Aller Anfang ist schwer. Das gilt vor allem auch, wenn du einen Essay für die Uni oder Fachhochschule schreiben möchtest. Manchmal fühlst du dich vielleicht einfach nicht inspiriert oder organisiert genug, um deine Gedanken gut zu artikulieren. Aber keine Sorge – mit ein wenig Planung, Recherche und harter Arbeit wird es dir viel leichter fallen, mit der Arbeit an einem Essay anzufangen. Jeder Essay beginnt mit einer Einleitung, in welcher du deine wichtigsten Argumente nennst. Dabei solltest du das Interesse deiner Leser wecken und deine Hauptthese beschreiben. Die Hauptthese erklärt den eigentlichen Streitpunkt deines Aufsatzes. Wenn du lernen möchtest, wie du am besten mit der Arbeit an einem Essay beginnst, folge einfach den angegebenen Schritten.

Vorgehensweise

Lege mit der arbeit los.

• Anzahl der Wörter. Wenn dein Essay nur 500 Wörter lang sein soll, wird er sehr verschieden von einem Aufsatz mit 2.000 Worten sein. Achte auf die Vorgaben zur Anzahl der Wörter und halte diese ein. Abweichungen von 10% sind dabei zulässig. Dein Dozent soll ja nicht deiner überdrüssig werden, nur weil dein Essay viel kürzer oder länger als vorgegeben ist.
• Umfang der erforderlichen Recherche. In einigen Kursen musst du vielleicht Essays schreiben, die viel eigene Recherche außerhalb des Kurses verlangen. Bei anderen sollst du vielleicht überwiegend das Kursmaterial, wie Romane, oder die Kursbücher benutzen und dann deine eigenen Schlussfolgerungen daraus ziehen. Trotzdem gilt, dass jeder gute Essay vor allem von solider Recherche bestimmt wird.
• Wenn du irgendwelche Fragen hast, solltest du rechtzeitig vor dem Abgabedatum mit deinem Dozenten oder Lehrer sprechen. So kannst du alle Dinge klären, bevor du mit der Arbeit beginnst.

• Der überzeugende / argumentative Essay. In dieser Form von Essay sollst du den Leser von deiner Perspektive auf ein Thema oder einen Gegenstand überzeugen. Ein argumentativer Essay wäre beispielsweise einer, welcher den Lesern alle Gründe auflistet, warum Waffen verboten sein sollten.
• Der analytische Essay. Diese Art von Essay ist am häufigsten in Literaturkursen gefragt. Meist liest man ein bestimmtes Werk und analysiert in dem Essay dann dessen Worte, Motive, Charaktere und die Bedeutung. Sowohl deine eigenen Ideen als auch die von anderen wissenschaftlichen Quellen sind hier gefragt.
• Der erklärende Essay. Diese Art von Essay basiert auf einem Prozess oder einer Situation und erläutert wichtige Aspekte zu diesem Thema. Ein Beispiel wäre eine Beschreibung des Alltags von Studenten.
• Der Forschungsaufsatz. Bei dieser Art von Essay wirst du ein Thema bzw. einen Gegenstand genauer erforschen und deine Leser über dessen Geschichte, Anwendung und Relevanz informieren.
• Der vergleichende und kontrastierende Essay. Hier wirst du zwei Themen bzw. Gegenstände miteinander vergleichen und gegenüberstellen, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede aufzuzeigen. Ein Beispiel dafür wäre ein Essay, der das Leben in Berlin mit dem in Moskau vergleicht.

• Wenn du eine Forschungsarbeit über ein Thema schreibst, dass den Lesern vielleicht vollkommen unbekannt ist, musst du die vorgefundenen Forschungsergebnisse detailliert erklären.

• Wenn du beispielsweise ein Gedicht oder Theaterstück analysieren möchtest, solltest du überzeugende Textstellen in deinen Aufsatz einarbeiten, die deine Gedanken unterstützen.
• Wenn du etwas vergleichen und gegenüberstellen möchtest, musst du dir über die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der beiden Gegenstände im Klaren sein.
• Wenn du mit deinem Aufsatz über etwas informieren möchtest, musst du dieses Thema genau erforschen und deinen Lesern dabei helfen, es besser zu verstehen.

