IIMB Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Doctoral Programme in Marketing focuses on a wide range of topics using a variety of research methods and tools. Faculty members have the expertise in a variety of areas including Product Management, Brand Management, Marketing Decision Models, Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Strategy, Services Marketing, Retailing, and Business to Business Marketing. The coursework includes courses on marketing management, marketing models, and research methods.

Research Overview

How do taxes affect customer choice? How do expert opinions influence consumer decision making? Auction design, experiments for digital marketing, text mining to understand platform quality perception are some of the research areas that interest the faculty in the Marketing area at IIMB. Chairperson Prof. Sreelata Jonnalagedda offers a brief overview of the course work in the programme

Research Spotlight

My area of interest is Quantitative Marketing, wherein we model customer decision-making using microeeconomic principles

Customers engage with opinions made by others on social media in a variety of ways. This includes liking, upvoting, commenting or sharing these opinions. PhD scholar Jose Manu’s research explores how and why these customer engagements occur and how the presence of others in the network motivates customers to engage with online reviews.

In her Ph.D. thesis, Dhrithi Mahadevan conceptualises and identifies specific drivers of customer experience for access-based services like Uber, AirBnB, Swiggy, Zomato etc. She uses her framework to investigate how the interactions between customers, platform and third-party providers affect the overall customer experience, which in turn affects the performance of both the third-party providers as well as the platform.

Earn a doctorate in Product Management, meet the industry demand for technological expertise

Product Management has undergone a tremendous transformation from its original application and practice as a particular company’s management of the marketplace appeal of a single, commercial brand. Now, at its highest levels, Product Management has expanded to include the application of new technology, not as an option, but as an imperative to remain competitive and viable.

Capitol Technology University’s online PhD in Product Management will prepare you, the business professional, to meet the challenges and maximize the opportunities presented by these sweeping changes. Through this research-based, online doctorate, students engage quickly in research and publishing without the limitations inherent in traditional coursework models. Graduates will be prepared for a variety of leadership roles in business management.

Your expertise will be in high demand among companies seeking to introduce new technologies while mitigating the risk that can accompany such transformations. You’ll be able to deliver solutions that can lower costs, streamline processes, and ensure the highest quality as your organization competes in the global marketplace. Through this uniquely designed doctoral program, you can undertake research that is specific to your professional needs and complete your degree while maintaining your career.

As a doctoral student in Product Management, you’ll enter the program with a research idea and at least a committee chair. After enrollment, you’ll work with your chair and research committee to further develop your research proposal. You’ll then work independently to produce a meaningful body of original research of publishable quality. In the process, you’ll also gain valuable insight into the legal, political, ethical, and social dimensions of your field of study.

This is a research based doctorate PhD degree where you will be assigned an academic supervisor almost immediately to guide you through your program and is based on mostly independent study through the entire program. It typically takes a minimum of two years but typically three years to complete if a student works closely with their assigned academic advisor. Under the guidance of your academic supervisor, you will conduct unique research in your chosen field before submitting a Thesis or being published in three academic journals agreed to by the academic supervisor.  If by publication route it will require original contribution to knowledge or understanding in the field you are investigating.

As your PhD progresses, you move through a series of progression points and review stages by your academic supervisor. This ensures that you are engaged in a process of research that will lead to the production of a high-quality Thesis and/or publications and that you are on track to complete this in the time available. Following submission of your PhD Thesis or accepted three academic journal articles, you have an oral presentation assessed by an external expert in your field.

Careers and Placements

Career opportunities, academic careers.

An academic career is usually the obvious choice for most doctoral students after they complete their thesis. Such a career usually involves a rich life of continuous learning and growth in an intellectually stimulating environment. Most of the fellows from IIM-A who have taken up this route, were absorbed as faculty in some of the top management institutes in India as well as in other countries. The usual track of a professor advances from an assistant professor up to the level of professor of the institute. If an academic chooses they could become a director of an institute. An academic career involves doing research, writing, and publishing; teaching and instruction; coaching and mentoring students; and consulting with industry, business, government, etc. Research is a significant portion of the life of an academician and allows them to gain recognition in their field of study globally. This career choice also enables networks across the world by travelling for conferences where they can present and discuss their current research work. The grooming for publishing top-quality research, presenting at conferences, and training for teaching all starts while the scholar is pursuing the PhD degree at IIM-A.

