PhD Program

jobs for phd chemistry students

Professor Wender discusses chemistry with his graduate students.

Doctoral study in chemistry at Stanford University prepares students for research and teaching careers with diverse emphases in basic, life, medical, physical, energy, materials, and environmental sciences.

The Department of Chemistry offers opportunities for graduate study spanning contemporary subfields, including theoretical, organic, inorganic, physical, biophysical and biomedical chemistry and more. Much of the research defies easy classification along traditional divisions; cross-disciplinary collaborations with Stanford's many vibrant research departments and institutes is among factors distinguishing this world-class graduate program.

The Department of Chemistry is committed to providing academic advising in support of graduate student scholarly and professional development.  This advising relationship entails collaborative and sustained engagement with mutual respect by both the adviser and advisee.

  • The adviser is expected to meet at least monthly with the graduate student to discuss on-going research.
  • There should be a yearly independent development plan (IDP) meeting between the graduate student and adviser. Topics include research progress, expectations for completion of PhD, areas for both the student and adviser to improve in their joint research effort.
  • A research adviser should provide timely feedback on manuscripts and thesis chapters.
  • Graduate students are active contributors to the advising relationship, proactively seeking academic and professional guidance and taking responsibility for informing themselves of policies and degree requirements for their graduate program.
  • If there is a significant issue concerning the graduate student’s progress in research, the adviser must communicate this to the student and to the Graduate Studies Committee in writing.  This feedback should include the issues, what needs to be done to overcome these issues and by when.

Academic advising by Stanford faculty is a critical component of all graduate students' education and additional resources can be found in the  Policies and Best Practices for Advising Relationships at Stanford  and the  Guidelines for Faculty-Student Advising at Stanford .

Transferring Your Ph.D. Chemist Skills to a Nontraditional Career

By Lisa M. Balbes, Ph.D., Balbes Consultants LLC

During graduate school, you’ve been thinking about chemistry, your particular field of research, and specific scientific techniques and methods. But have you spent any time thinking about yourself, and what you really want to do for the next step in your career?

The traditional career path for a Ph.D. chemist is to pursue a professorship or to do research in a government or industry laboratory. Fortunately, during your graduate career you probably got hands-on teaching and research experience to support the pursuit of these career trajectories. But what if you realize that you really don’t like teaching? Or that hands-on bench chemistry, or even research, is not what you love? Do you need to start over in order to pursue a nontraditional path? Absolutely not!

Consider Your “Transferable Skills”

During your postgraduate studies, you have been acquiring all kinds of knowledge and skills that the “real world” values highly. If you spend some time thinking about knowledge you have gained, as well as what you have to offer a potential employer, you will find all sorts of “transferable skills”—things you know how to do that you can immediately apply in another field.

For example, while you may have found that you don’t like teaching a chemistry lab class, you may also have discovered that you really enjoy mentoring others and helping them one-on-one. This might lead you to explore careers in technical support, where you instruct individual scientists in how to use new equipment after they have purchased it.

Maybe you realized that while research chemistry is not for you, what you are really good at is writing up the results of that research into journal articles and reports. In that case, technical writing or editing would be a promising career path for you to explore.

jobs for phd chemistry students

Identify Your Strengths

Exploring your career options comes down to understanding what your strengths are and what you enjoy doing. Often these are the same, so it’s just a matter of identifying them. Start by asking yourself, “What are my most significant accomplishments so far in my career?” Then explain in detail (out loud or in writing) what made them so satisfying.

A colleague recently told me his most significant accomplishment was an oral presentation he gave to his department. However, when asked to elaborate, he talked at length about how the work bridged two departments, and he had to do all sorts of political maneuvering to get them to agree on how the work would be presented. He did not mention the technical subject of the talk once. What made it so significant for him was not the science, but serving as the bridge between departments and negotiating deals between people. He is now looking into a career in technology transfer, where serving as a bridge between companies will be the main focus of his day.

