The GSEM at the University of Verona solicits applications for admission to the joint Ph.D. programme in Economics and Finance offered in Verona . The degree will be awarded jointly by the Universities of Padua, Venice and Verona. Candidates interested in the programme are strongly urged to apply for a scholarship also at the Universities of Padua and Venice .

The Ph.D. programme in Economics and Finance is designed to train doctoral candidates in a broad area of advanced study in quantitative methods, economics and finance. The GSEM recruits promising students from Italy and abroad and all courses are taught in English. Students willing to focus on Economics should also apply for the Ph.D. programmes offered by Padua (Economics and Management) and Venice (Economics).

The admission procedure consists of an evaluation of candidates' qualifications. To apply candidates should follow the instructions in the official Call .

Deadline: applications must be received by June 17, 2011 . Successful candidates will be notified by email by July 31, 2011 . The Programme will start on October 3, 2011 , but a preliminary (highly recommended) course in Mathematics will be offered starting September 19, 2011.

During the Fall term (October-December), Ph.D. students will attend compulsory courses in Verona (Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Game Theory, Microeconomics 1, Organization Theory). During the Winter term (January-March), students will attend compulsory courses offered in Padua. During the Spring term (April-June), electives courses will take place in Venice, Padua, and Verona.

The Department of Economics at the University of Verona is offering three PNRR-funded PhD scholarships in Economics and Finance with duration of four years. The positions are constrained to the development of one of these topics:

• “Climate change, agriculture and conflicts: analysis and adaptation strategies” (ECO01)
• “Economic and tariff levers in the governance of urban waste management aimed at reducing residual waste” (ECO02)
• “Digital transformation to improve customer satisfaction of highly customized products” (ECO03)

The PhD Program in Economics and Finance of the University of Verona trains academic and professional figures able to autonomously carry out research in economics and finance at universities, research institutes, consulting firms, public and private companies. PhD graduates undertake job positions requiring critical and problem solving skills, in which to matter are the ability to identify a problem and analyze it using economic reasoning, manage and process data through a statistical approach, interpret the findings and communicate results and implications.

The four-year PhD Program in Economics and Finance consists of a course-work part and a research part. During the first part of the program, students attend advanced courses (both compulsory and elective). Students then develop an independent study and research agenda under the supervision of two department professors. The program is completed by the final thesis containing research contributions following high-quality international level. Our PhD Program also offers personal research funds, access to dedicated room and Department facilities, and financial support for study and research periods in foreign universities or institutions.

The University of Verona is among the top hundred world universities with less than 50 years in the rankings of the Times Higher Education. In the RepEc ranking, the Department of Economics ranks in the top 10% of the Italian distribution and in the top 25% of the world distribution of research departments and institutions in Economics.

How to apply

Admission requirements :.

To be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme, applicants must participate in an open competition based on qualifications and examinations. Admission is by limited positions.

Applications may be submitted, without age or nationality restrictions, by candidates who:

• have studied in Italy and hold a qualification such as laurea magistrale, laurea specialistica or laurea del vecchio ordinamento (pre D.M. 509/1999)
• hold a university degree equivalent to the degrees mentioned above (Master of Science/Art), which grants access to the doctorate in the country where they completed their university studies.

Professional qualifications (e.g., Master of Business Administration - MBA, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - MBBS, etc.) do not grant access to PhD studies.

Those who will graduate by the date of enrolment in the Ph.D. program may also apply and participate in the competition.

Evaluation criteria for admission :

The selection procedure aims to ascertain the applicants’ academic background and scientific research aptitude to ensure an appropriate comparative assessment.

Taxes and Contributions :

Ph.D. students holding a scholarship must pay a single instalment at the time of enrolment of € 452.00 (€186.00 regional tax + €250.00 University fees + € 16.00 stamp duty)

Ph.D. students who do not hold a scholarship are exempt from payment of University fees and must pay a single instalment at the time of enrolment of € 202.00 (€186.00 regional tax + € 16.00 stamp duty)
