In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

About this book

About the editors

J. Paulo Davim received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1997, M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering (materials and manufacturing processes) in 1991, Mechanical Engineering degree (5 years) in 1986, from the University of Porto (FEUP), the Aggregate title (Full Habilitation) from the University of Coimbra in 2005 and the D.Sc. from London Metropolitan University in 2013. He is Senior Chartered Engineer by the Portuguese Institution of Engineers with an MBA and Specialist title in Engineering and Industrial Management. He is also Eur Ing by FEANI-Brussels and Fellow (FIET) by IET-London. Currently, he is Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience in Manufacturing, Materials, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, with special emphasis in Machining & Tribology. He has also interest in Management, Engineering Education and Higher Education for Sustainability. He has guided large numbers of postdoc, Ph.D. and master’s students as well as has coordinated and participated in several financed research projects. He has received several scientific awards. He has worked as evaluator of projects for ERC-European Research Council and other international research agencies as well as examiner of Ph.D. thesis for many universities in different countries. He is the Editor in Chief of several international journals, Guest Editor of journals, books Editor, book Series Editor and Scientific Advisory for many international journals and conferences. Presently, he is an Editorial Board member of 30 international journals and acts as reviewer for more than 100 prestigious Web of Science journals. In addition, he has also published as editor (and co-editor) more than 125 books and as author (and co-author) more than 10 books, 80 book chapters and 400 articles in journals and conferences (more than 250 articles in journals indexed in Web of Science core collection/h-index 53+/9000+ citations, SCOPUS/h-index 57+/11000+ citations, Google Scholar/h-index 75+/18000+).

Computational Social Science

The design and operation of networks requires technical concepts such as information theory, algorithms, and optimization, but also depends on economic, social, and even political factors.

One example is the concept of net neutrality, in which infrastructure providers seeking to recoup their investments by charging differently based on bandwidth consumption come into conflict with users who oppose making economic distinctions related to information content. The department has deep expertise in all facets of these and other problems of technology implementation and usage in the real world.

The Society & Algorithms Lab (SOAL) combines computer science and algorithms with social science and economics in response to two recent trends: the rise of more powerful information technology and algorithms, and an increase in networked social and economic interactions.

Decision and Risk Analysis

MS&E Professor Ron Howard pioneered the field of decision analysis starting in 1964. And MS&E continues to lead in the field today.

Although many people make personal decisions instinctively and haphazardly, a more serious approach essential for management is to analyze the problem as a three-legged structure of preferences, alternatives, and available information in the context of a frame.

The mission of the Engineering Risk Research Group (ERRG) , led by department Professor M. Elisabeth Pate-Cornell, is the analysis, mathematical modeling, and management of the safety of engineering systems using probabilistic methods and systems analysis. Recently, the members of the ERRG have extended the application of these methods to the domains of medical operations and devices, national security, and the strategy of firms in the financial industry with the objective of identifying the most cost-effective risk-reduction measures within these complex systems. Technical, organizational, and strategic solutions are considered, and decision analysis is often used to make the final choice among a spectrum of risk-mitigation options.

Operations Research

Research focuses on developing and applying analytical, computational, and economic tools to address a wide variety of problems in business, government, and society.

The area is characterized by its mathematical depth, broad applicability, and interdisciplinary nature and has a particular emphasis in developing and applying models and algorithms to gain new insights and make better decisions across multiple domains.

Operations research is distinguished by its combination of foundational methodological research with applications and translation to practice.  The methodological foundations of operations research include: linear and nonlinear optimization; applied probability and stochastic modeling; simulation; statistical methodology; algorithms; dynamic programming and reinforcement learning; and game theory, market design, and microeconomic theory.  Research in this area often combines ideas across these methodological foundations to develop new techniques that are matched to emerging needs driven by applications; for example, many modern advances in machine learning are driven by advances at the interface of optimization, algorithms, and stochastic analysis, and a rich frontier in market design involves the interface of computational and economic theories.

In turn, these methodological foundations have significant impact on practice.  Faculty in operations research have consistently contributed to both methodological innovation, and instantiation of those methodological innovations in applied domains.  Interaction with applications further inspires novel frontiers for methodological research.  Significant areas of application include: school choice; design of kidney exchanges; design of pricing and matching algorithms for online platforms; operations management for health care; computational methods for social choice and collective decision-making; analysis and control of epidemics; and energy efficient management of buildings.

