By  resolution 836(IX)  of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the UN Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. The Assembly suggested to governments that the Day be observed on the date and in the way that each considers appropriate.

The date 20 November marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the  Declaration of the Rights of the Child , in 1959, and the  Convention on the Rights of the Child , in 1989.

The Convention, which is the most widely ratified international human rights treaty, sets out a number of children’s rights including the right to life, to health, to education and to play, as well as the right to family life, to be protected from violence, to not be discriminated, and to have their views heard. 

On the basis of the Convention and joint efforts by all the countries and regions, let us promote and celebrate children’s right on the World Children's Day, and continuously build up a friendly environment for children in the world through dialogue and actions.

Children's day is celebrated all across the world to honour children who make this world a better place to live in. International Children’s Day was first started in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare in the year 1952. Since then, most countries celebrate it on June 1. The United Nations, however, observes International Children’s Day on November 20. Different countries have different designated days to be celebrated as Children's Day. In India, Children’s day is observed on the 14th of November every year.

Children's day is celebrated in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of our ex-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru who was known for his immense love and affection towards children. According to him, children are not only the epitome of innocence and purity but also the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow. So, they should be raised with care and a lot of love. It’s them who strengthen the social foundation of the country. 

Therefore, the main purpose behind the children’s day celebration is to spread awareness about child care, child rights and child education in the country. , pandit jawaharlal nehru was the first prime minister of independent india. he was born on the 14th of november 1889. he dedicated his life to secure the future of india as a new nation. he was well known for his principles of peace and prosperity he stuck to all his life. the whole country looked up to him for his political vision and his dedication to the country. one aspect of his personality that people still remember today is the love he had for children. , pandit nehru worked hard to ensure that the youngsters of india had plenty of educational opportunities. for this, he established a number of educational institutes like the indian institute of technology (iit), all india institute of medical services (aiims) and indian institute of management (iim). apart from these, he also ensured that children could avail free primary education. he took a special interest in the well being and health of children and in order to prevent children from the suffering of malnutrition and hunger he made provisions for schools to provide milk and free meals to children., history of the day.

It is a little known fact that the first Children’s day in India was celebrated on the 20th of November. This was done following the announcement of the United Nations'  to celebrate Children's day on the said date. However, after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, the date for the celebration of Children's day was shifted to 14th November to honour his love and dedication to children.

In India, children's day is celebrated through a number of cultural programmes and fun activities organised by schools and NGOs as well as private bodies. Students are often allowed to wear colourful dresses in their institutes and are sometimes, also gifted with sweets and goodies.

Several NGOs take this day as the opportunity to extend a helping hand to the underprivileged children. They also organize several programs for underprivileged children. Also, they organize cultural events for the orphanages where the children participate in events like quiz, dance, music, sports, etc. Even prizes, awards are distributed to the children. Various awareness sessions are conducted to make the children aware of various schemes implemented or announced by the government for their education, health, and welfare.

Even on television, some special programs are telecasted on the day of Children’s day. Several newspapers also bring out special articles on this day, which demonstrates the immense talent of the children in various corner of the country.

As Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru said, “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country.” Children’s day is a beautiful occasion to remember and celebrate the famous thoughts of Chacha Nehru. Italian Actor Roberto Benigni to Join Pope Francis for World Children’s Day

The Vatican is expecting children from more than 100 countries to travel to Rome for the weekend event with the Pope.

Pope Francis will be joined by Italian actor Roberto Benigni and soccer star Gianluigi Buffon as the pontiff celebrates World Children’s Day over the last weekend in May.

The Vatican announced on Thursday that World Children’s Day will “kick off” on Saturday, May 25, at 3:30 p.m. with a soccer match between kids and professional soccer players in Rome’s Olympic Stadium led by Buffon, the goalie who helped Italy achieve victory in the 2006 World Cup.

On the second day of the event, Benigni, best known for his Oscar-winning film “Life Is Beautiful,” will give a short speech at the end of Pope Francis’ Mass and Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, May 26. 

World Children’s Day is a new initiative by Pope Francis sponsored by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education in collaboration with the Catholic community of Sant’Egidio , the Auxilium Cooperative , and the Italian Football Federation. 

When Pope Francis first announced the establishment of World Children’s Day in December 2023, he said: “Like Jesus, we want to put children at the center and care for them.”

According to Vatican News, Pope Francis was inspired to create World Children’s Day by a 9-year-old boy named Alessandro who proposed the idea to the pope to have an international event like World Youth Day (an international gathering for young people ages 16 to 35) for younger children.

