An informal babysitting business is super easy to start, and you don't even necessarily need experience in childcare. All you need is a can-do attitude and some enthusiasm—and we'll supply you with all the know-how you need. To learn everything you need to know to start your own babysitting business, read on!

  • Once you've decided on your hourly rate, get the word out to parents and start interviewing with potential clients.
  • Improve your babysitting skills by ironing out an emergency plan, brainstorming fun activities, and learning to keep clients' homes clean.
  • Get experience as a new sitter by taking a babysitting course or offering to babysit friends' kids for free.

Step 1 Write a 1-page resume.

  • You should also include at least 3 references on the resume who parents can call to verify your credibility. For example, if you babysat your younger cousins, you can put down the contact info for your aunt and uncle as references.
  • An example of an extracurricular activity that shows additional responsibility and knowledge would be if you were or are a boy or girl scout, especially if you had any leadership role in your troop.

Step 2 Choose the age range that you want to babysit.

  • For instance, you may feel that infants and young children are more difficult to care for and opt to babysit older children.

Tip : When you are just starting out, kids that are at least 2 years old are a good option. They are no longer infants, so you don’t have to do things like bottle feed them or change diapers.

Step 3 Decide the price you will charge for babysitting.

  • You could talk to other local babysitters and see how much they charge to help you decide what a fair price is.

Step 4 Start advertising your services.

  • Be sure to include ages you will babysit, your phone number, and days or hours you would be available on any fliers.
  • If your community has any local social network pages, such as a Facebook page or Nextdoor page, you can also advertise there.

Step 5 Interview with parents who want to hire you.

  • If you are under 18, then always make sure your parents know when you are going to an interview and give them the name, phone number, and address of the potential clients, even if it’s someone you know.
  • If the child you will be babysitting is present during the interview, make sure to interact with them so the parents can see how you get along.
  • If you aren’t comfortable with how a certain job sounds, it’s perfectly OK to reject it. The interview process goes both ways and is about finding a good fit for everyone.

Step 6 Use a planner or app to schedule your appointments so you don’t overbook.

  • You can also keep track of your payments in a notebook or app to do personal accounting as well as record all of the contact information for your clients and any special notes about the children you babysit.

Step 1 Get a list of foods the children can and can’t eat.

  • If a child does have any allergies, make sure you know where their emergency medication, such as an epipen, is.

Step 2 Have a plan for how to handle any emergency situations.

  • Other emergencies could include getting locked out of the house, a child choking, a child falling down and hitting their head, a child running off, or a burglar. You need to know how to react to any of these possible situations.

Step 3 Plan fun activities to do with the kids.

  • This will keep the kids entertained and they will look forward to spending time with you. Planning fun activities will make you a way better babysitter than someone who just sits and watches TV with the kids for the entire time.

Step 4 Keep the house tidy for the parents.

  • Parents will really appreciate that you kept the house in good shape for them.

Step 5 Avoid being on your phone while you are babysitting.

  • This is especially important when you are watching young children who can easily get themselves into trouble if you aren’t paying attention.

Tip : If you want to use your phone or a computer after putting a child to bed, just make sure it’s OK with the parents first. Don’t listen to any loud music or anything else that will prevent you from hearing the child if they get up or need something from you.

Step 1 Obtain permission from your parents if you are under 18 years old.

  • This is very important because your parents will be able to judge if you are mature enough and responsible enough to care for other younger children. If your parents don’t feel like you are ready to babysit, you can ask them what you need to do to show them you are ready for the responsibility.
  • Even if your parents agree that you are up to the task of babysitting, they might have other concerns. For example, they might worry that it could interfere with your schoolwork or family responsibilities. You can discuss these types of concerns with your parents and try to come to an agreement about how you will balance babysitting with your other tasks to get their approval.

Step 2 Take a babysitting course.

  • Some course topics include basic child care, professionalism, safety, and even how to start a babysitting business.
  • You typically have to be at least 11 years old to take these types of babysitting courses.

Step 3 Volunteer to care for children you know.

  • Knowing the difference between W2 and 1099 work – It’s important that you and the family you are sitting for know the proper tax forms to fill out. If you’re working in a family’s home , then you’re considered a household employee and need to receive a W2 form. If you’re providing work from outside of the home, then you’re an independent contractor and need to fill out a 1099 form. Make sure you get these right come tax season, or you both could be dealing with some fines.
  • Knowing the age to start a business – If you’re under 18 but want to form your business, ask your parents for help (We’ll outline the different business entities a bit later).
  • Following directions on babysitting sites and apps like care.com . If you’re working through a nanny agency, there are likely already forms and payment processors to fill out that help manages payments and taxes. Follow directions on these sites so you and the family are recording everything properly.

