A paramedic’s job is breathtaking and awe-inspiring on a daily basis, in my opinion. Paramedics are among the most fast-paced and demanding jobs in the business, and they care for patients during critical moments.

In addition to medical expertise, the role requires a high level of stress and pressure tolerance. I’ve been in emergency situations several times in my life when someone close to me has fallen ill suddenly and unexpectedly.

I was impressed and inspired by the paramedics’ quick and professional response.

From a young age, I was fascinated with medicine and healthcare . At no point did my dream of higher education rescind because I chose to have a family.

As a self-motivated individual, I have worked hard to improve my teaching in recent years. Due to my desire to safeguard health, I completed Advanced Certificates in Food Safety and Health & Safety in 2010. Additionally, I have earned several certificates in Adult Learner Support.

My current studies at Royal College include Psychology, Health Related Studies, Study Skills, Life Sciences (Double) and updating my OCN English and Maths.

In addition to ‘Cells and Tissue’, ‘Digestion and Nutrition, Microbiology, and Human Physiology, I also enjoy the Life Sciences.

I am confident that my work experience will help me in my studies of paramedic science. Having worked as a sales administrator, I am highly organized, which will ensure that my studies are thorough and complete.

Additionally, I have worked as an HR Manager and as an Operations Manager, which has honed my leadership skills and provided me with the opportunity to work dynamically in a team environment.

Due to my business experience, I am also a proficient user of computer programmes such as Microsoft Office, as well as a confident presenter.

It is my experience that the best way to optimize performance is to maintain a positive and friendly working environment among my colleagues and workers.

Prospective paramedics must demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills in order to prove themselves worthy.

When I’m not working, I’m an avid motorsports fan. My involvement with the sport began when I was 14, competing in go-cart races. I have gone on to compete in road rallying and unique stage racing, and since 2014 I have been a serious competitor in Rally-cross.

I also relish every moment I can spend with my family. I am a single mother of four wonderful children who encourage me to become the best I can possibly be. I have successfully balanced my family life with full-time jobs and studying over the years, so I am used to working under a certain amount of pressure, but I feel I am a strong and capable woman who can rise to meet any challenge.

I am full of optimism and belief in a brighter tomorrow, and I strive to be able to use my skills so that I can help people experience the best of life.

I believe that I have a long list of strong characteristics that will make me an ideal candidate for this course. My years as a single mother have taught me to have a compassionate nature, yet I am quick to make decisions and willing to take a leading role during crisis situations.

I have strong communication skills and a calm, reassuring manner which is essential in times of pressure. I am well-organised, resilient, adaptable, and incredibly determined to achieve my goals. To be a paramedic has been an ongoing dream in my life and I will stop at nothing to make it come true.

I hope one day to combine my motor-sport passion and medical knowledge, and become a motorbike paramedic.

I have always had a deep fascination with the human body and how it works. This curiosity led me to pursue a career in the medical field, and I have recently completed my A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology.

I am now eager to take the next step in my journey to becoming a paramedic, and I am excited to apply for a place on the Paramedic Science course.

The opportunity to study at a university with a reputation for producing highly skilled paramedics is a dream come true for me. I am confident that the course will provide me with the knowledge and skills I need to excel in this challenging and rewarding profession.

Throughout my studies, I have developed a strong understanding of human anatomy and physiology, and I am particularly interested in the role of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in maintaining health and well-being.

I am also fascinated by the psychological and social aspects of healthcare, and I believe that being able to understand and empathize with patients is just as important as having technical expertise.

Outside of my studies, I have volunteered at my local hospital and have gained valuable experience working with patients and healthcare professionals.

I have also had the opportunity to observe paramedics in action, and I have been inspired by their dedication and professionalism.

I am a hardworking and determined individual, and I am committed to achieving my goal of becoming a paramedic.

I believe that my passion and dedication, combined with the excellent training I will receive, will enable me to make a positive difference in the lives of patients and their families.

Paramedic practice/science personal statement example.

I am applying for a place to study paramedic science/practise at your University because I have developed a great interest in that specific field of Health Science ever since I have volunteered at the Australian St. Johns Ambulance Service in Western Australia.

While assisting and shadowing the paramedics working there, I have gained a lot of experience in the everyday work in an emergency service. With this university degree I would like to further develop my knowledge and be able to become a Paramedic like my mentors, which have been teaching me much about this career as well as showing me what big of a difference one caring and understanding paramedic can make in any patients situation.

At the start of being a Volunteer Ambulance Officer everything could be very frightening. I do remember the first Priority One Call I answered to, like it was yesterday. Chest pain and difficulties to breath was what had appeared on our patient’s sheet in the Ambulance.

With more experience and great paramedics on my side I have learned to focus when it matters, to gain the required skills to assist in the best possible way and to conquer the fear of failure in these situations.

