OMG 2 Movie Review: Solid performances anchor this educative but engaging sequel
Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).
OMG is a fascinating franchise that actually has the potential to be the gift that keeps on giving. With the number of gods in our world and the never-ending social ills in our society, it is a match made in some god's heavenly abode. If Lord Krishna comes to save Kanji Lalji Mehta, who sues God in the first instalment of the franchise, Lord Mahakaal descends to guide Kanti Sharan Mudgal's legal fight against a school that fails to teach sex education to his son. Director Amit Rai doesn't pull back any punches while delivering an engaging, insightful, compelling, and poignant sermon on the importance of sex education in India.
Cast: Pankaj Tripathi, Akshay Kumar, Yami Gautam Dhar, Pavan Malhotra
Director: Amit Rai
It is interesting that OMG 2 begins with visuals of naked Sadhus praying to Lord Mahakaal, and it paints a pertinent picture of how the physical form of men isn't something that we are averse to seeing without any filters. The film revolves around Kanti Sharan's son, Vivek, who finds himself doubting his masculinity after his classmates insult his lack of sexual awareness. This instills fear about his own manhood, and takes him down a spiral that sees him approach quacks and snake-oil peddlers, and finally ends up in a viral video featuring him masturbating in his school toilet. This is a terrific start to the film, and it is wonderful how this is narrated to a terrified, god-fearing Kanti Sharan, whose first reaction to the fiasco is turning into fear AND flight mode. It is the divine intervention ft. Akshay Kumar, that ushers him into Fight mode, and OMG 2 is on cruise speed from here till the finish line.
Impressively enough, OMG 2 doesn't bring the whole "India is the most populous country in the world yet we are ashamed to talk about sex" debate into the narrative because it is done and dusted. While one might argue the whole "Our sculptures and books espoused healthy sex knowledge so why are we close-minded" isn't new either, this is better because the onus of guilt is placed on the system and not the people. Writer-director Amit Rai is clear that normalising sex education and talking about safe sex, consent, and many more 'taboo' topics, isn't enough if it happens on a case-by-case basis. It has to happen holistically through a system that pervades every part of our Indian society, and what is a better system than the Indian education system? Through this story, and placing it within the legal framework, the questions about the archaic nature of sex education in our schools are brought to the fore.
Of course, in every legal drama, it is important that the protagonist faces a worthy adversary, and a brilliant Pankaj Tripathi is complemented by a terrific Yami Gautam Dhar, who plays advocate Kamini Maheshwari. The naivete and innocence of Pankaj's Kanti work are even better because we understand Kamini's machinations are only to win her case. Never do we paint her as the 'villain' and her performance is so on point that we might hate the lawyer but never the person. There is a lot of dignity in the fight, and whenever the narrative puts Kamini on the losing side, it is never at her expense. Such measured writing is the strength of OMG 2 , which always has its eyes on the bigger picture. Even while going for the easy punches, there exists a level of minuscule subversions that exhibit a sense of honesty. But should there be so much browbeating about our "culture" being so pure when the idea of a common culture in a diverse country like ours itself is debatable.
Despite having powerhouse performers like Pankaj, Yami, Pavan Malhotra, and Akshay himself, who looks more assured in OMG 2 than in his recent ventures, the film never loses focus on how it is about the Viveks of the world. In a nice touch, OMG 2 is as much about a father's quest to prove to the world his son didn't do a "vulgar and obscene thing" as it is about the son understanding why it is important to fight the good fight. In a wonderful writing flourish, the character never wilfully apologises for his act because he doesn't see it as a wrong thing. Full points to the makers for giving so much agency and importance to the central conceit despite having made various detours into the realm of preachiness... mostly done right.
Of course, OMG 2 employs simplistic approaches as resolutions including social media sensationalisation, last-minute revelations, and even a conversation in the afterlife. But it works because of the earnestness in the writing and the performances. From espousing the importance of speaking the naked truth as it is to children, and the way Kanti delivers those dialogues in chaste Hindi to drill home the necessity of normalising language and body autonomy.
Despite ticking most of these boxes, it is slightly disappointing that the film largely talks about sexual education centred on men and their issues. While that definitely helps in the evolution of society, OMG 2 could have shone more light on the sex education surrounding women and women's issues too. Apart from a passing line about menstruation, and how masturbation is common among women too, there is nothing much in OMG 2 that talks about women without focussing on how they should be looked by the men. Well... that could, and hopefully should be a debate for another day... probably an OMG 3 with a woman God coming to save the day...

There is no doubt that the OMG and the Jolly LLB franchises share a common thread, and Pavan Malhotra's Judge Purushottam Nagar is a lovely addition to the characters inhabiting these two universes.

OMG 2 Reviews
Flanking sexuality with faith is a space most storytellers would rather avoid, but it is precisely what makes OMG 2’s messaging universal.
Full Review | Jan 24, 2024
A film which should be watched by the audience of all the age groups as it delivers a social message which is the need of the hour across the nation.
Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 31, 2023
Watch the film for its powerful message and for the brilliant acting on display by the ensemble cast.
Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 17, 2023
OMG 2 stumbles a bit in the last third of the movie with a very clumsily staged plot development. However, this memorable drama has a timely message about sex education in schools that shows both sides of the issue in a compelling courtroom setting.

