Educational Assistant resume examples for 2024

An educational assistant resume should highlight skills like CPR, behavior management, and providing clerical support. As Dara Soljaga Ph.D., Associate Dean of Education at King's College, points out, "compassion, communication, collaboration, and accountability" are also crucial. When creating a resume, Jo Ann Donnenwirth , Dean of Nursing at Aultman College, recommends highlighting clinical experiences, specialty areas, and technical skills, including educational platforms. Jessica Tangen Daniels Ph.D. , Associate Provost - Innovation and Partnerships at Bethel University, emphasizes the importance of data analysis and grant writing experience, but also notes that it is essential to translate these experiences into a relevant context for the specific role.

How to format your educational assistant resume:.

  • Tailor your job title to match the educational assistant position you're applying for and ensure your work experience highlights achievements rather than responsibilities, such as 'Served special needs Pre-K students in a PPCD classroom, increasing their engagement by 25%' or 'Provided one-on-one support to children, reducing problematic behavior by 30%
  • Use the resume real estate wisely by focusing on measurable accomplishments and specific duties that demonstrate your capabilities, such as 'Prepared lesson materials, maintained a safe classroom environment, and delegated assigned duties' or 'Completed mandatory Professional Development requirements, attended educational conferences, and provided crisis intervention for medical needs/emergencies',
  • Keep your resume concise and to the point, aiming for one page and using bullet points to make it easy to scan. Avoid unnecessary words and focus on relevant experience and skills, such as 'Certified in Professional Crisis Management and Crisis Prevention Intervention' or 'Experienced with adaptive technology as related to early intervention services and data collection'

2. Add relevant education to your educational assistant resume

Your resume's education section should include:

  • The name of your school
  • The date you graduated ( Month, Year or Year are both appropriate)
  • The name of your degree

If you graduated more than 15 years ago, you should consider dropping your graduation date to avoid age discrimination.

Optional subsections for your education section include:

  • Academic awards (Dean's List, Latin honors, etc. )
  • GPA (if you're a recent graduate and your GPA was 3.5+)
  • Extra certifications
  • Academic projects (thesis, dissertation, etc. )

Other tips to consider when writing your education section include:

  • If you're a recent graduate, you might opt to place your education section above your experience section
  • The more work experience you get, the shorter your education section should be
  • List your education in reverse chronological order, with your most recent and high-ranking degrees first
  • If you haven't graduated yet, you can include "Expected graduation date" to the entry for that school

3. Next, create an educational assistant skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an educational assistant resume

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is a medical procedure that involves chest compression to help a patient breathe. This artificial ventilation helps in keeping the brain function in place and regulates blood throughout the body. CPR is a lifesaving procedure that is used in emergencies.

Direct supervision is a term used to indicate that a person is supervising a certain task or a certain person while being physically present or in close proximity. It refers to the presence of a person and the availability of their supervision in something if it is needed.

Behavioral issues are the tendencies of individuals displaying unpleasant behavior as a result of sickness or addiction.

Clerical support performs activities that must be done in every workplace in order to support the company going forward. These duties, which come within the category of clerical support, are typically delegated to entry-level employees since they are simple and easy to learn. Even though clerical duties like printing and filing are easy, they require time and in many instances, other workers are preoccupied with other activities and unable to keep up with all that needs to be accomplished. As a result, many businesses employ clerical support staff who are solely responsible for these duties.

Kindergarten is an early form of education that begins when a child is about five years old. During kindergarten, children learn the basic elements of reading, writing, and mathematics in addition to colors, telling time, sharing, and similar principles. Kindergarten classes are typically overseen by a single teacher who lectures on all of the subjects listed.

Data collection means to analyze and collect all the necessary information. It helps in carrying out research and in storing important and necessary information. The most important goal of data collection is to gather the information that is rich and accurate for statistical analysis.

Physical education includes the organization of games, exercises, challenges, or any activities related to a person's physical well-being. It aims to develop social and motor skills and physical attributes development among children, trainees, or clients.

