We refer to the expanding universe with one simple word: space. But do we know what space is? Space is a continuous area or expanse which is free, available and unoccupied. It is a boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events have relative positions and directions. It is the zone above and around our planet where there is no air to breathe or light to scatter. It is a vacuum devoid of matter where sound can not travel. The earth looks round only when seen from space. One can only see land and water. In space, there is no gravity due to which things float in the air.

Space travel began in 1957 with the launch of the first satellite, called Sputnik, by the former Soviet Union. Many satellites and probes are launched into space. This is done to observe the Earth, collect data on climate and weather, supply modern navigation systems, explore distant celestial bodies and perform scientific research related to space. Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to fly to space on 12th April 1961.

Sunita Williams is an astronaut who has set several milestones working in space. She is best known for her work on the International Space Station and her spacewalks. She was also a Navy Captain in the United States and a highly versatile pilot. Sunita Williams set a new record for the longest space flight by a woman.

When Sunita Williams came to India for the first time, thousands of children and students got a chance to meet her. Sunita says that her friend Kalpana Chawla wanted to come to India and meet the children. She came to India to fulfil Kalpana’s dream. She shared her experience of space with the children. She said, “We cannot sit in one place in space. We keep floating in the spaceship from one end to another. In fact, water too doesn’t stay in one place. It floats around as blobs. To wash our face or hands we had to catch these blobs and wet paper with them. We ate in a very different way on the spacecraft. It was a fun experience when we float into the dining area of the spaceship and catch the floating food packet. In space, there was no need to use a comb as hair kept standing all the time. We were not able to walk, so we had to get used to floating around. We had to learn to do simple things differently. To stay in one place, we had to strap ourselves there. It was a lot of fun living in space but it was very difficult.”

Sunita also described the view of the earth when seen from the spaceship. She said, “the earth looks so beautiful and amazing. She could watch it for hours, from the window of the spaceship. She could clearly see the curved shape of the earth.”

As much as everyone would like to see missions like the NASA Curiosity land on Mars, the budget has to live up to this claim. Space exploration is not just about taking beautiful pictures of other planets; It’s also about understanding how our own planet works and what drives us – whether we’re looking at our oceans or studying asteroids coming our way or observing solar activity across our skies.

How can we learn more about ourselves if we are not ready? explore the universe that surrounds us? When the moon did not appear in the sky, it was thought that some monster has eaten it up. All these happened because there was no concept of space travel and research.

Space travel did not begin suddenly. It was a gradual process. At first, a telescope was invented. Using that newer planets and stars were discovered and identified. This helped a lot to the scientists. They noted all details of the universe and its parts. Then as science developed, the idea of space travel came to their minds. But for travelling to space, aircraft was needed. So rockets and aeroplanes were built to go space. Astronauts were appointed to travel to space and learn about it.

The first attempt was made to the moon. Animals like dogs were used to see if life can stay outside the earth. Then humans went to the moon and other planets and observed them. Today research is taking place in space travel that is enabling us to know more about the far sky over us.

Human beings always love travelling and adventures. It is human nature to set out for journeys and learn about unknown things. If we do not travel then we will not understand what lies there on the earth. When this exploration goes out in space, then we call it space travel. There are many things in the universe that we do not know. So space travel helps to learn about these. 

Earlier people thought that the sun moves around the earth, as they saw the sun rising and setting in the sky. So it was easy to think that the sun moves around the planets. They were scared of eclipses. When solar or lunar eclipses used to take place, they thought that some demon has eaten it up. The life of human beings depended on these faiths, superstitions, and beliefs. All these happened because there was no option to go to space and visualize the truth. 

But this did not continue for longer periods of time. Soon people decided to go against the laws of the priests. They wanted to know by themselves what was the truth behind everything. That marked the beginning of space travel.

