Times Tables Learning

Once you have understood what multiplication is, you are then ready to start learning your tables.

One of the best ways to learn their tables is to follow these simple steps:

  • First, write down the times table you want to learn. This is useful to see what the times table looks like. Study it and use your noticing skills, look for patterns...visual learning.
  • Next, read it aloud - sing or chant the table. This is the auditory learning - not only have you spoken the table but you have also heard it.
  • Repeat, repeat and repeat some more - repetition is the key to learning tables (or other facts). The more you say the table aloud, the more you will learn it like you learn word to a song.
  • Next, see how good your recall is by trying a practice sheet, or getting someone to test you. You should aim to be able to answer a times table question almost instantly - certainly within about 5 seconds!
  • If your recall of the table is up to scratch, then move on to your next table - but keep practicing regularly to keep it in your mind! Otherwise your brain will quickly forget it.
  • Need more practice? Go back and repeat some of the previous steps.

Once you are confident in a range of tables, try doing some tables challenges... there are plenty for you to try at the Math Salamanders!

Hopefully before long, your times table knowledge will be secure in your head and you will have it at your fingertips to use when you need it!

Different Tips for the 6 Times Table

Table of 6 from 1 to 20:, practice questions:, 6 times table – explanation & examples.

6 Times Table

  • $1\times 6 =6 = 6 \times 1$
  • $2\times 6 = 12 = 6 \times 2$
  • $3\times 6 =18 = 6 \times 3$
  • $4 \times 6 =24 = 6 \times 4$
  • $5\times 6 = 30 = 6 \times 5$

6 times table is the table which contains multiples of the number 6.

Learning and understanding the 6 times table is essential for solving multiplication, division, and factorization problems. Like the previous tables, this one also follows some patterns that make it easier to understand. This topic will provide interesting tips and skills to help students master it faster.

You should refresh the following concepts to understand the material discussed here.

  • Basics of addition and multiplication
  • 1 times table
  • 2 times table
  • 3 times table
  • 4 times table
  • 5 times table

6 Multiplication Table

We can write the table of 6 as follows:

  • $6\times1 = 6$
  • $6 \times 2 = 12$
  • $6 \times 3 = 18$
  • $6 \times 4 =24$
  • $6 \times 5 =30$
  • $6 \times 6 =36$
  • $6 \times 7 = 42$
  • $6 \times 8 = 48$
  • $6 \times 9 = 54$
  • $6 \times 10 = 60$

Let us look at some simple tips which can help us memorize the 6 times table.

Using the 5 Times table: One of the easiest ways for students to learn the 6 times table is by using the 5 times table. This method will help revise the 5 times table and learn the 6 times table simultaneously.

In this method, if we add natural numbers in ascending order to the multiples of the number 5, as shown in the table above, the addition will correspond to the 6 times table. Note that the first multiple of the number 5 is added with the first natural number, which is 1. Similarly, the second multiple of the number 5 is added with the second natural number, 2, and so on.

  • Digits pattern 1: The 6 times table follows a specific pattern of 6, 2, 8, 4, and 0. These are the last digits of the first five multiples of the number 6. This pattern continues: the last digits of the next five multiples of 6 are also 6,2,8,4, and 0.

6 times table pattern

The table above shows the pattern in green digits, and by memorizing this pattern, students can easily learn and memorize the 6 times table.

  • Digits pattern 2: When the number 6 is multiplied by an even number, the last digit of the resulting outcome will be the same as the even number being multiplied. For example, when we multiply $6$ by $2$, we get $6\times 2 = 12$, so the last digit of the number $12$ is again $2$. Similarly, $6\times 8 = 48$; again,  the last digit of $48$ is $8$, which is the even number we multiplied by $6$.  The green digits in the picture below depict this pattern for the first four even numbers.

Digits Pattern 6 Times Table

  • Using the 3 times table: This method is quite simple and easy to understand. This method will also help students in the revision of the 3 times table. In this method, if all the outcomes of the 3 times table are doubled, i.e., multiplied by $2$, then we get the 6 times table, as shown below.
  • Addition: Students who have difficulty understanding previous tips and tricks can use the addition method to learn the 6 times tables. It is an effective method, but it is lengthy and calculations may take time. This method is particularly effective if students want to learn the first 10 multiples of 6. As the name suggests, this method involves addition. For example, we start with digit 0, and if we add the number 6 to it, we get 6 as the answer. We can work out the next multiple of 6 by adding 6 to the current answer and so on.

6 addition pic

  • Recitation: Students who have difficulty grasping previous tips and tricks and find it hard to do the addition or multiplication can use this method. Students can recite the 6 times loudly and repeatedly. Once they have memorized it, it will be easier for them to develop their basic understanding. Recitation can be done like:6 times 1 is 6 6 times 2 is 12 6 times 3 is 18 6 Times 4 is 24 6 times 5 is 30 6 times 6 is 36 6 times 7 is 42 6 times 8 is 48 6 times 9 is 54 6 times 10 is 60

We can write a complete table of 6 from 1 to 20 as:

Example 1 : Using the 6 times table, calculate 2 times 6 times 1 minus 4

2 times 6 times 1 minus 4 can be written as:

$ 2 \times6 \times 1 – 4$

$ = 12 \times 1 – 4$

$ = 12 – 4$

Example 2 : What is the 9 th multiple of 6?

