About Theses and Dissertations

A dissertation or thesis is a document submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings.  (International Standard ISO 7144: Documentation — Presentation of theses and similar documents ).

For most universities in the U.S., dissertation is the term for the required submission for the PhD, and thesis refers only to the master's degree requirement.

Other Universities

T he best source to find theses is ProQuest Dissertations & Thesis Global .  Policies regarding theses and dissertation collections largely vary between universities.  So check the library website of the university of interest.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon theses are now ONLINE and can be searched through the ProQuest database Dissertations & Theses @ Carnegie Mellon University that enables access to citations and abstracts of all dissertations and theses, as well as the fulltext in PDF format.  Scroll down and select Dissertations & Theses, then do a regular search. Print versions are also available in the libraries collection.

The Carnegie Mellon Library catalog , uses the term THESIS to denote both masters' theses and dissertations.  However, the number of master's theses is limited.  Within the libraries, theses are located in designated areas and are shelved in alphabetical order by the author's last name.  The catalog treats theses and dissertations like books and they can be borrowed as such.  Theses may be in print, microfiche, or microform.

  • In the catalog use the Advanced Search :  search by author, title, or keyword limiting to type THESIS.
  • For a list of theses from a specific department, use Advanced Search to combine a keyword search for the name of the department with location THESES.  E.g., search for "Dept. of Computer Science" with THESES as the location.
  • For a reasonably complete list of theses at Carnegie Mellon, use Advanced Search to search Carnegie Mellon University Dissertations in the Subject line.

Other Countries

Center for Research Libraries:  Foreign Doctoral Dissertations CRL has more than 800,000 cataloged foreign doctoral dissertations from more than 90 countries and over 1200 institutions.

CSUF Dissertations & Theses

A  thesis , commonly required to obtain a master's degree, is supposed to test a student's understanding of his or her field of study. A  dissertation  is written by a doctorate student and focuses on original research.

Dissertations and theses are scholarly sources and examples of grey literature ( or gray literature ).  Grey literature is material that has not been published through traditional means and generally does not go through a peer‐review process.

1.  How do I write a thesis at CSUF? (Deadlines, awards, etc.) 2. CSUF Thesis/Dissertation Manual 3.  How do I find a CSUF thesis? 4.  More on dissertations, theses, and projects  (ARCHIVED CATALOG) 5 . Developing strong thesis statements 6.  Attend a thesis retreat at CSUF

Searching for a Dissertation/Thesis,

1. Look in our catalog if its from CSUF

2. Look in resources (right side)

3. Look in open access repositories at university libraries websites where the dissertation/thesis was written - may provide full access

4. Try contacting author or advisor of dissertation/thesis for a copy

5. If you cannot find the dissertation/thesis, try requesting it (free of charge) from  interlibrary loan

Computer engineering thesis option - handbook.

The thesis option is the most traditional Master’s degree track in which a student will perform research, develop and write a thesis, and defend their ideas in a dissertation. This track is ideal for students wishing to continue for a Ph.D. degree.

Overview of the MS Computer Engineering Thesis Option

This schedule summarizes the requirements and due dates for the MS Degree – Thesis Option. Students who have not completed requirements or submitted required forms to the Graduate Coordinator by the due dates may be dropped from the program. Students should graduate in the semester in which 30 hours of coursework are completed. All students who are on visas must be registered for at least 9 credit hours of coursework in every semester (excluding summer), including their final semester, unless they receive permission from the Department Graduate Committee prior to the beginning of the semester.

Program of Study - Coursework Requirements and Criteria

Program of Study

After consulting with the approved supervisory committee chair, the student must plan a program of study. They must complete and submit the Program of Study Form by the drop deadline of the second semester of study. After approval of the Department Graduate Committee, the program of study is submitted to the Graduate School for their approval. In preparation to submit a Program of Study form, it is recommended that students use the  MS Electrical Engineering checklist and/or meet with the Graduate Coordinator .