Space travel helped them to learn everything anew and realize how their fears were useless. But the journey to space did not happen suddenly. It was very difficult to go to space without any idea. So at first telescope was invented to look at the night sky. Using this device, scientists understood how the sky looks and what are there in the sky. They learned about many planets, stars, the moon, and the sun. Soon they felt the need to go outside the earth and understand everything better.

Hence science was developed. Humans started studying more about space. Spaceships were invented. At first, animals were sent to space to see if they can live outside the earth. The mission was successful. Soon human beings set out on rockets and learned about the planets and stars. All false ideas were removed by space travel. Today space travel is much easier than in the past. People are now learning more about the universe because of space travel.

Our country India has shown significant development regarding space travel during the last few decades. Our Indian Space Research Organisation, also known as ISRO is now playing the role of a leader internationally. We have sent multiple space missions and many are scheduled for coming years. India has a bright future in the space travel industry.

• Make a strong beginning. The opening should provide the reader a good indication of what to expect from the rest of the article. Making a good first impression and piquing your attention starts with a good introduction.
• If required, cite facts, figures, and data. It’s best to stay away from factual material if you’re not sure about the statistics or stats. If you’re unsure about something, don’t write it down.
• The essay’s body should be descriptive, with all of the points, facts, and information listed in great detail.
• The conclusion is the most noticeable part. Your IELTS band is influenced by how you end your essay.
• Make sure there are no spelling errors. If you’re not sure how to spell something, don’t use it. It is preferable to utilize simple, everyday terms.
• Do not include any personal or casual remarks. It is strictly forbidden.

• What is space?

In space, no one can hear you scream. This is because there is no air in space – it is a vacuum. Sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum.

'Outer space' begins about 100 km above the Earth, where the shell of air around our planet disappears. With no air to scatter sunlight and produce a blue sky, space appears as a black blanket dotted with stars.

Space is usually regarded as being completely empty. But this is not true. The vast gaps between the stars and planets are filled with huge amounts of thinly spread gas and dust. Even the emptiest parts of space contain at least a few hundred atoms or molecules per cubic metre.

Space is also filled with many forms of radiation that are dangerous to astronauts. Much of this infrared and ultraviolet radiation comes from the Sun. High energy X-rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays – particles travelling close to the speed of light – arrive from distant star systems.

Imagine You're an Astronaut

Astronauts on the International Space Station, or ISS, often spend six to 12 months in space, orbiting Earth. It can be a little cramped staying inside the space station all that time. Astronauts still need to do their everyday living, such as working, eating, relaxing and exercising, but with fewer resources than they have on Earth.

Imagine you and your family are astronauts on the space station right now. You can only use the resources available to you. How would you adapt to the challenges and still keep doing important routines, like exercising, learning and making time for fun?

Astronauts are constantly learning. They do all the science experiments that need to happen on the space station. Most of the time, these experiments were designed by someone else, so astronauts need to learn about the science they are doing to follow the right steps and share the results. Astronauts also need to learn how to operate parts of the space station, such as the robotic arm .

How can you keep learning? Can you read a book? Do homework from your teacher? Have an astronaut read you a book ?

Astronauts need to keep their muscles strong when they’re in space. One way they do this is by running on a treadmill. The treadmill has bungee cords that hold the astronauts down so they don’t float away.

You can keep your muscles strong, too. Do some jumping jacks, pushups, situps, or walk and jog in place so that you’ll be strong enough when you can go exploring.

What other exercises can you do indoors? Make an exercise plan for yourself and your fellow astronauts and monitor your progress. Plus, learn more about how and why astronauts exercise in space .

Astronauts love to take pictures and videos of Earth from the window of the space station. Seeing Earth in new ways gets them thinking about what makes our planet unique and special.

You can take pictures from your window, too. Think about what makes your street, neighborhood or city unique and take note of the patterns you see. How are the trees and plants changing from day to day? How do the shapes and colors of the clouds change? ( Identify what kinds of clouds they are and make a cloud mobile .) Do you see birds, squirrels or other creatures? What do you notice about them?

