Rocky Movie Review: A meditative study on violence, a terrific directorial debut
Rating: ( 4 / 5).
Rocky may seem like it’s in love with violence. I mean, necks are slit, eyes are gouged, and intestines get worn like garlands. And yet, it’s crucial to note that this film encourages plenty of contemplation—the kind you see its self-deprecatory protagonist, Rocky (Vasanth Ravi, whose deep-set eyes communicate a lot of unspoken anguish), often get preoccupied with. What are we, men, who are killing each other? What is this world that doesn’t seem to care? Through its use of wide shots, this film really drums in the sheer absurdity of all the violence, and why, even the very loneliness of existence. A film in love with violence wouldn’t introspect as much as Rocky does. The first chapter, for instance, is named: ‘ Ungamma unna yen pethaanga theriyuma? ’ Towards the end of the chapter, we get the answer, a punchline if you will, from Rocky. And yet, if you sat him down for a conversation, I dare say that he would likely disassociate himself from a parting punchline he delivers during the height of bloodlust. Rocky, after all, through long, lonely walks, and the ensuing fatigue that he hopes will provide him with some relief from the all-consuming guilt and regret plaguing him, has already realised that his life has spiralled out of control—and worse, that it’s just the beginning. Like many, who unwilling to accept responsibility, blame destiny, Rocky blames time in a charming sequence that doubles as a superb replacement for a conventional song. He calls time a sinner, a disease. And yet, time, as he knows, is indifferent; it doesn’t care about his accusations. That’s why within the same ‘song’, he recognises himself as a ‘beast’, an animal that’s ultimately feeding on self, for, as this film astutely notes, nobody benefits from violence, least of all the hapless women around these ‘beasts’. It’s incredible that Rocky communicates these ideas without the crutch of dialogues.
Director: Arun Matheswaran
Cast: Vasanth Ravi, Bharathiraja, Raveena Ravi, Rohini
The visual imagery in Rocky is gorgeous. There’s noir-esque black and white imagery; there’s a great eye for interplay between light and shadow, for striking use of colours like blue and yellow. Static shots, and I don’t use this lightly, seem like moving paintings. The wide shots don’t just exist to provide eye-catching imagery for the movie theatre screen; it serves to establish, with all the use of empty space, the apathy of nature, the absence of a benevolent deity. Indeed, there’s much scathing commentary on the concept of God, with the film beginning by stating the God Paradox (can God make a mountain he cannot lift?). At one point, Rocky speaks of how God cursed him, while the Devil embraced him. Perhaps it’s most revealing that when Rocky displays his unusual capacity for cruelty, he claims to be… God.
I enjoyed that Rocky doesn’t pay much heed to its straightforward plot or the potential to turn into a conventional gangster revenge film. The plot is very much there, yes, and armed with a screenplay that travels back and forth to reveal just the right amount of information each time. However, the film’s real focus is on exploring and presenting the mentality of this man who’s caught in a vicious cycle of vengeful violence and consequent retribution. It employs monologues and surreal imagery to capture the inescapable, Sisyphean plight of this anti-hero.
Given the film’s unflinching gaze on violence, it’s natural to be reminded of Korean cinema, and of the likes of Tarantino. A glorious pre-interval tussle between one and many feels like an ode to that famous fight sequence in Old Boy , as Rocky , tired and yet, relentless, piles on the bodies, even as he manoeuvres his way upwards through narrow corridors. An unforgettable visual is of Manimaran (a layered, menacing Bharathiraja) gazing almost in admiration, as a static shot—like in a video game—has us gasping at the full impact of what Rocky has done and is doing. Any film that has a chapter-division is going to get us thinking of Tarantino, let alone one with as much violence. There are what seemed to me to be other homages as well: An old Telugu song plays as a throat gets slit. Later, a car bonnet comes crashing on a man’s head over and over again—how do you not think of that Kill Bill scene in which a door gets slammed against a man’s face? As Rocky, a stone-cold killer, turns guardian for a vulnerable little girl, I also found myself thinking of Leon, The Professional . None of this is to suggest that Rocky is an imitation or that it lacks originality. I mean these comparisons as compliments. The film is very much its own, and even its setting speaks of an unspeakable cruelty in a neighbouring country. Much of the cruelty we see in the film happens by the sea, but it’s impossible not to hear the whispers of horror from what’s happening across it. Among the film’s many questions is one: In a world that’s as irrationally cruel, of what use is appealing to the mercy of a deity?
Darbuka Siva’s experimental background score is a heady pleasure as well. Guitars come to the party suddenly. Just when you think you have got a grasp of the film and its reluctance to use songs, a full-blown emotional song plays in the background to define a sibling reunion. A thrilling action set-piece plays out to mridangams . The best of the lot is that opening ‘song’, that lament against time from a resigned Rocky. You can spot similar resignation in Bharathiraja’s Manimaran as well, especially at the end when he lets out a wry smile. You see similar half-smiles from Rocky throughout the film, particularly when consumed by the high of vengeance. These aren’t men on opposite sides of morality; they are rather similar in a sense, these lonely men, driven to unstoppable violence by a thirst for revenge.
