தயாரிப்பு - ஆர்பி பிலிம்ஸ் இயக்கம் - ஆர்.பி. பாலா இசை - ரோபின் ரபேல் நடிப்பு - பரத், வாணி போஜன், விவேக் பிரசன்னா வெளியான தேதி - 28 ஜுலை 2023 நேரம் - 1 மணி நேரம் 43 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 1.5/5 'லவ்' எனப் பெயரை வைத்துவிட்டு 'லவ்வே' இல்லாமல் ஒரு படத்தைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். அழகான ஒரு காதல் கதைக்கு வைக்க வேண்டிய பெயரை 'கள்ளக் காதல்கள்' கொண்ட ஒரு படத்திற்கு வைத்து வீணடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். 2021ல் மலையாளத்தில் வெளிவந்த 'லவ்' என்ற திரைப்படத்தை அப்படியே ரீமேக் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். 'புலி முருகன், குரூப்' உள்ளிட்ட மலையாள டப்பிங் படங்களுக்கு தமிழில் வசனம் எழுதிய ஆர்.பி.பாலா இப்படத்தை இயக்கியிருக்கிறார். முழு படமும் ஒரு அபார்ட்மென்ட் வீட்டுக்குள்ளேயே நகர்கிறது. ஒரு நாடகத்தைப் பார்ப்பது போன்ற உணர்வுதான் வருகிறதே தவிர, படத்தைப் பார்க்கிறோம் என்ற உணர்வு ஏற்படவில்லை.

பணக்கார வீட்டுப் பெண் வாணி போஜன். அவரது அப்பா ராதாரவி சொல்லி பரத்தை சந்தித்து திருமணம் பற்றி பேச வருகிறார். பிசினஸ் ஆரம்பித்து தோற்றுப் போனவர் பரத். அப்பா திடீரென வேண்டாமென்று சொல்லியும் பரத்தைத் திருமணம் செய்து கொள்கிறார் வாணி. ஆனால், இருவரது திருமண வாழ்க்கையும் மகிழ்ச்சியாக இல்லை. தாய்மை அடைந்த செய்தியை மருத்துவமனையில் உறுதி செய்துவிட்டு வீட்டிற்க வரும் வாணியிடம் சண்டை போட்டு அவரைக் கொன்றும் விடுகிறார் பரத். திடீரென காலிங் பெல் அடிக்க, வாணியின் உடலை பாத்ரூமில் மறைத்து வைக்கிறார். பரத்தின் நெருங்கிய நண்பர் விவேக் பிரசன்னா வீட்டிற்குள் வர, மனைவியைக் கொன்ற நிலையில் அடுத்து என்ன செய்வது என யோசிக்கிறார் பரத். இதன் பின் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. படம் முழுவதும் வெறுப்பைக் காட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு கதாபாத்திரத்தில் பரத். பிசினஸில் தோல்வியடைந்த, வேறு எதையும் சரியாக முயற்சிக்காத பொறுப்பில்லாத ஒரு கணவர். படத்தில் அவர் நடித்ததை விட குடித்ததுதான் அதிகமாக இருக்கும். அந்த 'சரக்கு' பாட்டில் குடிக்கக் குடிக்கக் குறையாமல் இருக்கிறது. அப்படி ஒரு 'சரக்கு' கிடைத்தால் குடிமகன்களுக்கு செலவு குறையும். வாணி போஜனுக்கு ஆரம்பத்தில் ஓரிரு காட்சிகள், அதோடு கிளைமாக்சில் மட்டும். மற்ற நேரங்களில் பாத்ரூமில் பிணமாக சுருண்டு கிடக்கிறார். பரத்தின் நெருங்கிய நண்பராக விவேக் பிரசன்னா. அவரது மனைவியை அவரது நண்பன் ஒருவரே கள்ளக் காதல் புரிகிறார் என பரத் வீட்டில் வந்து புலம்பிக் கொண்டு கூட சேர்ந்து குடிக்கிறார். வேறொருவரின் மனைவியான தனது முன்னாள் காதலியை அழைத்துக் கொண்டு பரத் வீட்டிற்கு வருகிறார் டேனி அனி போப். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அது வீடா இல்லை 'லோக்கல்' லாட்ஜா என யோசிக்க வைக்கிறது. ஒரே வீட்டை எப்படியாவது விதவிதமான கோணங்களில் காட்ட வேண்டும் என நிறையவே முயன்றிருக்கிறார் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் முத்தையா. ரோனி ரபேல் பின்னணி இசையும் படத்தைக் காப்பாற்ற முயற்சிக்கவில்லை. ஒரு படம் என்றால் அதில் ஏதாவது ஒரு விஷயமாவது ரசிக்கும்படி இருந்தால் ரசிகர்களால் கொஞ்சமாவது ரசிக்கப்படும். அப்படி எவ்வளவு தேடினாலும் இந்தப் படத்தில் எதுவும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. 'காதல்' என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் ரசிகர்களின் மனதில் ஒரு இடத்தைப் பிடித்த பரத்தின் 50வது படம் இந்த 'லவ்'. அப்போது வந்த 'காதல்' கவர்ந்தது, இப்போது வந்த இந்த 'லவ்' கசக்கிறது. லவ் - அவ்வ்வ்வ்வ்வ்…

