Mysteries Of Flight: The Curious Case Of Pan Am Flight 914

The airliner took off from New York City in 1955 and landed in Venezuela in 1985, or was it 1992? We get to the bottom of it!

By Plane & Pilot Updated April 1, 2022 Save Article

A Pan Am DC-4, similar to the one in this photo, was said to have disappeared for decades only to reappear under strange circumstances. Nothing about the story, however, adds up.

The Mystery

Pan Am Flight 914 was a Douglas DC-4 with 57 passengers and six crew members that took off from a New York City airport headed for Miami, Florida. The date was July 2, 1955. The flight was scheduled to last a couple of hours, but it never arrived in Miami. Instead, it showed up, unannounced and invisible to Caracas radar, on March 9, 1985! Voicing his concerns to the tower, the pilot, after a textbook landing, taxied toward the gate, and ground handlers could see the faces of the screaming passengers pressed up against their windows, looking at a fantastic new world. The pilot, for his part, dropped a small calendar out the window before he made a hasty turn back to the runway, where he took off and disappeared as suddenly as he had arrived. And the calendar? Did he drop it accidentally? Or does it hold the secret to what happened? What exactly did it say?

We might never know. The governments of both Venezuela and the United States, the story goes, were said to have seized the calendar and the tower tapes and have refused to comment on the incident even once in the intervening decades. What really happened to Flight 914?

It is, for once, a mystery that has an answer.

The Theories

The story has been going around the internet for years and is a hot forum topic with the UFO and time-traveling crowd.

The most popular theory is that the plane passed through some kind of time portal or wormhole, and instead of landing in Miami in 1955, it appeared on arrival in Venezuela 30 years later. One supposes it went back through the wormhole after it left Caracas. Exactly how wormholes or time portals work isn’t well understood, apparently.

As you’ve hopefully already figured out, the story of Pan Am Flight 914 was a total fabrication. But in this case, unlike with many urban legends, the source of that fabrication is known.

It dates to a story first published in 1985 by the Weekly World News , the onetime tabloid ( now website ), which specializes in crazy, concocted stories like this one. The paper ran the story again twice in the 1990s (with the plane’s arrival date changed to 1992 in those later stories).

The tale got a huge boost when YouTube channel Bright Side put out a video about the disappearance . The snappily produced video has gotten more than 15 million views, but it doesn’t get to the fact that it was a fake tabloid story until about two-thirds through. Bright Side introduced a number of   “details” that were not in the first Weekly World News story, including the fact that the plane was visible on radar. In any case, the video reveals that the story is a hoax only well toward the end.

It’s likely that others capitalized on this real-life fake news to share the story without adding that one pertinent detail, the one about how everyone knew all along the whole thing was a fanciful fabrication. It all goes to show how fascinated people are by airplanes, even when the story is concocted to create a paranormal sensation.

Did a Plane Disappear and Land 37 Years Later?

Armed with facts, we find that the mystery of pan am flight 914 isn't much of a mystery., published july 1, 2019.

False

About this rating

The strange story of Pan Am Flight 914 is frequently shared by UFO blogs and conspiracy-minded websites as if it has been stumping the experts for decades. This "unsolved" event reportedly involves a plane that took off from New York in 1955 with 57 passengers, disappeared for 37 years, then reappeared and landed in Miami as if nothing had happened.

Various solutions have been offered to explain the riddle of Pan Am Flight 914, the most popular of which is that this plane flew through some sort of time-travel portal. The actual explanation is a bit more mundane: The saga of Pan Am Flight 914 is a work of fiction that originated with Weekly World News, a notorious tabloid that operated between 1979 and 2007 (the tabloid would later relaunch as an online-only publication).

In June 2019, the YouTube page "Bright Side" renewed interest in this "mystery" with a viral video that has garnered more than 5 million views:

The first seven minutes of this nine-minute video deal with the mystery supposedly surrounding the saga of Pan Am Flight 914. It isn't until minute seven that Bright Side mentions the possibility that this story could be a work of fiction. Judging by the influx in queries we received about this topic at the end of June 2019, we're guessing many viewers didn't watch the entire film.

The story of Pan Am Flight 914 does not begin at a New York airport in 1955. It actually starts with an article published in Weekly World News three decades later:

flight 914 movie review

Weekly World News was an infamous tabloid known for publishing fantastically fictitious stories, such as this bit about a time traveler getting busted for insider trading, this story about a man suing himself after hitting himself with a boomerang , and these doctored images of " giant " skeletons. In other words, Weekly World News isn't exactly a reputable source of news.

