12 years of bKash: an era of empowerment

Just an era has passed, and millions of people now no longer need to worry about sending money to someone or standing in long queues to pay utility bills.

Those days are gone, thanks to the Mobile Financial Services (MFS) provider bKash, reads a press release.

12 years back, no one thought these financial services could be available in the comfort of home. Bringing money from banks to bKash or getting an instant Digital Nano Loan from a bank via the mobile phone is now a matter of a few taps.

Keep updated, follow The Business Standard's Google news channel

MFS has evolved into a common platform for receiving these services. As a result, the pain points people used to face earlier while availing financial services of small ticket size are now considered a thing of the distant past.

Financial services have reached the fingertips of people from all strata, making life easier. The dependence on digital transactions has thereby increased manifold.

bKash is not just a means of sending money or paying bills anymore. It has become a complete financial service platform with a variety of services, including merchant payment, savings, remittance from abroad and beyond.

It has become a part of the lifestyle. bKash is now a member of every family in weal and woe. Though many other MFS providers have launched similar services, the term "bKash me" in the MFS arena is now the word of mouth that simply denotes money transfer.

In its 12 years journey, bKash has built the strongest agent network of 330,000 agents, dearly called "Human ATMs," to take mobile financial services to the doorsteps of people at every corner of the country. These agents spread across the country have become reliable persons in their respective areas.

They have not only succeeded in serving customers, but also been able to improve the living standard of their families. Other MFS operators who came later, could also leverage this trained distribution channel established by bKash to reach the people of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Bank, the regulator of this industry, has always had the proper guidance and policy support to help MFS flourish and become customers' trusted partners for daily transactions.

Besides, bKash's service quality, continuous investment and innovation played a pivotal role in garnering the trust of more than 70 million customers.

Kamal Quadir, founder and CEO of bKash, said, "bKash has become a large family of 70 million verified customers who have been using it as a trusted and reliable partner for 12 years. Behind this achievement of financial inclusion lies the regulatory support of Bangladesh Bank and the proper guidance of the government.

"bKash is grateful to the entire country for the chance to be a true partner of the government in its endeavors towards implementing Digital Bangladesh. We believe, this achievement is not only bKash's rather of the whole nation's – every Bangladeshi has played a role to this success," he added.

Mozammel Hossain, a retired school teacher who has been using bKash since 2014, said, "Earlier, I had to go to the bank branch or the post office and stand in long queues to send money to my son, wait in separate lines to pay bills for water, electricity and gas. Even I had to go to the mobile recharge agent to top up my phone number several times a month. Sometimes I needed to take leaves from school for all these. Those days are gone.

"Now I bring money from my bank account to bKash through app. I pay all the utility bills sitting at my home, recharge my own and wife's mobile with bKash. Sometimes I send money through bKash to my grandchildren. bKash has made my life that easy at this age," he added.

More than 40% of bKash customers are women. Subarna Mostafa, an official of a private organization, said, "bKash has now made all my daily transactions so easy that I can save my time and utilize that for other things as I like to do. Without bKash, a significant amount of time used to be wasted earlier for taking these services."

Meanwhile, Golam Bariul Mujib Nobel, working at a private bank, said, "Almost all my daily transactions are done through bKash. For me, bKash is the better alternative to cash."

bKash started operating as an MFS provider under the license of Bangladesh Bank on 21st July 2011 to cater financial services through mobile phones. Its founder and chief executive officer is Kamal Quadir.

Catering to people's daily transactional needs with secured and time-saving solutions, bKash is empowering them to fulfil their dreams as well as taking the country forward for last 12 years.

During this time, bKash has brought the unbanked and underserved population into financial inclusion. Be it a remote village or a small village market or a trading center – customers have been connected to the formal financial channels mostly through bKash.

Currently, 44 commercial banks are connected to the largest bank integration network of bKash. Due to the seamless money transfer between bKash and banks, customers' experience has radically changed.

Earlier, going to a shop was the only way of recharging mobile phone numbers. In the span of an era, topping up all operators' mobile numbers through bKash has become the most preferred way for millions of people in Bangladesh.

A mountain of hassles for paying just a small amount of utility bill was commonplace before. Now bKash has made all kinds of utility bill payments for electricity, gas and water easier for the masses. Besides, fee payment for many government services has also become a matter of a few taps.

Since 2017, bKash has successfully disbursed allowances to around 10 million beneficiaries of many government initiatives, including stipends, the Prime Minister's Covid-time financial aid, farmers' incentive allowance under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, maternity allowance, Ministry of Disaster Management and also the salary, allowances and incentives of workers of the export-oriented industries.

bKash is working as a reliable means of payroll and allowances disbursement of the government.

bKash is not only accessible from Bangladesh, it can now be opened and used from abroad as well, as part of an initiative for making remittance sending easier for the expatriates.

At this moment, expatriates from around 90 countries can send remittances through more than 80 money transfer organizations via settlement in 17 local commercial banks.

In 2022, nearly Tk40 billion worth of remittance came to Bangladesh through bKash, while around Tk30 billion worth of remittance came through bKash in only six months of 2023.

Afsana Begum, who has opened a savings scheme through bKash, said, "I used to save a little portion out of my monthly expenses. Now, I am saving money in a bank through bKash. I will get a good amount of money with interest after the maturity of my scheme. Then I will be able to spend the money for my son's education. It will be a significant financial contribution to my family as well. I am eagerly waiting for that day."

Like Afsana, around 1.1 million customers have availed of the savings schemes through the bKash app. The hassles to save a small amount of money are now gone due to such a service.