I am very grateful that I was able to make those frontline experiences in the ambulance, as they have made me realise that the job paramedics do is very hard and can be draining, but also very rewarding.

A very good example for me is a situation with a young woman who was clearly frightened to come with us in the ambulance, but with compassion and sensible conversation I was able to make her feel more comfortable and open up to me. I was very happy I could do this for her.

One of my paramedic mentor has told me many times, that even though the medical skills are very important, the interpersonal skills are what makes a great paramedic. This I have learned to be true many times and want to follow through with his great example in my studies.

As it has been clear for me since my mid-teens that I want to have a career in the social and health section, I volunteered with 15 years of age for an organisation called Malteser. This German organisation supports aged people living at home, as well as people with disabilities and answers to emergency calls.

Volunteering for this organisation was the great opportunity for me, to get to know different roles of Health and social workers. I personally was stationed in a home for people with disabilities, in which I learned how to care and support the people living there. I went there after school once or twice a week for about three hours at the time.

In my year there I stepped out of my comfort zone and learned very much about different disabilities and how to support each individual as well as how to take responsibility for someone else.

After this one year I made my first experiences in the emergency service. Within the same Organisation I volunteered in their Ambulance Service. It was a very valuable time for me, as I learned to appreciate Teamwork in hard and difficult situations, gained some first medical skills and found my own passion for being a paramedic.

To go to Australia after school was one way for me to understand myself better and to further develop my passion and skills for becoming a paramedic. Through my work as a volunteer for St. John Ambulance and working for the Government funded Organisation Lifestyle Solutions, which supports people with disabilities within the community, I was able to become sure which career path is the right one for me.

While I very much enjoyed caring for the clients of Lifestyle Solutions, I knew that the emergency response is what I would like to peruse as a career. The fact that no day, no hour and no call is like the other, that you never really know what scene is expecting you, excites me and keeps me going like in no other job I have worked in my life so far.

I loved the variety of people that we had in our Ambulance, loved listening to them and treating them in the best possible way. When I was coming home after the 12 to 14 hour day- or night shifts, I was clearly tired, but also so very satisfied, as I had the feeling that I had done something very important with my day. I was able to make a difference.

With this attitude and the experience I would like to study at your university. In the past three and a half years in Australia I have learned to set myself realistic goals, to work on them with determination and to succeed in the best possible way. Moving all by myself to a country across the globe and living there, made me not just independent and self-reliant, but also open to new cultures and new experiences.

This leaves me confident that I will be able to succeed in my ambition to study paramedic science /practise in the UK.

In addition to academic qualifications, applicants must pass an interview, a medical examination, a fitness test, and a criminal record check.

The entry criteria for the university course paramedic is more stringent than other similar courses, such as nursing or physiotherapy. For nursing, applicants must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, English and a Science, as well as two A Levels at grade C or above.

However, a BTEC National Diploma or Level 3 Diploma is not required for nursing.

For physiotherapy, applicants must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, English and a Science, as well as three A Levels at grade C or above. Again, a BTEC National Diploma or Level 3 Diploma is not required for physiotherapy.

Programmes tend to be modular in approach and encompass the integration of theory, practice and research throughout. To ensure that you are competent both academically and professionally, a wide range of learning experiences, teaching and assessment methods will be used. Apart from standard lectures, teaching will also include; keynote lectures, group discussion and debate, student-led seminars, structured reflection, enquiry based learning, skills teaching and learning in practice.

On any practice placements you will be required to work early, evening, nights  and weekend shifts to ensure you gain a range of experience and meet the programme requirements. These practice placements can include both urban and rural settings, and during your time there you will be supported by clinical mentors or appropriately qualified personnel (who are there to turn to if you have any questions). Placements can be in a range of settings such as; emergency ambulances, operating theatres, emergency departments or medical assessment units. This experience will give you the chance to see patients on a daily basis and adapt to working within a real life hospital or medical environment.

The course content will be delivered using a student-centred approach, allowing them to develop their practical skills in safe, simulated teaching environments, where the teaching team will include paramedics, nurses, anaesthetists. Back up is provided through the provision of module leaders, personal tutors and link teachers, all of whom offer academic and pastoral support when required.

On some occasions my team would be the first person on the scene of an accident dealing with unconscious patients, or those who are not breathing or bleeding heavily. I have received advanced training from them and have the certificates to prove it. Their training facilities were superb, and included specialised manikins, which could be programmed to simulate numerous conditions. These provided me with provide real-time clinical scenarios where I had to find pulses, blood pressure and respiratory sounds, etc.

After visiting many campuses, researching and talking to quite a few learned people, I have come to the conclusion that your university is ideal for me and my ambitions. This course is designed in collaboration with the local ambulance trust and mapped to the College of Paramedics’ educational guidance.

