Introduction.
Lined paper, ruled paper or writing paper (whatever you call it) is a type of paper that features horizontal lines printed on it. The lines are aimed at separating the lines of your hand-written text in order to make it easy for you to write and then read the text. In comparison with the traditional blank piece of paper or dot grid paper, lined templates make your hand-writing look smooth and ordered.
These templates are often used for calligraphy, noting music, and writing. The simple reason why ruled templates are so useful and popular is that a lot of people aren't good enough at writing in a straight line without a guide. And it's no wonder why. Most of us are so used to typing the text with the keyboards that we totally forget how to write in the longhand.

This is the perfect free printable lined paper . We measured out the lines perfectly so if you print at 100% you will get either college ruled paper or wide ruled printable paper size . Printer paper is a half inch larger than notebook paper so if you want the size to be exact then cut a half inch off the top and the right of the paper. Otherwise this paper is the perfect lined paper template if you need to print paper with lines . This is perfect for teachers and homeschoolers or just for if you ran out of paper and need a quick sheet of free lined paper .

I often get asked what paper I recommend. For regular copy paper this 5 ream case of paper is one of the better deals. For cardstock I really like this card stock paper on amazon . It is much cheaper than I have found in stores and has a good thickness for most projects without being so thick that it jams the printer.

Understanding Types of Lined Paper (Including 5 Lined Paper Printables)
Lined paper is definitely something we take for granted these days; it’s hard to believe there was a time when every lined piece of paper was ruled by hand. Do you know what type of lined paper you prefer? This post is all about lined paper. We’ll discuss the different types of ruled paper available and what each is used for. We’ll also share a number of downloadable lined paper printables.

Let’s make sure we don’t have our lines crossed and begin with a little lined paper history. 😅
What is Lined Paper?
Lined paper, also known as ruled paper, is paper printed with evenly-spaced horizontal lines in order for people to keep their handwriting linear and organized. The lines are usually blue and thin. Lined paper also often comes with two vertical lines on either side of the page, usually pink, to provide margins and tab stops.
Additional vertical lines may be used to create a grid for plotting data, such as graph paper, which is divided into squares by several evenly spaced vertical and horizontal lines.
Before paper was printed like this, the lines had to be drawn by hand. People either ruled their paper with a “hard point” or a “metal point.” A “hard point” was a sharp tool that left embossed lines on the paper without any ink or color. A “metal point” was a tool that left colored line marks on the paper, which looked similar to graphite, but other metals were used as well.
This went on for several centuries until 1770, when a man named John Tetlow received a patent for a line-drawing machine, which he called the “Tetlow,” named after himself. The British government described the device as a “ machine for ruling paper for music and other purposes. ”
Lined paper has evolved considerably since the 1770s and now comes in a wide variety of forms and types. Let’s discuss the different types of lined paper available and what each type is used for.
Types of Lined Paper
College Lined Paper
College lined paper, also known as college ruled paper, has 7.1 mm (9/32 inches) between its horizontal lines, and the vertical margin is 32 mm (1 ¼ inches) from the left-hand edge of the page. This is a very common form of lined paper. The lines are closer together to allow for more words on a single page.
It’s referred to as college lined paper to signify the writer’s maturity; they have ‘graduated’ from using wide lined paper and their handwriting is now smaller and more precise, so they don’t require the larger spacing provided by wide lined paper.

Narrow Lined Paper
Narrow lined paper has lines that are—you guessed it—closer together than other forms of lined paper. The lines on narrow lined paper are 6.4 mm (¼ inches) apart. It’s designed for people with very small handwriting and allows for more words on a single page.
It’s perfect for writing out all the ways you love your dog! Because that couldn’t possibly fit on a regular page!
Wide Lined Paper
Wide lined paper, also known as legal ruled paper, has wider lines than other forms of lined paper. Wide lined paper has 8.7 mm (11/32 inches) between its horizontal lines, and the vertical margin is 32 mm (1 ¼ inches) from the left-hand edge of the page. It’s often used by young students in elementary school to give them extra space as they learn to write numbers and letters, as well as by people who like to keep their handwriting big and bold.

Gregg Ruled Paper
Gregg ruled paper, developed by The Gregg Group , is specialized for stenography and shorthand writing. Shorthand writing is an abbreviated symbolic writing method designed to increase the speed and brevity of writing compared to longhand, which is the regular way we write. Many forms of shorthand exist, each with unique symbols and abbreviations of words and phrases that allow the writer to write as quickly as people speak.
Gregg ruled is three lines to the inch (11/32 inches), with a line down the center to divide the page into two columns—you write down the left side first and then switch to the right side. In courtrooms, stenographers used to have more columns on the page to denote when a new person started speaking.
While the use of shorthand in business, legal, and journalism recording has waned in recent years due to advancements in technology, it is still used as a personal tool.
Graph Paper
Graph paper, also known as grid paper, is paper that’s printed with vertical and horizontal criss crossing fine lines that make up a grid. These lines are most commonly used as guides for plotting graphs of functions or experimental data as well as for drawing curves. It’s commonly found in laboratory notebooks and engineering and mathematics education settings.
There are many different forms of graph paper, including quad paper, which is the most common form, featuring a grid printed in light blue or gray that extends right to the edge of the page.
Another form of graph paper is dot grid paper, which uses dots as intersections instead of grid lines. Dot grid paper has recently become popular for creating unique spreads in bullet journals.