Some other questions you can use to identify your transferable skills are:

  • What do other people say you’re good at, or ask you for help with?
  • What are you doing when you lose track of time?
  • Are you a people person or a data person?
  • Are you a big picture guy or a detail gal?
  • Is it the tool or the technique that excites you?
  • Do you prefer organizing people or things?
  • What sort of things do you do in your free time? (You learn there too!)
  • What do you feel passionate about?

Focus on Your Passion

Consider the course of your career and ask yourself, “When am I having the most fun?”

If writing your dissertation is the most fun part of your career, then looking into careers in technical writing might be in order.

If explaining to nonscientists how your research is going to make the world a better place gets your juices going, a career in public affairs or public relations might be for you.

If you wake up in the morning thrilled that you’re going to be helping one of your friends figure out what to do with his or her career, perhaps the profession of human resources is in your future.

If you look forward to discussing things with your adviser and convincing him or her that yours is the better way to proceed, then perhaps a career in technical sales deserves some consideration.

If learning about and implementing safer ways of doing things, and then ensuring that your labmates follow the safest procedures, is where you prefer to spend your time, then a career in chemical health and safety (inspector, agent) might be for you.

Throughout your career, you have collected reams and reams of data and learned various techniques of data analysis and critical thinking to turn that data into actual useful information and hypotheses. If the analysis interests you more than the collecting, maybe being a business analyst position is for you.

Perhaps you have had to consider the intellectual property (IP) implications of your research. Instead of the rigorous right-and-wrong, black-and-white of science, did you enjoy the more flexible shades-of-gray world of intellectual property? If so, you may want to talk to IP law firms, many of which hire Ph.D. scientists straight out of graduate school to serve as technical specialists.

No matter which of your skills you enjoy using the most, there is sure to be a career path that will take advantage of that. Once you have identified the skills you want to use, talk to career counselors and/or more experienced scientists, and ask them what career paths might let you do that. Find professional societies that cover your new field, and see what career resources they have. See a list of resources to start your exploration .

Everything you have done so far has taught you something. In some cases, it taught you that you never want to do that again. In other cases, you learned that you were good at something unexpected, or you enjoyed using a new skill. If you take the time to identify the skills and tasks you truly enjoy, then explore career paths that will let you use them, you will have learned the most valuable lesson of all.

Graduate Programs

To the Potential Graduate Student,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Idaho. We are a mid-sized chemistry department with 16 faculty members, between 25 and 40 graduate students, and over a dozen postdoctoral scientists. The ratio of graduate students to faculty is small enough that each student receives individual attention, but there are still enough students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scientists in each lab to allow for lively discussions.

Renfrew Hall, where the Department of Chemistry is located, is a four-story building with 95,000 square feet of floor space. The building is air-conditioned and well equipped with modern facilities for chemical research. Graduate students have access to major instruments including 300 and 500 MHz NMR spectrometers, a high resolution GC/MS, and a single crystal X-ray diffractometer. The department also has several nanosecond lasers, a dozen Fourier transform infrared spectrometers, three Raman spectrometers, a photon correlation spectrometer, two atomic absorption spectrometers, various chromatographs (SFC, GC, and HPLC), and facilities for neutron activation analysis. We have world-renowned research laboratories in fluorine chemistry and supercritical fluids.

Our department offers research programs in many branches of chemistry, including biological applications of nano-technology, catalyst design, development of Instrumental methods, drug synthesis, environmental chemistry, explosives synthesis and detection, fluorine chemistry, nucleic acid therapeutics and diagnostics, and theoretical organic chemistry. Our department also has strong interactions with two national laboratories, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington, and the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Our graduate students often have the opportunity to perform experiments in collaboration with scientists at these national laboratories.

We have high expectations for our graduate students in research, but we do not expect our students to spend all their time in one research laboratory. We encourage our graduate students to participate in chemical demonstrations and lectures given regularly at local schools and in area communities. We take teaching seriously, and all our incoming graduate students participate in a short course that covers many of the less-obvious skills required of university-level teachers.

