Research and innovation

Researchers in lab

Our philosophy is clear and time-tested: the creation of new knowledge through research depends on educational excellence and graduate education is perfected through research. Our graduate students, and the work they do, illustrate this synergistic relationship. This Wisconsin tradition is built on a foundation of world-class faculty, diverse students determined to succeed, research innovation and facilities and programs second to none.

Pancreatic cancer is difficult to treat. Nano-drugs hitching a ride on bacteria could help.

These jacks-of-all-trades are masters, too: yeast study helps answer age-old biology question, nanomaterial that mimics proteins could be basis for new neurodegenerative disease treatments, undergrads embrace opportunity to showcase research at symposium, investing in graduate education.

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) plays an essential role in supporting the innovative research and graduate education that are cornerstones of the University of Wisconsin–Madison.  These profiles illustrate the diverse and important ways that WARF contributes to graduate student success at UW–Madison.

Fernanda Szewc

UW-Whitewater graduate one of 15 family members to attend the university

W HITEWATER, Wis. (WMTV) - Saturday was a special day for seniors at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, with hundreds of students graduating from several programs.

Ty Jahnke, one of this year’s student speakers, is one of 15 family members to go to UW-Whitewater.

“You know what, it was probably kindergarten when my mom first brought me to this campus,” he said. “Ever since then, this is the only place I was going to apply and it’s the only school I did apply.”

The Watertown native says the family tradition is in place for good reason.

“I’ve truly enjoyed the experience. I was a part of multiple things on campus. I was an athlete, I was an RA and those things really shaped who I am now.”

Julie Zaborowski earned a B.A. in Social Work and has already secured a position in Madison.

“I’ll be an adoption coordinator and so I’ll be setting up for families who unfortunately don’t want the child and setting them up with a potential foster family who do want children,” she said. “If you’re still in college, don’t wish your life away, don’t try and grow up too fast because I promise you it’s coming, it’s coming fast.”

Each student’s college journey is different.

“Growing up, everyone was always saying they wanted to be a teacher, firefighter, policeman. I just didn’t know what I wanted to do until after I had kids,” Katrina Badertscher said. “I was content where I was. And then some things happened that made me want to get a better degree so to open up more opportunities. I’m very happy with that decision.”

Badertscher graduated with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education with a dual license in Early Childhood, Regular Education, and Special Education.

Jahnke, graduating with an M.A. in Applied Kinesiology, says it is up to each student to make the most out of their college career.

“Get involved, you know, do things on campus, don’t just sit in your room. Play a sport, be an RA, do a clever organization, do something, meet people. You know, this is the time to grow, to get connections for life,” he said.

All three students are a part of UW-Whitewater’s ‘ Hired Before Graduation’ campaign. The tradition showcases students who have already decided what their next step is, whether it is a full-time job, graduate school, or starting their own business.
