IWPR is growing and adding new staff every quarter! The summer of 2023 saw us bring on six new team members and we're just getting started. Be sure to check out our slate of open positions and join our team today!

IWPR is an equal opportunity employer. We consider applicants without regard for race, ethnicity, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected status. IWPR’s work is supported by foundation grants, government grants and contracts, donations from individuals, and contributions from organizations. IWPR is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

IWPR seeks to observe the following  operating principles:

  • As an institution IWPR strives to work toward organizational sustainability to ensure maximum benefit for women and families over the long term
  • As a partner, IWPR strives for respectful collaboration, open communication, and on-time delivery of its promised contributions and focuses on forging common purpose on behalf of all women while acknowledging differences among them
  • As a place to work, IWPR strives to build an atmosphere in which staff take pleasure in doing their work, share in the joy of discovery and policy impact, and are valued fairly for their contributions; where initiative, innovation, and risk-taking are encouraged; and where staff members enjoy equal opportunity and are enabled to discuss freely their concerns about their working environment

In 2020, IWPR partnered with  Working Ideal  to conduct a compensation study to help ensure that our compensation program is in alignment with our values and the market. While many choose to work at mission-driven organizations because of their commitment to social change, we know fair and equitable compensation is key to attracting and retaining top talent. Recent research shows that traditional education and experience-based hiring and compensation models are a barrier to inclusive hiring. This equity issue is rooted in the educational attainment gap that exists by race and ethnicity. We hope that IWPR’s new experienced-based compensation framework is consistent and promotes equity and transparency for existing IWPR employees, applicants and new hires.  Click HERE to view the IWPR compensation program

Well, this is guac-ward.

Eating a small amount of avocado every day may lower a woman’s risk for Type 2 diabetes — but not for men who consume the green, creamy fruit, new research has found.

“There are several potential mechanisms to explain the observed association between avocado consumption and diabetes prevalence in this study,” the international team of authors wrote last week in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics .

“First, avocado has a lower glycemic index and sugar content, such as sucrose and glucose, than other fruits,” they continued. “Its main sugar is … a unique seven-carbon sugar that may help control blood glucose.”

The researchers pointed out that avocados also contain antioxidants and nutrients that can help improve insulin sensitivity, a hallmark of Type 2 diabetes.

Eating a small amount of avocado every day may lower a woman's risk for Type 2 diabetes — but not for men who consume the green, creamy fruit, new research has found.

Registered dietitian and doctor of public health  Wendy Bazilian , who was not involved in the study, emphasized to Healthline last week that avocados are a heart-healthy food.

“Given what we know about the nutritional profile of avocados — they have good unsaturated fats, a good source of fiber, and a multitude of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, I’m not surprised to see these findings suggesting that eating avocados may play a role in lower diabetes risk,” she said.

As for why a similar association was not found with the male participants, the researchers reasoned that the study featured a higher percentage of male smokers (about 38%) compared to female smokers (about 12%).

25,640 people who participated in the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey were eligible for this study — over 60% were considered overweight or obese.

Some 45% of participants were avocado consumers, with men eating 34.7 grams a day and women 29.8 grams a day on average.

A standard avocado serving is one-third of a medium avocado or about 50 grams.

The lowered diabetes risk for women was observed even when accounting for factors such as age, education level, weight and physical activity.

Avocados "have good unsaturated fats, a good source of fiber, and a multitude of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients," one registered dietitian noted.

As for why a similar association was not found with the male participants, the researchers reasoned that the study featured a higher percentage of male smokers (about 38%) compared to female smokers (about 12%).

“ Smokers are more likely to develop diabetes because exposure to nicotine can reduce the effectiveness of insulin,” they wrote, before noting that, “Men are more likely to engage in binge drinking than women. This behavior is associated with an increased risk for metabolic syndrome and diabetes.”

The researchers suggest a “more in-depth exploration” of the long-term effects of avocado consumption to better understand how avocados, sex and risk for diabetes are related.

All Women Need Mammograms Beginning at Age 40, Expert Panel Says

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter

women's health research jobs remote

TUESDAY, April 30, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- All women should start getting mammograms every other year beginning at age 40, the nation’s top panel of preventive health experts announced Tuesday.

About 20% more lives can be saved from breast cancer by moving the regular screening age up to age 40, rather than starting at age 50, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) estimates.

The task force based its recommendation partly on increasing rates of breast cancer in younger women.

“More women in their 40s have been getting breast cancer, with rates increasing about 2 percent each year, so this recommendation will make a big difference for people across the country,” Task Force Chair Dr. Wanda Nicholson said in a USPSTF news release.

U.S. Cities With the Most Homelessness

Previously, the task force recommended that women decide for themselves between ages 40 and 50 if they wanted regular breast cancer screening, based on their individual risk factors and preferences. All women were encouraged to start by age 50.

Now, all women between the ages 40 and 74 are urged to get a mammogram every other year, the USPSTF says.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death for women in the United States, the USPSTF said.

The task force also based its updated recommendation on modeling performed for the first time to look at the benefits of screening Black women.

Black women are 40% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women, and often get aggressive cancers at a young age, the USPSTF said.

“This new approach has even greater potential benefit for Black women, who are much more likely to die of breast cancer,” said Nicholson, who is a professor of prevention and community health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

USPSTF recommendations weigh heavily in the nation’s health care system. The Affordable Care Act requires that insurers cover the entire cost of screenings and services recommended by the task force.

The move marks a shift in the USPSTF’s approach to breast cancer, as their recommendations have tended to be more conservative than those of the American Cancer Society.

The ACS currently recommends that women make an individual decision whether they want to start mammograms between 40 and 44, and then receive annual screenings from 45 to 54. Women 55 and older can switch to every other year mammograms, or keep getting annual screenings.

The USPSTF still differs from the ACS in that it recommends mammograms every other year, while the ACS recommends annual mammography up to age 54.

In a statement, the American College of Radiology (ACR), which represents the nation's radiologists, said the new recommendations from the USPSTF still "do not go far enough to save more women’s lives."

The ACR will "continue to urge the USPSTF to recommend all women have a breast cancer risk assessment by age 25... and that women at average risk for breast cancer receive an annual mammography screening starting at age 40."

The USPSTF also has been hesitant to recommend mammograms past age 74, noting that not enough research has been done on the benefits and harms of continuing the screening into old age.

The task force also noted that nearly half of women have dense breasts, which increases their risk of breast cancer and means that mammograms might not work as well for them.

More research is needed into alternatives to mammograms for these women, potentially including breast ultrasound or MRI.

“Women deserve to have the best science available to guide them on how to protect their health, and we’re asking the research community to prioritize studies that can show us how best to screen for breast cancer in women with dense breasts,” Nicholson said.

“In the meantime, women with dense breasts should talk with their clinician about options for follow-up testing so that they can get the care that’s right for them,” Nicholson concluded.

The updated USPSTF recommendations and the evidence behind them are published April 30 in the Journal of the American Medical Association .
