronym. You should also include keywords related to your project and a 2000-character abstract for this section.

II) Administrative data of participating organisations

Specify contact information of the host department and the supervisor. Also, add your own information along with your Researcher ID, if you have one.

III) Budget

Once you fill in the duration of your project, cost to the researcher and the host institution, the budget is calculated automatically.

Ethics assessment is a self-declaration. It requires the applicants to fill in an “ethics issue table”.

I) Excellence

Shed light on the quality, originality and credibility of your research. It should start with an introduction, a description, research aim and an overview of the action. You should also mention the research methodology and approach.

Explain how your research will help make advancement in your field. Explore the mutual benefit opportunity you and your host organisation will receive.

Explore the level of impact that your project will have, first on your research career and second on the European economy and society.

Your proposal should also demonstrate that your project will help advance research and make the research profession popular in the mainstream career.

III) Implementation

Brown University awards more than 200 doctor of philosophy degrees annually.

The Brown Ph.D. is primarily a research degree. Teaching is an important part of many doctoral programs, and many departments require candidates for the Ph.D. to have teaching experience.

Brown University offers substantial financial support to doctoral students. All incoming doctoral students are guaranteed five years of support, which includes a stipend, full tuition remission, health-services fee, and a health-insurance subsidy. Doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences are guaranteed six years of support. All promises of student support are subject to students making satisfactory academic progress, as determined by their programs of study. Ph.D. Funding

Funding guarantee, four general requirements for the doctor of philosophy.

The candidate must be formally admitted to his or her degree program.

The normal residency requirement is the equivalent of three Academic Years of full-time study beyond the bachelor's degree. Students who enter a PhD program at Brown already holding a master’s degree in a related field have a residency requirement equivalent to two Academic Years of full-time study upon entering the PhD program at Brown. Use of a previously earned master’s degree to reduce PhD residency requirements is contingent upon approval of the program Director of Graduate Study. Graduate work done at other institutions and not used in fulfillment of the requirements for any doctoral degree elsewhere may, on the approval of the program Director of Graduate Study, be counted in fulfillment of up to, but not exceeding, one year of the residency requirement. A student who desires credit for work done elsewhere should file a timely application with the program Director of Graduate Study; transfer credit forms are available through the  Office of the Registrar .

A student is advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. when he or she has completed satisfactorily all the requirements, departmental and general, requisite to beginning work on the dissertation. Candidacy is determined by the department or program of study and certified by the Registrar. Most departments require a preliminary examination before advancing any student to candidacy. Most departments also require a final examination or defense. The examination is conducted by professors in the department and by such other members of the faculty as may be appointed.

The candidate must present a dissertation on a topic related to his or her area of specialization that presents the results of original research and gives evidence of excellent scholarship. The dissertation must be approved by the professor or committee under whose direction it is written and by the Graduate Council. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed within five years after advancement to candidacy.

Faculty Member Leaves Brown

If a faculty member working with a doctoral student leaves Brown for any reason before that student has completed his or her degree requirements, it may not always be possible for that faculty member to continue working with the student as an advisor. In such cases, departments will work with students to help them locate a new advisor.

Additional Requirements

Individual departments and programs may have additional requirements regarding the number of courses to be taken, proficiency in foreign languages, special examinations, and theses. The department should be consulted for specific information.

How the PhD Program Works

Program Overview

Completing your doctorate at Wharton requires 5 years of full-time study. The first 2 years in the program prepare you for admission to candidacy by taking courses, qualifying exams, and starting research projects. In the last few years, you are primarily conducting research full-time including writing and defending your doctoral dissertation.

Admission to candidacy.

You begin by taking courses required for your program of study. All programs requires a preliminary exam, which may be either oral or written.

Some programs may have further requirements, such as an additional exam or research paper. If you enter with a master’s degree or other transfer credit, you may satisfy the formal course requirements more quickly.

The Doctoral Dissertation

Upon successful completion of coursework and passing a preliminary examination, you are admitted to candidacy for the dissertation phase of your studies.

Your doctoral dissertation should contain original research that meets standards for published scholarship in your field. You are expected to be an expert in the topic you choose to research.