Modifications to the Program of Study may be made by re-submitting a Program of Study Form for approval prior to registering for added courses with the supervisory committee and obtaining required approval before enrollment in any added courses. Completed courses cannot be removed from the program of study. Credit towards obtaining a degree will not be granted for classes taken prior to approval of the form, unless the student is changing degree status.

Requirements

Master of Science Electrical Engineering students should graduate in the semester in which 32 hours of coursework are completed. All students who are on visas must be registered for at least 9 credit hours of coursework in every semester (excluding summer) unless they receive permission from the Department Graduate Committee prior to the beginning of the semester.

All coursework is to be completed within 4 consecutive calendar years . Coursework listed on the program of study must total a minimum of 32 hours of graduate coursework including:

  • CS/ECE 6710 Digital VLSI Design (4.0 credit hours)
  • CS/ECE 6810 Computer Architecture (3.0 credit hours)
  • 2 Restricted Elective List courses – see list below
  • Up to 12 credit hours of 5000-7000 level allied courses will be accepted (Math, Science, or other Engineering courses)
  • A minimum of 18 hours of ECE courses must be at the 6000 or 7000 level
  • Students may only register for thesis research after they have set up a supervisory committee and met with the Graduate Coordinator

Additional Criteria

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on coursework listed on the program of study with no grade lower than C- is required for graduation. A student who receives a grade lower than C- in a course listed on the program of study must repeat that same course and receive a higher grade. Courses cannot be removed from the program of study after they are taken.
  • Students who receive an “Incomplete” grade in a class must complete the class by the following semester, even if the semester is the summer semester.
  • Coursework cannot be used for more than one degree on the same level.
  • Cross-listed courses must be registered through the ECE course numbers.
  • Where a course has both a 5000- and 6000-level number, the 5000-level version is intended for undergraduates and the 6000-level version for honors and graduate students. The two versions of the class will meet together, but extra work will be expected of honors and graduate students.

Additional courses on the program of study must be approved by the student’s committee.

Supervisory Committee

A student’s supervisory committee will guide the student’s graduate program and must be selected by the beginning of the second semester of study. If a student does not choose a committee, they will be placed with the default supervisory committee.

A supervisory committee consists of three faculty members. The chair of the committee is chosen by the student, and the two remaining members are assigned by the Graduate Committee.  Typically, the other members include one member from the Graduate Committee and the Department Associate Chair.

Any regular Electrical & Computer Engineering faculty member may serve as a supervisory committee chair. After the faculty member has agreed to chair a supervisory committee, the student should submit a completed Request for Supervisory Committee . The form can be re-submitted if an amendment needs to be made to the committee. The Graduate Committee approves all supervisory committee forms; final approval is granted by the Graduate School.

Report of Final Examination (Thesis)

Students must be registered for at least 3 credit hours in the semester in which they take an exam. The Research Comprehensive Exam and Final Oral Exam (oral thesis defense) may not be done during the same semester.

Research Comprehensive Examination (Thesis Proposal) M.S. candidates must take a Research Comprehensive Examination (thesis proposal) to be administered by their supervisory committee at a time determined by that committee, but no later than the third semester of study.

The candidate writes a proposal on their research in the NSF or NIH format which would include only the technical proposal and the vita sections. The page limit for the proposal should be 10 pages for M.S. students. The choice of which format to use would be based on the area of research. The faculty advisor would help the student choose. The following are the links to the NSF and NIH websites for their format information.

  • NSF Preparing your Proposal
  • NSF Grant Proposal Guide

This proposal should be submitted to the members of the candidate’s supervisory committee at least 2 weeks before the comprehensive exam.

Students must notify the ECE Graduate Coordinator at least four weeks before they are going to take the Research Comprehensive Examination. The Graduate Coordinator will inform the Graduate School after the exam has been taken.