Think carefully about the types of families you’re looking to babysit for. Is babysitting a business? Babysitting can absolutely be a business! It all depends on how much time and effort you want to devote to it. Babysitting is commonly a job for students, but you can certainly be a full-time babysitter as an adult as well.

Why Babysitting Is A Business

A business is defined as "the practice of making a living by engaging in commerce" or "a person's regular profession, trade, or occupation."

Businesses can involve buying and selling physical products. Or in the case of babysitting, they can provide services to their customers.

If you earn a living through babysitting, then you're operating a business!

The exception is if you have an employer who you perform babysitting jobs for. In that case, you'd be an employee. However, the majority of babysitters are self-employed and do all the work to find their own clients and perform their jobs all on their own.

Who Is A Babysitting Business Right For?

There's a big misconception that when you become a business owner you don't have to work a 9-to-5 job, you're right, you have to work 24/7. So I traded my 9-to-5 job in for a 24/7 job. I work all the time. I work in the business, I work on the business, I am texting clients all the time, I'm managing my team, I'm managing my clients, I'm working with the developers, business coaches, business mentors... so there is a lot going on.

A babysitting business is a great option if you're not afraid of hard work and you enjoy spending time with children.

You should be able to effectively communicate and connect with both children and their parents.

Someone who owns and operates a babysitting business should be:

  • Self-motivated

Is There A Need For Another Babysitting Business In Your Area?

If you're thinking of starting a babysitting business you're going to have to understand if there is a need first, you're going to have to understand the industry and do some research. Is there a need in your neighborhood, your area, or where you're trying to build this business? Who is your target market? What do they look like as in where do they spend their money, how often are they going to need a sitter, what age groups are there, who is your ideal target market, your ideal customer. How much are they willing to pay? Is there competition in the area? How long has your competition been at it, how big of a community have they already reached out to? You're going to have to figure out that industry nitty gritty, what is going on in your area.

Do You Have The Skills To Run A Babysitting Business?

If you're already babysitting then of course you have those skills, but what about business management skills? Here are some of the skills you will need:

  • How to manage a team and to keep and retain employees
  • How to manage clients and keep and maintain clients
  • How to build a client list
  • How to market to clients and promote your business
  • How to work with finances and understand payroll and taxes
  • And general business admin

It is not easy to master these business skills, you need to be dedicated to your business and self-motivated.

What Business Type Should Babysitters Use?

When it comes to running a business, there are many different ways to classify your business.

Sole Proprietorship. For most babysitters, I think the best choice is something called a sole proprietorship. Especially when they're first starting off. It saves a lot of the paperwork and legal fees associated with starting a business.

There isn't really anything you need to do to start operating a sole proprietorship, and any earnings from your business go on your personal taxes at the end of the year.

The downside of a Sole Proprietorship is that you own all assets of the business instead of a separate legal entity, and you have unlimited liability in case one of your babysitting clients ever tries to file a lawsuit against you.

Corporations or LLCs (Limited Liability Companies.) A corporation or LLC is a separate legal entity that you can create for your business. All assets (things owned) and liabilities (money owed) are kept separate from you in this company.

These legal entities help to protect their owners from liability. Even if your business goes bankrupt, having a corporation or LLC may prevent creditors from coming after your personal property to collect on their debt.

Unless you're making a lot of money each year, I don't think it's usually worth babysitters creating a corporation or LLC for their business. You will need to pay legal fees to get either legal entity set up, and the accounting and taxes will be more complicated than having a sole proprietorship.

There are a couple of exceptions. In some areas, you could be required to have a corporation or LLC to run a business. In such areas, you don't have any choice except to create one.

The other time that I think it's a good idea to create a corporation or LLC for your babysitting business is if you're going to be hiring other babysitters to work for you. Once you start hiring employees, your business gets considerably more complicated and your liability increases as well.

Other Forms. There are other business structures such as partnerships, cooperatives, and franchises. But most of these aren't very relevant or useful for your babysitting business except in specific situations.

What Does It Cost To Start A Babysitting Business?

Startup costs for a babysitting business are very low. If you already have clients, then your costs are practically nothing.

All you really need to pay for is your transportation to and from babysitting jobs. It will likely cost you about $20 per week in gas if you drive a car car. Depending on the distance traveled to jobs, you may need to consider if public transit is the cheaper option.

Marketing will help you get additional clients. It might be worth making a website to let parents in your area know about you and your babysitting business. It doesn't need to be fancy, but having an online presence is more important than ever.

It's a good idea to set up a social media presence for your business on websites like Facebook as well. Although this usually won't cost you anything except your time.

If you decide to hire other babysitters as employees or rent out an actual office space, that's when the business will start to get considerably more expensive.