In your first year, you’ll study topics that are fundamental to paramedic science, including concepts of caring, essential paramedic practice, physical health, and research and evidence-based practice, ensuring you have a solid foundation upon which to build the rest of your degree.

During your second year, you’ll learn about care across the lifespan, management of physical and mental health, patient assessments and public health.

Course structure Open

This three-year course runs over 43 weeks in your first and second years, and 36 weeks in your third year. You’ll get seven weeks' holiday usually over the winter, spring and summer vacations (subject to change). The length of the course year and the holiday entitlement are requirements of the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC).

The academic year is divided into two semesters of 15 weeks each. Each semester consists of a period of teaching, revision/directed learning and assessment.

This will enable the students to start demonstrating professional values, understanding how dignity and respect influence patient interaction in accordance with their code of conduct. It will introduce them to a range of assessment skills within a simulated environment utilising health care equipment and will enable them to explore team working and problem-solving skills using effective professional communication using series of dynamic learning experiences. Paramedic Science students will experience interprofessional learning together with midwifery and all three-nursing field undergraduate students. Throughout the year with distinctive, weekly opportunities in the theory blocks for students to develop professional identity and allow further focus on field specific elements of the programme.

Year 2 - BSc (Hons)

Paramedic science 2.

This module provides a sequential and integrated learning experience using theory and practice, by a spiraling of content that supports student development. Students will be supported to apply their knowledge of altered physiology and body functioning to commonly encountered mental, physical, behavioural and cognitive health conditions. There will be a focus on management of increased complexity in patient care, with placement experiences that support and reflect the learning within university learning blocks. Students will have an opportunity to consider the wider scope of leadership innovation and change management and its impact on teams and care provision. Practice within simulation and placement will enable students to further develop clinical competencies and assessment and decision-making skills, focusing on the management of complexity within holistic scenarios.

Year 3 - BSc (Hons)

Paramedic science 3.

This final module provides a sequential and integrated learning experience using theory and practice, by a spiraling of content that supports student development. It will prepare students to demonstrate proactive leadership acting as change agents to challenge practice in order to enhance people¿s wellbeing and experience of health care; integrating evidence into their clinical and scholarly practice, becoming an accountable evidence-based professional. Practice within simulation and placement will enable students to draw together learning from university blocks, by consolidating their knowledge and proficencies within clinical practice in preparation for professional registration.

As well as being taught by lecturers from Surrey, you'll be taught by guest lecturers, including doctors, nurses, midwives and other health and social care professionals.

Throughout each year of your placements, you'll be assigned a practice educator, who is a senior clinician. They'll guide you through your placements and document your progress.

New students will receive their personalised timetable in Welcome Week. In later semesters, two weeks before the start of semester.

Scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week (Monday – Friday), with part-time classes normally scheduled on one or two days. Wednesday afternoons tend to be for sports and cultural activities.

Our Medicine (Graduate Entry) BMBS degree, nursing and midwifery, and health science courses are taught at the Kate Granger Building (30 Priestley Road), on the Surrey Research Park.

We encourage our students and graduates to become members of the  College of Paramedics  (CoP). CoP is the UK’s professional development body for paramedics, promoting and evolving members through educational guidance, learning resources and professional support. It also represents the profession within various working groups and advisory committees, to ensure all its members are heard on a national scale. Membership gives you access to online learning materials, the British Paramedic Journal and a magazine, along with discounts on books, equipment and conferences, during your studies and after.

Facilities Open

You’ll learn in our  multimillion-pound facilities , including our Clinical Simulation Centre which consists of two large wards, an operating theatre, a community flat and an ambulance bay with a working ambulance. We have invested in kit and equipment that is used by both the ambulance trusts that you will be on placement with. You’ll learn how to perform clinical procedures and thorough clinical assessments, and much more. 

Our  virtual environment, lifelike manikins and actors will transport you to the centre of emergency situations, so you can practise your trauma skills and develop your confidence and competence to manage any situation you may face during your placements and when you’re fully qualified.

You’ll also have access to our independent clinical learning room, with the necessary equipment required to practise the skills you have been taught.

Associate degrees

If you have an associate degree, you can apply for first or second year entry.

For 1st year entrants:

If you are an international student and you don’t meet the entry requirements for this degree, we offer the International Foundation Year at the Surrey International Study Centre. Upon successful completion, you can progress to this degree course.

Selection process

Shortlisting.

As part of the shortlisting process your personal statement and reference will be reviewed and should outline your insight into the subject area as well as your motivation and commitment to undertake the course.  You should have a clear understanding of the profession and be able to demonstrate the personal skills and qualities relevant to the course. Wherever possible, and if offered a place, candidates are encouraged to gain some practical work experience prior to undertaking this course, but this is not essential.