Final Exam (Thesis Defense)

The Final Oral Examination (oral thesis defense) is conducted by the supervisory committee according to Graduate School regulations. A student will be passed only if the committee is satisfied that the thesis research and documentation are unquestionably of the quality that will bring distinction to the candidate and the department . The committee may request further work of the candidate before a final decision is made.

All students must understand that they are responsible for ensuring that the submitted thesis meets the requirements of the Graduate School for proper format. Ample help is available from the Graduate School Thesis and Dissertation Editor in the form of a Handbook for Theses and Dissertations as well as seminars. Theses with improper format will be rejected. When students send a draft to their committee, they must also upload their thesis for Preliminary Review to the Graduate School.

The student must contact the ECE Graduate Coordinator at least four weeks prior to the exam for assistance to schedule the date, time and location with the student’s Supervisory Committee. At least one week before the exam the student must provide the Graduate Coordinator with a copy of the abstract and title of the thesis. A Report of the Final Oral Examination and Thesis for the Master’s Degree form will be completed by the Graduate Coordinator for approval signatures during the defense and then submitted to the Graduate School.

Thesis Requirements

The supervisory committee must give preliminary approval of the thesis prior to the defense. The defense can be scheduled after this approval. The student must provide one copy of the thesis to the chair of the supervisory committee at least three weeks before the defense, and one copy to each of the other committee members at least two weeks prior to the defense.

After successfully defending the thesis, the student must upload the final version of their thesis to the Graduate School. You will be required to know the UNIDs of each of your faculty members. If you do not have these, you can contact the Graduate Coordinator .

Detailed policies and procedures concerning the thesis are contained in A Handbook for Theses and Dissertations published by the Graduate School.

Software, Programming and Algorithm Dissertation Topics

In layman language, the software is collectively known as the “combination of operating information and all the programs that are being used by the computer.” It is a set of instructions to direct computers to perform a specific task depending upon thususer’s instructions.

The software can be written in both high and low-level languages. Low-level language is also known as machine code and is faster because it doesn’t require any compiler and directly communicates with the computer. A high-level language is pretty similar to a human language, and therefore can be easily understood by the developers. High-level language requires the compiler to translate commands to the computer.

Programming and algorithms can be termed as commands given to the computer to perform actions. Programming leads to executable programs from a computing problem and involves developing, generating, and analysing algorithms. Algorithms refer to an act done involving a step-by-step process to solve a problem. It is a set of logic written in software.

There are two types of software; operating software that helps in operation and system software necessary to run a system. Operating software can be rewritten and changed according to demand, but system software cannot be altered. If developers require any alterations, they would have to develop new software.

There are various topics that can be considered for  research dissertation purposes  under this theme, a list of which is given below.

Athanasios Bacharis

Athanasios Bacharis headshot

Bacharis’ work centers around the robot-vision area, focusing on making autonomous robots act on visual information. His research includes active vision approaches, namely, view planning and next-best-view, to tackle the problem of 3D reconstruction via different optimization frameworks. The acquisition of 3D information is crucial for automating tasks, and active vision methods obtain it via optimal inference. Areas of impact include agriculture and healthcare, where 3D models can lead to reduced use of fertilizers via phenotype analysis of crops and effective management of cancer treatments. Bacharis has a strong publication record, with two peer-reviewed conference papers and one journal paper already published. He also has one conference paper under review and two journal papers in the submission process. His publications are featured in prestigious robotic and automation venues, further demonstrating his expertise and the relevance of his research in the field.

Karin de Langis

Karin de Langis headshot

Karin's thesis works at the intersection of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and cognitive science. Her work uses eye-tracking and other cognitive signals to improve NLP systems in their performance and cognitive interpretability, and to create NLP systems that process language more similarly to humans. Her human-centric approach to NLP is motivated by the possibility of addressing the shortcomings of current statistics-based NLP systems, which often become stuck on explainability and interpretability, resulting in potential biases. This work has most recently been accepted and presented at SIGNLL Conference on Computational Natural Language Learning (CoNLL) conference which has a special focus on theoretically, cognitively and scientifically motivated approaches to computational linguistics.

