Over 1.9 billion websites make up the internet. However, a select few dominate online traffic.

According to the latest data from Semrush’s Traffic Analytics tool , the 100 most visited sites range from search engines and social media to e-commerce and news.

The table below ranks the web’s top destinations by monthly visits. It offers a fascinating look at where people spend their time online. Use it to guide your digital marketing, stay informed, or simply satisfy your curiosity.

Just a heads up: we’ve tidied up our list a bit. We removed any NSFW websites to keep it clean and clear for you.

Here are the most popular websites of 2021 - and the winner might surprise you

It's a video platform - but probably not the one you think

internet

Video sharing platform TikTok has been named the world’s most popular website for 2021.

Web giant has Cloudflare published a list of the top 10 websites for 2020 and 2021, based on data aggregated through its Radar service, showing that TikTok.com rose to the number one spot, leapfrogging the likes of Google .com (#2), Facebook.com (#3), Microsoft .com (#4) and Apple .com (#5).

Drilling deeper into the data, Cloudflare discovered that TikTok first hit the number one spot on February 17, 2021, reaching the famed position a few more times during the month. It wasn’t until August 10, 2021, that being #1 was no longer a sporadic thing, but a regular event. On days when TikTok isn’t leading the charge, Google briefly takes over.

YouTube's moment to shine

In a blog post , Cloudflare explained that its conclusions are drawn from “aggregated data from the 1.1.1.1 Public DNS Resolver” and a “range of data” that Cloudflare has about global internet traffic patterns.

YouTube has its day in the sun on February 2, the day when Superbowl commercials made it online, but also the day after the Myanmar coup, where a video of a fitness instructor video became a viral sensation and became immortalized through memes.

Facebook’s mostly been holding on to the #3 spot, except for October 2021, when the whole “we locked ourselves out of the car” fiasco took place. During those days, Facebook only managed to drop to #4, which speaks more about Microsoft and Apple, who have been clinging onto the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Cloudflare’s report also discusses the effects Squid Game had on Netflix’s positioning, the fight among e-commerce giants, and what we can expect from meta-oriented websites in 2022 and beyond.

Scammers sell fake makeup, beauty products on dupe websites; some could cause health problems

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Scammers are selling fake beauty products and services that could do more than imperil your wallet; they could also harm your health.

A new study found a major increase in fraudulent websites selling bogus beauty products. The items may look real, but those sites can scam you or the products could lead to serious health problems.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Big brand names in the beauty industry like Sephora, Bath and Body Works and Prada are popular with consumers, but security experts at the cybersecurity company Brandshield said there are fake websites out there using the legitimate company's logos and names.

Brandshield said there has been a spike in recent years of scammers trying to sell counterfeit cosmetics and beauty products on deceptive sites.

So how do they know that they're fake?

"We're basically using different tools, AI tools and web scraping and other capabilities to really analyze huge amounts of data and detect the potential threats," said Yoav Keren, CEO of Brandshield. "You're seeing a product that looks legitimate. The picture looks legitimate. The price may be you know, reasonably discounted."

Keren said even if you get the product, you could end up with a counterfeit item which can have dangerous side effects, especially if you end up with fake Botox or filler. Both are prescription medicines meant to be administered by licensed health care providers.

"When you deal with pharmaceuticals or beauty products, these are things that if someone buys that counterfeited product, that's pretty dangerous," Keren said.

Two people were hospitalized in Illinois last month after getting fake Botox injections. The counterfeit product caused a "botulism-like" illness, with side effects like muscle paralysis, blurry vision and even death if left untreated.

Keren says there are steps you can take to avoid being duped into buying bogus beauty products.

"The first thing that you can do is look at the domain name, the URL of the website that, the address of the website that you're trying to reach. If there is a typo, in the name of that website, it's a scam," he said.

Typing in the store or brand's official website is always the best way to go; avoid phishing links; and remember that special offers sent through social media and direct messaging will usually lead to a scam.

Shopping at the stores in-person is also always a good bet to make sure you're getting a real and safe product. If you are going to buy a product or service online, check the Better Business Bureau and research reviews.

We also reached out to all of the real companies whose names were used on fake sites. None replied to our request for comment.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill takes No. 1 spot Special guest artists Nile Rodgers and Maggie Rogers sit down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden in a special countdown finale

Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list culminates today with the much-anticipated reveal of the top 10 albums of all time and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill crowned No. 1.