Manuscript Paper
You may remember manuscript ruled paper from your childhood (if you can remember back that far 😅).
Manuscript paper, also known as handwriting paper, is designed to teach small children how to handwrite. The paper contains three lines in each set, and the middle line of each set is dotted. The space between these lines depends on the age of the group of children being taught. Lowercase letters (or, for example, the bottom part of the letter ‘d’) are written between the bottom line and the above dotted line. Uppercase letters occupy the entire space.

If you are looking for free printable lined papers, this is the right place for you. I have here, free printable lined paper templates of straight lines and dotted lines in different row heights and colors for you to print and use, as many as you like.
These free printable lined paper templates (also often called ruled papers) can be put to a whole lot of good use. You can use them for school projects, as academic papers, to practice handwriting (for creative writing process), for writing out your grocery list or your to-do list. You can also print a stack of these templates and staple them together to make lined notebook.
Each free printable lined paper template comes in PDF format (can be opened with an Adobe reader). All you need to do is click on the printer icon on each template to open the print menu. If you choose the colored line pages, choose color option on your printer settings or menu. Otherwise, you can leave it black and white. Click on the print button to print your free pdf file templates.
What is Lined Paper?
Lined paper (also known as ruled paper) is simply a piece of paper with evenly spaced horizontal lines printed or drawn on it. As simple as it may sound, you can find a wide variety of lined paper in the market.
Most common lined papers or ruled papers come in the form of white paper with fine horizontal lines. The lines are mostly black or blue lines, but you can also find some in other different colors and in dotted line. Some even come with a red vertical line on the side.
Lined paper is often used in schools, colleges, kindergartens and also by professionals for formal write-ups. The lines serve as a guide to write and are perfect to practice handwriting among elementary school children. Lined papers are also great for practicing cursive writing.
Here are the factors you need to consider in choosing the free printables (paper templates):
Different line heights
- The wider the space between each line , the lesser lines you will get on your paper and the narrower the lines, the more lines you will get, which means you can write more on a single piece of paper.
- Wide ruled or lined papers are best for children who tend to write in bigger font sizes as compared to college students and adults. Having said that, wide lined papers are also suitable for people with generally large handwriting, vice versa.
Paper sizes
- The free printable paper templates I have on this page are for standard A4 sized sheets of paper.
Color of the lines and style
- Most of the templates on this page come with black lines. I also have some templates in blue lines.
- Some templates come in fine solid lines, while others are drawn in dotted lines and a combination of both.
Types of Lined Paper
Wide lined paper ( wide-ruled paper or legal paper) - these are templates with lines that are 8.7mm apart. In a typical A4 sized paper, you will get approximately 28 lines on a each sheet of paper.
Medium lined paper (medium-ruled paper or College paper) - these are templates with lines that are approximately 7.1mm wide. In a typical A4 sized paper, you will get 37 number of lines on each sheet of paper.
Narrow lined paper (narrow-ruled paper) - these are templates with the most number of horizontal lines. Each line is 6.35mm apart and there are a total of 53 lines on each sheet of paper.
Manuscript paper - There are 2 different types of manuscript paper. The first type is a writing template with groups of 3 lines known as penmanship paper. In this type of manuscript paper, the middle line of each of the group of 3 lines is in dotted form while the remaining top and bottom lines are in straight lines. This paper is perfect for children to practice handwriting. The other type of manuscript paper comes in groups of 5 lines . Also known as music paper , this type of manuscript paper is typically used to draw or write musical notes.
How to choose the free paper printables
As provided above, the printable lined paper templates I have on this page vary by line height, line type and line color and designs. In choosing the templates for printing, make sure you choose the type of template with the correct line height. There are two paper sizes available – US letter and A4 and I’ve created the ruled paper templates in two different colors – yellow and white, so you can use your preferred color. The color of the lines is basic black.
You can save this free printable writing paper as a PNG image or PDF. Open the image to get the PNG printable, or choose the PDF link to get the .pdf version.

These handwriting paper printable templates are A4 size in yellow.
These writing paper printables work just the same as regular paper so you can use a pencil or marker as you would on regular paper. You are essentially just printing the lines on top of your blank paper.
The lined paper template prints on US Letter size or A4 paper. Simply click on the image or the PDF link and save it to your computer before printing.