Arshia Zernab Hassan

Arshia Zernab Hassan headshot

Hassan's thesis work delves into developing computational methods for interpreting data from genome wide CRISPR/Cas9 screens. CRISPR/Cas9 is a new approach for genome editing that enables precise, large-scale editing of genomes and construction of mutants in human cells. These are powerful data for inferring functional relationships among genes essential for cancer growth. Moreover, chemical-genetic CRISPR screens, where population of mutant cells are grown in the presence of chemical compounds, help us understand the effect the chemicals have on cancer cells and formulate precise drug solutions. Given the novelty of these experimental technologies, computational methods to process and interpret the resulting data and accurately quantify the various genetic interactions are still quite limited, and this is where Hassan’s dissertation is focused on. Her research extends to developing deep-learning based methods that leverage CRISPR chemical-genetic and other genomic datasets to predict cancer sensitivity to candidate drugs. Her methods on improving information content in CRISPR screens was published in the Molecular Systems Biology journal, a highly visible journal in the computational biology field.

Xinyue Hu headshot

Hu's Ph.D. dissertation is concentrated on how to effectively leverage the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) – especially deep learning – to tackle challenging and important problems in the design and development of reliable, effective and secure (independent) physical infrastructure networks. More specifically, her research focuses on two critical infrastructures: power grids and communication networks, in particular, emerging 5G networks, both of which not only play a critical role in our daily life but are also vital to the nation’s economic well-being and security. Due to the enormous complexity, diversity, and scale of these two infrastructures, traditional approaches based on (simplified) theoretical models and heuristics-based optimization are no longer sufficient in overcoming many technical challenges in the design and operations of these infrastructures: data-driven machine learning approaches have become increasingly essential. The key question now is: how does one leverage the power of AI/ML without abandoning the rich theory and practical expertise that have accumulated over the years? Hu’s research has pioneered a new paradigm – (domain) knowledge-guided machine learning (KGML) – in tackling challenging and important problems in power grid and communications (e.g., 5G) network infrastructures.

Lucas Kramer

Lucas Kramer headshot

Kramer is now the driving force in designing tools and techniques for building extensible programming languages, with the Minnesota Extensible Language Tools (MELT) group. These are languages that start with a host language such as C or Java, but can then be extended with new syntax (notations) and new semantics (e.g. error-checking analyses or optimizations) over that new syntax and the original host language syntax. One extension that Kramer created was to embed the domain-specific language Halide in MELT's extensible specification of C, called ableC. This extension allows programmers to specify how code working on multi-dimensional matrices is transformed and optimized to make efficient use of hardware. Another embeds the logic-programming language Prolog into ableC; yet another provides a form of nondeterministic parallelism useful in some algorithms that search for a solution in a structured, but very large, search space. The goal of his research is to make building language extensions such as these more practical for non-expert developers.  To this end he has made many significant contributions to the MELT group's Silver meta-language, making it easier for extension developers to correctly specify complex language features with minimal boilerplate. Kramer is the lead author of one journal and four conference papers on his work at the University of Minnesota, winning the distinguished paper award for his 2020 paper at the Software Language Engineering conference, "Strategic Tree Rewriting in Attribute Grammars".

Yijun Lin headshot

Lin’s doctoral dissertation focuses on a timely, important topic of spatiotemporal prediction and forecasting using multimodal and multiscale data. Spatiotemporal prediction and forecasting are important scientific problems applicable to diverse phenomena, such as air quality, ambient noise, traffic conditions, and meteorology. Her work also couples the resulting prediction and forecasting with multimodal (e.g., satellite imagery, street-view photos, census records, and human mobility data) and multiscale geographic information (e.g., census records focusing on small tracts vs. neighborhood surveys) to characterize the natural and built environment, facilitating our understanding of the interactions between and within human social systems and the ecosystem. Her work has a wide-reaching impact across multiple domains such as smart cities, urban planning, policymaking, and public health.

