What is a research rationale?

Think of a research rationale as a set of reasons that explain why a study is necessary and important based on its background. It's also known as the justification of the study, rationale, or thesis statement.

Essentially, you want to convince your reader that you're not reciting what other people have already said and that your opinion hasn't appeared out of thin air. You've done the background reading and identified a knowledge gap that this rationale now explains.

A research rationale is usually written toward the end of the introduction. You'll see this section clearly in high-impact-factor international journals like Nature and Science. At the end of the introduction there's always a phrase that begins with something like, "here we show..." or "in this paper we show..." This text is part of a logical sequence of information, typically (but not necessarily) provided in this order:

This might sound somewhat abstract. A helpful way to formulate a research rationale is to answer the question, “Why is this study necessary and important?”

Generally, that something has never been done before should not be your only motivation. Use it only If you can give the reader valid evidence why we should learn more about this specific phenomenon.

A well-written introduction covers three key elements:

  • What's the background to the research?
  • What has been done before (information relevant to this particular study, but NOT a literature review)?
  • Research rationale

Now, let's see how you might answer the question.

1. This study complements scientific knowledge and understanding

Discuss the shortcomings of previous studies and explain how'll correct them. Your short review can identify:

  • Methodological limitations . The methodology (research design, research approach or sampling) employed in previous works is somewhat flawed.

Example : Here , the authors claim that previous studies have failed to explore the role of apathy “as a predictor of functional decline in healthy older adults” (Burhan et al., 2021). At the same time, we know a lot about other age-related neuropsychiatric disorders, like depression.

Their study is necessary, then, “to increase our understanding of the cognitive, clinical, and neural correlates of apathy and deconstruct its underlying mechanisms.” (Burhan et al., 2021).

  • Contextual limitations . External factors have changed and this has minimized or removed the relevance of previous research.

Example : You want to do an empirical study to evaluate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of tourists visiting Sicily. Previous studies might have measured tourism determinants in Sicily, but they preceded COVID-19.

  • Conceptual limitations . Previous studies are too bound to a specific ideology or a theoretical framework.

Example : The work of English novelist E. M. Forster has been extensively researched for its social, political, and aesthetic dimensions. After the 1990s, younger scholars wanted to read his novels as an example of gay fiction. They justified the need to do so based on previous studies' reliance on homophobic ideology.

This kind of rationale is most common in basic/theoretical research.

2. This study can help solve a specific problem

Here, you base your rationale on a process that has a problem or is not satisfactory.

For example, patients complain about low-quality hospital care on weekends (staff shortages, inadequate attention, etc.). No one has looked into this (there is a lack of data). So, you explore if the reported problems are true and what can be done to address them. This is a knowledge gap.

Or you set out to explore a specific practice. You might want to study the pros and cons of several entry strategies into the Japanese food market.

It's vital to explain the problem in detail and stress the practical benefits of its solution. In the first example, the practical implications are recommendations to improve healthcare provision.

In the second example, the impact of your research is to inform the decision-making of businesses wanting to enter the Japanese food market.

This kind of rationale is more common in applied/practical research.

3. You're the best person to conduct this study

It's a bonus if you can show that you're uniquely positioned to deliver this study, especially if you're writing a funding proposal .

For an anthropologist wanting to explore gender norms in Ethiopia, this could be that they speak Amharic (Ethiopia's official language) and have already lived in the country for a few years (ethnographic experience).

Or if you want to conduct an interdisciplinary research project, consider partnering up with collaborators whose expertise complements your own. Scientists from different fields might bring different skills and a fresh perspective or have access to the latest tech and equipment. Teaming up with reputable collaborators justifies the need for a study by increasing its credibility and likely impact.

When is the research rationale written?

You can write your research rationale before, or after, conducting the study.

In the first case, when you might have a new research idea, and you're applying for funding to implement it.

Or you're preparing a call for papers for a journal special issue or a conference. Here , for instance, the authors seek to collect studies on the impact of apathy on age-related neuropsychiatric disorders.

In the second case, you have completed the study and are writing a research paper for publication. Looking back, you explain why you did the study in question and how it worked out.

Although the research rationale is part of the introduction, it's best to write it at the end. Stand back from your study and look at it in the big picture. At this point, it's easier to convince your reader why your study was both necessary and important.

How long should a research rationale be?

The length of the research rationale is not fixed. Ideally, this will be determined by the guidelines (of your journal, sponsor etc.).

The prestigious journal Nature , for instance, calls for articles to be no more than 6 or 8 pages, depending on the content. The introduction should be around 200 words, and, as mentioned, two to three sentences serve as a brief account of the background and rationale of the study, and come at the end of the introduction.

If you're not provided guidelines, consider these factors:

  • Research document : In a thesis or book-length study, the research rationale will be longer than in a journal article. For example, the background and rationale of this book exploring the collective memory of World War I cover more than ten pages.
  • Research question : Research into a new sub-field may call for a longer or more detailed justification than a study that plugs a gap in literature.

Which verb tenses to use in the research rationale?

It's best to use the present tense. Though in a research proposal, the research rationale is likely written in the future tense, as you're describing the intended or expected outcomes of the research project (the gaps it will fill, the problems it will solve).

What is the Rationale of the Study?

The rationale of the study is the justification for taking on a given study. It explains the reason the study was conducted or should be conducted. This means the study rationale should explain to the reader or examiner why the study is/was necessary. It is also sometimes called the “purpose” or “justification” of a study. While this is not difficult to grasp in itself, you might wonder how the rationale of the study is different from your research question or from the statement of the problem of your study, and how it fits into the rest of your thesis or research paper. 

The rationale of the study links the background of the study to your specific research question and justifies the need for the latter on the basis of the former. In brief, you first provide and discuss existing data on the topic, and then you tell the reader, based on the background evidence you just presented, where you identified gaps or issues and why you think it is important to address those. The problem statement, lastly, is the formulation of the specific research question you choose to investigate, following logically from your rationale, and the approach you are planning to use to do that.

  • Study Rationale Example: Where Does It Go In Your Paper?

The basis for writing a research rationale is preliminary data or a clear description of an observation. If you are doing basic/theoretical research, then a literature review will help you identify gaps in current knowledge. In applied/practical research, you base your rationale on an existing issue with a certain process (e.g., vaccine proof registration) or practice (e.g., patient treatment) that is well documented and needs to be addressed. By presenting the reader with earlier evidence or observations, you can (and have to) convince them that you are not just repeating what other people have already done or said and that your ideas are not coming out of thin air. 

Once you have explained where you are coming from, you should justify the need for doing additional research–this is essentially the rationale of your study. Finally, when you have convinced the reader of the purpose of your work, you can end your introduction section with the statement of the problem of your research that contains clear aims and objectives and also briefly describes (and justifies) your methodological approach. 

When is the Rationale for Research Written?

The author can present the study rationale both before and after the research is conducted. 

  • Before conducting research : The study rationale is a central component of the research proposal . It represents the plan of your work, constructed before the study is actually executed.
  • Once research has been conducted : After the study is completed, the rationale is presented in a research article or  PhD dissertation  to explain why you focused on this specific research question. When writing the study rationale for this purpose, the author should link the rationale of the research to the aims and outcomes of the study.

What to Include in the Study Rationale

Although every study rationale is different and discusses different specific elements of a study’s method or approach, there are some elements that should be included to write a good rationale. Make sure to touch on the following:

  • A summary of conclusions from your review of the relevant literature
  • What is currently unknown (gaps in knowledge)
  • Inconclusive or contested results  from previous studies on the same or similar topic
  • The necessity to improve or build on previous research, such as to improve methodology or utilize newer techniques and/or technologies

There are different types of limitations that you can use to justify the need for your study. In applied/practical research, the justification for investigating something is always that an existing process/practice has a problem or is not satisfactory. Let’s say, for example, that people in a certain country/city/community commonly complain about hospital care on weekends (not enough staff, not enough attention, no decisions being made), but you looked into it and realized that nobody ever investigated whether these perceived problems are actually based on objective shortages/non-availabilities of care or whether the lower numbers of patients who are treated during weekends are commensurate with the provided services.