Edward Dwight Aims for Space at Last
Six decades ago, Mr. Dwight’s shot at becoming the first Black astronaut in space was thwarted by racism and politics. Now, at 90, he’s finally going up.

Edward Dwight is going to space, finally.
In the coming weeks, as conditions allow, Mr. Dwight is expected to be part of a six-person crew heading into space on the latest mission of Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos. Blue Origin’s seventh human flight will carry an array of adventurers including a venture capitalist, a craft-beer entrepreneur from France, a retired accountant who has been told by doctors that she is going blind, and Mr. Dwight, a retired Air Force captain who 60 years ago was chosen, and then passed over, to be the first Black man to orbit Earth.
Mr. Dwight wound up in the astronaut training program at Edwards Air Force Base in California in the early 1960s under the command of Chuck Yeager. (In 1947 General Yeager became the first test pilot to break the sound barrier; he died in 2020. ) Mr. Dwight was a charismatic, handsome test pilot, a public relations dream for an administration looking to lead on civil rights. President Kennedy was a supporter, but General Yeager was not impressed; according to a well-chronicled history , General Yeager described Mr. Dwight as an average pilot who had been placed on the A-list for political reasons. Mr. Dwight had a different account, recalling General Yeager as a racist who wanted him removed. His height — 5 feet 4 inches — was also a disadvantage, Mr. Dwight recalled.
After the assassination of Mr. Kennedy in 1963, Mr. Dwight was not selected to go to space. The would-be astronaut left the Air Force in 1966 and went on to other successes, including as a restaurateur and real estate developer in Colorado and, eventually, as a celebrated sculptor of prominent figures in Black history .
In conversations spanning several months, Mr. Dwight spoke to The New York Times about his impending spaceflight. The interviews have been condensed and edited for clarity.
How do you feel about going to space?
It’s a culmination of a long life of events. I’ve thought this would be a nice end of a fascinating story about all I’ve gone through and my reaction to adverse conditions.
Everything I’ve done has been an uphill battle: getting into the military and being an Air Force pilot, getting chosen by the president of the United States to be the first Black astronaut, and facing all kinds of obstacles in the years that I was in that program. But I was performing well, and that’s why they would say, ‘Oh my God, this guy’s getting things done,’ and my Blackness and my shortness didn’t mean a damn thing.
Then, after I left the Air Force, I came to Colorado and became a big-time businessman — and then started an art career at the age of 45. My whole life has been about getting things done. This is the culmination.
What is your prevailing emotion now — anger? That you’ve been lucky? Or something else?
I’m not angry and I’m not lucky; neither of those things is in my mind. When you get angry, your brain stops working. I couldn’t even think about getting angry or disappointed about anything; that’s my psychological makeup, I guess. When I came across people that might have caused me a setback, I rationalized: Why did they feel that way?
Chuck Yeager was taught as a kid that Black people were ignorant and stupid and couldn’t do a damn thing. He and I had conversations about it, and so, no, I had no anger toward him. People are products of their background, and there wasn’t a damn thing I was going to do to change his attitude.
The only thing I could do was show Yeager that I could do anything that was expected of me and transcend. In no way could he throw me out or get rid of me.
Why would he want you thrown out?
We’d have these conversations, and this guy would pull out a sheet of paper that he carried — a folded piece of yellow, lined paper that had all these names — and he’d say, “Captain Dwight, I got 100 and 50 white boys on this list, and every one of these white boys are more qualified than you to be a test pilot.”
And I’d say: “So are you telling me that all these white guys are superior? Every street at Edwards is named after a dead test pilot, and every one of those guys is white and dead. They had to have made mistakes somewhere along the line to be have a street named after them. Don’t come to me with this stuff about how smart and witty and brilliant and able white people are versus Black people.”
There were 17 people in my class, and I finished seventh. I had to remind him of that.
You faced numerous obstacles to getting to space.
The power brokers were not going to give the last frontier to a Black person or a woman.
So, now, a guy who didn’t get to fly into space when he was supposed to, is going at 90, at the end of his career. Some people think of that as justice. But I don’t think that way. It seems far too late for it to be justice. My philosophy is that everything has a time and place. This is a natural occurrence that should have happened at some point.
What do you think you will see when you’re up there?
During my flight-test days, I went high enough to see the curvature of Earth, the totality of the land, to look at Earth as a big ball. But I am curious. We’re laying down in the capsule, and you’ve got this big panoramic window. I’m definitely putting this in my gee-whiz file.

America is the guiding light of the world. Anybody who thinks about running for national office should take at least three orbits around Earth as a prerequisite. They should look down at how valuable it is and how sacred it is and how fragile.
