Introduction

There are many benefits associated with high-school sports. This essay will discuss these benefits.

Almost every parent will want to see his or her child participate in at least a sport, to ensure that this happens, they start encouraging them to play early on in life.

This is where kids start participating in sports at young ages. This means that, by the time kids are of the age of going to school going, they will have already known and decided on which game to play. When kids join their school mates in teams, team spirit is fostered in them, and they grow with it into their adulthood. Team sports teach athletes to focus on the same goal, which is winning.

This virtue is fostered from a very tender age by their parents, teachers and their coaches. This helps athletes to grow with creative, social and physical skills that help them in their adult lives. Sports also teach athletes to be good sports persons who appreciate winning and losing as part of the game.

People face competition in many spheres of life, in academics, sports, and when applying for jobs in their adulthood. Early participation in competitive sports is a good opportunity, for kids, to understand that it is good to compete in a healthy environment (High school sports 1).

Sports also help in the physical well-being of the athlete. It is known that those who actively participate in sports are physically healthy than those who do not participate actively in sports. Sports also help in socialization. Having a chance to spend time outside school with friends helps students to gain life skills through social interaction.

The support and care that youth receives from the patrons or team coaches help them in emotional growth. This also goes a long way in improving their self esteem and preventing anxiety that can sometimes cause unnecessary stress.

Sports also prevent many school going kids from engaging in deviant behaviors. Sports provide students with something to focus on and, therefore, avoid the streets and gangs. This helps not just the child but the family from which he or she comes.

The family will be relieved from solving cases that relate to deviance because their child is participating in sports. Communities come together during sports occasions to watch games. High-school sports also offer the athletes, their families, and the whole community, an opportunity to come together and interact during sports events.

The community also comes together in support of their sports teams. Members of the community get a chance to sale foodstuffs, wash cars, and other events through which they generate money that they use to support their teams. Family members come to support and get involved in the lives of their children by supporting them in whatever sport they choose (Payne & Fogarty 1).

When a child discovers that he is getting support from the family and the community, the child will work harder to be the best he can be. This is a very important lesson in a child’s life because the child grows with it throughout the entire life. On some occasions, the community can travel with their team during away games just to support and cheer on their team. The kids, therefore, grow up with a sense of belonging and strive to be responsible members of their community (Payne & Fogarty 1).

Sports help children to grow physically, emotionally, and socially and live fruitful lives in their community.

Implementing the K-12 program is part of an active effort by stakeholders in Philippine education to solve the shortcomings in the educational system. This new educational framework seeks to deliver a more thorough and well-rounded educational experience for the students. However, this system's implementation and the addition of extracurricular activities like athletics provide several difficulties for students. This study compared the academic performance of athletes and non-athletes in Grade 12 Senior High School students ( N =60) using their midterm scores and a self-report survey questionnaire after the K-12 implementation. Data from the students' midterm scores and a self-report survey questionnaire administered after implementing the K-12 program were analyzed using a t-test. The results showed no significant difference in the midterm scores between non-athletes (78.13 ± 13.71) and athletes (73.7 ± 9.13), with a p-value of 0.146. The results of the survey questionnaire showed that only two (2) questions out of fifteen (15) (Do you skip classes? and Do you have enough allowance?) had a significant difference (p>0.05). The results of the current study demonstrated that student-athletes perform academically on par with non-athletes and can function both inside and outside the classroom. They could maintain attendance despite needing more time for training and getting used to the K–12 system. This study generally demonstrated that with the establishment of K–12, Grade 12 Senior High School pupils' engagement in athletics had little bearing on their academic achievement. The study's findings are crucial for promoting and supporting student participation in sports activities across all education stakeholders.

Announcer fired after hot mic picks up vulgar comments toward women at soccer game

by KAKE/CNN/CNN Newsource

(KAKE/ROSE HILL HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER TEAM/CNN/CNN)

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE/CNN/CNN Newsource/WKRC) - An announcer was fired after a hot mic picked up vulgar comments toward women at a girls soccer game.

A high school sports announcer was banned from broadcasting in Kansas postseason games after he was caught on an open mic making crude remarks during the girls state soccer tournament in Wichita, Kansas.

"I mean, it's just such a disrespect to these girls," mother Kara Hackney told KAKE.

Hackney's daughter plays for the Rose Hill High School soccer team. After putting their all into the season, Hackney said the team made state for the first time in 13 years.

"As a Rose Hill community, we're so proud of the girls and how far they came this year. And so I think it just kind of leaves a little bit of a sour taste," Hackney told KAKE's reporters.

On the National Federation of State High School Association's (NFHS) online broadcast, announcer Toby Moore didn't know his mic was hot and started making vulgar comments about the teams.

"From the video that I watched, he didn't particularly say either McPherson or Rose Hill, but in general, that he thought that the play wasn't good. And I just thought it was really disrespectful. These girls have worked really hard," Hackney told the outlet.

In the audio, Moore can be heard saying the following:

My mind kind of flipped the 'kill me now switch' at about 30 minutes in if they're just gonna keep kicking the damn ball out of bounds and missing passes all day I might as well just go home.

Later, another individual sitting next to Moore can be heard talking about "soccer mom's" being the benefit of covering high school girls' games.

"F- yeah. Up top baby," Moore can be heard saying. "The one that's facing us? See if she can tear it the f- off."