You are admitted to candidacy for the dissertation phase of your studies upon successful completion of coursework and passing a preliminary examination, but you can start thinking about and working on research of relevance at any time.

The dissertation process culminates with a “defense,” in which you defend the proposal orally before your dissertation committee.

While working on your dissertation, you interact extensively with Wharton faculty. Together with interested faculty, you create your own research community that includes your dissertation advisor and dissertation committee.

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

In Canada and the United States, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

What does the Google PhD Fellowship include?

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If students wish to apply for a job at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

• Up to 3 year Fellowship
• US $12K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Google Research Mentor
• 1 year Fellowship
• AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.

Early-stage PhD students

• Up to 4 year Fellowship
• US $50K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Late-stage PhD students

• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• US $15K per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Southeast Asia

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Is my university eligible for the PhD Fellowship Program?

Africa, Australia/New Zealand , Canada, East Asia, Europe and the United States : universities must be an accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students in computer science (or an adjacent field).

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open to universities/institutes in India, Latin America (excluding Cuba), and in eligible Southeast Asian countries/regions (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam).

Restrictions : All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

What are the eligibility requirements for students?

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa: Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia: students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe: Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

What should be included in an application? What language should the application be in?

All application materials should be submitted in English.

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file:

• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) resume/CV of the student's primary PhD program advisor
• Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor's degree to date
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee''s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: What impact would receiving this Fellowship have on your education? Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a Fellowship and what educational goals this Fellowship will enable you to accomplish.
• Transcripts of current and previous academic records
• 1-2 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)

Canada, East Asia, the United States

• Cover sheet signed by the Department Chair confirming the student passes eligibility requirements. (See FAQ "What are the eligibility requirements for students?")
• Short (1-page) CV of the student's primary advisor
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
• Research / dissertation proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)

How many students may each university nominate?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open directly to students with no limit to the number of students that can apply from a university.

How are applications evaluated?

In Canada and the United State, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee's status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Research should align with Google AI Principles .

Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

How are Google PhD Fellowships given?

Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution. No overhead should be assessed against them.

What are the intellectual property implications of a Google PhD Fellowship?

Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. If that is the case, they are subject to the same intellectual property restrictions as any other Google intern.

Will the Fellowship recipients become employees of Google?

No, Fellowship recipients do not become employees of Google due to receiving the award. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If they are interested in working at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Can Fellowship recipients also be considered for other Google scholarships?

Yes, Fellowship recipients are eligible for these scholarships .

After award notification, when do the Google PhD Fellowships begin?

After Google PhD Fellowship recipients are notified, the Fellowship is effective starting the following school year.

What is the program application time period?

Applications for the 2024 program will open in March 2024 and close in May 2024 for all regions. Refer to the main Google PhD Fellowship Program page for each region’s application details.

A global awards announcement will be made in September on the Google Research Blog publicly announcing all award recipients.

The Harvard Ph.D. in Education trains cutting-edge researchers who work across disciplines to generate knowledge and translate discoveries into transformative policy and practice.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.   

Curriculum Information

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of the application deadline. Permanent residents are not eligible. Please review the specific Award Description in relation to the eligibility of dual citizens.
• In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional training and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirement. If you are an Arts applicant and do not hold a BA, please email [email protected] with your professional experience and educational history to confirm eligibility before beginning an application.
• Applicants must meet the language requirements of the award to which they are applying and demonstrate sufficient competency to complete their project and adjust to life in the host country.
• Applicants may hold a J.D. at the time of application.
• Doctors of Medicine may receive grants for advanced academic study, but not for internships or residencies. Scholars with an M.D. degree who have completed their formal postgraduate training and propose attachment to a hospital or clinic for the purpose of independent or collaborative research should apply to the  Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program . Grants shall not authorize activity for which a license to practice medicine or nursing is required. The Fulbright Program cannot authorize proposals for medical research that involves clinical training, patient care or patient contact.
• In general, there is a program preference for those who have not previously held a Fulbright grant. For the 2025-2026 competition, 2024-2025, 2023-2024, and 2022-2023 grantees will be at a competitive disadvantage, but are still eligible to apply, provided they continue to meet all other eligibility requirements of the program and their chosen award.
• Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was undertaken primarily at educational institutions in the United States. Undergraduate study abroad experiences, either in the chosen host country or elsewhere, will not be considered a disadvantage.
• Candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months, not counting undergraduate study abroad, are preferred. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section.
• Candidates who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States will be given preference, provided their qualifications are approximately equivalent to those of other candidates.
• For most programs, applicants who have had extensive, recent previous experience in the host country are at a competitive disadvantage but are still eligible to apply.