Our strength lies in our surroundings as well as in our department. Moscow, our hometown, is located in the heart of the rolling Palouse hills, described in the National Geographic Magazine article, “A Paradise Called the Palouse”. Washington State University is only 8 miles away, adding to the intellectual and cultural opportunities in the region. To the east are the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and to the west is the Columbia River Basin. We are just a few hours' drive from some of Idaho’s renowned wilderness areas.

If you would like to attend a university that has high standards and is small enough for you to get to know students and faculty in other research groups, the University of Idaho is a great choice. Our students have the opportunity to interact with talented members of the faculty every day. I invite you to learn about the scientific endeavors underway in this department in the rest of this web site and, when you are choosing a graduate school, to consider the advantages of the University of Idaho.

PhD student in Marine Biogeochemistry with focus on Greenhouse gas fluxes

Logo of Science 4 Refugees

Job Information

Offer description.

The project focuses on how Blue Growth sectors (mariculture, fisheries, tourism, etc) influence microbial processes and greenhouse gas fluxes from the coastal ocean.

Subject area description

The ocean is one of the most quickly changing regions globally. The blue growth wants to promote and prioritize the expansion of marine economy sectors such as marine industrial activities, sustainable energy, marine tourism, fisheries, and aquaculture. For example, aquaculture is the fastest growing food sector currently and feeds more than half of the world’s population with marine products. Along with these massive growths, investigating marine biogeochemical cycles in affected regions is crucial for understanding current and projected carbon and nitrogen budgets.

The coastal ocean fuels the atmosphere with conspicuous amounts of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). This is because the distance from the seafloor to the surface is relatively short, and a fraction of the sedimentary CH4 and N2O does not get fully consumed in the water column. Under increasing pressures from human activities, it is not clear whether the distribution of CH4 and N2O in the upper coastal ocean will decrease or increase. For example, fish farming activities increase the transport of organic matter to the sediments, which may increase remineralization and CH4 and N2O fluxes. However, quantifications of how much GHGs reach the atmosphere due to mariculture are scarce at present.

This PhD project aims to address these knowledge gaps to deliver several outcomes crucial from both scientific and management perspectives. Specifically, the student will: (a) resolve high-resolution CH4 and N2O benthic and sea-air fluxes from bivalve and fish farming; (b) determine the impact of novel entities on benthic carbon and nitrogen cycling including fluxes of CH4 and N2O; (c) compare emissions deriving from fast-growing Blue Economy sectors to build updated carbon and nitrogen budgets.

The proposed project includes collaboration with scientists from environmental chemistry, molecular ecology, benthic ecology, and biogeochemistry that will improve our understanding of how human pressures may alter vital ecosystem services and will make it possible to propose potential mitigation measures.

Duties

Research assignments - The PhD student will participate and organize research expeditions mainly using small vessels and boats; carry out continuous CH4 and N2O flux measurements; sample water, sediment, and animal specimens; perform lab analyses of gas concentrations, isotope compositions and possibly genetic analyses of biological samples.

Practical tasks include, but are not limited to, development of protocols for in situ measurements (chambers, bubble catchers, etc.), application of new laboratory techniques, analyses of gases and nutrients with multiple instruments, data analysis, and paper writing.

The candidate is expected to travel for extended periods of time and work in remote locations.

Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.

As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.

What we offer

The PhD student will join a young, thriving, and enthusiastic team working on Marine biogeochemistry at the Department of Marine Science in Gothenburg. The PhD student will carry out their own project but at the same time will collaborate with other students and postdocs. Excellent collaborative skills are required as their work will be linked to multidisciplinary groups and active collaboration with researchers from GU, Stockholm University, University of Bergen and others.

The candidates will have access to state-of-the-art research vessels and biogeochemistry laboratories. Main working place is campus Gothenburg located in the brand new Science Faculty building Natrium ( https://www.gu.se/en/study-gothenburg/natrium-a-new-building-on-medicinareberget ).

Employment

Some college graduates only need to make a $50,000 salary for a decade for their degrees to be worth it

  • College degrees are under fire given the pain of student debt and political and economic troubles.
  • Some public university graduates only need to earn over $50,000 for a decade to make a return.
  • Graduates pay more to live in popular states but they can win due to better job markets there.