Weekly World News republished this story at least two more times, once in 1993 and again in 1999 . Curiously, the publication used two different photographs of two different men as if they showed "eye-witness" air-traffic controller Juan de la Corte:

Similar to today's misinformation purveyors, Weekly World News had the habit of using unrelated photographs to illustrate their stories. The image of the plane in this article, for instance, does not show Pan Am Flight 914 landing in Miami after 37 years. This is actually a stock photograph available via Alamy, which lists the plane as a DC-4:

Lastly, we searched through newspaper archives for any contemporary articles relating to the disappearance of a plane. Unsurprisingly, we were unable to locate any credible news accounts about the disappearance of Pan Am Flight 914.

Fans of the science-fiction TV series "Twilight Zone" may have experienced some déjà vu while reading this story. While the fictional story of Pan Am Flight 914 originated with the tabloid Weekly World News, it is reminiscent of a 1961 episode of the sci-fi show entitled "The Odyssey Of Flight 33."

In the vast realm of urban legends and conspiracy theories, one story has captured the imaginations of many: the mystery of Pan Am Flight 914. This enigmatic tale revolves around a Douglas DC-4 aircraft that vanished during a flight from New York to Miami in 1955, only to reappear inexplicably in Caracas, Venezuela, thirty years later. With its intriguing twists and turns, the story has become a hot topic among UFO enthusiasts and time-travel believers. In this article, we will delve deep into the mystery of Pan Am Flight 914, debunk some misconceptions, and explore the true origins of this fascinating urban legend.

Pan Am flight 914 - https:::commons.wikimedia.org:wiki:File:Pan_Am_DC4_Cipper

The Vanishing Flight

On July 2, 1955, Pan Am Flight 914 set off from a New York City airport, carrying 57 passengers and six crew members on board. The flight was scheduled to land in Miami, Florida, within a couple of hours. However, as the aircraft approached its destination, something inexplicable happened. Miami radar detected no approaching aircraft, and there were no distress calls received. Pan Am Flight 914 seemingly disappeared from radar without any contact. The prevailing belief was that the plane had crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Mysterious Reappearance

Fast forward 37 years to March 9, 1985, when an astonishing event occurred. Out of nowhere, Pan Am Flight 914 resurfaced on radar, approaching the Caracas airport in Venezuela. As the pilot skillfully landed the aircraft, ground handlers were astounded to see the faces of the passengers pressed against the windows, staring out at a world that had drastically changed. However, before anyone could comprehend what was happening, the pilot swiftly taxied back to the runway, took off, and vanished once again into thin air. The sudden reappearance and disappearance of the flight left many bewildered and searching for answers.

Rumors swirled around an air traffic controller at Caracas Simon Bolivar International Airport, and somehow the United States and Venzuelan governments co-conspiring to eliminate evidence of the event.  That’s how the legend goes anyway.

The Time-Traveling Theory

Numerous theories have emerged over the years to explain the inexplicable events surrounding Pan Am Flight 914. The most popular hypothesis suggests that the aircraft somehow passed through a time portal or wormhole, transporting it from 1955 to 1985. According to this theory, the passengers and crew experienced a time jump, finding themselves in a future they could not comprehend. The exact mechanics of how such time portals or wormholes work remain largely unknown, adding an air of mystery to the story.

More or less, this is the basis of the television show, Manifest. For those who have been puzzled by the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, this tale seems plausible, though the triangle seems to have all but vanished in modern times.

The Twilight Zone Connection

Interestingly, the story of Pan Am Flight 914 bears a striking resemblance to an episode of the classic television series The Twilight Zone . The episode titled “Odyssey of Flight 33” follows a similar narrative, where a commercial airliner travels back in time during a routine flight. The Weekly World News even acknowledged this connection, paying homage to the renowned series created by Rod Serling.

Unveiling the Truth

As captivating as the story of Pan Am Flight 914 may be, it is crucial to separate fact from fiction. In this case, the origin of the tale can be traced back to a tabloid named the Weekly World News . In 1985, this publication first published the fabricated story, capturing the attention of readers with its sensationalized narrative. The Weekly World News ran the story twice more in the 1990s, altering the arrival date to 1992 in subsequent versions. The fabricated account of Pan Am Flight 914 gained further traction when a YouTube channel called Bright Side released a video discussing the supposed disappearance. However, the video only revealed the truth towards the end, leaving viewers captivated by the hoax until then.

To be clear, there was never a missing Pan Am Flight 914. The entire story was a fabrication.

The Influence of Fake News

The power of fake news and sensationalized stories cannot be underestimated but it’s nothing new. Pan Am Flight 914 serves as a prime example of how such tales can captivate and deceive audiences. The allure of a paranormal sensation combined with the fascination people have for aviation contributed to the story’s popularity. Unfortunately, the misinformation spread by the Weekly World News and subsequent channels led many to believe in the existence of a mysterious flight that had disappeared and reappeared.

It wasn’t the greatest hoax ever constructed but it was fairly sturdy over time and still comes up from time to time as a factual story.