In this case, “lack of data” is your justification for digging deeper into the problem. Or, if it is obvious that there is a shortage of staff and provided services on weekends, you could decide to investigate which of the usual procedures are skipped during weekends as a result and what the negative consequences are. 

In basic/theoretical research, lack of knowledge is of course a common and accepted justification for additional research—but make sure that it is not your only motivation. “Nobody has ever done this” is only a convincing reason for a study if you explain to the reader why you think we should know more about this specific phenomenon. If there is earlier research but you think it has limitations, then those can usually be classified into “methodological”, “contextual”, and “conceptual” limitations. To identify such limitations, you can ask specific questions and let those questions guide you when you explain to the reader why your study was necessary:

Methodological limitations

  • Did earlier studies try but failed to measure/identify a specific phenomenon?
  • Was earlier research based on incorrect conceptualizations of variables?
  • Were earlier studies based on questionable operationalizations of key concepts?
  • Did earlier studies use questionable or inappropriate research designs?

Contextual limitations

  • Have recent changes in the studied problem made previous studies irrelevant?
  • Are you studying a new/particular context that previous findings do not apply to?

Conceptual limitations

  • Do previous findings only make sense within a specific framework or ideology?

Study Rationale Examples

Let’s look at an example from one of our earlier articles on the statement of the problem to clarify how your rationale fits into your introduction section. This is a very short introduction for a practical research study on the challenges of online learning. Your introduction might be much longer (especially the context/background section), and this example does not contain any sources (which you will have to provide for all claims you make and all earlier studies you cite)—but please pay attention to how the background presentation , rationale, and problem statement blend into each other in a logical way so that the reader can follow and has no reason to question your motivation or the foundation of your research.

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, most educational institutions around the world have transitioned to a fully online study model, at least during peak times of infections and social distancing measures. How to write a rationale.

What is a rationale?

A rationale is when you are asked to give the reasoning or justification for an action or a choice you make.

There is a focus on the ‘ why ’ in a rationale: why you chose to do something, study or focus on something. It is a set of statements of purpose and significance and often addresses a gap or a need.

A rationale in Australian academic writing is rarely a whole task by itself.  It is often a part of a bigger task. For example, a part of a lesson plan might be to provide a rationale for why you chose to teach particular content or use a certain resource or activity, or you may be asked to provide a rationale as to why you chose a particular theory to apply or a concept to support.

You may be called upon to provide a rationale:

prior to an action or decision; why you plan to do something and how, or

  • after you have acted or decided something; reflecting, looking back, why you did something and how it worked or not.

You can use language to signal you are clearly providing a rationale in your writing. You can link your rationale to learning outcomes or aims for a lesson, activity or assessment task.

A model: problem-solution-rationale

A rationale can be provided by offering longer essay-based support for why it is important to do something in a certain way – in that sense, a whole paper can be a rationale.

However, a more specific or focused way of thinking about a rationale is how we can overtly show we are justifying our choices with the language we use.

One way of doing this is to consider the problem or issue requiring attention, the solution and then the rationale or justification for the solution (the ‘why’). This sets the rationale (the reason) within a context.

A diagnostic assessment determined that the students required more attention to addition and subtraction of mixed fractions. This activity intends to address this problem by having the children engage with the task with blocks before it is done with figures. The reason I chose to do this is because students have higher comprehension levels when presented with visual or tangible representations of abstract problems (Benson, 2016). I also did this as I wanted to allow the children to ‘play’ with maths, to see that it can be a fun activity and in doing so, to breakdown some of the ‘anti-mathematics prejudices’ that Gaines (2017, p. 4) talks about.

The important thing here is the language used to signal the rationale , in this case:

Another problem / solution / rationale example:

Scaffolding is the support provided by the teacher or a significant other, such as a classmate, which helps students in learning (Gibbons, 2015). Some students were having difficulty with the language at entry while others, particularly those who had completed the pre-tasks, had few problems. Therefore, in order to address this disparity in level and understanding, mixed-ability pairs were created where the more competent student helped the other. On reflection, this was an effective way to run the activity for two reasons : it allowed peer-to-peer teaching which solidified both students’ understanding; and it scaffolded the support in a way that allowed me to roam the room lending advice to pairs as needed.

The key thing to remember about rationale writing is to stand back from the writing, look at it in a big picture sense and ask yourself, ‘ Have I explained why? ’ If that is clearly articulated, you have provided a rationale.

The rationale for one’s research is the justification for undertaking a given study. It states the reason(s) why a researcher chooses to focus on the topic in question, including what the significance is and what gaps the research intends to fill. In short, it is an explanation that rationalises the need for the study. The rationale is typically followed by a hypothesis/ research question (s) and the study objectives.

When is the rationale for research written?

The rationale of a study can be presented both before and after the research is conducted. 

  • Before : The rationale is a crucial part of your research proposal , representing the plan of your work as formulated before you execute your study.
  • After : Once the study is completed, the rationale is presented in a research paper or dissertation to explain why you focused on the particular question. In this instance, you would link the rationale of your research project to the study aims and outcomes.

Basis for writing the research rationale

The study rationale is predominantly based on preliminary data . A literature review will help you identify gaps in the current knowledge base and also ensure that you avoid duplicating what has already been done. Carotenoid profiling has been carried out only in a handful of microalgal species from this genus, and the search for microalgae rich in bioactive carotenoids has not yielded promising candidates so far. This in-depth examination of the carotenoid profile of Abc xyz will help identify and quantify novel and potentially useful carotenoids from an untapped aquaculture resource .

Rationale for the Study

It is important for you to be able to explain the importance of the research you are conducting by providing valid arguments. Rationale for the study, also referred to as justification for the study, is reason why you have conducted your study in the first place. This part in your paper needs to explain uniqueness and importance of your research. Rationale for the study needs to be specific and ideally, it should relate to the following points:

1. The research needs to contribute to the elimination of a gap in the literature. Elimination of gap in the present literature is one of the compulsory requirements for your study. In other words, you don’t need to ‘re-invent the wheel’ and your research aims and objectives need to focus on new topics. For example, you can choose to conduct an empirical study to assess the implications of COVID-19 pandemic on the numbers of tourists visitors in your city. This might be previously undressed topic, taking into account that COVID-19 pandemic is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Alternatively, if you cannot find a new topic to research, you can attempt to offer fresh perspectives on existing management, business or economic issues. For example, while thousands of studies have been previously conducted to study various aspects of leadership, this topic as far from being exhausted as a research area. Specifically, new studies can be conducted in the area of leadership to analyze the impacts of new communication mediums such as TikTok, and other social networking sites on leadership practices.

You can also discuss the shortcomings of previous works devoted to your research area. Shortcomings in previous studies can be divided into three groups:

a) Methodological limitations . Methodology employed in previous study may be flawed in terms of research design, research approach or sampling.

b) Contextual limitations . Relevance of previous works may be non-existent for the present because external factors have changed.

c) Conceptual limitations . Previous studies may be unjustifiably bound up to a particular model or an ideology.

While discussing the shortcomings of previous studies you should explain how you are going to correct them. This principle is true to almost all areas in business studies i.e. gaps or shortcomings in the literature can be found in relation to almost all areas of business and economics.