Ineligibility

The following are not eligible for consideration:

• For purposes of this section, the one-year period of ineligibility is calculated from the date of termination of employment, service, or association until the due date for submission of applications for program.
•  Employees of the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development. This provision includes all employees, paid or unpaid (including part-time or temporary employees, consultants, externs, fellows and contract employees). This provision does not apply to interns.
• Employees of private and public agencies (excluding educational institutions) under contract to the U.S. Department of State to perform administrative or screening services on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s exchange programs.
• Officers of an organization, in the United States or abroad, including members of boards of trustees or similar governing bodies, or individuals otherwise associated with the organization, wherein the organization and the individuals are responsible for nominating or selecting individuals for participation in any exchange program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
• Board members or staff of a Fulbright Commission.
• Members of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
• If you are unsure if you fall into one of the above categories, please email [email protected] with details of your employment, including start and/or end dates and nature of your job responsibilities, to confirm eligibility for the program.
• Applicants who currently hold or will hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) by the national application deadline.
• Applicants seeking enrollment in a medical degree program abroad.
• If you are unsure of your eligibility in regards to your time spent abroad, please email [email protected] with details of your time both in and outside of the U.S. within the past six years to confirm your eligibility to apply.
• In some cases, it may not be feasible for a dual national to participate in a Fulbright program in the country of their other nationality due to host country law or policy. Therefore, it is the applicant’s responsibility to ascertain whether they have, or are eligible to have, their host country’s nationality and to address any potential consequences thereof before they accept an award. Please refer to the country’s award description to determine the eligibility of dual nationals.
• For most grants, applicants who have had extensive previous experience abroad are at a competitive disadvantage but are not necessarily disqualified for that reason. However, following the policy of the relevant binational Fulbright Commission or the U.S. Embassy in the host country, some countries will not consider applicants who are currently residing in or will be residing in that country during the year preceding the grant. Please refer to the country’s award description to determine if residency in the host country in the year prior to the grant is allowed.

Other Factors Affecting Eligibility

• Candidates may not apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the Fulbright Scholar Program in the same competition cycle.
• Candidates may not apply for more than one Fulbright U.S. Student grant in each competition cycle.

Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

• a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
• support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

• conference attendance
• language training
• overseas research visits
• internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

• non-medical personal assistance
• specialist equipment
• extra travel costs
• general expenses

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

Center for Digital Scholarship

Pre-candidacy

Student: Seeks information on dissertation requirements from program administrators, deans, and the Dissertation Office. Departments, divisions, and schools may have requirements in addition to requirements set by the University.

Dissertation Office: Provides information about the University's dissertation requirements. Welcomes PhD students and encourages their questions at any stage of their academic program.

Dissertation Research and Writing

Student: Seeks assistance from faculty and staff. Requests permission from copyright holders of previously copyrighted material if dissertation use goes beyond fair use.

Dissertation Office: Assists students who want advice or help getting their work into a final form that meets the University’s dissertation requirements. May refer students to additional service points.

Draft Review and/or Workshop

Student: Requests a draft review before the draft review deadline or asks for feedback on sample pages. Registers for workshops of interest at any stage of their academic program.

Dissertation Office: Reviews dissertation drafts during the first few weeks of the quarter. Responds to dissertation-related questions. Holds workshops/information sessions.

Dissertation Defense

Student: Schedules the defense in time for revisions requested by thesis committee to be made and approved before the dissertation deadline.

Dissertation Office: Posts dissertation deadlines.

Application to Graduate

Student: Files a degree application during the first week of the quarter student plans to graduate. Confirms or updates diploma name. (A new degree application must be filed if the degree is delayed to a later quarter.)

Dissertation Office: Throughout the quarter, sends emails to students who appear in AIS report as graduating that quarter.

Post-defense

Student: Puts dissertation into final form for submission. Proofreads for compliance with requirements. Prepare separate 300-500 word abstract.