The Enduring Fascination

Despite the truth behind Pan Am Flight 914, the enduring fascination with the story remains. The allure of time travel, the unknown, and the inexplicable continues to capture the imagination of many. This urban legend serves as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the human desire to uncover mysteries beyond our comprehension. While Pan Am Flight 914 may be a work of fiction, it reminds us of the vast possibilities that lie within the realm of our imagination.

Pan Am Flight 914 has captivated audiences for decades with its tale of a vanished aircraft reappearing in a different time. However, the true origins of the story lie in the realm of fabricated news and sensationalized narratives. The Weekly World News created a captivating tale that resonated with readers, leading to its perpetuation in various forms over the years. While the story may be a work of fiction, it serves as a reminder of humanity’s enduring fascination with the unknown and our innate desire to unravel the mysteries of our world and beyond.

For what it’s worth, today has been 38 years since the last purported appearance which was 37 after it took off. Maybe we should have looked for it to reappear last year?

What do you think? Have you heard about this hoax?

flight 914 movie review

Now streaming on:

After opening with one of the most terrifying flying scenes I've witnessed, in which an airplane is saved by being flown upside down, Robert Zemeckis ' "Flight" segues into a brave and tortured performance by Denzel Washington — one of his very best. Not often does a movie character make such a harrowing personal journey that keeps us in deep sympathy all of the way.

Washington plays Whip Whitaker, a veteran commercial airlines pilot who over the years has built up a shaky tolerance for quantities of alcohol and cocaine that would be lethal for most people. At the film opens, he's finishing an all-night party with a friendly flight attendant named Katerina ( Nadine Velazquez ) and jolts himself back into action with two lines of cocaine. His co-pilot ( Brian Geraghty ) eyes him suspiciously, but Whip projects poise and authority from behind his dark aviator glasses.

Their flight takes off in a disturbing rainstorm and encounters the kind of turbulence that has the co-pilot crying out, "Oh, Lord!" But Whip powers them at high speed into an area of clear sky, before a mechanical malfunction sends the aircraft into an uncontrollable nosedive. Zemeckis and his team portray the terror in the cabin in stomach-churning style. Acting on instinct, seeming cool as ice, the veteran pilot inverts the plane to halt its descent, and it flies level upside-down until he rights it again to glide into a level crash-landing in an open field.

The field, as it happens, is next to a little church, and the way Zemeckis portrays an outdoor baptism on the ground below captures the hyper-realism with which I imagine we notice things when we think we're about to die. Only six people do die in the crash, and Whittaker is hailed as a hero.

Will this close call bring an end to his drinking? He retreats to his grandfather's farm where he was raised, pours out all his booze and is dry for a time — until he's told by his union representative ( Bruce Greenwood ) and his lawyer ( Don Cheadle ), that blood tests show he was flying drunk. A government hearing is fraught with hazard (he faces a possible life sentence). Meanwhile, he is befriended by a woman named Nicole ( Kelly Reilly ), who he met in the hospital, and she takes him to an AA meeting, but the program is not for him.

It becomes clear that intoxication is more important to Whip than anything else; it cost him a marriage and the respect of his son. One of the most effective things in Washington's performance is the way he puts up an impassive facade to conceal his defiant addiction. "No one else could have landed that plane!" he insists, and indeed tests in a flight simulator back him up. The fact remains that he was stoned.

One of the most gripping scenes takes place in a hotel room where Whittaker is being held essentially under guard for the week before his official hearing. At a crucial moment, his drug supplier Harling Mays ( John Goodman ) turns up, marching toward camera in one of a series of garish Hawaiian shirts, ready to battle a crisis. I don't have any idea if cocaine can snap you back from a killer hangover, but I wouldn't count on it.

Denzel Washington is one of the most sympathetic and rock-solid of actors, and it's effective here how his performance never goes over the top but instead is grounded on obsessive control. There are many scenes inviting emotional displays. A lesser actor might have wanted to act them out. Washington depends on his eyes, his manner and a gift for projecting inner emotion. In the way it meets every requirement of a tricky plot, this is an ideal performance.

Among the supporting performances, Don Cheadle projects guarded motivations, Greenwood is a loyal friend, Goodman seems like a handy medic, and Brian Geraghty's panic in the co-pilot's seat underlines the horror. "Flight," a title with more than one meaning, is strangely the first live-action feature in 12 years by Robert Zemeckis, who seemed committed to stop-motion animation (" Beowulf ," " The Polar Express ," " Disney's A Christmas Carol "). It is nearly flawless. I can think of another final line of dialogue for Whip Whitaker's character ("My name is Whip, and I'm an alcoholic"), but that's just me.