  • CPR , 11.6%
  • Direct Supervision , 5.8%
  • Behavioral Issues , 5.6%
  • Other Skills , 70.4%

4. List your educational assistant experience

The most important part of any resume for an educational assistant is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of educational assistants" and "Managed a team of 6 educational assistants over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

If you have any of these certifications, make sure to put them on your educational assistant resume:

  • Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)

Job seeker holds letters "F-A-Q" to ask about writing resumes, cover letters, & other job materials

Throughout your assistant teacher resume, think about how you can show you’re a team player—without ever using that specific word in your skills list or job description bullet points. As a teacher assistant, you juggle a lot of balls in the air, from assisting the instructor with lesson plans and grading to providing one-on-one help to students to partnering with parents in their children’s learning. So, represent this “team player” idea by putting real experience on your resume that shows principals and administrators your eagerness to assist with education in various capacities.

You may or may not need to list certifications on your resume. This depends on the school, learning center, or academy as well as any state requirements that may be in effect. Check the job listing and work toward getting any needed certs for the role. Possible certifications you could run across include a Level I NYS Teacher Assistant Certification if you’re in New York, 12 ECE Units in California, and an ECE initial certificate for Washington State.

Nope! You’re always free to leave it off, and we suggest you do exclude it if you’re in a rush to send your resume to hiring teams. However, a resume objective does have the potential to make you stand out from the competition. Because assistant teachers are in such high demand, you could use the objective statement to highlight how your approach to education specifically addresses the challenges laid out in the job description.

How to Improve Your educational assistant Resume

Navigating resume pitfalls can mean the difference between landing an interview or not. Missing job descriptions or unexplained work history gaps can cause recruiters to hesitate. Let's not even talk about the impact of bad grammar, and forgetting your contact info could leave your potential employer hanging. Aim to be comprehensive, concise, and accurate.

Unexplained Year Gaps and Missing Job Experiences are a No-no

Gaps in your resume can prevent recruiters from hiring you if you don't explain them..

  • It's okay to have gaps in your work experience but always offer a valid explanation instead of just hiding it.
  • Use the gap to talk about positive attributes or additional skills you've learned.
  • Be honest and straightforward about the gap and explain it using a professional summary.

How to Optimize Your educational assistant Resume

Keep an eye out for these resume traps. Neglecting to detail your job roles or explain gaps in your career can lead to unnecessary doubts. Grammar blunders can reflect negatively on you, and without contact information, how can employers reach you? Be meticulous and complete.

A teacher's assistant is under investigation by Yadkinville police. She's accused of biting a student at Yadkin elementary school. The parents of that student say they're outraged and confused, but what they're focusing on is being there for their son.

Kimberly and Travis Cardwell say their son Levi told them last Tuesday after school that he'd gotten hurt.

"He said he had a bite," said Kimberly. "So I pulled his shirt down, and on the back of his shoulder, he did very much have a huge raised-up bite on his back."

She and her husband tried pressing him on what happened, but Levi — who is partially non-verbal with autism — ultimately shut down. Levi’s therapist revealed to the Cardwells, that a teacher's assistant may be involved.

Yadkin County Schools and the Yadkinville Police Department launched an investigation, and now Levi's teacher's assistant, Ivey Pauca, faces misdemeanor assault and child abuse charges.

Levi's father, Travis, said the entire situation is nothing short of frustrating.

"It's hard enough to get him to trust people, to be comfortable around people," he said. "Then something like this happens and you got the teacher, you know, it just sets up a lot of failure with all the struggles that we already got to deal with."

The Cardwells say they’re worried about the long-term effects this could have on their son.

"She was an adult, and she bit my son," said Kimberly. "I put my faith, I guess you could say, in them to protect my son while he's there. That's your job as an educator, and while he's with you, you're supposed to keep him safe. And then that's not keeping him safe."

"I don't know how this will all play out with her," said Travis. "But she ought not to be able to be in the school system ever again. I mean, period. There should be no expungement there should be no, I've worked it out now. You had your chance; you ruined it. You hurt a kid. That should be it."

School officials say Pauca resigned a day after police were contacted. She was served a warrant on Monday and will appear in court in June.
