Residential life and housing, mission statement.

Residential Life and Housing at VCU provides safe, inclusive, and well-maintained facilities where we work together to build intentional communities to empower residents in their academic excellence, citizenship, and personal growth.

Residential Life and Housing encompasses five units: Administrative Services, Business and Personnel Services, Facilities and Event Services, Residential Initiatives and Residential Life. Each of these areas is essential in providing a comprehensive residential experience. Our mission is to provide safe, inclusive and well-maintained facilities where we build intentional communities to empower residents in their academic excellence, citizenship and personal growth.

On-campus living creates an environment to help students succeed. Not only is on-campus housing steps away from academic resources, but living among classmates makes it easier to connect with friends, host study groups, or simply share resources. We offer a variety of on-campus housing options for both first-year and upper-class residents. On-campus housing offers more than just a place to sleep: it is an integral part of the VCU experience.

The comforts of home

With students who come from all over the world, home means something different to everyone. Luckily, we have plenty of options to make VCU and Richmond your home away from home.

Nearly 6,000 students live on campus, including most first-years. Residence halls at VCU come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional rooms to suites and apartments. All buildings have secure entrances and a 24-hour information desk, as well as laundry facilities, lounges, Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and furniture.

If you're a first-year student, living on campus isn't required — but we highly recommend it. You'll have more chances to get involved, connect with the university community and find your place at VCU.

A foodie’s paradise

People travel from all over to experience Richmond’s food scene. Yelp named us one of the “ Top 10 Foodie Cities ” in 2019 and Forbes called it a ”hidden culinary gem“ in 2021. Right in your backyard, you’ll find quirky coffee shops, Southern comfort food, taco bars, farm-to-table eateries, French cafes, food trucks, doughnut shops and more breweries than we know what to do with.

Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity

Division of student affairs, housing accommodations.

Living on campus can be a new and exciting experience for college students. Residential environments are important parts of Virginia Commonwealth University’s programs, especially for first-year and new students. VCU is committed to providing meaningful and accessible residential experiences for all students. In an effort to effectively respond to student requests for housing modifications or accommodations, we have created the Housing Accommodation Request Committee. This committee is made up of a group of VCU professionals representing Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity, Residential Life and Housing, University Counseling Services, and the University Student Health Services. This committee generally meets towards the end of each month, with increasing frequency at key times throughout the year.

Students interested in housing accommodations based on a medical, psychological, physical, or other disability-related impairment may submit their request to the Office of Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO).

The Housing Accommodation Request Committee will review requests throughout the year, so there is no formal deadline for submission. It is important to note that the housing assignments for accommodations are based on availability. If a student is approved for a housing accommodation but an appropriate placement is not available at that time, the student will be notified of the approved accommodation and relevant information about availability.   In order to increase your chances of receiving an appropriate assignment, please submit the Housing Accommodation Request Form and documentation well in advance of the new semester.

To formally submit a request, a student must:

1. complete the housing application.

Complete the standard  housing application process through Residential Life and Housing.

2. Submit the Housing Accommodation Request

Complete the Supplemental Form as outlined below.

  • Log into the Student Accommodate Portal .

Image of portal with accommodate outlined in red

All students seeking accommodation or disability-related supports for programs based on the Monroe Park Campus (including pre-Nursing and pre-Health) should follow the registration process with SAEO. In order to be eligible to receive accommodations, students must complete a three-step process of self-identification.

3. Submit Documentation

Submit documentation of the impairment/disability that supports the request. Appropriate documentation should meet the criteria set forth in the guidelines below.

Documentation Guidelines

In order for documentation to be considered, it must come from an appropriately licensed professional with whom the student has an established treatment relationship related to the accommodation being requested. The treatment provider must submit the necessary information on their professional letterhead, typed or written and clearly legible, and must date and sign the document.

In order to determine if a particular housing accommodation is necessary, the documentation provided should include the following:

  • Description of disability or impairment.
  • Information about the current functional impact of the condition or disability as it relates to the housing modification or accommodation requested.
  • Recommendation from the professional explaining the need for the accommodation as it relates to a disability/impairment.
  • If requesting an Emotional Support Animal (EAS), information about how the ESA is necessary to alleviate the impact of a disability or reduce the impact of a specific set of symptoms.

Documentation for Emotional Support Animals

VCU recognizes the tremendous benefit of Emotional Support Animals (ESA) can provide. In accordance with federal and state law, when approved as a housing accommodation, ESAs may be permitted to reside in the residence halls. Students must follow the same request process as they would for any other housing accommodation.