Not only 'Savings', but digital nano loans can also be availed through the bKash app. bKash, in association with The City Bank jointly introduced the country's first-ever Digital Nano Loan in 2021.

With this innovation, eligible bKash users can avail of a loan ranging from Tk500 to Tk20,000 through the bKash app. Since its inception, customers have availed Tk2.75 billion of digital nano loans, while Tk2.3 billion has already been repaid.

Machbah Uddin, assistant professor of Bangladesh Agriculture University, said, "From sending money to payment of shopping, purchasing train tickets, paying school fees of my children, utility bill payment to monthly savings installment – I need not worry about these at all. bKash is indeed a friend in need. In this era of bKash, digital transaction has become the biggest emblem of trust."

Technology is changing rapidly to make our life more easy and comfortable. Organizations are adopting latest technologies to optimize their business processes in order to provide effective services and products to customers. Financial institutions are also adopting new technology to provide more affordable and convenient services. Mobile Financial services (MFS) have seen enormous growth in recent years in Bangladesh. Mobile Financial Services (MFS) is an approach to offering financial services that combines banking with mobile wireless networks which enables users to execute banking transactions. The objective of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the consumer acceptance of MFS in Bangladesh. This study presents findings from survey, including 100 respondents, which examined consumers’ attitudes towards Mobile Financial Services. The demographic, attitudinal, and behavioral characteristics of MFS users were also examined. Credibility, fastness, availability, convenience, affordability and ease of use were found to positively influence consumers’ attitudes towards mobile financial services. In contrary, impoliteness of agents, reluctance of agents to help customers in opening personal account, relatively high agent charge were found in resulting negative attitudes towards mobile financial services. This study also offers an insight into mobile financial service sector in Bangladesh. Among all the MFS providers, bKash has the highest un-aided brand awareness and top-of-mind associations. By addressing the concerns of and benefits sought by the consumers, marketers can develop and execute marketing programs to create positive attractions and policy makers can set regulations for the expansion of mobile financial services in Bangladesh

This study tries to analyze the relationships of variables under consideration into two different steps. At first, it examines the relationship between the quality of service and satisfaction of the customer. Secondly, it identifies the relationship between customer loyalty with quality of service, cost of switching and finally trusts in the mobile banking sector of Bangladesh. In this research several hypotheses are extracted from the framework are tested by using correlation and regression analysis. A sample of 250 respondents (user of mobile banking services) participates and convenience sampling method is used. The study was conducted from January 2014 to July 2014. The correlation and regression analysis in the examination endow with full support for the hypothesis which are related to reliability, responsiveness, trust, switching costs and demographic environment. The findings advocate that the executives of these banks should put more focus on escalating switching cost, developing more creative activities to grow trust among clients to increase loyalty. Findings also show that action loyalty, customer satisfaction has positive relationship. In addition, service quality was seen to affect customer satisfaction, but its impact on action, loyalty of customer was not significant to a greater extent.

An overview of bKash LTD and its place in Bangladesh's mobile financial services sector

Rayhan A H M A D Chowdhury

The popularity of mobile phones has accelerated the development of mobile banking (MB) and mobile financial services (MFS) as a means of sending money across international borders. To unbanked areas, MFS offers efficient, cost-effective financial services. This study investigates how Bangladeshi families, small, medium, and large businesses are affected by mobile financial services (MFS). How the largest MFS in Bangladesh, bKash, benefits its customers by offering helpful services Mobile Financial Services (MFS) are gaining popularity in Bangladesh due to their accessibility, speed, and other factors that are covered in this study. The bKash Limited was established in 2010 by the American Money in Motion LLC and the Bangladeshi BRAC Bank Limited. BRAC Bank is now in charge of bKash. Mobile financial services are provided by bKash in Bangladesh. Its objective is to offer small, medium, and large businesses as well as people from all socioeconomic backgrounds reliable, cost-effective financial services. Since 63% of the population of the country resides in rural areas, formal banking services are difficult to access for the target demographic of bKash. The majority of people need more literacy training, which makes banking challenging. At the time of Kash's initial launch, remote areas were to be covered. Daily activity among bKash Ltd's 18 million members is high. Following its success, bKash Ltd started to care more about other people's needs and how it could help. By enhancing its basic plan, bKash is facilitating mobile banking in both urban and rural areas. By streamlining banking services, bKash enables users to go cashless. As a result, bKash is leading the way when it comes to mobile banking services in Bangladesh. This study demonstrates the acceptance of MFSs in Bangladesh and the impact they have on people's perceptions of traditional banking. We'll give a brief overview of the services offered by bKash Ltd. and discuss how it influences people's perceptions of mobile financial seI've also included information about my role within the organization, my duties, and my departmental perspectives. , tasks, I've also provided survey findings and recommendations regarding bKash customersI hope that this report concludes the investigation. omer approval. Sensitive molecular assays have greatly improved the diagnosis of viral gastroenteritis. However, the proper preparation of stool samples for clinical testing remains an issue. bioMérieux has developed a stool preprocessing device (SPD) that includes a spoon for calibrated sampling and a vial containing buffer, glass beads, and two filters. The resulting stool filtrate is used for nucleic acid extraction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the SPD for the quantification of human adenovirus (HAdV) DNA in stool samples collected from hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. HAdV DNA was quantified with the Adenovirus R-gene kit. The suitability of the device to reproducibly quantify HAdV DNA in stools using different extraction platforms (easyMAG and QIAsymphony) was determined using archived HAdV-positive stool samples. Coefficients of variation of HAdV DNA quantifications ranged from 1.79% to 1.83%, and no difference in quantification was obser...
