IELTS Essay, topic: The advantages and disadvantages of globalization

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

Even though globalization affects the world’s economies in a very positive way, its negative side should not be forgotten. Discuss.

Globalization is such a commonly used term in the century. It simply means that the world has become integrated economically, socially, politically and culturally through the advances of technology, transportation and communication. It is undeniable that globalization has resulted in both positive and negative effects which must be addressed accordingly.

positive and negative effects of globalization ielts essay

Secondly, several companies from the more developed countries have already ventured to establish foreign operations or branches to take advantage of the low cost of labor in the poorer countries. This kind of business activity will provide more influx of cash or investment funds into the less developed countries.

However, one cannot deny the negative effects which derived from globalization. One crucial social aspect is the risk and danger of epidemic diseases which can easily be spread as the transportation becomes easier and faster in today’s advanced society. This is evidenced in the recent birds flu disease which has infected most Asian countries over a short period of time.

As large corporations invest or take over many offshore businesses, a modern form of colonization will also evolve which may pose certain power pressure on the local governments of the less developed countries. Unemployment rates in the more developed regions such as Europe may also escalate as corporations choose to outsource to the cheaper work force from Asian countries.

In conclusion. to reiterate that globalization is inevitable and we must urge individuals, companies and governments to use a more balanced approach by taking the appropriate steps to deal with matters relating to the financial or economical gains verses the social, political or ecological concerns of the world.

This essay is too long, 318 words instead of 250-265. Otherwise (except for some minor grammatical errors) it is a very nice work. It covers the task, has the right structure, the paragraphs are coherent and are logically connected by elegantly used linking words, the structure of sentences is fine and so is your vocabulary. Seems worthy of Band 7.5 or 8.

Globalisation has both advantages and disadvantages. Discuss both and give your opinion.

Sample answer:.

Globalisation has become a prominent feature of the modern world, with both positive and negative effects on economies, cultures, and societies. In this essay, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation and provide my opinion on the matter.

On the one hand, globalisation has led to increased economic interdependence among countries, resulting in greater access to markets and resources. This has facilitated the growth of international trade and investment, leading to economic growth and development in many parts of the world. Moreover, globalisation has also contributed to the spread of technology and knowledge, leading to advancements in various fields such as medicine, communication, and transportation.

On the other hand, globalisation has also given rise to several challenges and drawbacks. One of the major disadvantages is the widening gap between the rich and the poor, both within and among countries. This has led to increased inequality and social unrest in many parts of the world. Furthermore, globalisation has also resulted in the loss of cultural diversity and the homogenisation of societies, as Western values and norms become dominant in many regions.

In my opinion, while globalisation has brought about numerous benefits, such as economic growth and technological advancements, the negative consequences cannot be overlooked. It is essential for policymakers and stakeholders to address the challenges posed by globalisation and work towards creating a more equitable and sustainable global economy. This can be achieved through the implementation of policies that promote fair trade, protect workers’ rights, and preserve cultural diversity.

In conclusion, globalisation has both advantages and disadvantages. While it has contributed to economic growth and technological progress, it has also led to increased inequality and cultural homogenisation. It is crucial for the international community to address these challenges and strive towards a more inclusive and sustainable globalisation.

Globalization essay topics and questions for writing task 2 IELTS

Home  »  IELTS writing task 2 questions » Writing Task 2: Globalisation essays IELTS topics and questions

Task 2 globalisation essay questions are very common in the IELTS exam.  Before we get into looking at globalisation task 2 examples, there’s a small point to make about spelling. Recently, a student asked me, ‘What is the difference between globalization and globalisation?’ The answer is, not much. Either spelling is acceptable, the only difference is that spelling it with an s is generally preferred in the UK, while the word is more commonly spelt with a z in the USA. All you need to do is be consistent, meaning that if you use the word more than once in your answer, spell it the same way both times. In order to be fair, we will write the next part of the article using the z spelling.

Globalization: Positive and Negative Effects Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Globalization signifies increasing economic and cultural integrations between different states. It is one of the primary features of modern world economy and society, built on countries’ interdependency and unity of values of diverse nations. Globalization can be illustrated, for instance, by dollarization and global demand for McDonald’s products. Therefore, in my opinion, to date, globalization can be characterized by the interchange of products, knowledge, and technical achievements between various states, striving for standardization of economy and law, and the development of foreign commerce.

Positive and Negative Effects

Although the term “globalization” appeared several decades ago, there is still no ambiguous attitude to this phenomenon. On the one hand, globalization contributes to strengthening the world economy, appropriate resources allocation, the interaction between different countries, and the development of lagging countries due to access to up-to-date technology. On the other hand, there is a risk that it causes unemployment, overpopulation, climate injustice. In addition, its potential negative aspects include the states’ fear of losing sovereignty and traditions due to orientation toward the global interests and culture. Thus, globalization has merits and demerits that provide it with admirers and opponents.