Upon receiving the news, Lauryn Hill told Apple Music, “This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”

To celebrate, Apple Music’s Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden sat down with legendary record producer, writer, and performer Nile Rodgers and Grammy-nominated artist and producer Maggie Rogers to reflect on the list during a special roundtable broadcasting globally today on Apple Music. Watch the full roundtable at music.apple.com .

Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums is a modern 21st-century ranking of the greatest records ever made, crafted by Apple Music’s team of experts alongside a select group of artists, songwriters, producers, and industry professionals. The list is an editorial statement, fully independent of any streaming numbers on Apple Music — a love letter to the records that have shaped the world music lovers live and listen in.

Explore the top 10 albums below.

Beyoncé’s genre-obliterating blockbuster sixth album is furious, defiant, anguished, vulnerable, experimental, muscular, triumphant, humorous, and brave — a vivid personal statement, released without warning in a time of public scrutiny and private suffering. Every second of Lemonade deserves to be studied and celebrated.

Nile Rodgers (NR): This album was so monumental. And I say this with a huge amount of respect because I know what it takes to achieve what she did here.

Zane Lowe (ZL): It was massive. Groundbreaking. It was the first time I feel that an artist of that magnitude, with that much attention on them, decided to take the narrative and really try to control it and share what they wanted to share.

Maggie Rogers (MR): I was in college when this record came out, and I remember hitting play on my laptop in my apartment, like my fifth-floor walkup in the East Village, and it was the first time I skipped class because I was halfway through and I was like, I’m not leaving. I have to be here today… What I hear more than anything is her power and the way it’s coupled with her vulnerability. There is such an exposition of female power on this record.

Nevermind and its opening salvo “Smells Like Teen Spirit” didn’t just mark an unlikely breakthrough for the Seattle trio, it upended popular culture in ways never before and never since. Punk became pop, grunge became global vernacular, industry walls broke into rubble, and lead vocalist Kurt Cobain was anointed the reluctant voice of a generation in need of catharsis — all seemingly overnight.

ZL: When this album came out, it made everyone who heard it and connected to it feel like we finally had a band, a real band that was ours. And all the things we liked that seemed disconnected and seemed out of place and were not being taken seriously — it was like oh, you’re taking us seriously now.

MR: The vulnerability of this record, coupled with the intensity of the way it sounded and the cultural moment that it bled into, touched something.

Ebro Darden (ED): They wanted to be great. They wanted to write great songs. They wanted to give us all of the feels, right? It felt real.

Amy Winehouse’s presentation and otherworldly, timeless vocals make her music feel different — not so much an attempt to re-create the past as to honor the music she loved while still being true to the trash-talking, self-effacing millennial she was. The sound of Back to Black might appeal to retro-soul fans and jazz classicists, but the attitude is closer to rap. Yes, she was funny. But she wasn’t kidding.

ZL: This is just heartbreak for 35 minutes. Unrequited, painful heartbreak made at times for the dance floor, at times to sing along to, at times to sway to — don’t let the joy of the music get it twisted. The songwriting is coming from a very painful place.

ED: Right from the beginning, I felt like her voice was delivered to us from another time. Like her vocal styling and what she was doing was timeless in a way.

MR: So many times when I hear an artist try and reference something in the past, I’m always like, I would kind of just rather have the original thing… But Amy Winehouse did it in a way that actually took all that tradition and then added something to it and moved it forward.

Kendrick Lamar’s sophomore album good kid, m.A.A.d city is one of the defining hip-hop records of the 21st century. West Coast hip-hop elders like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre anointed Lamar to carry on the legacy of gangsta rap, and the legacy of this album is a crucial example of American storytelling that established the future Pulitzer Prize winner as perhaps his generation’s most accomplished writer.

ZL: This is one of the most beautifully curated, created, structured, and track-listed albums of the modern era.

ED: Compton just had delivered so much hip-hop that there was a lot of pressure on this kid. The ability to deliver stories, bars, energy, performance on recorded material… He delivered on a Black consciousness that you don’t always get in hip-hop. And that’s why I’m really proud of the fact that it ranks where it does on this list.

In 1974, Stevie Wonder was the most critically revered pop star in the world; he was also considering leaving the music industry altogether. So when Songs in the Key of Life was released two years later, demand was so high that it became, at the time, the fastest-selling album in history. The album, which runs nearly 90 minutes, is effortlessly melodic, broad in scope, and deeply personal. Sonically, culturally, and emotionally, Songs in the Key of Life is much more than a gigantic collection of songs — it forms an entire worldview.