• Dein Sprachstil spiegelt deine Haltung gegenüber einem Thema wider. Ist dein Stil eher distanziert, amüsiert, leicht zynisch, misstrauisch oder eher leidenschaftlich? Ganz gleich, welchen Stil du wählst – er sollte immer dem Gegenstand bzw. dem Thema angemessen sein.
• Wenn du beispielsweise einen Aufsatz über Stammzellenforschung schreibst, sollte dein Stil objektiv und distanziert sein. Wenn du einen Essay über Internet-Dating verfasst, kannst du eher einen lustigeren oder spielerischen Stil verwenden.

Formuliere deine These

• Achte darauf, nur glaubwürdige Quellen zu zitieren. Diese sollten von anerkannten Fachleuten stammen und nicht von einer kurzen Recherche bei Wikipedia.
• Mache dir so viele Notizen, bis du dich gut mit dem Thema auskennst.
• Informiere dich über die Formatierungsregeln für Quellenzitate, so dass du diese in deinem Essay anwenden kannst.

• Streitbarkeit
• Belegbarkeit
• Genauigkeit
• Verwendung der 3. Person

• Eine These für einen analytischen Essay: „Die drei Hauptmotive in „The Great Gatsby“ sind Einsamkeit, die Korruption des Reichtums und der Verlust der großen Liebe.“
• Eine These für einen argumentativen Essay: „Der Abiturdurchschnitt sollte nicht über die Zulassung an eine Universität entscheiden, da er die Intelligenz nicht akkurat misst und darüber hinaus sozioökonomisch behaftet ist.“
• Eine These für einen erläuternden Essay: „Die meisten Schülerinnen und Schüler verbringen ihre Zeit damit, Hausaufgaben, Freunde und außerschulische Aktivitäten miteinander in Einklang zu bringen.“

• Einleitung: 1. Aufhänger, 2. Drei wichtige Aussagen 3. These
• Hauptteil Absatz 1: Sehenswürdigkeiten: 1. Restaurants, 2. Clubs und Bars, 3. Museen
• Hauptteil Absatz 2: Wetter: 1. Schöner Winter, 2. Angenehmer Frühling, 3. Erfrischender Regen
• Hauptteil Absatz 3: Arbeitsmarkt: 1. Möglichkeiten in den Bereichen Finanzen und Wirtschaft, 2. Möglichkeiten im Bereich Kunst und Kultur, 3. Networking-Möglichkeiten
• Fazit: 1. Komme wieder auf den Aufhänger zurück, 2. Nenne nochmals die wichtigsten Punkte, 3. Nenne die These

Schreibe die Einleitung

• Die rhetorische Frage. Eine Frage hilft dabei, den Leser in die Debatte einzubeziehen und zum Nachdenken anzuregen. Beispielsweise könnte ein Aufsatz, der sich für die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe ausspricht, mit der Frage beginnen: „Sollte nicht jedem erlaubt sein, die Person zu heiraten, die man liebt?“
• Eine schockierende Aussage oder Statistik. Mit einer schockierenden Aussage oder Statistik, die relevant für deinen Themenbereich sind, kannst du ebenfalls die Aufmerksamkeit der Leser gewinnen. Wenn du beispielsweise einen Aufsatz über Depressionen unter Universitätsstudenten schreibst, kannst du mit einer (erforschten und nachweisbaren) Aussage beginnen, wie „Über 10% der aktuellen Universitätsstudenten leiden unter Depressionen.“
• Eine Anekdote. Beginne deinen Essay mit einer kurzen Anekdote, die für das Thema relevant ist. Richtig formuliert kann dies ebenfalls das Interesse deiner Leser wecken. Wenn du zum Beispiel über die Schwierigkeiten alleinerziehender Mütter schreibst, könntest du mit folgendem Satz beginnen: „Jane kämpfte darum über die Runden zu kommen, während sie sich um ihren Sohn Jason kümmerte.“

• Einen Aufhänger, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Leser zu gewinnen
• Eine kurze Darstellung der wichtigsten Punkte, die im Hauptteil des Essays genauer erläutert werden
• Die Formulierung der These