The two-day event will culminate with Mass for the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity with the pope in St. Peter’s Square at 10:30 a.m. on May 26.

Franciscan Father Enzo Fortunato is organizing World Children’s Day for the Vatican. He said the goal is to “look at the world through the eyes of children, who are the hope of the people, their future.”

“I publicly thank Roberto Benigni and all those who have decided to work and donate their time and talent to children all over the world,” he added.

To the moms all alone on Mother's Day, I see you and you are enough.

Most of my 14 years of motherhood felt like Mother’s Day was spent alone, including some of the years I was married.

Every May, when the second Sunday in May comes around, I think of the women who are where I was in multiple places of my mother journey: scared, alone and envious of the moms with a supportive partner at home.

This year, I've written a letter to every single mother struggling to celebrate herself today, who feels inferior to the other families she sees.

When the flowers don't come, when there are no "thank yous," when there is no one posting our picture, I want us to remember where our gift truly lies.

To our kids, this is the life and this love is enough. So, we can raise our glass.

Dear, single mom on Mother's Day

Maybe you woke up a little early today to give yourself the gift of solitude. There is no one to tag in at the end of the day. It’s exhausting.

You might get a few minutes before feelings of inadequacy come flooding in. You are reminded of all the things you can't do, never seeing all that you have. You wonder how a single-parent home is affecting your kids, who will be down in a matter of moments.

Then, the day will begin just like any other day.

Maybe there were once flowers waiting for you. Maybe there were never flowers at all. You may find crumpled up Mother's Day art in your kids' backpack today, but they may not recognize that there should be anything to celebrate.

You will prepare every meal, answer every request, create every moment, wipe every tear and calm every fear. But your requests will be left unmet, your moments 60 seconds at a time, your tears wiped by your own hand and your fears, ever ponding.

Yet every day you show up and you do it, maybe with a little envy for the two-parent home down the street, because it's hard to be a full-time parent and a full-time provider. You can't possibly do either perfectly well.

If you're feeling discouraged today, seeing only your lack, look inside.

You are the creator of all the good that you see.

Tonight, when you tuck in your kids, witness your gifts.

There may have not been anything on the table this morning, you may have cleaned up the house and cooked every meal, but there is peace in the room. There is joy on their faces. There is a tangible love providing security like the blanket wrapped around their feet.

Your family is not inferior.

You are enough. Your kids know it, and some day someone else will too.

But it has to start with you.

Single mothers should know that married mothers aren't necessarily better supported. Sure, they may have flowers, but just like you, they have learned how to water themselves.

There were Mother's Days when all I felt was hollow. There were flowers, photos, dinners and lots of hugs, but it obscured a darker reality. Presence doesn't equal support. Lonely doesn't equal alone.

Knowing my "enoughness" led me back into singleness and back to the mother I've always been. So, cherish where you are and never trade your peace for support. Recognize yourself and celebrate this day.

Last year, I bought myself a bouquet of wildflowers, and this year, I bought myself a few.

My gift is this home I've created and the peace I feel at night. Sure, it may be a little messy, but it is far from inferior.

When I release my kids into the world, they will take this love that they've been given and begin planting it in places of their own, definitely better than if they had grown up in our broken two-parent home.

Yet I know that you, like me, may have a desire to share your life with someone. Just make sure that they are a seer too, a seer of your worth and your "enoughness," on more than just this special day.

A new $37 million day care facility could be coming to Fort Worth’s Medical District. 

Cook Children’s recently submitted preliminary site maps to Fort Worth’s planning staff for a new 3.6-acre day care center at 1701 Pennsylvania Ave. City officials are reviewing the early plans.

The proposed 70,000-to-95,000-square-foot facility would be about a block away from Cook Children’s Medical Center on Cooper Street and Seventh Avenue. 

“Cook Children’s is currently in preliminary discussions regarding the potential relocation of Kids’ Place, the on-site daycare shared with Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth,” a spokesperson with Cook Children’s said in a statement. “As long-term campus plans are explored, details regarding the relocation remain undecided.”

Cook Children’s acquired the Pennsylvania Avenue property in February 2016. The lot is currently appraised at $148,750, according to the Tarrant Appraisal District.

Cook Children’s focuses on access to pediatric care for children across Tarrant County. The medical center in Fort Worth is the 10th largest children’s hospital in the U.S. by bed size, with 443 beds. In 2022, the health system reported $1.77 billion in revenue. 