NR: For me, no matter what instrument he’s playing, he sort of speaks with the same voice. It’s a real unique gift. His singing, his harmonica playing, his keyboard playing all sounds like Stevie Wonder.

ZL: It’s iconic. He still continues to have such an enormous presence and influence on artists today, young and established.

MR: Songs in the Key of Life just exists as this unbelievable piece of art. I can’t imagine a world that doesn’t have this record in it.

Though Blonde packs 17 tracks into one quick hour, it’s a sprawling palette of ideas, a testament to the intelligence of flying one’s own artistic freak flag and trusting that audiences will meet them where they’re at. They did. And Ocean established himself as a generational artist uniquely suited to the complexities and convulsive changes of the second decade of the 21st century.

ZL: It is music put on canvas. I look at the canvas through different light at different times of the day, depending on how I feel. And I see strokes of color I never saw before or even knew existed. There’s so many layers and thoughts and emotions and hooks and ideas that all somehow make sense differently every single time.

MR: This record feels like smoke rising, it is so delicate and so unpredictable and so precise.

With half its track list comprising top 10 singles, this soundtrack is what truly turned Prince Rogers Nelson into one of the most instantly recognizable and distinctive pop artists ever. Prince often drew comparisons to Jimi Hendrix for the way he mixed music that felt Black and white, sacred and profane. The reality is that he had no precedent then and no comparison now.

ED: Prince is my favorite artist of all time. Without a doubt. You could point to everything that he does. He actually plays the instruments. He actually writes the song. He’s actually singing on stage. He’s actually doing his own art direction. He did his own fashion design. That was all him.

NR: When you think about artists who’ve had such a major impact on your life — my relationship with Prince was a very peculiar one because we were so regular, which is hard to say because he’s so irregular; he’s so abnormal. But the music, the film, just everything around this record was just so amazing. And it just put me in such a place of respect and happiness. And just like, man, not only you’re keeping the tradition alive, but you’re taking us to another level. I was just so proud to be in the world the same time he was in the world.

The Beatles’ Abbey Road is an ageless, unmatched collection of songs by a world-changing band at their creative peak. The band’s 11th and penultimate album sounds like nothing more or less than four extremely gifted humans playing one indelible song after another in the same room together.

MR: There is something so special about making music where you have a song that is describing some of the greatest human pain or sorrow next to a song that you would happily play for your 3-year-old, next to one of the greatest love songs… It’s timeless, but not just in the way that it will last forever, but in the way that there’s something for every moment of humanity and every human feeling on this record. It’s for people of every age.

NR: There’s something about the Beatles that’s always really magical to me. Believe it or not, the first song I ever actually learned to play on guitar was a Beatles song. I knew at that moment that I was going to be a guitar player. Prior to that, I played the clarinet.

ZL: The amount of songs that have stayed with people as they’ve lived their lives to a point… played at anniversaries, weddings, funerals, fall in love to, broken up to. There are lots of songbooks that speak to many times in life. I think The Beatles have the songbook of life.

There are few pop albums, or even works of art, that denote a wholesale shift in time and space the way Michael Jackson’s Thriller did in 1982. It did nothing less than define the modern pop blockbuster and redefine the scope and reach of music. Seven of its nine original cuts were top 10 singles, and it became one of the bestselling albums ever made.

ZL: Not only did it outsell everything in its opening year, it outsold everything in its second year. It changed the way people approached making music, releasing music, distributing, marketing music, and no one ever caught up to it. It set the bar so high.

NR: When Michael dropped this record, to me, the world changed. It was a seismic shift. Having a Black artist do a music video on the level of “Thriller” just changed the world.

Lauryn Hill’s debut — and only — solo studio album was a seismic event in 1998: a stunningly raw, profound look into the spiritual landscape not just of one of the era’s biggest stars, but of the era itself. She was, and remains, a once-in-a-generation talent whose inspiration and innovation can be heard through the decades. Artists exhaust long discographies hoping for a cohesive piece of work resonant enough to reshape culture and inscribe its creator into the pantheon; Lauryn Hill did it in one.

ZL: This album doesn’t just resonate with the people who were around when it came out and who hold it dear. It has not dated, not even a fraction. In fact, it feels more fresh and more relevant the more you listen to it… There are a lot of young artists hearing it, and it’s becoming part of their artistic DNA. It’s inspiring and influencing them… It’s timeless.