Love review: Director RP Bala’s thriller is far-fetched from reality and simply falls flat

This Tamil remake of a Malayalam film with the same name is neither as emphatic nor convincing as its original with regard to domestic violence.

Director RP Bala’s Love , which happens to be the Tamil remake of a Malayalam film with the same name, begins on a promising note only to disappoint us in the end.

The film, supposed to be a thriller, offers no thrills whatsoever and struggles to retain your attention.

RP Bala’s Love is a faithful reproduction of the Malayalam version which featured Rajisha Vijayan and Shine Tom Chacko in the lead.

However, the difference between both versions lies in the intensity they offer.

Divya (Vani Bhojan) meets Ajay (Bharath), a prospective alliance, and chooses to wed him despite her father’s warning that he might not be an ideal match since he lost everything in business.  

The fact that Ajay tells Divya that they need to postpone the decision to have a child till the time he sets things right does not help matters.

A year or two into the marriage, the relationship between the couple sours. They are constantly at loggerheads.

One day, Divya finds out that she is in the initial stages of pregnancy. She calls her husband from the clinic but does not get a response. On returning home, she finds soiled plates lying outside the sink and Ajay drinking and playing video games. She loses her cool and confronts him.

Tempers flare up on both sides and one thing leads to another. The verbal altercation between Divya and Ajay soon turns physical, resulting in Ajay smashing Divya’s head against a piece of glass.

She dies and Ajay, who is in a drunken stupor, is stunned at the sudden unexpected development. He drags her body to the bathroom and begins to wonder what to do next.

Not upto the mark.

The Tamil version of Love is neither as emphatic nor as convincing as its Malayalam counterpart when it comes to highlighting the issue of domestic violence.

While Love ‘s motive in looking to highlight the issue of domestic violence is laudable, the fact that the story is presented from a feminist’s point of view cannot be denied.

As a result, all the significant male characters in the movie are made to come across as monsters.

For instance, the three main male characters in the film.

Ajay (played by Bharath) is a loser, a cheat, and a man with a violent temper. However, his wife Divya is an accomplished, talented individual who, despite being the daughter of an exceptionally rich businessman, does not want to run her dad’s concern but to prove herself.

That’s not all. Despite Divya being a more accomplished person than Ajay and the fact that she could have got a match with a much better social standing than Ajay, she agrees to marry him.

It’s almost like she takes pity on him and does him a favour by marrying him.

Next, take a look at Vivek Prasanna’s character. He appears as a dear friend of the protagonist Ajay in the film and dons a character that is again portrayed as a loser in business.

His character wants to commit suicide; he drinks, pukes, and acts irresponsibly. What’s more, he suspects his wife of having an affair and intends to kill the man with whom he thinks she is having an affair.

The third character played by Daniel Pope, is again shown as a person being disloyal to his wife, who, on the other hand, is shown as a responsible person.  

That Vivek Prasanna and Daniel Pope’s characters go on to become imaginary characters at a later point in the film is another issue.

There seems to be a sly attempt at demonising all men in the film Love .

For instance, this dialogue that Vivek Prasanna utters. He justifies Ajay’s killing of his wife saying, “Is there a man who does not want to kill his wife?”

This is nothing but a sad attempt to generalise and paint all men as potential wife-beaters waiting for an opportunity to indulge in domestic violence.

Further, Love’s story is hard to relate to and far-fetched from reality. The flick also leaves several questions unanswered and makes the message the film is looking to send across unclear.

Well, these are some of the reasons why you don’t find Love interesting and in a way, feel relieved when it ends.