As deep films so often do, Rocky incites reflection. I caught myself thinking of existentialist philosopher Martin Heidegger and his concept of ‘thrownness’ (to describe the feeling that we are arbitrarily ‘thrown’ into this world). It almost feels like Rocky and Manimaran contemplate something similar as they so often stand as lonely figures, the violence from and around them almost incomprehensible, and seemingly unavoidable. I enjoyed Rocky for inspiring such reflection, and for director Arun Matheswaran’s refusal to create a factory product with this plot. It may not be a perfect film—the performances sometimes feel rather rough on the edges, a deus ex machina at the end seems rather convenient—but it displays such a courageous tendency to stray from the ordinary that these tiny missteps don’t matter. For instance, Rocky, in a scene, is beaten bloody while forced to witness a horrific murder. Where normal films would exploit such a scene for tragedy, director Arun Matheswaran takes us away into surreal imagery to explore Rocky’s mind, as he is forced to process trauma and guilt. It’s a refreshingly deep creative choice from a filmmaker who, with Rocky , has made one of the more memorable debuts in Tamil cinema. Here’s hoping the authenticity of this voice remains as fierce in the years to come.

A full house screamed throughout last night’s Times Square premiere of “Jailer,” a grisly and comedic action Indian thriller starring Rajinikanth, the marquee-topping, Tamil-speaking septuagenarian and self-advertised “Super Star.” Or at least, everybody alive in that auditorium seemed to be cheering for Rajinikanth.
Rajinikanth (“Robot,” “Kaala”) is now 72 years old. His “Jailer” character, a retired cop and prison warden named Muthu “ Tiger ” Pandian, has a sassy young grandson and a knack for murdering villains. Beheadings and fatal stabbings are a Muthu specialty. He also has a vast network of shady old friends, played by a deep bench of Indian character actors and fellow leading men, who help Muthu kill the bad men who threaten his family.
In “Jailer,” the bad men are led by Varman (Vinayakan), a manic crime boss who kidnaps Muthu’s adult son Arjun ( Vasanth Ravi ), also a cop, and threatens to behead Arjun’s grandson Rithvik (Rithvik Jothi Raj), an aspiring YouTube star, while Rithvik and Muthu get ice cream. Varman’s men taunt Muthu by doing a grotesque dance of joy in the street. He retaliates by hacking at some of them with a gigantic blade: “After a point I don’t talk, I slash.” If you come to “Jailer” for anything but Rajinikinath, you will probably leave disappointed.
“Jailer” simultaneously is and isn’t a typical Rajinikanth vehicle. It’s more self-conscious and more committed than some of his other recent vehicles, as far as reconciling the tonal whiplash banked into the Indian cinema’s kitchen sink, mass-audience-minded masala style. The makers of “Jailer” toggle between emotional registers with confidence and alarming frequency, like whenever Muthu helps Rithvik film a gardening program for his YouTube channel, and then resumes his bloody feud with Varman. In a musical montage that only makes sense after a long-delayed plot twist, Muthu and Rithvik bask in each other’s company while an acoustic guitar plays and a singer paints a sunny picture of a man who, in Rithvik, also sees “my leader ... my son.” Meanwhile, Arjun tortures one of Varman’s men, and also orders a fellow cop to not give water to his blood-soaked victim. The acoustic guitarist never takes a break.
The persistent extremity of Varman’s character-defining violence also gives old man Rajinikanth a mandate to be merciless. It’s sometimes even touching to see him match Varman since, as our antihero’s theme song boasts, “He will make your next generation dance to his tunes.” Rajinikanth is perhaps unusual when compared to, say, a Sylvester Stallone or a Steven Seagal , in that he still attracts the sort of young idolatrous filmmakers who all seem obsessed with making the now biologically mature star look eternally iconic. A friend who saw “Jailer” in Los Angeles last night joked about how many times Rajinikanth enters a new room with dramatic flair. In Times Square, each new slow-motion turn to the camera was met with screams. So were Rajinikanth’s lusty action scenes, especially when he finally notices Varman’s barrels of sulphuric acid.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell if director Nelson Dilipkumar knows what he’s doing, either with his star or this movie’s volatile mix of tones and styles. “Beast,” Dilipkumar’s loopy third-generation “ Die Hard ” clone, gives some helpful context since “Beast” pits the relatively young four-quadrant star Vijay against a shopping mall full of terrorists, one of whom he also beheads. In “Jailer,” Muthu is an older man with a legacy to consider. On-screen, Rajinikanth occasionally bumps his head against his emotional range’s low ceiling, like when Muthu cries about Arjun’s fate. In this scene, Rajinikanth leans as hard into his angles as he does whenever Muthu loses it and cackles like a lunatic with a secret.