Die nächsten Schritte

• Ein Einleitungssatz, der den Inhalt des jeweiligen Paragraphen zusammenfasst.
• Unterstützende Informationen, Beweise, Fakten oder Statistiken, die das Hauptargument stützen
• Ein abschließender Satz, der die Gedanken des Absatzes zusammenfasst und zum nächsten Absatz überleitet

• Deine These nochmals nennen.
• Die Leser an die Hauptgedanken erinnern.
• Auf die Statistik, die Anekdote oder die Fakten vom Anfang hinweisen. (optional)
• Den Leser zur Reflexion und zum Nachdenken inspirieren

• Du solltest die Verwendung der 1. und 2. Person vermeiden. Sage nicht „Sie“, sondern „man“ bzw. „er oder sie“. Statt zu sagen „Ihr solltet 3-5 Stunden pro Woche lernen, wenn Ihr Eure Uni erfolgreich abschließen möchtet.“ solltest du lieber schreiben: „Universitätsstudenten sollten 3-5 Stunden pro Woche lernen, um ihr Studium erfolgreich abzuschließen.“.

• Wenn du das Gefühl hast, dass der Essay fertig und schlüssig ist, kannst du ihn auf Rechtschreibung und Grammatik Korrektur lesen.
• Wenn du einen wirklich guten Essay schreiben möchtest, solltest du sehr sorgfältig daran arbeiten. Um die beste Note zu erzielen, musst du deine Arbeitsschritte planen und mehrere Rohfassungen anfertigen. Schreibe deine Gedanken in logischer Reihenfolge auf. Denke daran, dass das Hauptziel deines Essays darin besteht, die Aufmerksamkeit der Leser zu gewinnen. Das letzte Wort sollte daher deiner Leserschaft überlassen bleiben.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary BA and MA programs. Most courses are taught in German, but English-language options especially in British and American Studies, Social Science, History, and Media Studies are also available. Furthermore, courses taught in French and Spanish are available in the fields of literature and linguistics.

This program introduces students to central aspects of Christian theology and the effects and influence of Christianity on European culture. Courses take an interdenominational approach that fosters the critical and constructive examination of confessional differences.

Film Studies

(EMa, Ma & Mi)

The  program in History has an interdisciplinary focus and offers an in-depth introduction to antiquity, the Middle Ages, the modern era and historical sub-disciplines. Students in this program obtain fundamental knowledge of the field, interdisciplinary methodological competence and core skills. Lively excursions and historical projects deepen and extend the course content.

Language and Communication

(1Ma, EMa, Ma & Mi)

This program degree gives students an in-depth introduction to linguistics. Depending on the choice of study models students can select one or two language specialisations (German, English, French or Spanish). The study of language in general and the individual languages does not solely focus on their form and structure, but also addresses inter-language communicative practices and knowledge structures and thus the function of language as a medium at the interface of the individual, interaction, society and culture.

Language, Communication and Economics in Europe (international study program)

This binational and three-year full-time program is offered by the University of Siegen and the University of Orléans (France) in cooperation with the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule (DFH). It combines the fields of applied linguistics, foreign languages (French and English) and economics, and it concludes with a German-French double degree Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Licence Langues Étrangères Appliquées (LEA).

Literature, Culture and Media  

Students choosing the Bachelor degree program Literature, Culture and Media concentrate on the literature, culture and media of a specific (foreign) language area. The program crosses language and subject boundaries: German, English and Romance Studies unite in literary and cultural inquiry, combined with elements from Media Studies.

• Media Studies

This program introduces students to the full scope and diversity of Media Studies. In addition to the specialized training which to examine media of all types from a spectrum of disciplines, depending on the choice of study model students obtain applied training that opens up future career prospects. Long-standing partnerships with leading experts from media practice ensure the quality of this program.

Students gain an understanding of the foundational systematic areas of philosophy and the key stages in the discipline’s historical development. Another important goal of the program is to investigate and to convey the historically grounded potential of the discipline to develop theories and offer orientation for action.

Play and Games Studies

• Social Sciences

The first year provides an in-depth introduction to Social Science, in the following semesters students can choose to specialize in Political Science or in Sociology. Interdisciplinarity and research relevance guarantee a wide-ranging sociology program in terms of both content and approach.