2. The research can be conducted to solve a specific problem. It helps if you can explain why you are the right person and in the right position to solve the problem. You have to explain the essence of the problem in a detailed manner and highlight practical benefits associated with the solution of the problem. Suppose, your dissertation topic is “a study into advantages and disadvantages of various entry strategies into Chinese market”. In this case, you can say that practical implications of your research relates to assisting businesses aiming to enter Chinese market to do more informed decision making.

Alternatively, if your research is devoted to the analysis of impacts of CSR programs and initiatives on brand image, practical contributions of your study would relate to contributing to the level of effectiveness of CSR programs of businesses.

Additional examples of studies that can assist to address specific practical problems may include the following:

  • A study into the reasons of high employee turnover at Hanson Brick
  • A critical analysis of employee motivation problems at Esporta, Finchley Road, London
  • A research into effective succession planning at Microsoft
  • A study into major differences between private and public primary education in the USA and implications of these differences on the quality of education

However, it is important to note that it is not an obligatory for a dissertation   to be associated with the solution of a specific problem. Dissertations can be purely theory-based as well. Examples of such studies include the following:

  • Born or bred: revising The Great Man theory of leadership in the 21 st century
  • A critical analysis of the relevance of McClelland’s Achievement theory to the US information technology industry
  • Neoliberalism as a major reason behind the emergence of the global financial and economic crisis of 2007-2009
  • Analysis of Lewin’s Model of Change and its relevance to pharmaceutical sector of France

3. Your study has to contribute to the level of professional development of the researcher . That is you. You have to explain in a detailed manner in what ways your research contributes to the achievement of your long-term career aspirations.

For example, you have selected a research topic of “ A critical analysis of the relevance of McClelland’s Achievement theory in the US information technology industry ”.  You may state that you associate your career aspirations with becoming an IT executive in the US, and accordingly, in-depth knowledge of employee motivation in this industry is going to contribute your chances of success in your chosen career path.

Therefore, you are in a better position if you have already identified your career objectives, so that during the research process you can get detailed knowledge about various aspects of your chosen industry.

A clear problem statement serves as the research’s foundation, outlining the specific research questions or objectives that the study seeks to address.

Let’s start by asking the most important question, “ What is a research paper? ”.

Simply put, a research paper is a scholarly written work where the writer (that’s you!) answers a specific question (this is called a research question ) through evidence-based arguments . Evidence-based is the keyword here. In other words, a research paper is different from an essay or other writing assignments that draw from the writer’s personal opinions or experiences. With a research paper, it’s all about building your arguments based on evidence (we’ll talk more about that evidence a little later).

Now, it’s worth noting that there are many different types of research papers , including analytical papers (the type I just described), argumentative papers, and interpretative papers. Here, we’ll focus on analytical papers , as these are some of the most common – but if you’re keen to learn about other types of research papers, be sure to check out the rest of the blog .

With that basic foundation laid, let’s get down to business and look at how to write a research paper .

Overview: The 3-Stage Process

While there are, of course, many potential approaches you can take to write a research paper, there are typically three stages to the writing process. So, in this tutorial, we’ll present a straightforward three-step process that we use when working with students at Grad Coach.

These three steps are:

  • Finding a research topic and reviewing the existing literature
  • Developing a provisional structure and outline for your paper, and
  • Writing up your initial draft and then refining it iteratively

Let’s dig into each of these.

Step 1: Find a topic and review the literature

As we mentioned earlier, in a research paper, you, as the researcher, will try to answer a question . More specifically, that’s called a research question , and it sets the direction of your entire paper. What’s important to understand though is that you’ll need to answer that research question with the help of high-quality sources – for example, journal articles, government reports, case studies, and so on. We’ll circle back to this in a minute.

The first stage of the research process is deciding on what your research question will be and then reviewing the existing literature (in other words, past studies and papers) to see what they say about that specific research question. In some cases, your professor may provide you with a predetermined research question (or set of questions). However, in many cases, you’ll need to find your own research question within a certain topic area.

Finding a strong research question hinges on identifying a meaningful research gap – in other words, an area that’s lacking in existing research. There’s a lot to unpack here, so if you wanna learn more, check out the plain-language explainer video below.

Once you’ve figured out which question (or questions) you’ll attempt to answer in your research paper, you’ll need to do a deep dive into the existing literature – this is called a “ literature search ”. Again, there are many ways to go about this, but your most likely starting point will be Google Scholar .

If you’re new to Google Scholar, think of it as Google for the academic world. You can start by simply entering a few different keywords that are relevant to your research question and it will then present a host of articles for you to review. What you want to pay close attention to here is the number of citations for each paper – the more citations a paper has, the more credible it is (generally speaking – there are some exceptions, of course).

Ideally, what you’re looking for are well-cited papers that are highly relevant to your topic. That said, keep in mind that citations are a cumulative metric , so older papers will often have more citations than newer papers – just because they’ve been around for longer. So, don’t fixate on this metric in isolation – relevance and recency are also very important.

Beyond Google Scholar, you’ll also definitely want to check out academic databases and aggregators such as Science Direct, PubMed, JStor and so on. These will often overlap with the results that you find in Google Scholar, but they can also reveal some hidden gems – so, be sure to check them out.

Once you’ve worked your way through all the literature, you’ll want to catalogue all this information in some sort of spreadsheet so that you can easily recall who said what, when and within what context. If you’d like, we’ve got a free literature spreadsheet that helps you do exactly that.

Don’t fixate on an article’s citation count in isolation - relevance (to your research question) and recency are also very important.

Step 2: Develop a structure and outline

With your research question pinned down and your literature digested and catalogued, it’s time to move on to planning your actual research paper .

It might sound obvious, but it’s really important to have some sort of rough outline in place before you start writing your paper. So often, we see students eagerly rushing into the writing phase, only to land up with a disjointed research paper that rambles on in multiple

Now, the secret here is to not get caught up in the fine details . Realistically, all you need at this stage is a bullet-point list that describes (in broad strokes) what you’ll discuss and in what order. It’s also useful to remember that you’re not glued to this outline – in all likelihood, you’ll chop and change some sections once you start writing, and that’s perfectly okay. What’s important is that you have some sort of roadmap in place from the start.

You need to have a rough outline in place before you start writing your paper - or you’ll end up with a disjointed research paper that rambles on.

At this stage you might be wondering, “ But how should I structure my research paper? ”. Well, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution here, but in general, a research paper will consist of a few relatively standardised components:

  • Introduction
  • Literature review
  • Methodology

Let’s take a look at each of these.

First up is the introduction section . As the name suggests, the purpose of the introduction is to set the scene for your research paper. There are usually (at least) four ingredients that go into this section – these are the background to the topic, the research problem and resultant research question , and the justification or rationale. The next section of your research paper will typically be your literature review . Remember all that literature you worked through earlier? Well, this is where you’ll present your interpretation of all that content . You’ll do this by writing about recent trends, developments, and arguments within the literature – but more specifically, those that are relevant to your research question . The literature review can oftentimes seem a little daunting, even to seasoned researchers, so be sure to check out our extensive collection of literature review content here .

With the introduction and lit review out of the way, the next section of your paper is the research methodology . In a nutshell, the methodology section should describe to your reader what you did (beyond just reviewing the existing literature) to answer your research question. For example, what data did you collect, how did you collect that data, how did you analyse that data and so on? For each choice, you’ll also need to justify why you chose to do it that way, and what the strengths and weaknesses of your approach were.