Love Movie Review in Tamil: ஆர்.பி.பிலிம்ஸ் சார்பில் ஆர்.பி.பாலா தயாரித்து இயக்கியுள்ள படம் லவ். இந்தப் படத்தில் பரத் வாணி போஜன் விவேக் பிரசன்னா பிக் பாஸ் டானி ராதாரவி உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் நடித்துள்ளனர். பிஜி முத்தையா ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்துள்ள இந்த படத்திற்கு ரோனி ரபேல் இசையமைத்துள்ளார். ஏற்கனவே இந்த படத்தின் டீசர் ட்ரெய்லர் இரண்டும் பெரும் வரவேற்பு பெற்ற நிலையில் படம் ஜூலை 28ஆம் தேதி வெளியாக உள்ளது அதன் விமர்சனத்தை இங்கு காணலாம். 

படத்தின் கதை 

தம்பதிகளான பரத் - வாணிபோஜன் இடையே ஒரு நிகழ்வில் வாக்குவாதம் முற்றி கைகலப்பு ஆகிறது. இதில் பரத்தின் கோபத்தினால் வாணிபோஜன் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். அவரது உடல் பாத்ரூமில் மறைத்து வைக்கப்படுகிறது. இதனைத் தொடர்ந்து பரத் தற்கொலைக்கு முயற்சிக்கிறார். 

அப்போது அந்த வீட்டுக்குள் மனைவியுடன் ஏற்பட்ட சண்டையின் காரணமாக குழப்பத்தில் இருக்கும் நண்பர் விவேக் பிரசன்னா வருகிறார். அடுத்த சிறிது நேரத்தில் மனைவிக்கு தெரியாமல் இன்னொரு பெண்ணுடன் உறவில் இருக்கும் பிக்பாஸ் டேனியும் வருகிறார். நடுவே வாணிபோஜனின் அப்பா ராதாரவியும் வந்து செல்கிறார். ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் விவேக் பிரசன்னா, டேனி இருவருக்கும் உண்மை தெரிய வருகிறது.உடலை எப்படி அப்புறப்படுத்துவது என யோசிக்கிறார்கள். அப்போது மீண்டும் கதவின் பெல் அடிக்கப்படுகிறது. திறந்து பார்த்தால் அங்கு வாணி போஜன் நிற்கிறார். 

அதேசமயம் விவேக் பிரசன்னா, டேனி இருவரும் காணாமல் போகிறார்கள். அப்படி என்றால் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டது யார்? .. நண்பர்கள் இருவரும் காணாமல் போக என்ன காரணம்.. இவற்றுக்கெல்லாம் என்ன தான் முடிவு  என்பதை லவ் படம் விளக்குகிறது.

நடிப்பு எப்படி? 

பரத் உடல் எடையை கூட்டி, அழகாக காட்சியளிக்கிறார். ஆனால் மனைவியை கொலை செய்த பயம் முகத்தில் இல்லாவிட்டாலும், உணர்வுகளிலாவது இருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால் அப்படி எதுவும் இல்லாதது மைனஸாக உள்ளது. இவரும் வாணிபோஜனும் அசல் கணவன் - மனைவி சண்டையை கண் முன்னால் நிறுத்துகிறார்கள். அதிலும் வாணிபோஜன் இறந்துப் போன நிமிடத்திலும் அழகான கண் சிமிட்டா பொம்மையாக காட்சியளிக்கிறார். ஒரு காட்சியில் வந்தாலும் பாசமிகு தந்தையாக ராதாரவி கேரக்டர் சிறப்பு. விவேக் பிரசன்னா, டேனி இருவரும் கொடுத்த கேரக்டருக்கு ஓரளவு நியாயம் சேர்த்துள்ளார்கள். 

படம் பார்க்கலாமா எப்படி? 

மலையாளத்தில் 2020 ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளியான லவ் படத்தின் ரீமேக் தான் இப்படமாகும். படத்தின் மையக்கரு ஒரு பிரச்சினையை பற்றி பேசினாலும் தம்பதியினர் இடையே இருக்கும் ஈகோ பிரச்சினையை சிறப்பாக படமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. குடும்பத்தில் நடக்கும் வன்முறை சம்பவங்கள் தொடங்கி, வீட்டுக்கு வீடு பிரச்சினை எப்படி மாறுகிறது மாறுகிறது என சொன்ன விதம் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறது. 