Insider Today

Crushing debt , political furor , and a brutal economic backdrop of historic inflation and higher borrowing costs have fueled fresh skepticism about the value of a college degree.

Yet, stumping up the cash for one may still be worth it financially if it results in significantly higher earnings. That's especially true for public universities that charge in-state tuition: their average alumnus only has to make $50,000 a year during the decade after graduation to make a positive return on their investment, The Wall Street Journal reported , citing new research from Strada Education Foundation.

Alternatively, graduates who can amass $500,000 before taxes over 10 years typically come out ahead and can repay their student loans. The finding holds for state-school graduates across sectors, The Journal said.

Related stories

"As long as you're above that $50,000, even in the most expensive states, you'll still have that positive return on investment," Nichole Torpey-Saboe, Strada's vice president of research, told the newspaper.

It costs more to live in states like New York and California, but recent graduates can still outearn their peers because of the superior job markets in those states, which often provide better access to internships and entry-level roles.

Strada found that around 80% of state-school graduates in those states scored a return on their college investment, compared to 60% in West Virginia and just over 50% in Idaho, The Journal said.

The nonprofit also revealed that community college doesn't provide as big an earnings bump, and private nonprofit universities tend to be more expensive at $8,000 a year and another $11,000 for room and board.

Taking out a student loan and getting a four-year degree can be daunting for many people, as student loans can haunt borrowers for decades, and college campuses have become a hotspot for protests and political clashes. The prices of food, fuel, and housing have all soared, and monthly payments on credit cards, cars, and mortgages have jumped.

But an affordable degree that bolsters someone's earnings potential and career prospects without breaking the bank can still pay off nicely.

New college grads face a cooling job market. Here's where the jobs are.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

May 21, 2024 / 5:10 PM EDT / CBS News

After earning their college degrees this month, new graduates are understandably eager to land their first job and start making their education pay off. But that could pose more of a challenge this year than in 2023.

Hiring for freshly minted college grads is forecast to decline 6% from a year earlier, according to a recent survey of more than 200 employers from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, a group representing college career services employees.

Data from payroll services provider Gusto also shows that the new grad hiring rate — the share of recent graduates who are hired in a given month — is now about 6%, down from a recent peak of 10% in 2021. Still, the hiring rate is about level from a year earlier, with Gusto principal economist Liz Wilke telling CBS MoneyWatch that the job market for new grads is relatively stable.

40% underemployed

Securing that first job out of college may be a rite of passage, but it can also be nerve-racking for young adults who need to pay for groceries and make the rent. And about 4 in 10 recent college grads are currently "underemployed," meaning they're working in a job that doesn't require a college degree, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

"We know that the first job out of college is incredibly important when setting the course for the rest of a person's career," Wilke said. "However, not every college graduate is going to enter a booming job market, and some are not afforded the option of being picky."

According to Gusto, the top five industries currently hiring new college grads are legal, nonprofits, arts and entertainment, health care, and social assistance and construction.

"New grads with skills that are applicable to these industries are likely to see increased interest in their resumes," Wilke noted.

Some industries are planning to cut back on the number of new hires from the class of 2024, the National Association of Colleges and Employers found in its survey. Among them are computer and electronics manufacturers, with those businesses projecting a decline of about 12% in hires of new grads, while financial firms expect an almost 15% drop, the group found.

Technology companies have slashed thousands of jobs in recent months as they shift toward artificial intelligence. Yet new grads who know how to work with artificial intelligence may have an edge, Wilke said.

"AI skills are something [businesses] are seeking from this younger cohort of workers," she added. "Business owners believe that since this younger generation has 'come of age' with this technology, that they are better equipped to figure out how to best put it into practice."

Employers say the modest pullback in hiring comes after an extremely tight labor market in the years after the pandemic, when workers were harder to come by and they weren't seeing as many resumes.