MR: Lauryn brought everybody with her on this record. She brought her community. She brought her friends and her family. You’re in the kitchen; you’re in the living room with her. You hear people; you hear the voices talking… It’s so open and so expansive and so direct… To have an artist like Lauryn Hill be the number one, that means a lot.

ED: It’s very personal. This album delivers on so many levels. It exemplifies and captures popular music of the last 25 years, holistically. It’s R&B, it’s hip-hop, it’s independent women, strong women, it’s topical, it’s sampling… I think that’s why it got voted number one.

NR: She’s amazing. This record is amazing.

A Proclamation on National Maritime Day,   2024

Our Nation’s merchant mariners embody the highest aspirations of our democracy, always answering our country’s call with commitment and courage.  Today, we honor their service and sacrifice.  Together, we recommit to meeting our sacred obligation to care for them and their families.

Unbreaking and unbending in their devotion to duty, our merchant mariners have stood for our Nation’s freedom and liberty throughout history — from delivering critical goods and troops to the battlefields of World War II to responding to devastating natural disasters around the world and shipping the goods and military cargo that keep our Nation safe and prosperous.  Today, our merchant mariners are continuing this legacy of service, delivering humanitarian aid to people in need and transporting military equipment around the world.  At the same time, merchant mariners are engines of our economy.  They facilitate international trade and strengthen our supply chains by transporting billions of dollars of goods across oceans, seas, and waterways to the hands of American businesses and consumers.

Our merchant mariners have always met the moment — and my Administration will always have their backs.  That is why we are ensuring that ships traveling between United States ports are American-built, American-owned, and American-crewed by enforcing the Jones Act.  This will not only support American shipbuilding but will also support good union jobs. Meanwhile, we have made historic investments in our Nation’s infrastructure, including rebuilding our ports so that they are safer, cleaner, and easier and more affordable to move through.

We also recognize that our merchant mariners are strongest when they reflect the full diversity of our Nation.  My Budget proposes $191 million for the United States Merchant Marine Academy to educate and train the next generation of seagoing officers and maritime leaders.  Additionally, my Administration established Every Mariner Builds A Respectful Culture Standards to prevent sexual assault and harassment and to support survivors.

Today, as we honor all that merchant mariners have done for our Nation, we also recognize the mariners who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation.  We owe these fallen heroes a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay.  But our Nation will never forget their legacy and that of every mariner who has dared all, risked all, and given all for our Nation.

The Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 20, 1933, has designated May 22 of each year as “National Maritime Day” to commemorate the first transoceanic voyage by a steamship in 1819 by the S.S. Savannah.  By this resolution, the Congress has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation calling for its appropriate observance.  I also request that all ships sailing under the American flag dress ship on that day.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 22, 2024, as National Maritime Day.  I call upon all Americans to observe this day and to celebrate the United States Merchant Marine and maritime industry with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.                                JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

Continuous Support for Creators

Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, oversees the adaptation of PlayStation's original titles into films and TV shows. Known for projects like the 'Uncharted' movie and "The Last of Us" TV series, he shares his vision for the future of gaming and entertainment over the next decade. Qizilbash offers his insights into the evolving world of creative entertainment.

—— What are your predictions for gaming's future and PlayStation Productions' impact on IP adaptation in the next 10 years?

In terms of gaming's future, I envision games becoming more personalized due to advances in technology and AI, enabling customized experiences for each player. Moreover, technological advancements will enhance emotional depth in games by allowing characters to be much more emotive and expressive, fostering more evocative storytelling. That's going to help a whole generation of creators be able to just create so much more emotion in the stories. The focus is going to shift from graphics or visuals to immersive narratives that resonate long after the controller is set down. Regarding PlayStation's role in this evolution, I see it as a destination defined by community and a commitment to quality, unexpected and memorable experiences.

As for IP adaptation, I truly believe some of the most imaginative worlds and creative stories are coming from video games. A sea change is coming where all the great creators are really leaning into video games, since many of them grew up playing games themselves. PlayStation Productions serves as a vessel for top creators to translate their passion for gaming into compelling narratives across various media. While our current focus lies on our bigger active franchises, our extensive library offers a wealth of untapped storytelling potential. Our diverse range of IPs allows us to cater to various audiences, spanning genres from family-friendly titles to horror and sci-fi. We're transitioning from merely adapting game IPs to building global entertainment franchises. We're telling stories, and the game is just one vehicle to tell a story. Each medium, whether film, TV, or location-based entertainment, presents unique storytelling opportunities that we aim to leverage effectively to let the story reach broader audiences. Adapting IPs involves maintaining respect for the source material, and the best way to do that is by partnering with top creators who have respect and passion for the IP. By expanding beyond the confines of gaming, PlayStation Productions aims to enrich the universes of our IPs and engage audiences on multiple levels.

