Supernatural manga The Case Study of Vanitas has been confirmed to be taking a break from publication by Gangan Joker magazine. The next issue of the magazine is slated to release on June 22, which will mark the start of the manga's hiatus.

Jun Mochizuki's manga follows the legend of the vampire Vanitas and vampire specialist Noé. Vanitas was born during a blue moon , which is cause for derision by his fellow vampires. This leaves him feeling very lonely and fearful. Vanitas pens a book entitled the "Book of Vanitas", which is said to doom all vampires of the crimson moon . Cut to 19th Century Paris, Noé is currently searching for this book for his own reasons.

The first volume The Case Study of Vanitas debuted in December 2015 by Mochizuki in Gangan Joker magazine. Since then, the manga has amassed 10 collected volumes. The English translation of the manga is published by Yen Press.

The Case Study of Vanitas was also adapted into an anime last year. It ran for one season, consisting of 24 episodes. Vanitas was voiced by Natsuki Hanae, whose notable roles include Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer , Falco Grice in Attack on Titan and Takumi Aldini in Food Wars . Noé is played by Kaito Ishikawa, who may be recognized for voicing characters such as Tobio Kageyama in Haikyuu!! , Genos in One Punch Man and Tenya Iida in My Hero Academia .

The Case Study of Vanitas is not the only published work Mochizuki put out. In 2009, she illustrated and wrote a six-chapter one-shot entitled Crimson Shell ; which was her first published project. Crimson Shell is a sci-fi adventure following Claudia the Rose Witch and the complicated twists around her friend Xeno in the backdrop of a crazy experiments and questioned loyalties. Her more famous work is Pandora Hearts , a manga following Oz Vessalius, a teenage boy who is imprisoned in the Abyss for a sin he knows nothing about. The manga ran for 24 volumes and was adapted into an anime, which spanned one season.

The length of the manga's hiatus is yet to be confirmed. Gangan Joker magazine will announce its return on the publication's official Twitter page.

Set in 19th century France in a world where humans and vampires exist, a young vampire named Noé is on his way to Paris in search of a grimoire called the Book of Vanitas , which is said to be able to curse vampires. However, on the way there an incident leads to him meeting a self-proclaimed doctor specializing in vampires named Vanitas, and it seems he is in possession of the book. Soon, Noé finds himself thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires!

The Case Study of Vanitas began as a manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki that has been serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker shonen manga magazine since December 2015. As of June 2020, eight collected tankobon volumes have been released. In April 2020, the manga was put on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it resumed publication in November of that year. The manga is licensed for English release in North America by Yen Press.

An anime adaptation was announced at AnimeJapan in March 2021. It is being animated by BONES and features Tomoyuki Itamura Koyomimonogatari , Monogatari Series Second Season , Owarimonogatari ) as director with Deko Akao ( Arakawa Under the Bridge , Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks? , Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway ) handling series composition, Yoshiyuki Ito ( Carole & Tuesday , Fullmetal Alchemist , Space Dandy ) as character designer and chief animation director, and Yuki Kajiura ( Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Fate/Zero , Puella Magi Madoka Magica ) composing the music. The opening theme song is "Sora to Kyo" by sasanomaly. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 2, 2021 on Tokyo MX, BS11, and other channels. It will run for two cours, but whether or not each cour will be consecutive is yet to be announced.

Vanitas (Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae) A human who inherited his name and the grimoire Book of Vanitas from the “Vampire of the Blue Moon.” He is a self-proclaimed doctor specializing in vampirism. He has a tendency to achieve his goals by any means necessary, even if it drags in those around him.

Noé Archiviste (Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa) A young vampire who has come to Paris in search of the Book of Vanitas . He is an exceptional fighter and has a good battle sense. He is the type who acts on his feelings honestly.

Jeanne (Voiced by: Inori Minase) A vampire girl known as the “Witch of Flames.” Despite her attractive appearance, she was once feared by vampires as the executioner Blow. She is now Luca’s Chevalier Knight.

Luca (Voiced by: Shino Shimoji) A polite vampire boy who is second in rank to the queen. He works with Jeanne and is in search of the Book of Vanitas in order to save his brother.

Dominique (Voiced by: Ai Kayano) A vampire dignified in both appearance and tone, she is the daughter of the Marquis de Sade, a prestigious vampire aristocrat and lord of the Otherworld. She is a childhood friend of Noe's and cares for her at every turn.

Teacher (Voiced by: Akira Ishida) Noé teacher and the one who sent him the letter to find the Book of Vanitas .

Murr (Voiced by: Miyu Komaki) Noé’s fluffy white cat. She has monochromatic eyes and wears a ribbon brooch around her neck.

Dante (Voiced by: Taro Kiuchi) A young man whom Vanitas often uses as an informant. According to Vanitas, he is a jack-of-all-trades who can do almost anything for the right price.

Johann (Voiced by: Koji Yusa) A young man who wears glasses and works as an informant along with Dante and Riche. He has a distinctive tone of voice and is somewhat overprotective of Dante and Riche.

Riche (Voiced by: Riho Kuma) A girl who wears glasses and works as an informant along with Johann. She has a deep knowledge of history and speaks fast whenever she talks about it.