Do Babysitters Need A Business Licence?

It really varies from location to location, as well as the exact specifics in your area. You might need several different business licenses at a city, county, and state level.

In some regions, you may need government certification and could be required to pass a Working With Children Check (WWCC) or similar background check before you're allowed to run a babysitting business.

In other places, you may need to register your business name and obtain a DBA (Doing Business As) registration. Especially if you want to open a separate bank account under the name of your business or if you have other similar requirements.

Most of the time you can only babysit a certain number of children at a time before you would need to become certified as a daycare. Particularly if you're running your babysitting business out of your own home. Again, this number varies from place to place and also based on the age of the children you're caring for.

Gooey Babysitters Inc is a family owned business that is owned and run by Mrs. Kim and her daughter Dr. Jenner Karadashian. Since this is a family business, the owners are not looking to take on any private investor that will become an external partner.

It’s easy to assume that the names leading the Fortune500 will have their days packed with back-to-back meetings, endless calls and dinner engagements. But Bill Gates wishes he’d learned to free up space in his diary earlier in his career, a trick Warren Buffett is well known for.

The Microsoft co-founder has been open about his work-life balance— or lack thereof —when he was leading the Big Tech giant.

But in a post on Meta platform Threads, Gates said he no longer believes a stacked schedule is a guarantee for productivity. Reposting an article about how being less busy can make a person more happy, he wrote: “It took far too long for me to realize that you don’t have to fill every second of your schedule to be successful.

“(In hindsight, it’s a lesson I could have learned a lot sooner had I taken more peeks at Warren Buffett’s intentionally light calendar.)”

The 68-year-old entrepreneur and philanthropist has been open with his reflections about his working life at Microsoft, and the things he would do differently if he had his time over. Last year during an appearance on his own podcast, Unconfuse Me with Bill Gates , alongside guests comedian Seth Rogen and Rogen’s wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, Gates revealed he had once ranked himself against others in terms of how much time he had had seemingly wasted by sleeping.

“In my thirties and forties when there would be a conversation about sleep it would be like ‘Oh,, I only sleep six hours,’” Gates told the couple. “And the other guy says ‘Oh, I only sleep five,’ then ‘Well, sometimes I don’t sleep at all.’ 

“I’d be like ‘Wow, those guys are so good, I have to try harder because sleep is laziness and unnecessary.”

Years later, Gates, now worth $154 billion per the Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index , says he has realized good sleep is “super important” for brain health, a topic which has increased in importance for him following the death of his father, Bill Gates Sr., who died at home in  September 2020  after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

But Gates didn’t just push himself to the extreme—he expected the same of his staff. Last year Gates told graduates from Northern Arizona University that when he was their age he simply “didn’t believe” in vacations or weekends.

He told the students in May: “I pushed everyone around me to work very long hours. In the early days of Microsoft, my office overlooked the parking lot—and I would keep track of who was leaving early and staying late. But as I got older—and especially once I became a father—I realized there is more to life than work.”

The Buffett method

A turning point at which Gates, a father of three, may have decided to switch up his schedule was after learning how Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett manages his time.

In a Bloomberg interview in 2017 with both Buffett and Gates, who dropped out of Harvard University after three semesters, Gates said one of the lessons he had learned from the Oracle of Omaha was the beauty of a free schedule.

“I remember Warren showing me his calendar. I had every minute packed and I thought that was the only way you could do things,” Gates said. “The fact that he is so careful about his time… he has days that there’s nothing on.”

Business isn’t a “proxy of your seriousness,” Gates added. Before Buffett chimed in: “I can buy anything I want, basically, but I can’t buy time.”

As well as traveling the world for his philanthropic causes, Gates now also dedicates more of his time to hobbies like reading and listening to music—demonstrated in the highlights he often shares on his blog , GatesNotes.

Buffett, meanwhile, seems not to have struggled so much with finding the balance. A 2005 feature in the Wall Street Journal reported Buffett spent a significant proportion of his day “reading and thinking,” with the mogul worth $135 billion adding in 2017 he “likes sleep” and has “no desire to get to work at four in the morning.”

A consortium made up of Neom subsidiary Enowa, Japan's Itochu, and France's Veolia had agreed to develop the plant in December 2022. 

The plan was to create a desalination plant that ran on 100% renewable energy and delivered two million cubic meters of water a day to Neom, or about 30% of the city's projected needs.

The plant was to be based in Oxagon, Neom's industrial zone and the first phase was scheduled for completion next year.

However, sources familiar with the project told Middle East business-trade publication MEED that the joint development agreement for the project had expired and not been renewed.

Detailed reasons for the cancellation are unclear. BI contacted Enowa, Itochu and Veolia for comment.

