Suggested search, about usc chemistry, the department.

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Southern California is located at the University Park Campus in the historical Figueroa Corridor of downtown Los Angeles. Our department has a vibrant community of over 30 faculty members active in research, serving approximately 250 undergraduates, 175 graduate students, and 50 postdoctoral associates. The work of USC labs demonstrates strength in each of the traditional areas of chemistry: organic and inorganic chemistry, chemical biology, experimental physical chemistry, and theoretical chemistry. Our mission is to train chemists at both the undergraduate and graduate level and prepare them for rewarding careers.

Our Students

For undergraduate students, the Department offers a unique collection of chemistry majors, including traditional chemistry, chemical research, biochemistry, chemical biology, and chemical nanoscience, which enables students to tailor their educational experience towards their specific interests and career goals. Both undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to perform cutting edge research in a variety of areas, such as organic synthesis, reaction catalysis, mechanistic chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics, materials chemistry, theoretical chemistry and reaction dynamics, and ultra-fast spectroscopy.

The “Central Science” at USC

The Department of Chemistry also recognizes the key role chemistry plays as the “central science” in other disciplines, and so the research at USC is highly interdisciplinary. The Department collaborates with many other departments at the university, including Molecular and Computational Biology, Physics, Chemical Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Through joint appointments and broad collaborations, the Department has established itself as a fulcrum for research in chemical and structural biology, drug discovery, energy research, materials science, chemical physics, and theoretical modeling of biological systems. Information about faculty research can be found on the faculty pages and individual profiles.

Nobel Laureates

The Department is proud to have fostered two “home-grown” Nobel Laureates, the late George A. Olah (Nobel Prize 1994) and Arieh Warshel (Nobel Prize 2013).

Architexture, McGill University I would strongly suggest avoiding applying for McGill for Master of Architecture program as they were simply disgusting in not letting the applicants know the result for over 6 MONTHS. They were disrespectful in not giving the results despite there were huge difference between rejected and wait-listed. Their way of communication when contacting due to extreme avoidance in notifying the result made many applicants holding the decision if this school was their preferred choice.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Key searches, department of biochemistry & molecular medicine, scientific discoveries that enhance human health.

We explore the basic mechanisms of health and disease, performing foundational research for future treatments. Our investigations focus on how cancer starts and progresses or on developing targeted therapies that reverse symptoms of disease. Our students get hands-on research experience in an intimate scientific community with robust connections across disciplines.

Our studies create knowledge of the molecular interactions behind cancer and other diseases. We’ve built a strong track record of discovery relating to epigenetic changes that control how genes are expressed. A key focus is to find new approaches  to target disease and turn these into new medicines.

UCI reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admission process, and rescind any offer of admission if discrepancies between unofficial and official transcript(s) are found. Official transcripts will be required if you are offered admission and decide to accept. Do not send official transcripts prior to this, unless requested.

GRE Test Scores

The Department of Chemistry does not require the GRE General Test or GRE Subject Tests.

Teaching Assistant Requirement

Chemistry Ph.D. students are funded as teaching assistants during their first year, and all students must satisfy UCI Graduate Division's English Proficiency for Teaching Assistantships policy in one of three ways:

  • Undergraduate degree from an institution, at which English was the  sole  language of instruction, according to the  World Higher Education Database , within five years 1 prior to admission to a graduate program at UCI.
  • A speaking section score of 26 or higher is required for TA eligibility.
  • A speaking module score of 8 or higher is required for TA eligibility.

Applicants who do not meet one of the three criteria above are typically not admitted. However, if you do not meet this English requirement, and you are a highly qualified student who would fill a need in our research team, you are strongly encouraged to contact the Chemistry faculty whose research interests you and apply to the program.

For more detailed information on these exams of spoken English proficiency, including the respective passing scores and how to determine if a student is eligible for an exemption, please review the  English Proficiency Chart .

1  Students who have received an undergraduate degree in an institution with English as its sole language of instruction, and who are more than five years beyond, must pass a UCI oral screening assessment, if they decide to accept an offer of admission, in order to work as a teaching assistant.

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department offers three graduate degrees: the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), a thesis Master of Science (M.S.), and a coursework M.S. The Ph.D. and thesis M.S. programs are designed to help students develop into independent scholars while pursuing the excitement of scientific research in a personal, supportive environment. Both the Ph.D. and the research M.S. programs prepare students for careers in academia, industry, government laboratories, and other settings requiring an advanced education in chemistry and related disciplines. The coursework M.S. does not require research and is suited to future teachers and others wishing to update or broaden their chemical expertise. Approximately 100 graduate students are currently enrolled in the graduate program. Note: Applications for the Research Thesis path Master’s degree are not being accepted at this time.

Within the Ph.D. program students have the flexibility to design a course of study focused on personal research interests, and at the same time are expected to maintain the high intellectual standards associated with the doctoral degree. Research options include biochemistry, physical chemistry, biophysical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, physical-organic chemistry, and bioorganic chemistry.