Now, it’s worth mentioning that for some research papers, this aspect of the project may be a lot simpler . For example, you may only need to draw on secondary sources (in other words, existing data sets). In some cases, you may just be asked to draw your conclusions from the literature search itself (in other words, there may be no data analysis at all). But, if you are required to collect and analyse data, you’ll need to pay a lot of attention to the methodology section. By this stage of your paper, you will have explained what your research question is, what the existing literature has to say about that question, and how you analysed additional data to try to answer your question. So, the natural next step is to present your analysis of that data . This section is usually called the “results” or “analysis” section and this is where you’ll showcase your findings.

Depending on your school’s requirements, you may need to present and interpret the data in one section – or you might split the presentation and the interpretation into two sections. In the latter case, your “results” section will just describe the data, and the “discussion” is where you’ll interpret that data and explicitly link your analysis back to your research question. If you’re not sure which approach to take, check in with your professor or take a look at past papers to see what the norms are for your programme.

Alright – once you’ve presented and discussed your results, it’s time to wrap it up . This usually takes the form of the “ conclusion ” section. In the conclusion, you’ll need to highlight the key takeaways from your study and close the loop by explicitly answering your research question. Again, the exact requirements here will vary depending on your programme (and you may not even need a conclusion section at all) – so be sure to check with your professor if you’re unsure.

Step 3: Write and refine

Finally, it’s time to get writing. All too often though, students hit a brick wall right about here… So, how do you avoid this happening to you?

Well, there’s a lot to be said when it comes to writing a research paper (or any sort of academic piece), but we’ll share three practical tips to help you get started.

First and foremost , it’s essential to approach your writing as an iterative process. In other words, you need to start with a really messy first draft and then polish it over multiple rounds of editing. Don’t waste your time trying to write a perfect research paper in one go. Instead, take the pressure off yourself by adopting an iterative approach.

Secondly , it’s important to always lean towards critical writing , rather than descriptive writing. What does this mean? Well, at the simplest level, descriptive writing focuses on the “ what ”, while critical writing digs into the “ so what ” – in other words, the implications . Last but not least, you’ll need to get your referencing right. Specifically, you’ll need to provide credible, correctly formatted citations for the statements you make. In general, quantitative studies involve “closed-ended” research verbs such as determine , measure , correlate , explain , compare , validate , identify , or examine ; whereas qualitative studies involve “open-ended” research verbs such as explore , understand , narrate , articulate [meanings], discover , or develop .

A qualitative purpose statement following the color-coded problem statement (assumed here to be low well-being among financial sector employees) + gap (lack of research on followers of mid-level managers), might start like this:

In response to declining levels of employee well-being, the purpose of the qualitative phenomenology was to explore and understand the lived experiences related to the well-being of the followers of novice mid-level managers in the financial services industry. The levels of follower well-being have been shown to correlate to employee morale, turnover intention, and customer orientation (Eren et al., 2013). A combined framework of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory and the employee well-being concept informed the research questions and supported the inquiry, analysis, and interpretation of the experiences of followers of novice managers in the financial services industry.

A quantitative purpose statement for the same problem and gap might start like this:

In response to declining levels of employee well-being, the purpose of the quantitative correlational study was to determine which leadership factors predict employee well-being of the followers of novice mid-level managers in the financial services industry. Leadership factors were measured by the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) assessment framework  by Mantlekow (2015), and employee well-being was conceptualized as a compound variable consisting of self-reported turnover-intent and psychological test scores from the Mental Health Survey (MHS) developed by Johns Hopkins University researchers.

Both of these purpose statements reflect viable research strategies and both align with the problem and gap so it’s up to the researcher to design a study in a manner that reflects personal preferences and desired study outcomes. Note that the quantitative research purpose incorporates operationalized concepts  or variables ; that reflect the way the researcher intends to measure the key concepts under study; whereas the qualitative purpose statement isn’t about translating the concepts under study as variables but instead aim to explore and understand the core research phenomenon.  

Best Practices for Writing your Purpose Statement

Always keep in mind that the dissertation process is iterative, and your writing, over time, will be refined as clarity is gradually achieved. Most of the time, greater clarity for the purpose statement and other components of the Dissertation is the result of a growing understanding of the literature in the field. As you increasingly master the literature you will also increasingly clarify the purpose of your study.

The purpose statement should flow directly from the problem statement. There should be clear and obvious alignment between the two and that alignment will get tighter and more pronounced as your work progresses.

The purpose statement should specifically address the reason for conducting the study, with emphasis on the word specifically. There should not be any doubt in your readers’ minds as to the purpose of your study. To achieve this level of clarity you will need to also insure there is no doubt in your mind as to the purpose of your study.

Many researchers benefit from stopping your work during the research process when insight strikes you and write about it while it is still fresh in your mind. This can help you clarify all aspects of a dissertation, including clarifying its purpose.

The purpose statement should reflect the research questions and vice versa. The chain of alignment that began with the research problem description and continues on to the research purpose, research questions, and methodology must be respected at all times during dissertation development. You are to succinctly describe the overarching goal of the study that reflects the research questions. Each research question narrows and focuses the purpose statement. Conversely, the purpose statement encompasses all of the research questions.

Identify in the purpose statement the research method as quantitative, qualitative or mixed (i.e., “The purpose of this [qualitative/quantitative/mixed] study is to ...)

Avoid the use of the phrase “research study” since the two words together are redundant.

Follow the initial declaration of purpose with a brief overview of how, with what instruments/data, with whom and where (as applicable) the study will be conducted. Identify variables/constructs and/or phenomenon/concept/idea. Since this section is to be a concise paragraph, emphasis must be placed on the word brief. However, adding these details will give your readers a very clear picture of the purpose of your research.

Developing the purpose section of your dissertation is usually not achieved in a single flash of insight. The process involves a great deal of reading to find out what other scholars have done to address the research topic and problem you have identified. The purpose section of your dissertation could well be the most important paragraph you write during your academic career, and every word should be carefully selected. Think of it as the DNA of your dissertation. Everything else you write should emerge directly and clearly from your purpose statement. In turn, your purpose statement should emerge directly and clearly from your research problem description. It is good practice to print out your problem statement and purpose statement and keep them in front of you as you work on each part of your dissertation in order to insure alignment.

It is helpful to collect several dissertations similar to the one you envision creating. Extract the problem descriptions and purpose statements of other dissertation authors and compare them in order to sharpen your thinking about your own work.  Comparing how other dissertation authors have handled the many challenges you are facing can be an invaluable exercise. Keep in mind that individual universities use their own tailored protocols for presenting key components of the dissertation so your review of these purpose statements should focus on content rather than form.

Once your purpose statement is set it must be consistently presented throughout the dissertation. This may require some recursive editing because the way you articulate your purpose may evolve as you work on various aspects of your dissertation. Whenever you make an adjustment to your purpose statement you should carefully follow up on the editing and conceptual ramifications throughout the entire document.

In establishing your purpose you should NOT advocate for a particular outcome. Research should be done to answer questions not prove a point. As a researcher, you are to inquire with an open mind, and even when you come to the work with clear assumptions, your job is to prove the validity of the conclusions reached. For example, you would not say the purpose of your research project is to demonstrate that there is a relationship between two variables. Such a statement presupposes you know the answer before your research is conducted and promotes or supports (advocates on behalf of) a particular outcome. A more appropriate purpose statement would be to examine or explore the relationship between two variables.

Your purpose statement should not imply that you are going to prove something. You may be surprised to learn that we cannot prove anything in scholarly research for two reasons. First, in quantitative analyses, statistical tests calculate the probability that something is true rather than establishing it as true. Second, in qualitative research, the study can only purport to describe what is occurring from the perspective of the participants. Whether or not the phenomenon they are describing is true in a larger context is not knowable. We cannot observe the phenomenon in all settings and in all circumstances.

Writing your Purpose Statement

It is important to distinguish in your mind the differences between the Problem Statement and Purpose Statement.

