Book reports remain a key educational assessment tool from elementary school through college. Sitting down to close read and critique texts for their content and form is a lifelong skill, one that benefits all of us well beyond our school years. With the help of this guide, you’ll develop your reading comprehension and note-taking skills. You’ll also find resources to guide you through the process of writing a book report, step-by-step, from choosing a book and reading actively to revising your work. Resources for teachers are also included, from creative assignment ideas to sample rubrics.

Book reports follow general rules for composition, yet are distinct from other types of writing assignments. Central to book reports are plot summaries, analyses of characters and themes, and concluding opinions. This format differs from an argumentative essay or critical research paper, in which impartiality and objectivity is encouraged. Differences also exist between book reports and book reviews, who do not share the same intent and audience. Here, you’ll learn the basics of what a book report is and is not.

Conclusions to any type of paper are notoriously tricky to write. Here, you’ll learn some creative ways to tie up loose ends in your report and express your own opinion of the book you read. This open space for sharing opinions that are not grounded in critical research is an element that often distinguishes book reports from other types of writing.

Writing, self-publishing, book marketing, making a living with your writing

Choose The Right Categories And Keywords for Your Book

You might not want to put your book in a box or a genre or a category, but you have to, because that's how a lot of readers find their next book.

Many authors resist this categorization, and it is difficult when you first start out, but it's a fundamental of book marketing, so you need to understand and use it for your book. I know words like metadata, keywords, search engine optimization and algorithms can blow people's minds, but this side of things is an important part of being an indie author!

book report keywords

This is an excerpt from How to Market a Book Third Edition , available in ebook, print and audiobook formats.

Choose the right category

The category or genre reader has expectations, and if you don't meet them, they will be disappointed, and you'll get bad reviews.

That's not to say that you need to follow any specific rules while you're writing, but when you publish the book, you will have to choose which categories to use, and they need to be meaningful. If you have a publisher, they will do this for you, but it's best to discuss it with them anyway.

It's important to match reader expectations and the promise of what your book delivers with what your book is actually about. There is no point having a book with a swirly, girly pink chic-lit cover in the horror category. It won't sell, however good it is.

If you can, choose a category that fits your book and is easier to rank in. You get between two and ten categories, depending on the platform you're publishing to.

On Amazon, you can also get into extra categories through using your keywords to target Browse Categories. You can find a list at TheCreativePenn.com/browse . You can also email the help team through Author.Amazon.com and ask for your book to be moved to categories if they are not selectable.

If you're struggling with deciding on your categories, go back to your list of comparison authors and books .

Check what categories they are in and then spend some time looking at whether your book fits there or what the other options could be.

You could also go through this useful tutorial from Dave Chesson at Publisher Rocket on how to choose categories .

This can be time-consuming to do manually and personally, I'd rather spend my time researching obscure artifacts in dusty museums, writing more books, or just getting on with life. Perhaps you feel that way too!

I suspect this is all too common in the indie author community right now, because we want to use data, but we aren't too keen on the process for getting it or working out how to use it.

So if you'd rather use a tool to help you, check out Publisher Rocket , which is also useful for keywords.

Publisher Rocket

I also recommend K-lytics , which has some fantastic reasonably priced genre reports that go into the best target sub-categories to use as well as recommendations for comparison authors, keywords and more.

Alex, who runs K-lytics, is an absolute data geek and he spends his time combing the Amazon US rankings and categories for insights that will help. He loves this stuff – so you don't have to! Check out the reports at TheCreativePenn.com/genre

Choosing the right keywords

Keywords and search engine optimization have been considered important for a long time in the online world, particularly for ranking on the first few pages of the search engines so that people can find you.

But these principles are also important for your book page on the retail stores . They make up a critical part of the metadata that is crucial in the discoverability of your book. I also realize this might sound like gobbledegook, so I will explain further using the example of my non-fiction book, and also my novels, because keywords are just as important for fiction authors .

What is a keyword?

A keyword is a word or phrase that is associated with your book. It's based on the words that people use to search online, and this is a crucial aspect, because often the language you use is not the language that your customers might use. For example, many of us use the terms ‘indie author' or ‘indie publishing,' but a new author who is not yet in the tribe would only recognize ‘publishing' or ‘self-publishing.’

Importantly, a keyword is not just one word , and that is critical to remember as you go through the following process. For example, my thriller novel Ark of Blood is associated with the keyword “ark of the covenant” and my non-fiction book with “career change.”

So, how do you come up with keywords for your book and how do you use them?

(1) Check the Browse Category lists for keywords that will get you into categories

For example, ‘conspiracy thriller' can be used in the keyword section to get into that sub-category on the Amazon store, even though you can't select it in the KDP area for categories.

You can find a list of these at TheCreativePenn.com/browse

(2) Generate words and phrases to use as keywords

Amazon is a search engine for people who want to buy things, including your book! It has an auto-populate tool that enables you to see a drop-down of specific words or phrases. Just start typing something into the search bar, and you'll get a drop-down. Make sure that you're in the Books/Kindle store if you want to narrow the search down.

Try it now. Go to Amazon and start typing a word or phrase you want to check into the search bar. For example, I typed in ‘career c' and it came up with all kinds of phrases that started that way: career coaching books, career catapult, career code, career change, career counseling, and others. This can help you with more than just keywords for your existing book. It can also help you come up with ideas for new topics, particularly with non-fiction.

Make a list of all the words and phrases that are associated with your book. For fiction, that might include themes, places, things and anything concrete that you can hang your book off.

For Ark of Blood , that might include ark of the covenant, Israel, Jerusalem, freemasons – as those are some themes and places in the book, so people searching for those things might be interested in it.

For my non-fiction book, Career Change , I used career change, what should I do with my life, career help, hate my job, career match, career books, choosing a career.

Try to be as specific as possible in order to find your correct target audience. For example, the word ‘pain' could relate to back pain, pain of grief, pain of divorce, and many more options, so use keyword phrases where possible .

You can also use various tools to help you generate possible keyword options (which you can also use for marketing). KDP Rocket will help you analyze categories and keyword ideas in real-time and has specific options for Amazon Ads. Check it out at TheCreativePenn.com/rocket

There's also a useful tutorial on how to choose keywords.

Google has a Keyword Search Tool that you can use to discover what search terms people are using and what are the most popular at adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner . It is primarily used for people working on advertising terms, so you do need to create an ad account, although you don't need to spend any money to use the tool. You can also use tools like KeywordTool.io, and other options appear all the time.

(3) Add the keywords into your book metadata

Once you have a list of keywords, you can use these in your book metadata, the fields that the publishing sites use to categorize your book.

You can also use keywords in your book title, sub-title and in your book description and editorial reviews area. It's important to note that your cover must include the title that you use, so you can't just stuff it full of keywords. Your text should be human-focused first.

Non-fiction authors can use this type of research to make a decision on their book title or, at least, their sub-title. There's no point in your title meaning something to you but nothing to anyone else. Too often, authors will decide on a title that has emotional resonance for them, but they would be better off using specific keywords that will help customers find them more easily.

How a keyword change in my book title boosted sales 10x

I wrote my first non-fiction book as a labor of love and the book of my heart. I spent 13 years as a miserable business consultant, a cubicle slave like so many others. In 2006, I embarked on a journey to find work I could be passionate about because I felt like I was wasting my life. In 2008, I published the result of that journey in How to Enjoy Your Job … or Get a New One .

Yes, seriously. That was my brilliant book title! But it turns out that most people don't want to enjoy their job.

As I started to learn about book marketing, I discovered the importance of keywords. I did some keyword searches on Amazon and also checked the number of monthly searches on Google. ‘How to enjoy your job' had 5,400 global monthly searches, whereas ‘career change' had 165,000 global monthly searches.

