Timmakka is born at Gubbi taluk in Tumakur district Karnataka. She is referred as Salumarada Timmkka. Salumarada Timmaka is a household name in Karnataka. She is one of the great environmentalists of India. She has earned her pet name ‘Salumara’ because of her love towards trees. ‘Salumara’ in Kannada means rows of trees. Now popularly known as the Mother of Trees. 111 Year old Timmakka shot to fame for planting and nurturing 365 Banyan trees along a four kilometer highway stretch, between Hulikal and Kudoor villages, near her husband’s native place in Tumakuru.

Timmakka’s story is of girt and determination. She reportedly wanted to end up her life as she couldn’t conceive, but with support of husband, sir Bikkala Chikkayya, she found solace in planting trees. The couple arduously worked in the fields during the day, planted trees and cared them. From 10 plants in the first year, they kept planting more saplings in the later years.

Although Timmakka did not receive a formal education, her work has been honoured with national citizen’s Award of India. She has been recognized by the Government of India and was conferred with the Padmashri award in 2019 there is also an environment organization named after her in US called ‘Timmakka’s Resources for environmental Education’. Timmakka has been appointed as Karnataka environment ambassador with a Government Cabinet rank by the Government of Karnataka.

The mission of preserving the environment is taken forward by Timmakka’s son. Sri Umesh B.N. He has been planting and tending trees along the roads, schools, public places and on the mountain and hill tops. He is also successfully running the Prathvi Bachav Movement. He has his own nursery and distributes plants to the farmers who are interested in growing plants.