The Purpose Statement includes:

  • Method of Study
  • Specific Population

Remember, as you are contemplating what to include in your purpose statement and then when you are writing it, the purpose statement is a concise paragraph that describes the intent of the study, and it should flow directly from the problem statement.  It should specifically address the reason for conducting the study, and reflect the research questions.  Further, it should identify the research method as qualitative, quantitative, or mixed.  Then provide a brief overview of how the study will be conducted, with what instruments/data collection methods, and with whom (subjects) and where (as applicable). Finally, you should identify variables/constructs and/or phenomenon/concept/idea.

Qualitative Purpose Statement

Creswell (2002) suggested for writing purpose statements in qualitative research include using deliberate phrasing to alert the reader to the purpose statement. Verbs that indicate what will take place in the research and the use of non-directional language that do not suggest an outcome are key. A purpose statement should focus on a single idea or concept, with a broad definition of the idea or concept. How the concept was investigated should also be included, as well as participants in the study and locations for the research to give the reader a sense of with whom and where the study took place. 

Creswell (2003) advised the following script for purpose statements in qualitative research:

“The purpose of this qualitative_________________ (strategy of inquiry, such as ethnography, case study, or other type) study is (was? will be?) to ________________ (understand? describe? develop? discover?) the _________________(central phenomenon being studied) for ______________ (the participants, such as the individual, groups, organization) at __________(research site). At this stage in the research, the __________ (central phenomenon being studied) will be generally defined as ___________________ (provide a general definition)” (pg. 90).

Quantitative Purpose Statement

Creswell (2003) offers vast differences between the purpose statements written for qualitative research and those written for quantitative research, particularly with respect to language and the inclusion of variables. The comparison of variables is often a focus of quantitative research, with the variables distinguishable by either the temporal order or how they are measured. As with qualitative research purpose statements, Creswell (2003) recommends the use of deliberate language to alert the reader to the purpose of the study, but quantitative purpose statements also include the theory or conceptual framework guiding the study and the variables that are being studied and how they are related. 

Creswell (2003) suggests the following script for drafting purpose statements in quantitative research:

“The purpose of this _____________________ (experiment? survey?) study is (was? will be?) to test the theory of _________________that _________________ (compares? relates?) the ___________(independent variable) to _________________________(dependent variable), controlling for _______________________ (control variables) for ___________________ (participants) at _________________________ (the research site). The independent variable(s) _____________________ will be generally defined as _______________________ (provide a general definition). The dependent variable(s) will be generally defined as _____________________ (provide a general definition), and the control and intervening variables(s), _________________ (identify the control and intervening variables) will be statistically controlled in this study” (pg. 97).

Sample Purpose Statements

  • The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how participation in service-learning in an alternative school impacted students academically, civically, and personally.  There is ample evidence demonstrating the failure of schools for students at-risk; however, there is still a need to demonstrate why these students are successful in non-traditional educational programs like the service-learning model used at TDS.  This study was unique in that it examined one alternative school’s approach to service-learning in a setting where students not only serve, but faculty serve as volunteer teachers.  The use of a constructivist approach in service-learning in an alternative school setting was examined in an effort to determine whether service-learning participation contributes positively to academic, personal, and civic gain for students, and to examine student and teacher views regarding the overall outcomes of service-learning.  This study was completed using an ethnographic approach that included observations, content analysis, and interviews with teachers at The David School.
  • The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental cross-sectional linear multiple regression design was to investigate the relationship among early childhood teachers’ self-reported assessment of multicultural awareness as measured by responses from the Teacher Multicultural Attitude Survey (TMAS) and supervisors’ observed assessment of teachers’ multicultural competency skills as measured by the Multicultural Teaching Competency Scale (MTCS) survey. Demographic data such as number of multicultural training hours, years teaching in Dubai, curriculum program at current school, and age were also examined and their relationship to multicultural teaching competency. The study took place in the emirate of Dubai where there were 14,333 expatriate teachers employed in private schools (KHDA, 2013b).
  • The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental study is to examine the degree to which stages of change, gender, acculturation level and trauma types predicts the reluctance of Arab refugees, aged 18 and over, in the Dearborn, MI area, to seek professional help for their mental health needs. This study will utilize four instruments to measure these variables: University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA: DiClemente & Hughes, 1990); Cumulative Trauma Scale (Kira, 2012); Acculturation Rating Scale for Arabic Americans-II Arabic and English (ARSAA-IIA, ARSAA-IIE: Jadalla & Lee, 2013), and a demographic survey. This study will examine 1) the relationship between stages of change, gender, acculturation levels, and trauma types and Arab refugees’ help-seeking behavior, 2) the degree to which any of these variables can predict Arab refugee help-seeking behavior.  Additionally, the outcome of this study could provide researchers and clinicians with a stage-based model, TTM, for measuring Arab refugees’ help-seeking behavior and lay a foundation for how TTM can help target the clinical needs of Arab refugees. Lastly, this attempt to apply the TTM model to Arab refugees’ condition could lay the foundation for future research to investigate the application of TTM to clinical work among refugee populations.
  • The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study is to describe the lived experiences of LLM for 10 EFL learners in rural Guatemala and to utilize that data to determine how it conforms to, or possibly challenges, current theoretical conceptions of LLM. In accordance with Morse’s (1994) suggestion that a phenomenological study should utilize at least six participants, this study utilized semi-structured interviews with 10 EFL learners to explore why and how they have experienced the motivation to learn English throughout their lives. The methodology of horizontalization was used to break the interview protocols into individual units of meaning before analyzing these units to extract the overarching themes (Moustakas, 1994). These themes were then interpreted into a detailed description of LLM as experienced by EFL students in this context. Finally, the resulting description was analyzed to discover how these learners’ lived experiences with LLM conformed with and/or diverged from current theories of LLM.
  • The purpose of this qualitative, embedded, multiple case study was to examine how both parent-child attachment relationships are impacted by the quality of the paternal and maternal caregiver-child interactions that occur throughout a maternal deployment, within the context of dual-military couples. In order to examine this phenomenon, an embedded, multiple case study was conducted, utilizing an attachment systems metatheory perspective. The study included four dual-military couples who experienced a maternal deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) when they had at least one child between 8 weeks-old to 5 years-old.  Each member of the couple participated in an individual, semi-structured interview with the researcher and completed the Parenting Relationship Questionnaire (PRQ). “The PRQ is designed to capture a parent’s perspective on the parent-child relationship” (Pearson, 2012, para. 1) and was used within the proposed study for this purpose. The PRQ was utilized to triangulate the data (Bekhet & Zauszniewski, 2012) as well as to provide some additional information on the parents’ perspective of the quality of the parent-child attachment relationship in regards to communication, discipline, parenting confidence, relationship satisfaction, and time spent together (Pearson, 2012). The researcher utilized the semi-structured interview to collect information regarding the parents' perspectives of the quality of their parental caregiver behaviors during the deployment cycle, the mother's parent-child interactions while deployed, the behavior of the child or children at time of reunification, and the strategies or behaviors the parents believe may have contributed to their child's behavior at the time of reunification. The results of this study may be utilized by the military, and by civilian providers, to develop proactive and preventive measures that both providers and parents can implement, to address any potential adverse effects on the parent-child attachment relationship, identified through the proposed study. The results of this study may also be utilized to further refine and understand the integration of attachment theory and systems theory, in both clinical and research settings, within the field of marriage and family therapy.