I decided to change my title as well as the cover, and in 2012, after learning a lot more about craft as well as book marketing, I rewrote and republished the book as Career Change: Stop Hating your Job, Discover What you Really Want to do with your Life and Start Doing It!

Career Change

I also continue to get media attention based on journalists searching for ‘career change' and finding the book online. I've featured as a career change expert on national TV and radio in Australia and the UK, as well as in national newspapers and local papers.

It's also interesting to note that none of them asked who I was published by, so being self-published is no barrier to media attention as long as your product (and you) are professional. Of course, it's important to note that there was no sales spike from the extra media attention, but it's good for social proof.

Categories and keywords are critical for visibility in the online bookstores, so it's well worth putting in some effort here to work out where your book fits.

Write better book reports using the tips, examples, and outlines presented here. This resource covers three types of effective book reports: plot summaries, character analyses, and theme analyses. It also features a specific book report example for students.

How to write a book report (+ book report example)

Whether you're a student looking to show your comprehension of a novel, or simply a book lover wanting to share your thoughts, writing a book report can be a rewarding experience. This guide, filled with tips, tricks, and a book report example, will help you craft a report that effectively communicates your understanding and analysis of your chosen book.

What is a book report?

Book reports can take on many different forms. Writing a book review helps you practice giving your opinion about different aspects of a book, such as an author's use of description or dialogue.

You can write book reports of any type, from fiction to non-fiction research papers, or essay writing; however, there are a few basic elements you need to include to convey why the book you read was interesting when writing a good book report.

Close up shot of student writing a book report in class. Book report example.

Types of book reports

Three types of effective book reports are plot summaries, character analyses, and theme analyses. Each type focuses on different aspects of the book and requires a unique approach. These three types of book reports will help you demonstrate your understanding of the book in different ways.

Plot summary

When you are writing a plot summary for your book report you don't want to simply summarize the story. You need to explain what your opinion is of the story and why you feel the plot is so compelling, unrealistic, or sappy. It is the way you analyze the plot that will make this a good report. Make sure that you use plenty of examples from the book to support your opinions.

Try starting the report with a sentence similar to the following:

The plot of I Married a Sea Captain , by Monica Hubbard, is interesting because it gives the reader a realistic sense of what it was like to be the wife of a whaling captain and live on Nantucket during the 19th century.

Character analysis

If you choose to write a character analysis, you can explore the physical and personality traits of different characters and the way their actions affect the plot of the book.

  • Explore the way a character dresses and what impression that leaves with the reader.
  • What positive characteristics does the character possess?
  • Does the character have a "fatal flaw" that gets him/her into trouble frequently?
  • Try taking examples of dialogue and analyzing the way a character speaks. Discuss the words he/she chooses and the way his/her words affect other characters.
  • Finally, tie all of your observations together by explaining the way the characters make the plot move forward.

In the novel Charlotte's Web , by E. B. White, Templeton the rat may seem like an unnecessary character but his constant quest for food moves the plot forward in many ways.

Theme analyses

Exploring the themes (or big ideas that run throughout the story) in a book can be a great way to write a book report because picking a theme that you care about can make the report easier to write. Try bringing some of your thoughts and feelings as a reader into the report as a way to show the power of a theme. Before you discuss your own thoughts, however, be sure to establish what the theme is and how it appears in the story.

  • Explain  exactly  what theme you will be exploring in your book report.
  • Use as many examples and quotations from the book as possible to prove that the theme is important to the story.
  • Make sure that you talk about each example or quotation you've included. Make a direct connection between the theme and the example from the book.
  • After you have established the theme and thoroughly examined the way it affects the book, include a few sentences about the impact the theme had upon you and why it made the book more or less enjoyable to read.

In the novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry , by Mildred Taylor, the theme of racial prejudice is a major catalyst in the story.

How to write a book report

Close up shot of male student writing a book report in journal. Book report example.

1. Thoroughly read the book

Immerse yourself in the book, taking the time to read it in its entirety. As you read, jot down notes on important aspects such as key points, themes, and character developments.

2. Identify the main elements of the book

Scrutinize the book's primary components, including its main themes, characters, setting, and plot. These elements will form the basis of your report.

3. Formulate a thesis statement

Compose a thesis statement that encapsulates your personal perspective about the book. This should be a concise statement that will guide your analysis and give your report a clear focus.

4. Create a detailed outline

Plan the structure of your book report. This outline should include an introduction, body paragraphs each focusing on a different aspect of the book, and a conclusion.

5. Craft the introduction

The introduction should provide basic information such as the book's title and author, and present your thesis statement. It should engage the reader and make them interested in your analysis.

6. Write the body of the report

In the body of your report, discuss in detail the book's main elements that you identified in step 3. Use specific examples from the text to support your analysis and to prove your thesis statement.

7. Write a strong conclusion

Your conclusion should summarize your analysis, reaffirm your thesis, and provide a closing thought or reflection on the overall book.

8. Review and edit your report

After writing, take the time to revise your report for clarity and coherence. Check for and correct any grammar or spelling errors. Ensure that your report clearly communicates your understanding and analysis of the book.

9. Include citations

High school teacher hands back graded book reports. Book report example.

Book report example

Below is a book report example on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

In  To Kill a Mockingbird , Harper Lee presents a thoughtful exploration of racial prejudice, morality, and the loss of innocence. Set in the small, fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression, the book centers around the Finch family - young Scout, her older brother Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus. Scout's character provides a fresh perspective as she narrates her experiences and observations of the unjust racial prejudice in her town. Her honesty and curiosity, coupled with her father's teachings, allow her to grow from innocence to a more profound understanding of her society's inequalities. The plot revolves around Atticus Finch, a respected lawyer, defending a black man, Tom Robinson, unjustly accused of raping a white woman. As the trial progresses, it becomes clear that Robinson is innocent, and the accusation was a product of racial prejudice. Despite compelling evidence in Robinson's favor, he is convicted, symbolizing the power of bias over truth. The theme of racial prejudice is a significant part of the book. Lee uses the trial and its unjust outcome to critique the racial prejudice prevalent in society. For example, despite Atticus's solid defense, the jury's racial bias leads them to find Robinson guilty. This instance highlights how deeply ingrained prejudice can subvert justice. The book also explores the theme of the loss of innocence. Scout and Jem's experiences with prejudice and injustice lead to their loss of innocence and a better understanding of the world's complexities. For example, Scout's realization of her town's unfair treatment of Robinson demonstrates her loss of innocence and her understanding of societal biases. Overall,  To Kill a Mockingbird  is a compelling exploration of the harsh realities of prejudice and the loss of innocence. Harper Lee's intricate characters and vivid storytelling have made this book a classic.

The above is an excellent book report example for several reasons. First, it provides a clear, concise summary of the plot without giving away the entire story. Second, it analyzes the main characters, their roles, and their impacts on the story. Third, it discusses the major themes of the book - racial prejudice and loss of innocence - and supports these themes with evidence from the text. Finally, it presents a personal perspective on the book's impact and overall message, demonstrating a deep understanding of the book's significance.

Book report checklist

Always  include the following elements in any book report:

  • The type of book report you are writing
  • The book's title
  • The author of the book
  • The time when the story takes place
  • The location where the story takes place
  • The names and a  brief  description of each of the characters you will be discussing
  • Many quotations and examples from the book to support your opinions
  • A thesis statement
  • The point of view of the narrator
  • Summary of the book
  • The main points or themes discussed in the work of fiction or non-fiction
  • The first paragraph (introductory paragraph), body paragraphs, and final paragraph
  • The writing styles of the author
  • A critical analysis of the fiction or non-fiction book

Don't forget!