There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a full blue moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. Afraid and alone, he created the “Book of Vanitas,” a cursed grimoire that would one day take his vengeance on all vampires; this is how the story goes, at least.

Vanitas no Karte follows Noé Archiviste, a young man who is traveling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé’s surprise, an entirely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister…

The Case Study of Vanitas Manga Unveils Volume 11 Cover

The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte) series revealed the cover illustration for Volume 11 of the manga, which is set to release on April 22, 2024. The regular edition features an illustration of Vanitas holding a plate of Tarte Tatin with Noe and Murr behind him. Meanwhile, the special edition features the “Archiviste girl” with Noe at the back. The manga series is written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki.

As described by Square Enix , the plot of the 11th manga volume of The Case Study of Vanitas is as follows (spoilers ahead): “Another “fang that reveals blood.” After the fierce battle that Mikhail set up, Vanitas and his friends take a moment to rest. Behind the scenes, Count Saint-Germain approaches the Archiviste girl —This is a “story.” The promised hope and despair of vampires, humans, and half-breeds are set in motion once again. Volume 11 of a steampunk fantasy woven by human and vampire buddies that unravels memories.”

Special illustrations and postcards will also be given away as bonus gifts in selected stores in Japan. Pre-orders for Volume 11 of The Case Study of Vanitas manga are still available on Amazon , Rakuten , and Square Enix. Additionally, the special edition will include a 128-page “Brocante” booklet featuring comments and rough drawings of Vanitas and Noe’s character designs, taken from the author’s original 2000-page sketchbook before the series began in 2015.

The Case Study of Vanitas  is a steampunk-vampire-themed manga series by Jun Mozuchi. It has been serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker magazine since 2015. Studio BONES animated the series in 2021 and has a total of 24 episodes. Afterward, the series went on hiatus in May 2022 and returned a year later in May 2023. Mochizuki ( Pandora Hearts , Crimson-Shell ) launched the manga in Square Enix 's Gangan Joker magazine in December 2015. Square Enix published the seventh volume on October 21.

Yen Press has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English since its debut, and it describes the first volume:

Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?

The manga was listed on the American Library Association's (ALA's) Young Adult Library Services Association's (YALSA) 2018 list of Great Graphic Novels for Teens.

The Case Study of Vanitas is a story based in a fictional 19th-century Paris where humans and vampires share the city. The story revolves around Vanitas and his companion, Noe Archiviste. He was isolated because of their fear, and thus, he swore vengeance against the vampires born under the Red Moon. His name was none other than Vanitas. The narrative is a memoir from the eyes of Noe Archiviste. He delves into how he came to meet Vanitas, their journey together, and how it eventually ends.  

While he derives his name from an old vampire and uses his grimoire The Book of Vanitas. One wouldn’t be harshly criticized if they had mistaken Vanitas for a vampire. And that speaks for Vanitas himself, who is a human first and foremost. While he isn’t physically weak, he compensates for his lack of strength with his intelligence and grimoire. A combination of these two allows him to manipulate the actual names of vampires, making him a formidable presence within the series.

Noe Archiviste 

The sole survivor of the Archiviste clan, Noe is the narrator of the series and accompanies Vanitas on his journey of curing Vampires. While one may argue that Noe has been defeated several times within the series. It might be accurate, but his compassion and kindness prevent him from having a severe physical altercation.

Despite being a vampire himself, Noe treats vampires and humans as equally good creatures. It’s this good virtue that pulls him down from time to time. But make no mistake, with his ability to relive memories just by drinking the respective person’s blood. It is safe to say one wouldn’t want to get on his wrong side.

Lucius Oriflamme

He is one of the most powerful and influential characters in The Case Study of Vanitas. Despite his young age, he serves as the Grand Duke to the Vampire Queen herself. He’s an aristocrat through and through.

Despite his childlike demeanor, he’s quite skilled at manipulating others with his strategic ploys and engagement in political scenarios to further his motive and maintain his clan’s position of power. To top it off, he holds Jeanne as his Chevalier.

Prolific, Revered, and the guardian of Lucius Oriflamme, Ruthven is often considered one of the most essential characters in The Case Study of Vanitas. Playing a pivotal role in ending the war between humans and vampires, he now finds himself as a member of the Senate and is well-known amongst humans as well.

He sought peace between humans and vampires during the war, even acting as a peacemaker. Having been betrayed by his students, he no longer shares the same passion and is ready to use any means to seek his desires. Cold, ruthless, and feared by vampire society, with his powers yet to be showcased, he’s just a testament to the man that is Ruthven.

Jean-Jacques Chastel

Chastel is the protector and longtime companion of Chloe d’Apchier and the last surviving member of the d’Apchiers. His loyalty knows no bounds, as he goes on to sign a contract with the devil itself just to realize Chloe’s wish. He turns himself into the very beast the village feared in exchange for his actual name. He wreaks havoc on anyone who tries to hurt Chloe, a symbol of his genuine and sincere feelings towards her.

Despite holding a degree in Chemistry Majors, Archak found himself as a Journalist. His love for anime and choccy milk is unmatched! When not writing, Archak can be found indulging with motorcycles. After all, four wheels move the body but two wheels move the soul!