Research activities in the  operations research group  are broad and extensive. They include projects in optimization, stochastics, operations management, reinforcement learning, algorithms, market design and more.

Organizations, Technology and Entrepreneurship

Research spans the study of technical work, technology's effects on individuals and teams, the formation and growth of entrepreneurial firms, and strategy and innovation in technology-based firms.

Some projects examine the role of technology in the work of engineers, including the interplay between workplace technologies and engineering knowledge, on-the-job learning, problem-solving, and coordination. Other research investigates the dynamics of globally distributed work teams, the implications of contracting and outsourcing, human-robot interaction in the workplace, and evidence-based management.

At the firm-level, research examines how entrepreneurial firms gain financing, build alliance networks, and grow. Other investigations center on established firms, including creating successful R&D collaborations across businesses, effectively competing against other firms, and entering new markets. Researchers also study strategies that enable established organizations to discover, develop, and commercialize technologies.

The department is home to premier teaching programs in these areas including Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) and the Center for Work, Technology and Organizations (WTO) , a world-class center dedicated to understanding how work is changing and how to design more effective organizations and technologies.

Policy and Strategy

Research and teaching in this area focus on the design and analysis of public policies and corporate strategies, especially those with technology-based issues.  Sub-areas include Energy and Environment, Health Systems Modeling and Policy, and National Security Policy

It features a grounding in microeconomics and modeling approaches. Courses with a policy focus include such topics such as national security, energy and environment, and health care. Courses with a strategy focus cover topics such as entrepreneurship, innovation, and product development.

The Energy Modeling Forum (EMF) seeks to improve the use of energy and environmental policy models for making important corporate and government decisions. Systems Utilization Research For Stanford Medicine (SURF Stanford Medicine) facilitates the delivery of world class advances in medical care through world class advances in hospital operations.

Quantitative Finance

Research and teaching in the department cover a range of topics including investments, economic growth, natural resources and energy, entrepreneurship, and microeconomics.

Through systematic analysis and application of sophisticated mathematical tools, engineers make vital contributions to understanding commodities, credit, currencies, derivatives, equities, pricing, profits, resources, and other core economic and financial concepts.

The  Advanced Financial Technologies Laboratory  at Stanford University pioneers financial models, statistical tools, computational algorithms, and software to address the challenges that arise in this context. Faculty and doctoral students of AFT combine expertise in core areas such as stochastics, optimization, data science, and networks and algorithms with a deep understanding of financial markets and institutions to make fundamental advances of broad relevance.

How Marketers Can Adapt to LLM-Powered Search

With the addition of AI-generated overviews, Google, Perplexity, OpenAI and other search engines are changing how consumers find information.

Large language models (LLMs) provide a search experience that’s dramatically different from the web-browser experience. The biggest difference is this: LLMs promise to answer queries not with links, as web browsers do, but with answers . Increasingly, using apps such as ChatGPT or Perplexity, or search portals such as Google’s Search Generative Experience (now AI Overviews) or Bing’s Copilot, customers will learn about products and brands through natural-language outputs. And that process, which will be highly consultative and conversational, will create a new information pipeline that marketers need to monitor to ensure their brands are presented for relevant prompts and described accurately. The authors present three ways for marketers to rise to this challenge.

Advertisement for Scholarships for Master of Business Research

Master of Business Research (MBR) is a new two-year masters level program that is being offered at Department of Management Science and Project Planning, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, University of Nairobi, in collaboration with Kuehne Logistics University, Hamburg, Germany. The scholarships are offered through the Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Operations for Resource Management and Food Supply (SCO) established with the financial support of DAAD. The Centre brings together University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Dar El Salaam (UDBS), the Kuehne Logistics University (KLU) and Kühne Foundation to jointly contribute to enhanced skills and knowledge in business research.

The MBR program will offer students advanced training in research skills, techniques, and methodologies to conduct high quality and original research in business and related disciplines. Successful candidates will learn from highly interdisciplinary team drawn from professors and industry professionals in operations management, supply chains, business economics and management science. This will holistically equip students with requisite skills and knowledge on business operations and research which have been missing in the conventional business management trainings, making the program unique.