No matter what type of book report you decide to write, ensure it includes basic information about the main characters, and make sure that your writing is clear and expressive so that it’s easy for audiences in middle school, high school, college-level, or any grade level to understand. Also, include examples from the book to support your opinions. Afterward, conduct thorough proofreading to complete the writing process. Book reports may seem disconnected from your other schoolwork, but they help you learn to summarize, compare and contrast, make predictions and connections, and consider different perspectives & skills you'll need throughout your life.

Title, Abstract and Keywords

The importance of titles.

The title of your manuscript is usually the first introduction readers (and reviewers) have to your work. Therefore, you must select a title that grabs attention, accurately describes the contents of your manuscript, and makes people want to read further.

An effective title should:

  • Convey the  main topics  of the study
  • Highlight the  importance  of the research
  • Be  concise
  • Attract  readers

Writing a good title for your manuscript can be challenging. First, list the topics covered by the manuscript. Try to put all of the topics together in the title using as few words as possible. A title that is too long will seem clumsy, annoy readers, and probably not meet journal requirements.

Does Vaccinating Children and Adolescents with Inactivated Influenza Virus Inhibit the Spread of Influenza in Unimmunized Residents of Rural Communities?

This title has too many unnecessary words.

Influenza Vaccination of Children: A Randomized Trial

This title doesn’t give enough information about what makes the manuscript interesting.

Effect of Child Influenza Vaccination on Infection Rates in Rural Communities: A Randomized Trial This is an effective title. It is short, easy to understand, and conveys the important aspects of the research.

Think about why your research will be of interest to other scientists. This should be related to the reason you decided to study the topic. If your title makes this clear, it will likely attract more readers to your manuscript. TIP: Write down a few possible titles, and then select the best to refine further. Ask your colleagues their opinion. Spending the time needed to do this will result in a better title.

Abstract and Keywords

The Abstract is:

  • A  summary  of the content of the journal manuscript
  • A time-saving  shortcut  for busy researchers
  • A guide to the most important parts of your manuscript’s written content

Many readers will only read the Abstract of your manuscript. Therefore, it has to be able to  stand alone . In most cases the abstract is the only part of your article that appears in indexing databases such as Web of Science or PubMed and so will be the most accessed part of your article; making a good impression will encourage researchers to read your full paper.

A well written abstract can also help speed up the peer-review process. During peer review, referees are usually only sent the abstract when invited to review the paper. Therefore, the abstract needs to contain enough information about the paper to allow referees to make a judgement as to whether they have enough expertise to review the paper and be engaging enough for them to want to review it.

Your Abstract should answer these questions about your manuscript:

  • What was done?
  • Why did you do it?
  • What did you find?
  • Why are these findings useful and important?

Answering these questions lets readers know the most important points about your study, and helps them decide whether they want to read the rest of the paper. Make sure you follow the proper journal manuscript formatting guidelines when preparing your abstract.

TIP: Journals often set a maximum word count for Abstracts, often 250 words, and no citations. This is to ensure that the full Abstract appears in indexing services.

Keywords  are a tool to help indexers and search engines find relevant papers. If database search engines can find your journal manuscript, readers will be able to find it too. This will increase the number of people reading your manuscript, and likely lead to more citations.

However, to be effective, Keywords must be chosen carefully. They should:

  • Represent  the content of your manuscript
  • Be  specific  to your field or sub-field

Manuscript title:  Direct observation of nonlinear optics in an isolated carbon nanotube

Poor keywords:  molecule, optics, lasers, energy lifetime

Better keywords:  single-molecule interaction, Kerr effect, carbon nanotubes, energy level structure

Manuscript title:  Region-specific neuronal degeneration after okadaic acid administration Poor keywords:  neuron, brain, OA (an abbreviation), regional-specific neuronal degeneration, signaling

Better keywords:  neurodegenerative diseases; CA1 region, hippocampal; okadaic acid; neurotoxins; MAP kinase signaling system; cell death

Manuscript title:  Increases in levels of sediment transport at former glacial-interglacial transitions

Poor keywords:  climate change, erosion, plant effects Better keywords:  quaternary climate change, soil erosion, bioturbation

Titles, Abstracts & Keywords

The title of your manuscript is usually the first introduction readers (and reviewers) have to your work. Therefore, you must select a title that grabs attention, accurately describes the contents of your manuscript, and makes people want to read further.

Additionally, Most people rely on electronic search engines to find articles. Usually they search through databases that contain only the title, author list, and abstract of articles, excluding any keywords attached to the article by its authors. It is therefore important to include in the title and/or abstract the words that potential readers of the article are likely to use during a search.

An effective title should:

  • Convey the main topics of the study
  • Highlight the importance of the research
  • Attract readers

Writing a good title for your manuscript can be challenging. First, list the topics covered by the manuscript. Try to put all of the topics together in the title using as few words as possible. A title that is too long will seem clumsy, annoy readers, and probably not meet journal requirements.

  • This title has too many unnecessary words.
  • This title doesn’t give enough information about what makes the manuscript interesting.
  • This is an effective title. It is short, easy to understand, and conveys the important aspects of the research.

Think about why your research will be of interest to other researchers. This should be related to the reason you decided to study the topic. If your title makes this clear, it will likely attract more readers to your manuscript.

TIP: Write down a few possible titles, and then select the best to refine further. Ask your colleagues their opinion. Spending the time needed to do this will result in a better title.

Selecting the most important information

The abstract must outline the most important aspects of the study while providing only a limited amount of detail on its background, methodology and results. Authors need to critically assess the different aspects of the manuscript and choose those that are sufficiently important to deserve inclusion in the abstract.

Once the abstract is ready it can be helpful to ask a colleague who is not involved in the research to go through it to ensure that the descriptions are clear. After you have drafted the manuscript, you should go back to the abstract to check that it agrees with the contents of the final manuscript.

Abstracts should have a structured format, serving several purposes: it helps authors summarize the different aspects of their work; it makes the abstract more immediately clear; and it helps peer reviewers and readers assess the contents of the manuscript.

The abstract structure varies between journals and between types of articles. Authors should check that the abstract of their manuscript is consistent with the requirements of the article type and journal to which the manuscript will be submitted.

  • Poor keywords : molecule, optics, lasers, energy lifetime
  • Better keywords : single-molecule interaction, Kerr effect, carbon nanotubes, energy level structure
  • Poor keywords : neuron, brain, OA (an abbreviation), regional-specific neuronal degeneration, signaling
  • Better keywords : neurodegenerative diseases; CA1 region, hippocampal; okadaic acid; neurotoxins; MAP kinase signaling system; cell death
  • Poor keywords : climate change, erosion, plant effects
  • Better keywords : quaternary climate change, soil erosion, bioturbation

So as you can see, there are some interesting phrases. But these are just some of what is out there.

If you want to see more keywords, or even find specific phrases that work for your book or your sub-genre, then be sure to check out Publisher Rocket. There you can not only see best selling keywords, but you can also see how many people searched for that keyword.

But that's not all. Our system can also show you which keywords are actually making sales, and are not just being searched for.

This is because many Amazon shoppers will type in a phrase, and realize it doesn't give them what they want. So they start to niche down, or describe better the kind of book they want. Our system sees this and uses the Red, Yellow, Green system to help you see whether or not that phrase is a good selling phrase or not.

So, if you don't have Publisher Rocket , be sure to check that out.

Armed with these insights, you can now optimize your book's metadata to capitalize on the latest keywords and trends:

  • Incorporate trending keywords: Use the top keywords for your genre in your book's title, subtitle, and description, ensuring they fit naturally and accurately represent your content.
  • Leverage Amazon's categories: Select the most relevant and specific categories for your book, focusing on less competitive niches where you have a better chance of ranking high.
  • Craft a compelling description: Write a book description that hooks readers and strategically includes your target keywords while highlighting popular tropes and subgenres.
  • Invest in a professional cover: Ensure your book cover is eye-catching, genre-appropriate, and in line with current design trends to attract readers browsing search results.