If you are offered and accept a place on the course, admission is subject to occupational health screening* and a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) enhanced check.

If you meet the entry criteria, you will be required to take part in a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) conducted through an online system of pre-recorded questions by our academic staff assisted by staff from our clinical practice areas.  You will be sent detailed guidance and support on these selection activities with your invitation to interview.

The course does not accept applications for deferred entry.

Covid-19 vaccinations

On 15 March 2022, regulations revoking the Vaccination as a Condition of Deployment (VCOD) for Healthcare Workers came into force. This means that it will not become a requirement for people to have received a Covid-19 vaccine in order to deliver face-to-face CQC-regulated activities in wider social care settings. Whilst we still encourage everyone to get vaccinated where they can, it is no longer a requirement for this programme.

Recognition of prior learning

We recognise that many students enter their higher education course with valuable knowledge and skills developed through a range of professional, vocational and community contexts.  

If this applies to you, the recognition of prior learning (RPL) process may allow you to join a course without the formal entry requirements or enter your course at a point appropriate to your previous learning and experience.

The annual tuition fees for courses starting in September 2025

Payment schedule

  • Students with Tuition Fee Loan: the Student Loans Company pay fees in line with their schedule.
  • 50% payable 10 days after the invoice date (expected to be early October of each academic year)
  • 50% in January of the same academic year.

The exact date(s) will be on invoices. Students on part-time programmes where fees are paid on a modular basis, cannot pay fees by instalment.

  • Sponsored students: must provide us with valid sponsorship information that covers the period of study.

Professional training placement fees

If you are studying on a programme which contains a Professional Training placement year there will be a reduced fee for the academic year in which you undertake your placement. This is normally confirmed 12 to 18 months in advance, or once Government policy is determined.

Additional costs

  • Commuting (local travel expenses): Students are required to pay the upfront cost of travel and accommodation expenses incurred when on placements, these may vary depending on the location. Students starting their studies in 2024/25 will be able to apply for reimbursement of travel and dual accommodation expenses through the Learning Support Fund because of attending practice placements (this model may not apply for the duration of students' studies). Essential expenses incurred over and above a student’s normal daily travel costs to the University are covered. NHS rules on expenses must be followed and the rates applicable are to be confirmed by the NHS Business Services Authority.  Students are also able to claim travel and accommodation costs via the NHSLSF if they undertake the additional elective placement.
  • Personal protective equipment and uniform: You will be provided with a uniform that you will wear in your practice placements as well as in clinical sessions during your time at Surrey. Personal protective equipment, including safety boots, will be provided by the ambulance trust that you are on placement with. All students receive a name badge free of charge before they go out into practice, if a replacement is required (lost/damaged, etc.) there is a small fee to replace it.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check: The University will meet the cost of one DBS check, completed at the start of each new student’s programme or earlier where applicants indicate they have a conviction in their application. The DBS check is a programme requirement: it is mandatory that the DBS process is completed, and the student is approved to attend before they can start placement. Applicants offered a place on the programme will be contacted to complete the online process by the deadline specified. The process is not completed until all original documentation has been approved by an appointed DBS approver. This should be completed in advance of applicants starting their programme using the main branches of the Post Office, where there will be an £8.22 administration fee. Following this, students will be required to sign up to the annual online DBS update service which allows you to maintain an updated DBS record. This has an annual cost of £13.

These additional costs are accurate as of September 2023 and apply to the 2024 year of entry. Costs for 2025 entry will be published in September 2024. 

Placements and study abroad Open

Clinical placements.

You’ll spend half of your training in clinical placements, allowing you to develop your knowledge, skills and practice within healthcare settings, under the supervision of qualified practitioners. You’ll complete 30 placement hours a week, for approximately 20 weeks in your first, second and third years of study.

Previous students have completed their placements in the NHS, with private healthcare organisations and with charities. These have been across several settings, including accident and emergency departments, ambulance stations and vehicles, hospital units (e.g. children’s, coronary care, maternity and mental health), minor injury centres, operating theatres and specialist ambulance services.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills you require to be a registered paramedic. You will be equipped to meet the challenges of modern paramedic practice, enabling you to deal with unpredictable situations competently and confidently. Course structure

You will be taught by a highly-skilled and motivated team with both clinical and teaching expertise. Evidence-based practice is embedded within the course, which ensures you are taught the most current and up to date skills and knowledge. You will learn through a variety of methods including presentations, seminars, lectures, group work and problem-based learning.

You'll also undertake a wide range of practice placements throughout the North East to enhance your learning which may lead to further employment opportunities.

A strong professional identity and confidence to work with various professional groups is an essential part of the course.

