I spent some years doing that, although I never just wrote the plan; I always facilitated and translated and coached planning. (Unless, of course, you’ve read my post on my worst business plan engagement, in which case you’ll know I’ve used “never” and “always” wrong in the above).

• If you wanted to get your body in shape, would you hire somebody else to eat better and exercise regularly?
• How would you feel about sending somebody else to the doctor to be examined to determine your health?
• How do you feel about pre-packaged vacations?
• What would you tell your ghost writer? How long would that take you? Could you type that out, maybe? Could you do it in YouTube?
• How will you deal with questions that come up, after the plan is done?
• How much good will a single one-time plan document do you?
• What will you do about revisions later on? Will you just accept a plan done once, and never revise?

I ghostwrite people's memoirs, articles, and books. I wrote a memoir for one executive two months ago. He served in the French military and it was like writing an adventure story. 

I've ghostwritten speeches and written white papers for intelligence contractors. I also offer pitch writing and business-plan writing, from "Shark Tank" to angel-investor pitches. I love my work and helping my clients.

I had a passion for writing from an early age but I didn't know anything about freelancing

After college, I worked at a life-insurance company writing death-benefit letters. I hated every minute of it. 

When I set up a website, I went on Fiverr to get a logo designed for it. I realized you could sell writing there and meet clients for freelance writing. 

I saved up $9,000, and in January 2015, I left my insurance job. I took a part-time job in an e-commerce warehouse and created my Fiverr account in March. 

One of my first pitch-writing gigs was for an organic-food company. I charged $10. After that, my work started to attract more clients. By November, I had made enough money to leave the warehouse job and focus on Fiverr full time.

In the first 3 years, I charged a much lower rate and said yes to every job I could find

I was charging $0.02 a word in 2015. If someone needed something written, I'd send over some samples and take it from there. Now I charge $0.30 a word.

I focused on delivering top-quality work. It was important to me that the client was happy and got what they needed. 

New buyers approached me through Fiverr, so I didn't have to do much marketing. 

I tend to get higher rates for copywriting but I find ghostwriting more creatively fulfilling

To write 10,000 words for a novel or memoir, I charge around $3,000. For some memoirs, people can spend $30,000. The time investment is more significant because I do interviews and outlines with the client. I can write 1,000 words in an hour and 10,000 words, including interviews and outlines, in 12 to 15 hours.

I went to the Bahamas in 2019 and I got to spend most of my time on the beach, but I had some client work to keep up with. I went to Antigua in 2018 on my own to explore. But I was able to do some jobs from there, too. 

I usually work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Maybe I'll come back for an hour or two in the evening if I still have things that I need to finish.

I've taken on fewer projects this year, which has been amazing. I've also been able to take a lot more time for my own writing projects. I love that I have freelancing jobs to support my own writing. It's hard to find the time to do that if you're working a nine-to-five.

I don't have to put on a suit to go into an office to do my job. If I want to go on vacation, I don't have to worry about taking days off. Flexibility is freedom for me.

How to write a business plan

A step-by-step guide to writing your business plan

When you're starting or restructuring your business , writing a business plan can seem like an intimidating task, especially if you’ve never done it before. It can be even more difficult to convey the value of what you envision to potential investors, this is where knowing how to write a business plan comes into play.

Business plans should be a priority, as they lay out the steps you need to take in order to accomplish your specific goals and ensure nothing is missed. They can also be used to show potential investors that you're serious and that you have a strong plan and business model, increasing the likelihood of receiving financing.

Here are the key steps to writing a business plan

1. Write an executive summary

The executive summary is a short overview of your business and your plans. It shouldn't be more than two pages, and it can be used to capture the interest of potential partners, investors, and vendors. This should highlight why you'll be successful.

Executive summaries must include the following:

A mission statement , which is a sentence or two that will explain what purpose your business will serve and what pain points you can fulfill

Information about your product or service, including anything that makes it different from what's already out there

Basic information about your company's leadership team, including existing team members and their roles

Information about where your team is located

Basic financial information (including current funding or what you're seeking funding for) and high-level growth plans about what you plan to accomplish if you're asking for financing

2. Write a company description

This section will dive deep into the company itself, including the problems that you plan to solve, and the communities you want to reach. List out the specific audience segments, consumers, organizations, or businesses that you want as customers.