By implementing these optimization strategies, you'll give your book the best chance of being discovered by your target audience on Amazon.

An index is an alphabetical list of keywords contained in the text of a book or other lengthy writing project. It includes pointers to where those keywords or concepts are mentioned in the book—typically page numbers, but sometimes footnote numbers, chapters, or sections. The index can be found at the end of the work, and makes a longer nonfiction work more accessible for readers, since they can turn directly to the information they need. Typically you'll start indexing after you've completed the main writing and research. [1] X Research source

Preparing Your Index

Step 1 Choose your indexing source.

  • Typically, if you index from a hard copy you'll have to transfer your work to a digital file. If the work is particularly long, try to work straight from the computer so you can skip this extra step.

Step 2 Decide what needs to be indexed.

  • If footnotes or endnotes are merely source citations, they don't need to be included in the index.
  • Generally, you don't need to index glossaries, bibliographies, acknowledgements, or illustrative items such as charts and graphs.
  • If you're not sure whether something should be indexed, ask yourself if it contributes something substantial to the text. If it doesn't, it typically doesn't need to be indexed.

Step 3 List cited authors if necessary.

  • In most cases, if you have a "works cited" section appearing at the end of your text you won't need to index authors. You would still include their names in the general index, however, if you discussed them in the text rather than simply citing their work.

Step 4 Create index cards for entries if you’re indexing by hand.

  • For example, if you're writing a book on bicycle maintenance, you might have index cards for "gears," "wheels," and "chain."
  • Put yourself in your reader's shoes, and ask yourself why they would pick up your book and what information they would likely be looking for. Chapter or section headings can help guide you as well.

Step 5 Use nouns for the main headings of entries.

  • For example, a dessert cookbook that included several types of ice cream might have one entry for "ice cream," followed by subentries for "strawberry," "chocolate," and "vanilla."
  • Treat proper nouns as a single unit. For example, "United States Senate" and "United States House of Representatives" would be separate entries, rather than subentries under the entry "United States."

Step 6 Include subentries for entries with 5 or more pointers.

  • Stick to nouns and brief phrases for subentries, avoiding any unnecessary words.
  • For example, suppose you are writing a book about comic books that discusses Wonder Woman's influence on the feminist movement. You might include a subentry under "Wonder Woman" that says "influence on feminism."

Step 7 Identify potential cross references.

  • For example, if you were writing a dessert cookbook, you might have entries for "ice cream" and "sorbet." Since these frozen treats are similar, they would make good cross references of each other.

Formatting Entries and Subentries

Step 1 Confirm the style and formatting requirements.

  • The style guide provides specifics for you in terms of spacing, alignment, and punctuation of your entries and subentries.

Step 2 Use the correct punctuation.

  • For example, an entry in the index of a political science book might read: "capitalism: 21st century, 164; American free trade, 112; backlash against, 654; expansion of, 42; Russia, 7; and television, 3; treaties, 87."
  • If an entry contains no subentries, simply follow the entry with a comma and list the page numbers.

Step 3 Organize your entries in alphabetical order.

  • People's names typically are listed alphabetically by their last name. Put a comma after the last name and add the person's first name.
  • Noun phrases typically are inverted. For example, "adjusting-height saddle" would be listed in an index as "saddle, adjusting-height." [8] X Research source

Step 4 Fill in subentries.

  • Avoid repeating words in the entry in the subentries. If several subentries repeat the same word, add it as a separate entry, with a cross reference back to the original entry. For example, in a dessert cookbook you might have entries for "ice cream, flavors" and "ice cream, toppings."
  • Subentries typically are listed alphabetically as well. If subentry terms have symbols, hyphens, slashes, or numbers, you can usually ignore them.

Step 5 Capitalize proper names.

  • If a proper name, such as the name of a book or song, includes a word such as "a" or "the" at the beginning of the title, you can either omit it or include it after a comma ("Importance of Being Earnest, The"). Check your style guide for the proper rule that applies to your index, and be consistent.

Step 6 Include all page numbers for each entry or subentry.

  • When listing a series of pages, if the first page number is 1-99 or a multiple of 100, you also use all of the digits. For example, "ice cream: vanilla, 100-109."
  • For other numbers, you generally only have to list the digits that changed for subsequent page numbers. For example, "ice cream: vanilla, 112-18."
  • Use the word passim if references are scattered over a range of pages. For example, "ice cream: vanilla, 45-68 passim . Only use this if there are a large number of references within that range of pages.

Step 7 Add cross references with the phrase “See also.”

  • Place a period after the last page number in the entry, then type See also in italics, with the word "see" capitalized. Then include the name of the similar entry you want to use.
  • For example, an entry in an index for a dessert cookbook might contain the following entry: "ice cream: chocolate, 4, 17, 24; strawberry, 9, 37; vanilla, 18, 25, 32-35. See also sorbet."

Step 8 Include “See” references to avoid confusion.

  • For example, a beginning cyclist may be looking in a manual for "tire patches," which are called "boots" in cycling terms. If you're writing a bicycle manual aimed at beginners, you might include a "see" cross reference: "tire patches, see boots."

Editing Your Index

Step 1 Use the

  • You'll also want to search for related terms, especially if you talk about a general concept in the text without necessarily mentioning it by name.

Step 2 Simplify entries to suit your readers.

  • If you have any entries that are too complex or that might confuse your readers, you might want to simplify them or add a cross reference.
  • For example, a bicycle maintenance text might discuss "derailleurs," but a novice would more likely look for terms such as "gearshift" or "shifter" and might not recognize that term.

Step 3 Include descriptions of subentries where helpful.

  • For example, you might include an entry in a dessert cookbook index that read "ice cream, varieties of: chocolate, 54; strawberry, 55; vanilla, 32, 37, 56. See also sorbet."

Step 4 Trim or expand your index as needed.

  • Generally, an entry should occur on two or three page numbers. If it's only found in one place, you may not need to include it at all. If you decide it is necessary, see if you can include it as a subentry under a different entry.
  • For example, suppose you are indexing a dessert cookbook, and it has ice cream on two pages and sorbet on one page. You might consider putting these together under a larger heading, such as "frozen treats."

Step 5 Check your index for accuracy.

  • You may want to run searches again to make sure the index is comprehensive and includes as many pointers as possible to help guide your readers.

Step 6 Proofread your entries.

  • Make sure any cross references match the exact wording of the entry or entries they reference.

Step 7 Set the final dimensions.

  • Indexes are typically set in 2 columns, using a smaller font than that used in the main text. Entries begin on the first space of the line, with the subsequent lines of the same entry indented.

What is the proper usmc book report format.

While there is no official book report format for PME in the Marine Corps, there is a concise and easy to understand book report format available via the Manpower and Reserve Affairs website (available for download at https://www.manpower.usmc.mil/wordpress/ ).

For the sake of convenience, the text of that document is included below:

BOOK REPORT FORMAT

Introduction: Here you want to provide basic information about the book, and a sense of what your report will be about. You should include:

  • Title (underlined)/Author
  • A brief (1-2 sentences) introduction to the book and the report/review.

Body: There are two main sections for this part. The first is an explanation of what the book is about. The second is your opinions about the book and how successful it is. There are some differences between reports on fiction or other imaginative writing and reports on non-fiction books. But for both, a good place to start is to explain the author's purpose and/or the main themes of the book. Then you can summarize.

  • For fiction or other creative writing : Provide brief descriptions of the setting, the point of view (who tells the story), the protagonist, and other major characters. If there is a distinct mood or tone, discuss that as well. Give a concise plot summary. Along with the sequence of major events, you may want to discuss the book's climax and resolution, and/or literary devices such as foreshadowing.
  • For non-fiction : Provide a general overview of the author's topic, main points, and argument. What is the thesis? What are the important conclusions? Don't try to summarize each chapter or every angle. Choose the ones that are most significant and interesting to you.