Applied Human Sciences in Paramedic Science (20 credits)

Gain knowledge in relation to normal human growth and development throughout the lifespan, including cognitive, emotional and social maturation. Learn about the biopsychosocial determinants of health and wellbeing and the impact of illness on a person, family and society. Develop an appreciation of the factors which influence individual variations in health and an understanding of the impact that changes in health and wellbeing can have on functional ability.

Legal, Ethical and Professional Issues in Paramedic Science (20 credits)

Explore professional standards for paramedic science with a focus on the legal, ethical and patient safety frameworks required for effective patient care. Understand the components of clinical governance, including the challenges of autonomous practice in relation to legal and ethical frameworks governing accountability, maintenance of professional standards and duty of care for service users and those involved in their care.

Emergency Care Skills in Paramedic Science (20 credits)

Develop the clinical skills and abilities required for clinical practice in an emergency situation, together with the use of supporting technologies and strategies relevant to paramedic science. Gain clinical reasoning and decision-making skills to perform a safe and rapid assessment of need and prioritise a clinical workload in a challenging and unpredictable emergency situation. Learn to evaluate the evidence base to identify and use best practice to guide clinical care. Develop a clear understanding of the role of the paramedic including the requirement to work collaboratively with the wider health care team.

Communication, Empathy and Understanding in Health (20 credits)

Develop the verbal and non-verbal communication skills required within paramedic practice to ensure the quality of interactions with service users, carers and colleagues. Learn how to change communication styles to reflect the needs of the client, age, capacity, illness, learning ability and language. Explore the concepts of compassion and communication within the context of multi-disciplinary healthcare and individual interaction with individuals, families and their carers.

Foundations of Social and Behavioural Science (20 credits)

Explore aspects of health and wellbeing that can affect patients and learn how the modification of lifestyle factors such as smoking cessation, alcohol reduction, maintenance of adequate nutrition and exercise may enhance health outcomes. Explore concepts of sociology, psychology and social policy within the contexts of paramedic science and how these impact on individuals, families and their carers.

Introduction to Research Methods for Paramedics (20 credits)

Develop the knowledge and skills to understand research in health and paramedic sciences. Gain awareness of the fundamental issues around the research continuum and consider aspects of research design, analysis and dissemination. Explore research related issues such as sampling, validity, reliability and ethics and learn how to find, read, review and reference health research.

Applied Pathophysiology in Paramedic Science (20 credits)

Explore the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the major body systems, together with the role of immunology, biochemistry and microbiology in the support of homeostasis and the development of illness. Gain knowledge in normal human growth and development from conception throughout the lifespan including cognitive, emotional and social maturation. Discuss the biopsychosocial determinants of health and wellbeing and the impact of illness. Better understand the factors which influence health and how lifestyle changes may enhance individual health and well-being.

Develop skills in policy development and the inclusion of research evidence and public and patient involvement in the development of clinical services and the advancing role of the paramedic. Explore legal, ethical and moral dilemmas from clinical practice and discuss, develop and articulate strategies for resolution and development of physical and psychological resilience. Get an introduction to clinical audit and the evaluation of clinical practice.

Advancing Emergency Care Skills in Paramedic Science (20 credits)

Enhance your clinical examination and history taking skills to independently formulate a provisional working diagnosis to guide immediate care management, including the ability to make, receive and review referrals within a range of settings and situations. Demonstrate your ability to work with patients as partners in emergency care decision making and demonstrate the interpersonal attributes required to facilitate patient choice where practicable. Gain experience in the interpretation of diagnostic tests to guide emergency care interventions and be able to articulate the requirement for diagnostics and the potential results clearly, and in collaboration with patients. Use a range of problem solving skills, differentiating between physiological and psychological issues to gain a full understanding of the impact of paramedic intervention.

Specialist Emergency Care Skills in Paramedic Science (40 credits)

Integrate clinical and theoretical knowledge in specialist emergency care settings. Develop clinical reasoning, decision making, and priority setting in the specialist clinical environment, together with a strong focus on patient assessment and development of emergency care plans. Consolidate specialist emergency care skills, how these differ in relation to varying complex situations and review latest principles relating to paramedic science. Undertake supernumerary practice as part of this module.

Evidence Based Practice and Research Methods (20 credits)

Gain insight into evidence-based practice and understand the nature of evidence available to inform practice. Learn how to critically appraise evidence and how to use your professional judgement to best integrate evidence into health care practice. Debate the ethical issues that underpin best practice including consent and risk management.

Clinical placement (approx 563 hours)

Minor injuries and illness in advance paramedic practice (40 credits).

In this module you’ll make evidence-based decisions on the most appropriate and effective treatment pathways for patients presenting within the context of minor injuries. Through a series of practical teaching and learning sessions in the context of primary care you will be enabled to engage in fundamental processes of clinical decision making, critically reflexive practice. You’ll also consider account advancing health care practice, decision-making and professional issues.