Construction is currently underway on Cook Children’s Las Vegas Trail Neighborhood Health Center , which is being built in partnership with JPS, as well as a new neighborhood center in northeast Fort Worth.

7 Mother’s Day Traditions Around the World

Millions of American families honor their mothers every year with cards, flowers, special meals and other gifts on the second Sunday in May thanks to the work of Anna Jarvis, the founder of this country’s Mother’s Day . A single woman without children, Jarvis relentlessly lobbied for the holiday in honor of her own mother’s death, which took place on the second Sunday of May 1905. By 1914, the celebration had become so popular that it was declared a national holiday (Jarvis later regretted lobbying for the official holiday after it became commercialized .)

Today almost every country in the world observes a version of Mother’s Day to thank mothers for the critical role they play in the family.

“Despite the many cultural differences that exist and differing expectations of motherhood throughout history and the world, one thing remains constant: a recognition that mothers have a uniquely important, valuable role in helping children to thrive,” says Christine Gross-Loh, author of Parenting Without Borders: Surprising Lessons Parents Around the World Can Teach Us.

While many countries celebrate on the same day as the United States and with similar traditions, others observe different dates and follow their own unique customs. Here’s a look at how seven other countries celebrate Mother’s Day around the world.

1. United Kingdom

Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, a date that varies each year. The celebration originated in the Middle Ages as a religious holiday known as Mothering Sunday , when people in domestic service were allowed to return to their home, or mother, church and often visited family.

Influenced by the modern American celebration, Mothering Sunday became largely secular by the 1950s, though it retained the traditional date in Lent. Today the holiday is known in the United Kingdom both as Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday and is celebrated much as it is in the United States. One traditional Mothering Sunday food is the Simnel cake , a light fruitcake made with marzipan, which is also popular at Easter.

Mexico has celebrated Mother’s Day since 1922 , when it was established as part of an effort to promote motherhood as the roles of women expanded outside the home. Rafael Alducin, founder of the Mexico City newspaper El Excelsior , organized the first celebration on May 10, 1922 .

Today, in addition to giving mothers flowers, cards, and other gifts, families enjoy traditional Mexican foods and music. The celebration also frequently includes serenading mothers in the morning, some families even hire mariachis to accompany them, and continues with special masses and school performances.

Mother’s Day in Japan was originally held on March 6, 1931 , to celebrate the birthday of Empress Kojun, the mother of Emperor Emeritus Akihito, but it was banned as a Western influence during World War II . In 1949, Japan began celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. Today it is marked by families giving their mothers gifts, cards, and flowers, usually red carnations, which symbolize a mother’s love and sacrifices, and enjoying traditional Japanese egg dishes.

4. Ethiopia

Mother’s Day in Ethiopia takes place during Antrosht , a three-day celebration held whenever the rainy season ends, sometime between October and November. Families come together with traditional singing, dancing, and a feast that includes a hash made by the mother. The ingredients for the hash are brought by the children with boys bringing lamb or bull meat and the girls bringing vegetables, spices, and dairy.

While Peru marks Mother’s Day on the same date as the United States and with many of the same customs, including giving flowers and sharing meals, many Peruvians also honor their deceased female relatives . They gather at their graves to celebrate them, often bringing flowers and sharing food and drinks. The tradition is so popular that vendors sell flowers, balloons, and signs outside the cemeteries.

6. Thailand

When Thailand first celebrated Mother’s Day in 1950, it took place on April 15, close to Songkran , the Thai new year, but it was moved to August 12 in 1976 to honor the birthday of Queen Sirikit , who is considered the mother of the nation. Children give their mothers garlands of jasmine, which symbolizes purity and love, while families often give alms to Buddhist monks and make charitable donations. Schools host performances for mothers, while candle-lighting ceremonies, parades, and fireworks honor the Queen.

The French honor their mothers nationally on the last Sunday in May, unless it falls on the same day as the Christian holiday of Pentecost, in which case it moves to the first Sunday in June. Although the day originated as a way to honor mothers of large families and has been celebrated nationally since the 1920s, it was not until 1950 that the government gave it a fixed date . Like many other countries, French families give mothers gifts, cards, and flowers, though in France, Lily of the Valley is preferred. Special meals are followed by children reciting poems and giving cakes shaped like floral bouquets or hearts.

Want to protect your kids' eyes from myopia get them to play outside.

Research shows kids who spend two hours a day outside are less likely to develop myopia.

If you're a parent struggling to get your kids' off their devices and outdoors to play, here's another reason to keep trying: Spending at least two hours outside each day is one of the most important things your kids can do to protect their eyesight.