Analysis and Evaluation: In this section you analyze or critique the book. You can write about your own opinions; just be sure that you explain and support them with examples. Some questions you might want to consider:

  • Did the author achieve his or her purpose?
  • Is the writing effective, powerful, difficult, beautiful?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the book?
  • For non-fiction, what are the author's qualifications to write about the subject? Do you agree with the author's arguments and conclusions?
  • What is your overall response to the book? Did you find it interesting, moving, dull?
  • Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

Conclusion: Briefly conclude by pulling your thoughts together. You may want to say what impression the book left you with or emphasize what you want your reader to know about it.

How to Find the Best Keywords for Kindle Publishing: Optimize Your Book's Visibility

Whether you're a first-time publisher or you've already got a dozen books bringing in monthly royalties, you can't scale a publishing business without keywords. Just like Google, Amazon's search engine uses these words to determine which books to prioritize on their results page.

Play your keyword cards right, and your books will rank on the very first page...play them wrong, and your books might get lost forever beyond page 20.

By the end of this blog article, you'll know exactly how to find the right Kindle keywords for your book to improve your seller rank and help readers find your work. We'll also let you in on some secrets about crafting the perfect title with our top keyword research tools.

What are Kindle Keywords?

Keywords are exactly what they sound like—Words that unlock greater visibility for your books! Think about it this way. When you're working with limited real estate, like in your title and book description, every single word counts. If you wrote a book all about how to garden on a budget, your title and book description probably won't mention other irrelevant words like "dragon" or "yoga," but you might mention your audience.

Pop Quiz! Which title is better?

A) "How to Garden on a Budget: A Millennial's Guide to Perfect Backyard Vegetables"

B) "Cheap Gardening"

If you answered "A," give yourself a pat on the back. It's way more specific and uses keyword phrases that people might actually search for, like "How to Garden," "Garden on a Budget," and "Millennial's Guide."

Fundamentals of Kindle Keyword Research

So, now you know what they are, but how important are they really? And how do you even choose keywords when there are thousands of other books on the market?

Here's your Keyword Bootcamp 101:

How Important are Keywords on KDP?

If you like making book sales , keywords are incredibly important when you're publishing on Amazon because they'll be used in your book sales page as well as your Amazon ads.

Pro Tip: Spelling matters!

We got a question on one of our live coaching calls recently. Does it matter if I use the money symbol ($) instead of an "S" in my book about finances? The answer is YES! Most people browsing the Kindle store aren't going to type in "Money Hack$" into the search bar, but they might type "Money Hacks" instead. And there's a way to figure out exactly what your audience is searching for. Keep reading!

How Keyword Phrases Impact Search Results

Amazon's algorithm prioritizes relevance and customer behavior when determining which books to display in search results. And from a reader's perspective, this makes sense. If you're looking for help training a new puppy, a children's book about cats won't do you any good.

To rank well, your book's title, subtitle, and metadata need to contain specific keywords that accurately reflect the content. These keywords should align with the terms potential readers are using to search for their next read.

When Should You Do Keyword Research as a Self-Publisher?

Ideally, you'd do all your keyword research BEFORE completing your book manuscript so you don't waste time working on a book that's not going to be profitable. But we all make mistakes on our self-publishing journeys, and it's never too late to course correct for your next book.

Finding the Right Keywords for Your Kindle Book

Alright, let's jump into the meat and potatoes and why you're really here. To find keywords and boost your best seller rank.

Here's the rundown for finding the best Amazon keywords:

Types of Keyword Phrases

  • Broad Keywords: These help place your book in general search categories but are highly competitive.
  • Specific Keywords: Also known as long-tail keywords, these are less competitive and more targeted, possibly increasing your book's visibility to a niche audience.

Brainstorming and Initial Keyword Generation

There's nothing wrong with starting with a gut feeling or following your intuition as long as you find the research to back it up. Try to jot down a list of 10-20 short phrases you think people search for related to your broad topic. You'll want a mix of general and specific search terms.

Let's go back to our earlier example for the book "How to Garden on a Budget: A Millennial's Guide to Perfect Backyard Vegetables." Let's say we didn't have this title crafted yet. A solid brainstorm list might include some of these words:

  • Easy gardening
  • Gardening on a budget
  • Vegetable gardening
  • Growing vegetables in your backyard
  • Millennial guide to gardening

At this stage, there are no right or wrong answers because you're just trying to get your ideas down on paper. Eventually, we'll curate the list and narrow it down, but we can't do that until we have a list of ideas to work with in the first place.

Amazon Autocomplete

Amazon's search bar is an underrated tool for keyword research. As you type, it will suggest popular search terms that are frequently used by readers. These suggestions are based on real search volume data, and their algorithm is constantly changing to reflect what they think customers want the most. Make a list of these suggestions and add it to your initial brainstorm list!

Here's what currently pops up when you type "Garden" into the Amazon search bar:

book report keywords

Notice how you get completely different suggestions when you type in "Gardening" instead:

Google and Alternative Search Engines

You can do the same exact thing with other search engines like Google and Bing to build up your brainstorming list. You can also use Google's "People also ask" and "Related searches" sections to find variations of your initial keywords. These sections provide insight into broader search patterns that can be applied to your Kindle keyword strategy.

Here's an example:

book report keywords

Analyzing Search Volume and Competition

Once you've got a solid brainstorming list, it's time to start gathering the data. What keyword phrase are people actually searching for? How many people are typing in this search phrase?

At this stage in the game, you'll need a tool like KDSpy to see the exact numbers for the top keywords that your competitors are using. Start by plugging in each phrase from your list to see what kinds of books pop up. Pay attention to titles and subtitles that appear frequently and the keywords they incorporate. You can also take notes on their customer reviews and what readers liked (or didn't like) about these books.

Pro Tip: The trick is to aim for keywords with high search volume but lower competition to have a better chance of standing out in the Amazon search results.

Amazon's Keyword Rules

Amazon KDP has a feature for entering keywords in keyword boxes, with an Amazon keywords character limit. You are allowed to choose up to seven keywords to feature outside of your title and book description to help readers find your book using Amazon's search engine.

Your keywords and key phrases should not include ASINs or URLs.

Using Amazon Categories to Boost Visibility

In addition to the seven keyword boxes, you also get to choose categories for your book. Your book can rank higher in specific categories like "hobbies," making it easier for readers to find it in the Kindle store when browsing.

Stuffing Words (and Why You Shouldn't Do This)

Amazon's algorithm is always at work trying to flag dangerous and inappropriate content as well as content that doesn't align with its terms of service. Something that a lot of first-time publishers do accidentally is "keyword stuffing." Amazon really doesn't like it if you include the same keyword twice in your title and subtitle. If you've accidentally made this mistake, it's not always grounds for account termination, but you might get a warning in your email inbox.

The same goes for your book's metadata and description. If you just copy/paste the same word over and over again to try to fix the search results, you're most likely going to get your account flagged. It's not worth it!

Try to think of selling books like taking your readers on a safari. You want the itinerary (book description in this case) to outline everything they can expect from the journey they're about to take, but you also want to leave room for their imagination.

Pro Tip: Read about some of the self-publishing mistakes the Mikkelsen Twins made when they first started their publishing journeys in an exclusive interview with Rasmus !

Advanced Kindle Keyword Techniques

Once you start getting the hang of things, here are some ways you can better target keywords to reach the right readers.

Identify and Solve Reader Pain Points

Identify common pain points your ideal readers encounter and position your Kindle book as the solution with precise keywords. For example, if your readers struggle with learning a complex subject, include keywords such as "easy," "step-by-step," or "beginner-friendly" in your listing to make the subject less intimidating.