Who can apply? One can apply for the scholarship if they meet the following criteria:  An earned BSc/BA or MA/MBA/MSc or related degree in business studies, business administration, Entrepreneurship, agribusiness management, economics, operations management, management science, supply chains and related fields  Outstanding academic performance with Second Class Upper Division of above for undergraduate or equivalent GPA score  Experience in undertaking basic research in agribusiness, business studies, supply chains, operations management or related fields will be an added advantage  Basic analytical and research skills using relevant data analysis softwares  Excellent written and spoken English Application documents Application documents to be submitted should include: 1. Hand signed motivation letter of not more than 1 page written in Times New Romans, font 12 and single spaced 2. Copies of academic degree certificates 3. Copies of academic transcripts, incl. grading-scale 4. Copies of school final national exam certificates 5. One letter of recommendation from a senior academic person conversant with your academic background (must be on a letterhead, hand signed and officially stamped and of recent date) 6. Copy of Curriculum Vitae

Programs overview The program will take two years on full-time basis starting from October 2024. The first year will be dedicated to course work and at the same time, the candidate will be expected to develop their proposal with support from the supervisors. The subsequent one year will be dedicated to research work including data collection, analysis, preparation of publication papers and final thesis report. The program priority research areas are: Business Research, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics or related subjects.

Supervision and support The candidates will have a supervisor from UoN and if possible external supervisors from UDSM or an international professor from KLU or from the global Kuehne Foundation academic network. They will also have many great opportunities to enhance their scientific and professional skills from the pool of professors in the Africa Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Operations for Resource Management and Food Supply (SCO).

Publications Although publications are not mandatory for this program, candidates are encouraged to publish at least one journal article before graduating. 

Scholarship

There will be a scholarship to cover the costs in full for the first year, and pro-rata for the period October-December 2025.

RSAC 2024 Review: AI & Data Governance Priorities

RSAC, we are so back. If I thought RSA Conference  returned last year in full force , the 2024 edition proved to be an even more formidable contender as the innovation hub for the cybersecurity industry worldwide.

Coming off a year of high-profile breaches, rapid AI innovation and adoption, an  unprecedented volume of federal elections , and geopolitical conflict around the world, RSA Conference became the conversation platform for the urgent advancement of cybersecurity programs and strategies.

Sessions captured the spirit of cyber moving centerstage for federal governments and agencies, multinational corporations, and regional entities as a leading consideration in the way organizations operate today. At the same time, the show floor displayed key trends in the technology landscape and mirrored some of the most notable priorities security leaders are pursuing today.

Data Protection and Data Governance

Whether in conversation with chief information security officers, walking the show floor, or popping into panel discussions at Moscone, data security surfaced in every corner of the conference as an evolution or perhaps even a replacement of last year’s “Zero Trust Washing” on the ground.

In particular, data governance emerged as a top priority as data availability, usability, integrity, and security continues to be scrutinized and held to higher regulatory and organizational standards. Data security posture management (DSPM) and – and to a lesser extent – data detection and response (DDR) were the enabling technologies present in data governance conversations. Today, organizations are motivated to tick off proactive defense (DSPM) and resilient protection (DDR) objectives, develop exfiltration resistant security practices, and answer the questions

  • Where is my data living?
  • Who can access data?
  • What are the present risks to my data?
  • What security protocols and policies should be applied?
  • What is my data security posture?
  • Has there been a material change to data or data access?

Tasteful AI Execution and Tackling AI Risk and Threats

The AI conversation at Moscone was both prolific and surprisingly actionable and realistic.

The start-up community came prepared with timely solutions for machine-to-machine (non-human identity) risks scaling in an AI-driven world, opportunities to mitigate the threat of synthetic media as social engineering, deepfake and audiofake threats proliferate. Following major headlines, we know now that synthetic media has the power to affect anyone. Cybersecurity technology vendors, federal governments, and social media platform providers will need to work in tandem to get in front of this challenge in the weeks and months ahead.