" We think that outdoor time is the best form of prevention for nearsightedness," says Dr. Noha Ekdawi , a pediatric ophthalmologist in Wheaton, Ill.

And that's important, because the number of kids with nearsightedness – or myopia – has been growing rapidly in the U.S., and in many other parts of the world.

In the U.S., 42% of people are now myopic – up from 25% back in the 1970s. In some East Asian countries, as many as 90% of people are myopic by the time they're young adults.

It's a trend Ekdawi has seen among her own young patients. When she started practicing 15 years ago, one or two of the children she saw had myopia. But these days, "about 50% of my patients have myopia, which is an incredibly high number." Ekdawi calls the increase astronomical.

Myopia occurs when the eyeball stretches and grows too long, which makes far away objects look blurry.

Once a kid gets myopia, their eyeball will keep stretching and the condition will get progressively worse. If they develop high myopia , it can increase the risk of serious eye problems down the road, such as retinal detachments, glaucoma and cataracts. It can even lead to blindness.

There are treatments available to help slow the progression of myopia, including prescription atropine eye drops, special soft disposable contact lenses called MiSight, and hard contacts worn overnight known as orthokeratology, or ortho-K. But Ekdawi says the best approach is to protect children from developing myopia in the first place.

So how can spending time outside help?

That's what Ian Morgan wanted to find out. Morgan is a myopia researcher at the Australian National University. A couple of decades ago, he noticed that the rates of myopia in East Asia were much higher than they were in Sydney.

He knew from animal studies that light stimulates the eye to release the neurotransmitter dopamine, which can slow the eyeball from stretching. "Australians are famous for their outdoor-oriented lifestyle," he thought. "Maybe there's a link between getting outside a lot and preventing the development of myopia."

To test that theory, he and his colleagues designed a two-year study involving more than 4,000 6 and 12-year-olds in Sydney. Turns out, the researchers were right.

" The children who reported spending more time outdoors were less likely to be myopic and, we showed later on, less likely to become myopic," Morgan says of the finding , which was published in 2008.

Morgan's research caught the attention of Dr. Pei-Chang Wu , an ophthalmologist in Taiwan. As a retina specialist at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung, he'd seen the consequences of high myopia in patients as young as 10 with tears in their retina. Some even had retinal detachment – which can result in blindness if not treated quickly.

At the time, Wu's young son was starting first grade, and he worried about Taiwan's sky-high rates of myopia. Around 9 0 percent of teens there have it by the end of high school. Wu says the academic culture in Taiwan's primary schools didn't allow for much outdoor recess. "Many teachers want students to practice their homework during recess," he says.

But Wu convinced his son's elementary school to increase outdoor time. He also recruited a control school. A year later, his son's school had half as many new myopia cases as the other school. "We saw the results – they were very successful," Wu says.

He did more research, at more schools, and eventually convinced Taiwan's Ministry of Education to encourage all primary schools to send students out doors for at least 2 hours a day, every day. The program launched in September 2010. And after decades of trending upward, the rate of myopia among Taiwan's elementary school students began falling – from an all-time high of 50% in 2011 down to 45.1% by 2015 . It's a major achievement, says Ian Morgan.

"Certainly the people who have led the field are the people in Taiwan," Morgan says.

Other studies have found that outdoor time can reduce the chances that kids will develop myopia even if they're doing lots of near work, such as reading or looking at screens – something that has also risen dramatically in recent years. Outdoor time also helps even if kids have parents who have myopia.

To get that eyesight protection, research suggests kids should be spending at least two hours a day outdoors – every single day. And the younger you intervene, the better.

How to cut back on junk food in your child's diet — and when not to worry

"To me, it's like, eat your vegetables. You have to spend time outside," Ekdawi says.

It doesn't even matter if it's sunny or cloudy – or what the kids are doing. "You can go to the park, you can ride your bike, you can sit and be a tree, walk your dog. All these things count," she says.

And if you are worried about leaving time for homework, Ekdawi suggests having kids do that outside, too. As long as they are outdoors, that's what matters.

Italian actor Roberto Benigni to join Pope Francis for World Children’s Day

Pope Francis will be joined by Italian actor Roberto Benigni and soccer star Gianluigi Buffon as the pontiff celebrates World Children’s Day over the last weekend in May.

The Vatican announced on Thursday that World Children’s Day will “kick off” on Saturday, May 25, at 3:30 p.m. with a soccer match between kids and professional soccer players in Rome’s Olympic Stadium led by Buffon, the goalie who helped Italy achieve victory in the 2006 World Cup.