As nice as it is to see – and hear – Pankaj Tripathi on screen in any capacity, his Kanti starts sounding like a Godman who is slowly building his cult.
It’s been a while since I enjoyed an Akshay Kumar performance as much as this one. And I haven’t been taken by surprise as much as I was in OMG 2, in the best way possible.
Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 15, 2023
With a balanced dose of a social message and humour, Amit Rai weaves a compelling film starring Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar.
OMG 2 aspires to be as sharp as a scalpel but is actually as blunt as the back of a knife.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 15, 2023
It’s rare for sequels to outshine the original and writer-director Amit Rai’s clever and crisp courtroom comedy fulfils this mammoth task.
Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 14, 2023
OMG 2 always has its heart in the right place. Its concept is carefully steered, taking care to offer a progressive interpretation of Hinduism without causing offence.
Full Review | Aug 14, 2023
OMG 2 is a film that is concerned about the present and future of India’s majority community. Without directly addressing it, the film is aware that the country is regressing in the name of religion while allowing sexism, violence, and bigotry to run amok
Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 11, 2023
The intent of OMG 2 is not too hard to understand. At a time when the Hindu religion has come to be identified with regressive mandates, Rai seeks to step in and remind how progressive it has been since time immemorial.
Full Review | Original Score: 0 | Aug 11, 2023
OMG 2 is a lot of fun. It manages to strike a nice and delicate balance between dealing with a serious issue and delivering moments of genuine laughter and heartfelt emotions.

Critics Review
Giving this pankaj tripathi film an adult certificate might be the most dumbest thing done by cbfc, dumber than what they did to oppenheimer.
All said and done, this film is brilliant in the must-talk-about concept which tries to achieve things conveniently. I had all the plans to rate this a 3/5 but Akshay Kumar & teams courage to serve a sensitive topic in an entertaining way deserves a .5 more for the vision. (more)

Funny & thought-provoking, OMG2 outshines the original
OMG2 shows you how a film can be entertaining, socially relevant and informative. You dont need to leave your brain behind to have a good laugh. Take your family along to watch this interesting blend of social commentary and humour. (more)

Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi's laugh-out-loud film sneaks in a timely message
The film never wavers in its intent, sneaking in taboo topics in its laugh-out-loud comic tone, and for that it ropes in the gods, which is a brilliant ploy: you get them on your side, you can get away with anything, even things that would ordinarily be deemed ashleel (vulgar). For once, I didnt mind being lectured at; in fact I enjoyed the ones that the very earnest and very determined Kanti Sharan Mudgal delivers himself of with the very straight face that Pankaj Tripathi , once he hits his stride: such terms as hasth maithun, ling, yoni, naisargik kriya, all come tripping off his very deft tongue it helps too that Tripathi is a master of delivery all to excellent purpose. Pankaj Tripathi, Akshay Kumar share a necessary message, make you laugh
OMG 2 is the kind of film that is meant for family viewing, as it bridges the gap that has long existed between parents and kids who aren't comfortable talking about certain topics. The film opens a channel for conversations and the need to normalise sex education. Watch it with your kids and you'll go home with a smile, and maybe with a more open mind, too. (more)

OMG 2 is a bold, powerful, progressive, and sensitively handled film.
Amit Rai's story is splendid and the need of the hour. Amit Rai's screenplay is gripping. He has peppered the film with plenty of entertaining and thought-provoking moments. Also, the way he has merged the importance of sex education and the divine element is seen to be believed. Amit Rai's dialogues are sharp and clap worthy. (more)

OMG 2 Trailer Review: It’s One Man vs. The System Yet Again & Pankaj Tripathi Knows How To Rule Anything He Is A Part Of
Pankaj tripathi & akshay kumar starrer omg 2 is set for an august 11, 2024 release.
The idea of having an atheist fight against belief and self-proclaimed prophets of God while touching upon the subjects of superstition, consumerism, and a many other things, ultimately becoming a believer himself, but an aware one turned out to be a plot that took the audience by storm. It was indeed a tricky subject that, in the hands of a lesser seasoned team, could have gone abysmally wrong. With its success, entered the confidence for a sequel, and now we witness the trailer of OMG 2.
Retaining Akshay Kumar the God (Lord Shiva this time), OMG 2 replaces Paresh Rawal’s atheist Kanji with Pankaj Tripathi’s highly spiritual and religious Kanti, OMG 2 taps into a different orbit where it isn’t a non-believer questioning the existence of a supreme power, but him seeking his help to fight a case against the education system.
The trailer gives us the idea that Pankaj’s son faces some kind of bullying because of his doings which leads to Tripathi moving to the court against the school. He seeks help from God, and Akshay Kumar appears as lord Shiva. The crux of the OMG franchise seems to be intact in OMG 2. The canvas this time around is a lot bigger and broader than the first, signifying that the production house is more confident about this one.
What works the best here is Pankaj Tripathi and his art of curating entertainment, in significantly less. This seems to be yet another balanced performance that is away from theatrics and relying on the world and playing with it more than just focusing on oneself. Akshay Kumar works well in special appearances, and An Action Hero was a shining example. Though he is an active part of OMG 2, he seems to be the god who makes appearances like in the first. This will indeed be an interesting character. Yami Gautam only gets two scenes in the trailer, and the hint is that she might serve as the antagonist here.
The music album seems to be one that will sync well with the pop culture demand in India. Overall, OMG 2 seems promising from the trailer, and we hope it retains in the film too, when it releases.
Pankaj Tripathi & Akshay Kumar starrer is set for an August 11, 2023 release. Stay tuned to Koimoi for more.
