Essay on National Unity Day In English

Know more about the rashtriya ekta diwas.

In this essay, we are going to get a complete set of information about this important day in the history of India, which is none other than the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. When we come across this day, we have Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s picture in our mind. He had played an immense and important role in uniting our country. This is why this day is being celebrated on his birthday.

How Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was started?

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was begun in 2014. This initiative was taken by the government of India in New Delhi. And the best part is that it was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. This day is celebrated on 31st October, which was the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Every year, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated on the same day.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister and also Home Minister of India. He was also called the Patron Saint of the Civil Services of India. People gave him the title the ‘Iron Man of India.’ He became the Deputy Prime Minister of India when our country got freedom from British rule. After that, he took over as the Union Home Minister.

At the time, when the British rule left India, India had about 565 princely states, where independence took place. These states were not mentioned in the Union of India at that time. It was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who worked hard and used his military capability to unite these states within the Union of India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was very clear in his objective that the map of our country should be united from its starting to the end.

From this thing, it is very much clear that he was the man behind United India. The reason is that he had done many important works and took many initiatives to maintain the harmony of India. To remember the hard efforts and motivational spirit of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was started in India.

The role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in India’s unity

As mentioned above, apart from it, there is a lot to know about his role and contribution to sustaining the integrity of our country. Before independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an eminent social worker, as well as a freedom fighter. He was associated with the Indian National Congress. And he also led the Satyagraha in Gujarat.

At that time, he also played an immense and active role in two movements, which were Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement. Even though he was a leading freedom fighter of India, he was given the role of administrator. He performed this role very well and during the independence of India, his role has been considered more significant.

Firstly, the unity of more than 500 princely states was a huge issue after getting independence, but he easily resolved this issue. Once all the princely states met, a new and strong India was made and nowadays, it is developing day by day in every sector. Now, we are living in India, which has many religions, castes, sects, and communities. We are living all together without any kind of discrimination. This thing was possible only because of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Sardar Patel put in all hard efforts to threaten some and even persuade many with military action whenever necessary. He was such a dedicating personality at that time. He was not convinced to make any sacrifice in his hard effort, which may stop him to fulfill his vision and dream to make India united. Appreciating the initiatives and works of Sardar Patel, he is given tribute as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day.

The Government of India has given the honor by developing the Statue of Unity, which is dedicated to the first Home Minister of India. This statue dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is known to be the highest statue or monument in the world. It was his determination and passion to make India united and this is why he became the Iron Man of India.

First Rashtriya Ekta Diwas

It is already mentioned above that this day was started to celebrate in 2014. This decision was taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs via an official notification. Based on the official statement of the ministry, it has been said that ‘the observance of National unity Day will give a chance to re-establish the inherent strength and resilience of our country in the face of potential and real threats or challenges to the integrity, unity, and security of our country.’

In 2014, on 31st October, the day of the 139th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, many programs were scheduled at many places.  This was the first time when the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was celebrated in India. In major cities like Nagpur, Delhi, and Mumbai , Run for Unity was arranged.

A number of sports personalities and politicians were a part of these programs and celebrations. Shri Narendra Modi , our Hon’ble Prime Minister along with the Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India had paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Patel Chowk located in New Delhi. This is how Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was started in India and now, every year, it is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm.

Essay on National Unity Day

Essay on National Unity Day in English | Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Essay

Essay on national unity day.

National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is a significant observance in India that celebrates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This day is dedicated to honoring the “Iron Man of India,” who played a pivotal role in uniting the various princely states into a single, unified nation. National Unity Day is not just a tribute to Patel but also a reminder of the importance of unity and integration in a diverse and pluralistic country like India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. He was a prominent leader during the Indian independence movement and a key figure in post-independence India. Patel’s legacy is particularly significant in the context of national unity because of his relentless efforts to bring together the more than 560 princely states that existed in India after gaining independence from British colonial rule.

At the time of India’s independence in 1947, the country was a patchwork of territories and princely states, each with its own rulers and governance systems. The integration of these states into a unified India was a monumental task that required exceptional diplomatic skills, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment. This is where Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel emerged as the “Iron Man” who worked tirelessly to unite the nation.

In 1947, Patel was appointed as India’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs. His responsibilities included the monumental task of persuading the princely states to join the newly formed Indian Union. Patel used a combination of diplomacy, persuasion, and even coercion when necessary to bring the princely states into the fold of the Indian Republic.

One of the most notable achievements of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the successful integration of the princely state of Hyderabad, which was the largest and most challenging integration effort. It was a complex operation that involved military action, but Patel’s determination and decisiveness ensured that Hyderabad, along with many other princely states, became part of India.

National Unity Day is celebrated on October 31st every year to commemorate Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary and to recognize his invaluable contribution to nation-building. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, integrity, and the strength that comes from being a diverse yet harmonious nation.

  • National Unity Day serves as a reminder that this diversity is a source of strength and richness for the nation.
  • It encourages the idea of unity in diversity, where people from various backgrounds coexist harmoniously.

4. The Role of Youth in Promoting Unity:

8. Contemporary Relevance:

  • A united India can address various challenges, including economic development, social justice, and security.

9. The Symbolism of the Statue of Unity:

  • It stands as a symbol of unity and an architectural marvel, drawing visitors from all over the world.

10. Promoting National Unity Throughout the Year:

  • While National Unity Day is a specific date of observance, the promotion of national unity should be a year-round endeavor.
  • It requires ongoing efforts in education, public discourse, and policy to strengthen the bonds of unity among all Indians.

In conclusion, National Unity Day is a significant occasion that celebrates the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and underscores the importance of unity and integration in India.