Astronauts keep in touch with their families by email and videoconference.

You can keep in touch with your family and friends by email, phone and video chat or by writing letters and drawing pictures. Make a list of the friends and relatives you want to stay in touch with. Call or write to a few people every day. They will be glad to know you are thinking about them.

We all need to stay clean, no matter where we are. We wash our hands with warm water and soap. We brush our teeth. We take baths or showers.

Astronauts have special ways to keep clean while they’re in space. Everything floats on the space station – even water! – so astronauts in space can’t just hop in the shower or use a sink to wash their hands, so they need to get creative. Every few months, a spacecraft travels up to the space station to bring supplies from Earth that astronauts need. During these "resupply missions," astronauts get fresh fruit – a real treat! – new experiments to work on, clean clothes to wear, clean water to drink and food to eat until the next resupply mission comes, plus a few other treats from home.

Relaxation and fun are important, whether you’re in space or on Earth. Astronauts have some time every day to relax and do whatever they enjoy most.

Here are some things you can do at home that astronauts on the space station can’t do:

• Open a window. This is definitely not recommended for astronauts, who have the vacuum of space outside their window!
• Breathe fresh air. Although the air on the space station is filtered, it’s the same air that’s been there for more than 20 years.
• Wash your clothes. Can you believe there’s no way to do laundry in space?
• Walk. Okay, floating is cool, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to walk around.

• Stay hydrated! Astronauts need to drink water when they’re in space. So do you. Drink lots of water. If you wonder how water acts differently on the space station than it does on Earth, watch this video by astronaut Chris Hadfield .
• Grow food. Astronauts are learning how to grow food in the microgravity of space. Astronauts on the space station conducted experiments to grow tomato seeds and basil seeds in space. Students grew seeds on Earth at the same time to compare how they grew in both environments. You can plant seeds and grow your own fruits and vegetables. • If you have flour, water and salt, you can make your own play dough. You can sculpt your own planets, moons, rockets, satellites, astronauts and more. Here’s a scale model of the solar system you can make with play dough .
• If you have paper, you can learn how to do origami , the Japanese art of paper folding. Did you know that NASA has origami experts who help figure out how to fit large spacecraft into the tight spaces on rockets?
• If you have paper and a pencil, crayons, colored pencils, markers, pastels, chalk or other art supplies, you can draw planets and moons .
• If you have empty tissue boxes or other cardboard, paper towel tubes, scissors and glue, you can design your own Mars rover .
• If you have access to a computer, you can explore all of the planets in the solar system and the NASA spacecraft that study them with free NASA’s Eyes on the Solar System software .

Space Not So Full of Stars

More than that, it is important for you to know what is NOT there in space. There is no air in space! Can you imagine how strange that would be? Yes! It is just vacuum. In this empty space, neither can sound waves travel nor could the sunlight be scattered. Sometimes, space could appear as a black blanket.

Where Do Planets Lie In Space?

No! Space is not totally empty. There is a vast gap between the stars and planets. This gap is filled with a massive amount of gas and dust. There are other celestial bodies as well. Our earth is one of them.

Let’s Travel In Space

There are many astronauts who have been to space. From India , we have great astronauts who have travelled up there. Some of them include Kalpana Chawla, Ravish Malhotra, and Rakesh Sharma. Note: an astronaut is properly trained to travel to space by spacecraft.

Can You Sit and Roam in Space?

No, you cannot sit or walk around in space. You will float in the space.The astronauts also do not stay in one place and keep floating. Not only this, but they also have to catch the floating packets of water and food in the spaceship! This is because of the lack of the gravitational pull in space. On earth, when we throw something up it comes down because of gravitational force. However, in space, there is no such force. Therefore, things float.

LESSON OVERVIEW

This free ESL lesson plan on space travel has been designed for adults and young adults at an intermediate (B1/B2) to advanced (C1/C2) level and should last around 45 to 60 minutes for one student.