You need to get to know your audience inside and out. What do they do for fun? What does a typical day look like for them? What's their budget? What lingo do they use and not use?

Use Subtitles and Series Titles

Anytime you choose to leave off a subtitle, you're sacrificing keywords for your book. Choosing a good series title with keyword phrases in mind can also be a great way to build your publishing brand and make it more memorable.

Start Running Amazon Ads

Amazon Kindle Ads can significantly boost your Kindle book's visibility. By bidding on relevant keywords, your ads appear in front of potential buyers, directly impacting your sales. Tailoring ads with long-tail keywords targeting your ideal reader profile increases the likelihood of conversion. Monitor your ad performance closely using Amazon's analytics to refine your approach.

Best Practices for Amazon KDP Keywords

Unfortunately, this isn't one of those "set it and forget it" parts of self-publishing, and you'll likely need to change keywords regularly if you want to keep up with your competition. Here's how to be efficient:

Search Intent and Relevance

  • Search intent refers to the reason why people are searching for a specific phrase. Keep this in mind, especially when certain words can mean totally different things in different niches. A search for "Python," for example, could be for books about animals, but it could also be for books on coding instead.

Using Incognito Mode

  • Whenever you're doing new keyword research, you may want to start a new incognito tab or private browsing tab. Self-publishing mentors and experts are split on whether this actually makes a huge difference, but it doesn't hurt!

Review Sales and Royalty Reports:

  • Regularly review your sales and royalty reports on KDP. While these don't track keywords directly, an increase in sales or KENPC reads (Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count) can indicate effective keyword usage.
  • Monitor these reports, especially after updating keywords in your book’s metadata, to gauge any changes in performance.

Check Your Amazon Best Seller Rank (BSR):

  • Keep an eye on your book’s Amazon Best Seller Rank in each of its categories. A significant change in BSR might be linked to how well your keywords are resonating with potential readers.
  • If your BSR improves following a keyword update, it could suggest that the new keywords are more effective.

Review Customer Reviews and Feedback:

  • Read through customer reviews and feedback on your book. Sometimes, readers may mention specific aspects or terms that align with your keywords, indicating what attracted them to your book or what would make it even better.

Conduct Manual Keyword Search:

  • Conduct regular searches on Amazon using your keywords. See where your book appears in search results for those terms.
  • A higher placement in search results after updating keywords could signify better optimization.

Periodic Reassessment and Updates:

  • Regularly reassess your keyword strategy. If you're not seeing improved results in sales, reviews, or search ranking, consider revising your keywords.
  • The book market and reader interests can shift, so it’s important to keep your keywords up-to-date.

Craft Ad Campaigns:

  • If you're using Amazon Advertising, you can directly track how specific keywords perform in terms of impressions, clicks, and conversions. This can offer more precise insights into which keywords are effective.

Staying On Top of Amazon KDP Changes

Amazon reserves the right to change its algorithm at any point.

  • Stay Informed: Follow along with blogs like this one and consider joining some self-publishing Facebook groups to stay updated on any big algorithm changes.
  • Adaptability: Be ready to tweak your keyword choices in response to new Amazon product features or search engine updates.

How to add and update keywords

Best practices, useful keyword types, keywords to avoid, other metadata and keyword tips.

  • Sign in to KDP .
  • Go to your Bookshelf and click the ellipsis button ("…") under the KINDLE EBOOK ACTIONS , PAPERBACK ACTIONS , or HARDCOVER ACTIONS menu next to your book.
  • Select Edit Details for your book format.
  • Under the Keywords section, add/edit your keywords.
  • Go to the bottom of the page, and click Save and Continue .
  • Once you reach the book Pricing page, click the Publish button at the bottom of the page.
  • Combine keywords in the most logical order. Customers search for "military science fiction" but probably not for "fiction science military"
  • Use up to seven keywords or short phrases. Keep an eye on the character limit in the text field
  • Before publishing, search using keywords you’re considering on Amazon. If you get irrelevant or unsatisfying results, make some changes. When searching, look at the suggestions that appear in the "Search" field drop down
  • Think like a reader. Imagine how you'd search if you were a customer
  • Setting (Colonial America)
  • Character types (single dad, veteran)
  • Character roles (strong female lead)
  • Plot themes (coming of age, forgiveness)
  • Story tone (dystopian, feel-good)
  • Information covered elsewhere in your book's metadata (title, contributors, etc.)
  • Words already mentioned in your book categories (e.g. 19th Century History)
  • Subjective claims about quality (e.g. "best novel ever")
  • Time-sensitive statements ("new," "on sale," "available now")
  • Information common to most items in the category ("book")
  • Spelling errors
  • Variants of spacing, punctuation, capitalization, and pluralization ("80GB" and "80 GB," "computer" and "computers", etc.). Exception: Words translated in more than one way (e.g. "Mao Zedong" or "Mao Tse-tung," "Hanukkah" or "Chanukah"
  • Anything misrepresentative like the name of an author not associated with your book. This kind of information can create a confusing customer experience. Kindle Direct Publishing has a zero tolerance policy for metadata that is meant to advertise, promote, or mislead
  • Brands that you do not own or that you are unauthorized to use
  • Quotation marks in search terms. Single words work better than phrases, and specific words work better than general ones. If you enter "complex suspenseful whodunit," only people who type all of those words will find your book. For better results, enter this: complex suspenseful whodunit. Customers can search for any of those words and find your book
  • Amazon program names like as "Kindle Unlimited" or "KDP Select"
  • Customers are more likely to skim past long titles (over 60 characters)
  • Focus your book's description on the book's content
  • Make sure your book's metadata adhere to KDP's guidelines
  • Your keywords can capture useful, relevant information that won't fit in your title and description (setting, character, plot, theme, etc.)
  • You can change keywords and descriptions as often as you like
  • If your book is available in different formats (physical, audio), keep your keywords and description consistent across formats

How To Use The Google Ads Search Terms Report

Maximize your Google Ads profitability with the essential Google Ads Search Terms Report. Learn how to refine your keyword strategy, enhance targeting, and boost your ROI.

book report keywords

One of the most essential aspects of a profitable Google Ads strategy is reaching the right people, with the right message, while they’re searching.

To do this correctly, you need to know exactly how your ads are doing and what words potential customers are using to search.

This is where the Google Ads search terms report comes in handy.

This report is a goldmine and an invaluable asset to every Google Ads account.

With insights into exact phrases being used to trigger your ads, the search terms report can help:

  • Significantly refine your keyword strategy.
  • Enhance your targeting.
  • Boost your return on investment (ROI).

Let’s get into why the Google Ads search terms report is not only helpful but essential for maximizing Google Ads profitability.

What Is The Google Ads Search Terms Report?

The search terms report is a performance tool that shows how your ad performed when triggered by actual searches on the Google Search Network.

The report shows specific terms and phrases that triggered your ad to show, which helps determine if you’re bidding on the right keywords or using the right match types.

If you find search terms that aren’t relevant for your business, you can easily add them to your negative keyword list repository.

This helps you spend your budget more effectively by ensuring your ads are only triggered for relevant, useful searches by potential customers.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between a search term and a keyword:

  • Search term:  Shows the exact word or phrase a customer enters on the Google Search Network to trigger an ad.
  • Keyword: The word or phrase that Google Ads advertisers target and bid on to show their ads to customers.

How To Create A Search Terms Report

Creating a search terms report in your Google Ads account is simple, and better yet – it can be automated !

To view your search terms report, you’ll need to:

  • Log into your Google Ads account.
  • Navigate to  “Campaigns” >> “Insights & reports” >> “Search terms”

Below is an example of where to navigate in your Google Ads account to find the search terms report.

Screenshot of a Google Ads interface showing the

After running this report, there are multiple actions you can take as a marketer:

  • Add top-performing searches to corresponding ad groups as keywords.
  • Select the desired match type (e.g. broad, phrase, exact) if adding new keywords.
  • Add irrelevant search terms to a negative keyword list.