மேலும் மனைவியுடன் சண்டை ஏற்பட்டு கொலை வரை சென்ற பின்பு, தன் நண்பர்கள் இருவரின் குடும்ப பிரச்சினைகளுக்கு பரத் அட்வைஸ் பண்ணுவது நம்மை சுற்றி இருக்கும் “வீட்டில் புலி..வெளியே பசு” கேரக்டர்களை நியாபகப்படுத்துகிறது. தனக்கு பிரச்சினை ஏற்படும்போது பெண்களை குறை கூறுவது, பிரச்சினைக்கு வன்முறை தீர்வு தான் என நினைக்க வைப்பது என காட்சிகளை வைத்து  படம் முழுக்க வைத்துள்ளார்கள். யோசித்து பார்த்தால் இவை எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் “ஈகோ” தான் முழு பிரச்சினையாக வந்து நிற்கும். கதையில் இருக்கும் அழுத்தம் காட்சிகளில் மிஸ்ஸிங். 

ஆனால் முதல் அரைமணி நேரம் ஒரு விறுவிறுப்பை ஏற்படுத்தி, அதனை தொடர்ச்சியாக கொண்டு செல்லாமல் சொதப்பியுள்ளார்கள். இதேபோல் பிற்பாதியில் வாணி போஜன் மீண்டும் வரும்போது கதை சூடுபிடிக்கும் என எதிர்பார்த்தால் கடைசியில் இதுக்கெல்லாம் என்ன காரணம் என எளிதாக எண்ட் கார்டு போடுவது ஏமாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. 

ஆக மொத்தத்தில் படத்தின் பெயர் தான் லவ்.. ஆனால் உள்ளே ரணகளம்...!

Love Movie Review: Overcooked plot, insipid execution brings down a film with promise

At times, the ability to even think of treacherous thoughts can be extremely menacing. Especially, in times of distress and at the height of our rage, thoughts hold the power to fiddle with complex human emotions. The recently released Love , which marks Bharath's 50th film, reflects on these aspects by taking a deep dive into a strained relationship of a married couple, their ego clashes, and, of course, the love that kept them together.

It's love at first meeting for Bharath's Ajay and Vani Bhojan's Divya in Love . Ajay is a struggling entrepreneur. Divya hails from a well-to-do family and looks after her father's (Radha Ravi) business, although disinterestedly. Even though Divya's father expresses his unwillingness in their match, she agrees to go ahead and marry Ajay. There's also a romantic song that moves the story forward. One year after their marriage, Divya gets pregnant. When she tries to contact Ajay, he does not respond. The story shifts to his perspective. Ajay is an alcoholic. The moment Divya enters the house, they indulge in a violent physical fight. The plates, glass jars, photo frames and whatnot, Divya breaks it all. She also pushes him away. When the situation escalates, Ajay rams Divya into the photo frame on the wall, resulting in her instant death. The rest of the story unfolds with Ajay figuring out how to dispose of the body, without raising any suspicions, especially in the minds of his two friends (Vivek and Daniel) who make an unexpected visit to his house. 

Love , the Tamil remake of the Malayalam film of the same name starring Shine Tom Chako and Rajisha Vijayan, has predominantly retained the essence of the story, and even recreated most of the scenes. However, the remake does not offer the impact of the original. The Tamil adaptation chooses to take the expository route by elaborating on some riveting suspense factors. Instead of retaining an open-ending like the Malayalam original, Love goes on to give reasons for the flow of events throughout that takes the zing away. Such creative decisions, presumably to cater to a different set of audiences' sensibilities and tastes, seems forced and pull down the potential of the film from becoming a terrific suspense thriller.

Unlike the original, the Tamil outing takes its time to establish how the relationship between Ajay and Divya blossomed before it became worse. This idea adds more layers to the world building. Bharath delivers a fair performance as a vulnerable and frustrated Ajay, but there is something missing. Vani Bhojan sports a convincing performance as a helpless and agitated Divya. Although there's an argument between the couple before escalating to a physical tiff in the third act that gives an idea as to what might have actually happened, the narrative till then does keep us engaged and agitated in equal amounts. 

The first half of the film revolves only around Ajay panicking and running around the house, checking the dead body inside the bathroom once in a while, and advising his friends--Vivek's character, who wants to die because his wife is cheating on him and Daniel's character, who is cheating his wife and wants to escape from the situation. There is also a set-up of the doorbell ringing, and every time Ajay opens the door, a new character is introduced in the play. This format gets a little repetitive after a point. Even those conversations between Ajay and his friends about relationships, infidelity, and the fragile male ego gets tedious because of the lack of a solid punch. The oscillation between being engaged, and agitated continues through other aspects of the film too. Although we understand Ajay’s presumption of reality and imagination is blurred, the sluggish pacing fails to pull us into his world and empathise with the characters.