We know the first 10 multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60.

So the 9 th multiple is 54.

1). A teacher wants to distribute pens equally among the students of her class. How many pens should she give to each student if the class consists of 6 students and

  • the total number of pens equals 18?
  • the total number of pens is equal to 36?

2). Calculate 6 times 6 minus 30.

3). Find the value of “Y” if “Y x 6 = 36”.

4). From the given table, select the numbers which are multiples of 6.

1). The teacher wants to distribute the pens equally. So each student should have the same number of pens. As the class has 6 students, so we can use 6 times table to solve this problem

  • When the total number of pens is 18, we know by 6 times table that $6\times 3 =18$, so each student would get 3 pens.
  • When the total number of pens is 36, we know by 6 times table that $6\times 6 =36$, so each student would get 6 pens.

2). 6 times 6 minus 30 can be written as:

$ 6\times 6 – 30$

$ = 36 – 30$

3). $ Y \times 6 = 36 $

We know $6\times 6 =36$

If you have forgotten any answers, just go back to the 'all tables in sequence' page and practice them again thoroughly before trying again.

Once you have got the hang of a number of tables you can select the speed test and choose the tables you want to practice getting quicker at. If you make a mistake, you came see what the right answer is at the end of the test. This will help you learn all of your tables. The speed test is good practice for getting your tables diploma. On the tables diploma the questions are a bit quicker than on the speed test, but if you get all of them right you will get your tables diploma. There are two tables diplomas. The little diploma is made up of 30 questions. Your little diploma shows you can do the 1,2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables. For the big tables diploma you are given 40 questions which include all the tables from 1 to 12.

Learn the multiplication tables in an interactive way with the free math multiplication learning games for 2rd, 3th, 4th and 5th grade. The game element in the times tables games make it even more fun learn.

Here you can find additional information about practicing multiplication tables at primary school. The 1 times table, 2 times table, 3 times table, 4 times table, 5 times table and 10 times table are the first times tables to be learned. The 6 times table, 7 times table, 8 times table, 9 times table, 11 times table, 12 times table and of course all the tables in random order are the next step.

Not every child finds it easy to learn all the tables, so it is a good idea to keep on practicing them regularly after you learned them. There are a few tricks which make it easier to learn the tables and continue to master them, such as putting the smallest number first, which makes it easier for many children to answer correctly. For example 4 x 9 is easier to work out than 9 x 4. Switching the multiplication sum around makes it easier to answer. What also often helps is to use the tables you know well for answering the sums in the more difficult tables. One example of this is 6 x 7, which is often said to be tricky. If you do 5 x 7 first and then add 1 x 7 it is suddenly easier to answer. You can do this the other way round too. For instance with 4 x 7 you can do 5 x 7 first then subtract 1 x 7.

Why do we put so much effort into learning tables? Well, the multiplication tables keep on coming up in the next primary school years and even when you're at secondary school. You don't see them as tables, but as part of bigger mathematical problems. And it isn't only at school, but in your everyday life it is useful to know your times tables well so you can quickly work things out, for instance when you are buying or selling vegetables on the market. If you have any questions, comments or ideas for Timestables.com, please use our contact form. We'd be glad to hear from you.

The 5-step plan

Learn the times tables with the 5-step plan. We developed an innovative five step plan to help pupils learn the times tables in an effective and efficient way. This method has been tested at several schools and is recommended by teachers. The steps are:

  • Step 1a: View, read aloud and repeat. To get familiar with the table.
  • Step 1b: Fill in your times tables answers in sequence and check if you got them all right.
  • Step 2: Drag the correct answers to the questions.
  • Step 3: Fill in your answers for the mixed questions and check if you got them all right.
  • Step 4: Multiple choice questions will help you to improve by looking at the questions in a different way.
  • Step 5: Proof your knowledge and get the diploma.

When you finished the 5 steps you can play the memory game or exercise with the worksheet. Other way to train more are with the tempo test, the 1 minute test or to play the times tables games.

We advise to exercise daily for 15 minutes for maximum result.

Students will learn multiplication strategies for the times 6 facts. Instruction and practice will cover skip counting and multiples along with using the times 5 facts and adding more set.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.B.5

Learning objective

Students will be able to solve times 6 multiplication facts.

Introduction

Students will reflect on facts and strategies they have learned. They will practice a set of facts with The Gynzy Math Problem Generator.

Instruction

Students will begin by thinking about the strategies they already have used to learn the 0 - 5multiplication facts. Students review the identity, zero, and commutative properties of multiplication. Next, students practice skip-counting the multiples of 6, and practice is provided. Students then review the times 5 facts and use the strategy of times 5 plus one more group to solve ×6 equations. Students will demonstrate the skill by drawing the additional group. Students then practice the facts again by spinning a wheel that matches a color to reveal a fact on a dartboard. The lesson concludes with two word problems using the times 6 facts.

Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.

Students outline arrays on graph paper. These are colored and decorated. The idea of tessellation is discussed.