Social Sciences in Europe ( international study program)

A particular focus in this four-year bachelor degree program lies on comparative analyses of countries and societies, Europe, international relations, transnationalism and globalisation. The opportunities, risks and the current challenges associated with European integration are analysed both theoretically and empirically, and possible implications for the future of the European project are critically discussed. The international profile of the degree program is also based on an integrated year of studies at one of the following partner universities: University Jyväskylä in Finland, University Karlstad in Sweden or University Wrocław in Poland. Upon successful completion, graduates are qualified to enter one-year or two-year Master programs.

Advanced Literature Studies: Literature, Culture and Media

(1Ma, Ma & Mi)

The program focuses on research-related involvement with the fundamentals and history of and current trends in literary, cultural and media theories and approaches; independent and critical analysis of intertextual and cross-media aspects of fiction and non-fiction texts and media products; the development of media-specific forms of communication and the production of corresponding texts. Students choose a language-field specialization: English, German (Middle High German or Modern German Literature), or Romance Languages.

(Ma & Mi) The master's program in Christian Theologies in Ecumenical Perspective provides you with in-depth aspects of Christian theologies and their influences on European culture. The degree program takes an interdenominational standpoint. Topics are therefore examined from the perspectives of both Roman Catholic and Protestant theological traditions.

Culture, History, Society

Culture, History, Society is an interdisciplinary Master’s degree program, involving the disciplines of English Studies, Architectural History, Protest Theology, German Studies, History, Catholic Theology, Art History, Media Studies, Musicology, Philosophy, Romance Studies, and Social Sciences. The program addresses the complex connection between culture and society and thus addresses the major problems of our present day.

Drama Teaching

Students enrolled in the supplementary Drama Teaching course receive pedagogical training in on-stage activities related to the theoretical, artistic, practical, and didactic-methodological aspects of drama teaching. Students completing the program will be qualified to act as facilitators in communication between the theater and the public, to launch and manage amateur theater groups of all ages and in different environments and to apply theater-performance methods in teaching and learning situations both to communicate specific content and to promote social learning.

The Minor Subject History encourages acquisition not only of in-depth historical knowledge in the context of the latest international research developments but also of advanced methodological and interdisciplinary key skills.

Linguistics: digital, applied, structural (1Ma)

Media and society (interdisciplinary) (interdisciplinary study program).

This program is the product of a cutting edge program model that combines two of the following three subjects:

• Economics (corporate leadership and media management)

and one interdisciplinary area of studies. The program combines theory and practice from these disciplines and familiarizes students with the latest academic and scientific research findings and methods. Small learning groups and unconventional teaching methods are designed to promote creativity and develop students’ potential for innovation.

Media Culture

This degree program develops students’ cultural skills and independent thought: in both research and practice students examine the phenomenon of the media in globally networked and differentiated forms of society in order to – with the appropriate objectivity – develop their own stance and be able to undertake successful action. Students are equipped with skills that enable them to take responsibility for their culture and knowledge. The focus on research in the Media Culture Master program not only prepares the students for an academic career but also qualifies graduates for innovative tasks in media-related professional fields.

Students of Philosophy can choose from a wide spectrum of subjects with specialisations in epistemology, philosophy of mind, ontology, practical philosophy and the history of philosophy. Roads to Democracies is an international, interdisciplinary and research-oriented program. Combining methods and approaches from history, political science and sociology, the program aims to provide students with knowledge of and insights into the development of democracies. The interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on political, historical, social, socio-economic and cultural aspects of democratic ideas, institutions and structures within and outside Europe.   

The Master of Arts in Social Sciences is an interdisciplinary postgraduate course that focuses on the theories, issues and methods used in international and intercultural comparative political science and sociology. Students learn first-hand about the research questions currently at the centre of social science discourse and the methods employed to seek answers to these questions. Attendance at conferences and summer schools is an integral part of the Curriculum, and students have the opportunity to take part in the current research projects conducted by Siegen’s faculty and academic staff.

Social Sciences in Europe

Social Sciences in Europe imparts research-oriented, theory-based and interdisciplinary knowledge based on the current international state of research in the social sciences. The focus is on providing the factual and methodological foundations to conduct research, critically evaluate analyses, and develop responsible solutions. The focus is on the diversity of social and political realities and the complex transformation and transnationalization processes of the present.