To give credit where it is due, a couple of well-executed twists certainly boost this passable film. Cinematographer PG Muthiah's stunning frames, reverberating shots, especially the action sequences, combined with Ronnie Raphael's momentum-amping music, try their best to uplift some underwhelming moments.

Perhaps, Love could have matched up with the impact that the original created, if only it stayed true to the original's narrative, importantly, in the second half and embraced the beauty that lies in self-interpretations and observations instead of overcooking the plot to simplify it for a new audience.

Bharath’s landmark 50th film Love has hit the screens today, and it is an official remake of the Malayalam film of the same name. Director RP Bala, known for his dialogue-writing works, has presented the film as a minimalistic thriller based on the relationship between husband and wife.

Love completely talks about the relationship between the characters of Bharath and Vani Bhojan, and how it turns from sweet to sour over a couple of years. The film starts off by showcasing their relationship in a nice and sweet way, but then showcases how it turns out to be problematic. The first half of the film moves along in a neat manner, and the second half is where all the twists in the film are revealed. Director RP Bala has tried to showcase the incidents that take place between a husband and wife by revealing their problems one by one, but he could have dived deeper into their perspectives to make the film more relatable to audiences. On the other hand, the abundance of turns in the second half makes the film a bit tough to follow.

Bharath delivers a neat performance in the film, and carries off the emotional sequences quite well. Vani Bhojan gives the film a superb performance, and creates good impact in her scenes. The supporting actors in Vivek Prasanna and Daniel Pope have also contributed well.

Technically, Love is quite good including the music and cinematography which is on par with its regard.

On the whole, Love turns out to be an engaging romantic drama which is not easy to get through but still works to its intent.

Verdict: A middling mystery drama led by good performances.

Love (Tamil Movie 2023) Review - A Dud Thriller

Love is an official remake of a Malayalam film (2020) of the same title. It stars Bharath and Vani Bhojan in the lead roles.

Bharath and Vani Bhojan are a married couple. A year later, a heated argument takes place between them in which Vani Bhojan dies as Bharath bangs her head on the wall in an emotional high.

Writing/ Direction:

The opening was very dull with an arranged dating scene which felt very fake. Soon after, the quarrel portion that moves the story forward is a promising one. The one-line is something that could hold the audience if it is developed well. Here, the screenplay happens to be the worst part of the movie. It is unapologetically stretched out, there’s literally no content to improvise. It is probably worthy for a short film length, as the happenings are extremely boring. Till the interval point, the story feels like it hasn’t even moved an inch forward. The situations are poorly written in a way there is absolutely no tension for the viewers thinking about Bharath getting caught for his accidental crime. And there was no empathy for the dead Vani Bhojan at any place. There are only a handful of plot-points and even that are very vaguely conveyed with zero detailing. The climax is decent with interesting twists and changes the entire fate of the script, but it can be consumed well only if the portions before that are engaging. It tries to be Pizza (2012), but nowhere near it.

Performances:

Bharath looks nice and handsome and there is nothing much to complain about his acting, however his dialogue delivery could have been much more dynamic. Same with Vani Bhojan, her performance is convincing but the dialogue modulation is a very big issue. Vivek Prasanna's characterization is very irritating and unfortunately his presence too. No big importance for Radhi Ravi and Daniel Annie Pope who hardly appear for a cameo.

Technicalities:

Songs are just fillers and don't help the story in any manner, but still a decent work by the composer. But he misses out to elevate the serious situations as the soundtrack isn't that powerful. Simple camera work, neat for the parts except for showing the angles of Vani Bhojan's dead body placed in the restroom. The film is filled with nothing but lags in every scene, an already crisp 2-hour movie would have been easily trimmed by half an hour.

With an interesting screenplay, the twists would have been effective and in fact the whole movie would have become a worthy outing. Good opportunity has been completely ruined.

லவ் டுடே: திரை விமர்சனம்

ஐ.டி நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்றும் உத்தமன் பிரதீப்பும் (பிரதீப் ரங்கநாதன்), நிகிதாவும் (இவனா) காதலிக்கிறார்கள். ‘உன்னை எனக்கு நல்லாத் தெரியும்’ என்று நம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள், இருவரும். காதல் விவகாரம் நிகிதாவின் அப்பா வேணு சாஸ்திரிக்கு (சத்யராஜ்) தெரியவர, அவர் உத்தமனை அழைத்துப் பேசுகிறார். இருவரும் தங்கள் ஃபோனை ஒரே ஒரு நாள் மாற்றிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும், பிறகு சுமூகமாக எல்லாம் சென்றால் திருமணம் என நிபந்தனை விதிக்கிறார். அதன்படி மாற்றிக்கொள்கிறார்கள். இருவர் ஃபோனுக்குள்ளும் இருந்து பூதமாகக் கிளம்புகிறது, அவரவர் ரகசியங்கள். அது பெரும் மோதலாகிவிட, இறுதியில் ஒன்று சேர்ந்தார்களா, இல்லையா என்பதுதான் படம்.