Contexts of Emergency Care (20 credits)

Enhance your understanding of contexts of emergency care provision and factors that influence and drive it. Broaden your horizons of health by taking a global perspective of paramedic science. Explore many of the ‘big questions’ in health, in relation to poverty, politics, human rights and development. Debate some of the complex issues facing paramedics and health care today. Enhance your understanding of the biological, social, economic and political drivers underlying major global health issues, especially in the areas of infectious disease nutrition, maternal/geriatric/child health and environmental health. Identify and discuss population groups who are at increased risk of poor health and early mortality as well as exploring those polices, programmes and interventions that might best be used to ameliorate their adverse health circumstances.

Leadership and Management in Healthcare Practice (20 credits)

Recognise the distinction between leadership and management within the context of healthcare provision and the impact and significance both have to a functioning and dynamic workforce. Discuss the impact of political, economic, socio-cultural influences on contemporary management and leadership. Consider the impact of concepts and skills such as power, autonomy, empowerment, and clinical decision making, mentoring and coaching in practice.

Paramedic Applied Practice Project (40 credits)

Undertake an individual research project involving a structured systematic literature review, which will include a detailed critical analysis of the evidence in relation to a well-defined research question. Make recommendations for paramedic science and paramedic practice from your research.

The Living Lab boasts a unique immersive simulation room, that allows participants to experience a range of simulated scenarios in a safe environment. The space is designed to make scenarios feel as close to reality as possible, to enable students to practise their clinical skills safely. An adjacent debrief room allows groups to observe the scenario in the immersive suite through a live stream (projected onto TV screens) and provide peer feedback and group discussion following the completion of the scenario.

You will be supported throughout your development with the latest in simulation technology, from the use of high-fidelity manikins, remote video technology and a state of the art simulated ambulance.

This bespoke ambulance has been designed to not only enable you to experience the day-to-day work of an ambulance paramedic, but is also equipped to include the latest learning and assessment technology.

This allows your course to be very innovative in its design and delivery, allowing you to undertake clinical simulation in a variety of remote settings throughout the region.

There are a range of simulation manikins used across most of our healthcare courses, giving you the opportunity to apply your training in a realistic, yet safe, setting.

Our manikins range from various SimMan patient simulators (SimMan 3G, SimMan ALS, Sim Junior and Sim Baby to name a few) to CAE Apollo and Caesar manikins, to anatomically realistic SimBodies and lower-fidelity simulation manikins.

SimMan and Apollo manikins can demonstrate realistic physiological behaviour, including blood pressure, a pulse, drug recognition technology (in SimMan 3G), and each model can be pre-programmed with various medical scenarios.

The John Dawson Sciences Complex is based on our City Campus. It has benefitted from a multi-million-pound investment in modern facilities in recent years and continues to develop as our health sciences offer grows.

It is the central hub for many of our health sciences courses and is made up of a variety of teaching and learning spaces, including labs, problem-based learning classrooms, and facilities that encourage interprofessional learning. Career ready

On successful completion of this course you will be eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC as a paramedic. Career options are also available outside the NHS in out of hospital environments such as off-shore, remote medicine, armed forces or primary care.

Salaries for Paramedics are in line with the NHS Agenda for Change pay scales . According to Prospects , the starting salary for paramedics is a band 5, which ranges from £25,655 to £31,534. After two years, you'll have the opportunity to increase to Band 6 (£32,306 and £39,027) following a newly qualified paramedic pathway. Experienced paramedics such as team leaders or senior paramedics who have had additional skills training can earn a salary of bands 6 to 7 (between £32,306 and £45,839). Continued training and gained experience can increase your salary opportunities.

To assist in preparing you for employment as a paramedic, this course:

Clinical placements

You will undertake a range of practice placements to gain real-life experience and apply your learning to real-life situations which may lead to further employment opportunities.

Your placement may be in an ambulance department, care/residential home, patient transport service, accident and emergency or primary care setting.

Placements are subject to availability and can be anywhere in the North East, from Berwick to North Yorkshire. You will be expected to travel daily or stay in local accommodation for the duration of your placement. You will be responsible for any associated costs including travel and accommodation for the duration of your placements.

As you may be expected to travel long distances, start your shift in the early hours, or finish your shift late at night, you could be entitled to Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE) which allows you to make a retrospective claim for excess travel costs and/or expenses for temporary accommodation near to the location of your placement. About your course

The BSc Paramedic Science at Liverpool John Moores University gives you the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence required to become a registered paramedic. You will achieve the high standard expected of today’s health professionals, enabling you to work effectively at the frontline.

Working alongside other health professionals and emergency services, you will develop strong leadership skills and the ability to work independently, as well as being a member of a team. A good level of physical fitness is paramount as moving and handling of patients and equipment is part of the role.

Your placements will be in the most part with North West Ambulance NHS Trust (NWAS). They are the largest ambulance service outside London, providing emergency care for 7 million people across the region and responding to 952,000 calls each year.

As you progress under supervision, you will be challenged to adapt quickly as situations change. The course will help you develop the clinical skills, underpinning knowledge and interpersonal skills you need to care for people in distressing circumstances. Ultimately, you will have the confidence to work effectively and independently.

We utilise many practice areas within the Merseyside and Cheshire area, which include NWAS, accident and emergency departments, health centres, hospital operating theatres, maternity units, paediatric facilities, mental health facilities and critical care facilities. Each of these placements will add to your experience and development as a paramedic student.

We have excellent facilities within the university so that we can offer you simulated experiences to support your practice. You will benefit from multi-professional days when you will be working alongside and learning with midwifery and nursing students.

Employability

Once completing the programme, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. This registration will allow you to practice anywhere in the UK as a paramedic.

Once you are a qualified paramedic and you start to build your experience, you can begin to consider progression within your chosen healthcare setting, weather that is with an ambulance service, primary care setting or any other form of NHS Trust or private organisation. You can also develop wider skills and educational pathways, which would support your future development.

You will complete modules to a total of 120 credits at each level of your degree. All modules are 'Core'; this means all students on the degree will study them.

Levels 4 and 5 are both split 50:50 between theory and practice. At Level 6 there's more of an emphasis on practice with a 40:60 split, helping to prepare you for employment as a paramedic. Increased practice-based placements will allow for a greater depth of service user medical assessment in primary care settings.

Reflective Practice

Reflecting on your own and and fellow student paramedics' simulated clinical practice is a great way to help you develop skills, build confidence and prepare for real-world placements. To do this in the best way possible, we have invested in state-of-the-art recording equipment in each of our clinical practice suites and other teaching spaces. During specific modules, you will be asked to take part in the filming of both yourself and other students. The footage recorded is strictly confidential and must not be shared inappropriately or released into the public domain. Being professional and having respect for others must always be maintained. This strict confidentiality ensures you can be at ease and fully engage with your teaching and learning experiences. Each patient bay is equipped with two cameras and a microphone so you can record yourself completing a procedure - say practicing cannulation skills or wound dressing - and then watch it back to see how you did, spotting good practice or any areas for improvement. It's truly a transformative way to learn and hone your skills!

Structure and Function of the Human Body 20 credits

The aim of the module is to understand the structure and function of the human body and how it plays an important role in decision making for paramedics.

Foundations of Communication and Professionalism 10 credits

The aim of this module is to encourage you to consider your personal and professional development. This module will offer a variety of study skills relating directly and specifically to paramedic practice.

Perspectives of Health 10 credits

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the impact of health and illness on individual and population health. You will develop an awareness of how social, ethnic, gender and cultural differences influence health and illness.

Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Illness 20 credits

This module explores human anatomy and physiology by considering growth and development within the context of the human life cycle. It will enhance your understanding of human biological systems.

Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment 20 credits

This module provides you with a theoretical base to understand the aetiology of a variety of common conditions and illnesses across all age ranges.

Paramedic Practice 40 credits

This practice-based module builds upon knowledge gained from Module 4007PM and explores key aspects of the non-emergency and emergency role. It addresses aspects of urgent and emergency care, through a model of increasing levels of dependency, immediacy and urgency. Further focus will be on the assessment and management of chronic, acute and life-threatening conditions, presented in time-critical and non time-critical situations. As a practice module, this module addresses key theories and ideas around disease, illness and mechanism of injury.

Research Methodologies for Paramedics 10 credits

The aim of this module is to provide you with the ability to undertake research in relation to paramedic practice. You will analyse the value of evidence based research in the development of health care practice.

Pathophysiology 20 credits

This module will explore human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology in relation to paramedic practice.

Promoting Professional Values 10 credits

This module will allow you to analyse the responsibilities that come with being registrants with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). It promotes the professional values of being a Health Care Professional.

Applied Pharmacology for Paramedics 20 credits

This module will explore the impact of pharmacological interventions on the human body within the realm of paramedic practice.

Clinical Examination, Assessment and Decision Making 20 credits

Within this module, you will gain theoretical knowledge required to develop and support the clinical skills that you will be learning and utilising during the practice module and whilst on clinical placement.

Advanced Practice 40 credits

By the end of this module, you will be able to safely and effectively demonstrate a range of clinical skills in the out of hospital arena with respect to the environment and any urgent or emergency situation encountered. You will be able to safely and effectively identify and differentiate the critically injured patient, including those with an exacerbation of existing illness or disease. You will also be able to ensure the appropriate management of patients with a time-critical injury or illness in accordance with current evidence-based practice.