—— How do you foresee the fusion of physical and digital realms shaping future entertainment, particularly in LBE?

I believe the concept of mixed reality will be prevalent moving forward, as technology advances. Visuals from games can now seamlessly transition into location-based experiences, enriching storytelling. Every theme park or LBE venture is essentially about storytelling, not just a little piece of entertainment. Where Sony and where technology can go in the LBE space is to help enhance narratives in physical spaces. Post-Coronavirus, there's a longing for physical connections, making LBE increasingly vital. Extending our franchises into LBE is the next paramount step, leveraging Sony's unique position in gaming, film, and technology. Every project that we've partnered with Sony Pictures on to create TV show or film, we're always thinking of how to adapt it to the next stage, which is LBE. Take, for instance, our adaptations of Uncharted. The game's cinematic essence translated seamlessly into a theatrical film, offering fans a new story while introducing newcomers to the franchise. Then we did two really cool LBE executions, an escape room and a roller coaster, further enriching the Uncharted universe, creating a symbiotic relationship between game, film and LBE.

—— What significant technological advancements do you anticipate will impact storytelling across film, TV, and gaming in the next decade?

I believe technology will democratize storytelling, making it more accessible and inexpensive for creators, and Sony is uniquely positioned to facilitate that. With the level of fidelity in video games now, there's an opportunity to repurpose assets from games for animation and live-action films, leveraging Sony's volumetric and virtual production capabilities. Gaming engines like Unreal are expanding beyond games and being used for virtual production, enabling creators to focus on storytelling rather than logistical constraints. This freedom fosters creativity and allows creators to focus on delivering compelling stories.

Advancements in AI will create more personalized experiences and meaningful stories for consumers. For instance, NPCs(Non Player Characters) in games could interact with players based on their actions, making it feel more personal. This is important for the younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences, who are the first generations that grew up digitally and are looking for personalization across everything, as well as looking for experiences to have more meaning.

—— What educational initiatives do you think are essential for preparing the next generation of creators to thrive in this rapidly evolving landscape of creative entertainment?

Sony's role is threefold: to inspire through our stories and what we do; to demonstrate possibilities by projecting a vision of the future; and to enable creators through technology. By igniting inspiration, illustrating potential, and providing tools, we empower creators to realize their dreams. Our aim is to instill this purpose-driven ethos across Sony, reminding all involved that we exist to bring joy to people's lives. Amidst schedules and costs, we mustn't forget our core mission: to create joy. It's a privilege, a stark contrast to the divisiveness seen elsewhere. At PlayStation, joy remains our guiding principle.

—— What mission or role should PlayStation Productions fulfill in shaping entertainment's future?

I envision PlayStation Productions as a beacon of unexpected, memorable, and entertaining storytelling. We aspire to lead in adapting games to film and TV, showcasing Sony's collaborative power. Our ultimate achievement? The synergy and camaraderie forged through collaboration, defining our collective success.

—— What are your expectations of Sony in supporting and advancing creative entertainment?

I believe Sony's support for creative entertainment should embrace risk-taking. Comfort indicates complacency; discomfort signals innovation. Learning from failures propels us forward. Encouraging creators to explore uncharted territory fosters uniqueness. Trusting creators to deliver greatness, even amidst uncertainty, defines our journey towards excellence.

U.S. tells Israel: Connect Gaza operation to political strategy

National security adviser Jake Sullivan met Benjamin Netanyahu as war cabinet member Benny Gantz threatens to quit over the lack of a postwar plan for Gaza.

U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan reaffirmed to senior Israeli officials Sunday a need for the government to “connect its military operations [in Gaza] to a political strategy” to ensure a lasting defeat of Hamas , a complete hostage release and a better future for the enclave, the White House said.

Sullivan, who met in Israel with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, also proposed “a series of concrete measures” to ensure more aid enters Gaza, the White House said in a statement , and discussed steps for a more effective system to protect humanitarian workers delivering that aid.

Sullivan traveled to Israel after meeting in Saudi Arabia with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The pair “reviewed the strategic relations between the two countries,” the state-run Saudi Press Agency said , and discussed needs for more humanitarian aid in Gaza and a path to a two-state solution for Palestinians.