Importance of Broadening the Research Topic

It is important to adopt a flexible approach when choosing a topic to investigate. The goal when writing any paper is to choose a research problem that is focused and time-limited. However, your starting point should not be so narrowly defined that you unnecessarily constrict your opportunity to investigate the topic thoroughly. A research problem that is too narrowly defined leads to any of the following problems :

  • You can't find enough information and what you do find is tangential or irrelevant.
  • You find information that is so specific that it can't lead to any significant conclusions.
  • Your sources cover so few ideas that you can't expand them into a significant paper.
  • The research problem is so case specific that it limits opportunities to generalize or apply the results to other contexts.
  • The significance of the research problem is limited to only a very small, unique population.

Strategies for Broadening the Research Topic

In general, an indication that a research problem is too narrowly defined is that you can't find any relevant or meaningful information about it. If this happens, don't immediately abandon your efforts to investigate the problem because it could very well be an excellent topic of study. A good way to begin is to look for parallels and opportunities for broader associations that apply to the initial research problem. A strategy for doing this is to ask yourself the basic six questions of who, what, where, when, how, and why.

Here is an example of how to apply the six questions strategy to broadening your topic. Let's use the research topic of how to investigate ways to improve trade relations between Peru and Bolivia as an example. Ask yourself:

  • Who? -- are there other countries involved in the relations between these two countries that might want to challenge or encourage this relationship? Are there particular individuals or special interest groups [e.g., politicians, union leaders, etc.] promoting trade relations or trying to inhibit it? [remember to ask either the individual who question, the collective who question, or the institutional who question].
  • What? -- what are the specific trading commodities you are examining? Are there commodities not currently traded between Peru and Bolivia that could be? What commodities are being traded but should be traded in greater volume? What barriers exist that may help or hinder the import-exports of specific commodities?
  • Where? -- where are examples of other bi-lateral trade agreements that could model the potential for closer trade relations between Peru and Bolivia? Where are the benefits most likely to be felt within each country? Note that the question of where can also relate to specific spatial and geographical issues, such as, are there any areas impeding transportation of goods in the region?
  • When? -- how long have these countries had or not had trade relations? How far into the future might a trade relationship last given other factors? The question of when can apply to either past issues or future areas of interest.
  • How? -- how might Peru and Bolivia forge these ties in relation to, for example, long-standing internal conflicts within each country? Note that the how question can also be framed as, "In what way might...." [e.g., In what way might improved trade relations lead to other forms of economic exchanges between the two countries?].
  • Why? -- what advantages can each country gain by pursuing active trade relations? Why might other countries be concerned about closer ties between these two countries? Asking why can illuminate the " So What? " question applied to your topic and, thus, provide a means of assessing significance.

Reflecting upon these six questions during your initial review of the literature can help you formulate ways to expand the parameters of your initial research problem, providing an opportunity to identify new avenues of investigation and centering your study around gaps in the literature when answers to questions cannot be found. Once you've identified additional directions in which to proceed with your topic, you can try narrowing it down again, if needed.

NOTE:   Do not determine on your own that a research problem is too narrowly defined . Always consult with a librarian before making this assumption because librarians are experts in finding information and interpreting it in relation to a research problem. As such, they can help guide you to undiscovered research or suggest ways to design a broader analysis of your research problem using resources you did not even know existed.

1. introduction.

The aim of this paper is to examine how food manufacturing companies in the UK are responding to the environmental impacts of their business activities and the demands of their various stakeholders for a more sustainable industrial sector. Whether these companies are indeed beginning the transition toward more ecocentric forms of industrial organization is explored through an analysis of the environmental and industrial strategies they have adopted through the analysis of the data pertaining to these issues collected from a discriminant analysis of two surveys of a range of food manufacturing companies. The criticisms of the academic literature on the environment and business pointing toward its narrow and biased focus are addressed within the context of a study of the food sector. The findings for the UK food sector are compared and contrasted with equivalent research undertaken in Denmark in the paper. James Collison and Mairi Maclean begin the critical discussion in the literature on business and the environment by initially deconstructing the debate and the implicitly espoused assumptions inherent within it. From their exposition, it is clear that the extant literature is heavily weighted toward the exploration of the potential of businesses to seize competitive advantage through their proactive strategic engagement with ecological issues and the broader environmental movement using the Earth as a metaphor for markets reactive strategic response to the demands of external stakeholders to improve their businesses' environmental impacts. However, a more radical ecocentric perspective presents a very different and broader set of criteria against which the relationship between business and society should be judged.

1.1. Background and Rationale

During the past few decades, increasing concerns about environmental protection and sustainability have become important issues around the world. The food industry, in particular, comes under considerable scrutiny from pressure groups and is one of the largest contributors to a number of environmental problems. In addition to serious environmental problems, companies can suffer economic losses through poor environmental practices. However, it is important to note that most of the public companies are environmentally conscious, a factor that links good environmental practices with good financial performance. Consequently, numerous surveys have sought to prove if sound environmental practices might enhance market value and thus shareholder wealth. But surprisingly, few articles focus specifically on UK food manufacturing, an important industry that experiences numerous environmental problems. The emphasis of this paper is twofold. First, it seeks to investigate the environmental activities, structures, strategies, and performance of a selected sample of UK food manufacturing companies. Second, it investigates whether corporate financial performance has been affected by these variables. As such, this study contributes to the literature by focusing on a sample of UK food manufacturing companies, an industry sector that experiences the issue of important environmental problems. These sectors emit large quantities of pollutants, consume large amounts of resources, and generate large amounts of solid waste materials. But after the investigation of the available literature, we have found surprisingly few studies within this sector.

1.2. Research Objectives and Scope

This paper uses a series of analyses to look at how businesses work. A food sector is chosen as a signal of one of the key British economic success stories: over the last ten years, it has weathered several price wars without, on average, a significant reduction in operating margins. Two factors have combined to produce long-term success. The first factor is an industry in a strong balanced shape; secondly, it is tightly governed and managed by a relatively few key players. Their powerful grip over the distribution chain is a clear business barrier to entry. Inputs to production are fairly fixed by current movement sizes so successful ownership stays in the hands of just the few. Another channel for analysis starts by examining European Union policy and practice in developing a local region through encouraging diverse farming. Specialist shops and local marketing are therefore now considered more important and are valued as value-adding results of civilizing society. Their success encourages a disproportionate level of R and D funding for the overall processed food product. Successful outcomes are rewarded by increased prices and, perhaps, protected trade blocks. For some organizations, this evaluation does no more than exert their take it or leave it powers in the value claim. Nor does the cat seem terribly concerned that other organizations are looking at adding it to their mix. Every process with food, including packaging, now has stakeholders from the environment through agriculture, manufacture, distribution, transfer, and sale and onto final use and disuse. However, few seem to pay much attention to the absolute positioning of the dot that represents the function value addressing the needs and ideals required to perform there the perform task. Only a few of these stakeholders are given a breath by another of these stakeholders. Organization success, considering the information system as a meta-stakeholder, and the commercial organization are appraised side-by-side within the marketplace. Organizations can metamorphose and assemble for one time and may now follow within the right facilitated radar profiles. Transient organizations only appeal some and have no consequences for their legacy value. Transboundary stakeholder passions are considered. The art lies in distinguishing between values of the signal generator and the receiver. Companies coordinate, through practical business operations, to deal with customer resources.

2. Literature Review

According to the 1978 Companies Act, the social and environmental responsibilities of a firm are as important as its economic responsibilities. The environment has been analyzed in four ways by previous researchers. Some researchers looked at environmental policy in general, while others evaluated specific environmental policy areas. To date, little research has been done on the food manufacturing sector; this paper will establish a benchmark for the industry. Hamilton argued that the primary motivation of private interest lies in short-term profit maximization. Other researchers have challenged this belief and suggested that voluntary policy statements may be used as an indicator of a firm's attitude toward a number of social issues. A direct link between organizational performance and environmental concern has not been proven. It is therefore difficult to assess the correlation between economic performance and environmental spending. Although there is a general belief that improved environmental performance will benefit society and harm an individual company, the required information to substantiate this theory is lacking. It has been suggested that government intervention may be required, but pressure groups and increasing public awareness may force corporations to take environmental issues more seriously. Societal, legal, and economic stakeholders have given companies an incentive to act in a socially responsible manner. Firms are becoming cognizant that their duty is to satisfy not just the single group of shareholders, but all groups which have a 'stake' in the company.