Please be aware, there is a great deal of misinformation available about what constitutes legitimate medical or otherwise supportive documentation for an ESA. An entire industry has popped up where websites offer to connect students with a legitimately licensed professional for the sole purpose of providing an "ESA Letter" based on a limited interaction/interview. Many licensed therapists across the country are willing to write letters supporting an ESA based on a single conversation either in person, over the phone, or on a tele-meeting platform (i.e., Zoom). These brief conversations often do not establish an appropriate treatment relationship between a student and the provider, so the documentation may not be considered applicable. Additionally, to date, the university is not aware of any official national or state accreditation or certification for EASs, despite there being many online organizations claiming as such. Please contact Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity to discuss whether or not a certain source of documentation would be deemed legitimate and valid.

Students look for housing as spring semester reaches final stretch

March 29, 2023 News Editor News 0

when do vcu housing assignments come out

Katie Farthing , Staff Writer

VCU students have begun to look for housing for the 2023-2024 school year.

Dorm prices tend to stay steady over the years, and if they do change it’s for a few reasons, according to Kevin Wade, senior associate director of administrative services with Residential Life and Housing.

“A lot of it has to do with just changes and expenses and quite frankly inflation changes or costs changes in general,” Wade said. “We look at off-campus rates, we look at rates of other institutions in state, we look at what our expenses are, we look at what projects need to be done.”

Johnson Hall closing didn’t change prices, but available beds decreased for returning students, according to Wade.

The closure resulted in students having a more stressful time applying for housing because there were more people and fewer available beds, according to Alamina Sesay, a sophomore computer engineering student.

Sesay is living in Cary and Belvidere Apartments, but applied for Broad & Belvidere, according to Sesay.

Upperclassmen housing is decided through a lottery system, and the amount of people that apply changes the odds of obtaining housing, according to Wade.

Sesay said she was only able to get into Cary and Belvidere because her roommate drew a low room selection number.

Room selection numbers are randomly generated and determine what date and time students are able to search for a room, according to VCU Housing .

“When my time slot came, they told me that if I wasn’t able to get a room with her, I would not have housing right now,” Sesay said. “I just feel like they need to do better with having spaces available, especially if they gave us a time slot.”

VCU Housing sends an email to students who cannot get on-campus housing to let them know, according to Wade.

“There’s the option to sign up to get on a housing waitlist because we know there’ll be some attrition and create some additional vacancies,” Wade said. “We also have resources available for off-campus housing.”

VCU Housing also offers an off-campus housing fair and workshops for students on its website .

“If any students that are looking for housing have concerns or questions about off campus, on campus, we’re here to assist and help,” Wade said.

Wade said Johnson Hall will return as part of VCU housing, along with another West Grace housing, though the timeline is still being worked out.

Maggie Short, a sophomore psychology student, is currently living in Cary and Belvidere with two other roommates. She previously lived in a single room in Gladding Residence Center, or GRC, according to Short.

“I feel like both Cary and Belvidere and GRC have serious mold and dust issues,” Short said. “I was violently ill for a month and I feel like some of that had to do with indoor seasonal allergies.”

Johnson Hall was closed due to “elevated mold spores” last year, according to a previous article from The Commonwealth Times .

“There’s a protocol in place that if a student has concern over mold or air quality, whatever the situation may be, that the university does various checks and testing,” Wade said. “That’s really the main thing we’re doing. What needs to be done to prevent that from happening?”

Mekhi Ricks, a freshman finance student, will be living in Cary and Belvidere next year. The housing application process was fairly easy, according to Ricks.

“I had a leader of my group, basically, and she set everything up,” Ricks said. “All I had to do was fill out the application and go through all those steps.”

Some students live at home and commute to school to save money, according to Sharese Ogburn, a freshman pre-radiation student.

Ogburn said commuting has been okay this year but sometimes she feels like she misses out.

“Sometimes when I have fun, I’m like ‘Oh, I don’t wanna go home,’ and I wish I lived on campus,” Ogburn said. “But other times I’m tired of people, so I’m happy I get to go home.”

Commuting has been a good experience so far, according to Gisselle Pacas, a freshman health services student.

“The only thing that’s a struggle is the parking,” Pacas said.

Claire Dilday, a senior environmental studies student, lived in Johnson Hall her freshman year and is currently off-campus.

“I liked it more than when I went into Rhoads and Brandt, those were the worst ones,” Dilday said. “Living in Johnson on my floor wasn’t bad.”

Dilday said she hasn’t lived in many places in Richmond, but her rent budget has changed over the years.

“I get more income now so my budget for rent is a little different,” Dilday said. “It’s not as much of the money that I get, it used to be pretty much everything I had.”

Jenna Bartalone, a senior environmental studies student, said students need to be careful during the house hunting process.

“I think that you have to be really careful about where you live,” Bartalone said. “You have to make sure if you do decide to live off campus, to ask the right questions so you don’t get screwed over.”