The Biden administration is eager to complete a deal with Saudi Arabia that would cool regional tensions — but it’s unclear what form it might take. U.S. officials once hoped for a regional deal in which Saudi Arabia would recognize Israel and that would include a Palestinian state. But as negotiations for a cease-fire in Gaza have faltered, so, too, have hopes of a larger diplomatic settlement.

Netanyahu opposes Palestinian statehood, but he has not identified an alternative that would allow Israeli forces to secure military gains on the ground in Gaza and eventually withdraw from the territory. Some Arab countries have suggested that a Palestinian unity government should assume responsibility for security in Gaza, but after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas refused to step down, plans to revamp the authority also appeared to have stalled.

Netanyahu faces an ultimatum from war cabinet member Benny Gantz that threatens to destabilize his fragile coalition government. Gantz warned Saturday that he would resign from the cabinet if it was unable to draft and approve a postwar plan for Gaza, including the return of hostages, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip and an alternative to Hamas rule, by June 8. Netanyahu said Gantz’s demands would mean a defeat for Israel and an end to the war, Israeli media reported.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), speaking before Israel’s parliament Sunday, criticized President Biden for blocking arms deliveries to Israel and called on Washington to supply whatever is necessary for the Israeli military “to achieve total victory.”

“There is no excuse for an American president to block aid to Israel,” she said. Biden’s threat this month to halt U.S. offensive weapons to Israel if it moves ahead with its invasion of Rafah drew GOP criticism. In her speech, Stefanik presented the Republican Party as the true allies of Israel, and described Israel’s offensive against Hamas as a “just war.”

Stefanik also praised the policies of former president Donald Trump , including decisions to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and to cut off funding to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Here’s what to know

The Israel Defense Forces said it was continuing its multiday operation in Jabalya, a refugee camp in northern Gaza. Doctors working at al-Awda Hospital there said that Israeli troops were surrounding the facility. “We are now totally besieged,” Bakr Abusafeya told The Washington Post on Sunday. He said that hospital staff were unable to leave the facility out of fear they might be attacked “by drones that are firing at every moving object.” The IDF said in response that “we cannot comment as to the location of our forces.” World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the situation “deeply worrisome.”

An Israeli airstrike struck a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing at least 31 people , according to Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense responders. At least 20 people were injured in the attack, he said, with searches ongoing. The IDF told The Post that it was operating in the camp to dismantle Hamas capabilities and that it “follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm.” Its statement did not mention reports of casualties.

Nearly 800,000 Palestinians have been forced to flee Rafah since May 6 after Israel launched a military operation, Philippe Lazzarini , the head of UNRWA, said Saturday. The designated humanitarian zones, he said, are ill-equipped to handle the influx. “No place is safe. No one is safe,” he added.

The IDF said it recovered the body of Israeli hostage Ron Benjamin , who was killed during the Oct. 7 Hamas attack and whose body was subsequently taken to Gaza. Benjamin, 53, was a father of two and was out for a bicycle ride with friends near Kibbutz Beeri when he was killed, the IDF said. On Friday, the IDF said it recovered the bodies of three more hostages in Gaza: Shani Louk, 22; Amit Esther Bouskila, 28; and Itzhak Gelerenter, 58. The three were killed on Oct. 7, it said.

At least 35,456 people have been killed and 79,476 injured in Gaza since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry , which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but says the majority of the dead are women and children. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, including more than 300 soldiers, and says 282 soldiers have been killed since the launch of its military operation in Gaza.

Lior Soroka and Sammy Westfall contributed to this report.

Israel-Gaza war

The Israel-Gaza war has gone on for six months, and tensions have spilled into the surrounding region .

The war: On Oct. 7, Hamas militants launched an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel that included the taking of civilian hostages at a music festival . (See photos and videos of how the deadly assault unfolded ). Israel declared war on Hamas in response, launching a ground invasion that fueled the biggest displacement in the region since Israel’s creation in 1948 .

Gaza crisis: In the Gaza Strip, Israel has waged one of this century’s most destructive wars , killing tens of thousands and plunging at least half of the population into “ famine-like conditions. ” For months, Israel has resisted pressure from Western allies to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave .

U.S. involvement: Despite tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some U.S. politicians , including President Biden, the United States supports Israel with weapons , funds aid packages , and has vetoed or abstained from the United Nations’ cease-fire resolutions.

History: The roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and mistrust are deep and complex, predating the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 . Read more on the history of the Gaza Strip .