On the second day of the event, Benigni, best known for his Oscar-winning film “Life Is Beautiful,” will give a short speech at the end of Pope Francis’ Mass and Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, May 26. 

World Children’s Day is a new initiative by Pope Francis sponsored by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education in collaboration with the Catholic community of Sant’Egidio , the Auxilium Cooperative , and the Italian Football Federation. 

The Vatican is expecting children from more than 100 countries to travel to Rome for the weekend event with the pope.

When Pope Francis first announced the establishment of World Children’s Day in December 2023, he said: “Like Jesus, we want to put children at the center and care for them.”

According to Vatican News, Pope Francis was inspired to create World Children’s Day by a 9-year-old boy named Alessandro who proposed the idea to the pope to have an international event like World Youth Day (an international gathering for young people ages 16 to 35) for younger children.

The two-day event will culminate with Mass for the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity with the pope in St. Peter’s Square at 10:30 a.m. on May 26.

Franciscan Father Enzo Fortunato is organizing World Children’s Day for the Vatican. He said the goal is to “look at the world through the eyes of children, who are the hope of the people, their future.”

“I publicly thank Roberto Benigni and all those who have decided to work and donate their time and talent to children all over the world,” he added.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The elderly must not be accused of saddling younger generations with their medical expenses and pensions -- a notion which foments intergenerational conflict and drives older people into isolation, Pope Francis said.

"The accusation that the elderly 'rob the young of their future' is nowadays present everywhere," the pope wrote in his message for World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, a church celebration that will tak e place July 28.

Even in the most advanced and modern societies "there is now a widespread conviction that the elderly are burdening the young with the high cost of the social services that they require, and in this way are diverting resources from the development of the community and thus from the young," he wrote in the message released May 14.

Such a mentality "assumes that the survival of the elderly puts that of the young at risk, that to favor the young it is necessary to neglect or even suppress the elderly," he wrote.

Yet the pope stressed that "intergenerational conflict is a fallacy and the poisoned fruit of conflict."

"To set the young against the old is an unacceptable form of manipulation," he wrote.

The 2024 celebration marks the fourth edition of World Day for Grandparents and the elderly. In 2021, Pope Francis instituted the world day to be observed each year on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the liturgical memorial of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.

In his message for this year's celebration, the pope emphasized that "God never abandons his children," even as they grow weak and "can risk appearing useless." But today, a "conspiracy surrounding the life of the elderly" often results in their abandonment by those close to them.

"The loneliness and abandonment of the elderly is not by chance or inevitable, but the fruit of decisions -- political , economic, social and personal decisions -- that fail to acknowledge the infinite dignity of each person," he wrote.

The pope explained that such a phenomenon occurs "once we lose sight of the value of each individual and people are then judged in terms of their cost, which is in some cases considered too high to pay."

Unfortunately, he said , the elderly themselves can succumb to this cost-benefit mindset; "they are made to consider themselves a burden and to feel that they should be the first to step aside."

The pope then recounted the Bible story in which the elderly Naomi encourages her two daughters-in-law to return to their hometowns after the death of her husband and children since she sees herself as a burden to them. "Her words reflect the rigid social and religious conventions of her day, which apparently seal her own fate," the pope wrote.

While Orpah returns home, grateful for the encouragement, Ruth "is not afraid to challenge customs and inbred patterns of thought" and "courageously remains at her side," he wrote.

The pope encouraged all people to "express our gratitude to all those people who, often at great sacrifice, follow in practice the example of Ruth, as they care for an older person or simply demonstrate daily closeness to relatives or acquaintances who no longer have anyone else."

Pope Francis also pointed out how in poorer countries elderly people are often left alone because their children are forced to emigrate, and in regions ravaged by conflict young men are called into conflict while women and children flee for safety, leaving elderly people alone in areas "where abandonment and death seem to reign supreme."

In a statement released with the pope's message , Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, which organizes the world day, lamented the "bitter companion" that is loneliness in the lives of elderly people.

"Attending to our grandparents and the elderly ," he said, "i s not only a sign of gratitude and affection, but a necessity in the construction of a more human and fraternal society."

The cardinal's message was also accompanied by pastoral guidelines and liturgical resources for parishes and dioceses. The guidelines suggest that Catholics visit the elderly people within their own community, share with them the pope's message an d p ray together.

The document said that to involve the elderly in the day, " o lder people can be asked to offer special prayers for young people and for peace."

"The ministry of intercession is a real vocation of the elderly," it said.