Dissertation Office: Offers formatting assistance and responds to dissertation-related questions.

Student: If draft has not been reviewed previously, requests a draft review before the draft review deadline. Registers for workshops of interest.

Departmental Approval

Student: Asks department to review dissertation as soon as all revisions and edits are final and have been approved by thesis committee.

Dissertation Office: Provides program administrators with copies of Departmental Approval Form and University-Wide Requirements booklet.

Survey of Earned Doctorates

Student: Registers for Survey of Earned Doctorates while departmental review is underway.

Dissertation Office: Posts information about university surveys.

Dissertation Submission

Student: Submits dissertation to Knowledge@UChicago, the University's open access repository, before the dissertation deadline. Remains in contact with Dissertation Office to address any issues that may arise before graduation.

Dissertation Office: Audits dissertation submission and requests revisions if needed. Updates departmental and divisional/school contacts regarding status of dissertation submissions. Informs Registrar's Office of dissertations submitted and provides list of authors/titles.

Post-graduation

Student: Contacts the Dissertation Office if author needs to renew an embargo at the end of its term or to initiate an embargo after graduation.

Dissertation Office: Coordinates post-graduation embargoes with University Administration.

Doctor of Philosophy

As a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate, you’ll complete a substantial program of independent and original research in your chosen field of study. A PhD prepares you for a range of careers - from academic to industry and is the highest degree qualification available. 

• 3–4 years (full time) minimum commitment of 35 – 40 hours per week or
• 6–8 years (part time) minimum commitment of 15 hours per week.

The minimum requirement for admission to a PhD is:

• A UNSW Bachelor degree with first or upper second class Honours from UNSW; or
• a completed Master by Research from UNSW with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high quality research thesis; or
• an equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC)

The minimum requirement for UNSW Scholarship with admission to a PhD is:

• a four year Bachelor degree with first or upper second class Honours from an Australian institution or equivalent research qualification as above.

Postgraduate Scholarships

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Khalifa University of Science and Technology offers the following scholarships to support qualified international students enrolled in postgraduate programs. The University reserves the right to make changes to the published scholarship benefits and conditions without prior notice.

The scholarship supports international students pursuing a Master’s degree at Khalifa University. Scholarship eligibility is assessed as part of the admission process and applicants are not required to submit a separate scholarship application. The number of available scholarship slots is limited. All applicants are evaluated and mapped to a specific scholarship Tier on the basis of academic merit and other relevant factors, in line with Khalifa University’s strategic priorities, rules and regulations. Meeting the eligibility criteria for a specific Tier does not guarantee a scholarship award.

Tier I and Tier II (Full-Time or Part-Time)

• Full coverage of tuition fees.
• Textbooks provided by the University.
• Free University accommodation for eligible full-time students only.
• Medical insurance coverage for full-time international students sponsored by Khalifa University.
• Mobilization and demobilization flights (between home country and Abu Dhabi) for full-time overseas international students, subject to approval.
• Coverage of UAE visa application fees for full-time international students.

Tier III (Full-Time or Part-Time)

• 50% waiver of tuition fees.

Tier IV (Full-Time or Part-Time)

• Support to attend international research conferences, subject to approval.
• Commitment to work with Khalifa University or a nominated entity upon graduation for a period equivalent to the period of study. The University reserves the right for any reason not to offer the student a post after graduation.

Tier II (Full-Time only)

• Additional monthly allowance of 10,000 AED, subject to approval and meeting scholarship progression criteria.

Tier III (Full-Time only)

• 75% waiver of tuition fees.
• Monthly stipend of 20,000 AED.

Tier IV (Full-Time only)

 Please refer to the Tuition Fees webpage for information on tuition costs.

Study Path (without work commitment)

Students are reassessed for scholarship eligibility annually.

• Monthly stipend of 4,000 AED.
• Monthly stipend of 2,000 AED.
• 25% waiver of tuition fees.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU), in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council (CSC), offers the CSC- KU Scholarship to highly qualified Chinese nationals admitted to PhD in Engineering or Science on a full-time basis.