You also want to highlight what differentiators or competitive advantages will set your business up for success. This is, simply put, the place to advertise your strengths.

You should include the following:

Every unique selling proposition (USP) that your business has, and each should be tied back into your mission statement

An explanation of every competitive advantage that you have as a business and a business owner

An individual highlight for each individual expert on your team

Information about company patents or copyrights if relevant

3. Outline your business goals

This section should include what you'd like to accomplish with your company in the short and long term. For example: To become a $100 million dollar corporation in five years by becoming one of the top online retailers in certain categories. This is usually written first because it gives everyone an idea of where your business is going.

The goal of your business is important. Don’t be too vague when writing an objective for your business. Be specific about what you want to accomplish and how you want it done. An objective statement should also include how your vision has affected you personally and why it's important for others (customers) as well.

4. Outline your organizational & management structure

It should include the following:

Information about your business's legal incorporation structure, which may be an S or C corporation, a general or limited partnership, an LLC, or a sole proprietorship. Explain who the different owners would be.

An organizational chart that showcases your management and leadership structure within the company.

Highlight any executives and upper-level team members who are currently on board, along with information about each that explains how they'll contribute to the success of your budding business. Including CVs of key members of your team may be useful.

5. Describe your services and products

Your business will offer products, services, or both. This is where you'll detail exactly what you're planning on selling.

This section should include the following information:

An explanation of how the product or service benefits your customer

The product lifecycle, which is how long it can be sustainable in the market after it's first introduced

Plans for intellectual property like patent filings or copyright

Research or product testing that you've conducted for your product or service

6. Detail your marketing and sales plan

All businesses need a detailed marketing strategy if they want to connect with new customers and generate sales. This portion of your business plan will detail what your plans are.

You'll need to include:

Specific plans you have for attracting, acquiring, and retaining customers . This will include different platforms that you plan to use, both online and in-person, and should account for all stages of the digital sales funnel .

An explanation of the sale process, including whether online checkout will be available, what the lead collection process is like, and what any client onboarding processes look like (if any).

7. Outline funding requirements

Your appendix should always include the following if they aren't already listed in the business plan:

Copies of any patents or copyrights

Personal recommendations or testimonials

Product research that didn't have a place earlier in the business plan

Resumes or CVs of any high-level members

Additional data about the process of manufacturing or creation

Any necessary permits or licenses that you've obtained

Taking the time to write a strong, comprehensive business plan that can guide your business and persuade external team members to get on board is well worth the effort, whether you pen the plan yourself or hire outside help.

Business plans are a crucial part of connecting with financers, partners, vendors, and investors. Last summer, as they drove to a doctor’s appointment near their home in Manhattan, Paul Skye Lehrman and Linnea Sage listened to a podcast about the rise of artificial intelligence and the threat it posed to the livelihoods of writers, actors and other entertainment professionals.

The topic was particularly important to the young married couple. They made their living as voice actors, and A.I. technologies were beginning to generate voices that sounded like the real thing.

But the podcast had an unexpected twist. To underline the threat from A.I., the host conducted a lengthy interview with a talking chatbot named Poe. It sounded just like Mr. Lehrman.

“He was interviewing my voice about the dangers of A.I. and the harms it might have on the entertainment industry,” Mr. Lehrman said. “We pulled the car over and sat there in absolute disbelief, trying to figure out what just happened and what we should do.”

Mr. Lehrman and Ms. Sage are now suing the company that created the bot’s voice. They claim that Lovo, a start-up in Berkeley, Calif., illegally used recordings of their voices to create technology that can compete with their voice work. After hearing a clone of Mr. Lehrman’s voice on the podcast, the couple discovered that Lovo had created a clone of Ms. Sage’s voice, too.

The couple join a growing number of artists , publishers , computer programmers and other creators who have sued the makers of A.I. technologies, arguing that these companies used their work without permission in creating tools that could ultimately replace them in the job market. (The New York Times sued two of the companies, OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, in December, accusing them of using its copyrighted news articles in building their online chatbots.)

In their suit, filed in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday, the couple said anonymous Lovo employees had paid them for a few voice clips in 2019 and 2020 without disclosing how the clips would be used.