3 Ways To Use Search Terms Report Data

As mentioned above, there are numerous ways you can use the search terms report data to optimize campaign performance.

Let’s take a look at three examples of how to use this report to get the best bang for your buck.

1. Refine Existing Keyword Lists

The first area the search terms report can help with is refining existing keyword lists.

By combing through the search terms report, you can find areas of opportunities, including:

  • What searches are leading to conversions.
  • What searches are irrelevant to the product or service.
  • What searches have high impressions but low clicks.
  • How searches are being mapped to existing keywords and ad groups.

For searches leading to conversions, it likely makes sense to add those as keywords to an existing ad group or create a new ad group.

If you’re finding some searches to be irrelevant to what you’re selling, it’s best to add them as negative keywords. That prevents your ad from showing up for that search moving forward.

If some searches have a high volume of impressions, but very few clicks, these will take further consideration. If it’s a keyword worth bidding on, it may indicate that the bid strategy isn’t competitive enough – meaning you’ll have to take action on your bid strategy.

If a search term is being triggered by multiple keywords and ad groups, this is a case of cross-pollution of keywords. This can lead to lower ROI because it’s essentially having multiple keywords bid on that search term, which can drive up the cost. If this happens, you have a few options:

  • Review and update existing keyword match types as necessary.
  • Add negative keywords where appropriate at the ad group or campaign level to avoid cross-pollution.

Ultimately, using the search terms report in this way allows you to determine what is performing well and eliminate poor performers.

2. Understand How Your Audience Is Actually Searching For Your Product

Something I often see is a mismatch of how a company talks about its product or service vs. how a customer is actually searching for it in the real world.

If you’re bidding on keywords you think describe your product or service but are not getting any traction, you could be misaligning expectations.

Oftentimes, searches that lead to conversions are from terms you wouldn’t have thought to bid on without looking at the search terms report.

One of this report’s most underutilized use cases is finding lesser-known ways customers are searching for and finding your product.

Finding these types of keywords may result in the creation of a new campaign, especially if the search terms don’t fit existing ad group structures.

Building out campaigns by different search themes allows for appropriate bidding strategies for each because not all keyword values are created equal!

Understanding how a customer is describing their need for a product or service not only helps your keyword strategy but can lead to better-aligned product positioning.

This leads us to a third way the search term report can help your campaigns.

3. Optimize Ad Copy and Landing Pages

As discussed in #2, customers’ language and phrases can provide valuable insights into their needs and preferences.

Marketers can use the search terms report to better tailor ad copy , making it more relevant and appealing to prospective customers.

And let’s not forget about the corresponding landing page!

Once a user clicks on an ad, they expect to see an alignment of what they searched for and what is presented on a website.

Make sure that landing page content is updated regularly to better match the searcher’s intent.

This can result in a better user experience and an improvement in conversion rates.

How Using The Search Terms Report Can Help ROI

All three examples above are ways that the search terms report can improve campaign ROI.

Let’s take a look at each example further.

How Refining Keywords Helps ROI

Part of refining existing keywords is negating any irrelevant search terms that trigger an ad.

Having a solid negative keyword strategy gets rid of “unwanted” spending on keywords that don’t make sense.

That previously “wasted” spend then gets redirected to campaigns that regularly drive higher ROI.

Additionally, adding top-performing search terms gives you better control from a bid strategy perspective.

Being able to pull the appropriate levers and setting proper bid strategies by search theme ultimately leads to better ROI.

How Understanding Audience Intent Helps ROI

By understanding the exact language and search terms that potential customers use, marketers can update ad copy and landing pages to better match those searches.

This can increase ad relevance and Ad Rank within Google Ads.

These items help with keyword Quality Score, which can help reduce CPCs as your Quality Score increases.

More relevant ads likely lead to higher click-through rates, which leads to a higher likelihood of converting those users!

How Updating Ad Copy And Landing Pages Helps ROI

This example goes hand-in-hand with the above recommendation.

As you start to better understand the audience’s search intent, updating ad copy and landing pages to reflect their search indicates better ad relevance.

Once a user clicks on that relevant ad, they find the content of the landing page matches better to what they’re looking for.

This enhanced relevance can significantly increase the likelihood of conversion, which ultimately boosts ROI .

Use This Report To Make Data-Driven Decisions

Google Ads is an integral part of any digital marketing strategy , often accounting for a large portion of your marketing budget.

By regularly reviewing the search terms report, you can refine your marketing budget to make your Google Ads campaigns more effective.

Using this report to make data-driven decisions that fine-tune multiple facets of campaign management leads to more effective ad spending, higher conversions, and ultimately higher ROI.

Negro Leagues' statistics will be incorporated into Major League Baseball’s historical records on Wednesday

book report keywords

Babe Ruth has long been considered the greatest player in baseball history, with arguments made for Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Barry Bonds and even Shohei Ohtani.

Well, there’s now a new player entering the debate: Hall of Fame catcher Josh Gibson.

Gibson, and all the former Negro League players, will have their statistics officially incorporated into Major League Baseball’s historical records, according to a person familiar with the announcement. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity since the official announcement is scheduled for Wednesday.

It's been 3 1/2 years since MLB officially elevated Negro Leagues' statistics to 'Major League' status in December, 2020.

Gibson, who spent his entire career in the Negro Leagues from 1930, 1933-40 and 1942-46, will now be considered the greatest catcher of all-time, and arguably the best player of all-time, according to the official historical records after an independent committee reviewed them.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

Gibson is MLB’s new all-time career leader in batting average (.372, moving ahead of Ty Cobb), slugging percentage (.718, moving ahead of Ruth), OPS (1.177, ahead of Ruth), and holds the all-time single season records in each of those categories.

“When you hear Josh Gibson’s name now, it’s not just that he was the greatest player in the Negro Leagues,’’ Sean Gibson, Gibson’s great grandson, told USA TODAY Sports, “but one of the greatest of all time. These aren’t just Negro League stats. They’re major-league baseball stats.

“This means so much for not only the Josh Gibson family, but representing the 2,300 men in the Negro Leagues who didn’t get the opportunity to play [in the Major Leagues].’’

Major League Baseball wasn’t integrated until 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

But now, for the first time, the Negro League stats from 1920-1948 are incorporated into the official Major League Baseball stats.

Gibson’s .446 batting average for the 1943 Homestead Grays is now the best in MLB history, eclipsing Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy (.440) in 1894, who dropped to third. Fellow Negro Leagues star Charlie “Chino’’ Smith is now second with his .451 batting average in 1929 for the New York Lincoln Giants.

Gibson’s .974 slugging percentage in 1937 shatters Bonds’ .863 mark in 2001. Bonds dropped from first to fifth with Mule Suttles (.877), Gibson (.871, 1943) and Smith (.870, 1929) ahead of him.

Gibson’s OPS of 1.474 in 1937 and 1.435 in 1943 now rank as the top two single season marks ahead of Bonds’ 1.421 in 2004.

Gibson also moves into third place in the all-time single season on-base percentage category with .564 in 1943, behind Bonds’ .609 in 2004.

While Gibson’s Hall of Fame plaque reads that he hit nearly 800 home runs, his actual total is 238, still the highest in Negro Leagues history. That's because statisticians counted exhibitions and barnstorming tours to his total.

“You hear about all of the home runs,’’ Sean Gibson said, “but when the stats came in, he’s not in the home run conversation, but all of the other conversations about what a great all-around player he is. The numbers don’t lie.’’

Now that these available new statistics validate Gibson’s greatness, Sean Gibson is hoping that the Baseball Writers Association names the league’s Most Valuable Player Awards in Gibson’s honor.