Unique approaches to secure AI deployment within the enterprise were also top of mind at RSAC. Trend was firmly in the generative AI conversation as we launched our AI Gateway ahead of the conference, providing security teams with available tooling to centralize the management of employee access and use of AI applications (like ChatGPT and others), inspect prompts to prevent data leaks, filter content to meet compliance requirements, and defend against LLM attacks.

Generative AI opportunities for the SOC continued from last year as security pros offered more use cases for platform cybersecurity assistants. My prediction for the SOC in 2024 is a shift from user-initiated AI experiences (i.e. exclusively chat-style interfaces) to AI-initiated user experiences, where generative AI assistants surface prioritization, tasks, and guidance proactively and in-context based on telemetry sources and threat intelligence feeds.

Proactive Mindset and Security Posture Management (SPM) at the Forefront

Point solutions for layer-specific SPM were highly visible on the show floor. From AI-SPM, application SPM, or the previously mentioned DSPM, the trend toward proactive security was heavily on display. This mindset shift, led by Trend with the introduction of Attack Surface Risk Management in 2022, has become mainstream as security teams prioritize accurate asset inventory across internal, external, and human attack surfaces. While promising to see greater interest, innovation, and uptake in security posture management

  • Cyber risk management is largely ineffective when done in siloes. Point strategies to security posture management lack the necessary prioritization and contextualization of risk present in the enterprise environment, making it challenging for analysts to focus efforts on the most critical tasks at hand.
  • Security posture management without remediation guidance or action provides a long list of problems with little solutions.
  • Risk identification and scoring remains challenging and inconsistent. Risk formula calculation must be available and exposed to users to be considered a valid and trustworthy metric.

Trend Attack Surface Risk Management provides an integrated security posture management experience extending asset discovery and inventorying to include continuous risk assessment/scoring, prioritization across asset types (i.e. cloud, data, users, devices, IP/domain), generative AI driven remediation guidance, and in-console remediation action options.

NGSIEM and XDR convergence begins

If the last RSAC was marked by the XDR explosion, this year the conversation was balanced by the emerging market category, NGSIEM, as security teams demand more out of their SIEM investment.

For platform players to meet demand, acknowledgement of the need for security analytics and detection engineering across third-party telemetry feeds is required. Across company size, organizations today have deployed EDR and XDR for stronger security outcomes compared to legacy SIEM – which often acts as an expensive solution to limited compliance requirements. Now with the evolution of NGSIEM, the value of detections on top of third-party data and enriching existing events in the enterprise environment and developing brand new detections from third parties can help close the gap between different products being used in the security stack and improve key metrics like MTTD and MTTR.

In the mid-market specifically, XDR with NGSIEM capabilities (i.e. integration and ingestion of telemetry feeds from third parties), solves a massive challenge by delivering detection and response use cases more efficiently with less time and less engineering resources required. As NGSIEM picks up speed, security buyers may consider managed NGSIEM or SOC-as-a-service options to take on more of the heavy lifting as even a well-staffed SOC can benefit from support on detection modelling.

From a security outcomes perspective, native XDR is still the most effective option to detect and respond to threats. From a deployment and feasibility perspective, NGSIEM offers a realistic detection and response option for very large entities and entities who carry significant tech debt. My caution to security buyers, vendors pitching NGSIEM should be able to demonstrate an evolution, not merely a rebrand of a failed XDR strategy.

2023 Prediction Scorecard

In our 2023 RSAC round-up, I captured four categories of innovation where I expected to see movement in the market:

Risk Prioritization: We saw some improvement in technology risk prioritization solutions – however siloed, point-solution approaches left me wanting more.

Cyber Risk Quantification : Board-level advocacy and using cyber risk quantification to up-level the importance and influence of cybersecurity as an operations and reputation risk vector was highly present. Security leaders explicitly identified risk indexes and even financial translation of cyber risk as important tools in their kit to argue for greater investment, headcount, and additional resources.

Generative AI Governance : Several AI governance solutions from the start-up community and from major players – including Trend Micro – were present on the show floor as SaaS applications integrate AI into their technologies and as AI use and abuse scales.

Merger and Acquisitions Volume : The show floor did in fact look different, with key players consolidating with large entities. I expect this trend to continue into 2024 as investment deals lower by volume and dollar amount.
