ENGL2033 – Creative Writing 2: Short-form fiction

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: Develop creative writing and reading skills in relation to concepts, topics, craft, technique and voice.
- ULO2: Apply key theoretical and practical concepts and techniques in creative writing.
- ULO3: Appraise and critique students’ writing in workshop environment.
- ULO4: Evaluate your own creative writing processes.
- ULO5: Critique and analyse literary and theoretical texts.
General Assessment Information
Late Assessment Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted , up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.
This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Assessment Type 1 : Participatory task Indicative Time on Task 2 : 42 hours Due: Ongoing, Weeks 1-12 Weighting: 25%
Preparatory reading of set texts and completion of writing exercises, for discussion. Answering questions in weekly tutorials and contributing meaningfully to class discussion. Providing critical feedback on other students’ creative works.
- Develop creative writing and reading skills in relation to concepts, topics, craft, technique and voice.
- Apply key theoretical and practical concepts and techniques in creative writing.
- Appraise and critique students’ writing in workshop environment.
- Critique and analyse literary and theoretical texts.
Creative Work (Major)
Assessment Type 1 : Creative work Indicative Time on Task 2 : 48 hours Due: Week 12, Sunday 23:55, 29/10/2023 Weighting: 50%
Students will complete a substantive creative work and reflective essay. Further information pertaining to the task can be found on the iLearn site for the unit.

Creative work (Minor)
Assessment Type 1 : Creative work Indicative Time on Task 2 : 15 hours Due: Week 7, Sunday 23:55, 10/09/2023 Weighting: 25%
Students will complete a creative writing assignment. Further information pertaining to the task can be found on the iLearn site for the unit.

Delivery and Resources
Lectures and tutorials start in Week 1.
Students are expected to attend live lectures or listen to recorded lectures before attending their classes each week.

OUA or External Students: Please be prepared to participate in the weekly tutorials via the iLearn Discussion Forums beginning in week 1 .

Major: Creative Writing
Which colleges offer a major in creative writing.
Creative Writing majors weave a rich tapestry of storytelling, exploring forms such as poetry, personal essays, memoirs, short stories, scriptwriting, novels, literary journalism, and even video games. It could be a favorite line in a movie, play, or book that lures an audience in and changes their world.
Telling a story can shed light on societal issues that would otherwise receive little or no attention. By evoking emotion, the story and its characters captivate the reader. People become invested in the story, the impact of the problem on the characters’ lives, and the outcome. Creative writing humanizes experiences in a way that may foster compassion for others. A compelling creative writer draws readers in so that they become engaged in the story.
Your imagination, mindset, and self-expression will be challenged and sharpened as a creative writing major. You’ll explore multiple creative writing forms. Creative writing challenges you to dig deep and learn about yourself and others.
What does a student majoring in Creative Writing study?
To develop their skills, creative writing majors will take courses in historical and contemporary literature and participate in writing workshops. Such courses or workshops include, among others:
