A reflective essay in Purposive

Good day Maam Natalia. I hope you will evaluate my essay by expressing in the FIRST PERSON however, a few percent would use as the THIRD PERSON and correct my grammar. Thank you for your consideration. (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。

According to Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order No. 20 series of 2013, Purposive Communication is describe as the use of language to write, speak and present to different audiences and for various purposes. This course is intended to help us to convey more of the message to our listeners/readers and receivers. It is a vital skill to learn. Through purposive communication, we can hone and improve our awareness in the cultural and intercultural aspects that will enable us to communicate efficiently and appropriately to a wide variety of audience either in a local or global context. It is very important for us to know this different type of topics and gain knowledge about the purpose of communication, seeing that this may become a vital part in our academic endeavors, our chosen disciplines, as well as our careers in the near future. What I have learned in Module 1 is that this chapter taught me how to effectively communicate with other people. Peter Shepherd (2019) once said, “Communication is the solvent of all problems and is the foundation for personal development.” A better communication leads to a good and lasting relationship. Also the importance of elements in communication process plays a vital role in order to achieve an effective communication and basic communication principles. It must be known and applied. I also learned about communication in globalization which serves us a bridge that connects people all over the world. In that way, we can achieve the so called ‘unity’, between each country. Rollo May (n.d.) quoted “Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing”. As we conduct an informal research on different intercultural modes to our relatives, acquaintances who works in abroad as well as our friends, classmates who lives at least for a year in another country. I feel so grateful in a way that it really inspires me and motivates me to understand other people, even harder, despite of our differences in cultures, languages, and beliefs. They still manage to understand each other and I realized that language barrier is not that problem, its a matter of willingness to learn each others languages, beliefs, and etc. In the word of Tony Robbins (2020), “To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.” Moreover, in Module 2, it tackles about the fundamentals of public speaking which it is a great help for me though I am not the best when it comes to public speaking and it has never been an area to me. I really do not like having a lot of attention on myself, but in public speaking, the entire audience is listening and watching my every move. So, I always get super nervous about that sort of stuff, but I’m trying to get over it. With that being said, this business communications class has truly helped me get over this fear that I had and helped me improve on my speaking skills. As Kreiner (2008) posits that public speaking skills in various situations such as meetings, conference, and ceremonies are essential to business (p.16). Therefore, it is important to overcome this public anxiety by practicing in small groups of peers and then moving on to larger audiences. And this will increase my confidence and help to reduce our anxiety level. Meanwhile in lessons of Module 3, it highlighted about the communication in workplace, professional correspondence, job application and interview process which is very essential part in the common workplace and I believe these lessons I’ve learned, I can use this to my future job. And as I have learned about this module, business profession requires frequent communication between the clients and the people doing that particular business. Communication is important in a workplace setting because people must interact with one another in ways that will get the job done as quickly and effectively as possible (eNotes. (2013), study smarter). In business profession, it also involves written communication, since communication in workplace requires sending emails, business letters, writing memos or providing briefs and reports. However, as a new generation arise, millennials have their own slang. Even on my self I used slang words every time when I am sending messages, like for example asking on my friends, ”Hey, What’s up?” and that is natural for us millennials to hear this. But if I apply this in my workplace, I know it could be detract on my message. According to Piran and Sheenan, (2009), if one does not express oneself clearly in writing, it is unlikely that he/she will get his/her message across. Once this happens, then no action will be taken and performance will be negatively affected. When communication is effective, it leaves all parties involved satisfied and feeling accomplished. By delivering messages clearly, there is no room for misunderstanding or alteration of messages, which decreases the potential for conflict. Lastly I have learned in Module 4 that the principles of academic writing are helpful to develop business plans, reports, and observations in order to present the material in an effective manner to achieve the definite goal. Thus, the papers are developed to persuade, to argue, to describe, and to contrast and compare facts. There are also a lot of other objectives to write an academic paper (Ballenger, 2010). The ability to stress on the definite objective and complete it in writing is important to developing business papers such as business plans, business proposal and more. That is why, the task of the writer is to provide the effective argument which is carefully developed and supported with reliable facts and evidences to persuade the audience in the writer’s competence in relation to the topic discussed (Hoffman & Ford, 2009). Referring to the example of the business plan, I have learned it is possible to note that the successfully structured business plan cannot be discussed as effective, if it is not based on convincing evidences and current data. All in all, purposive communication makes me realized that in our life we must communicate to other people with a purpose. Something will help you and other people grow as a better individual. It is not just important to our course rather it is important for everybody else as well since all of us need to communicate in order to understand and to be understood. Communication is a necessity to the human being hence, being knowledgeable enough about the purposes of communication is a must.

According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order No. 20 Series of 2013, purposeful communication is described as the use of language in writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for different purposes. This course is designed to help us communicate more of the message to our listeners/readers and recipients. This is an important skill that we need to learn. Through purposeful communication, we can raise and improve our awareness of cultural and cross-cultural issues so that we are able to communicate effectively and appropriately with a variety of audiences, whether in a local or global context. It is very important for us to know these different topics and gain knowledge about the purpose of communication, as this may become an important part of our academic endeavors, our chosen disciplines, as well as our careers in the near future.