"It's easier now than it was last year," Chris Jones, the founder of tutoring company Planting Seeds Academic Solutions, which is now in the process of hiring about 40 workers, many of them recent college grads, for its summer camps. "We're getting 50 to 100 applicants per opening," compared with 20 to 30 applicants in 2021 to 2022, a time when he said many applicants didn't want to work in person.

Samuel Clark, the CEO of Broadway Crew, which provides staffing and support for Broadway shows, said he thinks hiring has returned to a more "normal" pace.

"A year ago it was really, really difficult, I was pulling my hair out and paying them an absurd amount of money to make sure they'd be there on time," Clark told CBS MoneyWatch. "Now the power dynamic is coming back in the middle."

For new college grads who are looking for work, Clark said his advice is to hustle, but he noted that landing that first job can be difficult. "Sometimes it's really hard and you have to take the slings and arrows," he added.

What new grads want in a job

As for what new grads want in their first jobs, they're looking for hybrid roles with some in-person and some remote days, Vicki Salemi, a career expert at job site Monster, told CBS New York. And they're very interested in learning about a job's salary, with particular fears of ending up underemployed, she added.

"They want to talk about salary on the job interview," Salemi said. "They might not even pursue the job if salary isn't discussed in the interview."

That's especially important in high-cost cities like New York, which Gusto found is the top metro area for hiring the class of 2024, representing 10% of all new grad hires. The average new grad's starting salary in New York is $64,134, which equates to only $28,500 in other cities when adjusted for the cost of living, Gusto found.

"Our report shows New York as being the most popular city for new grads, but last on the list in terms of affordability," Wilke said. "People this age should consider what cities they see themselves ending up in and jobs those cities have to offer."

Aimee Picchi is the associate managing editor for CBS MoneyWatch, where she covers business and personal finance. She previously worked at Bloomberg News and has written for national news outlets including USA Today and Consumer Reports.

Graduate visa route stays, as UK government proposes ‘crackdown’ on abuses and migration

Jamie Durrani

The UK government has proposed new measures to ‘further crack down on student visas’, but has stopped short of closing the graduate visa route. Many in the higher education sector have expressed relief that the graduate visa will stay after the government conducted a rapid review of the route as part of a series of measures to reduce net migration.

Universities had been worried that the UK government would close the graduate visa route making it harder to attract people to fill PhD posts

‘We welcome the news that the graduate route remains in place,’ said Tim Bradshaw , chief executive of the Russell Group, a body that represents 24 of the country’s top research universities. ‘As recognised by the [migration advisory committee’s (MAC)] recent report, international students bring huge value to our universities, our communities and our economy.’

The uncertainty caused by the decision to review the visa has been toxic  Vivienne Stern, Universities UK

Concerns over the future of the graduate visa were raised after Home Secretary James Cleverly wrote to the MAC in March to request a rapid review of the graduate entry route. Earlier this month, the leaders of seven higher education groups wrote to Cleverly arguing that: ‘Any changes would be extremely damaging to the UK’s reputation and standing as a leading global study destination and research powerhouse, with a severe impact on the economy both nationally and across the regions.’ They also highlighted a significant decrease in the number of international students applying to study in the UK, adding that changes to the graduate visa route ‘could turn a sharp contraction into a collapse’.

The MAC filed its report  in mid-May, noting that it found ‘no evidence of any significant abuse of the graduate route’ and recommending that the route remain in place in its current form. However, it did raise concerns over the use of some recruitment agents that provide ‘misleading information to prospective international students’.

Important and welcome

The chief executive of Universities UK, Vivienne Stern, described the report’s finding that the graduate route should remain as ‘extremely important and welcome’. ‘The uncertainty caused by the decision to review the visa has been toxic,’ she said.

‘What is needed now is stability – we need the government to provide much needed reassurance to both universities and international students that the graduate route is here to stay,’ she added.

It’s very, very hard to bring in non-UK PhD students Steve Howdle, University of Nottingham

Following the publication of the MAC report, the government announced that the graduate route would be ‘kept under review’. It also proposed a number of measures to further regulate the recruitment of international students including ‘cracking down on rogue recruitment agents’, tougher compliance standards for institutions recruiting overseas students, restrictions on remote delivery of coursework and raising the requirements on international students’ financial self-sufficiency.