2.1. Environmental Regulations in the UK Food Industry

There is an increasing tendency in the UK food manufacturing industry in adopting proactive strategies. A range of environmental practices contained in the environmental regulation is deemed particularly important for improving the environmental performance of companies and was evaluated. Companies can be classified into either food manufacturing or non-food manufacturing groups depending on the definitions in the SIC99. For the purposes of this study, only the food-producing sector, as defined by the Department of Trade and Industry, is considered, which includes the processing of agro food products. All companies in the UK that exceed the defined employee threshold must produce a Business Review, which is part of the company's Directors Report. The review details the company's main activities, relationships with other companies in the group, policy on social, environmental and employment matters, and its future prospects. Previous literature states that the UK Business Review provides a valuable weighting to examine the underlying issues of companies' proactive environmental activities. Given the importance of the Business Review both to the definition of companies' proactive environmental activities and to the values they wish to display, companies usually produce a specific section within the Business Review, illustrating the special attention paid to this issue. Four independent variables in the study are selected based on the Business Review and relevant existing studies. Active groups of environmental management and environmental strategies are predicted positively by a range of forces and constraints, including company size, company financial performance, level of management intentions, and compliance pressure.

2.2. Industrial Analysis of the UK Food Manufacturing Sector

Food manufacturing is the single largest industrial sector in the UK, representing over a third of manufacturing output. The industrial analysis of the UK food manufacturing sector starts from the aggregate profitability of the industry, seeking to relate this to the business cycle and the Food and Drink Federation manufacturers' supply equation. Productivity measurement, cost curves, and returns to scale reveal the structure of firms within the industry, progressively narrowing their number. A relative focus begins with segmentation according to size and compares small firms with the largest food manufacturing companies in the UK. In answering the questions about 'growth, innovation, and industrial organization', appropriate indicators of success are identified in terms of current economic profitability, long-term productivity, and job satisfaction. But if these are the relevant criterion variables for analysis, there is an important need for level playing fields, with regard to distortions between different industrial sectors, and distinctive food industry assumptions about risk, uncertainty, and time. Profitability is undoubtedly the necessary condition for success in a market economy, and returns on equity and assets have consistently been lower in the UK food manufacturing sector than in the rest of the manufacturing sector. Throughout the period from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s, the proportion of profit sinks that encountered consistent losses over longer periods has been larger. This is a consistent finding in both macroeconomic and microeconomic studies. Large and small firms within the food manufacturing sector repeatedly had lower rates of return, and though average profit figures fell across the whole of the UK industry during the three decades, the relative attractiveness of success as an objective for firms within the food manufacturing sector did not improve. Is the profitability of the largest firms in the UK food and drink industry so poor that the area will not attract the investment and entrepreneurial talent which flows into competitors such as electrical engineering, the breweries, or software publishing? Should the objective of commercial, and perhaps public policy, action be downsizing and market adjustment?

3. Methodology

The subject of this study is the financial performance of UK food industry sectors. Data for the study was taken from the Stock Exchange Review. The scope of the study is constrained to the use of publicly available financial data for UK-based food industry sectors chosen in the time period before the foot and mouth outbreak in the first quarter of 2001. Thus, the scope of the research question is the identification of how financial performance is linked to environmental performance among a nonrandom sample of companies drawn from the top 340 organizations listed on the London Stock Exchange. This involves the process of determining strategies adopted by the selected companies to manage the challenge of becoming more economically efficient and sustainable in an ever-changing and turbulent marketplace. Thus, different strategies can have different impacts on company performance. By comparing profit ratio data and trends over time, the research addresses criticism of normative theory by Nielson, and it offers the opportunity to see how practical application is implemented. A sample of UK food manufacturing companies was chosen as the subject of the study because it is a worldwide leading economic sector and, historically, companies in the food and alcoholic beverages sector have generated high levels of profit for the stakeholders. Use of publicly available records has the advantage of facilitating replication of the study by using confirmatory samples. The scope of the study is constrained to the use of sector data for UK food and drink companies selected in the first quarter of 1998, 1999, 2000 — and after the foot and mouth outbreak — in 2002.

3.1. Research Design

Research data were collected through a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire designed for this research was based on previous models from corporate environmental studies. The questionnaire itself was refined by a thorough study of the literature and a pilot study conducted with a local food manufacturing company. Clarification of each question was also obtained during the interviews. The study was divided into two parts with different contents being sent to different respondents. The first part was sent to the environmental department, including managers, supervisors, or engineers. The second part was distributed to the management personnel, including general managers, finance and marketing managers, or purchasing officers. To increase the response rate, the manager was asked to inform the senior management of the purpose and methodology of the research. Covering letters were sent with the questionnaires, and the respondents were supplied with a stamped and addressed envelope. A battery of tests common in the descriptive statistical examination of questionnaire distribution was subsequently performed. The statistics derived from the tests were used to assess the reliability and accuracy of the comparisons to be made. Following the method utilized by previous researchers and consulting the literature, the internal validity of the response was investigated, with the aid of Cronbach's alpha test before sorting the database for categoric comparison. The need for improving the design of the study in question warranted an allocation for the demand for a more detailed examination of the current levels of environmental performance as perceived by the business managers. The questionnaires submitted to the response group were therefore tested to ensure they conformed to the alpha standard, improve understanding through lowering the errors based on measurement. After successfully establishing the reliability of the data, further correlations were identified. Establishment of correlations (bivariate analysis) of environmental business efforts using both dependent and independent variables allowed the research study to progress further.

3.2. Data Collection and Analysis

Before embarking on the empirical analysis and verification of the propositions, the key methods and data collection processes are discussed in this section and are followed by a brief exposition of the data analysis approach. We conducted interviews of UK FTSE 100 and FTSE 350 listed companies on their environment- and society-related factors reported in terms of official documents and available on their company websites. In terms of environmental law, the EU and UK have already identified some important environmental issues affecting companies and introduced legislation, which in turn has resulted in company regulation, reporting, and exploration through interviews that were conducted in 2004/2005. Topics covered during the interviews incorporated questions on the availability of environmental policies, significant environmental issues, environmental costs, environmental performances, and corporate social responsibility and were company- and industry-specific. Interviews allowed collections of qualitative data with which to interpret the quality of corporate governance as a result of regulation and corporate response to regulation, providing additional and possibly new response effects. Interview questions were divided into two separate groups—the environment group and the social group—to help interviewees focus on the subject of the questions. For the purpose of this paper’s focus group, the environmental questions only are listed (see Appendix B1). The overall response rate was quite high, i.e., 77% for the FTSE 100 group of largest UK companies. Furthermore, the interview requests were channeled through departments who typically would have responsibility for these disclosure areas. Responses from plant facilities managers, environment managers, finance directors, and corporate affairs managers (with multi-responses) were obtained, aggregated in interview groups composed of environmental and social policy and practice issues. The roles of the respondents that were recorded during the interviews are found in the appendix. Due to the response bias investigated, the data were deemed acceptable for use in hypothesis testing.