They say Lovo, which was founded in 2019, is violating federal trademark law and several state privacy laws by promoting clones of their voices. The suit seeks class-action status, with Mr. Lehrman and Ms. Sage inviting other voice actors to join it.

“We don’t know how many other people have been affected,” their lawyer, Steve Cohen , said.

Lovo denies the claims in the suit, said David Case, a lawyer representing the company. He added that if all individuals who provided voice recordings to Lovo gave their consent, “then there is not a problem.”

Tom Lee, the company’s chief executive, said in a podcast episode last year that Lovo now offered a revenue-sharing program that allowed voice actors to help the company create voice clones of themselves and receive a cut of the money made by those clones.

The suit appears to be the first of its kind, said Jeffrey Bennett, general counsel for SAG-AFTRA, the labor union that represents 160,000 media professionals worldwide.

“This suit will show people — particularly technology companies — that there are rights that exist in your voice, that there is an entire group of people out there who make their living using their voice,” he said.

In 2019, Mr. Lehrman and Ms. Sage were promoting themselves as voice actors on Fiverr , a website where freelance professionals can advertise their work. Through this online marketplace, they were often asked to provide voice work for commercials, radio ads, online videos, video games and other media.

That year, Ms. Sage was contacted by an anonymous person who paid her $400 to record several radio scripts and explained that the recordings would not be used for public purposes, according to correspondence cited by the suit.

“These are test scripts for radio ads,” the anonymous person said, according to the suit. “They will not be disclosed externally, and will only be consumed internally, so will not require rights of any sort.”

Seven months later, another unidentified person contacted Mr. Lehrman about similar work. Mr. Lehrman, who also works as a television and movie actor, asked how the clips would be used. The person said multiple times that they would be used only for research and academic purposes, according to correspondence cited in the suit. Mr. Lehrman was paid $1,200. (He provided longer recordings than Ms. Sage did.)

In April 2022, Mr. Lehrman discovered a YouTube video about the war in Ukraine that was narrated by a voice that sounded like his.

“It is my voice talking about weaponry in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict,” he said. “I go ghost white — goose bumps on my arms. I knew I had never said those words in that order.”

For months, he and Ms. Sage struggled to understand what had happened. They hired a lawyer to help them track down who had made the YouTube video and how Mr. Lehrman’s voice had been recreated. But the owner of the YouTube channel seemed to be based in Indonesia, and they had no way to find the person.

Then they heard the podcast on their way to the doctor’s office. Through the podcast, “ Deadline Strike Talk ,” they were able to identify the source of Mr. Lehrman’s voice clone. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor had pieced the chatbot together using voice synthesis technology from Lovo.

Ms. Sage also found an online video in which the company had pitched its voice technology to investors during an event in Berkeley in early 2020. In the video, a Lovo executive showed off a synthetic version of Ms. Sage’s voice and compared it to a recording of her real voice. Both played alongside a photo of a woman who was not her.

“I was in their pitch video to raise money,” Ms. Sage said. The company has since raised more than $7 million and claims over two million customers across the globe.

Mr. Lehrman and Ms. Sage also discovered that Lovo was promoting voice clones of her and Mr. Lehrman on its website . After they sent the company a cease-and-desist letter, the company said it had removed their voice clones from the site. But Mr. Lehrman and Ms. Sage argued that the software that drove these voice clones had already been downloaded by an untold number of the company’s customers and could still be used.

Mr. Lehrman also questioned whether the company had used the couple’s voices alongside many others to build the core technology that drives its voice-cloning system. Voice synthesizers often learn their skills by analyzing thousands of hours of spoken words, in much the way that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other chatbots learn their skills by analyzing vast amounts of text culled from the internet.

Lovo acknowledged that it had trained its technology using thousands of hours of recordings of thousands of voices, according to correspondence in the suit.

Mr. Case, the lawyer representing Lovo, said that the company trained its A.I. system using audio from a freely available database of English recordings called Openslr.org. He did not respond when asked if Mr. Lehrman’s and Ms. Sage’s voice recordings had been used to train the technology.

“We hope to claw back control over our voices, over who we are, over our careers,” Mr. Lehrman said. “We want to represent others this has happened to and those that this will happen to if nothing changes.”