Mingzhou Yang

Mingzhou Yang headshot

Yang is developing a thesis in the broad area of spatial data mining for problems in transportation. His thesis has both societal and theoretical significance. Societally, climate change is a grand challenge due to the increasing severity and frequency of climate-related disasters such as wildfires, floods, droughts, etc. Thus, many nations are aiming at carbon neutrality (also called net zero) by mid-century to avert the worst impacts of global warming. Improving energy efficiency and reducing toxic emissions in transportation is important because transportation accounts for the vast majority of U.S. petroleum consumption as well as over a third of GHG emissions and over a hundred thousand U.S. deaths annually via air pollution. To accurately quantify the expected environmental cost of vehicles during real-world driving, Yang's thesis explores ways to incorporate physics in the neural network architecture complementing other methods of integration: feature incorporation, and regularization. This approach imposes stringent physical constraints on the neural network model, guaranteeing that its outputs are consistently in accordance with established physical laws for vehicles. Extensive experiments including ablation studies demonstrated the efficacy of incorporating physics into the model.

Congrats to Sergiu for successfully defending his PhD Dissertation

Sergiu Mosani's PhD dissertation titled, "PiMulator: A Processing-in-Memory Emulation Platform," was successfully defended on April 25, 2023.

Abstract: Motivated by the memory wall problem, researchers propose numerous Processing-in-Memory (PiM) architectures to bring computation closer to data. Evaluating the performance of these emerging architectures is challenging due to the lack of tools that accurately mimic both software and hardware aspects. This thesis introduces PiMulator, an open-source platform for system-level PiM emulation, suitable for rapid prototyping and evaluation of PiM architectures. At its core, PiMulator incorporates MEMulator, a main-memory emulation model implemented in System Verilog, enabling users to generate any desired memory configuration on the FPGA fabric with complete control over the PiM logic units. Furthermore, we develop and implement the FreezeTime mechanism, effectively extending the emulated memory capacity by synchronizing the limited FPGA chip memory resources with the board's DDR4 and HBM2 resources. This approach offers flexibility in modeling memory and logic behavior without compromising emulated time accuracy. The platform integrates the Memory+PiM model into the LiteX framework, ensuring compatibility with a robust FPGA and RISC-V ecosystem. This enables architects to prototype, emulate, and evaluate various PiM architectures and designs at the system level. PiMulator facilitates high-speed and high-fidelity modeling and evaluation of emerging memory and PiM architectures with workloads of interest, utilizing soft cores synthesizable on FPGA boards. The thesis demonstrates strategies to model several pioneering PiM architectures and provides detailed benchmark performance results, showcasing the platform's ability to facilitate design space exploration.

Understanding and Leveraging the Activation Landscape in Transformers

Transformer is a neural network architecture centered on the self-attention mechanism. In recent years, it has become the de-facto architecture for deep learning, e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs). However, these models, with millions to billions of parameters, remain largely opaque and their mechanisms are difficult to interpret. As their real-world applications grow, gaining a deep understanding of their internal representations is essential for effectively utilizing and improving these models.

In this work, we closely examine the activation landscape in Transformers. We demonstrate that understanding the intriguing activation phenomena in Transformers can have practical and meaningful implications. First, we identify a fundamental limitation of the well-established magnitude pruning method, where it fails to consider the existence of features with large activations in large-scale Transformers. Leveraging this key insight, we develop a simple and effective pruning approach. Second, we discover and study the presence of very few activations with extremely large magnitudes, which we call massive activations. We investigate the role of massive activations in Transformers and show how they are fundamentally connected to the self-attention mechanism. Last, we discuss our proposed extensions of this work, primarily focusing on developing a unified framework for LLM compression, through a principled investigation of existing works.