4. Environmental Analysis

The current study took a more generalized approach in this regard, in a first-ever comprehensive assessment of environmental disclosures among UK food manufacturing companies. As a basis, the researchers created a disclosure index using environmental disclosure guidelines from the Business Roundtable. These guidelines are considered more appropriate because they were the first to be created for companies generally, with no specific sectoral focus. In Building Public Trust, Price Waterhouse was among the first to categorize companies' environmental, social, and ethical reporting under the title "general ethos disclosure". Here, the author updated that work with scrutiny of the published separately available reports of FTSE 350 companies. The total number of companies having "general ethos disclosures" was 292, the highest score at eleven companies, with three companies revealing no such information. The research demonstrated that corporate responsibility, primarily through forte and visibility, affects the suppliers and/or customer behaviors more than the upward pressure placed otherwise.

4.1. Key Environmental Issues in the UK Food Manufacturing Industry

While policy drivers, such as the EU Environmental Policy, and voluntary industry initiatives, such as the food industry defined "responsibility deal" signed by a number of large manufacturers and retailers, appear to be having some success in reducing environmental emissions, rising global population levels and economic growth are expected to significantly increase environmental pressures. What are the specific environmental issues that drive policy and influence corporate behavior among food manufacturers? The main impacts of the UK food manufacturing sector are in terms of emissions to air. The major pollutants include ammonia, nitrous oxides, volatile organic carbon, COD, biochemical oxygen demand, particulates and dust. These emissions are generated from the manufacture of a wide range of food products, particularly in the meat (chicken, red meat, and turkey), dairy, starch and sugar (via beet production) and beverage products. Other important commodity groups include prepared meals, bakery products, food oils and fats, and other food products. The emissions arise throughout the supply chain, with the major sources being the use of fertilizer on the input side, manufacturing processes (combustion and abattoirs) and packaging on the output side.

4.2. Case Studies of Sustainable Practices

The industrial case studies have illustrated that many UK food manufacturers have established sophisticated systems for energy, water, and recycling management. Generally, this remains so despite long-term physical and financial limitations. Case studies from the industrial sector presented in this article are designed to stress the more positive aspects of the sustainable firm. It has been demonstrated that environmental/societal consideration should ideally be integrated into the firm’s overall strategic planning process. By framing outcomes in these norms, successful management becomes easier, more profitable, and less risky. The industrial recognition of these relatively simple sustainable measures is significant for several reasons. Firstly, the physical constraints on industrial improvement in floor area, waste production, energy, and water consumption were accentuated by legislative and other processes in the UK. However, this laggard behavior masks the fact that many food firms have sustainably managed these constraints for many years – in particular, managing water like most heavy water-based industry does almost by definition. So, starting from this position, not only can sustainable operations be profitable and risk-averse in their own terms, the sell-off of some energy, special snack and biscuit factories in 2000 (discussed earlier) demonstrated that they were also economically more secure than the business as a whole. Secondly, it has been demonstrated that environmental considerations should be integrated into the firm’s overall strategic thinking and planning process, linking schematic environmental firms in the narrow and broader senses. They could potentially operate effectively in economic and industrial environments (primarily as they pose new challenge to management) assuming that such attitudes and strategies are matched by the wider society in which the firms operate. It is now appreciated more widely that business as usual is not a long-term commercial option. This highlights the need for managers of environmentally sensitive firms to be more pro-active in gaining control of sustainability goals or to learn from paths already walked by other firms, as energy savings and other environmental goals already intimated must be considered in micro and macro-economic context. This suggests a need for a business and social document to form part of strategic environmental and product development alternatives.

5. Industrial Analysis

The main economic purpose of the UK food manufacturing industries is to transform primary agricultural commodities into a form more suitable for consumption and to supply these processed food outputs to other industries. The 2009 data reveal considerable changes in the food processing industries recently, with a wide range of firm size and levels of competition. This industrial analysis identifies that the UK food and drink manufacturing sector is still the most significant processing industry, largest manufacturing employer, and a major part of the UK gross domestic product (GDP). These processed food outputs have quality, safety, and price characteristic dimensions. The demand for these food products is influenced by both the upstream agricultural supply characteristics and by the downstream retail distribution system. In this paper, we propose that this focused economic approach is also particularly well-suited to the study of overall industry supply chains. The remainder of this paper thus uses this characteristic-based approach to further consider more formally the industrial organizational characteristics of the food and drink manufacturing industry. This is through the examination of the number and distribution of food and drink manufacturing companies, and the scale of their production activities. Indeed, it challenges another tenet of the alleged horizontal concentration effects, namely the greater distribution costs associated with larger units of production. By concentrating upon the distribution of food processing activities across the UK, the paper also challenges another tenet of the agglomeration economies hypothesis. This, in turn, implies that both rural development policies and agricultural producer cooperative control strategies, predicated upon the existence of closely located food manufacturing companies, may have implicit limitations.

5.1. Market Structure and Competition in the UK Food Manufacturing Sector

The food manufacturing sector has been through significant restructuring over the last 20 years. What were previously state industries operating under protection are now companies that produce food under the disciplines of customer preference, marketing power, and relative manufacturing costs. The UK food manufacturing sector is in competition with food suppliers from an increasing range of countries, both within and outside Europe. It is a sector that is responding to rising consumer incomes, changing tastes, and rapidly changing technologies. It is also responding to changing structures at both ends of the market. Large food retailers are replacing traditional shops on the one hand, and large and complex consumers are replacing traditional households on the other. The retailer is obviously a crucial influence on what food manufacturers make, how they make it, and what they charge the consumer for it. Large food retailers, offering an extensive range of food products, are squeezing out the smaller shops. This has led to the decline of the traditional shops in inner-city areas and district shopping centres. Food retailing is now largely the business of the large stores, hypermarkets, supermarkets, and the relatively small number of competitors within those sectors. For all but the largest food manufacturers, interaction is with the retail trade, through their buying departments. Increasingly, the retail sector is demanding more and more backup from its suppliers in setting the terms of the trading business and ensuring that retail policy becomes consumption reality. Food manufacturers and suppliers are focused on meeting this demand. The pressure has led to a series of vertical, horizontal, and system realignments among producers, involving mergers and acquisitions, alliances, partnerships, and changes in company focus or culture. They take place with an eye on relative efficiency and the creation of relatively short lines of communication, using few and powerful buyer/seller relationships. There have been wider effects. In the food marketing chain, many of the multinational food retailers and manufacturers are already among the biggest industrial companies in the world today. If their energy and financial services activities are taken into account, their influence extends even further. Large international food manufacturers also extend into retailing, but most have constructed an intricate network of intermediate trading and service interests.

5.2. Technological Innovations and Trends

There is still limited evidence on the extent to which the UK food and drink manufacturing sector is engaging in product and process innovation that either contributes to reducing environmental impacts or seeks to capitalize on consumer demand for more sustainable products. This chapter provides a brief review of national and international trends, with some detailed UK evidence on green product design to illustrate a typical response by companies to the environmental challenges facing the sector. Companies operating in the sector both cause and experience significant environmental impacts. As a result, they are under increasing pressure to operate in an environmentally friendly way and also to develop environmentally sustainable products. There are a number of generic environmental problems associated with food production and processing, which means that food is invariably linked when society debates its wider environmental issues. There are three key technological trends that are relevant: research, development, and innovation, which should be iterative and have an emphasis on near-market activities; research, development, and the innovation linked to regulatory enforcement and setting standards; research, development, and innovation geared toward emerging public concerns. Such multiple drivers indicate that rewards might be made from R&D expenditure, especially in areas like functional foods, organic production, and certification, as well as in environmental technologies. Much of the public's demand for clean products is unseen, and there is limited consumer action, but the responses of some companies have been the development of more environmentally friendly equipment and processes, eco-certification, promotion of traceable and safe products, and the development of functional and health-oriented foods.