Earlier this year, the government raised the salary threshold for skilled worker visas by 48% to £38,700. In certain circumstances , science graduates can obtain a skilled worker visa if their salary is over £30,960. However, this figure is 12% higher than the average starting salary of a chemistry graduate in the UK (£27,661).

PhD student shortage

Steve Howdle , head of chemistry at the University of Nottingham, takes issue with policies that have made it harder to bring researchers to the UK. ‘I’ve had a career of 30 years now. I’ve graduated 60 PhD students and helped in the development of around 20–25 postdoctoral researchers,’ he says. ‘And many of those have come from outside the UK into my group and helped me and UK plc to do new science and create new opportunities that have been very valuable. And what I see at the moment is that pathway has become incredibly more restricted – and I think that’s a really difficult thing to get our heads around.’

‘What we’re talking about here is highly-skilled scientists who come to the UK and contribute very positively,’ he adds.

According to Howdle restrictions on recruitment of international talent will make it harder for the UK to maintain its reputation as a global science leader. ‘At the moment, because of the visa situation, it’s very, very hard to bring in non-UK PhD students,’ he notes. ‘And so there is already a dearth of PhD students, we’re starting to see it’s more and more difficult to fill the roles to do [research]. The UK is positioned as punching above its weight in terms of research in the world – that’s going to be damaged if we carry on the way we’re going.’

In January a review conducted by accounting firm PwC on behalf of Universities UK highlighted that ‘increasing financial pressures’ on the UK higher education sector had led to an overreliance on international students to ‘cross-subsidise domestic teaching and research activities’. Howdle believes that making it harder for universities to recruit foreign students will create additional financial strain.

‘We all know that tuition fees are the main mode of funding into higher education and those tuition fees have not increased at all over the last decade … so universities have been pushed to take more overseas students who can and do pay higher fees,’ he says. ‘And that’s been the way that universities have stabilised and have run for the last decade – that’s all going to get very much harder.’

2024 Faculty of Science Excellence Award winners announced

jobs for phd chemistry students

  • Tweet Widget

Michelle Maillet (Academic Associate), Lauren Kay (Clerical), Chantal Marotte (Management), and Moshe Dalva (Technical) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards.

These awards, announced at the Faculty of Science Council meeting on May 21st, recognize the outstanding contributions made by members of the Faculty’s administrative and support staff during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Read below the citations prepared by the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards Committee.

Michelle Maillet, Department of Geography, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Academic Associates

As Undergraduate Advisor, Michelle Maillet has been responsible since 2014 for guiding students through their programs in the Department of Geography. Her job expanded in 2019 when she became full-time advisor for the Interfaculty program in Sustainability Science and Society. As a steadfast supporter of students’ interests, Michelle consistently goes the extra mile to provide students with outstanding support. One of many examples of this is her organization of extra mid-semester activities centered around arts and crafts that enable students to connect, socialize, and let off steam. She has a university-wide reputation as an exceptionally caring undergraduate advisor, to the point where many students name their interactions with her as their favourite part of being a Geography student.  For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Academic Associates to Michelle Maillet.

Lauren Kay, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Clerical Staff

Since 2010, Lauren Kay has served the Department of Physics with great distinction as the Graduate Program Coordinator. This is a huge responsibility, as Physics has about 200 graduate students, many of whom are international, with around 80 new entrants to be selected and around 80 who complete their programs each year. Lauren has made exceptional efforts to ensure that students progress through their thesis work smoothly, from streamlining procedures for paying them to constituting their thesis committees and coordinating their final defenses. She handles changing or exceptional circumstances, such as students having sudden visa problems, with considerable skill and good grace.   For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Clerical staff to Lauren Kay.