The story of an American plane reappearing after 37 years is a myth

A post shared more than 75,000 times on facebook in kenya and india claims that a plane that went missing in 1955 appeared again 37 years later. the claim is false; this story was first published in an american tabloid known for its fictitious stories. furthermore, in the video accompanying the post, the narrator notes that the story is likely a myth..

The title of the Facebook post published on March 5, 2021, reads: “A Missing Plane From 1955 Landed After 37 Years. Here’s What Happened.”

The text is accompanied by a video that claims Pan Am Flight 914 took off from New York in 1955, slipped from radar and then vanished, until its unexplained return 37 years later when it landed in Miami, Florida.

flight 914 movie review

The story originated in an article published in May 1985 in the Weekly World News , an American print-based tabloid that was in circulation between 1979 and 2007. It relaunched online in 2009.

flight 914 movie review

However, the story of Pan Am Flight 914, much like other tales published by The Weekly World News, is bogus.

Snopes previously debunked the story in 2019, the same year that a YouTube page called “Bright Side” breathed new life into the myth when it published a viral video  that has been viewed more than 19.2 million times.

Even the video itself casts doubt, with the narrator noting after seven minutes of rehashing the claim that “the story just seems to be an elaborate fabrication”.

Different photos claiming to show the same man

The Weekly World News published its story twice more ( here and here ) in the years that followed, using two different photographs of two different men named as “eyewitness” air traffic controller, Juan de la Corte.

flight 914 movie review

Article used a stock photo

A reverse image search shows that the picture of the plane used by the Weekly World News is actually a stock photograph  on Alamy of a DC-4  sporting the livery of rival airline TWA in about 1935.

And not only are there no credible news reports to support the claim, but there is also no mention of the flight in the US department of transport’s records of investigations into aircraft accidents from 1934 to 1965.

Flight review

Besides Mohit Chadda and a potentially great concept, Flight has barely anything that is worthy of a watch, says Prateek Sur.

flight 914 movie review

Flight is about a billionaire (Mohit Chadda) who is caught in the midst of a public relations crisis.

A plane manufactured by his aviation company crashes and the entire blame falls on his company. When he decides to be the good Samaritan and compensate the families who lost their loved ones in the crash, he finds himself at odds with his board of directors.

He decides to head to Dubai in order to make things right, and apologise to the public at a press conference. So he takes a chartered flight only to find that he has been trapped there mid-air just to die.

Who is behind this attempt on his life?

Can he save himself?

Will he end up exposing the bad guys and making his company come out victorious in the public eye?

First up, Mohit Chadda has indeed put his heart and soul into the film. Not only as the co-producer and co-writer of the film but also as the leading man.

When I first saw the trailer, I was intrigued by the idea.

After watching the film, I feel a major reason why it isn't bad is Mohit Chadda.

He has perfectly embodied that image of a spoilt brat who inherits a billion dollar business and is now trying to make sure his father's values and ethics are not watered down.

Mohit flirts with women and comes out as the guy who thinks he is the most handsome person in the room. Trying to be Harvey Specter, eh?

The plot of the movie will intrigue you in a one-liner.

A person trapped in a flight without a pilot is a sure shot winner of a concept.

But Suraj Joshi's lacklustre direction makes Flight a bore.

Mohit is caught inside the flight, but he isn't even panicking.

He is cool enough to have drinks, play golf, record messages for his girlfriend, etc.

He is waiting for the moment he is able to enter the cockpit and save his life by getting the flight to do some unimaginable stunts.

Well, as an audience, even you are waiting for that first half to end so that there is at least something thrilling in this movie.

Popular character artistes like Pavan Malhotra, Zakir Hussain and Viveck Vaswani have been totally wasted and it seems they have just said yes to the film as a favour.

Shibani Bedi, who is usually able to steal the scene even in a one-minute performance, isn't able to do so, thanks to the insipid writing.

Popular RJ and former Bigg Boss contestant Pritam Singh has a blink-and-a-miss performance. His character could have been brought back in the second half and made the plot more interesting,.

While the makers promised that the film has been shot to an extent on a real plane, but watching the movie, everything looks like added up on VFX.

Some of the blast scenes and the flight scenes have such bad VFX that it feels as the makers wanted to make budget cuts.

Above all the other flaws, the film basically says that it won't listen to any laws of physics. Now I know that auto-pilot is a function that pilots use but, it isn't something that would take the flight from India to Somalia to Abu Dhabi to Dubai!

To add to that, if learning how to fly a plane was as easy as it has been shown in the film, I am sure the training courses of pilots wouldn't cost so much.

Mohit Chaddha not only learns how to fly a plane but even manages to do stunts with it in less than half an hour of flying experience!

Even if I try to overlook all this as cinematic liberties, how can one see a plane flying in the air for almost three-four hours with a gigantic hole on its surface?

Besides Mohit Chadda and a potentially great concept, Flight has barely anything that is worthy of a watch.