Enhanced Clinical Skills 20 credits

The aim of this module is to develop and enhance patient assessment skills in order to form a differential diagnosis.

Expanding Research in Paramedic Practice 20 credits

The aim of this module is to expand and further develop the research knowledge and ability to design and produce a research study proposal. The proposal should direct you towards an area of study to inform your dissertation.

Critical Review 40 credits

You will undertake a structured literature review in an area related to paramedic practice. Your extended literature review will be informed by a research proposal.

Leadership as a Practice Educator 20 credits

This module will enable you to explore how to facilitate lifelong learning in others by developing your mentoring, teaching and assessing skills in the urgent and emergency care setting.

Paramedic Approach within an Integrated Urgent Care Service 20 credits

This module will enable you to improve your knowledge and understanding of the role of a paramedic within integrated urgent care and clinical assessment services.

Teaching and work-related learning

We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.

We deliver our modules in a variety of methods. We appreciate that students learn in differing ways and we have the experience and understanding to support each individual through the programme.

Work-related Learning

The wide range of placements coupled with the evidence-based learning will offer you a unique insight into the profession of the paramedic. By designing your programme in this innovative way, we are confident that you will successfully develop your skills, knowledge and professionalism as you move closer to the point of registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support.

In addition, you will be allocated a Personal Tutor at LJMU, who will give you feedback on how you are progressing with your studies and help you to plan for your educational and career development. The university also offer wider support for all of our students if needed.

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.

Your marks and feedback will be available within 15 working days of submitting a piece of work. That's because we believe that constructive feedback is vital in helping you identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to develop further.

We accept Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) and Extended Project Stand Alone qualifications. We will also accept the new Cache Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care grade B or above, or in combination with other relevant qualifications.

Please be advised that we do not accept BTEC or any other Level 3 qualification in Children's Play, Learning and Development.

We want applicants to demonstrate their understanding and commitment to the profession, who will provide excellent care and treatment. We also require evidence of relevant experience in the field of health care. This may have been paid employment, voluntary or personal experience, but we will expect you to be able to communicate specific details of these caring opportunities and relate these to the role of a Paramedic and the NHS Core values.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong desire to continually develop and improve their skills as a student and ultimately as a registered paramedic. Evidence of professional reading such as the HCPC is required and demonstrate how it fits in with the wider health service. In addition, essential aspects are excellent communication skills, good time management skills, a willingness to work flexible shift patterns.

  • Applications will be assessed, and qualifications will be checked to see that they meet or are predicted to meet our entry requirements. We would expect applicants’ personal statements to demonstrate preparation for and commitment to studying this course and to becoming a Paramedic.
  • Applicants that meet this initial criteria will then be sent an assessment by email with full instructions and a deadline for submission.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview and offers will be made to successful applicants.
  • All applicants must provide a satisfactory reference with their application, failure to do so will result in a rejected application.

Applicants who meet the programme's academic requirements will be required to undertake an assessment. Successful candidates will then be invited to interview.

All applicants will require a full UK driving licence upon commencement of the programme. We also recommend that students should look to gain the C1 provisional entitlement on their driving licence as you will need to have completed both the theory and practical test in order to secure employment in many (not all) Ambulance Service NHS Trusts. It is understood that if you are seventeen years of age at the point of application then you cannot be expected to hold a full driving licence.

As part of LJMU’s commitment to widening access we offer eligible students entry to their chosen course at a reduced threshold between 8 and 16 UCAS points. This applies if you are a student who has experience of living in local authority care or if you have participated in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes such as a summer university. Please be aware that demand for LJMU's Paramedic Science degree is extremely high. Our recruitment quota is capped at 50 places. As we usually receive around 1,700 applications, we strongly advise you to ensure your application is carefully tailored to clearly address all of the entry and shortlisting criteria. All applicants are shortlisted based on qualifications (achieved and/or predicted) in the first instance.

We are looking for evidence of understanding the wider context of the role. We want applicants to demonstrate their understanding and commitment to the profession. 

We also require evidence of relevant experience in the field of health care. This may have been paid employment, voluntary or personal experience, but we will expect you to be able to communicate specific details of these caring opportunities and relate these to the role of a Paramedic and the NHS Core values.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong desire to continually develop and improve their skills as a student and ultimately as a registered paramedic. Evidence of professional reading such as the HCPC is required and excellent communication skills, good time management skills, a willingness to work flexible shift patterns are essential.

LJMU is able to offer direct entry to the second year of the programme under existing RP(E)L arrangement given the proven relevant experience and qualifications.

You will be expected to complete a series of assessments involving moving and handling techniques.