அத்தியாவசியமாகிவிட்ட செல்ஃபோன்தான் பல அனாவசியங்களையும் அள்ளி வைத்திருக்கிறது என்பதையும் அதனால் ஏற்படும் அக்கப்போர்கள், வாழ்க்கையில் உண்டாக்கும் அராஜகங்களையும் ஆர்ப்பாட்டமில்லாத காட்சிகளின் மூலம் ரசனையாகச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார், இயக்குநர் பிரதீப் ரங்கநாதன். ‘மாடர்ன் டே’ காதலையும் நம்பிக்கையற்றுத் தடுமாறும் சந்தேகத்தையும் ஆழமாகவே பேசியிருக்கிறது, படம். அதற்குச் சுவாரசியமான, தெளிவான திரைக்கதையும் கதாபாத்திரத் தேர்வும் பலமாக உதவி இருக்கின்றன.

செல்ஃபோன்தான் ‘கான்செப்ட்’ என்பதால், அதன் உருவாக்கத்தில் தொடங்கும் ‘டைட்டில் கார்ட்’, மண்ணுக்குள் பூத்து வைக்கும் மாங்கொட்டை ‘இன்னும் வளரலையே’ என்று அடிக்கடிதோண்டி பார்க்கும் சிறுவன், அவனைப் போலவே வளர்ந்து கிளைமாக்ஸில் மரமாகி நின்று நம்பிக்கையைச் சொல்லும் விஷயத்தில், தன்னைத் தேர்ந்த இயக்குநராகவும் நிரூபித்திருக்கிறார், பிரதீப்.

‘கோமாளி’ மூலம் இயக்குநரான அவர், இதில் நாயகனாகவும் தன்னை வளர்த்திருக்கிறார். சில இடங்களில் தனுஷ் சாயல் தெரிந்தாலும், ‘இவர் வேற மாதிரி’ என புரிய வைத்து விடுகிறார் பல காட்சிகளில். காதலியின் தந்தை முன் பவ்யமாக அமர்ந்து பேசும்போது தெரிகிற கூச்சமும் தவிப்பும் பிறகு அதே காட்சி அவர் வீட்டில் ‘ரிபீட்’ ஆகும் போது வெளிக்காட்டும் தெனாவட்டும் மொத்தக் கவலையையும் அம்மாவிடம் கொட்டிக் கதறும்போதும் ஒரு நம்பிக்கை நட்சத்திரம் என்பதை எளிதாக உணர்த்துகிறது அவர் நடிப்பு.

காதலி என்பதைத் தாண்டி, இன்றைய இளம் பெண்களின் பிரதிபலிப்பாக இவானா, கவனிக்க வைக்கிறார். காதலன் பற்றிய ரகசியங்கள் அறிந்து, எரிந்து விழும்போது அவர் நடிப்பில் அத்தனை யதார்த்தம்.

யோகிபாபுவை சரியான ‘மீட்டரில்’ பயன்படுத்தி இருப்பதும், திருமணம் நிச்சயிக்கப்பட்ட ரவீனாவுக்கும் அவருக்குமானப் புரிதல் காட்சிகளும் தெளிவாக எழுதப்பட்ட திரைக்கதையின் தீராத பலம். வாட்ஸ் அப் குரூப்புக்கு ‘கிளி வெர்சஸ் கிங்காங்’ என டைட்டில் வைத்து உருவக் கேலி செய்யும் மனநிலைக்கு அவர் காட்டும் ரியாக்‌ஷனும் விளக்கமும் சென்டிமென்டாகவும் அமைந்துவிடுகிறது.

நாயகியின் கட்டுப்பாடான ‘ஆர்தோடக்ஸ்’ அப்பா சத்யராஜ், ‘எப்ப பாரு செல்போனு’ என்று செல்ல எரிச்சல் காட்டும் அம்மா ராதிகா உட்பட அனைவரும் பாத்திரம் உணர்ந்து நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

காட்சிகளோடு ஒன்றிவிடச் செய்யும் யுவன் சங்கர் ராஜாவின் பின்னணி இசையும், கிளைமாக்ஸில் சித் ஸ்ரீராம் குரலில் வரும், ‘என்னை விட்டு உயிர் போனாலும்’ பாடலும் படத்துக்கு மேலும் உயிர் கொடுக்கின்றன. தினேஷ் புருஷோத்தமனின் நேர்த்தியான ஒளிப்பதிவு, காட்சிகளை நின்று கவனிக்க வைக்கின்றன.