The institute not only provides the educational mechanisms to encourage such activities but also provides sufficient financial aid and incentives to boost this career option. Another excellent option for an early stage academician is to opt for a post-doctoral position. A postdoc, as it is colloquially known, is a position that can be taken up immediately after the completion of the thesis to strengthen expertise in the techniques of research as well their preferred topic of research. This period allows them to be associated with a professor, an academic or research institute, the industry or even think-tanks that require research on upcoming studies. This is a good option for scholars who want to create networks within top research and academic institutes, contribute to the world through their research and get a few publications. Some PhDs have also looked at opportunities pertaining to managing educational institutes which are beyond the undertaking of teaching & research assignments. And some others have become part of research centres at educational institutes as well as research organisations.

Corporate & Other Careers

Global management consulting firms value the skills of doctoral candidates since they develop exceptional analytical skills as well as have an in-depth knowledge of certain industries. Also, due to the statistical prowess and proficiency of quantitative skills, a number of companies hire doctorates as analysts especially in equity research and financial modelling firms. In addition, several PhDs have joined industry in their management verticals depending on their topic of specialisation such as Marketing, Finance, Strategy, HR etc

Careers in the Public Sector

The areas of research for several Ph.D. graduates traverse the boundaries of the traditional industry set-up. Public policy institutes, Indian and global think-tanks, large research firms, and organisations such as the UN and the World Bank hire doctorates.

The Government of India also absorbs PhDs. Whether it is via the policy route or on account of their in-depth knowledge and expertise in a field, many PhDs find a place in government.

Career Transition: From PhD to Product Management

' src=

Academia is increasingly becoming the alternative career path, as researchers and leading journals tout the value of broader career prospects . Several limitations cause dismal scenarios for academic work in postdoctoral research, including limited grant funding and discrimination in higher education. Postdoctoral research is a career trajectory ideal for scientists planning on becoming professors. As a result, ‘alternative’ career options are now becoming increasingly appealing to many PhD researchers. Moreover, dodging the postdoctoral position has also accelerated the career path for researchers by offering better value to the PhD credentials. Product management, listed #9 on the top 50 jobs in the US by Glassdoor, is one such exciting career option for scientists.

Defining the Product Management Role

Product management spans sales to finance and complements a scientist’s deeply-rooted scientific thinking skill set in business. A product manager is specifically involved in building innovative products and services to address unmet needs within the market. Aside from launching new product offers, as a product manager, you can tweak and improve existing products. Responsibilities in the role involve: implementing price changes in the market, closing a product line, or training a sales team. Product management can be defined as generating revenue for a company by creating value for customers. At its core, a product manager steers the infrastructure that makes a company tick from beginning to the end.

Skill set for Effective Product Management

Scientists can smoothly transition to a career in product management as the skill set gained in team-based project work is sufficient. For example, the career will include working in teams and collaborating with multiple departments – reflecting the academic research experience. Product managers will work across various groups in an organization, including finance, operations, legal, quality control, and project management. Such a setting can perhaps develop more scientifically and ideally within biotechnology, which combines science with business .

The toughest attribute for researchers is the transition from specialization to generalization , as product management is not an exact science. While the success of PhD depends on logic and objective judgment, in product management success partly depends on multiple stakeholders. Subjective measures based on uncertain factors starkly contrasts the absolute measures experienced during a PhD. Nevertheless, a PhD degree allows for effective problem-solving in product management coupled with skills akin to research method design. Overall, the role is a deeply personal interpretation, as the approach varies among individuals based on organizational culture and several independent factors.

How to Use Your PhD Skills for Product Management

Attributes for successful product management are similar to the PhD skills of multitasking, data presentation, communication, and a strong entrepreneurial drive. Nevertheless, career transitions can still be challenging as employers often prefer experienced professionals than those specialized elsewhere. When breaking into the industry a few tips can assist you to get your foot out the door:

  • Become familiar with basic marketing and finance principles – Online platforms including Udemy, Coursera, free YouTube lectures, micro MBAs and University-based certification offer a good start.
  • Establish your problem-solving skills – refine your organizational skills gained during PhD training; include inventory list development combining QR codes and Evernote, to your advantage.
  • Apply to associate-level positions – career transition may seem tricky since a PhD graduate might overqualify for a role as product manager in a company. However, the years of PhD training and dedication qualify for a managerial position in a small to mid-size company. Apply for both junior and mid-career level positions.
  • Create your own product – a simple product such as a blog, or any side-project you initiated as a PhD or postdoctoral researcher can illustrate your entrepreneurial potential for product management.

Compared to academic work where tenure track is shaky and uncertain, product management provides higher pay packages, better locations, and additional skills for career development. The functional leadership skills are ranked clearly unlike those in academic domains. The benefits outweigh the efforts of career transition providing access to meaningful work.