The MVP award used to be named after former MLB commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, but his name was stripped off the plaque in 2020 after former MVP winners Barry Larkin, Terry Pendleton and Mike Schmidt voiced their discomfort. Landis was MLB’s first commissioner from 1920 to 1944 and baseball was not integrated until three years after his death.

“How ironic would it be for Josh Gibson to replace the man who denied more than 2,300 men the opportunity to play baseball in the major leagues,’’ Sean Gibson said. “I’m hoping with these stats that we can change it to the Josh Gibson MVP award. These stats make a great case for it to be named in his honor.’’

The integrated statistics also enhance the numbers produced by several Hall of Famers who played in the Negro Leagues like Mays, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Satchel Paige, Monte Irvin, Roy Campanella, Willard Brown and Minnie Minoso.

Paige now has the third-best single season ERA at 1.01 in 1944 for the Kansas City Monarchs, with his career victory total jumping from 28 to 124.

Mays now has 3,293 career hits from playing in 1948 with the Birmingham Black Barons, which could increase once his numbers are verified from his time playing in the Negro Leagues in 1949 and 1950.

Robinson now has 49 more hits after playing for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1945, giving him a total of 1,567 hits.

Minoso’s 150 hits with the New York Cubans puts him over the 2,000-hit threshold with a total of 2,113.

Others who jumped into the top 10 of MLB’s career leaderboards:

  • Batting average: Oscar Charleston (.363), Jud Wilson (.350), Turkey Stearns (.348) and Buck Leonard (.345).
  • Slugging percentage: Mule Suttles (.621), Stearnes (.616), and Charleston (.614).
  • On-base percentage: Leonard (.452), Charleston (.449) and Wilson (.434).
  • OPS: Charleston (1.063), Leonard (1.042), Stearnes (1.033) and Suttles (1.031).
  • Earned run average: Dave Brown (2.24 ERA), who ranks eighth.

“This is a great day for all of the Negro League players,’’ Gibson said. “We’re so excited by this. Hopefully, one day, we can have a national Negro Leagues Day where every MLB player will wear a Negro Leagues uniform.’’

Gibson has requested the date to be May 2, commemorating the first Negro Leagues games in 1920.

“It’s not to take anything away from Jackie Robinson Day,’’ Gibson said, “but it would be nice to celebrate all Negro League players and not just one person.’’

Seatrium reports net order book of S$25.8B in 1QFY2024; S$11.4B in order year-to-date

S INGAPORE: Seatrium Limited, a global provider of engineering solutions to the offshore, marine, and energy industries, reported a net book order of S$25.8 billion in its business update for the first quarter of 2024.

The order comprised 31 projects with deliveries until 2030. In its latest business update for 1QFY2024, Seatrium outlined its strategic roadmap for FY2024, focusing on improving financial performance.

To achieve this, the group has identified several key areas, including implementing cost-saving initiatives to drive a leaner cost structure and executing the order book safely, timely, and on budget.

Seatrium also aims to pursue new business opportunities, expand its pipeline, and secure lucrative order wins.

It also adopts a proactive approach to capital management, strategically optimising its financial resources to maximise shareholder value and sustain a strong balance sheet.

The company’s strong year–to–date performance also includes a notable new order of over $11.4 billion.

This is spearheaded by the $11 billion contract to build two floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, platforms P-84 and P-85, for Petrobras.

Other new orders include the Sparta FPU newbuild for Shell Inc, topsides integration contract from MODEC for the Errea Wittu FPSO, and topsides fabrication and integration contract from SBM Offshore for the Jaguar FPSO.

“We are honoured to be selected by Petrobras through a rigorous tender process to supply the P-84 and P-85 FPSO vessels, solidifying our position as the preferred partner for transformative projects.

Through the One Seatrium Delivery Model, we are integrated globally to deliver cost-effective, value-added solutions to our esteemed customers.

Leveraging our worldwide engineering, procurement and project management expertise in close collaboration with our customers, we will create quality assets with the highest safety standards and a lower carbon footprint, shaping the industry for a greener future,” expressed Mr Chris Ong, CEO of Seatrium when the company announced the Petrobras project on May 25.

The supply of the FPSO platforms will leverage the company’s ‘One Seatrium Delivery Model,’ in which operations and engineering support are integrated across different yards globally.

Seatrium’s facilities in Brazil, China, and Singapore will manufacture the modules, which weigh an impressive 60,000 metric tonnes.

The outsourced hull and accommodation will be transported to Singapore for topside module integration and commissioning.

During the first quarter of 2024, Seatrium successfully delivered Brassavola, Singapore’s first membrane liquified natural (LNG) gas bunker vessel, to owner Indah Singa Maritime Pte. Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K Lines, completed 67 repairs and upgrade projects.

Brassavola uses dual-fuel engines, allowing the vessel to run on marine LNG for cleaner and lower-carbon operation. The vessel’s advanced reliquefaction technology also enables more efficient boil-off gas management, which reduces carbon emissions.

Seatrium also secured a S$400 committed green revolving loan facility from UOB to support its business growth in offshore renewables by financing green and environmentally sustainable projects.

This is on top of the S$2 billion in sustainability-linked loans and green financing the company secured last year. It has set a 40% target of its net order book to comprise cleaner or greener solutions and renewable energy sources by 2030.

Seatrium also reported that it has completed the early redemption of its S$500 million floating rate bonds due in 2026 and divested the Batangas Yard in the Philippines.

During its Investor Day in March, the group unveiled its long-term sustainable targets of at least S$1 billion or more in EBITDA and ROE of 8% or higher.

This includes a net leverage of two to three times or lower, on a through-cycle basis, by FY2028 or earlier.

Romance Writer Group Is Bankrupt After DEI Fight Decimates Ranks

By Jonathan Randles

Jonathan Randles

A professional organization for romance authors filed bankruptcy, blaming the high cost of its annual conference and a membership crisis triggered by the suspension of a prominent writer who accused another member of allegedly using racist stereotypes in her book.

Romance Writers of America Inc. filed Chapter 11 on Wednesday saying it lost thousands of members in recent years and can’t cover expenses related to keynote conferences it planned to hold at Marriott hotels in Philadelphia and Austin.

The nonprofit trade association said it already has a plan to get out of bankruptcy and intends to distribute its disposable income to the hotels and other creditors.

RWA was embroiled in controversy after it suspended Courtney Milan, a romance author and former board member, in late 2019. Milan criticized another writer’s book for using racist stereotypes and RWA’s response resulted in widespread backlash, with the phrase #IStandWithCourtney trending on Twitter, according to Vox.

The association didn’t reference Milan in court papers Wednesday. But its filing said its membership dropped to 3,000 members from roughly 10,000 “predominantly due to disputes concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion issues between some members of a prior RWA board and others in the larger romance writing community.”

The Covid-19 pandemic also contributed to a decline in membership which hurt RWA’s finances, according to court documents.

The organization had entered into agreements with conference centers in 2018 to hold its keynote event through 2026, current RWA President Mary Ann Jock said in a court filing. It ended up filing Chapter 11 because the Philadelphia Marriott recently accelerated obligations under an existing conference agreement, demanding immediate payment of $1 million, which the association can’t afford, she said.

Carollynn H.G. Callari, RWA’s lawyer, said the organization doesn’t expect bankruptcy to impact its day-to-day operations. The Chapter 11 filing was necessary to restructure the group’s legacy obligations, including its conference contracts, she added.

RWA has “dedicated time and resources in recent years to improving the diversity and equity represented in our membership and programming, and will continue to do so to ensure members’ needs are met with respect and responsiveness,” Callari said in a written statement.

RWA said it reconstituted its board in 2021, in an effort to address DEI issues. Incorporated in 1981, RWA provides networking opportunities for romance writers.

The case is Romance Writers of America Inc., case number 24-32447 , in the US Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of Texas.