CSC-KU Scholarship Benefits

• Monthly stipend of 9,200 AED provided by Khalifa University.
• Additional stipend provided by CSC.
• Mobilization and demobilization flights (between China and Abu Dhabi) provided by CSC.
• Full coverage of Khalifa University tuition fees.
• Free Khalifa University accommodation (or accommodation assistance of up to AED 2,000 per month if University accommodation is not available).
• Textbooks provided by Khalifa University..
• Coverage of UAE visa application fees for full-time international students
• Support to attend international research conferences, subject to Khalifa University approval.

Application

• Apply online for the PhD program at Khalifa University
• After receiving the admission offer letter from Khalifa University, candidates must also apply to CSC by completing an application for funding and employer reference (forms are available online at http://apply.csc.edu.cn).

Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible an applicant must:

• Be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China at the time of applying.
• Be approved for unconditional admission to a PhD program at Khalifa University.
• Have official approval for a scholarship award from CSC prior to first registration at Khalifa University.
• The PhD scholarship is awarded to successful applicants for up to a maximum of four academic years.

Other Terms and Conditions

To continue to receive the CSC-KU Scholarship the student must:

• Register as a full-time student every semester, including the summer term.
• Maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 out of 4 during his/her study at Khalifa University.
• Comply with the policies, rules and regulations of Khalifa University.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UAE NATIONAL STUDENTS

Khalifa University of Science and Technology offers the following scholarships to support qualified UAE national students enrolled in postgraduate programs. The University reserves the right to make changes to the published scholarship benefits and conditions without prior notice.

The scholarship supports UAE National students pursuing a Master’s degree at Khalifa University. Scholarship eligibility is assessed as part of the admission process and applicants are not required to submit a separate scholarship application. The number of available scholarship slots is limited. All applicants are evaluated and mapped to a specific scholarship Tier on the basis of academic merit and other relevant factors, in line with Khalifa University’s strategic priorities, rules and regulations. The scholarship supports UAE National students pursuing a Doctoral degree at Khalifa University. Scholarship eligibility is assessed as part of the admission process and applicants are not required to submit a separate scholarship application. All applicants are evaluated and mapped to a specific scholarship Tier on the basis of academic merit, research potential and other relevant factors, in line with Khalifa University’s strategic priorities, rules and regulations. Meeting the eligibility criteria for a specific Tier does not guarantee a scholarship award.

• Basic monthly stipend of 25,000 AED (pensionable).
• Additional monthly allowance of 35,000 AED, subject to approval and meeting scholarship progression criteria.
• Registration in the Abu Dhabi Retirement Pensions and Benefits Fund.
• Additional monthly allowance of 15,000 AED, subject to approval and meeting scholarship progression criteria.
• Monthly stipend of 25,000 AED (pensionable).
• Monthly stipend of 10,000 AED.
• Monthly stipend of 5,000 AED.

The CMDRTS scholarship UAECMDRTS supports students pursuing both, Master and Doctorate degrees, at Khalifa University on a full-time basis. Scholarship benefits include:

• Monthly stipend of 25,000 AED during the Master program (not pensionable).

SCHOLORSHIP REQUIREMENTS

• Applicants must be UAE Nationals.
• Applicants must have graduated from Khalifa University or another well-reputed institution with a minimum CGPA between 3.0 and 3.49. Applicants with a CGPA of 3.5 or higher can apply directly to a PhD program.
• Commitment to apply for and start the PhD program at Khalifa University directly after completing the Master program. The University reserves the right for any reason not to offer the student admission to the PhD program.
• Allocation to the relevant PhD Scholarship Tier will be based on the evaluation of the PhD admission application.

The International Buhooth Scholarship Program is an ambitious initiative that aims to achieve the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, to transform the UAE into a center of excellence in engineering and science research. The initiative offers scholarships to UAE Nationals with the aim of promoting graduate studies and research, as well as developing specialized human capital in the areas of science and engineering for the benefit of national institutions. Students accepted to the International Buhooth program will be registered in selected graduate programs offered by top international universities.

International Buhooth Scholarship Benefits

Please note that scholarship benefits are subject to change.

• Monthly stipend.
• Additional overseas allowance, applicable while student is residing overseas.
• International Buhooth scholarship recipients will receive medical insurance for themselves, their spouse and eligible dependents.
• Recipients of this scholarship are eligible for yearly round trip airline tickets for themselves, their spouse and eligible dependents.