Before an “INTERMISSION” intertitle flashed across the screen—they never pause for intermission at the AMC Empire 25—Muthu tells us that now that he’s got nothing to lose, he can stop juggling three different faces and just wear one. He says this to his family members after he warns them to stay perfectly still, so that he and his action-pose-ready friends can pick off some more bad men. After the “INTERMISSION” title, there’s an extensive new subplot involving an extra-marital affair, a bad toupee, the comedian Sunil, and the starlet Tamannaah Bhatia . Everybody acts as a version of themselves in “Jailer,” but only Rajinikanth’s performance pulls everything together by sheer willpower.
Rajinikanth is 72 years old, so it’s weirdly moving to see that, every two or three years, he can still crank out a freewheeling star vehicle as vigorous and exhausting as “Jailer.” Just outside Theater 25, I overheard a 40-something-year-old man ask an older companion what he thought about “Jailer.” I couldn’t make out the older fellow’s response, but his chuckle and little shake of the head suggested that he was still enjoying Rajinikanth’s eternal summer.

When a pair of petty criminals attempt to rob his small-town diner, Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) quickly and easily kills them both. In the flush of news coverage of Tom's seemingly heroic actions, a threatening stranger named Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) comes to town, fingering the unassuming family man as long-missing Philadelphia mobster Joey Cusack. To the horror of his wife, Edie (Maria Bello), and teenage son, Jack (Ashton Holmes), Tom finds he must confront his violent past.

Critic Reviews for A History of Violence
Audience reviews for a history of violence.
Probably Cronenberg's most mundane work, but that's not even remotely a knock against A History of Violence. I hear tell that fans of the comic don't much like this big screen re-telling, but I've never read it, so I'm gonna go ahead and really enjoy it anyway.
A History of Violence stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, a restaurant owner in small town Indiana living with his wife (Maria Bello) and two kids. Tom's life takes a turn when he stops two robbers attempting to murder his customers and steal his money. I had no prior knowledge going into this movie aside from the fact that it's on the list of YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann's "50 movies of the 2000's to see before you die." I was immediately intrigued by the opening sequence involving the two robbers, and Mortensen and family reeled me in the rest of the way. The family dynamic was effectively established, especially between Mortensen and Bello. The teenage son, played by Ashton Holmes, also played a big role, clearly developing his arc based on his father's actions. The school bully the son has to deal with was ridiculously overacted, though. I used the word "intriguing" earlier, and that's how I'd define this movie overall. Without spoiling anything, I will say that Mortensen delivers a heck of a performance with extreme contrasts in his character motives. The movie is equal parts cause and effect, my favorite aspect being the effect. There's a scene before the final act that really stands out, and, unfortunately, the movie dies down from there. William Hurt's character is introduced with under 20 minutes left of film (including credits), and his average performance garnered him an Oscar nomination for supporting actor despite having less screen time than Godzilla in the new Godzilla movie (under 7 minutes - I went back and timed it). He wasn't bad, but there wasn't enough there to justify the nomination. Overall, A History of Violence is a solid movie about family dynamics. Despite a weak ending, I enjoyed Mortensen and Bello a lot. If you enjoy solid acting and don't mind a bit of blood, give this one a watch. Final grade: B-
A mundane and dire crime drama, A History of Violence is a poorly adapted graphic novel. The story follows a mild-mannered diner owner named Tom Stall who becomes a celebrated hero after thwarting a robbery, but his fame soon attracts a Philadelphia mob boss who suspect that he's actually a hitman named Joey Cusack. The casting is especially impressive, and includes Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt. However, David Cronenberg's directing doesn't work for the material; it's raw and slow-paced, with no clear focus. A History of Violence has some interesting concepts, but the execution's weak.
Superficially it looks and plays like a common thriller but when you start digging deep onto the characters and motivates their violent acts, things start to get rather scary and unpredictable and that's the true success of one of the most straightforward Cronenberg's flick. Boosted by brilliant performances with a great balance between tender, sappy moments and truly striking violent imagery, A History of Violence is a nice change in narrative format from Cronenberg with great results that appeal to a more mainstream audiences.

The answers are many. According to film historian Theodore Baskaran, violence has always been looked upon as a form of entertainment in cinema. In fact, Baskaran said that in the Sixties, it wasn't unusual for Tamil films to advertise that a movie had "six songs, two fights, and one rape scene".
It both eludes and inflicts violence, without reason. This film, too, is based on a true story. Parvathy. Dhanush. Pariyerum Perumal. Aaranya Kaandam. Manusangada. From Maryan to Aaranya Kandam - these films are a study of Tamil Cinema's flirtation with violence, abductions, caste, and chaos.