In a statement sent to MEED, Enowa said Neom's water requirements have evolved over the last year, "leading us to adopt a stepwise approach to expanding capacity."

Under the plans, the desalination plant would have diverted brine, the main waste product in desalination, toward industrial projects instead of discharging it into the sea.

Brine is one of the main pollutants caused by desalination plants.

Earlier in May, Malcolm Aw, a UK energy entrepreneur, said he canceled a $100 million contract to develop renewable energy desalination plants in Neom over human rights concerns.

It's a blow for the desert city. Neom is being built in deserts in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, one of the dryest and hottest parts of the world, meaning that desalination is key to the success of the project.

Planners have said Neom will be an eco-city, running without cars or roads and powered with 100% sustainable energy. It's part of Saudi ruler Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan to reorient the country's economy away from the fossil fuels that are the source of its wealth and toward innovation, technology, and tourism.

But In April Bloomberg reported that Saudi Arabia had been forced to scale back plans for the project, which could cost as much as $1.5 trillion. According to the report, The Line, a planned mirrored "vertical skyscraper," may be reduced in size from more than 100 miles to just over one mile.

In an apparent effort to refute the report, the Saudi economy minister, Faisal Al Ibrahim, told CNBC last month that all Neom projects were continuing at the planned scale.

"There is no change in scale. It is a long-term project that's modular in design," he said.

AI companies make fresh safety promise at Seoul summit, nations agree to align work on risks

World leaders are expected to adopt a new agreement on artificial intelligence when they gather virtually on Tuesday to discuss AI’s potential risks but also ways to promote its benefits and innovation. The AI Seoul Summit is a follow-up to November’s inaugural AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom, where participating countries agreed to work together to contain the potentially “catastrophic” risks posed by galloping advances in AI.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Leading artificial intelligence companies made a fresh pledge at a mini-summit Tuesday to develop AI safely, while world leaders agreed to build a network of publicly backed safety institutes to advance research and testing of the technology.

Google, Meta and OpenAI were among the companies that made voluntary safety commitments at the AI Seoul Summit , including pulling the plug on their cutting-edge systems if they can’t rein in the most extreme risks.

The two-day meeting is a follow-up to November’s AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom, and comes amid a flurry of efforts by governments and global bodies to design guardrails for the technology amid fears about the potential risk it poses both to everyday life and to humanity.

Leaders from 10 countries and the European Union will “forge a common understanding of AI safety and align their work on AI research,” the British government, which co-hosted the event, said in a statement. The network of safety institutes will include those already set up by the U.K., U.S., Japan and Singapore since the Bletchley meeting, it said.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the opening session that seven months after the Bletchley meeting, “We are seeing life-changing technological advances and life-threatening new risks — from disinformation to mass surveillance to the prospect of lethal autonomous weapons.”

The U.N. chief said in a video address that there needs to be universal guardrails and regular dialogue on AI. “We cannot sleepwalk into a dystopian future where the power of AI is controlled by a few people — or worse, by algorithms beyond human understanding,” he said.

The 16 AI companies that signed up for the safety commitments also include Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, IBM, xAI, France’s Mistral AI , China’s Zhipu.ai, and G42 of the United Arab Emirates . They vowed to ensure the safety of their most advanced AI models with promises of accountable governance and public transparency.

It’s not the first time that AI companies have made lofty-sounding but non-binding safety commitments. Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft were among a group that signed up last year to voluntary safeguards brokered by the White House to ensure their products are safe before releasing them.

The Seoul meeting comes as some of those companies roll out the latest versions of their AI models .

The safety pledge includes publishing frameworks setting out how the companies will measure the risks of their models. In extreme cases where risks are severe and “intolerable,” AI companies will have to hit the kill switch and stop developing or deploying their models and systems if they can’t mitigate the risks.

Since the U.K. meeting last year, the AI industry has “increasingly focused on the most pressing concerns, including mis- and dis- information, data security, bias and keeping humans in the loop,” said Aiden Gomez CEO of Cohere, one of the AI companies that signed the pact. “It is essential that we continue to consider all possible risks, while prioritizing our efforts on those most likely to create problems if not properly addressed.”

Governments around the world have been scrambling to formulate regulations for AI even as the technology makes rapid advances and is poised to transform many aspects of daily life, from education and the workplace to copyrights and privacy. There are concerns that advances in AI could eliminate jobs, spread disinformation or be used to create new bioweapons.

This week’s meeting is just one of a slew of efforts on AI governance. The U.N. General Assembly has approved its first resolution on the safe use of AI systems, while the U.S. and China recently held their first high-level talks on AI and the European Union’s world-first AI Act is set to take effect later this year.