Counteraction to Its Negative Aspects

Globalization can be more effective and bring more positive results if people counteract its negative aspects.

Overpopulation: First of all, I can recommend preparing for population growth: people can develop social protection institutions and labor marketing. Secondly, it is possible to improve the educational system and update the unemployment insurance: it will contribute to decreasing the level of unemployment.

Global Issues: It would be helpful to support small and medium businesses and lagging countries because orienting toward the world economy causes a risk to develop only large organizations and prospering states. In addition, each country should maintain the patriotic spirit of its population and does not allow global tendencies to replace their traditions.

Climate Injustice: It is necessary to focus more on climate change and the environmental state. For instance, people can develop the technology and investment in this sphere to improve the technological capacity and make them more ecologically friendly.

Therefore, globalization is a significant phenomenon of the modern world that needs to be thoroughly explored to enjoy its positive aspects and counteract its adverse effects.

Band 8+: Globalization is positive for economies but its negative sides should not be ignored. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Globalization has undoubtedly transformed economies worldwide, fostering growth, innovation, and interconnectedness. While the positive impacts on economies are clear, it is essential to acknowledge the negative aspects that accompany this phenomenon. This essay will argue that while globalization is beneficial for economic development, its adverse effects must not be overlooked.

One of the primary benefits of globalization is the acceleration of economic growth. By opening up markets, countries can trade more freely, leading to increased exports and imports. This economic interdependence has driven innovation, as companies compete on a global scale, striving to improve their products and services. For instance, technological advancements and the spread of information have enabled businesses to operate more efficiently and reach new markets. Additionally, globalization has facilitated the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI), which has been instrumental in boosting the economies of developing nations, creating jobs, and improving infrastructure.

However, globalization also has significant drawbacks that cannot be ignored. One major concern is the widening gap between rich and poor. While multinational corporations and wealthy nations reap substantial benefits, many developing countries struggle with economic disparity. The influx of foreign companies can sometimes lead to the exploitation of local labor, with workers facing poor working conditions and low wages. Moreover, small local businesses often find it challenging to compete with large multinational corporations, leading to their decline and negatively impacting the local economy.

Another critical issue is the environmental impact of globalization. Increased industrial activities and transportation contribute to pollution and climate change. The demand for natural resources has led to deforestation, habitat destruction, and depletion of essential resources. For example, the expansion of palm oil plantations in Southeast Asia has resulted in significant deforestation and loss of biodiversity. Addressing these environmental concerns requires global cooperation and sustainable practices, which are often challenging to implement due to varying economic interests.

In conclusion, while globalization undoubtedly drives economic growth and innovation, its negative aspects, such as economic inequality and environmental degradation, must be addressed. Therefore, I believe that a balanced approach is essential, where the benefits of globalization are harnessed while mitigating its adverse effects through inclusive policies and sustainable practices. Only then can the full potential of globalization be realized in a way that benefits all members of the global community.

Essay: The positive & The negative sides of globalization | Solved Essays for IELTS PDF Download

Even though globalization affects the world’s economies in a positive way, its negative side should not be forgotten. Discuss.

In the present age, globalization is playing an increasingly important role in our lives. But in the meantime whether it is a blessing or a curse has sparked a heated debate. Some people argue that globalization has a fundamentally beneficial influence on our lives, while many others contend that it has a detrimental effect as well. A convincing argument can be made about globalization not only playing a pivotal role in the development of technology and economy, but also promoting the cultural exchange between different countries. To start with, it is the globalization that impelled many corporate to become international groups, thereby making a contribution to the local technology and employment. Specifically, when a multinational group establish a factory in a developing country, the new equipment, the new management skills and the job vacancies are all in the best interest of the local society. Moreover, people worldwide can get to know each other better through globalization. It is easy to see that more and more Hollywood blockbusters show cultures different from American, some recent examples are ‘Kungfu Panda’ and ‘The Mummy’. Admittedly, the profit driven side of globalization has severely affected young people. Today, in the metropolises in different countries, it is very common to see teenagers wearing NIKE T-shirts and Adidas footwear, playing Hip-Hop music on Apple iPods and eating at KFC. The culture that took a thousand years to form just seems similar in these cities; it seems as though you can only distinguish them by their language. Meanwhile, in some developing countries, sweat workshops are always a concerning issue. For instance, reports show that some teenagers employed by NIKE’s contractors work in smelly factories over 14 hours a day, but are only paid fifty cents per hour. To sum up, I would concede that globalization does come with some adverse effects. Despite that fact, benefits created by it far outweigh the disadvantages. Overall, I am convinced that we should further promote globalization and meanwhile the local government should take measures to combat culture assimilation and sweat workshops.