காமெடி என்ற பெயரில் வரும் சில ஆபாச வசனங்கள் மற்றும் ‘கிளிஷே’ காட்சிகளைத் தவிர்த்திருந்தாலும் ரசிக்கும் படமாகவே இருந்திருக்கும். மேக்கிங்கில் இன்னும் கவனம் செலுத்தி இருக்கலாம். ஆனாலும் 2கே கிட்ஸ், தியேட்டரில் காண்பிக்கும் திருவிழா ‘மூடில்’ குறைகள் கரைந்து போகின்றன.

11. Andhaghaaram (2020)

Translated as “Darkness,” ‘Andhaghaaram’ is a Tamil language supernatural movie that follows three seemingly unrelated individuals in Chennai. The first, Dr. Indran, is a doctor who was shot by a violent patient. Although the doctor survives, the patient massacres his whole family, leading to his license getting suspended. The second, Selvam, is a blind, honest man who lives with a severe kidney problem. However, being versed in the occult, he tries to get paid by capturing spirits in a seemingly haunted house. Finally, the third, Vinod, is a cricket coach who feels that he is to blame for gifting his friend, Pradeep, with a book on the occult, which appears to have given the latter some mental instability. As the movie progresses, it reveals how these three men live in different timelines and how the supernatural, or rather the spirit world, connects them. The rest of the movie is a thrilling watch as it reveals the current timeline and shows how the spirit world tries to use the living to wreak havoc on past wrongdoers. 10. Spyder (2017)

‘Spyder’ is another AR Murugadoss directorial that is made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Both versions have the Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu in the lead role. ‘Spyder’ also has the surprise characterization of director SJ Surya as Heath Ledger’s Joker-like psychopathic villain, Sudalai. Mahesh Babu plays a cunning intelligence officer who comes in between the deadly scheme of the villain. He has to save the city and its innocent inhabitants from imminent danger before the psychotic serial killer, Sudalai, unleashes horror. Sudalai loves to hear people’s screams of pain and suffering and plots a deadly scheme to stage his death opera. 9. Irugapatru (2023)

Directed by Yuvaraj Dhayalan, ‘Irugapatru’ stars Saniya Iyappan, Abarnathi, Shraddha Srinath and Vikram Prabhu. It follows Mithra, a marriage counselor whose tips and tricks for maintaining a good marriage start taking a toll on her own married life. Side by side, we also get to see two other married couples undergoing relationship issues. Amid understanding and misunderstanding, we are provided with a big picture of what it means to be in a relationship wherein both parties are bound by the solemn oath. You can watch the film here .

8. Love Today (2022)

From director Pradeep Ranganathan comes a rom-com starring Ivana, Pradeep Ranganathan, Akshaya Udayakumar, Yogi Babu, and Sathyaraj. The story shows what happens when Nikitha’s father tells her and her boyfriend Uthaman to swap their phones for a day, after which, if they want to get married, they can. Uthaman’s parents are out of the picture here. While both Uthaman and Nikitha are hesitant at first, they swap and eventually unlock each other phones. And that’s when complications, complaints, and confusion creep in. While for us viewers, it is fun, the film makes it clear that it takes one to understand one who is in such a situation. It’s not about cheating but about hiding and/or not telling stuff to the person who you have decided to spend your whole life with. 7. Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal (2020)

The story of two friends who con people by posing as app developers and their misadventures as they find love makes the film a fun watch. All four actors in the movie have been given enough space, which makes the film even more special. ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ was shot in Delhi, Goa, and Chennai by the much-appreciated debutante director Desingh Periyasamy. The entertainer does not come across as preachy, nor does it hold guilt over any of the characters for what they have done. However, it does leave us with some “life lessons” through this funny yet filled-with-twists story. You may watch the film here .