Chantal Marotte, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Management Staff

Chantal Marotte has been with the Department of Chemistry for 38 years and has been managing the graduate program in Chemistry since 2003. She handles a range of activities, including filling TA positions, assessing graduate applications, and, perhaps most importantly, ensuring the well-being of graduate students with exceptional dedication and skill. At one point, she intervened extensively to find financial support for a student who experienced substantial loss because of a fire in their residence building. How much Chantal has touched the hearts of Chemistry students was made evident by a compilation of video testimonials that students and alumni made in 2021 to thank her for her efforts.  For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Management staff to Chantal Marotte.

Moshe (Mike) Dalva, Department of Geography, Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Technical Staff

Moshe (Mike) Dalva has been a Research Technician in the Department of Geography since 2004 and is also an MSc graduate from the same department. He couples exceptional understanding of the theory behind the intricate, complex, and sometimes old, pieces of equipment in Burnside Hall with remarkable technical skill in operating and fixing them. In one instance where an equipment failure appeared to be terminal, Mike was able to diagnose and begin fixing the problem within an hour, potentially saving the student who relied on this equipment many months of delay. He is deeply dedicated to ensuring that researchers conduct their work safely, not just in a laboratory setting but also in remote field locations, where he also provides essential support.   For all these reasons and many more, I am very happy to present the Faculty of Science Excellence Award for Technical staff to Moshe Dalva.

Kentucky high school student micah price denied diploma after praising jesus in his ‘off-script’ graduation speech.

A Kentucky high school allegedly withheld a graduate’s diploma when the student went off script during his graduation speech to preach his belief in Jesus.

Micah Price received the green light to praise Jesus Christ in his commencement speech at Campbell County High School in Alexandria, Ky., on May 24, but followed his address with “urging other Christians to stand up.”

“Class, before another word leaves my mouth, I must give the honor, the praise and the glory to my lord and savior Jesus Christ,” Price said to a packed Truist Arena at Northern Kentucky University.

His oration received resounding applause from the audience before he continued with his holy message.

“Who in his very words tells us he is the light, he is the way, the truth and life. Class, anyone in the audience today, I’m here to tell you that if you don’t have any of those things in your life and can’t seem to find the answer, then my lord and savior is your answer.”

Micah Price didn't immediately receive his high school diploma after praising Jesus in his graduation speech on May 24.

When Price shifted his prepared remarks, school officials weren’t pleased with his off-script moment and confronted the graduate after the ceremony.

The school reprimanded Price and denied him his diploma.

“After the speech was over, one of the principals came in, tapped me on the shoulder, very politely and professionally told me that I was going to have to go in front of the board and explain what I did because I went off script,” Price said in a video posted to TikTok on Sunday.

The school district had allowed Price to thank his “lord and savior Jesus Christ” before telling him to read off the preapproved script.

Micah Price received the green light to praise Jesus Christ in his commencement speech at Campbell County High School in Alexandria, KY on May 24.

“All speakers were told that going off their submitted speech, or any unplanned choices at graduation, may have repercussions as they would at any school function,” Superintendent Shelli Wilson  told WKRC.

“Off-program choices such as speech, signs, and caps in support of any cause or religion, injecting inappropriate language, or political election statements could lead to something other than this outpouring of Christian faith,” Wilson said.

Price claimed he had all the preaching to his classmates in the script but was told to take it out before it was approved.

“I had that in my script, and they told me that I was; they said that it was a public institution; and they didn’t want to divide their audience or my audience because I was speaking,” Price told the outlet. “I think it was fine that I thanked him, but going in and urging them to follow him and urging other Christians to stand up and talk about him might be the thing they didn’t want.”

Price told his TikTok followers that he had no bad blood with Campbell County or the principals as they were “just doing their job.”

He also took full responsibility for the incident, saying he went against school policy because “he serves a higher power.”

“I do no one’s bidding but God. So, if anyone’s in the wrong, I am. I deserve to get punished.”

Price received his diploma on Wednesday after a long holiday weekend.

Following the ceremony Price was given a diploma cover without his actual diploma.

“Holding it is just an answered prayer, that’s all it is, just an answered prayer,” Price told the outlet.

The incoming US Air Force Academy cadet says he has no regrets and would “do it again times two.”