Eligibility Criteria for International Buhooth Scholarship

• Applicants must have graduated from Khalifa University. On an exceptional basis, graduates from other institutions may be considered.
• Applications must be submitted online, through the Khalifa University Admission Portal. Applicants must satisfy the full admission requirements of the Khalifa University academic program that they are applying to with the following minimum CGPA criteria:
• Minimum Bachelor CGPA of 3.50 (or equivalent) for applications to Master’s programs.
• Minimum Bachelor CGPA of 3.50 (or equivalent) and Master CGPA of 3.70 (or equivalent) for applications to PhD programs.
• Applicants must provide an admission offer letter from a top-ranked international institution (preferred top 50 QS or THE ranking). The letter should be submitted at the time of application to Khalifa University.
• The scholarship is open for selected majors only, as determined by Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
• The scholarship is highly competitive and will only be offered to a limited number of successful applicants each year.

DAAD Scholarships - An Overview

Would you like to study, carry out research or learn German in Germany and are you looking for funding? Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe – making it the world's largest funding organisation of its kind. Learn more about our scholarship options.

DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programmes, internships are also funded.

DAAD awards Research Grants – One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates for PhD students from almost all countries of origin. A grant for a full doctoral programme in Germany is offered primarily to applicants from developing and threshold countries (based on the OECD-DAC list ).

Scholarships for a Master's degree in Germany are available, in particular, for persons from industrial countries.

Students and doctoral candidates who are at risk of being denied educational or other rights in their country of origin have the chance to apply for a scholarship from the Hilde Domin Programme . Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the scholarship programme but are nominated by an institution or organisation that is a legal entity domiciled in Germany. Thereafter, suitable candidates will be contacted by the DAAD and invited to apply via the DAAD application portal.

Also available are so-called " Sur-place and Third Country Programmes " in which students and young scientists and researchers are offered DAAD funding for a graduate programme, doctoral programme or postdoc period in their home country or region.

If you wish to apply for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database , paying particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database will take you to the application portal. Scholarship applications are reviewed by independent and voluntary selection committees, which also decide on the allocation of scholarships. Selection is based on subject-related criteria.

DAAD scholarships do not have to be paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment (currently, for example,  € 934 for graduates and € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students) and a flat-rate travel allowance. In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance . Depending on scholarship programme, here are also additional benefits such as a one-off research allowance, family benefits or funds for language courses. The benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are described in the call for applications in the scholarship database .

NAACP scholarships are open for students pursuing a higher education. Here's what to know

T he NAACP has opened its  annual scholarships for students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees this year as part of the Inspire Initiatives program. 

The organization offers need-based and merit scholarships to Black students who are working toward a higher education. 

"Through the generosity of our donors, we advance efforts to ensure equity in educational opportunity that prepares students for success in school, work and life," according to the NAACP website.

What are the requirements for the NAACP scholarships?

Here are the requirements to apply for the NAACP scholarships:

• Need to be a NAACP member
• Need to be an African American or a person of color
• Need to be enrolled full-time or accepted to an accredited college or university in the U.S.
• Need to be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate student or graduate student to apply
• Need to have a grade point average of 3.0 or above
• Demonstrate interest in a relevant field of study to the respected application

What are the NAACP scholarships available?

The NAACP has nine scholarships available for the year:

• Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship : The scholarship is in honor of the late Agnes Jones Jackson, a long-time NAACP-San Francisco branch member. 
• Building Beautiful Futures Scholarship powered by Dark and Lovely : The scholarship is for Black female and female students of color interested in pursuing careers in STEAM or graphic design. 
• Empowering a Better Tomorrow Scholarship powered by Walmart : The scholarship is for the formerly incarcerated or those who have been convicted and who completed their sentence.

• The NAACP Creative Sole Scholarship powered by Vans : The scholarship is for students majoring in creative fields including art, architecture, journalism, music, communications, design, marketing and photography. 
• The NAACP x Society Awards Scholarship : This scholarship is for students pursuing a career in visual/performing arts fields including film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism and mass communications.
• Write Your Future Scholarship powered by Lancôme : This scholarship is for Black students and students of color, who identify as female, pursuing an undergraduate degree.