6. Anjaan (2014)

Set in the narrow alleys of the Mumbai underworld, ‘Anjaan’ follows a disabled man named Krishna who travels to the metropolis in search of his brother, Raju Bhai. The brother goes missing under mysterious circumstances, and Krishna learns that Raju Bhai is a daredevil gangster. To make circumstances more chaotic, there are people still roaming around to kill Raju Bhai. Now, Krishna has to find the dubious connection between the disappearance of his brother and the dreaded don Imran Bhai and also save himself from the machetes and guns mistaking him as his criminal brother. 5. Jagame Thandiram (2021)

‘Jagame Thandiram,’ translated to “The Universe is a ruse,” revolves around Suruli, a gangster from Madurai, who owns a restaurant. Although Suruli wants to tie the knot as soon as possible, he falls victim to fate as his bride learns of his criminal background and runs away. Alone, Suruli turns to crime and subsequently comes under the notice of John, who takes him to London to join Peter Sprott’s gang. Once in London, Suruli helps Peter kill a rival leader, gaining his boss’s support and trust. Gradually, the gangster from Madurai begins to thrive and even falls in love with a Sri Lankan Tamil girl, Attila. However, when Attila tries to nurse him back to health after a violent altercation, Suruli catches her trying to poison him to death. The reasoning behind Attila’s actions then makes up the rest of the film as the chain of events threatens to rock the underbellies of both Sri Lanka and London. You can check out the film here .

4. Roja (1992)

A cult classic, with an important role played by its songs and score as composed by A. R. Rahman, ‘Roja’ is a romantic thriller directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam. It shows the desperate attempts of a woman (Madhoo) from Tamil Nadu to get the Indian government to rescue her husband (Arvind Swami), a RAW agent, who is kidnapped by Pakistani terrorists. Stellar performances, exemplary direction, and a praiseworthy story make ‘Roja’ one of the best Tamil films of all time. You can watch it here .

3. Super Deluxe (2019)

This unusual and unique film by Thiagarajan Kumararaja weaves four stories together. This film by Kumararaja was made eight years after his previous work and has been received very well by critics and viewers alike. The four stories see their characters going through the ups and downs of life while reflecting on faith, love, acceptance, and personal values. The fact that the film does not push any judgments on the characters is widely appreciated, in addition to the solid performances by the actors. This is the director’s second work, and it has already created waves in the Tamil film industry. Technically, the film is very sound, and the cinematographers P.S. 2. Sila Samayangalil (2016)

Also known as ‘Sometimes,’ this film narrates an unusual story of seven strangers who go to a clinic to get tested for AIDS and their anxiety as they learn that one of them is infected. It is human nature to be curious and to imagine possibilities or an alternative reality. As each of the characters reveals their story through conversations varying in-depth, we start to empathize with the characters and what they are going through. The film also highlights the stigma that surrounds AIDS and how it affects people, whether they have it or not. This is shown tactfully as the characters do not have inhibitions judging one another, although they are all standing in the same spot. The entire film is set in the waiting lounge of a clinic; therefore, the portrayal of the characters and the strength of storytelling carry the movie on its shoulders. 1. Jigarthanda Double X (2023)

One of the latest Tamil additions to Netflix, ‘Jigarthanda Double X,’ is directed by Karthik Subbaraj and stars Raghava Lawrence, SJ Surya, Nimisha Sajayan, and Shine Tom Chacko. The story is set in the 1970s and follows two characters: Alliyus Caesar, who is a gangster, and Kirubakar, who is a police sub-inspector tasked with apprehending Caesar. So when he comes to know that Caesar is looking for a director who shall direct a film with him as the lead, Kirubakar assumes the role of Ray Dasan, an assistant director of world-famous Indian director Satyajit Ray, and makes it through the audition. Whether Kirubakar is able to bring Caesar to justice while trying to make a film with him is what we see in this utterly entertaining movie with compelling performances by all actors. The film Uru stars popular actor Dhansika, Mime Gopi and Jayabalan in leading roles. The film revolves around the life of a writer whose writing style becomes outdated due to the changing trends. To coup up with the current trend, he decides to travel to a village named Megamalai to find peace and write a new book. As he arrives in the village, he meets with several unfortunate and horrifying incidents. As the story goes on the writer finds himself entangled in the web of his creations. As he tries to write a trending story leads him to multiple unforeseen and fearful events.

As the film continues the fictional killer from the story of the writer starts murdering people in real life spreading fear among the people of the valley. Then, the writer and his wife become the target of the psycho-killer. The film mainly revolves around the writer’s battle against the killer.

The film, released in 2017, is directed by Vicky Anand and produced by V.P. Viji. Kalaiyarasan was also seen acting. The music of the film is composed by Johan Shevanesh while the music is produced by Anik Sharma. The story of the film is penned by Director Vicky Anand and Vijay Prakash. Despite its thrilling storyline, the movie was rated 5.8 by IMDB. The film is available on the popular OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.