In 1961, the human race ventured into space for the first time when Yuri Gagarin completed an orbit of Earth. Eight years later, in 1969, the first humans landed on the Moon and since then, we have gone no further. Today, many important scientists have warned that if we do not find another planet to live on in the future, humanity faces the risk of extinction due to global warming, the threat of nuclear war or artificial intelligence. Plans are afoot to visit Mars in the coming years, but it is unlikely that the Red Planet could be a viable home, meaning we will have to look further afield, probably in another solar system, to find a new home. In this ESL lesson plan on space travel, students will have the opportunity to discuss and express their opinions on issues such as whether they would like to travel in space, why we might need to colonise other planets and how we might achieve this.

This lesson plan could also be used with your students to debate these issues for the  International Day of Human Space Flight , which takes place in April, or for World Space Week , which takes place in October. PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Reading activity Before the English class, send the following article to the students and ask them to read it while making a list of any new vocabulary or phrases they find (explain any the students don’t understand in the class):

TOR | “Science vs. The Expanse : Is It Possible to Colonize Our Solar System?”

The article refers to the popular sci-fi TV show The Expanse , which shows a future in which humans have colonised various places in the solar system including the Moon, Mars and Ceres, and asks whether or not this is a realistic future for humans. At the start of the class, hold a brief discussion about what the students thought about the article. Do they agree with what was written in the article? Did they read anything they disagree with?

Video activity To save time in class for the conversation activities, the English teacher can ask the students to watch the video below and answer the listening questions in Section 3 of the lesson plan at home. There are intermediate listening questions and advanced listening questions so teachers can decide which would be more appropriate for their students. Check the answers in the class.

The video for this class is called “Could We Actually Live On Mars?” by TED Ed and explores the possibility of colonising Mars and the challenges this would entail.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

The focus in the class is on conversation in order to help improve students’ fluency and confidence when speaking in English as well as boosting their vocabulary.

This lesson opens with a short discussion about the article the students read before the class. Next, the students can give their opinion on the quote at the beginning of the lesson plan – what they think the quote means and if they agree with it. This is followed by an initial discussion on the topic including how the students think it would be to travel in Space, the prospects of turning the Moon into a holiday resort and what TV shows or filsm the students have seen that involves space travel.

After this, students will learn some vocabulary connected with space travel such as terraform , space tourism and wormhole . This vocabulary has been chosen to boost the students’ knowledge of less common vocabulary that could be useful for preparing for English exams like IELTS or TOEFL. The vocabulary is accompanied by a cloze activity and a speaking activity to test the students’ comprehension of these words.

If the students didn’t watch the video before the class, they can watch it after the vocabulary section and answer the listening questions. Before checking the answers, ask the students to give a brief summary of the video and what they thought about the content.

Finally, there is a more in-depth conversation about the need for space travel. In this speaking activity, students will talk about issues such as whether or not humans will ever colonise other planets, why humans would want to settle on other planets and the genetic and technological challenges this would present.

After the class, students will write about the colonisation of space. This could be a short paragraph or a longer piece of writing depending on what level the student is at. The writing activity is designed to allow students to practise and improve their grammar with the feedback from their teacher. For students who intend to take an international English exam such as IELTS or TOEFL, there is an alternative essay question to practise their essay-writing skills.

Space Travel

Space travel is a great achievement of the twentieth century. Man had always dreamt of conquering space—that is probably why he learnt to fly. The invention of the aeroplane was but the beginning for greater things to come.

Space travel was only a dream until October 4, 1957 when the Soviet Union, now Russia, launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit the earth. Since then more than 3,000 spacecraft’s have circled the globe, and many have been sent to explore the planets in the solar system. On July 20, 1969 American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin became the first two men to walk on the moon. What a glorious moment it was in the history of mankind!

The next step is setting up colonies of space stations and this will be even more exciting. Imagine hundreds of thousands of earthlings living in outposts in space. And who knows—a journey beyond the planets may also become a possibility, a new challenge to be met!