The second person then commented on another individual's "curves."

"I can't see the legs, but I can feel the a** hit from here," Moore can be heard commenting.

Hackney said it was what Moore said next that bothered her the most.

"The fact that they said and quoted that if somebody heard this, they would get in trouble. And let's pretend this conversation didn't happen, just shows that they knew what they were saying was inappropriate, they just got caught," Hackney told KAKE.

In a statement to awfulannouncing.com, Moore apologized, adding that his comments were tasteless, stupid and inexcusable.

The NFHS apologized for the comments, saying in part that they do not reflect its values or standards and that it "terminated its relationship" with Moore.

The Kansas State High Schools Activities Association also issued an apology, saying it won't tolerate degrading comments and is working with the NFHS to ensure Moore won't work any postseason games in Kansas again.

"I just hope that our girls don't listen to, you know, people that are trying to put them down, and just take pride in all their work," Hackney told KAKE's reporters.

Sitka and Eagle River open Division I state baseball tournament with commanding victories

high school sports thesis statement

Two years ago, Sitka made a surprising run to the program’s first state finals appearance since 2017 before coming up short to perennial powerhouse South Anchorage.

On Thursday afternoon, after blowing out West Valley 11-1 in six innings to open the 2024 ASAA Division I state tournament at Mulcahy Stadium, the Wolves believe that won’t be the case this time around.

“We came out, our pitcher threw great, we got behind a little bit on a couple batters but we got them back with strikes and turned three big double plays, which helped a lot,” head coach Ken Carley said.

The Wolves didn’t waste any time scoring, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Carley said the runs were “huge” in building momentum as well as establishing an early lead.

“I’d love to start every game that way, but it just doesn’t happen,” Carley said. “It was nice getting a good lead and getting a good pitcher out there for us.”

One of their hottest bats on the day was junior outfielder and pitcher Bryce Compagno-Calhoun, who recorded three of Sitka’s nine hits, scored three runs and was responsible for a two-run RBI single to earn Player of the Game honors.

“It feels great,” he said. “We all had a lot of energy and we were just hitting the ball. Going in, we wanted to be aggressive and just hit the ball and have fun, and it worked out.”

Compagno-Calhoun is one of just five holdovers from that state runner-up team. He was a freshman at the time and believes this year’s squad has what it takes to go far.

“We’ve got a really good group,” he said. “We’re a lot more skilled and want to keep going with a lot of energy moving forward.”

The Wolves’ explosive opening inning was threatening to be their only multi-run frame of the game until they blew it open for good in the bottom of the sixth with six runs after capitalizing on some control struggles by the Wolfpack’s pitcher.

“I had our guys be selective because I knew what was going on and they were only swinging at strikes and it came down to either a walk or a hit there,” Carley said.

Eagle River continues to look like top contender with opening-round shutout

Sitka wasn’t the only team with a Wolf mascot that set a strong tone and sent a clear message about its legitimacy as a title contender Thursday afternoon.

Eagle River was even more dominant in its quarterfinal victory, which came via a 14-0 shutout of Juneau-Douglas in just five innings in the second game of the day.

“I just think our guys were ready to play today, and we had an opportunity to jump on them a little bit at the beginning of the game,” Eagle River head coach Bill Lierman said. “At the end of the day, we hit the ball well and found some holes.”

The Wolves were red-hot at the plate and capitalized on the Crimson Bears’ errors, recording multiple runs in all but one inning. That included putting up four in the second, three in the fourth and five in the fifth.

“I think our guys stayed back on the ball and put some good swings on it,” Lierman said.

According to Lierman, the Wolves have put together a solid offensive stretch that goes back to mid-May.

“This is a continuation of how we played in the (Cook Inlet Conference) tournament when we played three really good games,” he said. “That puts four in a row and hopefully that will carry over into the next game.”

Boyertown Area School District cancels last 2 days of classes due to network server issues

WPVI logo

PENNSYLVANIA (WPVI) -- A school district in Berks and Montgomery counties announced that its last two days of school will be canceled this week.

Officials with the Boyertown Area School District say due to a network server issue impacting the heating and cooling systems, as well as the phone and intercom systems, the district will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Those last two days bring the school year to an end.

"This action is not taken lightly and is done out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our students and staff," the district's statement wrote in part.

All district buildings will be closed on both days, the statement added.

To help resolve the server issues, district officials are asking all students to log out of any district devices they have at home and perform a hard shutdown on the device.

Devices are asked to be kept off and unused until further notice.

Graduation is set to be held as planned, on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Santander Arena. Students and families attending should follow the schedules provided by Boyertown Area Senior High (BASH), officials say.

The Graduation Walks planned for Thursday morning at the elementary and middle school buildings are canceled, however.

World Language finals and eighth-grade project presentations have also been canceled, officials say.

Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) students are set to be transported to and from BASH at their normal times, according to the district, but they will need to provide their own transportation to BASH.

Report cards for all grades will also be delayed until further notice.

Lastly, the district stated that it will make arrangements for students to collect any remaining items from the schools in the coming days. Residents are asked not to visit the buildings until they've been notified of district plans.

"This is not the way any of us planned to end the school year, and we offer our sincerest apologies for the last-minute changes," the statement said in part. "We look forward to celebrating the Class of 2024 as planned, and we wish all of you the best of summers!"
